Not only is Grocery Outlet bringing extreme savings to Amador County, it’s also creating local job opportunities. The Andriessen’s plan to hire 30 full-time and parttime employees to fill positions ranging from merchandisers and cashiers, to department managers and leads. The brand-new store will open in the space formerly occupied by Safeway at the intersection of SR-49 and SR-88.

Your TLSN Local Scoop News Calaveras Health Fair By Amanda Chaddock Staff Writer March 24th marked the passing of the third annual Health Fair in Calaveras County. The Health Fair, organized by Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital, was held at Ironstone Vineyards in Murphys. Roughly 400-500 people, all ages included, attended on Saturday to benefit from this unique event. A wide variety of information and resources was available from booths on subjects including physical therapy, rehabilitation, senior living, dermatology, suicide prevention, exercise programs, nutrition, sleep apnea, the food bank, and more. In addition, attendees had the opportunity to receive Pneumonia Vaccinations, Bone Density Screenings, and Blood Analysis at low costs. Atendee Ranae Snowden came for the blood work and other things. The price for a Blood Analysis is normally in the range of $400. Those at the Health Fair were able to receive this service for only $45. “I definitely would not be able to have the blood work done otherwise,” Snowden remarked. Duane and Bambi Papais also attended in order to benefit from the various services. In regards to event overall, Bambi commented, “I think it was helpful, I found out more about bone density and saw products I wouldn’t normally see.” Nicki Stevens, the manager of the Marketing and Business Development at Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital says that the fair was put together based on a community need. “There isn’t a cover charge, so people can just come and hopefully walk away with a life changing tool,” Stevens said. This year, other Health Fairs will occur both in the summer and in the fall. The summer event is expected to take place during

July at The Terrace in Valley Springs, and the fall event during October at the Hospital in San Andreas. In addition to the vast amount of information and services provided, the third annual 5K Run/Walk for Lupus Awareness also took place. The Run/Walk is held in memory of Linda Jean Mundy. Paul Mundy says he started the event because “I wanted to find a way to bring lupus to the attention of the community.” The race, which has received much response according to Mundy, raises proceeds that benefit the Lupus Foundation of America, Inc. On the 24th approximately 45 racers partook in the race. Those participants, many of whom know someone with lupus or even have it themselves, brought awareness to a disorder that otherwise does not often receive attention. Also represented at the Health Fair was the program Scrubs for Smiles. Crystyl Hollister happened to be present for the birth of a child with a cleft palate. Upon seeing the child, she felt the need to take action. Along with the help of other Emergency Room nurses, the plan for Scrubs for Smiles was constructed. The intention was for co-workers to clean out their closet and donate their scrubs. They would then be sold and profits sent to SmileTrain, an organization whose mission is to provide surgeries for children with a cleft lip or palate, as well as train doctors to be able to perform such surgeries. As Hollister pointed out, nurses are able to be rid of unneeded scrubs while those in the community are able to purchase them at a cheaper price. As a result, money is raised for SmileTrain. “It is good for the nurses, the environment, people in our community, and the kids” shared Hollister.

through which more children will receive the surgery they need. Overall, the Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital Health Fair provided many avenues for those in the community to experience health care. With low cost services, a wealth of information, and opportunities for awareness and fundraising, the Health Fair proved to be an event of great value for the county. Bambi Papais at a booth focusing on nutrition.

The fundraiser held its sixth sale at the fair. The scrubs are typically sold at two for $6 or $7. From these sales, anywhere from $1,200$1,300 is usually raised and sent directly to SmileTrain. Denise Meyer also works with the nursing staff and desired to be involved. At the Health Fair she set up a booth to sell Premier Designs Jewelry, for which she is an independent consultant, and donated all profits from the day to Scrubs for Smiles. Such an act assured a successful fundraiser,

Your TLSN.us Local Scoop News John Owning to represent USA in Dhabi

Galt’s John Owning (center) takes first in World Trials.

By Paige Lampson Staff Writer

Galt High graduate and Arizona State student John Owning will be heading to Abu Dhabi to compete at the international level in the World Professional Jiu Jitsu Championships in April. After a knee injury prevented Owning from playing football or basketball in high school, he started looking for another sport to help him stay in shape. He started training in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and fell in love with the sport. Brazilian jiu-jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art, combat sport, and a self defense system that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting. The art was derived from the Japanese martial art of Kodokan judo (which itself is derived from Japanese Jujutsu) in the early 20th century. It teaches that a

smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique – most notably by applying joint-locks and chokeholds to defeat the other person. Owning attends the Walter Cronkite School of Broadcasting at Arizona State. While in Arizona Owning trains and competes with Team Nova Uniao Arizona. Owning competed in the World Trials held in San Diego March 3-4. These are also, known as the Abu Dhabi World Trials. The trials are funded by The Sheik of Abu Dhabi. They put on 26 qualifying tournaments in 21 countries to get the best athletes in the world. The first place in each belt in these qualifying tournaments wins an all expense paid trip to Abu Dhabi for 10 days to compete in World Professional Jiu Jitsu Championship in April. Owning had a total of seven matches to win the blue belt 183 pound division, and then went on to win the heavy open class. Along with winning the San Diego tournament Owning won the coveted all expense paid trip to Abu Dhabi to compete. His flight, food, transportation, and hotel, are completely covered. He will be representing the US in competing against 20 other countries. He leaves for Abu Dhabi the second week in April.

Miwuk Indians working to upgrade

Amador County Parks

The Jackson Rancheria Band of Miwuk Indians has embarked on a major effort to upgrade every single park and ball field in Amador County. They have teamed up with the Amador County Recreation Agency (ACRA) and the good people of Amador County to begin a journey of friends and family coming together to take care of ourselves and our kids here in Amador. In addition to the effort with all the parks, the Tribe is helping schools with much needed items for their field maintenance projects, including lawn mowers, field drags, chalk machines, and new bases, as well as player equipment such as catcher equipment, batting helmets, pitching machines, uniforms, umpire equipment, and more. It is The Miwuk’s wish that the community come together to help make this dream come true for the children and grandchildren for many years to come. This is not about the Casino. This is not about ACRA. This is not about politics or anything else. This is only about the kids. The Tribe feels that the children of Amador County deserve the very best and they are committed to making that happen. They hope that many Amador residents will join them as sponsors of this amazing project. Right now the

Tribe and ACRA are working up at Mollie Joyce Park in Pioneer. So far the upper field has been stripped and is ready to receive sod and new infield dirt. They plan to create a new backstop and dugouts, new signage, and a few surprises they know the kids will really love. The Tribe is also in the process of clearing and brushing the entire 18 hold Frisbee Disc Course. Everyone’s help is needed to get this done throughout the county. You can sponsor part of a project or volunteer your time at one of the many field and park projects. Anything you can contribute will be greatly appreciated not only by the Tribe and ACRA but also by the children of Amador county. For larger sponsors there will be a a plaque displayed with your name and/or the name of your family or company on the item or at the location of your donation/sponsorship. Please know that 100% of all donations and sponsorships will go to the parks and fields. Not one dollar will be wasted or used for anything but improving the parks for the kids. For more information on sponsoring or volunteering, contact Venissa Morse at 223-8536 or vmorse@jacksoncasino.com.

Work has officially begun on building the new Calaveras County Courthouse. County Officials held a ceremonial groundbreaking at the site in San Andreas, which rounds out a trio of criminal justice facilities. According to reports, the new $45.4 million dollar Courthouse will be a neighbor to the new County Jail and Sheriff ’s Office currently under construction. Officials stated that the Courthouse needed to be built at the same time as the other facilities to save the county money on costs to transport inmates between the jail and the

Your TLSN.us Local Scoop News Budget-savvy home: Spruce up for spring on a shoe string

(ARA) - Even with a bare-bones decorating budget, you can still give your home a fresh look for spring. It just takes a bit of creativity and an open mind, according to Ginny Bean, publisher and founder of Ginny’s catalog and Ginnys. com. “One of the easiest and least expensive ways to spruce up your home is to subtract from what’s in it,” says Bean. Removing clutter is just one of Bean’s low-cost, high-impact tips for giving your home a seasonal lift. Clear the clutter. In the winter, it’s comforting to have stacks of books and magazines on coffee tables, and throws on couches. In the spring, you want open and airy. Put books on shelves, and magazines in a rack or basket. Tuck the throws in the linen closet, and pack away knick-knacks for a few months. Rearrange the furniture. Try floating furniture in the room rather than hugging the walls. It’s a great trick for making the space feel different and less structured. Swap out an item in your living room for one in your bedroom, or slide something from the kitchen into the dining room. Spring for some color. A few touches of bright, saturated color can refresh any decor, and distract the eye from items that might be a bit dated. No one will notice a worn coffee table if it has a bold, oversized vase sitting on it. There’s no need to break the bank. Think about pillows or placemats to incorporate

the colors you want. Accessorize. You can change your towels, shower curtain and bath accessories for less than $100. Jar candles are another inexpensive way to create an inviting room environment. Seasonal scents like honeysuckle, freesia and spring tulip add color, freshness and intoxicating fragrance. Go sheer. Replace heavy draperies with bright, light-weight curtains or sheers. You won’t believe the difference it can make. Just let them hang and blow in the breeze. Remake your bed. Put away that heavy comforter or quilt in favor of a lighter bedspread. Mix and match solid-colored fitted and top sheets with pillowcases in various patterns. Tuck the top sheet tightly all around and fold the edge at the head of the bed over your coverlet or blanket. Fold your bedspread down to rest across the foot of the bed. Add accent pillows to create an inviting, luxurious-looking bed. Assess your art work. Is your wall decor warm and cozy? Switch out a few pieces for something lighter and brighter. Plant an idea. Put at least one house plant in every room. Fill a low planter or kitchen serving dish with potting soil and some grass seed. When the grass is a few inches high, add Easter eggs or seashells for a conversation-starting centerpiece. For more seasonal decorating ideas and products, visit Ginnys. com or call (800) 487-9024 to order a catalog.

TAX TIP – CAPITAL GAINS Are you planning on selling any capital assets? If you are, 2012 could be the time to sell. Under the current law, as part of the “Bush tax cuts,” long-term capital gains are taxed at 0% for low income taxpayers, and 15% for higher income filers. Beginning in 2013 these rates are set to expire and the rate for long-term capital gains will increase to 10% for low income taxpayers and 20% for higher income filers. What about dividends. Qualified dividends are currently taxed at the same rate as long-term capital gains. However, they too are part of the “Bush tax cuts” and are set to increase in 2013. In 2013, qualified dividends will be taxed at ordinary income tax rates and they are scheduled to be as high as 39.6%.

If you think you may be selling any capital assets, now is the time to start planning. It may be in your best tax interest to sell in 2012 and not wait until 2013. Nancy Byer-Hauan will be providing tax tips and answering questions every week, so if there’s something you want to know, please email her at nancy@byerhauanea.com.

If you are wondering what a sunrise service is, Mark 16:2 tells us this about the women who came to anoint Jesus’ body after His death. “And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.” Our Sunrise service will be a time of remembering and celebrating the resurrection of Jesus. After the service we will be having a breakfast and time of fellowship. Our Morning service will be at 10:15 am. We will not be having an evening service so that people can spend time with family and friends. Come and join us!

Today, Columbia State Historic Park is the best preserved of California gold rush towns. As a popular destination for school living-history programs, special family gatherings, or a year-round getaway, Columbia State Historic Park offers a unique blend of museums, displays, town tours, live theater plays, shops, restaurants and attractions.

Joe’s Bar & Grill opens with ribbon cutting and fanfare

By Plez Hill Joe’s Bar & Grill in Lockeford drew a crowd of well-wishers to its recent ribboncutting ceremony sponsored by the Lodi District Chamber of Commerce. Besides the ribbon-cutting, the event was highlighted with chef prepared hors d’oeuvres and entertainment. Richard Patane, Joe’s owner, said his facility would soon start expanding its kitchen so dinner banquets with seating from 20 to 250 could be held there. He said he is also looking forward to holding car shows, pool tournaments and hosting outstanding musical groups. “The reason why it is called ‘Joe’s Bar & Grill’ is because we celebrate all the athletes with the name Joe – from Joe Montana to Joe Frazier,” Patane added.

Richard Patane (center), owner of Joe’s Bar & Grill, prepares to officially open his business by cutting a ribbon with a giant pair of scissors. Joe’s Bar & Grill, with a myriad of flat TV screens, celebrates athletes with the name Joe – from Joe Montana to Joe Frazier.

Guitarist and Lockeford resident Stanley McFadden entertains the audience by playing a genre of classic acoustic rock music.

estate that also happens to be a run-down zoo in need of new, dedicated owners. Matt Damon, Scarlett Johansson and Colin Ford (who plays Damon’s son) all portray characters more grounded than their script. This story of a wild risk that paid off for one troubled family can be a joyful experience, just make sure any children watching don’t get their hopes up.

Q:

Could you give some information on the two actors who play Finch and Reese on “Person of Interest”? I don’t recall seeing either of them before, but I like them both and find the show exciting. -- Karen V., Roanoke, Va.

A:

Michael Emerson and Jim Caviezel play Harold Finch and John Reese, respectively. Many will remember Michael, 57, from “Lost,” where he played Ben. He’s also made the rounds on the cops-and-lawyers shows like “The Practice,” “The X-Files,” “Without a Trace,” “Law and Order: SVU,” etc. Prior to “Person of Interest,” Jim, 43, was best known for playing Jesus in Mel Gibson’s “The Passion of the Christ.” You can see Jim on the big screen later this year in “Savannah” and “Bliss!” and next year in “The Tomb” with Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Q:

I am so happy that USA Network’s “Fairly Legal” is finally back for another season. Can you give me any scoop for season two? -- Violet F., via e-mail

“Duets” is the latest vocal-competition show to hit the small screen, and it is indeed airing on ABC. Currently looking for contestants (abc.com/casting), this show stars Kelly Clarkson, Jennifer Nettles, Lionel Richie and Robin Thicke, who will travel the country looking for undiscovered talent to be their proteges, as well as duet partners.

Q:

I still miss seeing Leah Remini on “The Talk.” Any chance she’ll return? -- Hazel D., Akron, Ohio

Virginia Williams

A:

Not if Sharon Osbourne has any say, and it appears she does. Leah told fans on Twitter that “Sharon thought me and Holly [Robinson Peete] were ‘ghetto’ (her words), we were not funny, awkward and didn’t know ourselves ... She had us fired.”

A:

Write to Cindy at King Features Weekly Service, P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475; or email her at letters@cindyelavsky.com.

“We get to see more facets of Lauren this year, which is great,” Virginia said. “We get to see her at home, for example. Everything still revolves around Reed & Reed, but we do see glimpses of Lauren at home: coming back from a jog, going on a date, having some sort of a life outside work. We get to see her with her hair down, literally and figuratively. She’s still quite guarded and protective and exacting and stylish and brilliant, but she’s a lot more comfortable with her position now.

I spoke with “Fairly Legal” co-star Virginia Williams, who plays Lauren Reed on the hit legal drama, and she gave me some spoilers.

PICKS OF THE WEEK “War Horse” (PG-13) -- This latest offering from Steven Spielberg has all of the visual splendor and classic-style sentimentality expected from the veteran film maker. It starts with an English farm boy named Albert (Jeremy Irvine) being tasked with raising and training a colt racing stallion called Joey. When the two are separated by World War I, the horse braves an odyssey through ravaged Europe, making an impact in the lives of humans wherever he goes. The bulk of the story stays with the horse. While the majestic creature makes its way through the horrors of war, everything has that classic-movie sheen to it. While we’re supposed to feel for the horse, it seems like the mountains of human suffering are being glossed over. “We Bought a Zoo” (PG) -- Sometimes, you just have to take a big, crazy leap and give it your all. That seems to be the syrupy message at the heart of this based-on-a-true story. Benjamin (Matt Damon) is a let-go newspaper reporter who recently lost his wife. While looking for a new home where he can take his young daughter and teen son, he finds a run-down country

“Last season was all about Lauren proving to everyone else that she was capable and that she wasn’t just a trophy wife,” she said. “She could get the job done and could lead the firm. This season we see that she not only is extremely capable, but the firm ends up being better off than it was even before Teddy died.”

“Being Elmo: A Puppeteer’s Journey” (PG) -This isn’t a typical Elmo DVD-adventure, but it is about a young person with dreams that come true. This documentary follows Kevin Clash, Elmo’s puppeteer and voice. The film tells the story of Clash’s childhood aspirations to work with Jim Henson, and shows behind-the-scenes footage of Clash and the rest of the Muppets crew. Looking behind the curtain might seem like it could drain the magic from the Muppets, but it’s actually a peek into another dimension of their world. Colorful felt, buggy eyes and clever shots abound. It’s a magic trick that’s impressive even when you know how it’s done. Clash has been making puppets since he was a boy in the suburbs of Baltimore. Learning how Clash worked his way to where he wanted to be makes scrappy little Elmo even more endearing. “London River” -- In the aftermath of the London Underground bombings in 2005, two people cross paths while sorting through the terror and the tragedy. Elisabeth is a white Christian woman searching for her daughter. After putting up posters, she comes in contact with Ousmane, a black Muslim man from France who found a photograph of his son with her daughter. The two try to use each other to get to the bottom of what happened. The story and the performances make the film worthwhile, even if the message can seem a bit blunt.

didn’t win, but they were able to score twice as many points on Baylor and 6’8” Brittney Griner as last year’s team. Even though the outcome is predictable on those first games, it is still a thrill and an honor just to get to go. The tournament often happens during finals week, so the players, cheerleaders and band are given finals on the plane or in the hotel when they land. Lampson will cherish her memories forever. “It was one of the greatest experiences of my live and I will never forget getting to see Brittney Griner in person.” The season may be over for the basketball players, but the cheerleaders have one more competition to attend in Vegas. They have come out with first place wins at all of their competitions so far this year including a first at the King of the Bleachers in Long beach where they won, Biola took second and USC placed third. If you would like to see more pictures of the UCSB Cheer Team at games and competitions just “like” the UCSB Cheer Team on Facebook.

continued from Page 1 It isn’t easy to make a college cheer squad. You have to tumble, flip, cheer, dance and lift and do it better than you did in high school. Lampson cheered all four years at Galt High School and is now in her third year cheering for UCSB. The NCAA Tournament is a chance of a lifetime, but this wasn’t Lampson’s first trip. She was also lucky enough to go to Florida last year after the UCSB boys basketball team beat out Long Beach for a trip to The Dance. NCAA sends a private jet for the players, cheerleaders, band and boosters. NCAA also pays for the hotel and gives the students perdiem to help pay for food. This is a great help for broke college students who wouldn’t be able to afford the trip otherwise. “It was such a great experience and I feel truly honored because only half of our squad was allowed to go” says Lampson. This was also a time to get to know the players they cheer for and the band that plays for them. “I was ecstatic for the basketball players because they deserved it so much” explains Lampson. “They have a new coach and it was incredible how much work they put into practice and games this season. It was incredible to get to go on a private jet with the team, donors and band and get to develop more personal relationships with them.”

Shred It Event and Household Hazardous Drop-Off

GALT – The Household Hazardous Waste Drop-Off and Shred It events will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2012, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Galt Market. Items to be collected for the household hazardous waste event include: used oil, automotive fluids, batteries, pesticides, fertilizers, pool chemicals, solvents, used sharps,

fluorescent tubes, medications, paint and old household cleaners. Tires are also accepted, but are limited to passenger-vehicle size. E-Waste (televisions, computers, printers, appliances, cell phones, and most items with an electrical cord) is not accepted at the HHW event. Your private information isn’t limited to bank statements, tax returns and legal documents and contracts. Printed confidential materials are produced daily from medical records to planning documents. As the fastest-growing form of fraud, identity threatens to destroy personal credit ratings as well as reputation and security. Governments and regulators around the world continue to develop legislation to help protect individuals but prevention is the best solution. Residents can bring up to three file boxes full of documents to shred, or one garbage bag full of documents. You must be a resident of the City of Galt (residing within the city limits). Please bring proof of residency or a utility statement.

Lodi awarded $250,000 grant to fight gang crime The City of Lodi has been awarded a $250,000 State grant to bolster its anti-gang efforts. The California Gang Reduction, Intervention and Prevention (CalGRIP) grant will fund additional police and code enforcement efforts targeting gang activities, create an intervention and outreach program for youths at risk of joining gangs, and provide funding for community-based organizations to provide educational and counseling programs. The $250,000 CalGRIP grant, funded by the State’s Emergency Management Agency, is available over a two-year period. “Gang members are a blight on our community” Lodi Police Chief Mark Helms said. “This CalGRIP grant will take more of them off the streets and give families some help they need keeping their children from joining gangs.” Gang crime increased 25 percent from 2010 to 2011, according to Lodi Police Department statistics, with an increasing number of minors using weapons. The City’s extra enforcement will focus on east Lodi neighborhoods where most gang activity takes place. Grant funds will allow the Lodi Police Department to continue its high level of service throughout the community while applying extra attention to problem locations. “I think this will be a catalyst for the community to come together to reduce gang violence” said Chief Helms. “It opens the door for the Police Department to create and expand valuable partnerships.”

History of Angels Camp The City of Angels, better known as Angels Camp, is located on scenic Golden Chain Highway 49 near Highway 4 east of Stockton, California. The history of Angels Camp is similar to that of many of California’s Gold Rush towns. Settled in 1848 Henry and George Angel were soldiers serving under John C. Fremont during the Mexican-American War. When the California Gold Rush started, they tried their hand at prospecting, but decided they didn’t like the labor involved, so they set up a trading post, which became a camp, and eventually a town. The placers around their camp were very productive, but gave out after a few years, and the population began to dwindle until gold-bearing quartz veins were discovered in the town, which brought people back. Those mines operated for the next few decades, producing over $20 million worth of gold, processed by stamp mills in town. It was said that when the last mill finally ceased operations, the townspeople couldn’t sleep, the silence was so loud. Mark Twain also allegedly based his short story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Ca-

Angels Camp Business Association builds a better community

laveras County” on a story he heard at the Angels Hotel. The event is commemorated with a Jumping Frog Jubilee each May at the Calaveras County Fairgrounds, just east of the city. Now with a current Population of approximately 3,150, Angels Camp is a popular tourism destination. Not just because of the vast history and beautiful country side it also is the home of Moaning Caverns open year round for tours. Not to mention the recent opening of Greenhorn Creek, home of WPGA winner and Hall of Famer Patty Sheehan, and don’t forget New Melones Lake offers exceptional fishing and all types of water sports. The residents and merchants of Angels Camp appreciate their opportunity to live and work in this environment. They are well known for sharing their enthusiasm by being generously community spirited. Angles Camp is a town with a rich California history and a town that both residents and visitors can appreciate.

Since the 1960s, Angels Camp Business Association (ACBA) has been intricately involved in the life and commerce of the historic Gold Rush town of Angels Camp. The ACBA works to unify and organize the business community of Angels Camp in order to promote and facilitate business development, growth and goodwill. Their goal is to build better businesses for a better community. ACBA’s many activities include Fresh Fridays certified farmers market, Taste of Calaveras on the second Sunday of October, the Spring Fling and Autumn Harvest sidewalk sales, lighting and landscaping on Historic Main Street, a scholarship fund for Bret Harte High School students, and the annual Christmas Parade and Open House. Membership is open to any company doing business in Angels Camp as well as to individuals and retirees who are interested in making Angels Camp a better community. Membership provides excellent opportunities for networking, cross-marketing and promotion, keeping up with new business practices, and putting ideas into action. ACBA is an organization with a young attitude and an eye on the future!
