Livermore Man Wins $1,129,009.20
on Penny Machine at Jackson Rancheria
Skydiver falls to his death in Acampo
JACKSON, CA – Alberto Lopez from Livermore was supposed to be installing windows at a school on Thursday, April 12, but instead became a millionaire while playing a penny slot machine at Jackson Rancheria Casino Resort. When rain kept the students inside the room where he was supposed to be working, he decided to put the job off until Saturday and made the lucky decision to visit the casino. After playing at several other machines, he spotted an available MegaBucks® machine, one of his favorites, and sat down to play. Alberto says he put $100 in the penny machine, played for a little while, getting as high as $350 and as low as $45, when his luck came through and he hit the jackpot for $1,129,009.20. Alberto says “I could have got whip lash” from looking down at the screen in front of him and up at the giant marquee on top of the machine listing the big jackpot available. “Good thing there was a seat under me,” he added. He said the big win still hadn’t completely sunk it, but he figures he will use the
A sky diver died Thursday at the Parachute Center in Acampo after what appears to be a parachute malfunction. William L. Calhoun, 71, of Novato, California was reportedly an experienced sky diver who made several jumps a month. He landed in a vineyard off Jahant Road in Acampo, about 18 miles north of Stockton. “His parachute evidently opened incorrectly and he wasn’t able to release it, and he landed underneath a spinning parachute,” said Bill Dause, the owner of Parachute Center in Acampo. The man had what’s usually referred to as a “hard open,” and the malfunction is believed to have knocked him unconscious. “You’re going 120 miles an hour and if you get an instantaneous opening, then you are going from 120 to zero. It’s similar to running into a brick wall at, say, 100 miles an hour,” said Dause. Investigators from San Joaquin County and the FAA will look into the incident, but said it appears to be accidental. The last fatal skydive to occur at The Parachute Center was in June 2010, when a woman in her 30s visiting from Belgium died after her parachute apparently failed to open when she jumped from the plane.
money to pay off his truck, take care of some medical bills, and do something for his mom. As for his job, the 51-year-old construction worker said “gotta go to work Saturday. Can’t leave those kids without windows.” Alberto is the ninth person to win over a million dollars at Jackson

By Amanda Chaddock Staff Writer Senior projects at Bret Harte High School are no small feat. They are mandatory for every Bret Harte senior. The requirements for a senior project allow for many possibilities. The high school seniors must put in at least twenty hours of work, not spend more than $500, and it must benefit the community in some way. Many begin thinking about their projects as early as freshman year. This was certainly the case for Ryan Mendenhall. Being that he is passionate about fashion, Ryan always knew he wanted to put on a fashion show. So when Sue Richmond of Bling Boutique

Lots of things to shoot at Preston’s photo day.
On Photographer’s Day, you can roam the Castle on a self-guided tour. Visitors are allowed four hours to explore the non-restricted areas of the castle. This gives you the time you need to setup shots without rushing to keep up the pace of our normal informative tours. Note that the September 15 date includes twilight/evening light. Known today as the “Preston Castle,” the Preston School of Industry opened in 1894. By seeking to rehabilitate youthful offenders, the school offered a progressive alternative to San Quentin or Folsom. Vacant since 1960, the building now needs full restoration to become a self-sustaining community resource. The Preston Castle Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to restoring, preserving and providing utilization of an important California landmark. On June 13, 1894, the first wards were accepted
at the Preston School of Industry, and the school was proclaimed officially opened on July 1, 1894. The next year, electricity was installed by way of a water wheel powered dynamos for incandescent and arc lights. The Preston School of Industry remained open until 1960 when new facilities for the school were completed. The building remained vacant and fading into disrepair until September 10, 2001 when The Preston Castle Foundation received a fifty-year lease for the property. The Preston Castle has also been named a California State Historical Landmark (#867) and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NPS-75000422). Only 100 tickets available! You may bring models/hair dressers/make-up artists, just buy a ticket for them. $30 per person, located at 999 (end of) Palm Drive, Ione, CA. called the school inquiring as to whether any students were interested in putting on such a show, Ryan jumped at the chance. On Friday, March 30th, Mendenhall, along with friend Emma White, held their “Show of Hope” fashion show. The proceeds from the event benefitted Sierra Cancer Center in Sonora. Jewelry sales, a 50/50 raffle, and a silent auction were amongst the ways money was raised for the Center, in addition to the ten dollar entrance fee. The event was held in the Bret Harte High School Multipurpose Room and featured clothing from local shops including OVO, Bling Boutique, and Small Town Girl Boutique. Models included both Bret Harte students and girls from Etre Belle Studios in Sonora. The night began with a very moving speech given by Catherine Lewallen as she shared the story of her ongoing cancer struggle. Lewallen also stressed from experience the importance of money raised at events such as these for research and care. As Mendenhall was approaching his senior year, he remained unsure about which charity his show would benefit. Then his father was diagnosed with cancer. That is when Mendenhall became familiar with the Sierra Cancer Center. Mendenhall says of the center, “They really help in any way possible.” Donations to the Sierra Cancer Center go towards assisting patients in the community in many ways, from providing them with gas cards to helping them with their house payment. “I thought giving back to the Center would benefit many people,” says Mendenhall. In December, good friends Mendenhall and White decided to team up. White, looking to use catering as part of her project, decided to provide both the actual event and the rehearsal dinner with such services. Her parents supported her in obtaining the necessary ingredients while her place of work, The Kitchen at Newsome Harlow, lent her the catering equipment. In regards to the Sierra Cancer Center, White remarked, “I think it’s a great cause,” She added, “With Ryan’s dad battling cancer, it affects our lives personally.” Both high school seniors commented on the great amount of work that went into putting on the show. As Mendenhall said, however, “It is what you make of it.” Their efforts paid off being that “Show of Hope” raised over $2,000, an amount that greatly excited both White and Mendenhall. To conclude their senior project, the students must now put together a portfolio as well as give a presentation. In summing up the experience Mendenhall commented, “I met a lot of great people. I learned that people are so willing to help, it’s unbelievable.”

VET’S HALL continued from Page 1 the volunteer work crew. According to Commander Domondon, donations are still desperately needed to complete the more than 4,000 square foot Vets Hall and volunteers are needed to help complete the structure’s interior. In discussing the role of the Jenny Lind Veterans Memorial District in the construction of the new facility, Domondon said, “There is a common and understandable misconception in the community about the Jenny Lind Veterans Memorial District in that many in the community believe it is part of the American Legion. “That is false,” continued Domondon, “the Jenny Lind Veterans Memorial District is mandated by law to provide meeting places for veterans and veterans service organizations such as the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. It just so happens that the five elected board members of the Jenny Lind Veterans Memorial District are also members of the Valley Springs American Legion Post.”

Your TLSN Local Scoop News SCHOOL BOARD continued from Page 1 tors, teachers, parents and volunteers from West Point to Railroad Flat to San Andreas to Valley Springs. Zerral McDaniel, school board president, said the event provided the CUSD Board an opportunity to recognize those who selflessly give of themselves to help support the district’s schools and children. During the meeting, members of parent-teacher organizations and support groups shared ideas on how each of them raises funds to help support their respective school’s classrooms, programs and activities. For example, Amber Barci, president of the Jenny Lind PTO, said her organization holds fundraisers by sponsoring such things as a Casino Night, having book fairs, holding a Trunk or Treat at Halloween and giving a Santa’s Breakfast. Funds raised from these events, she said, go toward supporting, among many things, the school’s yearbook, vision and hearing screening, fine arts festival, purchasing blinds for windows for safety purposes and a literacy program. Crystal Montanez, vice president of the Valley Springs Elementary PTO, talked about how her organization raises funds through such things as a Bulldog Trek – an event where pupils receive pledges of money for walking around a pathway near the school, box tops, book fairs and dances. As with the other schools, some of the funds they raise go toward providing school supplies for classrooms. Sienne Swann, president of the Calaveras Grad Night Foundation, spoke about the importance of local businesses continuing to support graduation events at Calaveras and Bret Harte high schools. She said it takes thousands of dollars to support these events. After the meeting, parent and school volunteers continued to share fundraising ideas with each other and to ask each other questions. The CUSD Board served a large cake and refreshments to honor the parent-volunteers in attendance.
Crystal Montanez (standing), vice president of the Valley Springs Elementary Teacher-Parent Organization, describes the methods her organization uses to raise funds to support the school’s classrooms, programs and activities.

MOVIE ENTERTAINMENT ‘The Hunger Games’ Movie Preview
LUNCH SPECIALS!
Smash novel becomes blockbuster movie about freaky future The Hunger Games Starring Jennifer Lawrence, Woody Harrelson & Josh Hutcherson Directed by Gary Ross 142 min., PG-13
Hutcherson), the boy from her district who’s also chosen to compete, and Gale (Liam Hemsworth), her guy pal from back home.
Fan of author Suzanne Collins’ smash 2008 novel “The Hunger Games,” the first in a trilogy about a freaky future in which kids are forced into a fight to the death, scarfed down the movie over its box-office-busting, $152 million opening weekend. Jennifer Lawrence, who generated a buzz last year in “Winter’s Bone, anchors the action as Katniss Everdeen, the resourceful 16-year-old heroine who uses her Appalachian woodland skills to compete in the games, a perverse combination of TV reality show, gladiatorial match, popularity contest and survivor-ofthe-fittest kill-fest. Woody Harrelson is Haymitch Abernathy, a former games “victor” now serving as mentor to new competitors. Stanley Tucci, Elizabeth Banks, Donald Sutherland and Wes Bentley put their acting stamps onto other characters central to the story. Rocker Lenny Kravitz appears as Cinna, a stylist who primps contestants for their parade of frenzied public appearances that precede the games.
Like “Harry Potter” and “Twilight,” the two book-to-movie franchise high-water marks to which it will be measured, “The Hunger Games” serves young audiences a potent cocktail of teen spirit, fantasy, oppression and suppression, and a looming specter of death that snuffs out young lives too soon. But far beyond anything offered by those two movies, Lawrence is a strong role model for young girls with her character’s traits of sacrifice, courage, moral grounding in a world that’s lost its own, and a fierce will to fight for what’s right, even if it means bucking the system, sacrificing her own life, or sparking a revolution.
Looking ahead to a second movie and beyond, the film also sets up the framework for a romantic triangle between Katniss and Peeta (Josh
But while everything may be seasoned to taste for many of the 23.5 million people who made Collins’ books bestsellers, it doesn’t
quite measure up to an epic feast, especially for viewers without a love connection to its literary roots. Director Gary Ross seems to have trouble finding the right tone to meld the saga’s media satire and blood-curdling sci-fi shudders. The production values are serviceable, but rarely anything above pedestrian. The camera work, dominated by extreme close-ups and shaky hand-held shots, is often hard on the eyeballs. The sets and special effects look cheap, sometimes even cheesy. And there’s something troubling about a movie asking audiences to cheer for a young character, a child, really, whose survival depends on other children being slaughtered--even in a “tasteful,” PG-13 kind of way. An edgier movie, in stronger hands, could have (and perhaps should have) drilled down much deeper, and harder, into the troubling, brave-new-world nightmare of that horrifyingly dysfunctional futuristic scenario---and what it says about our modern-day appetite for destruction. But it’s pointless to be too picky about the meal when “The Hunger Games” is the hottest dish to come
“We Toss’em, They’re Awesome!” www.pizzafactory.com
out of the kitchen in months, if not years, and people can’t seem to get enough. The games have begun, and there’s more to come. If you don’t care to join in the feast and festivities, well, at least now you know what all the gobbling is about.

By Amanda Chaddock Staff Writer On Saturday, April 28, The Resource Connection will be holding its 13th Annual Children’s Fair at Bret Harte High School. The fair will run from 10am-2pm and offer an abundance of activities and information. This is a free event, with food and activities included. However, some food will be available for purchase if desired. “It is a great, wonderful event,” comments Kelly Graesch of The Resource Connection. “Parents receive rich information and make contacts, while children are socializing and having fun.” Among the 47 booths planned for the fair, The Serpentarium of Lodi will be providing entertainment with their snakes and other reptiles. First 5 Calaveras is partnering with Head Start to create a Reading Tent, complete with free books for the children in attendance. Power Up Fitness Studio will offer dancing while Five Claw Martial Arts provides karate demonstrations. A DJ booth playing children’s music will complement the fun atmosphere. In addition, there will be fire trucks present, both for the children to see and to offer information about fire safety. New Melones will be providing information on water safety and Big Trees will be there to teach environmental education. Preschools, the American Red Cross, the Food Bank, WIC, and many more organizations will be at the fair, ensuring that there will be a wealth of information available at the event. Also, there will be a diaper derby, obstacle courses, and a car seat safety check by Calaveras County Public Health. “This is a true community event,” says Graesch. Truly, so many different organizations from all over Calaveras County are coming together for one purpose—to celebrate children and their caregivers. With a usual turn out of about 350-400 people, the Children’s Fair is sure to accomplish this goal. The event is taking place during the nationally recognized “Week of the Young Child,” which was established with the intention of such celebrations. Indeed, events such as these will be occurring all over the nation, placing value on young children and those caring for them.

Donkeys and elephants have long been the symbols of the two biggest political parties in the United States, thanks to a cartoonist named Thomas Nast. In the 1870s, Nast drew a donkey to represent one party and an elephant to represent the other for Harper’s Weekly magazine.

The difference between a caucus and a primary is that a caucus is usually a meeting where party members use discussion to eventually choose a candidate, while in a primary, party members vote privately for their choice of candidate.
Presidential elections, which occur every four years, are managed according to rules set out in the Constitution. The system for electing the president in our democracy is called the Electoral College. You have to be eighteen years old to vote.
Help this candidate find his way to the press conference.
While both systems are ways to choose a presidential candidate, the processes are different, with the caucus being a more informal approach. The caucuses and primaries in each state also select representatives, called delegates, to attend the convention. Standards Link: Civics: Understand structure of political parties.
When all the state primaries and caucuses are over, each political party has a big meeting called a convention. Thousands of delegates vote to choose their party’s presidential candidate from the few most popular candidates chosen from the primaries and caucuses.

College is a system for electing the president of the Untied State. Presidential candidates choose electors from eech state to vote for them in the electoral vote. The number of electors for each state includes the state’s two senators plus that state’s U.S. representatives. The number of representatives depends upon how many people live in the state.
