HOME IMPROVEMENTS an you believe that we are in the middle of summer already? The theme of this issue is making our amazing island a “Destination Staycation.”

One of the luxuries of living on Long island is that summer becomes a tropical paradise. Surrounded by water with four coastlines, the Fire Island Ferries are right around the corner to take us to various parts of Fire Island. We also have our famous Hamptons, the beautiful east end and the energy of the city. We have so much right here to explore. However, with our busy lives, summer can slip away very quickly if you let it. Use our mid- summer issue of The LIst Magazine to put more sizzle in your summer and as a useful tool to find the best places to eat, shop and get away. We highlight a few of Long Island’s best kept secrets, such as Strip Steak in Great River and The Lake House in Bay Shore. These two restaurants, among many others on our island, are just a small part of what Long Island has to offer. Keep our magazine handy and never have a dull week or mediocre meal! Also, for those of you who love golf and want to get out of the heat, we want to introduce you to Eagle Golf. It just opened in Bay Shore. It’s new technology offers you a realistic indoor golf experience. Summer is here, so, get out and enjoy our wonderful Long Island... from shore to shore and east to west. We hope our suggestions can be a part of making your summer special. Our named professionals and contractors in the magazine are ready to help you when it’s time to start those “around the house” projects when you are ready to get off the beach. Drop us a line and like us on Facebook. We would love to hear about some of your favorite places. Remember, take time for yourself and your family and make some wonderful memories. Happy summer. Until next time,

Just for the Grill of it!

NEW SUMMER MENU...

1. HEAT UP THE GRILL: Keep the hood closed

to hold in the heat for at least 10 minutes prior to cooking. The temperature under the grill should reach 500 degrees Fahrenheit.

FEATURING SMALL PLATES

2. KEEP THE GRATE HOT AND CLEAN:

A LIGHTER DINING

Before grilling, scrub the hot grate w/ a wire brush or try a raw onion half than rub it with a tight folded paper towel dipped in oil and scrub again after cooking.

3. OIL IT UP: Oiling the grate before cooking will help food from sticking to it- A long handled brush is a must have for comfort and safety.

STYLE

THE INTIMATE STEAKHOUSE

4. GRILL YOUR VEGGIES: To intensify a vegetable’s natural sweetness, grill them over coals. Grill dense veggies using indirect heat.

5. SEASON: No, we don’t mean herbs and spices, just good old salt and pepper on quality steaks. Sprinkle a generous amount on steaks just before putting them on grill. For great baby back ribs, a Kosher salt rub is awesome, done an hour prior.

6. LINE IT UP: Align your foods on the grill in perfect precision! Not only does it look professional but it’ll help you keep track of which to flip first!

7. FLIP JUST ONCE:

For killer grill marks, rotate the steak 90 degrees after a couple minutes of grilling instead of every ten seconds!

8. GRIP, DON’T STAB:

Tongs are the answer when moving meat around the grill to be sure not to lose those precious juices.

9. KNOWING WHEN IT’S DONE: For steaks, chops and chicken poke the meat with your finger. Depending on the feel of the meat, you can tell if it’s done or not. Squishy means it’s rare! For large cuts of meat, use a meat thermometer, without touching the bone.

FEATURING

10. LET IT REST: Let the meat’s muscle fibers

OUR SUMMER

absorb the juices before eating. Meat served instantly will taste tough and dry. With the exception of ribs, chicken or fish, cover meat loosely with aluminum foil to prevent the surface from cooling to fast and let meat rest for approximately ten to fifteen minutes.

COCKTAIL LIST OUTDOOR “PORCH SEATING” PERFECT FOR DINNER OR COCKTAILS

Remember use precautions and barbeque responsible… Happy Grilling!

PRIVATE PARTIES AVAILABLE

MUST KNOW George Martin’s Strip Steak is situated in a turn of the century house in Great River, a stone’s throw away from the Great South Bay. Strip Steak appeals to the discerning diner who appreciates a truly upscale steakhouse experience offering savory dryaged steaks. A multitude of other options as offered such as chops, seafood and house specialties that are sure to be palate pleasers! Ask Bee About Hair Q: How can I take better care of my hair this summer? Don’t skimp on the products you need to keep your hair in check this season! If you live on LI you spend most of your summer weekends by the beach, or in the sun, the better you care for your hair by day, the better it will look when you style it at night! There really are things you can do to help your hair better Beehave this summer; here are a few of my favorite tips! Buy a Wet Brush. A must for your summer bag! Ask your stylist for a hydrating/moisture rich Sulfate Free Shampoo+Conditioner. In addition to your moisture cleansing and conditioning routine, separately purchase a purifying shampoo and conditioner (use once

weekly). This will remove build up and ensure your moisture shampoo+conditioner continues to deliver moisture optimally. I love all 3 hydrating shampoo+condtioner systems by UNITE and our own formulated O’Beehave puryifing and calming shampoo + conditioner. Paul Mitchell’s UV spray is my UV protection pick. Mist this on a large comb and distribute evenly through your hair for maximum coverage. Pre-blow dry and to eliminate frizz, I love 3, 7 Seconds by UNITE. This stuff is awesome! For frizzier, unruly hair, try UNITE’s Argon Oil Mist (De-Frizz), a little bit heavier formula with a heavenly scent! Lastly, don’t forget your HAT. Happy hair is healthy hair! So take care of it!!! MUST GO

A highly recommended place to eat, chef/owner Frank Genovas has created a casual, family style restaurant with a tremendous following for its outstanding southern Italian cuisine. They have all the traditional Italian dishes but the chef delights in being creative, and enjoys blending ingredients you may not expect on an Italian menu. An avid fisherman himself, the seafood is always sure to be fresh and delicious. A must try is his AMAZING seared tuna avocado whole wheat pizzette with wasabi drizzle, and a local favorite is his Chicken Romano. If you go you will agree. 10

Must Know

Rip currents or “tides” as they are more mistakenly called are the most dangerous beach conditions a swimmer can tackle. The danger with rip currents is not that you're getting pulled away from shore, but how you react. Getting out of a rip current is easier than you think. To successfully swim out of a rip current swim parallel to shore in other words do not swim toward shore but swim with the shore either to the right or left side of your body Because rip currents are pretty narrow in width you’ll be out of the “rip” in no time. What is a rip current? A rip current is a narrow stream of water traveling swiftly away from shore. Rip currents occur when water builds up on the beach instead of flowing sideways away from breaking waves as it normally should. Eventually, so much water builds up that the pressure cuts a narrow path through the waves back out sea. The resulting current can be 30 to 100 feet wide and can move at speeds up to 5 miles per hour. Rip currents are often around piers and jetties so it is wise to avoid swimming near these things. Look for rip currents before entering the water. A rip current looks like a small river on the water’s surface flowing away from the beach. They are sometimes brownish and foamy and can flatten incoming waves making the sea look calm. Once past the breakers the current will disperse frequently forming a mushroom shape.

It’s t He’s Back!

As one of the most successful entrepreneurs on the South Shore, Paul Barbara, former boating and mariner guru, is back after a 6 year hiatus.

r e n o i t i d n o C r Ai ! y e n o M e v a S &

With over 30 years of experience and a multitude of various business endeavors, Barbara looks forward to the challenges this new chapter in his life will bring. Paul says he will be renting 90- 100 slips for summer dockage as well as room for high and dry storage with ample room for over 300 boats for winter storage. He will provide complete facilities for service, fiberglass repairs and have lift capabilities for up to a 100 feet! It is Mr. Barbara’s intention to enter back into the brokerage boat sales as well and as he explores new boat lines to accomplish his entry back into a market he was very successful at. We wish him all the best.

Sweet Transitions

Kids are off to college. So now what? The redirection of your time and energy previously focused on your children can now be on yourself and each other and that is a very good thing. Kudos to Joanne and Hank Harvey from Brightwaters. Their three girls (triplets) left for college two years ago and it made them both take stock of personal interests and assets revealing to them areas of lifestyle that could now be attended to. Joanne always enjoyed keeping fit but took it to the next level once the kids left for school. She enjoys training hard, sets herself goals and now runs marathons including multi sport events. Hank who realized that his wife wasn’t staying home…quit and joined in. You read it right, He was a heavy smoker but decided it was time for him to get fit and do something for himself. Hank quit smoking, bought himself a long distance bike and rides. He lost more than fifty pounds and his family is happy because in essence it is the best thing for all of them.

THE

LOOK

Mixing vintage pieces with contemporary pieces creates a one of a kind, in trend look. Vintage Style in Modern Fashions By Dominique Maciejka From daywear to runway fashions, designers and fashionistas are finding inspiration from decades past. Trends are pulling elements from the turn of twentieth century thru the turn of the twenty-first century. New styles are reflecting back to nostalgic silhouettes with a contemporary spin. Lace is both lovely and light for the summer months. Layering lace is trendy now but reflects back to the early 20th century. Elegant tea dresses, layers of gauzy fabrics and cutwork lace are highly fashionable and very comfortable for warm weather. The 1930’s are making a huge comeback in eveningwear. The glamour of a low cut or draped back and empire waist can add extreme sex appeal without revealing a lot of skin. Long gowns and skirts with flared trains have a dramatic allure and flatter all figures.

A simple pencil skirt, reminiscent of those worn during the World War II era, is a classic staple piece every girl should own. The simple style has become classic and can be worn dressed up with a beautiful blouse and jewels, or dressed down with a tee shirt and funky baubles, for a casual look. The 1950’s-60’s are all the rage. With the popularity of Mad Men on television, coordinating Jackie Onassis style skirt and jacket ensembles are big, both at the office and happy hour. Silhouette hugging dresses, as well as waist cinched, full bottomed dresses, have a sophisticated and fun style for a night on the town. Pastel pink, coral and mint tones of these eras are this season’s hottest colors. The Bohemian can find fashionable and comfortable styles with inspiration from the 70’s. Highlights from the hippy-chic style are maxi dresses, long beads, flowing and braided hair, fringe, bell-bottoms, high waisted pants, sandals for day and platforms to party. To go for a punk edge, the 1980’s offer a tough tomboy vibe. Cut-off tattered shorts, stud embellished accessories, cropped tees, off shoulder tees, printed jeans, skinny jeans and neon colors, all reflect back to a time where big hair was big. Skip the hair but rock the rock and roll inspired duds! No matter what your style, referencing trends from the past century can inspire new looks. Silhouettes from eras before are making a comeback as new. Shop classic high quality shops for the basics, trendy shops for a modern touch, and vintage shops and your mother and grandmother’s attics for fun and unique pieces to mix and match! What goes around comes around, and the same can be said for fashion trends!

A Complete Home Remodeling Company Building Excellence for Over 20 Years

TREAT YOUR WHITES RIGHT White is not a color. White fabrics are bleached during manufacturing and then treated with optical brightness or fluorescent dyes. These treatments create the optical illusion of whiteness by enhancing the fabric’s absorption of light. That is why it is important to store your white garments away from the light. Exposure to light can break down fluorescent dyes, causing areas to discolor and stain. Don’t let a stain on a white item set, or allow a garment to get very dirty, it becomes very difficult to restore it to its original state. Because of the delicacy of the white dyes, it is important to bring your untouched, stained whites to a professional dry cleaner as soon as possible to handle your items with the proper care. Store your white items separately. When light garments are stored closely to dark garments, the sublimation of dyes occurs. This is when nitrogen gas causes dark dyes to redeposit on light garments, creating stains. Take the plastic off all of your garments and especially whites before storing them in your closet. Plastic bags will trap the humidity and gases around the garment, causing them to yellow. Feel free to ask Dan about your garment care. Islip Cleaners 464 Main St. 581.2960
