Welcome to our Special Celebrations issue!

Traditionally our first issue of the New Year premieres with a Love theme. Well what better way to celebrate Love than by two people joining together with the words “I do!”

Love is in the air and weddings are fully back to normal in 2023. There’s a good chance your calendar is already filling up with invites. I have an especially wonderful wedding to attend this year - my son Michael, my first born, is getting married! Kelly, his beautiful bride-to-be, has absolutely captured the hearts of our whole family. I couldn’t be happier for the two of them.

Congratulations to all the couples getting married, and to their parents. It is truly a momentous time for you both.

This issue started out dedicated to wedding planning, but we soon realized so many special events require the same attention to detail. Showers, proms, parties… inside you’ll find beautiful images and ideas, valuable information (including a complete 12-month wedding planner!), expert advice as well as hospitality services needed to help plan for any special occasion, whether you are hosting the event or just attending it.

After researching all the latest trends, and speaking with experts in the field for tips on what’s popular this year, we have come to the conclusion that there really are no “trends.” What has become popular for milestone celebrations is that everyone is doing it Their Way. With time comes change. Priorities shift, some of them for the better. Many traditions are still in place, but there are no rules; people are making decisions based on what makes them happy. Remember the best gift you can give to a loved one is to be receptive, supportive and allow their personality to shine through.

May all your special celebrations be filled with beauty, joy, laughter and Love.

See you around town,

Real Estate 27-31

Shine Bright

Jewelry adds a personal touch; it makes a statement about who you are and tells your story.

Different generations are likely to have different ideas when it comes to formal jewelry. Let the dress and personality be your guide. Statement earrings can be chosen to reflect personality, but the necklace should be in harmony with the dress. The style and color of the necklace should complement the dress, not compete with it. A bold necklace can infuse modern style into a formal look without overpowering it.

“Jewelry should enhance your look,” stated Vita Mazza, owner of Gemaginations Jewelry in Brightwaters. “Pale glass stones look elegant and add a touch of glimmer above the neckline. Bold jewelry can make a statement without being loud.”

A GIRL’S BEST FRIEND

Tennis bracelets and tennis necklaces are favored jewelry pieces for formal affairs,

and much more affordable due in part to the growing popularity of lab-grown diamonds.

“We are seeing a lot of couples who, for philosophical and/or financial reasons, are choosing lab-grown diamonds over earth-mined diamonds when selecting their engagement rings,” Joseph Tavella, owner of Argyle Jewelers in Babylon Village, told us. “Lab-grown diamonds cost 50% - 80% less than earth-mined; that’s significant. Physically, visibly, and chemically, they are identical to earth-mined diamonds. GIA and IGI grade lab-grown and earth-mined diamonds exactly the same. Without the laser inscriptions on the labgrown diamond, you would not be able to decipher whether it was an earth-mined or lab-grown diamond. Engagement ring stones are our biggest seller, but our customers have been purchasing more diamond jewelry in general. It’s really been a lot of fun!”

Whether your look is elegant, sophisticated or glamorous, the right jewelry can add the finishing touch.

LISTICLE

Here are some tips to keep in mind when selecting something beautiful to wear around your neck:

• A woman’s décolletage is a beautiful area, the necklace should not overpower it.

• When selecting a necklace, the general rule of thumb is to pick one that follows the neckline of the dress.

• V-necks work best with a pendant; chokers and statement necklaces go better with strapless and sweetheart necklines.

• No matter the neckline, the necklace should sit on your skin, not the dress.

• There’s nothing more classic than diamonds or pearls. These are timeless pieces that will look just as elegant now as they will in 25 years.

• Floral pieces with leaves or vines that display stones at the center of the flower give a romantic look, perfect for the prom, or an outdoor or vineyard wedding.

• If bling is your thing, take a cue from Old Hollywood - sparkle is key, but don’t overdo it. Pick one piece of jewelry to focus on, and let the rest be supporting characters.

Bed, Breakfast and Brides

The Ocean Bay House isn’t just a place to rest, but a home to make memories that last a lifetime. A grand and gracious home, this property is a beautiful venue for any type of celebration be it large or small. Smaller gatherings can be arranged in the house or on the grounds, and accommodated without any guest room rentals. Larger gatherings do require a two-night minimum, and can be paired with renting the entire home.

“We love hosting on-site events that vary from intimate dinner parties to large wedding receptions for our guests,” commented Liz Flore, Innkeeper at The OBH. “Bridal showers are very popular, and our location makes us the perfect accommodation for bachelorette weekends. There is plenty to do nearby, as we are close to both the beach and the village, which

has a wide variety of terrific restaurants and bars, along with relaxing spas and cute boutiques. The house itself is a great getaway too. There are so many wonderful spaces right within the home to enjoy and unwind in.

And of course there is breakfast! This is where the magic begins, and the aroma of freshly baked muffins fills the house. A beautiful table greets our groups with a morning spread to satisfy all taste buds, and the home becomes alive with laughter and good music while hair and makeup get done. Once dresses and suits go on, first looks have everyone crying and the photo backdrop is stunning from every angle. We have a lot of fairy-tale moments here."

Able to accommodate 24 guests, the house is perfect for wedding parties and out-of-town guests and family members. The nine spacious, well-

appointed guest rooms and suites all have luxurious ensuite bathrooms. A beautiful blend of old and new, each room is unique in its own way, tastefully pairing original details and antiques with updated amenities. Plush king beds, flat screen TV’s, minirefrigerators, individual thermostats and, of course, complimentary Wi-Fi are standard in each room for guests’ convenience.

Ideally located in the vibrant walkable village of Bay Shore, The Ocean Bay House is minutes away from beaches, boating, parks, casual and fine dining, as well as a ferry ride from Fire Island and train ride from Manhattan. Whether hosting an event or planning a weekend getaway, the superior level of service and luxurious accommodations make The Ocean Bay House an excellent choice for any special affair.

Love In Full Bloom

Flowers are a key component of any special event and one of the first things guests notice. They set the mood with their beauty, color, elegance, and style… and will likely be in nearly every photo of the big event!

Arrangements and Centerpieces

With flowers in all shapes, sizes and colors, there is no limit as to what can be done. From simple, minimal arrangements, to unique flower & fruit centerpieces, or extravagant floral designs, there is something for every style and budget. A centerpiece or small bouquet should be on every table, and arrangements displayed in the foyer, the ceremony area and also the restrooms.

Traditional glass vases are giving way to more creative options for centerpiece vessels. Rustic baskets, wooden crates and decorative ceramic or pewter urns bring an element of style that adds to the overall look and theme of the affair.

Types of flowers should also be considered depending on the time of year the wedding is taking place. Dried and unusual flowers are suitable for both vintage and modern weddings. Less structured arrangements that incorporate dried blooms and natural elements like seed pods, dried grasses and other lasting botanicals can make for some pretty wow-worthy wedding décor.

1* 2* 3* MUST KNOW
Above moon gate by Hometown Flower Co.

Arbors & Arches

While many couples conduct their wedding ceremony in places of worship, plenty of couples are choosing to publicly declare their love and commitment to each other outdoors beneath some type of decorated structure. These structures are commonly referred to as arbors, arches, or chuppahs. Available in a variety of shapes and sizes, arbors transform any beach, backyard, park or garden into a perfect spot to tie the knot.

Circular arches or hoops, also known as moon gates, are growing in popularity. History states they were believed to offer good fortune to those who passed through them. A traditional architectural element in Chinese gardens, English gardeners borrowed the design from China in the late 19th century, and American gardeners quickly followed suit. If you are using a moon gate as a backdrop for your ceremony, be sure to walk through it for good luck!

Although the different types of structures have both cultural and religious significance, they also serve as the décor for Mother Nature’s landscape. A beautiful arbor can define an outdoor ceremony, and serve as an excellent photo backdrop. With the addition of flowers, fabrics and decor, arches can become part of your theme, not to mention a gorgeous place to exchange vows at the end of your aisle.

Bridal Bouquets

The practice of brides carrying bouquets dates back to ancient times. Brides carried fragrant herbs & spices tied together with ivy - the herbs were to ward off bad luck; the ivy represented an unbreakable bond.

Fast forward to 2023, the bouquet has evolved into much more than a banisher of bad luck; it is more than something to keep the bride's hands from fidgeting as she walks down the aisle; the bridal bouquet is the beautiful accessory that ties together the fashion, design and décor of the wedding. Evolution at its finest.

Traditional, cascading, minimal, or loose & wispy, the bridal bouquet is created based on personal preference and personality. Regardless of the bouquet style, it is important to balance the size, color, and types of flowers used. The size of the bouquet should be proportionate to the size of the bride, and the flowers should mirror the colors and theme of the wedding.

Not all brides are bouquet carriers; some opt to buck tradition and brave the aisle sans a bouquet. Carrying lanterns, baskets or floral wreaths are creative alternatives. Moreover, it’s becoming rather popular to see dog-owning brides hold a single bloom in one hand and the leash to her best (and formally dressed) furry friend in the other.

Greenery & Garland

Fresh or faux garland and greens can frame and define a space. They will brighten and totally transform any room or area when dressed with string lights. Round bistro light bulbs create a modern farmhouse vibe and are excellent for illuminating a dark area; traditional string lights add just the right amount of twinkle to make a space romantic.

Hair Flowers

Brides, bridesmaids, flower girls, and even pets look beautiful adorned in a halo of fresh or faux blossoms. Colorful, oversized dahlias are perfect for a bright and majestic flower crown, while a single rose paired with sprigs of baby’s breath can add just the right touch of romance.

ASK THE EXPERTS

If there was ever a time to take up a good skincare routine, it’s in the lead up to your wedding. Having flawless skin is an essential part of feeling confident and beautiful on the Big Day. We chatted with the experts at Drew Patrick Salon and Medical Spa in Bay Shore for some advice on skincare…

LIST: What do you recommend for someone who is just looking to elevate their skincare regimen, and when should they start?

DP: Elevating your skincare regimen to prepare for your wedding takes time and planning. To achieve skin textural changes, you should start planning 6 - 10 months prior to your special day. One of the most exciting and effective treatments we may recommend is the VI Peel. There are different VI Peel formulations that treat different concerns: lift pigment, remove sun damage, alleviate discoloration caused by acne scarring, or soften fine lines and reduce wrinkles. To achieve optimal results, a series of peels is best - so plan ahead! No matter your age, VI Peel is one of the treatments we recommend to help you look your best on your wedding day.

LIST: What is the best way for someone to determine what treatment(s) will be most effective for them?

DP: It’s always best to come in for a consultation prior to starting any skincare treatments. Everyone has unique skincare concerns and goals. Scheduling time with one of our licensed estheticians or our medical staff is recommended for a skin assessment to customize your treatment and regimen based on your areas of concern. Speaking with our staff during a consultation will open a dialogue about how to look and feel your best for your special day, and map out how to achieve your unique goals.

LIST: When it comes to injectables, such as Botox and fillers, what insight can you give a bride, mother of the bride/groom or anyone who is prepping for the big day?

DP: Botox and fillers are a perfect way to look fresh and well rested on your wedding day. Adding injectables to a beauty regimen can help brides, mother of bride/groom, or wedding guests achieve significant results without

surgery or permanent change. Botox softens fine lines and wrinkles, while lip and cheek filler make you camera ready. Botox is recommended every 3 - 4 months, while filler should typically be refreshed every 9 – 12 months. It's important to stay ahead of your injectables by scheduling an appointment at least a month before your wedding day. This will allow any swelling or bruising to subside. Many of our clients plan a year or more in advance if it is their first time getting fillers so they know what to expect and how they would like to look and feel.

Beauty Prep Advice for the Big Day from Susan Halpert and the Beauty Crew at Beauty Mark Spa & Bridal Studio.

We asked master makeup artist Susan Halpert, owner of Beauty Mark Spa & Bridal Studio, for some tips to look your best kind of beautiful for your wedding. Here’s what she told us…

HYDRATE. Of course we’re going to recommend you increase your water intake to improve your complexion. It helps remove toxins from the body so you will be less likely to have blemishes and irritations. Proper hydration leaves skin radiant and helps improve elasticity, making skin more plump and wrinkles less prominent, which makes for the best makeup application.

TEND TO YOUR TEETH. Have your teeth professionally whitened a few months before the wedding. You will be smiling and posing for photos all day, make sure your teeth are pearly white.

SCHEDULE A HAIR & MAKEUP

TRIAL. This is very important for the makeup artist, hair stylist and the bride. Bring reference photos, including one of your gown, so they have a clear vision of what look you are going for. Having a consultation with your beauty team and trying different looks beforehand will ensure that the look you are wearing on your wedding day is

perfect for you.

EYELASH EXTENSIONS. By far the biggest bang for your buck. They will not harm your natural lashes. Have your lashes done 3 months before your wedding. They are easy, pain free and you won’t feel them. Book fill-in appointments every 3 weeks to maintain amazing lashes for your wedding and honeymoon.

USE WATERPROOF PRODUCTS. Apply waterproof everything! We always recommend airbrush foundation as it will not come off until washed off. If tears of joy run down your face try not to wipe them, blot them instead. Take a quick touch-up break after the ceremony if needed.

A FEW BEAUTY PRODUCTS TO KEEP ON-HAND: A translucent pressed powder compact with a mirror, blotting papers, and lipstick or tinted lip gloss are essentials for the wedding day. Lumify eye drops will help keep a bright refreshed look, and bring a few Q-tips to retouch your eye makeup or remove mascara smudges.

For over 50 years, RSVP Tuxedos’ two locations have provided high-fashion designer tuxedos and suit rentals to much of Long Island.

With the momentous shift in demand for online stores vs. brick-and-mortar retail, RSVP owner Michele recognized it was time to shift her business as well, and decided to close both the Bay Shore and Commack locations.

“In the interest of best servicing our clients with the ease and convenience of online shopping, we have transitioned RSVP Tuxedos to a shop-at-home experience that offers the benefit of our expertise. It allows us to offer a more personalized experience for grooms and their wedding party,” Michele explained.

“Our customers now can browse online, have consultations, select suits and accessories, and schedule at-home tryons and alterations all at their convenience. This allows us to give clients information about suits and fit prior to them trying anything on in-person. No in-store visit is needed; we come to them and act as a concierge. We get to know them better. They have our undivided attention without disruption, which allows for a more enjoyable experience for everybody involved. Invite the groomsmen over and we’ll take care of the rest. If they are out of state, we can have their order delivered or drop-ship right to them.”

“As far as what’s trending, it’s hard to say…each groom has his own individual style and chooses a suit that fits that style. We take pride in making sure all our clients are welldressed and confident for their occasion.”

For the Party, For the Prom and For Mom

FOR THE PARTY

There are fewer 'rules' for bridal parties today, and many are opting for more variety in lieu of a matchy-matchy look. Some parties are choosing to match in color but mix up shades, styles or fabrics. The Big Day is a long one for the wedding party, so selecting a comfortable, fuss-free dress that you will love donning again after the wedding is key. Cocktail dresses and sleek satin and silk evening gowns in shades like champagne, taupe and black are trending because they can be worn again outside of the bridesmaid role. You can never go wrong with the classics.

While the wedding gown is the most important piece in the bridal wardrobe, the after-party outfit can undoubtedly be the most fun. White is the choice for many brides, but anything goes when it comes to color. From mini dresses in sparkly fabrics to silky jumpsuits and carefree silhouettes, the after-party outfit is all about personality and comfort.

FOR THE PROM

Choosing a prom dress that makes you feel beautiful and confident should be a fun and exciting experience! We spoke with Eva, owner of women’s designer and formalwear boutique Eva of Sayville, for a peek into what’s trending for this year’s prom dresses…

“2023 prom dresses are gorgeous! Very sleek with curvy silhouettes in brightly colored beautiful iridescent, shimmering fabrics - yellow, hot pink and blue are very popular. This year is all about the embellishments: feathers, feathers, feathers! Dresses have intricate full-length beading, sequins, and hot stones - one of this year's hottest trends. When light hits them they reflect a unique shine that really sparkles. The best advice I can give is to shop now! Availability will be limited soon. We carry a wide range of styles and sizes, including plus sizes, and have master seamstresses on site for custom alterations.”

FOR MOTHER-OF-THE BRIDE AND GROOM

This is a big day for mom. Not only is she responsible for the bride or groom’s very existence, she is also considered a host of the wedding. Mom deserves a dynamite dress. Here are some things to keep in mind when shopping for The Outfit:

START EARLY. In general, when shopping for the bride’s wedding dress, mom should also look for hers. Eva recommends to start shopping at least 6 months before the wedding day. It should provide enough time to find something that’s favorable and suitable.

TAKE CUES FROM WEDDING HUES. It’s always best to steer clear of white and ivory, or any other color that might compete with the bride. Traditionally speaking, suitable mother of the bride/groom dresses should complement the wedding party’s theme and color scheme, not clash with it. Avoid bold or flashy colors that take the attention away from the bride, like bright yellow, red, and vibrant orange. Choosing a similar shade to the bridal party dresses is also a good option.

“Pastels, champagne, navy and rich jewel tones, like forest green, burgundy and royal blue, are popular colors that look stunning for mother of the bride or groom dresses,” commented Eva.

THINK CLASSIC SOPHISTICATION Mom should appear attractive and ageappropriate, yet understated, to avoid upstaging the leading lady. However, a matronly or frumpy sack with a stiff, boxy jacket is just unflattering. Mom’s dress should be in line with the wedding party, be it a long elegant gown or a lovely cocktail dress with a soft wrap.

“Silk, taffeta, and especially poplin are very popular fabrics with moms. Beading and sequins add an elegant, subtle sparkle, appropriate for a mother of the bride or groom,” said Eva.

SKIN & BARE IT. The amount of skin mom is comfortable showing is important and needs to be factored into dress style and fabric. Transparent sleeves are striking and subtly sexy while masking any flaws. Classic, everlasting lace is a sheer, delicate fabric that can provide semicoverage over otherwise bare necks, shoulders, arms, and backs.

EVA OF SAYVILLE EVA OF SAYVILLE

“Times have changed, so has dress etiquette. There are no hard rules for the mother of the bride or groom; they are choosing to wear a dress they feel comfortable, happy and beautiful in,” Eva stated.

COORDINATE The long-standing tradition that the mother of the bride dress sets the tone for the mother of the groom dress is declining. Feeling comfortable and confident surpass matching each other as long as they avoid clashing. Get together to discuss harmonizing styles and colors. If both want to wear the same color, consider shade variations to create a balanced blend.

BEST FOOT FORWARD. General rules for shoes: if the hem is sparkly, then go for a statement sparkly shoe. If the dress is a clean satin or crepe fabric, then consider a clean pump, soft lace, or open-toe. If the dress is lace, keep with a lace shoe. If you can't find a fabric that matches well with the dress, then your safest bet is a clean shoe. Keep in mind, you’ll be dancing all night, so be sure they are also comfortable.

Layers of Love

Cakes are symbolic of celebration. They are a way for people to express themselves with a unique and beautiful element that takes center stage and captures guests’ attention all at once. The cake presentation is considered one of the best parts of any event; it brings everybody attending the gathering together to sing, cheer on, and applaud the main star(s) of the party. It is a joyful and memorable moment, followed up by a sweet slice of deliciousness.

When deciding on a cake, it’s important to consider how extravagant or traditional your affair will be, and design a cake that is in line with your celebration style. With the new wave of artistic baking, there's a stunning cake idea out there for everybody. Inspiration for design ideas can come from floral arrangements, color palette, fashion style, and even invitations. Be it a wedding, birthday, shower, anniversary or any special occasion, here are cake decorating trends that some of our local and very talented expert bakers are using to create spectacular cakes that steal the spotlight:

BOLD STATEMENT CAKES

These are one-of-kind cakes, as unique as the events they are created for, that will make guests do a double-take. In lieu of a traditional

white cake, these cakes may have bright, bold, rich or metallic colors, uneven tier heights, alternative textures, messy buttercream, and mid-tier pedestals. From dramatic to fun and whimsical, the options for a bold statement cake are endless.

SEPARATED TIER CAKES

Cake pillars are used to support each tier of the cake and are usually hidden inside the cake or with icing. Cakes with separated tiers use visible pillars which can create a taller and more extravagant cake tower. The space between pillars can be left open, or filled with fresh flowers, fruit or even seasonal décor.

FLORAL AND IMPRESSIONIST CAKES

Be it fresh flowers and vines, or intricate sugar blossoms, incorporating flowers is one of the prettiest and most elegant ways

to decorate a cake. Professional cake decorators use frosting, sugared petals and other decorative sugar adornments to "paint" the cake with delicate floral details and brushstrokes, often mimicking the floral arrangements. The end result is reminiscent of artwork from Impressionist painters, like Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir.

INDIVIDUAL MINI CAKES

Whether it’s a pint-sized cake or a cupcake, individual servings continue to be popular. This makes for a fun and decorative dessert display because it allows for a variety of flavors, colors and decorations. These can be served as an alternative, or in addition to, serving just one large cake.

CUSTOM AND FAMILY TOPPERS

Personalized words or custom mini-statues add a special touch. Couples who are marrying after they have started their family are requesting toppers that include the kiddos, or even their pets. If your baker does not make toppers, these custom pieces can be ordered from an artisan shop like the ones on Etsy. It’s a fun idea, but do notify your baker so they can provide the proper dowel support.

DESSERT TABLES

These decorative and elaborate dessert displays offer an eye-catching mix of bite-sized desserts and confections like donuts, cupcakes, cookies, brownies, pastries, tarts and parfaits. Dessert tables are a great alternative (or addition!) because of the variety of desserts that can be presented. There’s bound to be something sweet on the table that will please every guest.

Fun Facts

• Did you know wedding cake has been a part of the ceremony since the ancient Greeks and Romans? As part of the nuptials, the groom broke bread over the bride’s head to represent good luck and fertility.

• During the Middle Ages, cakes were high-stacked and the newlyweds would kiss over them. If they were successful in kissing without knocking the cake over, then it was believed they would be blessed with many children.

• Taking the goal of the bride’s fertility a step further, the English decided that child-bearing would be best increased by throwing the cake at the bride. Those crazy Brits!

• The cake cutting ceremony, where the hand of the groom is placed over that of the bride’s, is to show his support and promise to take care of her and their future, and the symbolism of the couple feeding each other is to show others that they promise to look out for each other forever. How sweet!
