FALL IN LOVE WITH AUTUMN

LONG ISLAND WINE COUNTRY CELEBRATES 50TH ANNIVERSARY

DOUG YOUNG

A Toast to Tradition and Growth: Cheers to 50 Years of Long Island Wine Country

Long Island's winemaking legacy, often overshadowed by more familiar names like Napa and Bordeaux, has quietly matured over the past half-century into a force to be reckoned with. Nestled along the North and South shores, our vineyards tell a story of passion, dedication and commitment to producing exceptional wines that are uniquely Long Island.

The roots of this journey trace back to 1973 when Alex and Louisa Hargrave courageously planted the first vineyard in Cutchogue. Their vision, coupled with a fervent love for the land, ignited a chain reaction. Others soon followed suit, and what started as a modest fling with grapes evolved into a thriving industry that now boasts 57 distinct wine producers spanning the North and South Forks, and western Suffolk County.

Long Island Wine’s 50th Anniversary was celebrated at Cutchogue’s Peconic Bay Vineyards back in August. The gathering hosted more than 35 Long Island wineries coming together offering a remarkable showcase of our region's diverse and exceptional wines. The event's focal point was not just the wine, but the profound sense of community that has grown alongside the vines…a fitting tribute to the pioneers who shaped the course of Long Island's winemaking journey.

Our island’s unique environment, shaped by distinct soil compositions and a maritime climate, is

what bestows a character to our wines that's unmistakably Long Island. The East End’s fertile, sandy soils foster flavorful grapes that carry the essence of the surrounding waters. Being situated right beside the Atlantic Ocean is also a key component which allows for a wide variety of grapes to be grown.

Moderated by the surrounding waters, our summers typically do not get too hot, or winters too cold. It’s this particular pairing of land and sea that yields Long Island’s variety of world-class wines, from rich whites to delicate roses and full-bodied reds.

As we raise our glasses to commemorate this 50-year milestone, we're not only celebrating the past but also looking ahead to a future that's ripe with potential.

The Long Island wine story is far from complete; it's an ongoing narrative of growth, innovation, and the unbreakable bond between the land and the table.

So here's to the dreamers, the doers, and the believers in the magic of our vineyards. Cheers to 50 years!

ELEVATE YOUR STYLE WITH THESE MUST-HAVE PIECES

This year, the fashion scene buzzes with new trends and revived classics, promising a sartorial delight of luxurious fabrics and captivating details. Whether you're a fashion enthusiast or seeking a wardrobe update, here are some key pieces and accessories that should be on your list.

Denim Reigns Denim is reclaiming the throne this fall, and it's not just jeans; denim dresses, jackets, jumpsuits and skirts are ruling the runways. Look for classic jeans in long, lean styles that elevate your silhouette, and explore versatile wider-legged options that can be paired with almost anything. Cargo details add a touch of practicality and style to this beloved fabric.

Blazers with a Twist Blazers are getting a contemporary update with details such as denim trim, leather trim and quilting. Plaids, bouclé, and vegan leather fabrics add depth and sophistication to this classic jacket. Fusing traditional and modern elements makes

these blazers a must-have for effortlessly chic layering.

Top it Off Tops and sweaters are taking on a more fitted approach, providing a sleek and sophisticated look. Enhance your basics with printed mesh and stretch lace tops that can stand on their own or layer beautifully under jackets. This fusion of textures adds depth and interest to your ensemble while keeping you cozy and stylish.

Sensational Skirts

Long skirts are back with a versatile range of fabrics and silhouettes. Whether you prefer long and lean styles, pleated designs, or voluminous peasantstyle dirndls, there's a skirt for every mood. Vegan leather, knits

and denim offer a variety of textures to choose from.

Luxe Holiday Fabrics

The holiday season ushers in opulent fabrics such as velvet, satin, mesh, sequins, and fur. These luxurious materials take center stage, transforming timeless pieces into lavish statements. They infuse a touch of glamour into your attire, ideal for festive gatherings.

Vest Revival Vests are back in the limelight, offering a range of styles from traditional fitted cuts to oversized silhouettes. Embrace the warmth and style of sherpa, fur and plaid patterns. These vests add a touch of flair to your outfit, whether layered over sweaters or paired with long-sleeve tops.

Autumn Accessories Woven and sculptural handbags and totes are stealing the show. Pieces crafted from natural

and vegan leather and woven neoprene add artistic dimension to your ensemble. Layered chains and charms continue to shine, while statement necklaces and clusters of jewels are making a triumphant return.

Palette and Patterns

This fall's color palette is a captivating mix. You’ll see shades of green, vibrant pops of pink and red, and jewel tones like teal, sapphire and purple. Classic neutrals provide a balanced contrast, while the ever-timeless black remains a New York staple. Patterns range from romantic florals to bold geometric shapes and traditional plaids, always a must-have for cold-weather outfits.

Whether you're drawn to the allure of denim, the opulence of luxe fabrics, or the artistry of statement accessories, this season has something extraordinary for everyone.

Welcome Autumn Into Your Home

Before fully embracing Halloween decorations and all-things-pumpkin, here are ways to incorporate subtle touches throughout your home to welcome the new season.

Think pillows and throws in earthy tones like rustic brown, rich olives and yellows as a focal point against a creamy color palette. For a cozy and inviting ambiance layer chunky knit blankets on sofas, armchairs, and atop your bed, and swap out lightweight summer rugs for plush ones that feel luxurious underfoot. Soft candlelight in scents like cinnamon and apple spice create an inviting atmosphere as the days grow shorter.

Bring the outdoors inside by filling urns with branches of colorful leaves, sunflowers, or dried wheat bundles. Display harvestinspired décor like wooden bowls filled with apples, pears, and gourds on kitchen counters and tables for rustic charm. Dress up windows, doors, and walls by hanging fall-themed wreaths or swags.

Create a heartwarming welcome for friends & family with mums, pumpkins, and lanterns greeting them on your porch or entryway.

Dancing with Divine Timing: Embracing Life’s Perfect Choreography

Divine timing suggests that everything happens in life at the right moment; it suggests that there is a higher purpose at work, guiding events and opportunities in our lives. Believing in this requires patience, trust, and surrendering to the natural flow of life. For local entrepreneur Kelly Peckholdt, the power of divine timing has unfolded a perfectly choreographed journey that began with her very first dance steps.

We caught up with Kelly to get the scoop on the last few years of her life, which include the expansion of her 11-year-old business, Positions Dance Studio in Babylon Village, the launch of her newest venture, Babylon Barre in Lindenhurst, and, of course, the momentous arrival of her son, Everett. How is she managing it all?!

“COVID taught me to let go and follow what the universe has in store for me...and how to pivot and be prepared for anything,” Kelly explained. Well 2020 certainly saw no shortage of pivotal moments. Kelly practiced her footwork while navigating the pandemic as a business person and community leader. It was during this time that she and her husband decided to grow their family by pursuing adoption. “That was an even bigger lesson in letting go of control. We had to believe our baby would find us whenever the time was right.”

Kelly planted another seed that year. “I always knew I wanted to open a Barre/Pilates studio one day. I originally wanted to do it in 2020, but COVID didn’t allow that, so I started doing something small every day toward my goal - putting a little money away, working on a logo, etc..” With plans for a second studio on hold, Kelly continued to focus on and grow Positions, which she considers her first baby, and began renovations to expand and update the studio she danced in as a child. Yet, even with enlarging and renovating Positions, the need for a second space had become apparent...hence Babylon Barre was born.

After searching for the right location for quite some time, Kelly decided to open her new business in the Village of Lindenhurst, itself in the infancy stage of an exciting revitalization program. The progressive and active village government was a plus for the evolving entrepreneur.

“I love the local community in Lindenhurst. They are very enthusiastic about everything that’s happening,” Kelly commented. “I think it’s great that the Village has put it to a town forum and asked the residents what they want to see in their community. It’s an exciting time in Lindenhurst Village right now.”

And timing is everything. A month after signing the lease for Babylon Barre’s studio at 182 S. 1st Street, they got the call. A baby. Kelly and her husband were going to be parents. It was really happening. A few months later, Everett was born. “With the adoption becoming more certain, it worked out in our favor that there were so many construction delays with the new studio because it gave us time to travel to North Carolina to adopt our son.”

“Everett was immediately thrust into the chaos of entrepreneur life. At only two months

old, it seemed suddenly but seamlessly, the baby was at the opening of Babylon Barre and is now a regular at the weekly Mommy-n-Me class (at Positions). Babylon Barre has become my Zen place,” Kelly laughed.

Life continues to keep Kelly on her toes. Just as she’s settling into her ‘new normal’ as a busy mom and owner of two successful studios, a New York Times article “announced” the Pilates comeback. After being pronounced dead in 2015, it re-emerged in 2023 from the fitness trend graveyard because of its added mental health benefits, including confidence and focus. As it strengthens the core, it also focuses on the mind-body connection, something Kelly has known for a long time... and largely what inspired Babylon Barre.

“I have practiced and studied this since I was 18 years old,” Kelly stated. “Pilates is having a moment, and it’s the perfect opportunity to educate more people in something I am passionate about. We live in a world of instant gratification and sometimes it’s hard to slow down and have patience for the things we want, but everything unfolded for me exactly when it was supposed to,” she shared, “and I’m so grateful."

Empowering Your Kids with Life Skills: A Guide for Parents

The Shift from Parenting to Mentoring

alternative choices. Encouraging them to reflect on their decisions and evaluate how those decisions impact their lives empowers them to take ownership of their actions and develop a sense of personal responsibility.

As parents, it's natural to want the best for our children. However, sometimes in our efforts to protect and guide them, we unintentionally rob them of essential life skills. Instead, we should empower our kids with the values and skills we think are most important before they leave home. We can do this by transitioning from being a disciplinary parent to becoming a mentor, guiding them through decision-making and teaching them how to think.

By understanding the importance of fostering independence and selfreliance, we can equip our children with the tools they need to navigate the world successfully.

During the early years of parenting, our primary role is to establish discipline and ensure our children's safety. However, as they grow older, it becomes crucial to transition from a parenting style focused on rules and obedience to a mentoring approach that encourages critical thinking. By guiding our kids rather than making decisions for them, we enable them to understand the consequences of their actions and develop essential life skills.

Allowing Room for Failure and Growth

One common challenge is our tendency to shield our children from failure. However, experiencing failure is a vital part of learning and personal growth. By allowing our kids to make their own choices and face the outcomes, we provide them with valuable opportunities for selfdiscovery and understanding. It's important to separate our ego from their failures and instead focus on guiding them toward making better choices that lead to success.

Nurturing a Healthy Relationship with Oneself

Recognizing the importance of selfcare and self-awareness is an integral aspect of developing life skills. By helping our children understand their relationship with themselves, we can teach them to prioritize their well-being and make choices that align with their values. From taking care of their physical environment to managing their time effectively, these small steps empower them to shape their own lives and create positive relationships with others.

Fostering Dialogue and Intentional Decision-Making

Effective communication and intentional decision-making are key components of life skills. By engaging in open conversations with our children, we can help them explore different perspectives, understand their own emotions, and consider

As parents, our ultimate goal is to raise independent, empowered individuals who can thrive in the world. By shifting from being authoritative parents to becoming mentors, we can guide our children to develop crucial life skills. Empowering them with the ability to make decisions, learn from failure, and nurture a healthy relationship with themselves will set them on a path of personal growth and success. Let's embrace this journey, gradually giving our kids the space and support they need to become confident, capable adults ready to take on the world.

EMPOWERING YOUR KIDS WITH LIFE SKILLS MUST KNOW

Family, Football, and the Dreaded Homework Routine

Getting back in the groove for fall means three things for our family: food (meal prepping on Sundays), football (enter our signature Sunday sauce), and finding our footing for a renewed homework routine.

Last year we reinvigorated our September by building a homework bar— which was designed to give the kids a work space by day, and by night was a station to organize all school things for the next day so that nothing got left behind. The bonus was that on weekends it morphed into an actual bar. A long and functional stretch of table, it’s perfect for displaying apps & snacks and serves as both a resting spot for a pumpkin beer and extra seating for any football fans who stop by for the game.

DIRECTIONS

1. Measure and Cut Butcher Block: Tailor the size of the butcher block to your preferences, trimming it down if necessary. Our selection featured a depth of 19", striking the right balance between space efficiency and roominess for accommodating books, laptops, and more. Consider rounding the edges with a router for added aesthetics.

2. Stain or Seal: Should you desire a different hue, apply wood stain to the butcher block. We opted to embrace the natural allure of the wood by sealing it with a clear water-based polyurethane.

3. Install L-Brackets: Secure L-brackets onto the wall at uniform intervals. Mind the spacing, ensuring enough room for chairs or bar stools. To ensure proper measurements, consider prepurchasing the seating items.

4. Attach Butcher Block: Fasten the butcher block onto the L-brackets with screws. For our 8-foot piece, we used four 12" brackets, each anchored to studs to support the weight.

5. Cork Board Placement: Choose cork boards that match the width of the chairs or stools they will hang in front of. Be mindful of hanging the boards at a height that will make them accessible to the kids.

6. Personalize Cork Boards: Enhance the cork boards' functionality with decorative pushpins and colorful tacks adorned with clips. These will hold important documents such as field trip notifications, upcoming test schedules, and physical forms.

7. Illuminate with Sconce Lighting: Proper lighting is mandatory for homework time. Instead of involving an electrician, we utilized remote-controlled batteryoperated puck lighting for ease and convenience.

8. Hang Wall Hooks: Under each station, fix wall hooks to serve as convenient hangers for backpacks. This strategic placement allows kids to have their school essentials at their fingertips for homework sessions and ensures an organized start to the following day.

SUPPLIES NEEDED:

• Butcher block counter (Home Depot)

• Wood stain (optional)

• Clear water-based polyurethane

• L-Brackets (with hardware)

• Cork boards

• Wall hooks

• Sconce lighting

The social aspect is unmatched, with technology facilitating easy coordination and connection among players. Long Island is excited to secure court time and join a growing network of pickleball enthusiasts.

Aspiring to be more than just a facility, the Pickleball Xpress brand aims to be synonymous with fun, community, and healthy competition; a gathering place for sports enthusiasts, fitness lovers, friends and community builders alike. Ahead of the Culinary Curve: Tula Kitchen’s Recipe for Success

WHEN TULA KITCHEN FIRST put down roots in Bay Shore almost eighteen years ago, no one could have foreseen that they would be paving the way for culinary diversity on the South Shore for decades to come – no one except owners Jackie Sharlup and Lina Rinaudo, and their lifelong chef Helvie Assaly.

Tula’s success is largely due to Jackie’s passion-turned-vision which began when she was quite young. An early pioneer of vegetarianism, Jackie adopted the lifestyle at age four, when she took her first trip to a local farm. Her natural way of living was a direct reflection of her mother. Leaning towards eastern philosophies of healing and health, her mother took vigilant care of her father who battled with cancer. This way of living, ingrained in Jackie early on, is what led her down the path to start Tula Kitchen – she wanted everyone to experience the healing power of food.

After filling countless notebooks with her ideas, Jackie eventually turned to Lina, her business partner, who helped transform her ideas into reality. Sharing a mutual vision, Jackie and Lina meticulously crafted the design elements, culinary details and inspirations from around the world that would eventually become Tula Kitchen. The painstaking detail, dedication, and heart & soul the duo put into each and every aspect of the restaurant is evident upon stepping inside. In essence, Tula is a mirror of the energy and passion the women infused into the space.

“We come from two very different perspectives, but always wind up with the same vision and same outcome,” explained Lina. Jackie brings with her a long history of art and culinary expertise, while Lina comes from a fashion and operational background. Balance is at the heart of everything they do. The women

are intrinsically involved in every aspect of the restaurant – from the menu to the paint colors. Merging their talents produced an elegant, oldworld-chic venue possessing a strong sense of community within its walls. Everything in Tula Kitchen is the product of a labor of love.

“I would love for everyone to learn how to become the best versions of themselves, and I can help foster this through Tula!” exclaimed Jackie. Their goal of creating a nontraditional space bursting with energy and filled with beauty is the result of a lifelong journey to inspire others. Jackie’s success in this endeavor is palpable – customers return time and again to not only enjoy the delicious culinary creations but to revel in the sense of well-being the space provides.

But the road to opening Tula was not easy. Jackie faced skepticism as she treaded an uncharted path – limited finances, no restaurant background, and a vision that was ahead of its time in championing a predominantly vegetarian realm. It was a gamble at the time. Unwavering, it was Jackie’s determined resolve that eventually turned her vision into a reality.

Today, the space that houses the original Tula Kitchen stands as a landmark the community knows and loves. The restaurant has evolved, adapting to changing times while remaining rooted in its values and original essence. “Tula Kitchen is always about reinventing and making sure we are still relevant,” Lina explained. From offering healthy and delicious dishes in a space with a hip vibe to the opening of their new takeaway juice bar, Tula Kitchen constantly shapes itself after the customers that frequent it, advancing with modern times. The welcoming space is known for its selection of vegetarian and vegan well-balanced fare, as well as seafood and poultry using only the highest quality natural ingredients. Dedicated to putting their customers first, all dishes are easily personalized to accommodate their guests’ needs.

“All of our hearts are in this,” said Jackie. “This isn’t just a restaurant, you feed your whole soul here.”

Representing Honesty, Integrity & Knowledge of your local market. dsanders@ericramsay.com

@david.p.sanders

A native of Islip, I grew up in Bayberry Point and Islip is still my hometown. I bring my love of south shore living to all my customers and clients. Being a local resident allows me to keep my finger on the pulse of our beautiful waterfront communities. More importantly, I bring my knowledge, honesty and professionalism for navigating today’s dynamic real estate market.

Enjoying 18 successful years in real estate stemmed from my strong marketing background as well as my passion for both modern and historic architecture, which our coastal communities have a balanced blend of. Having owned South Bay Water Taxi for over twenty years provided me with a broad social network and valuable knowledge of waterfront properties, including their navigational points. Taking my customers on a waterfront home tour by boat is one of the things I enjoy most.

For nearly two decades I have been involved in all aspects of real-estate, from commercial to residential properties. If you are considering purchasing or selling a property in our area, call me… I can help with your future plans.
