Ho podeu endevinar?

We’re told so many things before Year Abroad: How to choose the modules, where to find accommodation, or how to get our visa (sometimes) Rightly so, as these are all crucial to even getting to the country in the first place However, there’s one thing that always slips our minds How do you make friends once you get there? Making friends can be difficult anyway, but a different country with different customs, and occasionally a different language can compound it I too, had that problem I hope the following tips can help you make the most of your Year Abroad, as one thing I learnt while in Grenoble was that the people you meet make your Year Abroad!

This is a great way to kill two birds with one stone, as you’re able to practise your language skills while making friends at the same time! English is such a popular language for exchange, so you shouldn’t have any problems in that respect! A buddy system is a similar concept, which pairs you with a 3rd or 4th year student who does similar/the same subjects as you and has experience with the way the university works This can help you settle in and is a stepping stone to making friends with your other classmates My buddy recommended several great restaurants to me and was really helpful to me regarding the lesson formats in the faculty

Like UoB, most universities abroad have welcome weeks to help integrate students into university life. This is where a lot of my friends were made and friendship groups were formed, so I’d definitely recommend getting stuck in straight away before the semester starts! For example, at the university I went to (UGA, Université Grenoble Alpes) there were not only events organised by the uni themselves, but also by a student group One worry I had was that the clubs would be very much club/party orientated, but I found that this wasn’t the case The advantage of such events is that you’re able to find people with similar hobbies to have From hiking tours to international picnics, there was something for everyone, and there’ll definitely be something for you too!

What do I mean by this? Well, any groups associated with the uni or the city you’re staying in Note that these aren’t necessarily affiliated with your accommodation or uni, so be prepared to do some digging! I’d recommend posting on the group with your interests and the subject(s) you’re studying and see what happens! For example, I ended up in a group chat with some others who wanted to play football for the semester and was also in a group chat with other Erasmus students, some of whom I’m still great friends with now!

Tip 4, Go for it!

So this seems really simplistic, not even really a tip, but honestly it’s easier said than done You often have to plan around a budget, for example However, I would say going for it really helped me enjoy my Year Abroad experience to the full! Sometimes I had to bite the bullet and chat to people, and great friendships were formed because of it Some of the best experiences I had were just pushing the boat out a little Try stuff you’ve never done before, get to know people and try to get out of your comfort zone, because while one semester really does whizz by, you want it to whizz by with some great company!

UCU Strikes- what’s it all about?

With a new wave of UCU strikes beginning mid February and continuing into March, it is becoming more and more important that we ask ourselves as students: What’s happening?

According to the union le causes, that of pension cu have been separated, and to participate had to take So far, 37 institutions aro take action against the cu pension scheme These c the average retired worke statistic that is shocking to turnout of many supporte protect university staff Similarly, the four fights have gained great support as shown by 54 institutions’ vote to participate in protests to defend them

For the past four months, the UCU (University and College Union) has been organising strikes and walkouts, among other pr the new cuts that are pro academic staff This is in a improvements in issues in ‘four fights’: pay, workload discrimination against sta disability and/or ethnic an the sector

Since December last year we have been hearing about UCU’s strikes, seeing lecturers miss class, and having timetable disruptions because of it all But not many of us actually know that much about the strikes Who’s protesting what, and why?

this news is especially shocking in the current climate of things. Because, like all of us, our university lecturers and tutors have spent the past few years in uncertainty, facing challenge after challenge due to the pandemic and the lockdowns. However, through it all they have always tried to keep their students reassured and help us to the best of their ability. Therefore, it is beyond unfair to them that the first steps we start taking out of the pandemic may be in a direction that threatens their livelihood and ignores their need for a healthier professional environment.

Despite the great support and engagement that these strikes have gained over the past months, and the awareness they have raised among other faculty members and university students, action seems to be unorganised and inefficient Many argue that such diluted means of protest as those currently in place are unlikely to succeed in bringing about change

This dilution of action prevents there being enough disruption to university schedules for bosses to start negotiations that may satisfy higher education workers. This is especially clear when compared to similar strikes that took place in 2018 and 2019/20 when strike action was much heavier and teachers missed multiple days of classes a week for a number of weeks. However, it is important to note that while the current situation may not seem like it is pushing enough for change, it would be very hard for faculty members to even maintain their current participation levels, let alone push for more intense confrontational action due to the pay cuts that they are made to face by their bosses. Some universities have threatened to cut the pay of lecturers participating in walkouts by 50% for any lectures left untaught or materials that are left uncirculated. This has caused many strikers to rethink their participation due to financial strains. Therefore, some UCU members are currently trying to get around these threats through moving classes online, in order to avoid the devastating impact those cuts may have on their wages, and to avoid harming students’ education too much while protesting to protect their own Ultimately, rights.

Like most of us Brits, I feel very connected to the unique culture and lifestyle associated with my region. The UK’s South West is a hilly, sparsely populated, scruffy place Aside from its good climate (compared to the rest of the UK), it is easy to think that it is completely dead To be fair, to those from large cities, it probably is completely dead.

In all seriousness though, while there are several peculiar similarities between these two Atlantic facing cities, these similarities pale into insignificance when compared to the huge wealth of cultural differences between the two places In fact, there are so many differences, I am tempted to write another article about them!

Cultural differences between south-west Spain and south-west UK

Secondly, Gaditanos and South Westerners alike speak with famously strange accents Of course, in the UK, this is not a great achievement, as each region has its own unique dialect However, in Spain, the Andalusian accent is famously difficult to understand for a non native speaker During my first few months living here, though I could understand the Spanish on TV or that used by my lecturers, whenever I was spoken to in a shop or on the street, I would have to admit defeat and ask them to repeat what they had said

Culture

Firstly, both cities are coastal, and much of their culture, history, and industry is based around this geographical feature. In the past, both cities have served as important locations for trading Cádiz, being right on the coast, boasts a beautiful seaport, with a location so ideal it connects Europe to Africa and even the Americas On the other hand, Exeter, being 10 miles inland, is connected to the sea by the UK’s oldest canal

Nowadays, interestingly, both waterways are used for tourism Huge cruise ships make port in Cádiz all year round, allowing people from all over the world to enjoy the city. Meanwhile, Exeter’s disused canal has become a hotspot for summer water sports such as kayaking, rowing, and even stand up paddle boarding!

But I love my region and its way of life The Southwest is statistically the happiest and healthiest region of the UK We are more active, but also more laid back. We are lucky that we can go to the beach after work, we have the best chips (in my opinion), and lots of surf And seeing as the South West is the destination of over a quarter of domestic tourism in the UK, it is clear that it is not just us who love our strange, isolated peninsular

Finally, I have noticed the two regions share a fondness of eating anything that swims. Of course, this is natural For both Cádiz, and the coastal South West, seafood is still the regional cuisine, and fishing is still an important industry. One could, and should, argue that this does not count as a similarity because the food in Cádiz is infinitely better than the food in South Devon But to those people, I suggest you try the famous battered chips at Krispies, Exmouth, and then make up your mind.

In September I arrived in Cádiz, a tiny island city in the south west of Spain, with the same population as Exeter, my home city. I quickly learnt that los ‘Gaditanos’ (people from Cádiz) share this sense of regional pride It is easy to see why, as Cádiz is an extremely beautiful city. But funnily enough, throughout my stay here, I have noticed several little similarities between Cádiz and Exeter

Food and drink

I’ll begin by saying that I don’t want to give too much away, but in the same breath, there’s only so much that I can tell you. In November, I took full advantage of the plethora of restaurants that there are in the UK and visited DANS LE NOIR ?, a restaurant nestled away on St Johns Street, Clerkenwell district (London). I wish I had a more profound reason for wanting to go to this restaurant but the true inspiration for this visit came from About Time, a film about true love, time-travel and living life everyday while appreciating every second of its extraordinary, ordinary happenings. In the film, the protagonist meets the love of his life in DANS LE NOIR? and fully appreciates the companionship of a stranger because all that they can do is eat and appreciate each other’s company. My experience was slightly different, as I knew my dining partner rather well and for us, it was far more about the food. The true concept of this restaurant, whose name translates to (Dining) in the Dark?, is to prove that a culinary experience should be more than what you can put on Instagram. (Although, if you’d like a great restaurant review page, IG: @restraurantreeviews might be the one for you). The experience is guided completely by a blind or partially sighted staff into a restaurant in which you cannot see a thing. It is difficult to express to a fully sighted person how surreal it can be to observe absolutely nothing, but it is an incredible bonding experience between yourself and the company you choose for the night, but it also allows “positive empathy that breaks our preconceived ideas of disability,” and an appreciation for your remaining senses.

DANS LE NOIR ?

First, we had to put our complete trust in the staff as we stashed away phones, jewellery and anything that may reflect any light which would spoil the darkness Once you have been seated, they ask you to pour yourself some water with the instruction: “put your finger in the glass and stop when it gets wet,” we had a good giggle at that, and we were glad that we had hand sanitised heavily before entry! My partner and I chose the ‘red’ (meat) menu and the ‘blue’ (fish) menu respectively and the food was incredible. I won’t go into the food itself in too much detail as I feel that the experience of having simply no clue is what makes it so magical, yet I’m not sure that I will ever experience seasoning in the same way again. For me, everything seemed a bit saltier, and it is safe to say that I am less heavy handed with soy sauce now, but for my partner, he was able to try foods without prejudice and appreciate the plate that he was served. We managed to share food by ‘meeting’ at the top of the water jug and I hate to say it, but I think his meal was better than mine One spoiler that I will give is that purple potatoes are incredible! Although this experience is a little more on the expensive side, the quality of food is impeccable, and it is an experience that I don’t think can be replicated

Two of my favourite cities I have been to are Madrid and Berlin. As historical centres there is always something to fill your time, something to do, learn and see The art museums, such as The Prado in Madrid, and the historical sites, like the Reichstag building in Berlin are must see locations. The list of possibilities in these cities is endless and you can always find a free city tour to tag along with and learn something new Understandably, though, not everyone is keen on the claustrophobic conditions of exploring a big city in peak season which can also mean you might not get to see all you want to If you haven't been able to travel as freely as desired since 2020, a little break is long overdue, as we have all been waiting to be able to get to the cities we love. However, I think it’s fair to say we also all deserve a beach getaway! As someone who loves both, it can be hard deciding where I would rather go Luckily, there's a little bit for everyone everywhere; whether you want to explore or just relax Happy travelling!

Travel

As Covid travel restrictions are slowly loosening everywhere, the prospect of a 2022 summer holiday is much greater than it has been these past few years However, there is always the question of whether to opt for a cultural city trip or a relaxing holiday by the beach There are few places that can offer tranquil beaches alongside a bustling city, and if you're someone like me who likes both, it can be hard to decide where is best I have been lucky enough to experience both incredible cultural centres of the world, as well as white beaches and blue seas. The Greek Island of Lefkas in the Ionian Sea is the perfect place to recharge your batteries, dip into the warm ocean and catch some sun You can avoid the hectic cities with a non stop itinerary and instead focus on relaxing or getting a tan. Unlike more popular islands like Santorini or Corfu, Lefkas is relatively untouched when it comes to tourism It means there’s not much to do apart from relax but it gives you the opportunity to really experience the culture authentically and try traditional foods like moussaka or gyros made in a family run taverna Lefkas is not as well known as some of the other islands, but it does offer the same clear seas and sandy beaches with a promise of good weather. You can also steer clear of feeling like cattle as you make your way through busy cities and sunbathe on the beach

However, beach destinations, Lefkas included, are generally very isolated and there is not as much to explore as big cities

Beaches or bustle?
