PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

As we travel in the journey of our life here on earth, we constantly experience challenges, problems and many more We want to be happy always, but most of the time this is interrupted by somethings we do not expect and contrary to what we want The very concrete example is this COVID-19 phenomena For more or less than two years we were on lockdown and isolated to one another It really took us all by surprise We never thought that we would have such an experience in our lifetime. But even though we saw the gravity and impact it caused in our daily living, we should also accept the fact that it brought us many positive aspects and effects in all of us. We learned so much from it. With God’s grace we were able to overcomethischallenge

This season of Christmas reminds us that God is faithful to His promise. He sent his only Son through a Virgin named Mary to fulfill his promise of redemption This child that is to be born by Mary is Emmanuel, God is with us! So, whatever we have in life, trust in God because he never ceases to love andcareforus

During the Christmas season, numerous decorations such as Christmas trees, lights, reindeers, and snowmen can be seen everywhere. But one notable character, Santa Claus, known by many names, St. Nick, Kris Kringle, and Pelznickel, is always present during the holiday season. However, throughout generations, people have questioned the existence of this significant figure.

Santa Claus is primarily recognized as the cheerful man in red who distributes gifts to good children on Christmas Eve. Others say that Santa Claus is Saint Nicholas, who is recognized as the defender of children due to his reputation for generosity and good deeds. However, in our generation, the real Santa Clauses consistently show generosity and compassion to those around them.

In a world filled with negativity, these Santas bring light and positivity to their surroundings. Some demonstrate generosity through donations, gifts to the needy, and assistance to the elderly. These people may not dress as Santa Claus, but their actions reflect his.

Moreover, the Catholic Businessmen Association of the Philippines, a group of over 3,000 business owners, decided on November 8 to set a maximum price for items so as not to take advantage of the Christmas season ' s increased demand. This helps Filipinos minimize their budget, especially when the country is experiencing a high inflation rate.

Furthermore, the e-commerce platform's Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, Shopee Bayanihan, aids local communities by collaborating with 21 groups that assist underprivileged children to fulfill their diverse needs across the country this holiday season. Their mission is to help eliminate child poverty, assist in ensuring equal access to education, campaign for the protection of children's health, and help in defending children's rights.

Jordan Howard, who lives in Kentucky, continues a 42-year tradition of dressing up as Mountain Santa and delivering gifts to the poor children of Kentucky's Cumberland Mountains communities. The tradition started with his father, Mike, and Jordan is following in his dad's footsteps. Every year, Mike Howard would collect Christmas presents and bring them to families who might not get any gifts.

Thus, we may not be able to determine the real Santa Claus, but those who demonstrate goodwill and kindness can be called such. We reflect on his actions through simple deeds such as showing hope, positivity, and service to others. By doing so, we aim to accomplish Santa Claus' goal of loving and caring for others.

TERESIANS BATTLE TERESIANS BATTLE

in Christmas Show Choir Contest

After two years of virtual Christmas celebration, Teresians clustered as one of this year's most anticipated activity, the STC Show Choir Competition with the theme "Teresian Christmas – Reconnected," held on December 9.

Each participating section was tasked to enact any Christmas song as a "show choir," a mixture of choral singing and choreographed dance, with a minimum duration of 3 minutes and a maximum of 5. The contestants were divided by their perspective grade levels to compete for the gold, silver, and bronze: primary level, intermediate level, grades 7-8, 9–10, and 11–12 The winners were then invited to take part and perform once more in the program held on December 14.

All presentations were evaluated by the same panel of judges, starring Mr Aurelio D Manalo Jr , Mrs Joan Kristel M Adame, and former choir member, Mr. Danilo Jose Robles. In between performances for the primary level, Diana Dimalibot of 10 - St. Matthew entertained the crowd with her cover of the Christmas song "Last Christmas " Meanwhile, the Magboo twins of 8 - St. Jerome, Julienn, and Jyuann delighted both intermediate and senior high school students with their intermission number. Javeriel Robles of 12 - St. Anselm of Canterbury and Alexa Contreras of 12 - St Basil the Great, on the other hand, were the performers

during the program for grades 7 and 8. Lastly, with his cover of the hit song, "Paraluman," Andrei Cadevida of 12 - St. Anselm of Canterbury fulfilled the program for grades 9 and 10.

To prepare for the event, from November 28 to December 7, Teresians observed a shortened period for all the subjects to utilize the time left in the afternoon as their practice. All showed immense effort alongside each section's creative collaborations, from the performance to their costumes.

Giving way and respect to the safety protocols, all competitions were held separately to avoid crowded areas that may lead to the absence of physical and social distancing

The Department of Education's (DepED) 's Order No. 49, a set of rules and policies released that promote a sense of professionalism while educating, is only a restatement of the Code of Conduct for Filipino civilians, including teachers, DepEd Spokesperson Atty. Michael Poa remarked.

In a press conference held in November, Poa stated that the DepEd Order seeks to depoliticize and promote professionalism within the ranks "Sa aming pananaw, there is no infringement of any basic rights such as freedom of expression, freedom of speech, specifically with telling them not to go to politicians para po maiparating 'yung kanilang concerns," he added

FARE INCREASE IN BAUAN STRIKES ON COMMUTERS

The most recent Transportation Code in the City of Bauan, released by the Bauan Municipal Government, significantly impacted many commuters, particularly students

According to the Bauan Municipal Facebook page, the ordinance will be Ordinance No 22-08-0326, which went into effect on November 1, 2022.

In addition, the Transportation Code caused several students to travel long distances to access school, which may increase their expenses or limit

DO 49 IS JUST A REMINDER OF PROFESSIONALISM AND ITS RULES - DEPED

Furthermore, DO 49 states that employees

should refrain from requesting or obtaining third-party support or endorsement in the hiring, transfer, promotion, removal, or any other personnel movement, as well as raising issues and concerns about primary education through formal and appropriate DepEd channels, either directly to the Office of the Secretary or through the concerned Assistant Secretary or Undersecretary However, it brought up many concerns among multiple groups, including House Deputy Minority Leader France Castro of the ACT party list, who said that it was "tantamount to violating the freedom of speech of teachers and school personnel " Meanwhile, the Republic Act 6713/Code of Conduct Ethical Standards for Public Officials and Employees and the Republic Act

7836/ The Philippine Teachers Professionalization Act of 1994 are set up to help teachers understand how to conduct themselves.

According to Poa, using social media for communicating is allowed and isn't considered "outside of the school setting" just as long as school-related matters are being discussed

"There has to be a line between the teacher and the learner, but we're not discouraging the use of social media for classroom instruction, and that's why the word or phrase 'outside the school setting' must be emphasized," he added

Poa pointed out that DepEd is simply "reminding" teachers not to "cross the line" or have "biases" between their students. He further added that there is no need for teachers to unfollow/unfriend their students just yet

their availability for other activities.

Under this ordinance, passengers who wish to ride the tricycle alone must pay three times the minimum fare This is unfortunate because tricycles have suddenly become expensive, and passengers must wait to avoid paying three times the price. Moreover, people traveling in a group must also pay three times the minimum fare if they cannot occupy all empty seats in the tricycle Furthermore, netizens strongly objected to the law that the municipality abolished Now that the country's inflation rate is rising, everything is becoming more expensive, including the fare As such, the Bauan municipality has decided to limit the fare that tricycle drivers can charge their passengers

The said order also aided some people, such as those who are impatient and do not want to wait, but some people did not find this order helpful, particularly students They were affected by the increase in the fare, making it hard for them daily

SWEET TALK SWEET TALK

"Imported" usually rings a bell among Filipinos who perceive it as trivial and only has little impact on daily life. But imagine if a classic peso treat suddenly became pricier and tasted different from what people used to like. Surely, it couldn't get any worse. This is only one of the lasting effects of the sugar import plan. To implement this over time may result in ripple effects in several aspects, thus the government's decision to stop sugar imports for the remainder of this crop year is reasonable.

After a shortage of refined sugar hit the market in July, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. revealed plans to import 150,000 metric tons of it if supplies ran shorter by October Longterm implementation of this would make it more challenging to achieve its initial goals of "ensuring" domestic supply and "managing" sugar prices

While domestic consumers and sugar-based industries can benefit from prolonged sugar imports, it poses a risk to local farmers Philippines' president of the Chamber of Agriculture and Food Inc. (PCAFI), Danilo Fausto, has warned that allowing sugar imports into the market will put local sugar producers at a disadvantage.

As local farmers mainly produce the Philippines's exported sugar, an excess of imported sugar could lead to a decrease in exports from local producers, expecting more job losses in the country. When reaping the benefits of prolonged sugar imports, importing includes receiving and paying for the goods, either with its currency or loan, which usually causes more outflows from the domestic country Due to the additional expense of importing the product, sugar may become more expensive What other way is there for this to stabilize market prices when the cost is passed along to local consumers and food manufacturers in the form of higher prices?

This can also increase the risk of devaluing the country's currency. This means it will take more of the local currency to purchase the same foreign currency. If the money continues to weaken, this can exacerbate existing economic issues such as inflation

Having a long history of producing sugar, which has been a major commodity for export in the Philippines since the 19th century, imported from foreign countries can be seen as an insult to the country and its economy This may suggest that the domestic country is not investing enough in its economy and is resource-poor.

Although it partially satiated domestic sugar demand, consumers in the Philippines could not count on a constant supply The Bureau of Customs allegedly seized a sugar consignment worth P228 million. However, the consignee, Manuel Macainag Jr of Bee Crescent Blending Corp , denied this, saying that the order was based on a hunch by the same people responsible for the Subic blunder

In this case, connections with foreign countries do not matter the most Instead, the government should prioritize joining the Department of Trade and Industry with the Department of Agriculture to create a better monitoring system to help reduce inflation and stabilize sugar production. Limiting imports and balancing prices and supplies would help protect the interests of domestic sugar producers and consumers and support the domestic sugar industry

Extracurricular Relapse

Fulfilling much of the competency list of the K-12 curriculum and making up for lost learning time may result in more intensive and long hours of academic study The government should thus think about how such a decision can affect students' wellbeing and should figure out how to balance academic demands with opportunities for students to participate in activities that will promote mental and emotional well-being.

Learning transcends the confines of a classroom, and keeping students in it may hinder their ability to thrive and will not fully benefit their academic performance. The solution to such learning issues is not to ban extracurricular activities.

According to Department of Education (DepEd) Order No 34, Series of 2022, extracurricular activities are banned for the school year 2022–2023 in order to close any learning gaps caused by the pandemic Teachers are urged to prioritize academics in order to make up for classes missed or insufficiently discussed due to the restrictions of distance or blended learning. Banning extracurricular activities and placing all of the emphasis on academics, however, may lead to students' burnout and mental health problems.

In addition, the Alliance of Concerned Teachers (ACT) pointed out that the restriction could lead to academic stress among students who need a place to exhibit their talents outside the classroom freely Extracurricular activities can give some students a sense of purpose and accomplishment and can also be a significant outlet for their creativity and self-expression.

By prohibiting these activities, students may even feel less motivated and engaged in their academic pursuits, especially now that they can once again be proud of their exceptional talents after being unable to do so due to the previous online or modular classes.

Not only those, but the extracurricular activities can also contribute to learners' holistic development in ways that formal academic work might not be able to. Studies have shown that students who engage in extracurricular activities are more likely to have a well-rounded education and to be more successful in their academic and professional endeavors. If not carried out, students may miss out on these worthwhile chances and struggle to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting.

Although the order was intended to promote academics and make up for classes missed due to distance learning or blended learning restrictions, the decision to ban extracurricular activities may have unintended consequences for students particularly after being confined at home for an extended period of time due to the pandemic,

and especially to some students who find participating in extracurricular activities as a much-needed mental break from the pressure of schoolwork

While the DepEd is still working on the guidelines for its ban on extracurricular activities, it would be wise to focus on the much more significant issues haunting the country's educational system: classroom shortages, alleged corruption behind overpriced but outdated laptops for teachers, toxic workloads, low salaries, and a lack of teaching personnel These are certainly more significant and pressing issues, the solution that will surely improve Filipino students' academic performance far more than prohibiting extracurricular activities

Everyone has probably vibed along to Gene Autry’s 1949 hit, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, for its catchy beat that made it a Christmas carol staple over the years. ehind the jolly lyrics and holiday spirit, it gives a more profound message that often goes missing. There is more to Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer than just a Christmas carol. Rudolph faced discrimination because of his red nose. Applying the reindeer’s situation to reality, it can be said that discrimination is faced by many as well. Race and ethnicity, along with gender and disability, are common forms of discrimination in many countries today.

EMBRACE, Not Discriminate

Discrimination at work is a fairly typical occurrence today. Notably, in 2018, employees with HIV suffered from wrongful termination and forced resignation. Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) adolescents experience bullying and abuse while they attend school. Meanwhile, during this pandemic, persons with disability (PWD) cannot adapt to sudden changes and have to ask for fair treatment and inclusion.

BWhile some people would accept such treatment and move on with their lives, it only takes one person to stand against inequality and ignite a powerful movement, just as it only takes one flame to start a fire in this country’s barren cold. Both leaders and citizens have the power to improve society and make it more equitable, taking Santa Claus’ acceptance of Rudolph’s difference as an example. God uniquely created everyone, and everyone has a particular purpose Rudolph didn’t let his uniqueness prevent him from carrying out his purpose. No matter how many laws are implemented, discrimination still occurs. Experts say that small prejudices which are not that obvious in everyday lives tend to happen more than significant discrimination in society.

Being different is not so bad after all.

Tis the Season to be Givers

Giving Giving

Christmas is nearing, and everyone's excited! Who wouldn't be? It is the season of giving! There's no doubt that people have been thinking about what gifts to give to their loved ones for weeks, as they want them to be more memorable and significant than in the past years. But, others are also considering the affordability of gifts or if they can be the ones to make the gifts themselves. For those needing ideas on what to give to their loved ones, here are some thoughtful, affordable, handmade gifts to make!

Cookies

Cookies are usually given by a person when they want to give something to their loved ones. It is easy to make and comes in many shapes and forms, so it is convenient to design it according to what they want it to look like as a present For example, this coming Christmas, the cookies they will bake can be shaped like a Christmas Tree, gifts, bells, or any related symbol to the said holiday. Cookies would fill not just the recipients' stomachs but also their hearts with happiness.

Annotated Books

This Christmas, people would have the time to read books to pass their time while waiting for the celebration, and that's it would be a great time to give people annotated books It may be a tad uncommon, but it is a great way to express one's thoughts and feelings about a book, especially if the person receiving it loves the book that will be annotated. Additionally, this shows how much a person values their loved one's interests.

Crocheted Clothing

In the season when coldness is terribly felt, a person will need clothing that would warm their body. Giving crocheted clothing would be the answer to such a problem! This gift can make people feel exceptional because someone sewed effortful and detailed patterns that would make the clothing fit their liking.

Plants

"Plantitas" or "Plantitos" are the nicknames often called to people who love to take care of plants, especially adults. A plant is a good idea for a gift, for it may symbolize steadiness and patience. Thus, people who love plants can embody those traits in that kind of activity and other aspects of their life The process of a blooming seedling can be compared to how Christians are just as willing to wait for the coming of Jesus Christ this Christmas as they are to wait for a seed to grow into a beautiful plant.

Journal

People cannot be with the people they care for all the time, especially on special holidays like Christmas. That is why they want them to feel that they still can talk and vent to them. Through writing their thoughts and messages in the given journal, they can say all the things that are piling up on their mind, especially if it's something that they would say to the one who gave the journal This can also keep records of happy and eventful memories like celebrating Christmas.

Handwritten Letters

Not all people may say it out loud, but everyone needs words of affirmation from others to reassure them Through letters, a person's feelings can be conveyed to their loved ones if they are not vocal in person. It can be filled with appreciation, gratitude, motivation, or loving words to express one's love. Thus, the Christmas season is not about how great the gifts are but how sincere the feelings are concealed in the gifts being given.

A Christmas

Dear Diary,

It’s been so long since I wrote about Aunt Francisca. The last time I wrote about her was three weeks ago when she was planning to go home for Christmas. It’s finally happening! She’s coming home in a few days, and I can’t express how thrilled I am As I write, the amount of serotonin and adrenaline rushing through my body is exhilarating She’s like a mom to me, for she treats me as if I was her own

Ever since the pandemic happened, she hasn’t been able to go home during Christmas or New Year, and it always saddens me how another important holiday would pass without her But I can only imagine how she feels, having to spend her ordinary days and holidays far away from her family. She always tells me she can’t retire as I’m still in Senior High School. Even now, it’s clear that she has always had and still has such big dreams for me. I distinctly remember several moments when we were talking about future careers. Somehow, we always found ourselves talking about the path toward medicine. It’s always been a dream of mine to become a doctor, and it makes me joyous to have my aunt’s support. As a nurse herself, she always tells me to enjoy the ride of learning and growing each day I want to make her proud and feel that her efforts were not in vain

Some people are excited to have a family member come home because of the number of clothes, perfume, chocolates, and presents that they’d be able to receive What matters the most is that you make them feel loved, not only because they give you what you want, but because they’re family OFWs deserve the title ‘modern heroes’ for the pain, longing, and loneliness they are willing to endure to ensure the well-being of their loved ones. It takes a lot of courage to leave your country and face a new one full of uncertainties.

I admire my aunt’s bravery so much. I still remember when she bought me a lot of handbags as if I had more than two arms. She always surprises me with the number of things she gets for me without asking for anything in return All she says is, “Basta gagalingan mag-aral ha, Dra.” Butterflies fill my stomach whenever she calls me “Dra.” It feels good to know that someone sees and believes in my ability Never has she failed to tell me that she supports and loves me no matter what.

to Remember

Dec, 04, 2022

I’m thrilled to see her again, hug her, tell her I missed her in person, and make her feel undeniably unique I can’t count on my hands how many times I almost died laughing during our previous sessions of ‘chikas’ and ‘kwentuhan,’ and I can’t wait to have these moments happen again. I truly missed her presence. I get so shy to tell her I love her in person, but I have no problem letting her know through chat. She might never see this letter, but if by an off-chance she did, and she reached this part of my diary entry, I would like to say; Hi, Mame, I love you wholeheartedly, and I appreciate everything that you have done and plan to do for me and all of us I will ensure that I get that ‘MD’ in front of my name someday to make you proud!

Trending: A Musktake?

Beginning on April 14, 2022, and concluding on October 27, 2022, Elon Musk s acquisition of Twitter is a big move in the technology industry With his ideas to improve the platform will this move benefit the social media company? Or is this the start of Twitter s downfall?

Business mogul, Elon Musk first used the Twitter platform in June 2010 As his wealth grew he gained around 80 million followers by April 2022 Musk started purchasing stock on January 31, 2022 And by April 4 he acquired 92 percent of the company s shares This made him the company s largest shareholder A day after the announcement, Twitter’s board of directors invited Musk to join which Musk accepted

However, on April 11, after posting several tweets criticizing the company Musk decided not to join the board, instead opting to make an offer to take the company private This means the businessman intends to make it so that the company s stock is shared privately

On April 14 2022 Musk offered to purchase Twitter for $43 billion The company ’ s board of directors said they would review the proposal carefully

After nearly six months Elon Musk officially acquired Twitter October 28 2022 is the date when Elon Musk completed the deal for the acquisition of Twitter Musk has ambitious proposals for the improvement of Twitter He promises to turn the platform s algorithm into an open source Allowing users to view Twitter s proprietary software will help instill trust and encourage transparency among users

Moreover plans to make the content moderation policies more forgiving are also in the works, though Musk assures that Twitter

Voluntarily Safe?: A Facemask Paradox

As mandated in the Executive Order No 7, signed by President Bongbong Marcos on October 28, wearing a facemask in the country is no longer mandatory even though approximately 113 million Filipinos are still at risk of contracting the COVID-19 disease Is this a good call?

It s been almost three years since we ve been under the challenge of the Covid-19 Pandemic Three years since everyone was asked to follow various health protocols to avoid the increase of infected individuals Along with frequent washing of hands and social distancing wearing face masks is one of the health protocols implemented to help prevent the spread of Covid-19

According to the Executive Order President Ferdinand Bongbong Marcos Jr mentioned that neighboring countries in Southeast Asia and various governments around the world had eased mask mandates "without

won t turn into a free-for-all hellscape In an open letter to Twitter, Musk states that the platform must be welcoming and warm to users

Under Musk’s leadership Twitter could become a safer space for certain minorities Namely women members of the LGBTQ+ community, and people of color

Even with these primarily positive changes, Elon Musk s bid to purchase twitter could bring adverse effects to both the billionaire and the general public Some experts say Musk’s vision of free speech for the platform could harm users

With Musk aiming to reduce Twitter s content moderation, an increase in hate speech is possible This can lead to real-life violence, racism, and discrimination

This is not the only problem that Musk’s obsession with Twitter unfolds

According to Bill George, a senior fellow at Harvard Business school and former CEO of Medtronic, the acquisition of Twitter could become a distraction for Musk

“Twitter is a distraction that could keep [Musk] from what’s important And it could do society more harm than good” George states

George adds that Musk s work at Tesla and SpaceX has been incredible and that adding Twitter to his responsibilities could shift the “greatest inventor of our era ’ s ” focus

This affects the people as well The several inventions at Tesla and SpaceX benefit the public very heavily Should Elon Musk put too much time into improving Twitter, it could prevent him from improving his older creations and inventing new machines

I would like to see him get back to inventing things and focusing on that,” George says “He’s made a huge difference in society with the companies he manages now and that’s where he should apply his gift of inventing

a significant increase in the number of registered Covid-19 cases " He added that as of October 26, 73 5 million Filipinos had been fully vaccinated with 20 5 million receiving booster doses

Although the mask is mandatory to be voluntary, it is up to the people to decide what's best for their health They can choose either to get vaccinated or wear a mask But, it's not that simple The immunization control in the country has been perplexed by recent developments: such as how symptomatic people can choose not to wear a mask indoors and outdoors Although they are still encouraged to wear protective gear, the cacophony of coughing and sneezing can be unaccustomed to us

Another development is the lack of booster shots in the country Dr Rontgene Solante, a vaccine expert,

stated that Filipinos do not fear the virus since the mortality rate has reduced while the 1st and 2nd doses are in effect Another development is the lack of booster shots in the country Dr Rontgene Solante, a vaccine expert, stated that Filipinos do not fear the virus since the mortality rate has reduced while the 1st and 2nd doses ar But like the old saying, " is better than cure " We n when the virus will strike a So wouldn't it be bette be still cautious of our surroundings to secure ou health and safety and thos around us?

Still in a fight or flight battle with COVID-19, presented with impossible situations and with sma winning, COVID-19 mig going

Doomscrolling

The pandemic changed a lot of people, both physically and mentally Due to this, many people have been attached to their gadgets, especially children Researchers say that the average screen time of a teenager since the pandemic was 7 7 hours a day, compared to before the pandemic, which was only 3 7 hours But how much does this affect them?

Aside from the online classes students take, the children are heavily interested in gaming, social media, texting, calling, and surfing the internet

Because of this, the children's mental health became poorer, leading to greater stress levels How?

Some teenagers experience cyberbullying in social media and gaming, which affects the person ' s brain and might lead to self-harm, social withdrawal, or worse, suicidal thoughts and actions

According to Dr Jason Nagata, assistant professor of pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco, teenagers with more screen time suffer from problems like depression and anxiety

Despite this, people say their stress reliever during the pandemic was social media and the different videos they encountered But does this do any good for their health?

Aside from the enjoyment gadgets give the overuse of electronic devices negatively affects aspects of our lives Sleep is one of them Due to the addiction, many teenagers have the impulse to always check their social media and stay updated, leading to sleeping disorders The negative impact of sleep affects the mental well-being of a person

Another one is loss of focus Without this, there is also no time management Because of gadgets,

away, as said by Dr Takeshi Kasai, a world director for the World Health Organization (WHO) However, we can still prevent it by simply wearing a mask and observing our hygiene As Filipino citizens, it is our duty and responsibility to protect our fellowmen

at all costs

many students forget about their examinations, assignments, and academics

And the most important one is the quality time spent with family and friends The loss of quality time between those two things will greatly impact someone ’ s life and might lead to depression

Dr Nagata predicted that this overuse wouldn’t go away anytime soon since the ongoing pandemic The only thing that he suggested was setting screen-time limits He also said to stop using devices before bed, which only leads to a lack of sleep

Since social activities are slowly going back to in-person, the use of devices by the students might decrease and become normal again To set a good example for their children, parents should limit their use during meals and family get-togethers
