The ultimate in styling and side protection.

Cleverly folded triangulated steel eliminates the need for tree bars. Punched and swagged holes add to the appearance and reduces unnecessary weight.

No mention of Camel as Land Rover launches Defender Trophy Edition

LAND ROVER HAS LAUNCHED THE TROPHY EDITION – A DEFENDER 110 INSPIRED BY THE GREAT DAYS OF THE CAMEL TROPHY. The vehicle comes with ‘a distinctive expedition‑ ready specification’ including 20” alloys, all‑terrain tyres, wheelarch protectors, a front undershield and a rear scuff plate. Next stop the Gobi Desert, right enough.

The theme for the above is black, or almost black. The alloys and arches are in gloss, the front guard is just black. the rear scuff plate is ‘dark’ and the tyres are, well, not whitewalls. If you feel tempted to say that they might as well be, for all the use a 20” fitment

is going to be on a proper expedition, then, well, boo. They launched it at the Festival of Speed, don’t you know. Talk like that is Not Goodwood.

The 110 is available in a choice of Deep Sandglow Yellow or Kes‑ wick Green. The former is ‘a modern interpretation of a colour synonymous with Defenders used on international Trophy‑style events’. Just suck in the smoke and say Camel, for God’s sake.

Keswick Green, meanwhile, ‘cele‑ brates rural exploration in Defender’s UK homeland.’ Land Rover has always been outspoken in its support of green laning and stood shoulder to shoulder with owners of its vehicles against

rights of way closures, after all, so this is very much in keeping. In each case, you get yet more gloss black on the bonnet, lower body sides, brake cali‑ pers and rear recovery eyes, and there are Trophy graphics on the bonnet, rear and C‑pillars

Inside, black Windsor leather seats hark firmly back to the days of the Camel, as do Trophy branded illumi‑ nated tread plates and end caps on the dash – which in turn matches the body colour of the vehicle itself.

If this isn’t enough to get you safely from one end of the Canning Stock Route to the other, another £4995 adds the Trophy Edition Accessory Pack. This gives you an Expedition Roof Rack, Deployable Ladder (in black, natch), Side‑Mounted Gear Carrier (gloss black this time), mud flaps and finally a raised air intake. Interestingly, Land Rover says the latter is for dust filtration, not wading protection.

The 110 Trophy Edition is available with a choice of plug in hybrid petrol or D350 diesel engines. List prices are £82,990 and £84,815 respectively – but with OTR costs and the Trophy Edition Accessory Pack included (and you’d feel naked without it), you’ll spend from £89,810 to put it on your drive.

TO

(see previous pages), Land Rover has devised a new adventure competition open to participants from more than 50 nations around the world. Inspired by previous events like the Camel and G4 Challenge, the Defender Trophy will culminate in a global final to be held in Africa during 2026 – with the winners getting an opportunity to undertake a unique mission with Defender conser‑ vation partner Tusk.

The event will take place over three rounds of training and competition. Local selections will begin this summer, before national finals next spring

determine who will make it to the final – itself hosted by Tusk, a charity which since 1990 has been working to protect Africa’s biodiversity, critical habitats and endangered species, promote harmony between humans and wildlife and educate people in the importance of conservation.

Needless to say, the new Defender 110 Trophy Edition will feature large in the event, which will be available to watch online for a worldwide audience. Each stage will include a variety of challenges in the fields of off‑road driving and navigation, ingenuity and innovation, and physical strength and coordination, all with the accent very

much on teamwork. ‘Only those who embrace the impossible, with a passion for global conservation, need apply,’ says Land Rover. ‘Epic Adventure, Greater Purpose.’

Up for it? You’ll need to be resident in a participating country, be over 23 years of age, be able to swim at least 50 metres, be eligible to drive and travel internationally and speak fluent English. ‘An unstoppable spirit is essential,’ adds Land Rover… oh yes, and you need to ‘embody the values of the original British adventure brand.’ Full information on how to be part of it can be found be visiting landrover.com/ defender‑trophy.

Octa Black dresses ultimate Defender with yet bolder styling

YOU MIGHT HAVE THOUGHT THE OCTA WAS ALREADY THE ULTIMATE VERSION OF THE DEFENDER. But now here’s the Octa Black, ‘combining extreme all‑terrain performance with an even bolder appearance.’

Powered by the familiar 635bhp twin‑turbo V8 engine, like every Octa this comes with 6D Dynamics suspen‑ sion and a special Octa setting in its drive mode palette. What sets it apart is the use of either gloss or satin black on as many as 30 different exterior elements, to go with the Narvik Black paint that comes as standard. Said elements include the front undershield and rear scuff plates, which are finished in satin black powder coat, the satin black recovery eyes and the gloss black quad exhaust tips. The Land Rover oval on the grille is black with darkened silver script, while even the silencer and centre box covers and optional towbar (electrically deployable natch) have a gloss or satin black finish.

The brake calipers? Black, with silver script. The wheels in front of them? A choice of 20” forged alloys or 22” gloss black jobs, with black centre caps and dark grey Defender script.

The interior features black semi‑aniline leather with Kvadrat, used for the first time in a Defender, to add a soft and tactile finish to the seats. The dash panel features exposed areas in satin black powder coat, while an optional chopped carbon fibre finish can be chosen for the interior details.

‘There’s no denying the presence and purpose of Defender Octa,’ commented

‘The introduction of Defender Octa Black takes things up a notch. We know our clients love giving their Defenders all‑black

Everyone has a favourite green lane

Land Rovers and green laning go hand in hand. You don’t need to be into one to be into the other, but this being Britain it’s probably fair to say that 90% of the miles done on the nation’s byways down the years have been done in Landies.

Even if green laning is not your thing, you’ve probably done some. Personally, I love it. To me, it’s not an ‘off roading’ thing (I do love that too, don’t get me wrong), it’s a passport out of everyday British life. This little country of ours is so fenced off, so restricted, so owned by people… when I first learned that green lanes exist, I was enthralled by the idea that there could still be roads here that haven’t had tarmac slapped on them. You mean freedom still exists? Green laners are Great British Eccentrics who relish being able to break out of the tight little straitjacket everyday life puts around us.

So it’s quite ironic that actually, when we’re on the lanes we’re following a very strict set of rules – including some we’ve imposed on ourselves. Ironic but very necessary – and it doesn’t detract one bit from the enjoyment.

Everyone who does it has a favourite lane, and most of the time that lane is Strata Florida. There are, or were, many other contenders, but so many of the classics have been stolen from us now. Even when the likes of Stanage Edge, Sarn Helen, The Ridgeway et al were still alive, anyway, Strata Florida was already many people’s idea of the daddy among lanes.

So it’s great to see that it’s now fully open again, following repairs to a section of the track that had become washed out and eroded. The Green Lane Association deserves massive praise for the work it does to make stuff like this happen – without it, the entire hobby would almost certainly have been outlawed by now and many iconic lanes would for sure have been left to rot.

7

If you’re not already a member, let me encourage you to join – it really is the best £49 you’ll ever spend. Everyone has a favourite green lane, after all – and whatever it is, it needs all the protection it can get.

Alan Kidd, Group Editor alan.kidd@assignment-media.co.uk

Strata Florida fully open once more after Green Lane Association runs programme of repairs

Strata Florida is fully open once again, after the Green Lane Association (GLASS) worked with a local landowner to repair a section of the lane which had become damaged. An ancient road between Pontrhydfendigaid and Abergwesyn in the Cambrian Mountains of Mid Wales, Strata Florida is arguably Britain’s best loved right of way, which countless Land Rovers having negotiated its changeable surfaces and innumerable ford down the years.

The damaged section of the track, which had long since become eroded into a series of axle twisters, became washed out thanks to a combination of poor drainage and intensive rainfall. As can happen in these circumstances, this then started attracting the wrong kind of 4x4 driver, with off piste activity raising concerns (not for the first time) that the local authority would seek to impose a TRO.

In total, 1000 tonnes of material was used to repair just over a mile long section of track, creating a level surface

without ruts or holes. Infill material was used to reinstate the surrounding land and stone was added to the surface, with drainage channels and ditches then being dug to let surface water run off the route in order to protect it during wet weather. Drainage pipes were also re opened, connecting to nearby ditch‑ es to give rainwater a quick route away from the fragile right of way.

‘Strata Florida is a well known green lane that offers the chance to travel through some of the most remote and stunning scenery in Mid Wales,’ says GLASS board member Richard Price.

‘The Association is pleased to have played a role in repairing it so that it can continue to be enjoyed for many years to come. This project has given us the opportunity to engage positive‑ ly with landowners and to show how much can be achieved when organisa‑ tions work in partnership for the benefit of inclusive countryside access.

‘We would ask anyone driving Strata Florida to do so responsibly so that landowners and the local authority can see that motorised access isn’t detrimental to the landscape – and that it brings significant benefits, especially to elderly or disabled drivers who would not

SV Black joins Range Rover family with extended haptic features for stereo – and

lots of black bits everywhere else

The latest addition to the Range Rover SV family is the SV Black – an ‘exquisite interpretation of luxury and personalisation’ which Land Rover says ‘represents refined elegance in its purest form.’

It also represents the colour black. Whether or not in its purest form is for you to decide, but there’s a LOT of black stuff here. Land Rover describes it as ‘dipped in black’ – the body is finished in Narvik gloss and there are matching details and finishes everywhere you look. some of them never previously available on the vehicle.

Inside, it’s… black. Black leather, black veneers, black ceramic gear shift-

er, you name it. Oh, and since we’re on the subject of black things, a new generation of more sustainable tyres will be introduced across the Range Rover model line later this year.

It’s about more than just going unnoticed at Sisters of Mercy concerts, though. The SV Black is equipped with Sensory Floor, an evolution of the Range Rover’s Body-And-Soul-Seat technology, which now uses haptic feedback through the floor mats to enhance the experience of listening to music. ‘Sensory Floor creates precisely synchronised pulsations in the floor, harmonising with the RR Meridian Signature Surround System and haptic

seat technology using AI optimising software,’ it sez ‘ere.

The new technology is fitted in the front passenger and rear footwells of all long-wheelbase Range Rover SV models as standard. The driver doesn’t get it, which seems odd because the system also offers a range of wellness programmes whose ‘measurable benefits’ include reduced stress and improved concentration.

Orders for the Range Rover SV Black will open in late 2025. It will be available in five-seat, standard-wheelbase and four or five-seat, long-wheelbase form, in each case powered by the familiar 615bhp V8 engine.

THE GREAT BRITISH LAND ROVER SHOW

NEWARK SHOWGROUND

3 AUGUST 2025

Why not stay and enjoy more at Newark for 2025

The Great British Land Rover

Show first took place at Donington Park back in 2015 and has graced a number of venues over the years since then including NAEC Stoneleigh and most recently was back at Bath & West Showground in April where we enjoyed our busiest and biggest weekend yet as the start of our ten year anniversary celebrations!

Now, we’re delighted to welcome you all back to our Summer show at Newark Showground where we’ve been expanding our offering as well! If you’ve been doing Land Rovers for a while the venue will need no introduction. Newark Showground is a large, modern and very well equipped site with everything you could ask for –including an excellent off-road course where you’ll be able to put your own Land Rover through its paces.

To celebrate our ten year anniversary, we’ve released a new type of ticket which allows any Land Rover and its driver into the showground for less than a standard adult ticket in advance.

As well as saving your walking for the stands, your vehicle becomes part of the show for others to admire, and you’ll receive a free GBLRS Bath & West window sticker!

As always at the GBLRS, there’ll be a wide range of trade stands in a variety of show areas. And in addition to this, we’ve reserved a section for the clubs that are the lifeblood of the Land Rover scene. See overleaf for a list of those attending

We’ll be hoping for a sunny weekend like last year because for the first time at our Newark event, camping is available – and you’ll be able to relax and enjoy an evening of live

music, bar and food options, on what promises to be a memorable summer Saturday evening.

During the days of the show, the off-road area will be given over to a drive-round route – marshalled by the Green Lane Association and sure to be as popular as ever. It’s suitable for Land Rovers of every kind, from a basic old Series truck to a fancy new one bristling with electronic everything, and there’ll be marshals to keep you right if you’re new to the off-road game – and tow you out if it all goes wrong!

If you purchase a Land Rover Owner Pass, you’ll also have the option to be part of our Show & Shine Competition, sponsored by 4x4 Tyres. Visitors to the show will be able to vote for their favourites in various categories and winners will be announced on Sunday.

The Green Lane Association is a national, not-for-profit organisation that exists to preserve our historic network of green lanes and to encourage responsible and inclusive usage of these byways and unclassified roads. In 2025, we are celebrating our 30th anniversary, and we are delighted to be exhibiting at the three Great British Land Rover Shows. We will also be designing and running the popular off-road courses at the Bath and West Showground in April and the Newark Showground in August.

We’ll be on hand to explain how to find legal and sustainable routes and to offer our top tips on how to drive or ride responsibly, ensuring you have an enjoyable and safe day out laning. We offer a range of benefits for members, including our unique TrailWise2 mapping software, which shows which routes are legal to drive and provides real-time information on the condition of green lanes, including any restrictions or obstructions. This invaluable tool is essential for planning a day out and is only available through membership in the Green Lane Association.

Our core belief is that everyone has

the right to access the countryside and to share multi-user public rights of way without prejudice to their method of travel. We are dedicated to promoting inclusive countryside access for all users through education, physical works, and legal action. We are a friendly and welcoming organisation with a network of local Area Reps across England and Wales, who can provide advice and guidance on how to start green laning. Many areas arrange group laning trips to give new members a social and fun way to gain knowledge about how to lane responsibly – from what routes to take to recommendations on what equipment to carry and what to do in case of problems. We take our responsibilities as countryside users seriously and seek to work with local authorities to repair and maintain green lanes, ensuring they remain open and accessible for all to enjoy. This may involve a financial contribution, where appropriate, or the time and labour of our volunteers. We have representatives on many local authority access forums who advocate for

the rights and responsibilities of motorised users. As a last resort, we take legal action against local authorities that fail in their statutory duty to maintain public rights of way. In recent years, we have successfully reopened routes that local authorities and landowners sought to close to certain user groups. We will continue to pursue legal action, when necessary, to preserve this principle of inclusive countryside access.

We look forward to meeting attendees at the Great British Land Rover Shows and will be on hand to answer any questions about green laning, both at the off-road courses and at our show stands. Please do come and say hello!

STITCH AND RIVET IS A SMALL BRITISH COMPANY WHICH MAKES SEAT COVERS, plus luggage, clothing and accessories, for Land Rovers. With a small team and a focus on responsible manufacturing, it promises that its products are always hand-made, always in Britain – and with the majority of its items being made to customer order, it can offer a particularly wide range of options and opportunities for customisation.

We’ve featured the company’s Landy-themed apparel in recent issues, but its range of seat covers continues to be the bedrock of its business. These are available for front, second-row and inward-facing rear seats alike, the latter in both individual and bench form – and as well as protecting your Land Rover’s interior, their luxury finish, using a range of high-performance fabrics and trims and a premium quilted design, will give a tired looking cabin a new lease of life.

The latest new addition to the company’s range for the Puma-era Defender are the 60/40 split second-row seat covers seem here. Land Rovers are hard-working vehicles whose insides take a beating from the wear and tear of day-to-day life, especially when you’re climbing in and out nonstop with your work clothes on.

Stitch and Rivet is particularly good for offering a wide range of choices in its products, and these seats are no exception. You can get them in five main colours (Black, Sandy, Green, Navy and Berry) and, for £15 extra, a vast selection of contrasting thread options. The quilted finish, with a choice of striped or chequered patters, is also optional, though at £25 this too looks like excellent value for money.

‘Made to order and always hand-made in Britain, our luxury seat covers will give your Land Rover a new lease of life,’ says Stitch and Rivet. ‘Made from our favourite high-performance fabrics and trims, our original seat covers are an easy, instant upgrade for your interior.’

Don’t look back

143: Sep 2025 www.thelandy.co.uk

Taking on someone else’s project can be a minefield. No need to look back in anger if you make it your own, though – even if the drive home can be a bit of an experience

Don’t buy someone else’s old project, they say. Well, Aaron Parke went against that advice – and he’s never looked back.

The identity of the someone whose project it was is lost in time, however the story goes that he was a member of the Series II Club. His Land Rover,

an 88” IIA 2.25 petrol dating from 1965, was getting on a bit, so a group of his fellow members agreed to help him with a body-off restoration.

For obvious reasons, we don’t know the full extent of the work that was done back then. We did ask the club, but we weren’t able to find anyone who could remember the vehicle. Aaron does know, however, that the chassis was fully welded as part of the process, gaining new outriggers and losing all the rotten metal it had gathered along the way.

There’s a new engine burbling away under the bonnet, too. We know this

Quite a contrast between the shovel on the boot and the crossmember on the chassis, there. Aaron says he’s currently going through the chassis bit by bit, cleaning it up, knocking off the surface rust and finishing it off with primer and surface enamel

because it’s there for all to see, with the tell-tale light green colour that marks it out as a military lump. Preserved in 1976, this runs a Webber carb and the

original generator has been upgraded to an alternator. Whatever else happened back then, Aaron bought the Land Rover

Words: Olly Sack Pictures: Aaron Parke

the vehicle is a 2.25 petrol dating back to 1965. The 2.25 petrol itself appears to be rather newer, having been put into long-term storage by the military midway through the following decade. It runs a Webber carb now, and an alternator instead of the original generator. It would appear to have been fitted by the team from the Series II Club who undertook the rebuild for one of their fellow members, though how long ago that was is shrouded in the mists of time. What we do know is that the hood and sticks are a lot more recent, because Aaron says he only fitted them earlier this year

something like half a decade ago after the old owner had passed away. It was a hard-top at that point, and he drove it home from somewhere near Sheffield.

‘It took me a few hours of wondering whether I’d really made the right decision!’ he admits.

He clearly came to the conclusion that he had, because he put the 88 straight to work on his daily commute –which was something like a two and a half hour round trip on a good day. Just what the Series IIA was built for, obviously.

Enough to make him change his mind? Yes and no. The Land Rover itself was spot-on, but it was going to have to become his own. ‘After a few weeks tolerating the noise and micro climate of the tin top,’ as he puts it, ‘I decided to turn it into a soft-top.’

This was the making of the vehicle. ‘Rolling the sides up successfully lets much of the noise out when cruising at 55-60mph in overdrive,’ continues Aaron. ‘And it is surprisingly more cosy in the winter with the sides down, with none of the condensation of the hard-top.’

Obviously, ‘cosy’ is a relative term, even with a Smith’s heater which,

Aaron says, ‘does some job of taking the nip out of the air.’ It’s not warm like a car – in fact, it’s not even warm like an early 90 or 110, and on a cold winter’s day those were not warm at all.

‘Decent clothing is always the order of the day,’ confirms Aaron. ‘But then, when the sun arrives, how cool is this thing?’ Safe to say he’s preaching to the converted there.

It’s also cool because he’s done a lot of work on its body. The panels were decent when he got it, as you’d expect after a restoration, but during his time with the truck he went back through some old filler repairs and did them right, hand-beating the panels back into shape before repainting it in a generic heritage-lookalike light matt green. He then flatted it back for what he calls ‘a patina-type finish’ – we’re very much of the view that real patina can only be earned, not created, however the finish has an honesty to it that’s absent from the factory-plus paint jobs you see on hundred-grand Series Is with all the character restored out of them. In particular, flatting a top coat to reveal hints of another colour hidden beneath it is a technique we’ve seen put to good use in the eyeball-pleasing world of hot

rods and custom cars, and if it’s good enough for those guys…

The overall appearance of coolness is done no harm by a set of Wolf steels finished in brilliant white, too. These are shod with 235/85R16 Cooper Discoverer S/T all-terrains, giving the vehicle a chunkier stance without making it look ridiculous. As it is, when you view it from side on the spare kind of dwarfs the bonnet – though with a set of pioneer tools mounted next to it on the driver’s-side wing top the cool factor gets cranked up further than ever.

To make it cooler still, earlier this year Aaron treated the vehicle to a new canvas hood. The sticks beneath

it were renewed at the same time, too. It’s also had a new galvanised bumper, as well as door tops and bottoms – the latter not as recently as the hood, we’d assume, given the patches of red show-through along the waistline which match those on the wings and bulkhead.

We’re talking a lot about the truck’s appearance, which is something you do when they look this good, but no way has it been a show pony for Aaron. In fact, most of the hard graft has gone into keeping it reliable and holding back the sands of time in a bid to prevent it from slipping back into the state that had it wanting a full resto in the first place.

To this end, a recent job has involved cleaning the chassis, knocking off the surface rust then finishing it off with primer and chassis enamel. At the time of writing, he had done the rear crossmember then started the main frame and, going from front to back, made it to just behind the bulkhead outriggers. Not the most glamorous of jobs, but few could be more worthwhile. Talking of the bulkhead, Aaron says it’s solid – though it’s had new A-pillars and footwells in the past. He’s done the petrol tank, too, as well as the starter motor and both propshafts, then on the inside the canvas got some new seat backs and bases to keep it company. Oh, and did we mention that he gave

Having converted it into a sort-top to prevent himself from being deafened on the way to work, Aaron has repainted the 88 in a Heritage-style light green – which he went on to flatten back down for what he calls ‘a patina-type finish.’ It works really well – and the overall appearance is set off superbly by a set of Wolf steels in white

it a full rewire? Maybe not as big a job on an old ‘un as it would be on something like a four-door Range Rover resto, but still not for the faint hearted. If you’re eagle eyed, you might already have spotted a lack of windscreen wipers in the pictures; one of them was away being reconditioned at the time, while the other still wants putting right for the full deluxe wiper-oneach-side experience.

The heater isn’t working at the moment either, Aaron tells us, so there’s another job for the list. In time for winter, maybe. For now, this is one of those Landies that make you want to get out there in the summer sun and head for the hills, the beach, the pub, wherever… or just out and about to enjoy the experience of driving around in the open air aboard a vehicle that brings the outside in to you.

There are rough old leafers out there, and there are big-buck trailer queens, and in the middle there are the ones you fall in love with. Whatever you think of its patina, this is a Series IIA that absolutely oozes charm and character, and the additions Aaron has made give it a quirky attitude that’s perfectly in keeping with the downto-earth work truck it still is. Buying someone else’s project needn’t be so bad after all.

Many thanks to Aaron Parke for his help in compiling this article. His Series IIA is currently listed for sale on page 26 of this issue

Still got it

143: Sep 2025 www.thelandy.co.uk

There was a time when a lightly modified Series I was the extent of any trials driver’s ambitions. Those days are a long way in the past – but given the chance, it’s still possible to show the new stuff a thing or two in an old RTV motor from way back when

Along time ago, we had more Series Is than we knew what to do with. The notion that they would one day become classics seemed like nonsense – so we bought and sold them for sweeties, we pillaged them for parts, we chopped them about and we took them trialling.

If you’re old enough but still have your marbles, you might remember the days when every weekend, RTV trials the length and breadth of the country would echo to the sound of old leaf-sprung Landies by the dozen

chugging their way between the canes. Later, people started getting clever and tuning their engines, fitting Lightweight springs, adjusting their steering lock and so on, and that set us fair on the road to the hybrid era – when not only were Series Is still ten a penny, so were early Range Rovers, so people would cut up one of each to create coil-sprung comp cars. Makes you shudder to think of it now, but today’s classics are yesterday’s old stinkers.

Not that any finely aged Land Rover deserves to be called such a thing, of

course. Nick Vince’s 80 is not a classic in any traditional sense of the word, having been a trialler for probably most of its life now, but it’s not so much an old stinker as an old hero.

Built and signed off on 2 January 1950, and therefore now officially into its fourth quarter-century on the planet, 75 BC 09 was originally despatched three days later to the Ministry of Supply for the War Department. It served for 12 years before being sold off and was registered to its first civilian owner in Warwickshire on 22 May

Having got back into trialling after a decade and a half away, Nick soon found that the 80 was no longer competitive. So he bought a V8 coiler to replace it, and the old stager went into storage in his barn. Four years later, when lockdown struck, it was time for a project – and the joyous process of getting it back on the road began

1962, bearing the newly issued number 407 DAC.

What it spent the next two or three decades doing is anybody’s guess.

But at some point, it acquired Series II axles and a Rover 3.5 V8 engine – and a new life as a trialler had begun.

Nick’s own history as a trials driver goes back similarly far to the mid-80s, when he was to be found competing with the Midland ROC and Wye and Welsh LRC. His career behind the wheel was put on hold, however, when his other career (the kind that pays for the trialling) saw him moving abroad. That was in 2000, and he wasn’t ready

to get back into the game until 2014 –by which time he was retired and living in Pembrokeshire.

‘I retired in January 2014,’ he explains. ‘I wanted to get back into trialling, so I bought this 80. But I quickly discovered that things had moved on, and it was hard to keep up with the coil-sprung triallers with power steering. So after a couple of years, we bought one – and the 80 went into hibernation in my barn.’

And there it might still be, were it not for the appearance of covid in the world. Nick suddenly had time aplenty and the perfect vehicle to which to

On top of everything else, the

devote it: ‘I spent many happy hours sourcing the right bits and getting her back onto the road, on her original registration, he says. ‘Since then, she ventures out to some Pembrokeshire

Classic Car Club pub meetings and the odd run round the lanes with the roof off on a sunny day.’ Sounds idyllic.

But once a warrior, always a warrior. And so it was that after all that time in the wilderness, the 80 was brought back into the fold.

a

Earlier this year, Nick saw an advert for a Patina Trial, for leaf-sprung motors, being promoted by the Peak and Dukeries Land Rover Club in Derbyshire. ‘I decided that as she is a Land Rover, she should really be used for what she was designed for,’ he says. ‘So I and my son Ryan both entered to double-drive her.’

This was no small undertaking. From his home in south-west Wales, with the 80 on a trailer it was a round

trip of 600 miles and 13 hours. But it was worth it. ‘We received a very warm welcome and had a wonderful time,’ Nick reports. ‘Our criteria for success was to last the day – which we did, as she completed all ten sections twice over. And to put icing on the cake, we came 1st and 2nd!’

That, however, was only half the story. Ryan is also a member of the Midland Off Road Club – and by a happy coincidence they were putting on

a trial near Warwick the following day. So with the 80 back on the trailer, they took the comparatively short hop south by a couple of counties and doubleentered that one, too.

‘They are a very family friendly club,’ says Nick. ‘The 80 managed to complete all nine sections twice over – and again we had the good fortune to come 1st and 2nd on the day.’ It’s starting to sound rather less like good fortune and more like a seriously skilled

pair of trials drivers hiding their light under a bushel.

Either way, the events more than paid Nick back for all the time he put into dragging his old Series I halfway across the country. ‘It was a delight to spend two days trialling with some lovely people,’ he reflects. ‘And it was incredibly satisfying to really put the 80 to the test – and to be reminded of just how capable a 75 year old Landy is.’ Maybe more people should try it…

‘What’s your dream three-car garage?’ is one of those classic conversation starters down the pub or on social media, and we’d challenge you to find a better one than this. Nick’s old Disco 3 was a real rarity, being powered by the 4.4-litre Jag V8 rather than the near-universal and, as came to know, tremendously frustrating TDV6; his coiler’s a V8 too, with the 3.9-litre unit from the late Range Rover Classic and Discovery 1 throbbing away beneath its bonnet. Then there’s the 80, seen here prior to its reawakening as a road-going Land Rover. Between the elegant family motor and do-it-all workhorse, the hardcore off-road weapon and the winsome classic, you really are looking at a collection that covers every base here.

Minilite Alloy Wheels

Iconic Genuine Minilite Wheels now available for Land Rover’s!

The original Minilite wheel, was probably the most successful competition wheel of the 1960’s and 70’s. As the name suggests, it was originally developed as a magnesium competition wheel for the then revolutionary new Austin ‘Mini’, but its instant success meant that it was soon to be seen on many of the serious race and rally cars of that era. A new iconic style was born, and to this day, all genuine Minilite wheels are made to that original classic design. Originally conceived for race and rally, demand soon grew for road car applications, and has remained so ever since. Minilite wheels are ‘Low-Pressure’ die cast, in high grade aluminium alloy; machined on the latest CNC equipment, 100% pressure tested, and finally powder coated for maximum protection against the elements.
