LAND ROVER’S DEFENDER AWARDS INITIATIVE, which supports small charities and non-profit organisations working on local humanitarian and conservation projects, was launched in the middle of 2025 with the promise of a Defender, a £100,000 bursary and expert mentorship for each of winner chosen from seven countries around the world.
Since then, a selection process has been underway behind the scenes –and this has yielded a shortlist of 56 projects from around the world. Working in a variety of areas, these fit into the awards’ four categories – named Defenders of the Land, Defenders of the Sea, Defenders of the Wild and
Defenders of Humanity. Among the shortlisted initiatives are those providing disaster relief, protecting endangered species, raising awareness of local health risks and tackling issues including poverty, violence and suicide. Nations included in the scope of the awards are the UK, France, Germany, Italy, Australia, Japan and South Africa.
The shortlisted projects will be assessed by a judging panel co-chaired by Defender boss Mark Cameron and Dr Moreangels Mbizah, a Zimbabwean conservation biologist and founder of Wildlife Conservation Action. Among the judges are German adventure and landscape photographer Max Münch; Swiss explorer and environmentalist

Bertrand Piccard; Italian actress and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Alessandra Mastronardi; Australian TV presenter and National Geographic film maker Tyson Mayr; and Michiaki Matsushima, Editorial Director of WIRED Japan.
The shortlisted initiatives in each category include:
Defenders of the Land: Fondazione Sylva, an organisation in South-East Italy which regenerates abandoned or Mafia-confiscated land and transforms it into forests for native species to enhance biodiversity, improve air quality and mitigate climate change; Next Commons Lab, a Japanese initiative treating forests, rivers, landscapes and seas as interconnected common areas to be regenerated and sustained, whose pilot site in Owase City has already shown great success; and the Kinshizen Forest Creation Association Seedling Bank, which, using natural processes, store seedlings to create and safeguard future forests.
Defenders of the Wild: Restoring Upland Nature, a programme aiming to return the Golden Eagle to UK skies using a combination of cutting-edge conservation science and handson engagement while working with landowners, gamekeepers, schools and community groups; and the African

Defenders
the people most at risk of skin cancer in Australia – where rates are 12 times the global average; ReAct, whose volunteers provide

drone-assisted monitoring and search and rescue services to vulnerable communities hit by natural disasters; and Sapocycle, which provides meaningful work for people with disabilities in Germany through taking an innovative approach to waste reduction by recycling used hotel soaps.
Defenders of the Sea: BlueHeart, also in Germany, which raises

awareness of and fosters empathy for environmental issues such as plastic pollution and over-fishing; Women in Ocean Science, a UK initiative focused on empowering the next generation of female ocean leaders by delivering marine research, restoration and outreach through women-led coastal expeditions; and the Blue Carbon Gardeners project in Corsica, whose goal is to restore underwater forests responsible for carbon sequestration using an innovative method of transplanting natural Posidonia seagrass cuttings using biodegradable staples. The combination of pioneering ideas, high-tech solutions, diverse environments and outright heroism seen throughout the projects in the shortlist very much chimes with what the Defender is all about. ‘The calibre of the entries is phenomenal and the variety of projects on the shortlist is testament to the pioneering work being done by local conservation and humanitarian heroes around the world,’ said Cameron. ‘These awards celebrate those who embrace the impossible every day – just like Defender.’

IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME BUT, after a huge effort by the Green Lane Association and many other user groups, the small network of byways close to Stonehenge are finally open again. Closed for years on a rolling temporary traffic regulation order, for no obvious reason other than rights of way being inconvenient, these lanes are wholly sustainable and suitable for almost any vehicle – indeed one of them, which runs right past the stones, almost always has a variety of cars and camper vans parked along its verges.
In addition to this short lane, the rights of way in the immediate area also include one running north towards Larkhill from the Stonehenge site and another which heads south-west across Normanton Down from the far side of the A303, eventually concluding at a junction with the A360. These lanes form one contiguous route of around three and a half miles – although to follow it this way would mean crossing the phenomenally busy A303 at a junction which GLASS asks all users to treat only as a left turn.
Happily, there’s a second lane just to the east of this one which runs south from the A303 towards the hamlet of Lake. Like the others, this is well surfaced and eminently usable – we once encountered a memorably ridiculous (but very determined) attempt by a couple of local residents to prevent us from continuing on it on the basis that we might scare their horses, but that was a good many years ago and GLASS’ Trailwise 2 website shows no suggestion of lane users having come up against similar antics in recent times.
One restriction which certainly isn’t ridiculous and must be treated with respect is the temporary traffic regulation orders which continue to be active on all these lanes during the period around the winter and summer solstices. We once went laning near another site (the Avebury stones) without realising it was the summer solstice and while it was like stumbling into the middle of a very happy party, we had never seen congestion like it on a green lane or anywhere else. Reason enough to avoid Stonehenge for a weeks to either side of these dates (the solstices themselves are normally on 21 December and 21 June, give or take a day either way), even if they weren’t closed anyway
So it’s good news, though as always on the lanes the potential for things to turn sour is always there. ‘I am concerned that the Council are still under pressure to control access, particularly regarding extended stays by vehicles,’ comments GLASS’ Wiltshire rep John Lippiatt. ‘If any of you notice any restrictions being considered, please make a written objection and copy me in by emailing wiltshire.rep@glass-uk.org.’
Elsewhere in Wiltshire, the heroes and heroines of the Green Lane Association’s rights of way signposting team have been out half a dozen times so far this year. Over many years, this initiative has transformed the Plain from a place where it’s almost impossible not to get lost into one where it’s similarly hard to go wrong.
Nonetheless, people can still mess up in other ways. And, almost unbelievably, Wiltshire rep John Lippiatt says that with the wet season on the way, ‘based on evidence from last year on the Plain, we can expect problems with people using the sign posts as winch anchor points.’
Of course, if you need to use a winch at all on a green lane you’ve already gone wrong. Mistakes do get made, however, and there are parts of the Plain where these posts may be the only vertical thing around. Nonetheless, they’re only retained by a bag of postcrete at best (early on in the waymarking project, they were just rammed into the ground) so there’s no way they’re going to stand up to being used as winching points.
‘If you see someone about to do this,’ suggests John, ‘and you are comfortable with the idea, please offer your vehicle as an anchor. And try to get them to join us while you are there!’

Afew weeks ago, I took my kids to a car show. Not a Land Rover in sight at this one, it wasn’t a busman’s holiday. Instead, it was the UK’s first dedicated lowrider show.
What’s this got to do with Landies?
Well, lowriders make people smile. They have no purpose but to entertain. They’re those cars that hop up and down and drive with a wheel in the air, in case you’re asking yourself what one is. A branch of the custom car scene, and one whose ground-scraping stance and glorious paint schemes makes it about as far removed from anything to do with off-roading as it’s possible to be.
But, and here’s the thing, they’re cars that are just for fun. Same as hot rods, same as so many other branches of car culture – including classics and so many modified Land Rovers. Yes, we tell ourselves that we build them for a purpose, but we all know perfectly well that we love the way they make people smile. We all want to be loved, then all is said and done, and if people love our rides we can believe they love us. Put it another way. All these things are cars that have a sense of humour. Or at least that showcase your own sense of humour to the world. You know the sort of person who goes about in an expensive Audi or BMW and takes himself ridiculously seriously? Or who thinks he’s a driving hero and absolutely refuses to accept that his Ferrari is just a status symbol? Rule of thumb: if that guy looks down his nose at your car, you’re cool. Because sure as hell he’s not.

Will he sneer at your Land Rover? Of course – unless, ironically, it the kind of Land Rover you probably sneer at yourself. In a world of ‘bought not built’, creativity and individuality are seen as bad things – as are all many wonderful cars that come from them.
I am of course talking about people with no sense of humour. People who don’t smile at a hopping low-low or a mud-covered Landy. People whose idea of a good car has no soul. I always like to think my 110 is smirking at them. Because it’s like every enthusiast’s car. It likes a laugh.

If you’re in the mood for a holiday to remember and you feel like treating yourself to an adventure aboard a modern Land Rover, luxury selfdrive tour specialist Celtic Routes has what you’re looking for. The company has just launched its 2026 Scotland collection, a set of tours featuring three new destinations along with enhanced versions of four existing itineraries.
The three new tours are:
• Scottish Highlands and Skye: ‘A cinematic journey through the Highlands, blending wild landscapes with cultural landmarks and luxury stays’
• Heritage Scotland: ‘A celebration of Scotland’s castles, traditions, and timeless charm’
• Luxury Scotland: ‘The ultimate indulgence in boutique travel, featuring five-star hotels, fine dining and breathtaking drives’
In addition to top-end accommodation amid the magnificent landscape of the Highlands and Islands, Celtic Routes promise that these tours will include ‘immersive local experiences.’ We’re not entirely sure what that means but they also describe their adventures as being ‘curated’, which suggests they’ve been studying at the Land Rover school of the English language.
Which would be appropriate, because when you travel with Celtic Routes you won’t find yourself slumming it in a minging old Disco 2. Oh no. Customers get to choose between a Defender 110, Discovery 5 or Range Rover Evoque, all of them current models introduced to the fleet within the last year. Or a Mini Cooper S – again a modern one, so no trying to blow the bloody doors off.

Also on the roster for the coming year are four tours which existing clients will know – though not in their latest, upgraded form. These are the NC500 Classic, adding ‘upgraded stays and local insider experiences’ to the ever-popular loop around the top of Scotland; Highlands and Islands, blending the best of the mainland and islands up the West Coast; Ultimate Scotland,

‘an extended adventure showcasing the very best of the Highlands’; and Scotland and Northern Island, ‘a crossCeltic journey linking two nations steeped in legend.’
Northern Ireland, a Celtic nation. No, we can’t imagine anyone wanting a word with them about that one either.
‘We’re thrilled to bring a fresh perspective to exploring Scotland,’

comments James Markwell, Head of Marketing at Celtic Routes. ‘These new and reimagined tours celebrate the best of Celtic heritage and natural beauty while offering guests the freedom to travel at their own pace in comfort and style.’
It won’t come as any surprise at all that these tours cost more than a week at Butlins. The NC500 Classic,
for example, is priced from £1420 and the Ultimate Scotland tour from £3140, and that’s per person, so traditional overlanding this is not. Compare it to the sort of travel experiences Land Rover itself puts on, though (€14,300 for 10 days in Botswana, for example) and a visit to www.celticroutes.com will quickly show you why people call them the canny Scots.
TWISTED AUTOMOTIVE, WHICH IS A QUARTER OF A CENTURY OLD THIS YEAR, has for the first time launched an official presence in America. The Yorkshire company has partnered with the Monticello Motor Club (MMC), an exclusive automotive country club nestled in New York’s Catskill Mountains, whose final race meet of the 2025 season hosted its first US showcase. The club is frequented by the sort of high rollers who can afford the £180-£320,000 it typically takes to put a Twisted rebuild in your garage. Guests at the event had the chance to browse a selection of the company’s products (‘a curated Twisted line-up,’ to quote: maybe it’s something to do with Land Rovers but really, take that word and shove it…) including a 110 TV8 double cab, a Series III 109” and TD5 110 and 130s.
The event also marked the international debut of the TBug, an original-shape Volkswagen Beetle inspired by the classic Baja Bug but packing twice the power and running performance off-road suspension. Not a Land Rover but certainly a fellow traveller. For those fortunate (and rich) enough to have been invited, an exclusive driving route in the scenic landscape of the Catskill mountains was followed by an afternoon of hospitality complete with roast beef and Yorkshire puddings from Twisted’s home county.
‘As Twisted takes root in America, our goal is to build a strong community of enthusiasts, adventurers, and collectors across North America,’ said director and MMC member Jonathan Wilson. ‘As luxury carmakers explore lifestyle-driven experiences rather than just product launches, Twisted joins the likes of Aston Martin and Lotus in expanding into the US market. This is just the beginning.’
Twisted founder Charles Fawcett described the company’s move into the US market as the most significant chapter in its story to date. ‘America has always loved the Defender,’ he said, ‘but this is the first chance to experience it the Twisted way. ‘Monticello Motor Club is the perfect place to begin that journey. With expansion into Japan and now America, Twisted is cementing its position as a global luxury automotive brand, while staying true to our philosophy: stay anti-ordinary.’

RAPTOR ENGINEERING is well known for its innovative products which make the very functional traditional Defender dashboard more functional than ever. But the company can do the same thing for the Series III, too, as well as older pre-Defender versions of the 90 and 110.
Robustly manufactured from steel and aluminium, the Defender and Series III Glovebox is tucked away out of sight and also comes with a lock.
The glovebox unit is vented, too, so that air will flow straight through it and into the cab.
Also available for the Defender and Series III are Raptor’s Trim Panels, which are neatly designed to tidy up and strengthen your truck’s dashboard by covering up the gaps. They come powder-coated and can also be drilled to mount switches and sockets, as well as providing a sturdy location for things like cup holders, nav mounts and so on.
And it’s not just older Land Rovers

that you can improve with a bit of Raptor magic. The company’s Puma Pod, again made from steel and ali, is made to fit perfectly between the air vents on top of the Puma’s dashboard. It’s available with a choice of panels so you can choose whether to use it for gauges or switches. They’ll cut it to your own requirements for a few quid more, too.

Also for the final variant of the true Defender is the Puma Glovebox. This is an all-steel one-piece unit which comes ready to instal , with no fiddly hinges to fit or line up. If you can use a screwdriver, promises Raptor, you can fit it in literally five minutes!

Ease of fitting is a common theme with Raptor’s products. And so too is great value for money – as you’ll discover when you visit www.raptor-engineering.co.uk, or better still pay them a visit at the show Stand: 2A26

KENT HERITAGE WORKS INTRO-
DUCES THE ADMIRAL – the ultimate classic Land Rover Series III.
First shown at the 2025 Concours of Elegance, this 1976 88” has undergone two years of development and re-engineering to become the first in KHW’s exclusive ‘1-of-1 Collection’. This is a series of individual creations which are never to be repeated, guaranteeing their exclusivity.
While the vehicle has been comprehensively improved, however, it remains a Land Rover through and through. Its engine is a 3.5-litre V8, rebuilt by V8 Developments to produce huge amounts of torque, and its gearbox is a ZF automative as used in the original Range Rover.
Further parts borrowed from elsewhere in the Land Rover portfolio include Range Rover diffs, Defender

brakes, P38 power steering and a Freelander 2 electronic handbrake. In addition, more than forty custom parts have been used, all of them designed in-house and 3D printed in hybrid carbon fibre.
The Admiral is named after its paint finish, Admiralty Blue, a heritage colour reserved by the Royal Navy for vehicles used to transport VIPs. Inside, its bespoke cabin features a modified rear bulkhead for greater legroom and its seats are expertly trimmed in diamond-stitched tan leather. An integrated touch-screen allows full phone pairing and the cubby box contains yet another genuine Land Rover item, the fridge from a Range Rover Sport. In the back, the fl oor is trimmed in Flexiteek, a sustainable product free of any hardwood.
‘We have worked with our in-house team and some of the UK’s best artisan companies in the historic engineering and Land Rover industry,’ says Cliff Smith, the former Apple executive who founded Kent Heritage Works in the spring of 2024. Based near

Tunbridge Wells, the company boasts a staff who between them have more than 100 years’ experience in Land Rover servicing, repair and restoration. It describes its process as a blend of traditional fabrication and restoration skills with cutting-edge CAD design, 3D printing, integrated computer and vehicle systems as well as software programming, the result being ‘something truly unique’.
The Admiral is priced at £180,000 plus VAT. It will be succeeded by two further builds, already in progress,
this time based on the Range Rover Classic and again promising to be completely unique.
Kent Heritage Works also offers a full bespoke design and build service, saying ‘everything is literally possible’. Except replicating a 1-of-1 build, because they won’t do that. It’s not cheap – but it is part of ‘the world’s finest collection of unique, exclusive and individual classic Land Rovers and Range Rovers.’ Stand: 2B31

Of all the things you thought the world didn’t need any more of, you might have thought that lights for original-shape Defenders were quite high up the list. But turns out we DID need more of them – because Glohh’s GL-2 series, which plays the styling card with a design all of its own, has proved a hit in more than 100 countries around the world.
Starting with replacement tail lights, the range has since grown to include side lights and indicators. Interchangeable with the standard units, these have plug-and-play functionality meaning there’s no need for additional electronics or components when fitting them. Wiring is required on vehicles manufactured up to 1989, however, as are facelift plugs on those dated up to 1995.
Glohh promises that the lights will produce ‘cuttingedge brightness, clarity, and reliability, delivering consistent performance in all conditions’ and of course the lights are designed to meet all the relevant safety standards.

LAND ROVERS ARE EFFORTLESSLY COOL in a strictly metaphorical sense but when you’ve had one go full kettle on you, you quickly start to appreciate that in other ways the effort involved is keeping your coolant from, well, losing its cool is actually quite major and unrelenting. It takes more than just a thermostat to do the job, but it DOES take a thermostat and Lucas Classic has a range of these on offer through the Britpart dealer network.
These pretty much do what they say on the tin, but what it says on the tin differs slightly from one to another. Your choice is between a 74°C unit for the 2.25 petrol, 2.5 petrol, 2.5 n/a diesel, 2.5 TD and carbed V8; 78°C for the 2.6-litre Series II, IIA and III; and 88° for the 90 / 110, Discovery 1 and Range Rover Classic running the V8 Efi.

At first glance, you wouldn’t think that this ex-military 110 started life as a rare Helistart vehicle. But even with its MOD years behind it, you can’t help but feel that its best years are still to come

ALand Rover is a blank canvas, they say. And no-one has ever demonstrated that better than the Army, which found countless different British ways to equip them for specific jobs.
This here Defender 110, for example, served for just over 20 years as a Helistart unit. As the name suggests, these were used as support vehicles for the Combat Helicopter Force, with the ability to jump-start choppers when that’s what the job called for.
Dating from 1991, the vehicle is a Defender rather than a pre-Defender. This was the era when civvy Land Rovers were powered by the gamechanging 200Tdi engine, but the MOD wasn’t interested in that and stuck with the tremendously reliable but even more tremendously slow 2.5 n/a. A few

years later, when the Wolf contract was issued, the Army skipped the 200 and went straight to the 300Tdi, having decided it didn’t fancy the new Td5.
Anyway. The Helistart unit had a side locker containing a 24v DC supply for bumping choppers, with a dedicated 28v, 90amp alternator to keep its batteries ready for action.
Up top, a reinforced roof supported a maintenance platform allowing staff to service choppers in the field.
How many of these are still around?
Depends who you ask, but we’ve heard people claiming that what they’re selling is one of only seven, or ten.
We’ve seen someone advertising theirs as being ‘probably the only one on the road,’ too.
This is one of the others, all of which prove that guy wrong. It no longer has

the roof platform, which is a shame if you value originality (or have a helicopter to service) but it does still retain a variety of military features.
The jump-starting switchgear is all still there, contained in a side-mounted locker, and there are the usual others for jerry cans. Best of all, each wing is home to a box-mounted aerial – these aren’t wired up but they certainly look the part. One other omission is the second alternator, though its brackets are still in place under the bonnet should you want to replace it.
And would you want to replace it?
Well, between 2017 and 2019 the 110 was subjected to a full body-off restoration by David, its current owner – just not the kind that takes it back to the way it was in its youth. He says that it had already been converted to 12v before he bought it, which explains why the biggest thing under the bonnet is now the engine rather than the alternator that used to hide most of it from view.
While the chassis was at his mercy, David had it sand blasted, zinc flame sprayed and then painted black.
The bulkhead got a similar course of treatment, this time with powder-coat

primer to keep it healthy in the long term, and it went back together again with new poly bushes, heavy-duty steering rods and galvanised front turrets – not to mention all stainless fasteners wherever possible.
The suspension was upgraded too, with new shocks and heavy-duty springs fitted, while the rigid brake and clutch lines were replaced with new copper nickel pipes. New brake and clutch master and slave cylinders were also fitted, as were a new clutch and front discs.
Up front, there’s a black powdercoated grille, on either side of which the military-style headlamps are now equipped with halogen bulbs. They overlook a Goodwinch steel bumper – complete with winch cradle, as you’d expect, though there’s currently a vacancy for an actual winch to take its place there. Not what you’d call bling, exactly, but there certainly is a bit of eye appeal going on – as there is round the sides, where Terrafirma arch extensions help cover a set of 16J x 6.5 Wolf steels fitted with 238/85R16 Kumho KL71 muds. Where the maintenance platform has been removed, a set of Rhino roof bars offers the opportunity to mount a more usable kind of load instead.
Which could turn out to be relevant, as it looks like David may at one point have been thinking about doing a camper conversion on the 110. The wooden apparatus in the back is not in fact a desk on which for REME’s finest to lay out their spanners when tinkering with a Lynx here, a Gazelle there. No, it’s a bed. It folds away and, David says, can be removed without tools.
A mattress would make it even more comfortable, but we suspect we’re looking at it in stripped-out form here.
As the pictures also show, in the side of the hard-top above the bed he’s also installed a pair of ‘blind spot windows from Masai. He’s got a big thumbs-up for these, saying they make a huge difference to nearside visibility. Having experienced the sheer terror of driving down the slip road on to a Belgian motorway in a Defender Hard-Top while towing, we’re not about to disagree. Also on the inside, between the seats David has installed a cubby box made from plywood and topped off with a nice padded lid. It’s lockable, too, and there’s a bank of three cupholders at its base. These things matter. Talking of wood, the transfer lever is topped off with some sort of carved spiral thing that’s about 18 inches long and kind of makes your eyes water. We didn’t ask…
He does admit that the interior is spartan. And noisy. It’s the Defender owners who swear blind that their vehicles are anything else that you’ve got to be wary of.
As it is, this 110 is kind of in the twilight zone between military and civvy specs. It’s been properly restored and it’s certainly fit for purpose, but it feels like a reminder of the eternal truth that there’s no such thing as a Land Rover whose story is more than half told. The dresser-uppers at military vehicle shows wouldn’t be happy, but you can’t help but feel that there’s a home-brewed motorhome in there just waiting to get out. It may have jump started its last helicopter, but this has the vibe of a Land Rover whose best years lie ahead.
Thanks to the 110’s owner David for his help in compiling this article. It’s currently for sale – you’ll find it listed in the classifieds on page 22 of this issue.

A winning blend of eye appeal and subtle restraint, plus a deep dose of top-notch restoration by a leading Land Rover specialist, has turned this old 110 into a wagon that’ll never get sand kicked in its face

Words Tom Alderney
Pictures Legacy Overland

Bordeau is an unusual name for a Land Rover. At first glance, if you know anything at all about French geography (or wine), you might think it sounds like it’s missing the X-factor.
Actually, it’s probably safe to say that no-one’s missing the X Factor.
Anyway, as it turns out Bordeau is still a word, even without an X on the end. It’s a type of leather, a kind of sage that gardeners get excited about, the name of a company that makes French delicacies and, on a slightly less exotic level, a surname. The 24,665th most common surname in America, in fact, which is something I just knew and in no way did I Google it.
And now it’s a Defender 110.
First manufactured in 1988 and now manufactured again in 2025. That’s
because it’s the latest piece of work to emerge from Legacy Overland, a company that doesn’t just tart up old 4x4s – it remakes them from scratch, bringing them up to today’s standards as it goes and adding whatever luxuries and amenities its customers want.
These are, needless to say, vehicles that are built to order.
‘Project Bordeau started with a clear vision,’ says the company. ‘Transform a battle-worn 1988 Land Rover Defender 110 into a resilient and refined machine built to withstand the salty air of coastal life – without sacrificing comfort, character or craftsmanship.’
The salty air of coastal life has done a job on many a Land Rover down the years, so this is a taller order than it sounds. And it sounds tall. Sure enough, to quote Legacy Overland,
‘the brief was simple in spirit but complex in execution.’
That brief was to build a Defender ‘that’s as tough as it is tailored.’ My old 90’s timing belt jumped a tooth during the night when it was parked up once, and similarly one of its CV joints disintegrated while I slept, and then of course there was that time where its R380 gearbox did the R380 gearbox thing and I needed a whole new transmission. I would certainly have argued on those occasions that it was as tough as it was tailored, and it was about as tailored as a manky old plimsoll with a turd in it, but don’t let’s forget that this one has been manufactured all over again.
‘From a full drivetrain reseal to custom and “all-out” upholstery, a premium sound system and a full
So many of the remanufactured (or just tarted up) 90s and 110s you see have huge new V8s engines in them. It’s a nice idea but in practice we’ve always found them pretty horrible to drive. It could be said that the old 2.5 petrol is at the opposite end of the scale, but it’s original, it’s simple and it works. It’s one of the most reliable engines Land Rover has ever used, too

Left: It would almost look naked without a NAS step on the rear crossmember. The same can be said for the NAS lights, which have come to make the traditional style dome lights look very old-fashioned indeed
Right: Going in search of the cleanest possible look at the front end, Legacy Overland’s designers went for a bumper with no fog lights in it – just like they all used to be when the 110 was new
exterior repaint in Coniston Green gloss, every decision was made to balance beauty and durability. Inside and out, Bordeau is an expression of Legacy Overland’s signature approach – rugged elegance, with every detail considered. Whether carving through dunes or parked in the shade of a dockside café, this Defender is ready.’
Quite a heroic claim, that. But this is a company that sets its standards high; we’ve featured a few of its builds in the past and if you’ve seen them, you’ll know what we’re on about. And it’s not just built to be a beach runner, this: it’s built to be the master of the sand.
You might be expecting a galvanised chassis to be writ large in the story, but in fact the 110 is still on its original frame. It might have been battleworn but it hadn’t suffered any mortal wounds or direct hits, so it was simply a case of cleaning it up and protecting it properly for battles yet to come.
Bolted on to it is something that ought to make you smile. So many poshed-up Defenders get ridiculous engines shoved under their bonnets, but this one is powered by the wonderfully simple, classic, Land Rover original 2.5 petrol. Not fast but it doesn’t need to be; the faster you go, the less time people have to see how cool you are.
The engine was fully rebuilt, of course, as were the gearbox and transfer case behind it. Both were removed, stripped down on the bench and put back together again with new synchros, bearings, gaskets and fluids, and of course the rear main was done too while they were out. Same deal with the axles, with the diffs being rebuilt, as were the brakes. You can pretty up an old 90 or 110 while leaving it very ugly indeed beneath the surface, and we all know the sort of outfits who do that, but these guys do it properly. It’s not a ‘new’ Land Rover as such, but with everything about it being fully renewed – to modern standards, and indeed to high standards – it’s probably better than that.
It’s definitely posher than a new Defender ever was, with a custom interior featuring diamond-stitched
beige and black leather on the seats and cubby lid. The same beige (a Lexus colour) appears on the sun visors and a variety of dash inserts, where it contrasts with more of the black variety – it’s lavish but not overdone, with a sense of restraint
that’s painfully absent on some of the treatments you see. Add in a woodrimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel, white faced gauges and billet ali knobs, pedals and switchgear and you’ve got a cabin that’s classy but not crass. Just the way a nice Defender should be.

We’re on Facebook: www.facebook.com/thelandyuk

The cabin has been dressed to impress without being taken to ridiculous extremes. The highlight is clearly the diamond-quilted leather
beige, though the wood-rimmed Moto-Lita steering wheel is pretty eye-catching too. The beige leather is also used on the
panel with white-faced gauges and chrome bezels, while between the front seats the
There’s more to it than just the pretty stuff, too, though. The door seals have been upgraded to help reduce wind noise and increase insulation. That diamond leather has been applied to new seats with OEM-spec foam inserts. The speedo has been changed for one that shows the right speed. On an old 110, it’s not abnormal for the needle to jive around all over the place, if it moves at all, but none of that here.
There’s no shortage of electrical work that’s gone into it, too, not least
for the hefty Marshall amp that’s mounted in the cubby box. The speaker facing on the front of the unit looks tremendously purposeful – a real statement of intent. The intent being to cruise along some sun-kissed seafront somewhere with the canvas rolled up, the Beach Boys cranked up to max and literally thousands of tanned lovelies in bikinis all throwing themselves at you. And how could they fail to be attracted, when your Land Rover’s rolling on 265/70R17 Cooper
Discoverer STT Pros and black steel modulars, rocking its glorious Coniston Green gloss finish and looking smooth with the all black grille, cage, sills, canvas and so on that very much give the impression of a guy who’s way too cool for chrome. Trying hard to impress is for people who, well, have to.
Now, you read The Landy because you’re interested in Land Rovers and you’re interested in them because you like going places, not showing off on beaches. And it’s fairly obvious that

even though this 110 comes across like it doesn’t have to try too hard, it does that because whoever commissioned it wanted everyone to know that they don’t, either. Personally, I’m imagining it with signal yellow paint instead of green and oxblood red leather instead of beige, which maybe says that I do have to try too hard, but then there’s a reason why whoever put their money down for it could afford to and I can’t. Besides, it’s just damn cool the way it is. It makes me think of what a Wolf
would look like in a James Bond tux, and there’s not a lot cooler than that. And when the owner slides that billet ali transfer lever forward, knocks it to the left and lets those big Coopers claw their way over the sort of terrain only the coolest vehicles in the world can dare to tackle, it’ll remind everyone who’s watching that for all the muted bling, it’s still absolutely the real thing too. It may sound like a fine wine with a letter knocked off the end, but this 110 is definitely not missing the X factor.
