How are you feeling?

At the close of 2022 most of us were in an aftermath of exhaustion from adjusting to a renewed pace through 2022. We went into the new year period expecting a little reprieve from it all, but did we really get it?

For many of us, the pressures of running a business and managing staff, as well as the time associated with doing so, has dramatically increased. In order to live a happy life with a bit of balance, we now need to set a new and unprecedented level of boundaries.

It was through these thoughts about boundaries over the break that I really began to think about my own, quickly realising in both a personal and professional sense that I let mine greatly slip in order to please everyone beyond myself. Boundaries are even harder to set now as they have become a blend of larger and more complex personal and professional challenges. I’m not sure about you, but have you also found this to be more necessary than ever even in friendships, where perhaps before we never thought we would need to set boundaries?

Well, this is your year to minimise the stress and anxiety in your life by being more clear on your boundaries and communicating those with staff, friends and in interpersonal relationships or with partners. When we let a lot go, we also open space for a lot more that can serve. Despite my lack of structure around setting boundaries and my infallible quality of saying ‘yes’ to too many things, I have often been in two minds about boundaries. For most of my life I have also viewed them as being restrictive and a means of closing yourself off to opportunity and that frivolity associated with those serendipitous moments I love so much. You know that night you have that’s totally unexpected but that’s one of your best? If I was firm on boundaries, I would have finished it a lot earlier than it did, but the reality for me is where the energy easily flows and grows, your opportunity follows.

What I have learnt, however, is that you can still go with the flow and have a good time while simultaneously having clear boundaries in practice. This is something I have acknowledged I need to work on in 2023. The summarised version is to stop giving way too much energy to situations that deserve much less. I need to remind myself that my boundaries and mental health are much more important than my career, a bank balance and other people’s opinions. If taking care of yourself means letting someone down, then let them down.

Beyond the negative and positive of each passing month, every situation that happens to us is an opportunity for growth, every negative experience is a chance for us to set a higher expectation or create a benchmark for improvement. While I personally have never had a New Year’s resolution, I don’t deny that the start of the year is a great time to plan some key events, education, holidays or milestones in your year so you can realistically achieve them and ultimately let fewer people down by setting clear expectations and boundaries early on.

Plan aside some time for education at our inaugural gathering of hair in June (Hair Festival), plan a trip to Europe just after, take some quality time with your family and make sure you are showing up not just physically but also emotionally in relationships.

If the last few years has taught us anything it’s to be genuine in our meaning and connections, ensure our words match our actions and to not be scared of being vulnerable.

We need to love our everyday before we can love our bigger picture lives. If we can’t find love in our daily practice in business, in salon or in our lives then we are only utilising half of our potential. Love can sometimes be our biggest distraction but, if celebrated personally and professionally, it is our greatest asset-build a peace with love and you will never feel lost or lonely a day in your life.

The commitment that comes from a deep happiness is contagious, so surround yourself with people on missions, people more focused on 2030 than today, people who obsess, give and create, people with insatiable curiosity. However, you can’t just find them. You build something and they find you.

A clear boundary just might open up some of your biggest opportunities of all.

DYSON COMMIT HALF A BILLION POUNDS TO HAIR AND BEAUTY INNOVATIONS AND RESEARCH

TECHNOLOGY CONGLOMERATE DYSON

a billion pounds (that’s almost $900 million AUD) to hair and beauty innovation, in a four-year investment that will facilitate the opening of new hair research labs and the development of 20 new products in this space.

Dyson has been innovating in hair care and styling for six years, since the brand launched the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer, culminating a decade of research into the hair’s structure, airflow dynamics and the effect of thermal, mechanical and chemical damage. They’ve since revolutionised the market with launches such as the Dyson Airwrap™multi-styler and Dyson Corrale™ straightener, with further launches to come.

As well as launching new innovations, Dyson will also release the results of the company’s most comprehensive hair research study, to gain new insights into hair types, styling behaviours and perceptions of hair types and hair health around the world.

Comprehensive research and engineering take place at Dyson’s four Technology Campuses, where 6,000 engineers and scientists have access to hundreds of laboratories for rigorous testing, in the pursuit of truly understanding hair and healthier ways to style it. Machinery that includes scanning electron microscopes, thermal cameras and airflow laser smoke machines help engineers better understand the impact of hair damage, global hair types and the effects of high-speed airflow within these studies.

Understanding consumer habits is paramount to Dyson, leading the brand to create one of the largest global hair studies, which investigates hair health, hair perceptions and habits, and attitudes towards hair styling across 23 markets, including Australia, by studying 23,000 people. Gaining specific insights into different hair types is a crucial focus going forward, as Dyson continues to diversify its technology offering.

Key findings in Dyson’s ongoing research so far give insights into forms of damage and how to achieve healthy hair, as well as hair styling and care routines, especially as they have manifested through changing routines in the pandemic and as consumers have returned to more regular schedules. www.dyson.com.au

DANNY PATO WINS BRITISH FELLOWSHIP INTERNATIONAL IMAGE OF THE YEAR

THE BRITISH FELLOWSHIP Luncheon & Hair Awards were held in December 2022 to celebrate the very best of British creativity and business acumen in hairdressing, and a representative of our own AUSNZ community was honoured too. New Zealand’s prolific hairdresser Danny Pato of D&M Hair Design in New Zealand won the title of Fellowship International Image of the Year.

SHOWPONY LAUNCH BRAND DOCUMENTARY

A NEW SHOWPONY

documentary launched on Tuesday 1 November 2022 with Showpony Founder and Global CEO Stephanie Mason at the helm.

The Showpony Brand Documentary tells the founding story of the pioneering Australian sustainable hair extension company, with the video taking viewers behind the scenes of the 14-year journey to build a brand that is now revolutionising the way professionals and consumers view hair extensions. The brand is available in 20 countries, including Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and Europe, with many more launches expected to come in 2023.

“For many years, it was difficult and there were many moments when I thought I was not going to get there. This brand documentary highlights where it all began, the ups and downs, and the hard work that goes on behind the scenes to create a premium product that I am now so proud to be sharing with the world,” Stephanie said.

“We want to help salons empower their clients who struggle with thinning hair, hair loss due to illness, those who are allergic to the chemical in colour or merely want a change without the commitment of cutting or colouring – there’s a simple solution to it all, and that’s with hair extensions,” Stephanie added. www.showponyaus.com.au

DAVINES PLANT TWO TREE NURSERIES IN PARTNERSHIP WITH THE REEF RESTORATION FOUNDATION

DAVINES HAVE ANNOUNCED that their partnership with The Reef Restoration Foundation has resulted in two tree nurseries planted in 2022. Each tree nursery collects coral colonies that have become loose in the reef, the coral is then tended to by the team at the Reef Restoration Foundation to ensure it can grow quicker free from parasite, predators and competitors until they are healthy enough to be placed back on the surface of the reef.

“The Davines tree is located at our R&D site at Fitzroy Island, near Cairns. This is where we installed the first ever coral nursery on the Great Barrier Reef in 2017 and it remains a critical site for us, despite establishing production nurseries at Hastings Reef and Moore Reef,” shared CEO of Reef Restoration Foundation, Ryan Donnelly

The brand’s continued commitment to regenerating and protecting the iconic Great Barrier Reef landmark defined its 2022 sustainable beauty campaign. In April of 2022, Davines Australia committed $2 for every sale of their specially designed Shampoo & Conditioner duo packs to the foundation to assist in the regeneration of the coral reef. www.myhaircare.com.au

It removes a wide range of heavy metals, minerals, pollution, chlorine, medications, and discolouring iron and copper deposits.

The treatment is comprised of the Broad-Spectrum Chelating Blend, which is a surfactant-free, ultra-potent broad spectrum chelating blend with Vitamin C rich Kakadu Plum Extract to penetrate down to the cortex and purify hair by removing stubborn build-up as if refreshes and soothes the scalp. It also includes Bis-Aminopropyl Diglycol Dimaleate, which is OLAPLEX’s Patented bondbuilding technology that relinks broken bonds found deep within the hair structure to dramatically improve hair health, strength and integrity.

Cos Sakkas wins British Hairdresser of the Year

Co-founder of Sachajuan, Sacha Mitic, made his way down under once again for a stunning breakfast event to showcase a brand whose simple and sleek packaging has stood the test of time.

Sacha and his team greeted media and content creators for a hair consultation and blow dry at Sydney’s Rogue Beauty offices a day before the event to ensure attendees’ hair was in pristine condition, the Sachajuan way.

Sacha and his team have enveloped European charm continually since the brand’s conception in 2002 with their worldwide success and launch. Sachajuan officially added Australia to the everexpanding list of countries in 2015 and, having expanded the brand in 30 countries around the world, Sacha now unveiled the next chapter with a new product set to hit shelves in the coming months. The Sachajuan Protective Hair Perfume Bois Noir will be launching via Rogue Beauty in May 2023.

The breakfast was hosted by Sachajuan’s Australian distributor Rogue Beauty at Sydney’s beautiful restaurant and event venue, The Butler. The indoor-outdoor greenery proved a picturesque setting for the ever-chic Swedish originating brand. Lush greenery, pot plants and mirrors adorned the event with the full product sweep on display for guests to test, smell, feel and take home in an exceptional gift bag. Sacha mingled with guests over mimosas and fresh morning canapes and snapped photos with the amply placed media wall.

Guests enjoyed a breakfast of fresh fruit, bagels, sweets and coffee as Sacha and his team, alongside Rogue Beauty’s Chris Hammond, held a panel discussion as they enlightened guests on their latest launches and the classic Scandi aesthetic that has its hold on trends worldwide.

The hair master mentioned how the brand originated with the idea of simplicity and functionality with the importance of using each product as a tool to manage all different hair types.

“I’ve been working with hair since 1978, so it’s been a long career and many different stages of hairdressing but, to me, it’s always been that products are used like a toolbox, we look at hair like a kind of material that we can actually manipulate on how to create texture, or make hair look shinier or add volume. It’s been a very natural extension as a professional of our work,” Sacha said.

“The products are an extension of the professional hairdresser’s tool kit and I think that makes a lot of sense that the Sachajuan products were inspired out of the evolution of styling techniques and the way that has progressed throughout the decades,” he added.

The event ushered in the next chapter in Sachajuan’s ever-evolving portfolio of professional haircare across the globe in classic Scandi style. For more information visit www.sachajuan.com.au

BEST IN BARBER

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS IN THE SECOND EVER AUSTRALIAN MODERN BARBER AWARDS.

The 2022 Australian Modern Barber Awards (AMBAs), the platform’s sophomore outing, announced their winners at Melbourne’s Plaza Ballroom on November 6, 2022, honouring the industry’s pioneers in the barber space, from individual talent, to barbershop owners, products and educators.

The platform was launched by Mocha Group in 2021 to highlight the very best in this ever-growing market, adding to the Australian Hair Industry Awards and Australian Beauty Industry Awards also run by this awards group.

After COVID moved the inaugural event online in 2021, this was the first time the industry was able to congregate in person to celebrate the awards. The event was MCed by community legend and award-winning educator Jules Tognini, alongside co-host Kellie Woodhead, Mocha Group Art Director, and included a gala-style meal and dynamic hair fashion show directed by Adam Williams. The show featured a special guest performance by Clara Fable, as well as a dance party DJ set, while the afterparty took place at Lumia Bar, Melbourne Casino.

The awards were announced in 14 categories focusing on varied aspects of the barber industry, and judged by an independent panel including media, PR and business specialists, international barbering icons and specialists in the barbering industry. The event was sponsored by Le Barberie, Wahl Professional, BaByliss PRO, American Crew, STMNT, Depot Male Tools, American Barber, Shortcuts, Excellent Edges, Mr Muk, Andis and Barbershop Magazine.

A huge congratulations to the barbers, businesses, educators and product leaders who won in their categories.

COLOUR CREATORS

Alfaparf Milano Professional hosted the Australian finals of their Next Color GenHairation Contest, held in Sydney at La Porte Studios to announce the winners and show off the finalists’ looks.

To make it to the national final, competitors needed to create a new colour formula using any of the Alfaparf Milano Professional colour ranges that are not currently found in the colour charts, in a formula that was mixed and applied to a swatch supplied by Alfaparf Milano Professional. The competition saw a high volume of entrants, making for a difficult blind judging process that ended with a talented group of six finalists from Queensland, Victoria and New South Wales.

“This was a very difficult task as the entries were extremely creative,” shared the brand’s National Technical Coordinator, Lori D’Agostino. “Colours needed to have a commercial and wearable element.”

The event proceedings began with a presentation from Anthony Nasso, General Manager of Sales and Marketing for Alfaparf Milano Professional, who stated that the Next Color GenHairation Contest was designed to reward the creative and artistic skills of competitors, showcasing their ability to be expressive and to create something with the potential to be a new colour released into the Alfaparf Milano Professional colour ranges.

The judging panel including the Alfaparf Milano Professional Australian Global Ambassador and Creative Director Bill Tsiknaris, International Technical Manager Vivica Davies, National Technical Coordinator Lori D’Agostino,

David Mannah from M Division and Jo Cowan, INSTYLE, Styleicons and Hair Festival National Sales Director. A live hair show at the event was the final part of the competition.

“Judging was extremely tough as the competitors’ participants were beautifully presented,” Bill said. “All competitors should be extremely proud of their work and colours.”

Competitors presented and explained their colour choice once judging was completed. Looks included a modern mahogany blonde tone from Renee Rodriguez from Zenit Hairdressing, Picton, and a bold and bright blue shade as a total form of self expression, by Ally Woods from V & Co. Hair Beauty Bar, Penrith.

Melissa Gafa form Studio 206, Windsor created a blended natural cool tone in a wearable shade of blonde, while Kelsey Tuihalangingie from Hairpare, Ipswitch mixed a combination of shades to create a new warm and vivid purple hue. Nerida Sibilia from Serge Videl, Hawthorn created a smokey lilac haze look.

Finally, Bianca Bakas from Hair Frankie Grace, Thornbury was inspired by an 80s song by Prince, creating a vivid and timeless raspberry tone with this inspiration and winning for her look. Bianca and her participant will now fly to London to compete in the global final, which coincides with Salon International and the Alternative Hair Show. The winning colour selected by the panel of international judges will become a new shade in the Alfaparf Milano Professional colour range and published on the official colour chart. The winner will also participate in watching the creation of

an Alfaparf Milano Professional colour collection, backstage.

Well done to all the finalists and good luck to Bianca on the next phase of her journey!

AUSSIE, AUSSIE, AUSSIE!

AUSTRALIA’S OWN CLAUDIA CATALDO HAS TAKEN HOME THE GLOBAL L’ORÉAL PROFESSIONNEL STYLE & COLOUR TROPHY TITLE, MAKING AUSTRALIA’S CURRENT RECORD IN THIS INTERNATIONALLY PRESTIGIOUS COMPETITION A CONSECUTIVE HATTRICK, WRITES SHANNON GUSS.

Australia’s phenomenal global success at the International L’Oréal Professionnel

Style & Colour Trophy has continued with aplomb, as Claudia Cataldo from Cataldo’s Salon, Canberra, Australia’s national Style & Colour Trophy winner, has taken home the international title for 2022. She is the third Australian representative in a row to win.

“It was a very exciting and proud moment in my career and definitely a career highlight,” Claudia shared. “To represent Australia on a global level was something I had only dreamed of, I’m just so pleased it turned out so well. I’m still in shock and overwhelmed, it’s been so exciting for myself, my team, the industry and for Australia to win three times in a row. I’m elated, it’s a dream come true.”

The winners were announced in a format that returned to its live show roots in France, where finalists travelled to Paris to compete for the title on the world stage. The show was also streamed on social media and in a dedicated episode of Run Le Hair Show, the international web series by and for professionals.

Other medallists in the globally renowned and legendary hair competition included Lisa Saccio from Germany in second place and a tie for third place between PinHui Chen from Taiwan and Kelly Manu from New Zealand.

Claudia is a nationally acclaimed hairdresser with over 17 years industry experience, and is well-known as the Creative Director of Cataldo’s Salon, which is a family run Canberra institution for three generations.

“I wouldn’t be here if it weren’t for my family and I’m grateful for my grandfather who started the business and chose this as his career. Without the sacrifice he made to come to Australia and execute his dream we wouldn’t be here today, so I owe so much to all the hard work from him, as well as my dad, my uncle and my auntie, and all that they’ve done in their career and what they’ve given back to the industry. It’s now my time to pay it forward with my cousins Lauren and Michael, the world’s our oyster. To the whole team, we’ll keep pushing and driving and they can do this too, hopefully I won’t be the last in our

team or with the Cataldo name to achieve this,” Claudia said. Making history for our national industry, she marks the third successive victory for Australia on this international platform, following Massimo Tirimacco from Zohair, South Australia, who won in 2021, and Wendy Gunn from Ink for Hair in Queensland, who won in 2019.

L’Oréal Professionnel Paris Style & Colour Trophy offers a major platform to hairdressers around the world, to inspire and catapult its winners into stardom. Celebrating the artistry and skill of hair, it encourages hairdressers to push their creative boundaries and, for the past two years, has been available to everyone within the hairdressing industry, no matter their level of expertise or years of experience, further expanding its capacity to motivate talent. This year’s participants were judged on their looks in the theme of French Edito: Gloss and Balayage looks. The winner announcement streamed on social media in the early hours of December 13 and highlighted the significance of the competition in a special episode of Run Le Hair Show.

“The sky’s the limit with what this will do for my career. Who knows what will come of it but hopefully more opportunities to train and educate, like I do here in the salon but on a broader scale,” Claudia shared. “I’m passionate about the next generation, and training emerging stylists and people who are passionate and love this career. I want to give back to all the people who have done that for me.”

Congratulations to Claudia on this huge achievement and cementing Australia’s place at the forefront of global artistry and in the legendary history of this famous competition. LOOK, LEARN AND LUNCH

AN EXCLUSIVE JOICO EVENT PUT THE FOCUS ON TECHNICAL EDUCATION, BUSINESS ADVICE AND A LUXURY LUNCH.

Sabre Haircare hosted an exclusive JOICO VIP event at the Opal Suite at The Crown Sydney, overlooking Barangaroo. Inviting 25 top JOICO partner salons who flew in from around Australia and New Zealand for the festivities, the agenda was headlined by a look and learn by JOICO Global Artistic Director, Richard Mannah, an intimate Q&A with Richard and JOICO’s Education Manager for Australia and New Zealand, Duncan Richards, and a five-star, three-course luxury luncheon courtesy of The Crown.

Richard is renowned for his editorial accolades, including winning the title of London Hairdresser of the Year, credits for publications such as Vogue, Elle, and Grazia and backstage experience at New York Fashion Week, London Fashion Week and more, through which he’s accumulated over two decades of industry practice. He took on the title of Global Artistic Director for Joico in 2018 and is well-known for his on stage charisma and expertise in this role, which was on full display at the VIP event.

The morning began with champagne, seasonal fruit and cheese platters to welcome guests, who were able to mingle and network with JOICO’s Australian and New Zealand ambassadors. This relaxed atmosphere carried through the day.

The proceedings then included two hair

presentations by Richard in the look and learn, with a multi-dimensional violet look transformed in the room through cut and style, into what Richard calls the “layered flick”, as built with three disconnections for a versatile, curved shape. The second look was glamorous long hair waves to showcase varied hair lengths, with Richard providing the finishing touches in the room.

JOICO Colourist Carolyn Gahan and Sabre Haircare Educator Carley Canham talked through the formulas and inspiration for both colour looks. The first bold look was titled Dusty Millennial Pink, the amalgamation of bright pinks into lavender tones to suit the layers and movement of the cut, as created by both colourists. The second colour look, created by Carolyn, used the combination of a subtle money piece in the fringe to connect seamlessly through the surface with highlights through to the longer layers, all effortlessly merged into what was titled the Smokey Blend.

As Richard created the looks, he took questions from the intimate gathering

and offered unparalleled and pertinent insights. From a technical perspective, he spoke about creating shape and how short cutting techniques and transformations are becoming very popular in salon and on social media. Instructing on the importance of taking the time to map out haircuts, he built techniques like the mullet into the first cut to showcase the way trends are coming back around in fresh ways.

Building on his social media expertise, he discussed the power of video and reels and described content as currency. He motivated guests to think young, be adaptable and constantly pivot to stay relevant. In universal lessons for attendees, he spoke about the significance of consultations, no matter how long you’ve been cutting that client’s hair and taught to communicate with clients visually and gauge from their fashion sense. In broader artistic insights, he highlighted the significance of disciplined foundational techniques and how important it is to work with the hair, not against it, ensuring cuts are more seamlessly maintained for clients.

The Q&A with Duncan then touched on some of these points in greater detail, as Richard answered questions about career highlights, must-have products and much more. Outlining his major editorial tips and tricks, Richard also gave his advice in avoiding burn out and finding balance and talked about his travels in learning to work with diverse hair textures. He likened working with different textures to working with versatile fabrics, and explained how educational it is for hairdressers to expand their knowledge in this way.

Ending with a three-course lunch where guests enjoyed lavish dishes, picked from multi-coloured macaroons and discussed the dynamic presentations they had just witnessed, it was the ideal way to motivate the brand’s top partners for the busy season ahead.

ROYALTY

ON SUNDAY OCTOBER 30, 2022, ROYALS HAIR HOSTED THEIR ANNUAL SALON AWARDS FOR 2022, HONOURING THEIR TALENTED HAIRDRESSERS AND GROWING TEAM WITH A CREATIVE HALLOWEEN THEMED EVENING, WRITES CAMERON PINE .

With a strong sense of salon community permeating every aspect of the Royals brand, their completely immersive education space was transformed into a Halloween playground – the perfect opportunity to learn and further cement camaraderie within the organisation in an unparalleled awards night.

The Royals salon business, with four Sydney locations to its name, is owned and operated by Mary and Adam Alamine, with some locations co-owned and cooperated by Travis Bandiera and Hamza Alamine, as well as a dedicated education facility and annual program. Royals has well and truly set the benchmark for multiple salon engagement.

“The idea behind the awards night is to recognise our team’s incredibly individual talents and achievements as well as just simply showing them that we appreciate their contribution to the brand’s success,” said Royals Hair Owner and Director, Mary Alamine.

“This has always been a cornerstone of how we do things at Royals. Our team are at the heart of our business. Many of them have been with us from the very beginning, back in 2007, and we love showing them how grateful we are,” she said.

Fittingly held the night before Halloween, the dynamic salon teams took the creative direction one step further with a Vampire themed awards night with beautifully presented catered food, drinks and, of course, a DJ.

“The night was a lot of fun with each winner taking home incredible prizes thanks to O&M, ghd, Haircare Australia and Ozdare. It really added to the fun of the night it was a wild celebration for all,” Mary said.

Comprised of eight awards categories from newcomer to transformation, including a category for video content, Royals has continued to progress its platform to suit upcoming trends and the varying strengths of stylists.

As the night progressed, what started as a Halloween themed awards night quickly turned into an Arabian night that included a belly dancing competition with everyone dancing on stage and partying late into the night.

Mary Alamine’s dedication to hairdressing is an enchanted mix of business acumen and authentic artisan abilities and, with a commitment to the craft that spans more than 20 years, Mary has continued to garner an unfaltering commitment to education, which is reflected throughout the entire salon network.

The very first salon was opened in Castle Towers in the heart of Northwest Sydney’s Castle Hill. With a distinctly Moroccan boutique feel and attitude, Royals has

been able to thrive and grow thanks to an obsessive dedication to perfection and a consistent education platform for all of their stylists. Following the success of the Castle Hill salon, they opened a salon in Hornsby in 2011 followed by Cherrybrook and, more recently, a salon in Brookvale in Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

“The Royals team live and breathe all facets of the hairdressing industry every day, from education to salon work – our academy has been set up to ensure every Royals staff member and the greater industry is taught by the best and remains the gold standard in hair,” Mary said.

Recognising the best in all aspects of staff culture and salon performance, Royals continues to lead with fun and frivolity.

Congratulations to the award winners! For more information visit www.royalshair.com.au

SHOWCASE

INDUSTRY LEGENDS DEE PARKER ATTWOOD AND CHARLENE FERNANDEZ MENTORED FOR BOX HILL INSTITUTE AS PART OF A MASTERCLASS AND SHOWCASE, PRESENTING THE UNIQUE OPPORTUNITIES POSSIBLE IN THE EDUCATION INSTITUTE’S PARTNERSHIP WITH JOBS VICTORIA

Two hairdressing industry leaders, Dee Parker Attwood and Charlene Fernandez, recently presented and mentored at Box Hill Institute, showcasing a masterclass of four looks and offering dynamic opportunities to the students.

Box Hill Institute supports students through a certificate III in Barbering (SHB30516) or certificate III in hairdressing (SHB30416), partnering with Jobs Victoria to attract more students to the profession, and offering education experiences like this to elevate the vocation and craft even further. The learning institute has created a highly engaging, immersive training program exclusively for the students, with unique experiences at its core.

The latest masterclass was in this theme, and saw Dee create a demonstration of four of the latest hair looks from Brisbane’s fashion week runway, followed by a practical class where 37 students attempted to recreate one of the four looks each. Dee and Charlene then chose eight students to participate in the Box Hill Institute Showcase in October at Alto Event Space. This pinnacle industry event hosted some of Melbourne’s best salon owners, stylists, apprentices and various industry stakeholders, proving to be a significant

opportunity for everyone involved.

The Showcase also allowed time to celebrate some of the program’s recent successes and the hair industry at large. It also presented a special hair show highlighting Dee and other talented hairdressers’ work.

Box Hill Institute’s partnership with Jobs Victoria will continue until June 2023, and supports students by covering student course fees, giving them additional resources such as a hairdressing kit, uniforms and Pivot Point Educational materials and contributing to important

experiences like this one. The initiative also ensures hairdressers and barbers complete two weeks of pre-training before starting employment, with students connecting with a respected industry figure as a mentor to help get job-ready and placed within the industry. This makes for a more seamless and simpler path from studying to employment.

DUET

GHD’S GAME-CHANGING NEW LAUNCH OFFERS WET TO STYLE TECHNOLOGY WITH NO DAMAGE, UNPRECEDENTED SOFTNESS AND SO MUCH MORE. MEET THE NEXT REVOLUTION IN HAIR – THIS IS GHD DUET STYLE.

Ghd’s styling technology has been changing the game in hair for 21 years, and its latest launch may be the most significant breakthrough yet. ghd’s first-ever two in one air styler, titled duet style, has launched to achieve what was once thought impossible, utilising the company’s significant experience to combine the science of convection and conduction into bold AIRFUSION™ technology, the science that anchors the all-new tool.

The savvy tool transforms hair from wet to style with no damage, as AIRFUSION™ technology brings together the power of air flow and the performance of actively heated styling plates to create sleek, smooth, glossy, instantly frizz-free style, with two times the shine and 48 hours of hair softness as a major result. The unique ghd styling chamber merges internal airflow aerodynamics with four smart low-temperature plates, to dry and style hair simultaneously, improving both styling time and hair results.

“We are dedicated to developing pioneering technologies and creating the best- in-class products that tackle consumer and professional stylist needs,” said Jeroen Temmerman, ghd CEO. “The new ghd duet style is a revolution in tech beauty, there is no other product globally that dries and styles at the same time,

combining hot air and styling plates. The ghd R&D team have achieved the impossible. With ghd duet style we are transforming the way women style their hair and delivering even more good hair days around the world.”

Stylists and consumers can use the tool on freshly cleansed wet hair and simply glide the tool down from the root to ends to dry and style. The Shine Shot mode transforms the tool in the touch of a button into a ghd styler with no airflow, working at the brand’s usual optimal temperature of 185°C to style hair that is, at that point, already dry.

The hero AIRFUSION™ technology is comprised of five elements. The original air filter design allows for maximum airflow to be drawn into the styler, ensuring the capacity to powerfully dry and style simultaneously. The airflow is then propelled by an ultra-compact brushless digital motor delivering a precise air speed that passes through a heater to reach the optimal styling temperature without damaging the hair.

The drying and styling chamber is an air grille that works in synergy with the plates to dry the hair, while the four smart styling plates utilise infinity sensors to predict the hair’s needs and the optimal low styling temperature required, to retain

28 INSTYLE INFEATURE

moisture in the hair. Finally, expertly angled root drying vents concentrate the airflow inside the chamber to direct outwards at an even lower temperature that ideally styles and dries the roots.

“Following years of research at the dedicated ghd R&D labs in Cambridge, we have utilised our deep knowledge of hair science to understand the complex interaction that hair has with water, heat, air and styler grip,” explained Dr Rob Milner, ghd CTO. “This research has been integral for the creation of AIR-FUSION™ technology, the breakthrough technology in duet style. Many styling routines over-dry or over-heat hair, but AIR-FUSION™ technology in duet style retains the natural moisture level of hair, providing a long-lasting style without causing damage.”

This scientific breakthrough also boasts an eco-friendly design, while still always prioritising power, efficiency and aesthetics. The tool utilises eco-friendly aerodynamics to minimise energy waste for up to 45 per cent less energy consumption. It also has a lower sound with a bespoke acoustic system that manages volumes and refines the styling experience for a quieter salon.

“ghd and innovation goes hand in hand. It’s been so long since I’ve seen hair tech innovation like the new ghd duet style, it is going to truly change the way we style hair,” shared ghd Global Brand Ambassador, Adam Reed.

The tool has been launched alongside the new ghd sleek talker styling oil, which was developed in conjunction with duet style to become the ultimate power couple. The wet to sleek styling oil encompasses heat protection that aids in smoothing, softening and replenishing hair, while also maximising heat styling performance for long-lasting professional results. The product is made with the advanced formula ghd heat protection system for a sleek finish that offers 25 per cent longer-lasting frizz control elevated from the when duet style is used alone, with four times more hair alignment against naturally dried hair.

SHE’S BEAUTIFUL

SPLASHED IN GREEN AND BURGUNDY AND JUXTAPOSED BY DETAILS FROM LIGHTING TO TEXTURE, SALON HER IS AN ECLECTIC CREATIVE SPACE WHERE HIGH-FASHION MEETS HIGH-COMFORT, WRITES CAMERON PINE

The career-long vision of celebrated colourist, Michael Kelly, Salon HER combines almost two decades of hairdressing prowess and results in a space with an artisanal touch as masterful as his hands. A celebrated colour educator that’s travelled the globe, Michael’s vision for his salon is a representation of his style aesthetic and global travels but is also steeped in that quintessential style that defines some of his greatest work. We sat down with the Salon HER owner to find out just what creating this strikingly sophisticated salon entailed.

INSTYLE: HOW DID YOU CREATE AN INCLUSIVE ENVIRONMENT THROUGH LAYOUT AND DESIGN?

Michael Kelly: Salon HER was thoughtfully designed with not only the layout under careful consideration but also the textures of the materials, the warm and interesting colour palette and the ergonomic functions of the space. Our clients have moments to enjoy in the space, from a generously sized welcome desk to a friendly and familiar lounge area. We wanted to make that first experience one that felt more curated, slowed our clients down and allowed them to take a minute to gear change and lean into the Salon HER experience – the ideal space for both the expert and the guest.

IN: WHAT COLOUR TONES HAVE YOU CHAMPIONED? EXPLAIN THE USE OF EARTHY TONES AND GREEN AS A BASE? ARE THERE OTHER KEY COLOURS THAT WERE ESSENTIAL TO THE CREATION OF THE SPACE?

MK: I’m obsessed with green, especially when it comes to textiles and finishes, but the salon interior wasn’t where the green originated. When I was working with Paulina, my branding specialist, I gave her a colour palette I wanted to work with. It included colours like green, ochre and burgundy. Paulina was quick to move on these references and started to create an evolved palette that elevated my original vision. When we finished our

brand book I sent the completed product to my Interior Designer team for their considerations. They loved it and used the brand book as inspiration to curate a selection of unique and earthy but balanced in warmth tones to go for our interior selections.

IN: WERE THERE ANY PARTICULAR HOTELS, ERAS OR LANDMARKS YOU WERE INSPIRED BY IN THE CREATION OF THE SALON’S MOOD AND AESTHETIC?

MK: Yes and this was the easiest and the most fun part! I love interiors, I love travel and I’m very decisive, so gathering inspiration was easy to do. I took inspiration from chic hotel lobbies, intimate restaurants and people’s homes. Collectively they were my guiding light for the creative work involved in building a concept. Top tip - if you ever need inspiration, go to YouTube and watch the Architectural Digest series they offer where you get a guided tour through celebrity homes by the celebrity themselves.

IN: WHAT MATERIALS HAVE YOU CHOSEN FOR MAIN AREAS SUCH AS FLOORING, WALLS, CABINETRY, TABLES AND BENCHES, AND FOR WHAT REASONS?

MK: Everything was selected with juxtaposing contrasts in mind. I wanted a space that could potentially start or inspire a new age of salon individuality, something that felt globally inspired. Materials where sourced like the Italian terrazzo tiles that cover 70 per cent of the salon, and our walnut wooden flooring that is also consistent throughout the cabinetry and joinery for adding warmth and richness to the space. The marble benches and detailing were by surprise - our supplier accidentally sold our prepurchased slab to another customer and allocated us one that we hadn’t seen in person. Serendipitously we loved it and preferred the statement it makes after all.

I think the moments in the materials really come from how they all work together rather than individually how they sit alone. The vision was clear from the beginning and when you set the space in real life, it’s so incredibly beautiful, you just want to stay for hours. That was the idea for both our team of experts and clients.

IN: HOW HAVE YOU ELEVATED THE EXPERIENCE FOR THE CUSTOMER WHILE STILL KEEPING A RELAXED FEEL?

MK: The elevation in the experience is around redefining what luxury service in salons feels like. I’ve travelled the world and visited or worked in some of the most exclusive spaces on offer and

30 INSTYLE INFEATURE

my key takeaway from the ones that were the real deal was that they didn’t try too hard to be anything other than what they inherently are. Gone are the days of feeling like you have to behave a certain way to service in the luxury space. Clients crave connection, meaningful conversation and individuality. They want to see, hear and know the real person doing their hair and, at Salon HER, this is what’s most celebrated!

Allowing that expression for your team creates and fosters amazing harmony for the client experience. All the superficial elements of a beautiful interior and luxury products are well and truly lost if you don’t have the right energy in your space.

How our clients and my team feel when they arrive home to Salon HER really is the most important part for me. It’s something I’ll never be able to drop the ball on because it’s a natural instinct of mine to be aware of those around me and navigate their experience to best suit them and to best suit me.

IN: WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE NEW FEATURE OF THE SALON? IS THERE SOMETHING YOU’VE DONE YOU HAVEN’T SEEN ANYWHERE ELSE BEFORE?

MK: Recreating the wheel is impossible and I think when you try too hard it really becomes obvious that you’re probably over-compensating for something that maybe doesn’t hit the mark. For us at Salon HER, the real feature is the environment. It automatically feels familiar, it automatically feels like you’ve arrived home, it automatically feels like you belong.

However, to choose specifically it would be our generously sized welcome lounge, designed with a purpose in mind of giving the client a minute to come in and just breathe.

IN: HOW IMPORTANT WAS LIGHTING TO DIFFERENT SPACES IN THE SALON? HOW HAVE YOU MAXIMISED BOTH NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL LIGHT? EXPLAIN SOME OF THE LIGHT FITTINGS, STYLES AND TECHNOLOGY USED?

MK: Lighting is everything! We made sure we had the specialist electricians take into consideration the neutralisation of warm and cool lighting to create balance and harmony. We have LED track lighting around all mirrors so clients never feel intimated by making eye contact with themselves in the mirror. In turn this creates more connection between expert and client, when they both feel comfortable. We have a brighter, cleaner-lit area in one part of our space where content can be easily captured and the whole wall that runs the length of the salon is a huge window that is open to many different aspects of natural light

as the day goes by. We worked with the clever placement of pendant lamps, wall lamps and ornamental lamps to create different moods of lighting for our clients to enjoy.

All globes are dimmable to create storytelling in the salon and for capturing content when natural light isn’t always available. Making sure that all the globes are flicker-free when recording video content on your phone was also essential.

IN: WHERE DID YOU SOURCE FURNITURE AND ECLECTIC PIECES FOR THE SALON?

MK: Sourcing was worldwide. We have a lot of custom, repurposed and collected pieces. All of the artwork is from my personal collection and the styling props were hand selected by myself or my designer Mariah Madder. I maintained high visibility over the selects throughout the process.

From a salon perspective we specifically had salon furniture from Maletti and Comfortel, and back room colour merchandising was designed by TesselGrid. Ergonomic is the only way to go!

Mariah also sourced smaller pieces from local vintage makers and artists and some of the larger furniture pieces from local Australian brands. We included Australian brands like Studio Henry Wilson, House of Slim, Rachel Donath and NOMI.

IN: HOW HAVE YOU BROUGHT A LITTLE MORE FUN AND ENERGY TO THE SALON ENVIRONMENT?

MK: Allowing the team to be who they are with respect to the space they’re in ultimately leads to them being more energised, which means the team is always having fun together. I think when the team culture is strong and professional standards are always in consideration, the client experience is always high-level.

IN: WILL YOU SPECIALISE IN ANY PARTICULAR SERVICES?

MK: Our key message is that we are the home of transformative hair. In that message we are allowing our clients to make the most of their appointment and let it be whatever they need it to be. Whether it’s corrective colour work or simply a ritual treatment and an infused hot towel to slow right down, we will cater to the human needs of the client through working on and around their hair as the focus.

IN: WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO CREATE THIS SPACE AND WHY IS NOW THE PERFECT TIME IN YOUR CAREER TO OFFER A HAIRDRESSING HOME LIKE SALON HER?

Growth, it’s a perfect and wonderful thing. For almost two decades I’ve nourished, built, grown, systemised and enhanced other people’s brands that I’ve worked for. The time had come for me to put that same energy into me and my own personal brand. I am always wanting to level up and learn, so this experience was the next stage of my dedicated learning. There have been so many huge moments already and I’m only at the very beginning of my new chapter of salon ownership.

NOOSAVILLE

WELCOME THE LATEST ADDITION TO THE EDWARDSANDCO DYNASTY.

Industry juggernaut EdwardsAndCo has continued its prolific expansion by opening a ninth salon location in Noosaville, between Noosa Heads and Noosa Waters. Situated within some of the city’s most luxurious boutiques and restaurants, this new space adds to the salon brand’s dynasty of luxury, high profile salon destinations.

The space is operated by EdwardsAndCo founder Jaye Edwards and partner and Noosa local Amanda Stevens, becoming the first time Jaye has co-opened a space under the EdwardsAndCo brand.

“Knowing how well the brand is a fit for Noosa and how much demand there is for a premium salon offering, it seemed like the obvious next expansion point for EdwardsAndCo,” said Amanda. “Noosa has been crying out for a premium salon offering like EdwardsAndCo and based on the success of the Byron Bay and Gold Coast salons, Noosa was the obvious next step in the EdwardsAndCo expansion.”

The space features six basins, eight cutting chairs and a tenseater colour table, offering clients a full spectrum of beauty services. The space includes the iconic EdwardsAndCo design staples that are now famous for the brand, including full wall mural from internationally acclaimed artist Brian Connolly, which sits within the salon’s luxurious spaciousness and unique aesthetics. The salon is designed with a modern, monochromatic palette that complements the wall art.

The salon brings together inspiring hairdressing talented from around the country. The team will create EdwardsAndCo’s sparkling brunettes, famous curls, creamy blondes and textured beach waves, as well as their flagship Future Proof Hair Colour techniques, within the signature EdwardsAndCo looks. Through these skills and with pioneering education and a strong social media presence as well, EdwardsAndCo has developed a global cult following in style, service and aesthetic.

Adding to its already beloved locations in Sydney, Melbourne and Queensland, welcome the ninth important space for this unending salon force.

CASHLESS WITHOUT THE COST

be immediately plugged in to start. You can still keep your business bank accounts with your bank, making the whole process seamless.

“We were literally up and running in no time at all,” Rowena said. “We use the terminal just like our previous one. We simply punch in the amount, and everything else is automatic. The team think it’s great.”

As we move towards an increasingly cashless society, clients are paying in a different way – 48 per cent of Australians now pay for goods with their phones, with COVID triggering a 90 per cent increase in digital wallet payments, as indicated in Mastercard’s State of Pay Report, 2021. It’s a payment style your salon needs to adapt to without taking on an increase in EFTPOS charges, which can be expensive for all businesses, especially those paying variable rates per transaction. Enter Smartpay.

Smartypay offers a zero cost EFTPOS solution that allows merchants to automatically pass on their merchant fees and save on their EFTPOS bill, reducing costs, improving cash flow and elevating the salon’s savings in the process.

“For many years I was paying bank fees and, as I was growing, so were card payments,” shared Rowena, owner of Ron’s Barber Shop, one of the many salons and hair professionals in Australia that use Smartpay. “The banks were promoting going cashless, however, they were penalising me by charging me more fees. I think that’s unfair. When I heard about Zero Cost EFTPOS from a family member, I thought it was a great product and contacted Smartpay.”

“I know many of my customers personally, so notifying them was important,” Rowena shared. “I put signs up on the counter and advised them about the surcharge when they were paying. My customers truly understand the challenges small businesses face and have been very supportive. 99.9 per cent of customers have no issues at all.”

The simple process only requires the business to sign up and get a Smartpay machine delivered directly to their business, which can

“We are saving about $650 a month or $8000 a year,” Rowena added. “That has made a big difference to our cash flow, and I now have the funds to bring on an additional apprentice. Being able to create employment during these challenging times is something I feel especially good about.”

The system is run in Australia with personal assistance available 24/7 for any troubleshooting or questions. As an independent specialist, the company prides itself on the simplicity of its system, with an easy-to-use product that caters to all sectors, especially hairdressing.

Smartpay surveyed over 1000 merchants across Australia and New Zealand and found that only 20 per cent of SMEs (small and medium sized-enterprises) feel their business is back to pre-COVID conditions, meaning that finding ways to reduce costs is more important than ever. In Australia, 79 per cent of SMEs surveyed indicated that they are now embracing surcharging as a way of keeping prices competitive, while offering the same high level of service for their customers. Of those surcharging, a quarter of respondents also said they abandoned plans to increase their prices after turning to a zero-cost solution.

Other results show that 63 per cent of small and medium sized businesses surveyed had actively noticed an increase in clients supporting local businesses since COVID, suggesting that clients might be more open to embracing surcharges than you think.

Without the stress of additional EFTPOS costs and with a streamlined system to elevate your salon profits, you can focus on putting that time, energy and money back into your business for the best possible results.

MEET EPRES

A NEW NEXT GENERATION BOND REPAIR TREATMENT IS COMING TO AUSTRALIA, ELEVATING PROFESSIONAL SERVICES, AIDING THE ENVIRONMENT AND FIGHTING HAIR DAMAGE. THIS IS EPRES.

Welcome epres, a new revolution in haircare, built as a next generation bond repair treatment, founded by Dr Eric Pressly Ph.D., the scientist behind Olaplex. The range boasts simple, quick results with low prices for salons, in a range that offers one professional and one retail product.

Formulated from the mantra of “credible science, incredible results”, epres is a unique one step bond repair process that is simple and easy to use, importantly acid free, so as not to disturb the pH of any chemical services, and that promises faster results with the epres patent-pending technology. The technology also includes Biodiffusion™, where it continues to repair even after the hair is dry.

Anchored by the science of Dr Pressly, who holds more than 100 patents in bond-repair technology, epres is touted as his most crucial scientific advancement yet.

“I was a scientist with a broad background, so I wanted to find my next adventure,” Dr Pressly said. “I got hit with a wave of creativity being locked up in a small space in COVID, and part of that wave of creativity led to this brand.”

The system re-bonds the structure of the hair with maximum efficacy, working to repair chemical, thermal and mechanical damage in one simple, acid-free step. This is built from a performance-first, scientifically led beauty company that is focused on disrupting and sustaining technologies in haircare, also titled epres. The company is dedicated to the values of creating cutting-edge solutions for all hair types, emboldening salon professionals and elevating healthy hair.

The epres technology was developed to treat damaged hair, catering to clients who have been affected by chemical, colour or heat processes, with components that can repair broken bonds to increase hair’s strength and softness and decrease breakage and frizz. Patent-pending molecular technology repairs disulfide bonds to form the internal structure of hair during the salon service, with no change in colour or development time.

The technology elevates the salon experience, bettering the work and results of professional hairdressers and offering another incentive to visit the salon and service opportunity to clients. An easy, spray-on treatment carries the service on at home.

Importantly, the products are all acid free, quat free, vegan and cruelty free, phosphate free, gluten free, paraben free, phthalate free, preservative free, nut free, PEG free, formaldehyde free, sulphate free, thiol free and fair trade, while garnering top-tier results.

“We’re a trustworthy, science-led brand. So, what we say we can do, we prove it, and we do it. We make claims about being the

best in the space, and you can back it up with the performance of the product. It’s the best bond builder,” Dr Pressly said. “A lot of damage that people have is from bleaching in the salon, and if you can stop it before it starts, then you’re in a much better position to deal with it going forward.”

Dr Pressly’s experience in pursuing a Ph.D. in materials science and his work in developing life-saving pharmaceuticals led to his innovations in bond-building haircare. epres is powered by cutting-edge chemistry to offer scientifically advanced haircare solutions in patented, professional-grade formulas that are easy to use, high-performance and considerate of the environment.

The brand’s two tools begin with the Professional Bond Repair for salon use, which works for all hair types and services in a patented formula that delivers flexibility and performance. The product doesn’t affect the pH of the chemical service, ensuring no unwanted side effects, and is built with epres’ liquid actives and Biodiffusion technology that continues to work even when hair is dry. Hairdressers can simply add it to their service formulas and mix and process as usual, ensuring more revenue and results with no extra time.

The Bond Repair Treatment is an innovative spray-on hair treatment that ensures deep, lasting repair, strength and health for those with chemical, thermal, and mechanical damage, as a retail option. The acid-free, patent-pending formula actively rebonds hair’s structure and continues to diffuse the hair for hours after application with Biodiffusion™ technology, as used once or twice a week.

Clients laud the products for their simplicity and environmental consciousness, as a game changer against split ends and to ensure soft, shiny and strong hair. Consumers also love the packaging and vegan and acid-free formulas, while celebrating the technology’s work for curly hair and against heat and chemical damage.

“The epres Bond Repair Treatment went beyond my expectations in regard to repairing and restoring my hair,” a review read. “Its contents had an immediate effect on my hair once I sprayed it on, and it left my hair beautiful, manageable and soft to the touch, while providing volume. This product is amazing and of great performance and easy to apply and use.”

“I'm actually shocked by the results I got so far from this Bond Repair Treatment. I really appreciate how easy and straightforward the instructions were. I instantly saw how beautiful and shiny my hair became, as well as very soft and healthy looking,” added another review.

EXTEND YOURSELF

THE CELIQUE PROFESSIONAL RANGE OF HAIR EXTENSIONS FOLLOWS THE BRAND’S COMMITMENT TO PROFESSIONAL, QUALITY PRODUCTS THAT REVOLUTIONISE THE SALON SPHERE.

Australian-owned Celique Professional is a professionalled product company with salon experience at its very core. Run by the team behind the famous Christiane’s Hair Design, which has been a thriving salon business since 1984 with 25 locations across new South Wales, the talented team have utilised those incomparable decades of experience to create products and tools that truly work for hairdressers and clients.

Alongside their offering of keratin, care and style products, the brand has launched a range of hair extensions to cater to the professional industry. The hair extensions come in 24-inch sizing, and the brand smartly sells in half head packs as they have found in their salon that clients sometimes only want partial extensions and are therefore paying for hair they don’t use. This means that clients who require a full head of extensions would purchase two packets of hair. The extensions are available via tape application.

The extensions are lightweight and sit naturally on the head to reduce uneven tension and perfectly cater to those with fine or thinning hair without stressing the original hair. The product can be used to seamlessly add thickness, volume and length by being easily blended in and styled.

This adaptable, experience-led products shows the value of the Celique Professional way. The brand was created with salontested products to ensure quality and client satisfaction, parlaying decades of experience into pioneering product care. The brand proudly utilises ecological, sustainable ingredients and in their production processes for nourishing, healthy and thoughtful products across their portfolio.

Adding to the versatile Celique Professional suite of products, the brand’s Just In One product can be used from mid-lengths to ends to ideally care for the extensions and keep the hair looking healthy. The product can especially be used when the client has been out in the sun or swimming, as it re-introduces moisture back into hair and the extensions without making them feel too heavy.

Made to inspire the hairdresser and delight clients, beautiful, healthy hair is at the forefront of Celique Professional, continuing Christiane’s Hair Design’s commitment to trending, ever-growing and high-quality service. The latest range of hair extensions fits the portfolio perfectly.

LITTLE ITALY

CELIQUE

PROFESSIONAL’S KERATIN OFFERING IS AUSTRALIAN OWNED AND ITALIAN MADE, COMBINING THE BEST FACETS OF STORIED LOCAL EXPERIENCE AND LUXURY INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT.

The Keratin technology from Celique Professional has been on the market for two years, transforming the industry with a product that’s made in Italy by the country’s renowned hairdressers and chemists for a truly tailored product. The technology is formaldehyde and cruelty free, in keeping with the brand’s sustainable, ecological values in their product creation, processes and ingredients.

The Keratin treatment leaves the hair smooth, shiny, frizz-free and with reduced split ends, for an overall healthier look. It also helps to strengthen the hair and lessen the chance of breakage to aid in hair growth. The technology can be applied to damp hair, saving 15 to 25 minutes of service time in salon and aiding salons in boosting their bottom line with quicker service turnarounds. The clients will also save time, as the treatment cuts future styling time in half because it ensures that hair retains less moisture than usual.

Alongside this Keratin technology, Celique Professional offers a keratin-infused, paraben free shampoo and conditioner for longer lasting results and to keep hair looking lustrous, smooth and shiny. These products are part of an extensive offering of care and style products that cater to individual hair needs as necessary. Other products include shampoo and conditioner options for moisture, colour, blonde, dandruff and more, as well as mask and treatment options.

“Since using Celique Professional Keratin Treatment, my existing colour clients are having this as an add on to their normal colour service as it’s so fast and the results have been amazing. It is definitely my go to with salon treatments," said Alexa, Senior Stylist at Christiane’s Hair Design.

Celique Professional is renowned as an Australian hair brand, run by the team famous for the Christiane’s Hair Design salon dynasty, which has grown since its genesis in 1984 to now offer 25 hair locations across New South Wales as a proud family brand.

The salon institution prides itself on a premium approach to hair and top-quality service for all individual clients, its committed, constantly growing and improving team, and professionalism being a cornerstone of their inimitable salon brand. These values of customer service translate to the Celique Professional suite of products, which prioritise both the client and hairdresser with outstanding results. The product brand launched in 2021, becoming the next phase in this salon journey.

MORE THAN A CUT

Chief Executive Officer Craig Hollywood. Craig thought of the idea while considering the impact of a haircut and the counselling power of hairdressers, while having a haircut himself over eight years ago.

Get to know Short Back & Sidewalks, a philanthropic initiative that began in Perth in 2015 and that has expanded to a national organisation that provides positive connections for the homeless community with free haircuts.

The organisation operates now in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Adelaide and the Northern Territory, collaborating with existing hair service providers to create safe spaces, work to end the stigma around homelessness and boost confidence and mental health conditions in trying times, while changing the conversation around this topic more broadly.

“At age 15 I lost a close family member to addiction, who was someone who at times experienced homelessness. From that moment the fire of empathy was lit inside me and it’s something that’s been growing larger ever since, this fire of empathy is also something that burns brightly amongst all of our volunteering team, which is now over 300 strong across Australia,” said founder and

The initiative has helped 10,000 people in need across Australia and recently partnered with global hair movement and product brand evo to reach a lofty goal of 30 weekly services, and therefore 15,000 free haircuts a year, by 2025. The new partnership gives the organisation access to thousands of salons that will accelerate their expansion.

As the service continues to grow, it recently celebrated its Adelaide launch with a morning of 20 hair services at the Vinnies Men’s Crisis Centre on November 28, 2022. Volunteers from Maison Jacquet salon conducted the services, with sessions now planned every month to offer this consistent service.

The organisation operates under core principles of inclusion, collaboration, teamwork and sustainability, with economical practices that use the organisation’s resources to help as many people as possible. The organisation is volunteer based in every regard, and functions through the assistance of super-powered hairdressers and organisational staff using their skills for good.

With a seamless sign-up process that asks hairdressers and barbers to commit on a fortnightly or monthly basis, you can make this your New Year’s resolution to do something truly amazing in 2023.

RENYA XYDIS

VALONZ FOUNDER & EDITORIAL HAIRSTYLIST

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR SALON’S STYLE AESTHETIC?

Sexy, well lived in, well travelled and a vibe. Every room has its own personality in a beautiful well travelled way, with one room resembling New York, and another Paris, another one looks like Italy and there’s a private room. People feel really safe and happy here.

WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A HAIRDRESSER?

I was 15 years old when I left school and I just wanted to do something creative that meant something to me. With hairdressing I really liked the fact that I could work with people. I really wanted to connect with people and it was the best way. Through the years you realise what you’re doing is creating something really beautiful for an individual and that's a part of you, so you’re sort of putting your mark on a client and it’s like a piece of art. I didn’t realise until later that you could touch so many hearts.

PICK YOUR POISON.

My favourite thing in the world is water, I don’t drink!

YOUR FAVOURITE INSTAGRAM ACCOUNT?

Anything that makes me laugh, like @sooshimango.

IF YOU COULD HAVE DINNER WITH ANYONE IN THE WORLD, WHO WOULD IT BE AND WHAT WOULD BE ON THE MENU?

Sophia Loren and hot chips.

AN ITEM IN YOUR WARDROBE THAT MAKES YOU FEEL THE MOST ‘YOU'? Anything black and a comfy pair of runners, I’ve got like 20 pairs in my wardrobe.

A SONG THAT WILL GET YOU DANCING WITHOUT FAIL?

When I Think of You by Janet Jackson.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CUT AND/OR COLOUR TO CREATE IN THE SALON?

At the moment it’s face framing colour and face framing haircuts, so really giving the client something that she can actually show her cheekbones, show her eyes, show her neck and, at the same time, the colour echoing that beautifully.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO SEE MORE OF IN THE HAIR INDUSTRY IN THE FUTURE?

Better haircuts. Bring back the cuts! I think we’ve all seen how good everyone is at colour, but just bring back really cool haircuts and make statements with cuts.

A QUOTE TO LIVE BY?

If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always gotten.

DREAM CAR?

A McLaren in a beautiful royal blue because blue is happiness and it just calms you down.

WHAT HAIR PRODUCT/TOOL ARE YOU LOVING?

Always the Dyson Supersonic blow dryer, it just speeds up my day and clients walk out with beautiful bouncy, shiny, healthy hair and they're done a lot faster.

THE EDIT

SACHA MITIC

WHAT ARE SOME HAIR TRENDS YOU’RE LOVING AT THE MOMENT?

Shorter cute cuts with sensual movements.

COULD YOU TELL US ONE OF YOUR CAREER HIGHLIGHTS?

In the 90s when I landed in New York for my next step as a session stylist. I got the opportunity to work with great titles such as Allure, Vogue, Cosmopolitan, New Yorker, Fashion of the Times, ELLE and more. I also had the opportunity to meet and work with celebrities like Lauren Hutton, Diane von Furstenberg, Bianca Jagger and Cameron Diaz. I’m very thankful for my time in New York, I got to develop my skills and mind.

WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR FAVOURITE SACHAJUAN HAIR CARE PRODUCTS?

The whole line, when it comes down to specific products it all depends on what I will create and the starting point of the texture I’m working on.

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE AUSTRALIANS’ STYLE WHEN IT COMES TO BEAUTY AND HAIR?

The world is connected more than ever through digital channels. This gives us access to all news, movements and changes at the same time around the world and streamlines the view on fashion and beauty. The different climate does have impact. Australia has more of a hot beach climate and this will create variations on how people approach their looks and hair compared to a cooler continent.

WHAT CUT AND COLOUR ARE YOU LOVING RIGHT NOW?

To break up textures and to emphasise the movement. When it comes to colour, I emphasise the natural colours to make them pop out.

WHAT DO YOU PREDICT WILL BE THE BIGGEST HAIR TREND OF 2023?

Looking at fashion, including a wider and loose silhouette. I think we will see more of shorter hair, it doesn’t mean it only has to be boyish. The long hair will always stay as it is a very classic attribute, but young fashionable youth will react on the glamorous looks that have been in focus for a decade and there will be a different approach and a reaction on how to express femininity.

HOW DO YOU START YOUR MORNINGS?

When I’m in Stockholm I start my mornings walking my jack russell Bob, then a cup of coffee and checking my emails. I do some stretching followed up with a shower and head off to the office.

NAME THREE DESERT ISLAND HAIR PRODUCTS OR TOOLS YOU COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT.

Scissors, comb and Sachajuan Hair Repair.

NAME A SONG THAT WILL ALWAYS GET YOU DANCING. Lust for life, Iggy Pop.

WHAT’S SOMETHING YOU WOULD LIKE PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT YOUR BRAND?

It has been a process of 40 years of professional work to understand how, what and why. We created high quality products that would support professionals in their work while, at the same time, ensuring we help consumers maintain their results and have easy products to work withproducts that give you control but don’t control you.

70S BABE

This look is such a vibe! I'm loving everything about this bold 70s inspired poncho, paired with the bucket bag and lace up knee high boots. I love that it allows just enough arm to peek out so you can layer your favourite knits or long sleeves dress underneath, which is what this gorgeous model has done with a satin dress that has textual details on the cuffs and neckline, really adding personality to this look. The poncho is a very versatile piece to have in your wardrobe that has evolved so much over time. It's the perfect layering piece for the cooler months with so many ways to create a really chic look. This model has kept it simple with the hair, which is perfect because the outfit does all the talking! I would love to see her with a French bob, hitting right above the chin with a fringe and textual highlights. When it comes to styling I would keep it really relaxed by enhancing the natural textures of the hair. I would blow dry O&M Style Guru in for volume and added texture paired with O&M Surf Bomb to give us that effortless, sexy texture we want.

MY WAY

LIFE ON THE FRINGE

I love the use of colour and texture here, the juxtaposition of the classic Chanel 2.5 in white, paired back with the crisp white shirt, classic blue denim jeans and crazy fringing pattern jacket, pulls this look together beautifully. The fringing on the jacket is fun, I love how unique this jacket is in the pattern and the cut - she is rocking her own style, which I applaud. Although the platform red and gold shoes are major, I don’t think they work with this look, I would have liked to see a pop of neon pink or yellow on a shoe to pick up the colours in the jacket, as well as something light and not so clunky. Her hair length is amazing, however, I would have liked to see her with some soft layering around her face to break up the lankiness of it. Volume and movement is what she needs. The block colour is a strong look, which I love, but I would intensify that gloss with 00/00 in Wella’s Shinefinity, this will give her hair that luxe look, Shinfinity is genius, as it will help with the blow dry with hair that long as it makes blow drying a dream. Then for the blow dry I would use Eimi Root Shoots and give her a big bouncy blow dry with Dyson Supersonic, as it’s fast drying and has no extreme heat to protect long hair like she has, followed by the Dyson Corrale to smooth it out. I’d finish with some Eimi Mystify Me to make it gleam.

FLOURISH

DISCOVER VIRTUE, A SCIENTIFIC BREAKTHROUGH THAT’S CHANGING THE WAY WE TREAT, CARE FOR, STYLE AND EVEN THINK ABOUT HAIR, AND FLOURISH, THEIR REVOLUTIONARY APPROACH TO FEMALE HAIR LOSS AND GROWTH, WRITES ARIANA PEZESHKI

Virtue is the prestige hair care brand that goes beyond care to biotech-based repair, as centred on the hero and multi-patented Alpha Keratin 60ku component. This pioneering technology changes the health and quality of hair, as the first and only ingredient of its kind. Six years ago Virtue came across an entirely new way to collect Keratin in its pure form. Alpha Keratin 60ku is a proprietary hair-healing protein clinically proven to transform hair into its healthiest version yet in as few as five uses. With real technology and real results, it's no wonder the brand has Hollywood jumping on board with the likes of Jennifer Garner and Charlize Theron becoming part of the brand.

Flourish is Virtue’s latest ground-breaking invention that deals with female hair loss. With 40 per cent of women experiencing hair loss by the time they are 40, Virtue is on a mission to shatter the stigma and ignite the important conversation surrounding feminine hair loss by delivering better hair growth products. Two ground-breaking keratin proteins power the Flourish products with regenerative medicine to form a complex molecule with the ability to repair and nourish the scalp, providing fragile hair with the strength, elasticity and flexibility that is needed to survive.

“Our scientists started to look at how our technology could be affecting regrowth and how we could possibly accelerate it,” shared Virtue Labs founder and CEO Melisse Shaban. “The resulting Virtue Flourish line includes a complex that is 95 per cent Alpha and 5 per cent Gamma Keratin. This particular ratio helps with inflammation, which is a huge part of why women begin to lose hair. A healthy scalp grows healthy hair, and quelling inflammation at the scalp helps to allow new hair through the follicle.”

As we know, hair growth takes time and this formula works together to repair and rejuvenate hair so it looks amazing while growing new healthy hair. New hair can only survive if cared for and this nourishing new formula is perfect for fragile hair as it emerges from the scalp, increasing the strength and thickness of new fibres. It nourishes the microbiome, clears follicles and strengthens the moisture barrier. Through a third-party clinical study, Virtue measured the effectiveness of the three-step regimen. With 100 per cent of hair growing faster, 94 per cent healthier feeling hair and 91 per cent less fall-out, the results speak for themselves.

The Flourish line is safe for colour-treated hair, and is crueltyfree, gluten-free and vegan, while also being free of sulphates, parabens, phthalates and synthetic colours or dyes. Combining science and nature, Flourish contains cutting-edge plant Phytoactives and proven hair growth accelerators with proteins. A three-

step system contains shampoo and conditioner for thinning hair and a density booster, as an effective regimen for mild to moderate thinning hair and for clients seeking a natural solution. The Flourish range gives clients a spa-like feel with aromatic fragrances blended into the products, such as bright citrus, clean flowers, and balancing woods with basil and patchouli essential oils for scalp care and healthy hair.

The Flourish Density Booster is a nutrient infusion for the scalp that targets fatigued follicles and fragile hair. Clients can also add the Flourish Volumizing Styler to their collection. Ideal for fine hair, this self-foaming formula is lightweight and provides instance bounce, body and hold for even the thinnest parts of the hair. The Manta Healthy Hair Brush is another addition to the revolutionary range, which bends and moulds to the shape of a hand and scalp to create less tension on each strand of hair. The newest launch, the Virtue Flourish Mask for Thinning hair, adds moisture and strength to fragile hair without ever weighing it down, while also providing protection from shedding and promoting healthy growth.

Key ingredients in the flourishing range include Alpha Keratin, Gamma Keratin, and Larch Wood Extract, which work together to nourish the scalp, repair damage, and provide hair elasticity and flexibility while encouraging a growth phase. Clients can expect hair to feel healthier and appear more vibrant while cuticles are restored and repaved with shine. Each strand of hair will become thicker with added volume and bounce while the scalp also becomes healthier and transforms by unclogging follicles and adding a surface of moisture.

Flourish is ideal for those with mild to moderate hair loss due to an array of factors, including hereditary, hormonal, nutritional and everyday stressors. Clients can expect new hair growth gradually over three to six months.

“It’s part of our mission with Flourish to help shatter the stigma of hair loss,” Melisse said. “I think younger women are used to sharing their lives more than generations before. So, more and more, women who are experiencing hair loss don’t suffer in silence as much. They’ve opened up the conversation, and they are starting to demand that the industry do more to address it.”

Virtue pioneers innovative hair technology that changes the health and quality of hair one product at a time. The Flourish line continues the brand’s ethos of quality haircare and ingredients into the future. Later this year the brand will also launch its Brow Enhancing Serum as part of the Flourish range, adding to this product legacy. For more information visit www.virtuelabs.com

SMILE

A DENTAL STUDIO LABEL DESIGNED BY AN AWARD-WINNING PORTUGUESE ARCHITECT THAT’S ACCOMPANIED BY TWO OTHER LEADING SYDNEY STUDIOS, ABOUT SMILES HAS PROPELLED ITS NAME TO THE FOREFRONT OF COSMETIC AND AESTHETICALLY SPECIALISED DENTAL ARTISTRY THANKS TO DR AODHAN DOCHERTY AND HIS EVER-INCREASING PROFILE.

Adental brand that puts the smile back into dentistry and the charm back into the chair, Dr Aodhan Docherty has a unified approach that profiles his plethora of dental skills as aspirational and exciting. An effervescent and lively personality has changed the ‘behind closed doors’ dental sentiment and brought it to the forefront while even attracting brands like White Glo, where Dr Aodhan is an ambassador and product development consultant.

After a few years of working in the public hospital from 2012, Dr Aodhan started working at the About Smiles Chatswood clinic. Alongside the owner and his now business partner, one receptionist and a couple of nurses at a time when the clinic was brand new with no brand awareness.

“Fast forward six months and we had rapid growth despite being in the most heavily saturated dental market in Australia and I think that, despite being a young fresh face and relatively new, patients enjoyed the personal touch, the chat and banter, and the time we take to get to know people,” Dr Aodhan said.

Throughout the following few years, About Smiles opened another three clinics in Sydney, and the small team grew to 50 to 60 people. It was at this same time that Dr Aodhan began to realise his specialisation in a cosmetic focus and noticed that Sydney really didn't have a big name in cosmetic dentistry.

“The plan was then formed to create a cosmetic hub not just for Sydney but for patients to travel to from abroad. I couldn't just open another clinic though, I needed to grow the foundations first and that meant personally with going to all corners of the globe to learn from the best for a few years and building the machine behind the scenes that would be able to facilitate first class care. This necessitated a laboratory with technicians sourced from around the world, and a media company,” Aodhan said.

The About Smiles difference is that Dr Aodhan and his business partner Chris Ho have a six person fully functioning laboratory including an in-house media team to aid in recordings for patient education.

“I waited for a few years for the best spot I could find and it popped up in

June 2021 during the pandemic, in the perfect location with all forms of public transport metres away and the Opera House and Harbour Bridge at its doorstep. We understood that such an incredible location and such a unique clinic needed a world class fit out and so we engaged Pedra Silva from Portugal to do so,” Dr Aodhan said. The practice is located in Quay Quarter, recently named the ‘world’s best building’ as designed by Danish Architects.

Although Dr Aodhan and his team were challenged by the space itself, as it has multiple low ceiling heights, they opted for an open black ceiling, track light work with strategically positioned lights, including the underlighting of benches and reception areas, meshwork grills in treatment room ceilings and a unique flowing gold panel wall. Every single aspect was handmade and bespoke in the clinic, the exact same way they treat their patients’ treatments.

“My focus at About Smiles Dental Cosmetics is to deliver world class cosmetic dental treatment for patients all over Australia and abroad. I focus on porcelain veneers, resin bonding and Invisalign primarily, and I have a team of dentists and hygienists to provide every aspect of general dental work as well. It’s a comprehensive hub,” he said.

The design of the clinic encompasses elements of a very high-end spa or luxurious hotel to create a 'non dental' vibe and atmosphere.

“We have hand trowelled concrete floors in our reception area, carefully chosen furniture pieces and strategically designed underlighting to illuminate the clinic when the light goes down. One of the three surgery rooms is glass on two of the four walls, allowing natural daylight and sunlight to come into the room while also allowing for privacy due to the sheer blinds. Each room has ceiling mounted televisions with streaming services so patients can choose what they'd like to watch during their visits. It has an in-house 3D bone scanner, a 3D mouth scanner and also a painless anaesthesia machine - all the very latest technology for a comfortable visit!”

Testament to the supreme fit out and media profile, from day one the new clinic has been booked out at least five weeks in advance. Within a few short months the team has doubled in size, reinforcing the reality that if you build the profile, the people will come.

FLAWLESS FEAT

WITH SKIN HEALTH AND CONCERNS IN THE SPOTLIGHT, MORPHEUS8 IS THE LATEST FRACTIONAL TREATMENT USING MULTIPULSE BURST TECHNOLOGY TO REDUCE IRREGULARITIES ON THE FACE AND BODY.

Sitting in front of the mirror is the best time to recognise those stubborn skin concerns and, with a technology focused approach to bridging the gap between cosmetic and medical solutions, GC Skin clinic is garnering a reputation as a leader in aesthetics in South East Queensland. The Morpheus8 hero treatment that elevates the skin is adding to that legacy.

Highly effective as a standalone procedure or in combination with additional cosmetic treatments and the latest from INMode – Morpheus8 boosts collagen production to new levels, revealing healthier, glowing and blemish-free skin for all. GC Skin has seen the benefits of this latest innovation to service a highly discerning local clientele that isn’t just wanting injectables and a sometimes ‘over-filled’ look as the solution to plump and picture perfect skin. Morpheus8 has been showing exceptional results for those wanting to really achieve that sometimes elusive skin-health nirvana.

Morpheus8 is unique in targeting and strengthening the FibroSeptal Network (FSN) skin-fat matrix, ensuring improved skin appearance and reduced irregularities on the face and body, with a significantly uniform effect. The treatment targets fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, pore size reduction and overall skin concerns.

“The next step is often to go to surgery but if surgery isn’t necessarily the best option – in many cases it’s not, so we needed something in between the medical and surgical,” said Dr George Calfus. “In saying that it can also complement surgery – you’ve improved quality, condition and firmness of skin itself, if you can improve the skin with Morpheus8 your surgery results are going to be better. If you’re working with better skin any other service, surgery or treatment is going to gain a better result.”

The treatment offers visible results within a few days and that are best noticeable after six weeks, with continual improvements up to twelve months after the treatment. The numbers of treatments necessary can vary from one to four with intervals of three to six weeks, and can variously cater to individual clients, with results also depending on client and lifestyle.

THE PEACE WE’VE BEEN MISSING

WHY MENTAL HEALTH AND SHOWING UP FOR YOURSELF FIRST IS KEY, WRITES JAKE PUTAN.

Imust pre-frame this by stating that I am by no means a medical professional and all comments in this article should not be taken as such, and are simply derived from experiences and observations developed through my own personal story of those I’ve been blessed to have worked with.

There are many by-products of how mental health will transform the industry, from increased staff retention, price increases, diversification of education, business re-development and scaling, but for the sake of this article let’s frame it around the individual and our responsibility with our own daily mental health.

During 2017 to 2018, while being involved with a majority of hair events, in contracts with major brands, speaking on stage and featuring in various magazines, I soon after made a decision to somewhat remove my presence from the industry. I felt lost and without clear direction about where I was headed. I felt empty in who I was becoming since my identity was entirely made up of titles and associations but carried no substance.

Sure, my ego had been fed dopamine hits in the temporariness of a moment on stage or in public recognition, but within 24 hours these events were over. The highs had come and I felt the equal lows to match. These lows catalysed a significant turning point and an extensive journey of learning how (and why) to prioritise my personal needs and mental health first before agreeing to take as many shiny objects as I could find.

I set out to find peace in what I truly cared about that I could work towards daily that would make an integral difference within the lives of the people we serve as hairstylists, and what genuine change we can collectively create within in the industry. I began to look at my own experiences, reflecting on all of these events to learn about why I had become filled with such negative thoughts and feelings and how to support others experiencing similar confusion.

After seeking professional help, attending self-development retreats, investing in courses and mentoring to build my understanding of what I needed (mentally and emotionally) plus what I wanted to create (physically) for others, I began sharing my learnings with clients about what I was doing to prioritise my mental health. They soon were asking to meet privately outside the salon to talk about what they were also going through. Without even offering anything else but connection, the result of someone simply having space to be heard without judgement was utterly transformative to how people were feeling.

The negative thoughts and feelings had simply grown out of being in a space that lacked connection. How often have we just

thrown money at mental health, when someone just required connection? How often have we given someone a pay rise and they ended up leaving because it wasn’t money they craved?

By offering spaces of connection, we have the power to transform the mental health of ourselves as well as the individuals in our team and those we serve – resulting in higher workplace productivity, greater fulfilment of work, higher staff retention, client satisfaction, and more effective business structures based on the collective input of the team.

During 2022, as a collective summary of this work, I began increasing the priority for my mental health, showing up for myself first so I could give more effectively to others, then seeing where this resulted in more fulfilling engagements in every area of my work. Specifically, it helped me birth the vision to support business owners in also finding their ‘why’, reconstructing this demonstration of leadership that individuals seemed to be requiring and to develop spaces of connection. I began working directly with a business owner in Newcastle to initiate this model. The business owner is currently actively transforming her business and her team whilst building out her own workshops, thriving within a period where I’ve seen so many other hair salons and barbershops left to close down. This vision is called Legacy Education.

As I prioritise my mental health to understand how to transform my inner state as well as extend this message to whomever may read, I’m more interested than ever in encouraging others to find their ‘why’ and create spaces of connection within our personal and business relationships. This empowers us to make a difference for all those in our teams and extended communities, and all starts with what we do each morning, I feel internally fulfilled knowing that I get to work towards a purpose daily, that is so authentic to me.

When individuals have the space to allow their voice to be heard and their personal needs met, with understanding, compassion and connection, without judgement or the old school dictatorship mentality, we will completely shift our industry across the board.

That’s the peace we’ve been missing.

That’s the new standard of leadership we will see flourish.

That’s the legacy I wish to leave. For more information email admin@jakeputan.com

MEET JIMMY

As the hairdressing and barber industries continue to innovate, dynamic spaces are inspiring in their novel approach to hair and customer services. Jimmy Rod’s Barbershop in Brisbane was recently awarded Best Barbershop Design at the Australian Modern Barber Awards (AMBA) and, after discovering this two-story hybrid bar and barbershop, it’s clear to see why.

The all-encompassing men’s style destination is situated at The Barracks. It has a room for party hire upstairs, with both a six-chair and two-basin barbershop and a licensed bar downstair. The modern oasis allows men to relax and have a beer with their hair services, and it was a finalist at the AMBAs in the Australian Modern Barber Business of the Year and Best Business Director categories as well for this successful business model.

“Jimmy Rod’s offers an experience that’s not your ordinary barbershop. We are the one-stop shop for men’s services and offer group bookings to encourage our clients to stay for longer, relax and socialise. We’ve got different rooms and groups can also play their choice of music in the area they are hanging out in,” Jimmy shared. “We have a fully licensed bar with three beers on tap and different areas where you can chill out and relax before or after your barber appointment. We also offer other grooming services, including facial scrubs and face shaving.”

The award-winning aesthetic embodies the feeling of a traditional barbershop, with a warm interior, leather couches, wide mirrors and contemporary touches including a PS3, to cater to every facet of the client’s experience.

“The design is modern-industrial with a lot of brick and marble and traditional

leather furnishings,” Jimmy said. “There’s a separate design in the barbershop area that features light colours and the bar area has more mood lighting. The design of the salon came from Shave Saloon, which featured a bar and restaurant. It’s closed now but it used to be in the Brisbane CBD before COVID and lockdowns impacted the city. We decided to move away from food and focused more on bar and barbershops.”

Catering to a clientele of men usually between the ages of 20 to 45, the barbershop demographic includes professionals during the week in its position on the edge of the Brisbane CBD, while also seeing tourists visiting for sports and music events at the nearby Suncorp Stadium. The space also services dads and their sons who experience the barbershop mostly on weekends and is starting to see more backpackers too, who always stick around for requisite beer as well.

The space’s services are headlined by

The Deluxe shave, which includes a facial, and exfoliation, as well as a hot towel and cold towel and aftershave. Services are complemented by American Crew products and tools.

With their award nods in the books and an ever-growing clientele ready to experience every aspect of Jimmy Rod’s Barbershop, this bold institution will continue to grow.

“We are looking at offering colour services, which we have been doing a bit of, but it hasn’t been a big focus. We’ve seen a big increase in barbershops offering colour and want to focus on increasing our colour service offering through 2023,” Jimmy shared. “We are also working on a similar concept in another location to further extend the services we offer and include waxing and eyebrow services. It’s in the works so watch this space.”

In fashion and beauty, it often pays to take a risk. That one person is all it takes to break the norm and wear that new look that gets everyone’s head turning. When it comes to running your hairdressing business though, there are some risks you might not want to leave unprotected.

Here are some common risks hairdressers face and the business insurance policies that can protect them from the consequences.

RISK 1: THIRD PARTY INJURY OR PROPERTY DAMAGE

Scissors, razors, electrical equipment and hazardous chemicals –there are many things that can go wrong in a salon.

All it takes is a client to trip over a cord or for you to spill some bleach on a supplier’s new sneakers and you could be in for an expensive claim.

Take this example where a 70-year-old customer slipped on cut hair at a barbershop after a service and allegedly injured his shoulder. A $75,000 settlement was agreed in court.

Luckily, the barbershop had Public Liability insurance, which protects them from third-party injury and property damage, and the insurer paid the money along with $10,000 in legal fees.

RISK 2: LOST OR DAMAGED CONTENTS OR EQUIPMENT

How much would it cost to replace your stock, contents and salon equipment if it was lost, damaged or stolen?

You won’t be creating new styles (or making any money) if you have no scissors and buzzers on hand!

Fortunately, you can get Portable Equipment and Contents cover as sections within a Business Insurance Package, which can also cover other risks, such as your building, glass, and business interruption.

A NEW DAWN

Since speaking with a few business owners recently they seem to have a newfound motivation for 2023. So many suffered from some sort of burnout toward the end of the 2022 year, which seemed to stem from a significant overextended effort to please everyone through difficult trading conditions with staff, health and adjusting to a new pace.

For some, they had an almost record month of December, even with a massively reduced staff level. For others there was a dramatic drop in turnover, however the bottom line was the same, if not better, than previous years.

It seems that business owners have decided that they have had enough of the negativity surrounding the last few years and actually want to change their ways to make a difference in their businesses. Almost everyone wants to change something in 2023 to attract more talent to their business and also streamline their operation to be more profitable and more rewarding for their entire team.

The big questions are almost unanimously asked – ‘what can I do to improve everything this year?’ and ‘how can I attract more staff?’.

It seems like there is a new dawn rising, and that the newfound attitudes have finally begun to shine through and we can now see the future through clearer glasses. The ‘poor me’ attitude seems to be finally brushed aside in place of ‘I’ve got this.’

The realisation that bad times don’t last forever and that only when we put our mind, body and soul into achieving greatness can it really happen. The realisation that we are all in control of our own destinies makes us wake up to a newfound love of what we do and who we are going forward.

This seems to happen every New Year, so make 2023 count, make it the year that you follow through with every bit of gusto that you had on New Year’s Eve when you decided to make the changes.

There are good signs that we are finally getting the overseas workers that we have been so desperately and anxiously awaiting.

WHAT WOULD TOM DO?

I always recommend a team day early in each year where the entire team gets together and does a whole day of team building

and goal setting while setting a new vision for the business. This is a plan that is well thought out, put together and brilliantly delivered to ensure a successful, fun and profitable 2023.

I always use these days as a means to setting the team culture within the business. It’s a model that is used by some of the biggest and fastest growing companies. Nothing compares to a fun workspace and, in many instances, it’s more important than money.

This is also a great way to reward the team for an awesome effort during the busy period and unveil the new directions for 2023.

Involving guest speakers and product companies is always a perfect way to get the team more engaged and inspired while finishing off with setting a target focused goal for the New Year. You can also offer some big rewards for reaching targets, making the day inspiring and putting some effort into recognising past performance.

The day should be fun and leave the team feeling that they want to do more of these days as a collective. We once organised an Amazing Race event that really engaged the entire team. The team had to find clues before moving to the next destination, eventually arriving at the venue where we held the day’s events. This started the team off in great spirits and totally immersed them in the rest of the day. It’s amazing how a motivated team can reach new heights by working together in an exciting and fun fuelled environment. This was all before social media posts but the word spread so quickly that we soon had dozens of people wanting to join our team.

Remember that your team are your best advertisement for finding new team members. When you become the salon that everybody wants to work in you will miraculously find resumes dropped off on your front desk or a DM in your Instagram account.

Rewarding your team for achieving is the single most important gesture to maintaining long term staff and crucial to ensuring that your business is prosperous and profitable.

I am always happy to help with organising team days or provide ideas for organising team days. Please email me directly if you have a topic or any questions that you would like me to address in the following issue of INSTYLE at tom@razorsmiths.com.au

IT’S THAT TIME OF THE YEAR WHEN WE RE-ASSES EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED LAST YEAR AND TRY TO WORK OUT WHAT WE CAN DO DIFFERENTLY THIS YEAR TO MAKE OUR LIVES BETTER, WRITES TOM DONATO.

ONE DOOR CLOSED, TWO DOORS OPENED

The idea of this series is to showcase the ‘warts and all’ of my journey into the salon of the future. I am pleased to say that since I last shared our journey, we have had various new learnings and a rollercoaster of a time.

It started when my new landlord, Woolworths, seemingly tore apart our proposed interior design. To be a part of our new location and to work with Woolworths there are some strict rules that the average private premises salon owner would never know about. Not only did we need to have our interior designer approved, but she also had to meet our guidelines and keep checking in with the fitout guide provided by the centre.

We submitted our first reference, something that we thought was perfect, and within 24 hours there were so many footnotes on the document that we began questioning everything. We brainstormed some ideas regarding the changes required with our interior designer and before long we were back on track. We had two weeks to reshape the design and submit it to avoid being in hot water. The pressure was on.

Whilst this was happening it was time for the team’s appraisals, which take place every March and September, to discover the mindset of the team, in terms of career goals, life aspirations, likes and dislikes about our environment and more. This feedback then helps shape the six months ahead both personally and professionally. It had been roughly eight weeks since sharing the new salon plans with them, so I was hoping to check in, see how they were feeling about our future and use this particular chat to fuel some of the re-invention ideas I had for the new salon.

Turns out it wasn’t the fuel I was hoping for. By the end of these talks, one of my long serving managers expressed his desire for a

career change and subsequently resigned. Furthermore, another appraisal revealed similar desires and expressed her feelings of ‘falling out of love’ with our industry. I was crushed, and safe to say I couldn’t think clearly at all. My wife Laura was there in solid support as always but I couldn’t shake the thoughts – Why me? Why now? How can I have a host of positives going for me and at the same time have an equal amount of challenges?

After consoling long into the night with Laura, the morning started with an emotional outpour to my parents. After that, I had a chat with my business coach Faye, which helped shift my focus to where it needed to be. I stamped my feet, had my cry, dusted myself off and pushed myself to find the positives. Then it happened.

Not one, but two new applications for apprentice positions came through, both of whom were young talents searching for greener pastures - somewhere to be trained, motivated and inspired to be better. Interviews were secured, contracts were created and start dates were locked in.

Despite the emotional rollercoaster these two weeks brought for me, it has lit a fire in my belly and taught me lessons that will shape the salon of the future, becoming a timely hurdle accelerating the re-invention of our induction and training format for future employees of our salon. I’ve had the opportunity to exercise this in real time with our new recruits and solidify this for the new salon.

The career path that DI IORIO will provide will have no limit on the opportunities it offers. An environment that serves a purpose to consistently re-invent yourself to continuously love your job and industry.

GOALS + PLANNING = SUCCESS

when you need to boost something, but not too much.

It’s a new year and coming into the year with newfound enthusiasm means now is the time to look at your business and create a plan for 2023. Here are some tips on how to get started.

MAKE A PLAN TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS

As the saying goes, a goal without a plan is just a dream. Setting goals are great for helping to focus your time and energy, but if you don't create a strong plan to track your journey towards that goal, you'll likely struggle to reach it.

To create a plan, you first need to determine your overall vision. Where do you see your business in one, two and even five years? Then, reflect on where it’s at now. Look at every aspect of your business, from your staff to the physical location and design of your space; does it all align with your vision? You’ll want to use your salon software to run reports so you can see where your business is from a financial perspective. This will help you identify your starting point.

Once you know what your starting point is and where you want to be, identify two or three goals that you’d like to achieve to get you closer to your vision. Break those goals up into a series of tasks or projects. For example, if your goal is to grow the number of staff, you need to ensure you’ll have the client base, the physical space, and the income to support hiring another stylist.

Now, all you need to do is create a timeline for those tasks, add tadd hem into your calendar to create deadlines.

UTILISE THE POWER OF MARKETING

Marketing is an incredibly important tool for any business, especially in the hair and beauty industry. In saying that, there are some things you need to be careful of when creating a marketing plan for the next year.

Gone are the days of a typical monthly promotion; some people believe that specials every month can be detrimental as clients may intentionally not book at your salon and wait to see what your next special is. You want to use marketing tools effectively; use them

Instead, focus your efforts on a few special times a year. Maybe you want to celebrate the anniversary of your business opening with a special gift to all clients who visit that month to increase bookings, or maybe you just want to boost the relationship between your clients and the team by showing some love to your staff on the salon’s social media when it's their birthday.

Another approach is to focus your promotions and specials on your quieter months. If you find that your appointment book is fully booked in December but empty in January, create a special for January. Give it to all of your clients booked in December when they leave, to incentivise them to rebook with you the next month. Just make sure you track the results of these marketing campaigns to see if it’s successful.

Also, ensure you utilise the power of your salon and spa software. Your software should allow you to set up automated marketing messages, so you can "set and forget" many types of marketing like ‘happy birthday’ texts, or messages prompting them to rebook if they haven't done so in a certain number of weeks.

TEAMWORK MAKES THE DREAM WORK

Everyone knows that achieving goals by yourself can be hard, but having a team helping you along the way can make the world of difference. Your team will be more motivated and productive when you all work towards a common goal and when they fully understand how they can contribute to making it happen.

When creating a business plan or deciding on what to do for a promotion, include your staff in those discussions. Making them feel included helps create an open and honest environment that boosts the culture of your team, invites creativity and fun into your workplace, and allows your staff, no matter how new they are, to be heard.

Finally, remember that Rome wasn't built in a day, and neither was your salon! It takes time to create a great workplace, and while you cannot expect success immediately, you will get there with a powerful team to back you, an organised marketing strategy, and a strong plan on how your business can be the best it's ever been in 2023. GOING SOLO

CAITLIN

The last few years has been a turbulent time for the industry, with many stylists questioning ‘what’s next?’ for their careers. Since that time, there’s been a shift in the air as more and more talented colourists, stylists and hair-artists take a leap of faith into the sole trader space.

Hairdressers across the country have set out by themselves to build their own client-base of adoring fans, and focus on building their own wealth. It’s a shift that feels almost reminiscent of the 2010’s ‘be your own boss’ movement, but with its own, fresh ‘23 spin. We love to see it! For those who are curious, yet tentative, to embark on the solo career sea-change and are currently weighing up the pros and cons, start with your why, where, and how

DETERMINE YOUR WHY

Your why is the heartbeat that takes your idea from a concept to something tangible. It’s the first step to working out if you can sustainably achieve a long-term goal and dodge burn-out. It goes beyond the initial excitement of deciding that you’re going to start a business for yourself, and helps you put a greater purpose behind the initial desire.

Ask yourself: what are my strengths? What can I offer clients that is unique to me and sets me apart from my competition? What do I love about my craft and my clients? Can I see myself still feeling this way in ten years’ time?

Considering some of these things will help solidify your ideas and goals, and help build your solo business once the initial flame and excitement has simmered down.

LOCATE YOUR WHERE

Flying solo in any profession has its challenges, of course, but when your craft needs a fully decked-out workspace, it makes things a bit more complicated.

With the rise of the sole-trade hairdresser, there are a few paths to explore, from freelance, coworking spaces designed specifically for the hair and beauty space, mobile-hairdressing, to salons opening their doors to independent working stylists in a rent-a-chair like model. If you’re in it for the long haul or have the capacity to do so, re-modelling a room in your home has been a tried-and-true method for sole-trading hairdressers chasing their work-from-home dream.

Remember, your where will largely impact your when and your timeframe for setting out on your own.

STRATEGISE YOUR HOW

The logistics are never fun, but they are oh-so important. How exactly are you going to run your solo business day-to-day? What are you going to use to manage appointments, get more bookings, manage sales of services and products, process payments and market to your client base?

Research tech tools that can give you a helping hand managing the day-to-day stuff. Shortcuts Solo is a solution designed for the sole-trader. It has everything you need to operate, fill your appointment book, and build your business. Solo takes care of all the hard-yards admin work, saving you valuable time and money that you can spend focusing on servicing your clients.

Solo features a full-service appointment book, client management features, 24/7 online booking, automated SMS reminders, simple, yet powerful, email and SMS marketing tools, and so much more. From $0 a month when bundled together with the ShortcutsPay Eftpos Terminal, it’s a must-have for those setting out on their sole trader journey. Going solo doesn't mean you have to go it alone.
