Welcome to The Color Purple at Kansas City Repertory Theatre.
It is an immense honor to share this powerful story with you — one that has moved audiences across generations and mediums, and now finds new resonance on our Spencer stage. Alice Walker’s indelible novel, brilliantly adapted for the musical stage by Marsha Norman, with music and lyrics by Brenda Russell, Allee Willis, and Stephen Bray, remains a triumphant celebration of the human spirit — its capacity for survival, transformation, and joy.
At the heart of The Color Purple is Celie, a woman whose journey from voicelessness to self-possession is both deeply personal and widely universal. Her story, and the stories of the women and men around her, pulse with pain and beauty, sorrow and resilience. Set against a backdrop of rural Georgia in the early 20th century, the show speaks to the legacy of trauma and oppression, but it also sings — literally — with love, sisterhood, and the radical act of choosing joy.
In bringing this production to KCRep, we wanted to center the emotional and spiritual truths of this story. We are proud to collaborate
with extraordinary artists — actors, designers, musicians, and technicians — whose hearts and talents illuminate this work with fresh perspective and deep respect. Among them are so many exceptional Kansas City-based artists, including several who are returning home to tell this story in the community that first nurtured them. Their presence makes this production not just powerful, but personal —infused with the spirit, history, and talent of this city and our community. Their artistry reminds us that theatre, at its best, can be a communal act of healing.
This is a story about the things we inherit and the things we choose to carry forward. About reclaiming your name, your body, your song. It’s about love — hard-won, imperfect, redemptive love — and the beauty we find when we dare to see ourselves fully and to be seen in return.
Thank you for being here and for sharing space and spirit with us. We hope The Color Purple leaves you moved, uplifted, and perhaps, like Celie, more connected to your own power and possibility.

To inspire, entertain, and open minds by creating transformative theatre experiences for all.
KCRep will be a catalyst for a culturally vibrant, equitable, and thriving Kansas City by connecting artists and audiences in a welcoming environment that fosters wonder, curiosity, and understanding.
One of the ways we practice our values is through Land
Acknowledgement — a formal statement that recognizes and respects Indigenous peoples as the traditional stewards of the land. Acknowledging the land is an expression of gratitude and appreciation to those whose
territory we reside on, and a way to show awareness of Indigenous land rights in our daily lives.
Scan the QR code to read KCRep’s ever-evolving Land Acknowledgement which we began developing after producing the world premiere of Native American playwright Larissa FastHorse’s What Would Crazy Horse Do? in 2017 on our Copaken Stage.
KCRep is also proud to be part of the Four Directions Native Playwright Residency Program. This collaborative initiative includes four arts organizations: the Great Plains Theatre Commons (GPTC), Tofte Lake Center, Tulsa Artists Fellowship, and Kansas City Repertory Theatre (KCRep). Each organization hosts a weeklong residency for a selected Native playwright and their work over the course of a year. Each residency takes place in a different region of the country, offering a unique focus and environment to support the development of the playwright’s work.

Best Presidential Attraction by Newsweek (2025)
KCRep enters it’s 62nd season as source of inspiration to thousands of our nation’s best artists and to millions of Americans in Kansas City and beyond.
Missouri Repertory Theatre was founded in 1964 by Dr. Patricia A. McIlrath, who is among a select few pioneers of the regional theater movement who believed that theater could change the world and could change our town. Kansas City’s citizens continue to benefit from Dr. Mac’s passionate commitment to artistic excellence, innovation, education, and community transformation. Under her direction, KC’s theatre fans enjoyed many memorable shows, including an unforgettable 1983 production of The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby. Dr. Mac’s vision for providing professional experience to early career artists continues today through our partnership with UMKC.
Following Dr. Mac’s retirement in 1985, George Keathley was
appointed as Artistic Director. During his tenure, and through his partnership with Executive Director James D. Costin, MRT was established as the pinnacle of artistic achievement for local theatre artists, creating a legacy of excellence through work in the civic community and with legendary MRT productions such as Dracula and Richard III.
In 2000, Peter Altman joined MRT as Artistic Director for a sevenyear tenure. His vision included laying the groundwork to promote the city more aggressively as a center for nationally recognized theatre artists, and he spearheaded changing the theatre’s name to Kansas City Repertory Theatre in 2006 to help achieve this goal. He also helped create KCRep’s second permanent performance venue, Copaken Stage, in Kansas City’s downtown Power & Light District.
Eric Rosen was hired as Producing Artistic Director in 2007. During his tenure, he was instrumental in
cultivating a national reputation and brand for KCRep and the city as a destination for reimagined classics such as Into the Woods and Evita, and critically acclaimed new works, including Clay, Venice, and Between the Lines.
In 2013, KCRep returned to the co-CEO structure when Rosen was partnered with Executive Director Angela Lee Gieras. Together, they led the company through a successful campaign for, and renovation of Spencer Theatre, crafted a five-year, $5 million campaign that increased investment in audiences, new works, and education, and rebranded the organization.
In 2019, director, producer, and educator Stuart Carden joined KCRep as its fifth Artistic Director. Deeply committed to centering KCRep in this region, Stuart believes the arts play a crucial role in strengthening communities. With an eye towards creating transformative theater experiences
for all, Stuart brought KCRep productions to the grounds of the World War I Museum and Memorial, the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, and Roanoke Park. Further expanding our reach, in 2022 Stuart launched KCRep for All, our expansive community tour that takes KCRep to community centers, libraries, and other public spaces all over the region. He strives to provide greater access to our art form and to reflect the passions, curiosities, and stories of the diverse communities that make KC such a vibrant city.
In 2024, Angela Gieras departed KCRep after 12 years, and in 2025, Jeremy Dewey joined KCRep as Executive Director. In this role, Jeremy oversees strategic management, operational oversight and external relations to ensure KCRep’s success and sustainability. He also works collaboratively with Artistic Director Stuart Carden to support all artistic programming and initiatives.

Interview by JANA LILES Director of Marketing & Communications
an episode of Poker Face on Peacock, then traded sound stages for snowy peaks in Whitefish, Montana, where I had the joy of performing in the annual Yuletide Holiday concert. After that, I traveled to Minneapolis to portray the powerful and complex character of Silver in Paradise Blue at the legendary Penumbra Theatre.
e are so thrilled to welcome back Angela Wildflower to the KCRep stage after her brilliant performance as Billie Holiday in last season's Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar & Grill. She was kind enough to give us an update on what she’s been up to since that production and a glimpse into her thoughts on preparing to play Celie in The Color Purple.
Q: KCRep patrons last saw you playing Billie Holiday in our production of LADY DAY AT EMERSON’S BAR & GRILL last fall. What have you been up to since?
A: Since Lady Day, the journey has been both rich and rhythmic. I filmed
Back home in Kansas City, I stepped into the shoes of Miss Adelaide in Guys & Dolls at Musical Theatre Heritage, then poured my energy into summer theater camps filled with joy, imagination, and young dreamers. Along the way, I’ve been creating original content, and developing theater curriculum for youth programs across the country.
And now, I return to KCRep to begin one of the most inspiring journeys of all — becoming Celie in The Color Purple.
Q: As someone who grew up in Kansas City, what does it mean to you to be performing here, in this city, for this community?
A: Getting to perform The Color Purple here at home is such a full-circle moment. This show has quickly become one of the highlights of my career, and I’m both humbled and honored to bring it to the city that raised me. There’s something deeply special about performing for the community that first poured into me. Every time I step on stage, it feels like I’m giving back a piece of the gift, love and inspiration Kansas City gave me.
Q: This is not your first time starring in THE COLOR PURPLE. What has been your journey with this show?
A: In 2022, I had the incredible opportunity to play Celie at Broadway Sacramento — a role I had dreamed of for years. In 2023, I stepped into Shug Avery’s shoes at the Denver Center, and returned to that role again in 2024 at Theatre Latté Da and Geva Theatre in Rochester, NY. Each version of the show revealed something new to me —about womanhood, about strength, about forgiveness.
Now, stepping back into Celie’s shoes, I bring new understanding, new information, and a deeper foundation in the story. That foundation allows me to leap further—and continue peeling back the layers of this moving, powerful journey. The Color Purple has become a part of me, and I’m honored every time I get to tell it.
Q: What excites you the most about taking on the role of Celie? What makes you the most nervous?
A: What excites me most is Celie’s transformation. To witness a woman go from voiceless to powerful — from invisible to fully seen — is breathtaking. As an actor, that kind of journey is a rare
and sacred challenge. Celie’s growth is subtle, spiritual, and seismic all at once, and getting to live through that arc on stage is both humbling and electrifying.
What makes me nervous is how personal it is. There’s nowhere to hide in this role. Celie demands vulnerability, truth, and a willingness to feel everything. But I also believe that’s where the magic lives — in the raw, honest places where the audience meets you heart first.
Q: What’s next for you and how can our patrons follow your journey?
"Every time I step on stage, it feels like I’m giving back a piece of the gift, love and inspiration Kansas City gave me."
Q: If you could say one thing to Alice Walker, who in 1982 became the first Black woman to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction for her novel THE COLOR PURPLE, which this musical is based on, what would it be?
A: I would say: Thank you for telling the truth. Thank you for giving voice to the silenced, space to the overlooked, and beauty to the broken places. Your words have helped generations of women — myself included — see ourselves with more clarity, compassion, and courage. This story continues to liberate, awaken, and restore. Because of your pen, we are reminded that love —especially selflove — is revolutionary.
A: Next up, I’m working on a new solo concert while continuing to audition for my next Broadway, TV, or film opportunity. At the same time, I’m passionately developing original children’s content through my Wildflower brand, creating theater curriculum for arts programs around the country, and working both in front of and behind the camera on new TV and film projects. It’s a beautifully creative season, and I’m excited for what’s unfolding.
If you’d like to stay connected or explore ways to bring Wildflower programming to your school or organization, you can follow me on Instagram at @iWildflower, on Facebook at Angela Wildflower Polk, and online at AngelaWildflower.com. I’d love to connect!
Interview by JANA LILES Director of Marketing & Communications
Q: You spent time here in Kansas City growing up and then worked on stages all over New York and the United States. What brought you back to Kansas City?
ost of Kansas City knows Damron Armstrong from both his work on stage and off- as the Artistic Director of The Black Repertory Theatre of Kansas City. Here at KCRep, we most recently worked with him in Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, and we are so happy to have him back for The Color Purple. We caught up with him just before rehearsals started to chat about his process as an actor, what he is most excited about with The Color Purple, and how he
A: To effect the change I want to see. After Travyon Martin's death in 2012, a cord struck in me of how the senseless death of a young boy was covered in the media — not with the sense of loss of a life a in motion with possibilities, but it was more about fashion sense: “Be afraid of boys in hoodies.” My thoughts went to, “Where is the platform that humanizes young men/boys of color?" It was at this moment I had an idea of the platform in which the Black voice could be elevated— and where better than in my home town, where African American actors had limited
Q: Tell us more about The Black Repertory Theatre of Kansas City and the work you do there.
A: The Black Repertory Theatre of Kansas City (BRTKC) elevates opportunities in the arts in Kansas City for people of color. It provides an additional platform for the African American, diaspora which provides another view of American life — the uniqueness of our experience — but most offends the commonalty.
men. Men who were instilled with a strong work ethic, but who may not have been in touch with their emotional side.
Q: What excites you the most about taking on the role of Ol’ Mister? What makes you the most nervous?
"I do the work because introducing the African American diaspora to theatrelovers is so important to me."
Q: Did you draw inspiration from any real-life figures, historical or personal, when preparing for a role like Ol’ Mister?
A: For the role of Ol’ Mister, I’m inspired by the men of my Greatgrandfathers' generation; men who were born and raised in rural North Carolina. Men who lived through slavery to become free
A: This is one for the bucket list, folks! I have been in the business long enough that I was around this show since its inception , and I got to be around to see Kansas City’s own Kingsley Legg originate this role on Broadway. Even while in Kansas City, Kingsley was an inspiration for young African American actors.
Q: You have dedicated your life to the art form of theatre, both on the stage and behind the scenes. What keeps you motivated to do this work?
A: Opening up theatre to those who have traditionally not had a pathway to the art form through our educational programming, as well as those performers
who didn't have a platform that bridged them into mainstream theatre in Kansas City and beyond. I do the work because introducing the African American diaspora to theatre-lovers is so important to me — as is providing representation to this often-marginalized group of Kansas Citians.
Q: Is there anything else you’d like us to know about you and your work?
A: THEATRE IS FOR EVERYONE! Come take in a show at The Black
Repertory Theatre of Kansas City! For the last eleven years, I have worked hard to bring thought-provoking theatre to Kansas City. I invite you to join our team as a patron, volunteer, technician, administrator or board member! Things are in motion for the doors to open at our new home, The Boone Theatre, located at 1701 E. 18th Street, in Kansas City's historic 18th & Vine Jazz District, in the spring 2026, and we need your support for another ten years of programming — and beyond!

(Music & Lyrics) Brenda Russell has a unique musical perspective, intimate voice and prolific treasure-trove of lyrics, that prove that a truly glowing talent only deepens with time. Composer of the classics “Get Here,” “If Only For One Night,” and the Grammy-nominated “Piano In The Dark,” Brenda’s songwriting prowess and chameleon-like ability to shift between musical genres and combine styles trumpeted ovations in 2005 with the opening
of the Tony Award-winning hit Broadway musical The Color Purple, for which she, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray co-wrote the music and lyrics. Brenda and her co-authors were also nominated for a 2007 Grammy in the Best Musical Show Album category for the original cast album.
(Music & Lyrics) Allee Willis is a one-woman creative think-tank. A multi-disciplinary artist and visionary thinker whose range of imagination and productivity knows no bounds, her success exuberantly defies categorization; ‘unique’ pales as a descriptor. Willis is a Grammy-winning and Emmy- and Tony-nominated composer, whose hit songs — including Earth, Wind & Fire’s “September” and “Boogie Wonderland,” The Pointer Sisters’ ‘Neutron Dance,” Pet Shop Boys with Dusty Springfield’s “What Have I Done To Deserve This,” and The Rembrandts’ “I’ll Be There For You (Theme From Friends)” — have sold over 50 million records. In 2006, Willis’ songs were also featured in three of the top grossing films of the year, Happy Feet, Night at the Museum, and Babel.
(Music & Lyrics) Stephen Bray is thrilled to be making his Broadway debut with The Color Purple. After beginning music studies with private instruction in Detroit, Bray continued training at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Working with Madonna, he wrote and produced many of her top-ten recordings, including “Angel,” “Into the Groove,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” “True Blue” and “Express Yourself.” Performing with Breakfast Club, he earned a Grammy nomination for Best New Artist and a top-ten single. He has composed and produced for multiplatinum artists including The Jets, Gladys Knight and Kylie Minogue. Film and television projects include Beverly Hills Cop II, Who’s that Girl?, All About the Benjamins, and the theme for PBS’s California Connected. Stephen is developing artists for
his Soultone label and looks forward to more musical theatre. He would like to thank his daughter Milena for her eternal patience and his family for their continuing support.

When the lines between predator and prey blur, the power of women’s strength rises from the shadows in this fearless adaptation of Bram Stoker’s iconic DRACULA.
A visceral, sensual, and utterly unexpected journey into the heart of darkness, this Dracula illuminates the resilience of the feminine spirit. Created by the powerhouse duo of Vanessa Severo (Frida…A Self Portrait) and Joanie Schultz, the classic narrative is reclaimed, revealing a Dracula you’ve never seen before. Provocative and pulsing with new life, “it’s a Dracula that will surprise, delight and frighten — even the most veteran horror fans.” – Rick Pender, City Beat, Cincinnati.

“My students were deeply moved by the show, and so passionate about how much it meant to them. Most of my students live in the same community as the playwright . The show opened up a deep discussion about family and community and living our dreams. They continue to talk about the show and discuss its themes long after seeing it. KCRep is always going to be on my list of priority field trips because of the lasting effects it has on my students.” — Teacher who brought students to see Broke-ology
As our world grows more complex, we want to empower young people to feel free and creative, full of confidence and spirit to express themselves and feel strong. We want them to laugh and feel joy, learn about and feel on behalf of others, and know their own value in their world as smart, curious, creative and empowered individuals. KCRep seeks to play a positive role in the life of every student we encounter in a workshop or in the theatre. The arts open up expression, fuel belonging, and make connections. The arts meet the fragile, but deep, spirit of each young person — naturally open-hearted and bright-minded.
Summer Theatre Camp welcomed both middle and high schoolers for wild and wonderful opportunities to explore theatre through scene work, mask masking, movement and much more. Taught by professional actors, the joy in the room was palpable and meaningful. They hate to say goodbye!
“Thank you for this summer. I had a great time with everyone. I came out of myself and felt very free in this class. “ — Summer Theatre Camper
“My middle schoolers LOVED Emma. The whole process was so smooth. They were so excited to talk to the cast and crew, too.”
once
— Teacher who brought students to see Emma
7,200 students — from 3rd grade through college from all over the region — saw a show as a part of the Student Matinee Series during KCRep’s 2024/25 season. Over 40% benefitted from our STARS fund. Without exception, a morning field trip experience is rich and alive. Over 220 students from Kansas City, KS saw Nathan Louis Jackson’s beautiful play about a KCK family, Broke-ology. The connections and emotions were powerful. The laughter, sighs, tears (yes) and applause for Once, Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill, A Christmas Carol and Emma were overwhelming. We never know when a song, a character, a sentence or a scene will spark a young heart and mind to understand themselves better. But we are here for it. Always.
To learn more about a workshop or matinee, please reach out to Melinda, Director of Education, at mccrarym@kcrep.org.
