Welcome to School of Rock at Starlight— where the power of music meets the power of community!

This high-energy production is always a crowd favorite, but tonight’s performance is something truly special. Not only is this show completely locally produced by our outstanding creative team, but it features an incredible band of student musicians— each one hailing from right here in the Kansas City metro. These talented young artists are living proof of what happens when passion, opportunity, and creativity collide. They are the heartbeat of this show, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to have them on our stage.

School of Rock is more than a musical about kids learning to shred on stage. At its core, it’s a story about self-expression, finding your voice, and building confidence through art. It’s about the moments when we break out of expectations and discover our own rhythm—something we at Starlight hope to inspire in every young person who walks through our gates.

Producing live theatre takes a village, and this performance is the result of countless hours from local artists, designers, crew members, educators, and staff—plus the support of audience members like you. When you choose Starlight, you’re not just attending a show; you’re investing in Kansas City’s creative future and supporting our mission to connect the community through live arts experiences that entertain, inspire, and engage.

So let’s get ready to rock! On behalf of everyone who made this production possible—thank you for joining us tonight and for cheering on the next generation of Kansas City talent.

Rock on and enjoy the show!

Warm regards,

ONE OF A KIND CRAFTSMANSHIP

Starlight Theatre’s legacy began on June 3, 1950, with the premiere of Thrills of a Century, a vibrant historical pageant celebrating Kansas City’s centennial.

Thousands of attendees came together nightly for the production, which featured hundreds of local citizens in its cast. The overwhelming success of the event highlighted the city’s appetite for a dedicated performing arts venue, leading to the establishment of the notfor-profit Starlight Theatre Association of Kansas City, Inc., which has upheld this legacy for seven and a half decades.

Starlight is a gift to Kansas City, that’s what it is. We have this lovely, lovely theatre that anyone can choose to come out to, to see professional live entertainment. I just say thank you. I’m so glad it’s here.

Since 2006, Starlight has proudly awarded Vincent Legacy Scholarships to middle school students throughout the Kansas City metropolitan area.

Established with a generous contribution from longtime Starlight supporters Greg and Rebecca Reid, the scholarships provide BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) youth with funds to pursue professional training and experience the life-expanding possibilities of the performing arts.

Please help us congratulate this year’s recipients!

Makenna Holmes Bernard Campbell Middle School

“I would like to become more confident in the roles that I get, and work on my versatility as a performer. Even If Theater isn’t my future career path, this scholarship will help me with many life skills like: Confidence, Communication, Problem Solving, A good self-image, Teamwork, and Many more!”

Maia Moses Clark Middle School

“Performing arts are important to me because they allow me to be creative, connect with others, and share stories. One day, I hope to inspire younger kids who love dance and music just as much as I do.”

Harleigh Reed Raytown South Middle School

“Performing makes me really happy, and I want to work hard to become more confident on stage and try new things that will help me grow.”

Emily Solis Mill Creek Middle School

“I would like to improve my knowledge about theatre and gain the skills necessary to perform in several venues locally and internationally.”

Julissa

Sumner Academy of Arts & Science

“I try every single day to share my talents. It does take time and it is a slow process but I do know that I will leave some type of mark on people whether it’s just one person at a time or many people.”

ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER (Music) has composed the scores of some of the world’s most famous musicals. From Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat (1969) to Cinderella (2021), his work has been consistently seen on world stages. Before the COVID pandemic hit, Lloyd Webber had shows continually running in the West End for 48 years and on Broadway for 41. When Sunset Boulevard joined School Of Rock, CATS and The Phantom Of the Opera, he equalled Rodgers & Hammerstein’s record of four shows running simultaneously on Broadway. He is one of the select group of artists with EGOT status, having received Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards.Lloyd Webber owns seven London theatres, including the iconic London Palladium and Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. Over the past three years the latter has been completely restored and renovated at a cost of over £60 million. It is one of the biggest projects ever undertaken by a private theatre owner in recent times. His mantra that every penny of profit made from his theatres is ploughed back into the buildings has meant that considerable work has been undertaken across his theatre portfolio during the pandemic, including the complete remodelling and reseating of the Gillian Lynne. Lloyd Webber is passionate about the importance of musical education and diversity in the arts. The Andrew Lloyd Webber Foundation provides 30 performing arts scholarships every year for talented students with financial need and supports a range of projects such as the Music In Secondary School Trust and commissioning research into diversity in theatre. Andrew Lloyd Webber was knighted in 1992 and created an honorary life peer in 1997. To mark his 70th birthday, his bestselling autobiography Unmasked was published by Harper Collins in March 2018.

SHARE OUR SPOTLIGHT

Starlight and Variety KC have partnered on numerous initiatives over the years.

Starlight underwent a $3.5 million dollar improvement project in 2020, leveling walkways and making our historic venue more welcoming to the ADA community. That same year, we also installed communication and sign language boards throughout the venue, and Variety KC began to provide sensory bags that are available for checkout at our performances, too.

In February of this year, we were able to build on our relationship with Variety KC by hosting the Family Sweetheart dance in Starlight’s Applause Club. All Variety KC families, volunteers, and supporters were invited to attend an afternoon of dancing, friendship, and smiles. It was a magical afternoon and one we won’t soon forget.

This is just the beginning, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds. Starlight strives to provide an inclusive environment for all Kansas Citians. Being an outdoor venue and with a variety of programming for all ages and walks of life, we want to be the first families think of when they want to enjoy accessible, live entertainment. Through our partnership with Variety KC, we know that dream is a possibility.
