Welcome to Come From Away!

Tonight, you’ll journey to the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, where, on September 11, 2001, 38 planes were unexpectedly diverted. The story captures the unprecedented events that followed, as the town’s residents opened their hearts and homes to more than 7,000 stranded passengers, turning a national tragedy into a remarkable testament to humanity.

Inspired by real events, Come From Away often resonates deeply with audiences. We recall where we were on that fateful day nearly 23 years ago and the profound sense of community we relied on in the days that followed. Today, when this story of kindness and resilience comes to life on stage, I am reminded of the impact we can have when we come together in times of need—despite our differences.

At our theatre, we are dedicated to connecting our community together through live arts experiences that entertain, inspire, and engage. Come From Away allows us a moment to reflect on the spirit of unity, kindness, and the enduring strength of the human spirit through the magic of live theatre. It reminds us that even in the darkest times, there is light to be found in the connections we make, the respect we extend, and in the care we show one another.

Tonight, I hope you will open your hearts to the message of what it looks like to be the best of us that this musical so beautifully conveys.

Thank you for choosing Starlight – a uniquely Kansas City tradition of music and theatre under the stars! On behalf of everyone here, thank you for supporting live theatre and the power of storytelling. Your presence and support mean the world to us.

THE

GRUFFALO’S

CHILD

MARCH 1, 2025

One wild and windy night the Gruffalo’s Child ignores her father’s warnings about the Big Bad Mouse and tiptoes out into the night. She follows snowy tracks and encounters all sorts of woodland creatures, including a debonair snake, eccentric owl and a cunning fox.

But the Big Bad Mouse doesn’t really exist, does he? And what will the Gruffalo’s Child do when she finds him?

UNDERNEATH A MAGICAL MOON APRIL 5, 2025

A reimagining of Peter Pan as told by Wendy Darling. Wendy gazes out at the night sky dreaming of blue lagoons, magical moons and most of all, stories. And tonight, there’s magic in the air…

Fly with Wendy and her brothers as they create the world of Neverland, where time stands still and the impossible seems possible. Even everyday objects become extraordinary under the magical moon. A sparkling new production scored with exquisite live music and songs, enthralling movement and a sprinkle of fairy dust.

DEVELOPING FUTURE LEADERS

The workforce of the future is ever evolving – as are the required skillsets. To keep up with the change in trends, employers today are placing greater strategic value on employing creative workers.

That’s why initiatives like the Bob Rohlf Internship program are so important. Paid arts internships are rare, and Starlight interns gain hands-on, real-world experience while building the highly sought-after skills of today’s employers.

“I learned a great deal about the industry and am walking away with a lot of skills and materials I can provide to future employers. [My internship] allowed me to further develop a well-rounded set of skills and knowledge.”

When you donate to Starlight’s Annual Gala, you develop future leaders through programs like this. With every step forward, we’re Breaking Ground.
