A word from the editor Welcome one and all to the March edition of the Ilfracombe Magazine, your free monthly guide to the best in business and entertainment our fair town has to offer. As the year marches on - and with covid restrictions set to be ditched altogether (if the figures and politics allow) the town is busy readying itself for the upcoming tourist season. It’s a tricky one to call this year - if restrictions are removed, will everyone hop on the first flight to Spain to soak up the sun? Or have the past two years of wonderful staycations driven people to explore more of their home country rather than travel abroad? I honestly don’t know, but I suspect it will be somewhere in between and, regardless of what happens, I know Ilfracombe will shine whatever the weather. We have a fantastic host of great, positive stories to read this month! Our local theatres have secured not one, not two, but three amazing musicals in the coming months. The town has a new art gallery with two very enthusiastic managers and we also have some much-needed new play equipment at one of the town’s parks. The story that most struck a nerve with me, however,

was that of Ilfracombe Youth Football Club’s hunt for dedicated volunteers to help ensure its survival in the future. Ilfracombe, like many seasonal coastal resorts, is built on community spirit and the hard work - often behind the scenes - of locals who care deeply about the town’s propserity. I’m not talking about our economy, although obviously that is important, but rather the wellbeing of its

5

residents. Be it sports clubs, community action organisations, gardening groups, mens sheds or toddler clubs - they all service a vital purpose and are run entirely on goodwill. If you are able to help out somwhere like the Youth Football Club, then please get in touch - you won’t regret it!

8 Theatres welcome three musical smash hits finalist Niki

North Devon’s theatres have bagged two weeklong musicals to the stage this Spring Season, plus another smash hit in the summer. Audiences can enjoy the legendary Blood Brothers in March, funfilled musical Dreamboats & Petticoats in April, and Footloose, based on the 1980s screen sensation, in July. Willy Russell’s legendary musical Blood Brothers tells the captivating and moving tale of twins separated at birth, who grow up on opposite sides of the tracks, only to meet again with tragic consequences. Few musicals have been received with such acclaim as this multi-award-winning show. Former X Factor

Evans returns to the iconic role of Mrs Johnstone, and starring alongside her will be the touring circuit’s alltime favourite Mickey, Sean Jones, who will be returning to the role for what will be his final ever tour in Blood Brothers. The show is opening at the Theatre Royal Windsor ahead of a 16 week UK tour. Blood Brothers is at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple from Tue 15 – Sat 19 March 2022, with matinees on Wed, Thur, and Sat. Tickets start at £22. Dreamboats & Petticoats is a jukebox musical full of classics. Inspired by the latest release in the series of smashhit, multimillion selling Dreamboats and Petticoats

albums, Bringing On Back The Good Times is filled with wit, charm and songs from the golden era of Rock ‘n Roll. It’s time to shake off those blues and Rock ‘n Roll like never before! The show is at the Queen’s Theatre in Barnstaple Mon 4 – Sat 9 April, with matinees on Wed and Sat. Tickets are priced from £18. Summer is set to sizzle this year when Footloose comes to town. The show brings the incredible Jake Quickenden as loveable cowboy Willard, and the legendary Darren Day. Based on the 1980s screen sensation which took the world by storm, Footloose sizzles with spirit, fun and the best in UK musical talent. With cutting edge modern choreography, you’ll enjoy classic 80s hits including Holding Out for a Hero, Almost Paradise, Let’s Hear It For The Boy and of course the unforgettable title track Footloose. Tickets can be booked on the Queen’s Theatre website at queenstheatrebarnstaple.com, or by phoning the Box Office on 01271 316523 or stopping by the theatre. The Box Office and phone lines are open (Mon-Sat 10am4pm).

10 youth football club appeals for volunteers

Ilfracombe Town Youth Football Club is on the hunt for dedicated volunteers to help keep the successful organisation running. The club, which is separate to the town’s senior football team at Marlborough Park, works closely with the senior team to support grassroots football in Ilfracombe. Many of the under 16s home games are played at Marlborough park to prepare the players for adult football and many teams are mixed for both boys and girls. There are currently six different age groups in the youth club, all of which

are run solely by volunteers and parents. Club chairman Charlotte Overney said: “We are very thankful as we have been lucky over the years to be sponsored for new kits by local businesses such as Jamie Brown Roofing, Coversure and the Lions and recently been supported by Tesco to purchase training equipment so we can provide the best training available to the children of Ilfracombe. To keep the club running next season we need motivated volunteers to come on board with the committee and development of future

coaches to ensure we can keep all age groups coming through. The club will support the development of coaches and fund any training courses required to get the relevant FA qualification with the agreement that the coach will stay with the team through the year groups.” Anyone who is interested in joining the committee for 2022/23 season is asked to contact Charlotte Overney on ckoverney@gmail.com or 07968 098582 or Richard Hopson on richardho@ coversure.co.uk or 07812 027257.

Shop from bygone era...

This photo from the wonderful archives of Ilfracombe Museum shows a now lost part of town – the Arcade, and you can see shop numbers 12 and 13, Twiss and Sons. They sold souvenir booklets, photographs and town guides – must-have items for visitors to our busy seaside town in the late 19th century. The Twiss business was actually run by a widow, Mary Twiss, from Cambridge, and her sons, who moved here in the 1880s. Business was good and they opened a second shop in the High Street. However disaster struck in 1896 when the Great Fire of Ilfracombe tore through the Arcade and destroyed it; the Twiss family

lost five properties. Incredibly, they were able to print a souvenir guide to the fire within days of the event! Things did not go well in the early 1900s however. Sadly the effects of the First World War were a hammer blow to the Twiss business, as most tourist trade drained away from August 1914 onwards. Mary’s son Walter served at the Front and so did her nephew, taking vital manpower from the business, although thankfully they both survived. Twiss continued until at least 1927 but then disappeared from our High St. And the Arcade itself, despite being rebuilt after the 1896 fire, would be lost in a second disastrous fire in 1985.

New art gallery set to make a splash A new art gallery has opened in the space formerly occupied by Driftwood Contemporary at St James Place. Magenta Fine Art opened at the beginning of October 2021 with the building receiving a fresh lick of paint and bright new signage, signalling a shining beacon of change. Gallery manager Alix McDonald said: “After the past few years of restrictions, it’s important to enjoy the things we took for granted before, so we want to make coming into the gallery an enjoyable and memorable

experience. We have a phenomenal collection of contemporary artworks on display here in the gallery with access to an even larger portfolio including; original paintings, hand finished limited editions and sculpture. Genres include street art, mixed media, traditional landscapes, unique cityscapes, and figurative artworks. We stock work by internationally acclaimed artists such as Mr. Brainwash, Scottish art royalty Jack Vettriano of ‘The Singing Butler’ and many more.” Magenta Fine Art is open all year round.

22 new play equipment & trees for local park

A brand new climbing frame has been installed in Oxford Park thanks to funding from local developments. Following a consultation by North Devon Council (NDC) with a group of school children and local councillors in 2019, it was agreed that the type of equipment currently situated in Oxford Park play area was not suitable for the age range of the children wishing to use the park. A survey showed that the children’s preferred type of equipment would be a climbing wall. So plans were put forward to remove some fitness equipment which had very little use and were in a poor condition and install a new climbing frame which could be used by children ranging in age from 6 to 14. As well as the new play equipment, two fruit trees have

been planted in the middle section of the play park, just outside the play area boundary. The tree planting is part of a wider scheme to grow more tree saplings in NDC maintained parks and open spaces across the district, to help increase local environmental quality and biodiversity levels. Lead member for the Environment at North Devon Council, Councillor Netti Pearson, says: “I am delighted that the NDC Parks team engaged with Ilfracombe’s Youth Council to find out what type of equipment they would like to see installed in this play park and then identified a suitable funding stream to enable this to happen. This is what our district council is all about - working in partnership to identify and provide what the community needs.

I applaud the planting of more trees in our parks. This is a really positive step by the Parks team towards implementing the council’s environmental aspirations to increase carbon absorption, helping to mitigate the effects of climate change and restore our damaged natural environment – issues which affect us all.” The play equipment was installed thanks to funding from a Section 106 agreement. This is an agreement between a developer and a local planning authority about measures that the developer must take to reduce their impact on the community. Open space funding is often intended for projects such as parks and play areas, but can also be used for community buildings and other similar projects.

Cat of the month! Autumn Barnstaple and District Hello I’m Autumn a very cute, very cuddly and very friendly special 8 month old. I’ve had a bit of hard start to life and have been cared for by the lovely people at Cats Protection for the last 3 months. I love to purr, love a lap, love to play (tunnels are my favorite) and I love to chat with you too. I’m looking for a very special home as I do have some needs, I am likely to need ongoing Vet care with costs and I could have a limited life. I am looking for a lovely household, maybe a little quieter with older children and as me as the only cat in the house. Could you please give me a second chance of a loving new home?
