Obituary Kali Salaam Cuffee was born in Palo Alto, California on March 25, 1971 to the union of Raheem Abdulrahim and Cherry Douglas. Kali, nicknamed by her father “Toochie” grew up second to the eldest of five (two brothers and three sisters); she credited her early life with instilling a love of making others feel beautiful.

Toochie grew up in East Palo Alto and graduated from Carlmont High School in 1991. After graduating, she had her first daughter Heavenly Ronnae Meacham.

She enrolled in Fremont Beauty College and graduated in 1993. Toochie worked at The Essence of It in Newark, California. Toochie also opened and managed her own salon, Y’Envi Hair Designs in Hayward.

Toochie loved to travel. In her young adulthood she went to McNiel, Arkansas accompanied by her late grandmother, Ardean Brown for one of their many family reunions. She even vacationed in Jamaica with close girlfriends.

Toochie met her first husband and close friend, Alfred ‘Al’ Brown in 1981 when they were classmates together in middle school in East Palo Alto. They married in 1993 and had one son; De’Maurier Rashad Brown.

After the two divorced, Toochie met and married Robert Brooke Cuffee in 1998, with whom she would have three more children; Faith, Grace, and Cyrus.

In 2001 Toochie and her eldest sister Pleshette Robertson, and their families relocated to Sacramento to purchase a home. She immediately began a career as a third generation hairstylist by landing a position at Another Look Beauty & Barber Salon where she became extremely close with owners Robert and Tracy Brown. It was Toochie and Pleshette’s first priority to find a church home and family to become a part of in their relocation to Sacramento, CA. She discovered Genesis Church in South Sacramento through a client of hers from Another Look. She was involved and loved singing in the mass choir.

official name of her new business idea; at that time which was and is currently Sac Cultural Hub. Toochie was responsible for writing an online column for Sacculturalhub.com in 2004 called “JustSimplyBeautiful.com”. The column provided solutions and tips on beauty, hair care, cosmetics, style, fashion, and skin care. Toochie was featured in the November 2008 issue of The Sacramento Magazine for a one page spread under “They’ve Got Style”.

In November 2001, Toochie was instrumental in helping her sister Pleshette, in finalizing the

Obituary Company events such as The Hub “Choice” Models while choreographing fashion shows at Rick Warren Media Company Black Expo. In 2004, Toochie and her husband Robert operated TooChiefs Professional Beauty and Barber Salon where they successfully managed an apprenticeship program.

Toochie perfected her craft in the Cosmetology industry working with many celebrity stylists and photographers. She worked on the set of major magazine ads with photographer Keif Savage.

Toochie’s motto was “Natural…Sexy…You!” She specialized in extreme extensions, signature styles, colors, and designer haircuts.

Toochie was an incomparable beautiful woman who participated and competed in numerous fashion and hair show events in Atlanta, Sacramento, and The Bay Area. Toochie’s clientele included celebrity wives of the Oakland Raiders and Golden State Warriors.

Toochie loved to give a unique hairstyle to the faces of Obituary 21 Homegoing Celebration: Kali Salaam Cuffee (1971-2021) Obituary her clients. Toochie’s clients were unbelievably loyal. She once stated: “I had a client who came all the way from Virginia to get her hair trimmed!”

Toochie expanded her talents to team up with her brother James Gilbert who is a barber/stylist known as BrandNewJames. They collaborated on major fashion projects which offered complete makeover packages. Toochie also partnered with Khiry Malik of Magic Eye Photography and M.O.B. Models ran by Tanisha Broadway.

She had a strong love and ear for music. She was a very strong believer and supporter of her sister GiGi’s music since her debut as the TurfChick maturing into her present day stage name, MotherGoat. Toochie juggled her talents and passions at an amazing pace to handle the mix of being a wife, parenting, and working in the salon. She was blessed with five children and four grandchildren and one on the way.

Toochie managed to extend the greatest of care and

gentle understanding of the needs of others in the family and her extended family of nieces, nephews and cousins. She had tremendous compassion and generosity when it came to her family in making sure their needs were met.

In 2018, Toochie began to suffer from major health issues and was diagnosed with Stage 4 Ovarian Cancer in August 2020. Within the past year of Toochie’s illness, she grew even closer to her children, especially her precious daughters who remained steadfast as her 24-hour caregivers. Some of her favorite gospel songs were “Never Would of Made It by Marvin Sapp” and “I Won’t Complain”, by Paul Jones. One of Toochie’s post on Facebook stated: “ I may not be rich in possessions…But I’m abundantly rich in family. My gratefulness started like this today.

Thank you Father.” followed by her favorite scripture Psalm 23.

Toochie passed away peacefully at home with an entourage of family and tremendous love on June 21, 2021, at the age of 50. Although we are extremely saddened by losing her physically, our memory of this phenomenal woman will always be cherished by her mother, Cherry Douglas; her father, Raheem Abdulrahim; her husband Robert Cuffee and former husband Alfred Brown; her children Heavenly and spouse Kameron and children Jayla, Messiah, Kelise, Kai; son De’maurier and wife Quira and soon to be daughter Ayva; daughters: Faith, Grace and son Cyrus; her eldest sister, Pleshette and spouse Charles with their children Shanaya, Stephanie, Starr; her younger sisters Raisha and Gabrielle; her brother, Alfonse and his children Nia, Khalia, Chase, Tae; her youngest brother James and wife Mariah and children Javin and Enzo; with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. To the most beautiful woman in the world, the most precious gift the lord ever allowed in my life. I will truly miss you. I never enjoyed life until I got with you. You taught me about the greatest emotion that we have and we enjoyed it together. We enjoyed spontaneity oh my God. I will never enjoy life without you. I hate everything about life without you, there were so many things that we done together and I can only say to the Lord and the world to know that you were a great woman and I will forever hear the sweetest words you would say hi Robert and I knew that everything was going to be alright and for now I must say goodbye my love. It hurts so much to let you go and I hope and pray that one day I will see you again until the Se´ La Ve. To have been around Kali Cuffee is like being on a rollercoaster, she’s up and down but always worth it. To think of Kali Cuffee is to think of giving, trust, and happiness. To see Kali Cuffee is to have seen a fly, confident, strong woman who never wanted to be seen unpresentable. She always had to look AMAZING! It wasn’t a hobby it was a lifestyle. I am thankful that Kali Cuffee was able to pour herself into my siblings. I choose to not be sad when I think about you. I choose to be joyful, fly and kind.

Dear Toochie ... You gave so much life to me and my dreams. This was not supposed to happen to you.

Sissy your love was overflowing for the entire family and now you are officially in the heavens above. I’m going to miss our binge laughing until we cried tears. You are an angel in the heavens above with Mama, Gail, Aunt Mary, Aunt Blige, Uncle Tim and Big Mama. I can’t wait to join all of you for everlasting peace with you and Jesus forever.

You fought a long battle and you held strong to the end for your children and all of us. LOVE YOU SO MUCH! Your sissy Plee Mommy even through all your adversaries, your spirit remained unbreakable. Family Love Letters Toochie … Where do I start? 1982 Burgess Park swimming. Your laughter, your smile.... you kept that until you’re home going. I love you for loving me and making me a better man at the time I was on the “cuff” of going the wrong way.

Hey beautiful …I wasn’t able to experience the full Kali that my husband loved and cherished but I got a piece of it. I’m glad I had a few moments to witness a true angel on earth. At 33 weeks in the belly your granddaughter Ayva Kali woke me up this morning for her 3:30 AM bathroom breaks. I can only imagine you were having your own convo just you two. I love you and pray Ayva Kali has the same beautiful spirit that you have . Thank you forever and for everything. I’ll do my best for your boys and baby girl.

Everything you are will guide me now. Losing you but I feel like I’m gaining you. I can’t seem to accept it yet. It breaks me down but you seem so happy now I don’t know. I pray for us. I love you forever!

Family Love Letters The way I remember Toochie was the way we all thought about her.

The Toochie before any addiction which we all have. Toochie was a strong supporter; she was a lover and provider, a great mother, grandmother and a great aunt.

Toochie has shown me since a young age with grace and beauty.

What it’s like to take care of your family, your business and yourself.

She would do anything for anyone and any time. She left hard and hated to disappoint people. Toochie you are everything to this family and to your friends you will truly and never be forgotten EVER!! It’s 4L Stephanie Cherry - your niece My aunt Toochie was the most beautiful woman I ever saw. When I was younger, I would always love to come over to her house to help her with her little children. I loved that she loved kids. She ALWAYS wanted to ensure that we had a great childhood. She was my 2nd mom. When I got older and I started to see my aunt go off in the wrong direction, it made me VERY sad.

It was very difficult to witness my aunt in her last days, but I will say that she learned the truth before she passed and I pray that The Most High has mercy on her soul.

I love you so much mom. As time went on I understand that your life went downhill & being your youngest of 5. I wasn’t able to meet the Toochie that everybody older than me was able to. I thought preparing 10 months knowing it would be a 50/50 chance that you will pass away. I thought I would understand how it would feel losing a mom/losing you. But I had no idea I cried & hurt more than expected.

I wasn’t able to live with you as much as most kids my age were able to so I do feel that I am not hurting as much as a kid my age or even a family member older. I thought that I had fought the battle because the doctor said you had 2-3 weeks until you passed and you stayed way longer than that, thinking you were getting better when things were getting worse. And when you lose someone people would like to say “I know how it feels losing a mom“ when they didn’t lose theirs so they don’t know how it would feel until it actually happens. We all knew that your time was going to come soon but still unexpected & unbelievable. I wish I was able to meet the boss Toochie everybody talks about all the time. I miss you so much & when I meet you again it will be the best thing ever. ¨Yes Jesus loves me¨ ¨Goodnight god bless you I love you¨ Cyrus

Toochie!! Since I came around the family at a young age being best friends with your beautiful niece Stephanie I have always admired you and looked up to how beautiful and how much of a boss you are.

Always wanting to run behind Stephanie to be next in line to get my hair done. You always had this beautiful smile and I would always be like yo auntie got a big ole booty lol. You always kept it so real and spoke your mind but in a gracious way. Always treating and making me feel welcomed when I came around! I’m sorry if I ever made you feel the opposite! I’m so grateful for the different phases and transitions of my relationship with you that I experienced from a young teen to a grown woman! One thing that I will always admire about you is YOU period because you are that ONE! I have much gratitude knowing that when Enzo gets older I can show him videos and pictures of you two and how he was a mini manman just as you would always tell me! Our last conversation was me showing you videos and photos of man man and I trip to Costa Rica and you were just smiling! When you told me how bomb I looked, I knew I was doing something right because hearing that come from one of the baddest to do it was everything! They say Tyra Banks was the queen of the smize but truthfully you were in my eyes! I will forever cherish your sweet spirit and impact you had and always will have on my life! Thank you for leaving wisdom, game, and an example of a nurturing motherhood. Thank you for being a true Proverbs 31 woman!

Family Love Letters

Toochie was the most fun Auntie you could ask for growing up.

She never yelled at me in a mean aggressive tone, if she ever did it would break my heart because that just wasn’t her style (lol).

She could never stay mad at anyone, it was always pure love in her heart. She had the most vibrant, up vibe to her personality that made you want to be just like her. Toochie and Big Rob always treated me as if I was their own, besides spending the night almost every weekend, I went everywhere with them. I would cry so hard weekends I couldn’t come over. I grew up so close to my little cousin Faith bc of all the memories and fun we had. I remember she’d take me home after the weekend in her white BMW, dancing and playing her Kirk Franklin or Mary Mary and I’d just look over to stare at her and get this feeling of coolness like man, “I want to be like thisssss when I get older.” Effortlessly influential. Just a simply beautiful woman who never had to try hard. I’ll always cherish the time we spent together as Auntie and Niece. You gave me so much love Toochie. You gave everyone so much love. I love you forever.

Sis! … OMG Toochie I never met anybody as lovable and pure hearted as you. The day I met you in the shop I knew we would always be sisters. Then you came and joined my church so I knew you were godsend. I know you are in heaven but your love was so strong and you impacted so many people it feels like you never left. The last time we saw each other you told me “ok sis I’ll be waiting for you because when I get to heaven I got to do God’s hair” we laughed but I believed that will be the best haircut he will ever have! love you so much r.i.h my sista. ???

We are deeply saddened about the loss of our beloved Kali “Toochie” Cuffee and send our deepest sympathies from the Another Look family. As we continue to pray for your family, we remember the good times and the memories Toochie left with us.

Toochie was very instrumental in the growth of Another Look Hair Salon. She started working with us over 20 years ago. She walked in to check us out, and the rest was history. From day one, we knew we were working with somebody special.

We will never forget the warmth her smile brought to the salon each and every day.

She was more than a hairstylist; she was a businesswoman and a talented creator. Everyone she touched left that salon feeling happy and looking fabulous. We would look over at Toochie with that “You did that” look, and we would get that “you know it” wink every time. It was a beautiful time. We just had too much fun creating styles and learning the business together.

We are all better people for knowing Toochie; we were family. She had Pleshette coming in, bringing the energy, and always coming up with creative ideas. Before you knew it, Toochie had Ms. Cherry in the salon doing amazing work and Chief over in the front cutting with the other barbers. All her kids grow up in that salon with us. She loved her kids, and they loved her. If she wasn’t working, she had those kids.

Her Another Look family will all miss her dearly.

However, she will live forever in our hearts, and every person she touched will have great memories to get them through this tough time.

Job well done, Toochie and may your soul rest in heaven.

It is heartfelt and deeply tragic when you lose someone very close to you. Life is brothers and sisters. So loving and protecting. Who Never carry the spirit of failure or have thoughts of giving up. With spirits to protect, provide, and pray for one another as we live this thing called life. This sister and brother thing was our favorite part about life.

Choices, Chances, changes You must make the choice to take A chance or your life will never change.

Life is this entire room. Life is us coming together. To cry, To Laugh, To reminisce, To praise over a life so Magnificent, So Angelic, So Protected, So Fierce, So Fire, So Strong, So peaceful, So talented, So gifted, So smooth, So sleek, So real, So Resilient, So lit, So fun, So raw, So Fearless, so majestic, So godly, So Upper Echelon, A Boss, A Queen, A King, A protector, A Goddess, A God! So what is life????

Life is living until GOD calls on your name.

It’s making sure you do everything you were set out to do….. and KALI did.
