The Solar Eclipse

A solar eclipse is when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, casting a shadow on Earth that either fully or partially blocks the Sun’s light in some areas.

There are between 2 and 5 solar eclipses a year. There are 4 types of solar eclipses; a partial eclipse, a Total eclipse, annular eclipse, and a hybrid eclipse Solar eclipses are rare because of the alignment of orbits. The orbits of the Earth around the sun and the moon around the Earth are not perfectly aligned. The moon's orbit is inclined at about five degrees tilt to Earth's orbit around the sun.

On April 8th, there was a solar eclipse that took place across the United States. In Connecticut, our solar eclipse only covered 95%. But places like Texas had a total eclipse.

At Franklin, we had a viewing party at the playground. In places like Buffalo, NY, thousands of people flocked to the area because it was in the line of totality. Many areas had food trucks and even face painting to celebrate the special event.

The Cheer Team

This year, Franklin Elementary School had a cheer team because Mrs.Colletti decided that Franklin Elementary should have a cheer team so that us Franklin Falcons could have more excitement and cheerfulness.

Being on the Cheer Team was fun, we had our performances at every assembly and we were really good. Performing is really fun and it boosts our confidence and it also gives us time to just be who we really are.

Members of the Cheer Team were selected by having tryouts where we wore numbers then after a few weeks Mrs. Coletti wrote down the numbers of the students who made the cheer team.

We learned new cheers, lifts, jumps, tumbling and more. Cheer Team practice takes place at the end of the day where all the cheerleaders meet with Mrs. Colletti. We relax a bit, then we stretch, then we practice.

All the cheer team members are really excited and we hope to do it again next year!

THE NFL DRAFT

What is the NFL draft you might ask?! The NFL draft is where destiny is decided and where college players “go pro” and NFL teams get draft picks depending on how they do in the season, the worse they do, the better the pick and if they do good they get a worse pick. It's a bit confusing but you get used to it.

The Panthers had the first pick but ended up trading it to the Bears and the Bears drafted a QB, that QBs name is Caleb Williams from USC. Next, the Washington Commanders drafted another QB named Jaden Daniels, from Arizona State, which was a surprise (at least for me…) The next pick went to the Patriots, and guess who they drafted… ANOTHER QB named Drake Maye from UNC.

Next, the fourth pick went to the Cardinals; they drafted Marvin Harrison Jr, a wide receiver from THE Ohio State. Many people think he's going to be good because he is the son of the Football Hall of Fame wide receiver Marvin Harrison, who dominated with the Indianapolis Colts. Personally I think it's not about the name on the back of the jersey, I think it's all about his skills (well obviously…) People say that this was the best top 4 picks but to me it was just OK…

Football fans thought that there was a 50% chance that JJ McCarthy, from Michigan, would get drafted by the commanders, but he got drafted by the Vikings in pick 10.

One fun fact about the 2024 NFL draft is that a defensive player was pick #15, and that’s a high pick considering most teams pick offensive players first. The player was defensive end, Laiatu Latu, from UCLA.

Football training camps have begun, and it's definitely going to be a fun season come Fall.

WISH

Book\MovieReviews by TheHighFlyingNews

I rate would rate Wish 5 stars because it has a lot of action. For example, when the song “This is the thanks I get?” comes on he makes a lot of action and magic blast threw the scene like fireworks! Another reason why Wish is good is because it has good songs and beat for example, the song “The wish” she changes the song volume to the match her emotion. Lastly, there is a lot of plot twists including a betrayal that you would not expect.

COCO

Coco is about a boy named Miguel who loves music but his whole entire family (or so he thought) hates it. Miguel steals a famous guitar which turns him into a ghost and puts him into the land of the dead where he tries to reunite with a famous family member who happens to be a musician. Miguel’s adventure in the Land of the Dead has plenty of twists and turns to keep you guessing, and lots of fun music too!

An Interview with Santiago Piñeda and Miss Castañeda

Santiago and Miss Castaneda sat down and interviewed each other for the last edition of the High Flying News… here is their interview.

Miss Castaneda: Santiago, what do you want to be when you grow up?

Santiago Pineda: Well, I’m thinking a real estate agent, or something in education, either a history teacher or a historian, someone who studies the history of different cultures, I’m really interested in that.

Miss C: Thinking about all the time you’ve spent at Franklin, what sticks out as a memorable moment?

S.P: I have a few, all the field days have been memorable, and my first day here, making friends and growing up with them. Experiences new classrooms and environments every year, too!

Miss C What is the most valuable piece of advice you received as a student here at Franklin?

S.P. Someone, I can’t remember who said “Try your best, even though sometimes it will be hard.” And that always stuck with me.

Miss C: What is your favorite season and what does that say about you?

S.P: My favorite season is summer. I come from a tropical background, and it runs through my blood. I just love that you can do a lot more things in summer, and I love the sunsets and the beach.

Miss C: Since you travel a lot, where has been one of the best places you’ve visited?

S.P. Hawaii, when I went there I felt very comfortable and the vibe, the people. And the culture felt like home to me. I love tropical places so it really just felt like home, the beaches, the sunsets, were all amazing. It was very diverse and I just loved it.

Miss C: Where is place to visit that’s on your bucket list?

S.P: Greece, and the UK. I really like Europe, they have a lot of interesting things there, and I love European history. I like the Greek culture and oh, their food, it’s really good. And why England, well, I love the monarchy, I loved queen Elizabeth ( RIP) and just the beauty of Scotland (which is a part of the UK) and everything. England has a lot of history and I would like to visit to learn more.

An Interview with Santiago Piñeda and Miss Castañeda

Miss C: Where do you see yourself in 20 years?

S.P. Oh my gosh, probably married, and having my first child or having a few kids. Living my life as an adult, and paying taxes.

Santiago Pineda: What is the difference between a math coach and a math teacher?

Miss Castaneda: So a Math Coach is someone who works with teachers on refining their teaching and helps teachers use their data to help inform their instruction. As a Math Coach, I also work at a district level to help implement structures and systems to increase overall math achievement. And a math teacher works in one classroom and teaches students Math.

S.P:Why did you decide to become a math coach after being a teacher a few years ago?

Miss C: I became a Math Coach because I wanted to take on more of a leadership role within the district, and when I applied I really didn’t even think I would get it! I’ve enjoyed the opportunity to work in a district role and work in different buildings and with lots of different teachers and students.

S.P:What are your thoughts on the Franklin school environment?

Miss C: Franklin is a special place, I really have enjoyed getting to know the students and their families. I love going to the school events and connecting with families and I know there’s many teachers here that also go to a lot of the events and it really makes Franklin feel like a family.

S.P. Where did you get your inspiration to be a math buff?

Miss C: Well, believe it or not, I did not love Math when I was in school, it really just never made sense to me. When I became a Math Coach, and I was really able to focus on just math instruction, I realized that Math can be taught in a way that helps students really understand what they are learning. The Math tutors and I have a saying, “We don’t teach you how to do math, we teach you how to understand it.”

S.P: If you were to be a president of the United States, which one would you be and why?

Miss C: Oh man, well there hasn’t been a woman President yet, just VP Kamala Harris, so I don’t know if I would want to be any of them. But if I had to choose, I suppose President Obama, because he stood for hope, he actually wrote a book called “The Audacity to Hope” and I think he inspired people and that’s pretty great.

An Interview with Santiago Piñeda and Miss Castañeda

S.P: Why do you not call yourself a swiftie even though you love Taylor Swift?

Miss C: Haha, okay well I’m not sure what the line between being a fan and a “swiftie” is BUT I think for me I am not obsessed with her, I love her music, I think she’s a great role model and she has a great heart. Yes, I went to the Eras Tour concert, but it was the first time I saw her live. But honestly, there is nothing wrong with being a Swiftie! She has an extensive catalog of music and the best songs were never released on the radio so most people don’t even know her best songs!

S.P: What would your last meal be?

Miss C: Okay, well I love a good fancy meal so I would choose king crab legs, a nice steak, mashed potatoes or a baked potato, and the gorgonzola bread from Michael Jordan’s Steakhouse! SO GOOD.

S.P: Leonardo Dicaprio or Jennifer Aniston?

Miss C: Random, but I’d have to go with Leo only because of his range of characters he’s played throughout the years. Romeo, I mean, yeah, and then to play a frontiersman in The Revenant, Jay Gatsby, just shows his talent and his range.

S.P:Who is your favorite activist?

Miss C: There’s this place in Nairobi, Kenya called The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, and it is an organization that focuses on caring for and protecting the wildlife in Kenya. It was started by David and Daphne Sheldrick, and the main focus is the Orphans’ Project where keepers will care for young elephants, and other animals, and rehabilitate them so they can go back into the wild. I follow them on Social Media and the work they do is so amazing. One year for Christmas my sister fostered an elephant for me, his name was Barsalinga, and he’s been out in the wild for a while now but I saw a post the other day that he was hurt and he knew exactly where to go. The keepers saw him coming back to the conservatory and they were able to take care of him.

S.P: What is your favorite piece of advice someone gave you?

Miss C: So, I have to tell you a story because while I didn’t get traditional advice, I learned a valuable lesson that I carry with me everyday. When I was in college, at UCONN, I was part of this program called the HEART house, it was kind of like an internship, and the woman who ran it was named Dr. J. Well my senior year, the program was being shut down for whatever reasons, and I, along with many other interns, started a campaign to Save the Heart House because it was the most valuable part of my college experience. I wanted future students to benefit from the resources it offered. So, I started campaigning around campus, speaking to the administration about the benefits of the program and about Dr. J and what I learned is that if you really believe in something, you fight for it.
