Why Do Schools Have a Dress Code
By Lilliana Jean-BaptisteThere are eight elementary schools, two middle schools and two high schools in Stratford. Out of all those schools, only 4 of the elementary schools have a uniform policy. They are Franklin, Stratford Academy, Lordship and Chapel.
Schools like Lordship and Chapel have/had uniforms because they wanted to see if staff and parents liked the idea of having a uniform. In an article, it says “school leaders surveyed staff and parents to see if they like the idea of having a uniform. Chapel and Lordship parents and staff overwhelmingly said that they did. The survey shows 77 percent of staff and 64 percent of parents at Chapel school favour the uniform policy. At Lordship school, 94 percent of staff and 78 percent of parents support it.”
Uniforms were first introduced in charter schools. They did this because they did not want kids to tell the difference between ‘poor’ students on a scholarship and those who can afford private education. Another reason why schools have uniforms is for schools to have a safe environment. Also schools have uniforms because, like Mrs.Castaneda said, it shows you are a part of the school.
Franklin students have to wear a uniform, and the students hate it. Some people think it's reasonable to have it like Miss Castaneda, who says “I think uniforms are good for kids because kids might get bullied for what they wear and it shows you're a part of our school.” Others think it is bad having uniforms. A sixth grader, Noah, said, “my mom said that uniforms are actually more expensive than cheap.”
In conclusion, kids might hate Franklin for having a uniform that they might not even wear. But having a uniform is important to our school environment and safety.

The Lego Club
By: Max Rodriguez & Miss CastanedaThe Lego club is a club that meets every Wednesday at 3:15. The Lego club is run by Mr. Magera, a Math Tutor here at Franklin. The goal of the Lego club is to have fun and to have a creative mindset. Legos can teach you discipline and how to be organized. Mr. Magera said he started the club to help stimulate students’ creativity, and to allow students to learn about engineering. The lego club also helps students learn to collaborate with each other and to follow direction. He said, “I wanted to give students an opportunity to socialize with each other while also learning how to follow directions and build structures with legos. Besides, who doesn't love Legos!”
Mr. Magera creates fun challenges for the students to try. One challenge was trying to build a boat without instructions. Students had to think about the different structures of a boat and try to build one that could float. By not giving them any instructions, it was challenging but fun. One participant, Max said, “It was fun, but hard to complete. If you built it and it was too heavy, it would sink.”
Another challenge students had to complete was building a bridge. The goal was to build a bridge that could withstand the most weight.
The students in the Lego club are extremely thankful for Mr. Magera and this new club idea.
Stanley Cups: Are they worth it?
By Elayna SeabrookNowadays Stanley cups are very popular and all over social media. But the question is are they really worth the money? I’ve seen many Stanley’s online and have seen some cost up to $70 and I wonder if they're really worth the hype.
In my opinion I really don't think Stanley's are worth the price but I don't know because I've never had one. My sister got a Stanley a few months back and she really likes it, but she said while it was only about $35 it’s not really worth the price of it.
There are a lot of other water bottle brands that are just like Stanley’s such as Yeti, Hydroflask, HydraPeak, S’well, and Owala. Depending on the style, some of these can be around the same price of a Stanley.
Stanley cups have been around for a long time and were often used by construction workers and other labor workers. The Stanley became more popular in recent years because of Social Media and the new and stylish designs they’ve come up with.
While Stanley cups are extremely popular, even with our Franklin Staff, I think that most of the water bottles work the same and you don’t have to spend a lot of money for a Stanley!

Baked Sweet Potato
By Elijah LinaresYou will need:
● Butter
● Sweet potato
● Rosemary
● Thyme
● Salt
● Pepper
● Goya Adobo All Purpose
First you will have to butter the sweet potatoes. Then you have to wrap the sweet potato in tin foil. Preheat the oven to 270 degrees. When it's done preheating, put the potato in the oven for 5-10 minutes. When it's done cut it in half and let it cool.
Next, when the potato cooled down, you are going to hollow out one of the potatoes, then turn the in sides of the hollowed out potato into puree and put it into a bowl. Take the puree and mix it with thyme. Put the puree back into the potato and sprinkle some rosemary on top of the potato. Then put it back in the oven to cook for a few more minutes until crispy! Enjoy!
An Interview With. . . Mr. Benson
By: Santiago Pineda & Ethan Morocho AsmalMr. Benson is a teacher here at Franklin, he has been teaching for the last 9 years. He works with students in Grades 4-6 mostly, but makes an effort to get to know all the students. Our interview team sat down with Mr. Benson to ask him some questions about his career and also asked him to share some advice for the graduating 6th graders. Here are his answers…
Why Did You Decide to Make Special Education Your Career?
So originally, I was not in the education field, I was going to school for something else. I had a work opportunity come up and through that work opportunity, I found that I really enjoyed working with a younger population and with students with different learning styles. So it became a passion and I decided to change majors and change course and I went back to school for special education. But it was through like kind of a fluke. I took a job and I was like, wow, this is awesome.
If you won the lottery and decided to give up teaching, what would you do?
Travel the world, my man. Travel the world. I would love to see, hit all the continents, I would love to see different countries and see how the other world lives, like the other side of the world.
What inspires you?
You guys [the students]. Seeing you guys overcome difficult tasks, that gives me motivation to keep going. That gives me motivation not to give up and continue to do what I'm doing. So every day when I come here, I see you guys, you know, doing your best and trying your hardest. So that means, you know, if you guys are showing up, at least I could do a show up. So you guys inspire me.
What is your favorite quote from a person?
My favorite quote is this one right here on the wall, “Action is a foundational key to all success.” Without action, without putting in the work, how are you going to be successful? So, you have to put in the work in order to see results.
An Interview With. . . Mr. Benson
By: Santiago Pineda & Ethan Morocho AsmalWhat advice would you give to the sixth graders who are going to middle school?
All right, so the advice I would give you guys going to middle school would be, there's going to be a lot of distractions, right? There's going to be a lot of different influences going on up there, but you guys got to stay in the course, focus on the schoolwork, it gets a little bit more difficult, and just make good choices, make good decisions.
What are your interests besides teaching?
Travel. I also enjoy riding my motorcycle. With my helmet, always
How did you feel on your first day of teaching ever?
Nervous. I was really nervous because, you know, coming out of school, you're not always taught, like, real life situations. So, I knew how to give assessments, I knew other things but I feel like once you are really into the day to day things change so much and so fast, so i was just nervous, and like ehh, “can i do this?” but that quickly subsided and I love what I do.
What would your last meal be?
I’m a simple man, so if you give me a great hamburger and fries, I’m gonna be happy. I don’t need much.
