Many thanks for taking the time to read through our magazine which will let you know a little more about the work of hospital radio here in Milton Keynes and how to get the most from us.

Our aim is to provide entertainment to the patients of the hospital any time day or night in order to take their mind off being in the hospital and to help them on the road to recovery.

Our output isn’t restricted to within the hospital grounds as we also take part in a number of outside broadcasts each year as well as the more regular live commentary from every home game of the MK Dons.

Milton Keynes Hospital Radio has been a part of the life and times of the hospital since 1984 and although many things have changed over time our philosophy of being there for the patients remains.

In order for us to provide this service, we have a small group of hard-working volunteers who spend their time bringing together all the aspects of our service which includes equipment maintenance, presentation, fundraising, and programme production.

A CATCH UP WITH THE CEO CHIEF EXECUTIVE OF MKUH ON THE AIR...

oe Harrison, Chief Executive of MKUH, J has a lot on his plate. Not only is he the CEO of a busy hospital running under increasing pressure but he has introduced the fully digital ECARE system and is Dad to nineyear-old twins.

You could forgive him for being a little bit stressed, yet when he arrived at the door of our studio, he looks like he doesn’t have a care in the world, a beaming smile on his face and his sleeves rolled up to the elbow.

It’s not that he doesn’t care, quite the opposite. Prior to our show, he was stopped in the hallway by visitors who spotted his name badge. They were unhappy with something in the hospital and had a concern going forward.

Joe listened intently and promised them that he would look into it and get back to them.

Patient happiness is one of his top priorities, even our Vice Chairman has emailed him with concerns. It doesn’t stress him though, in fact, he revels in the challenge.

He hands over his 10 songs and I am quite impressed with the variety, John Lennon, Simon and Garfunkel, and Coldplay.

He preludes Faith by George Michael by reminiscing of evenings in the pub before realising he would have only been 17 at the time and changing his story with a giggle.

While the songs play, no questions are off limits as he openly answers questions about his home life and balancing raising twins with such a high profile job “like many parents, my wife and I have a system. I am often unavailable in the evenings as I like to go home to my family. My wife is as busy as I am, if not more so, meaning schedule is vital” The minutes fly by and almost as soon as it began, it is over. We let Joe go but not before we make him clear his schedule for the launch of our second studio.

I genuinely love coming to work” he tells Phil Thexton “I do something different every day so never really find myself sad. It’s not just me though, I have a fantastic team behind me”.

Turning his phone off as he enters the studio, we have his full attention. Clearly, he goes way back with Phil Thexton as they giggle about how difficult it has been getting a date that he is available.

INTERVIEWING THE INTERVIEWEE very Sunday afternoon Rose Marie takes E to the air for ‘Rose Marie on Sundays’ and interviews inspirational people from around the country.

Originally entitled ‘Local dreams’, Rose Marie aims to inspire those who are not achieving their dreams – not through lack of talent but lack of confidence, “Everyone has dreams. However, sometimes people do not know what steps to take to make their dreams a reality. This is the major reason why I preferred an interview show format because if one guest on my show can give encouragement or advice to a listener who uses it, then ‘Rose Marie on Sundays’ is a success” Sarah-Jayne convinced Rose Marie to take five minutes out of her ever-growing schedule in order to flip the tables and put the spotlight on her.

SJ: What made you join MKHR? RM: My husband has several health issues. I have spent quite a bit of time over the last five years at the MK Hospital. I had noticed that patients were listening to the hospital radio and then a presenter had come to my husband’s ward.

I saw the MKHRS exhibit in the lobby (the old lobby). I talked to the Chairman for a few moments and filled out an application.

SJ: When given the chance to do your own show, why interviewing people?

RM: My first position after the acceptation of my application was working on the Thursday night request team.

When I explained to friends, business acquaintances etc. that I volunteer as an MKHR presenter, people started to tell me ‘That’s cool. I wish I could do ....’

Some people had made their dreams reality, some were working on their dreams and some were looking for role models to help them make their dreams a reality.

That is when the concept of ‘Local Dreams’ (my original show title) started. I wanted to interview local people who made their dreams reality and how they did it. ‘Local Dreams’ evolved to ‘Rose Marie on Sundays’ as I was meeting people from all over the UK. Photo: Rose Marie behind the mic

I thought the presenters were professional radio presenters and thought no more about it. However, I belong to a public speaking organization. At one of our conventions, I met a lady who had just won the HBA Awards.

She explained about volunteering at the hospital radio. Shortly after our meeting,

SJ: How do you choose your guests?

RM: There are so many ways! I have had nearly 40 guests on my show. As part of my business, Unbeatable Dreams, I give keynote speeches and presentations throughout the UK. I use recommendations from people I know, who think they have an interesting topic that people want to hear about or people email in asking to be interviewed.

One guest was a result of me stepping into his shop, he was so passionate about his product that I knew he would be an excellent guest.

My number one criteria to be on Rose Marie on Sunday is that guests have to be passionate about the topic. I don’t mind if they are authors on their first book or tenth, people starting business ventures or struggling poets – if they are passionate, I’ll give them a platform.

SJ: On the spot: who has been your favourite guest and why?

RM: Haha, picking my favourite guest is like picking my favourite child. I have had so many wonderful guests on my show that I am currently in the middle of writing a book about my experiences including follow-ups of my guests.

Dons home game. Their commentary is also relayed on the ‘Soccer Sight’ service within the ground, bringing the action to the ears of those who are unable to see the game clearly due to visual impairment.

Jeff Newall, voted last season’s MK Dons Supporter of the Year, is a regular user of the service, both at StadiumMK and at away matches. Here he explains the benefits that the service brings to its users.

“Welcome to StadiumMK, wherever you’re listening – in the hospital or around the ground listening on Soccer-Sight…”

When I hear these words, it means it’s 2.55pm on a Saturday or nearly 7.45pm on a Tuesday and I’m sat in the Cow Shed waiting for kickoff. I’ve been lucky enough to benefit from MK Hospital Radio commentaries, usually provided by Martin and John, via SoccerSight since the service was introduced a few seasons ago – I tested it before it went live.

I’ve also heard them whilst in hospital over the years.

ground, in relation to the Home and Away ends; during the game, we’re not just told the ball is “down by the corner flag”, but which one (there are 4, after all!).

When I travel to away games, the number at which commentary is available seems to be dwindling. Whilst many are quite good, if a little biased, there have been some ‘interesting’ ones. Take the time we were told about the team playing in blue (one team was actually in red and white, the other in black!).

Then there was the time the player who apparently had the ball had been substituted 10 minutes earlier! Perhaps the most frustrating thing, though, is when commentary is only available in the Home end. No such problems at Stadium:MK, where the commentary is always fair, accurate, informative and available to Home and Away fans.

As I only have 5% sight in my good eye and watch the match through a monocle, the details provided by the commentary make a massive difference to my match-day experience. For instance, we’re always told where the commentary position is, both in relation to the part of the pitch (just level with the 18 yard box) and the location within the

Making a Lasting Power of Attorney puts you in control There is no specific age when you should consider making a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) as anyone can lose capacity at any time through illness or if injured in an accident.

What is important to note is that you can only set up an LPA when you have mental capacity. Once you’ve lost capacity, it’s too late!

Why do you need an LPA? Dagmara Kulczykowska, Head of Private Client Services explains why an LPA is so important. An LPA is a legal document in which you can appoint someone you trust to act on your behalf as your attorney if there comes a time when you cannot make decisions for yourself in conection with your property, financial affairs, health & welfare matters.

Without a formal LPA your relatives or those you

trust cannot manage your affairs even if it is to help you. If you do not have an LPA and you lose the ability to manage your own affairs then your assets will be frozen until a Court Order can be obtained.

It is therefore best to plan ahead and set up an LPA while you are still in good mental health, removing any future burden from your family.

How do you set up an LPA? In order for an LPA to be valid it must be done correctly and we can do this in 3 simple steps: 1. We will take your details during a meeting, by phone or email - whichever you prefer; 2. We will then meet you to explain and sign the paperwork. One of our Solicitors will act as your witness and Certificate Provider; 3. We will then submit the LPA for registration at the Office of the Public Guardian. Turnaround time for registration is approx 8-12 weeks.

Once these steps are completed the LPA is ready, giving you that peace of mind.

A BLAST FROM THE PAST...

have been presenting the Retro Show, Iyears currently on a Monday evening, for a few now. It’s more than just a show for me,

there!

it’s something I genuinely love doing.

I like to bring some of the older tunes to the listening audience because, for me, it’s like inviting my friends around to listen to some good music and having a bit of a chat. The only thing missing is the drink and nibbles.

The show flies by, with some fun trivia questions along the way and a bit of a discussion around past events thrown in too.

I hope the hour of nostalgia puts a smile on the patients faces and has hopefully provided some respite from focusing on their recovery.

Slowly I have started to feel more comfortable and now happily chat with sports journalists from The Sun, The Citizen and even CitiBlog – they are all just fans like me, albeit a lot more knowledgeable.

A GUEST PRESENTER AT STADIUM MK

O

rdinarily, all MK Dons games are presented by Martin Thorpe and John Creasey but, if John cannot make it, Martin will invite other presenters to come with him to the stadium. Sarah-Jayne, Breakfast on Broadway presenter, is a semi-regular guest to the games. She gave us a bit of an insight into what it’s like: “I remember the first time I ever attended an MK Don’s match with Martin. I was so excited when he asked me that I spent all day researching both teams but Martin advised against saying anything I wasn’t 100% sure of”. ‘The worst thing you can do is act like you know it when you don’t. Many of our listeners are big fans so will know if it’s not true.’

His advice stuck with me and, although I know a lot more now about the MK Dons than I did during this match (I am a self-appointed president of the Kieran Agard fan club), I never pretend to know as much as Martin and often ask questions.

After we have collected our tickets from the office, it’s off to set up the equipment. This is where I drive Martin mad as I don’t know his way of setting up so pull equipment out in the wrong order. He just laughs and adjusts things.

It takes five minutes and then it is into the press office to have a burger, a tea, and a catch up with the other journalists covering the match. As a trained journalist who aspired to work at a newspaper, these first meetings left me too nervous to speak.

The match begins and Martin starts his commentary. As an ex-referee and a trained commentator, Martin is in his element. Over the next ninety minutes, he commentates on all the action happening on the pitch.

He doesn’t only present back to the patients at the hospital but also for all the visually impaired fans within the stadium. Fans with a visual impairment can pick up a headset before sitting down and listen to our commentary to ensure they don’t miss out on any of the action.

I have been a listener back in the studio too and it’s presented in such a way that, if you close your eyes, you can imagine being at the ground.

I, however, am not nearly as flawless. As a regular Soccorsight listener, Jeff Newall says “John’s job is definitely safe”. I enter my bits of commentary and opinion – normally praising player Kieran Agard much to Martin’s annoyance. I can sometimes be a little biased (I am an MK Dons fan… I am from MK!) So, Martin will work to keep it neutral, although his excitement when the Dons score gives away his true feelings. During halftime, we return to the press room for another coffee and a chat about how the game is going and to clarify any points I may have missed or any questions I have – normally it’s asking him to repeat the offside rule which he does, a lot.

Before you know it, the match is over and the fans start to go home. We always are amongst the last to leave as we are cleaning up the equipment and chatting to the remaining journalists about the match.

As we leave the stadium, I am buzzing with adrenaline as I promise myself I will know more about football next time – I never do.

THE LAUNCH OF OUR BRAND NEW STUDIO 2 NEARS...

he last few years have seen numbers T rise in terms of volunteers. This is great as we now have the ability to bring you live entertainment every single day of the week.

However, with just one studio, it created a problem when it came to training our new volunteers. All of our presenters are volunteers, many who work full time, meaning evenings are really the only time they are available. As we host request shows every weekday, the studio is unavailable between 7 pm and 9 pm.

The committee recognised the need for additional space so two years ago, we set out with a mission: to build a second studio.

The first year we focused on the construction side. We moved an exterior wall to give us more space and then built an additional interior wall to create a second studio and a separate reception area. summer’s day came. Carrying chilled A Bollinger and two champagne flutes I trod the Riviera Beach seeking a target.

I’d call myself a gigolo if I knew how to say it but I’ve been through a dull patch. My last pickup saw through my rough-boy-traderdown-on-his-luck act in only three days and threw me out before I could tap her for cash.

So, struggling on my last thousand I decided this time to be the suave, sophisticated financier. Hence the Bolly, the flutes and the swish new show-off rich-young-man outfit, with my tanned and slightly oiled muscles gleaming in the sun.

Plenty of eyes fluttered in my direction from topless beach dollies with no obvious means of support. Financial support that is. Sorry girls. Its money I’m after.

Finally I caught a glance from a good prospect; not quite middle-aged, not quite beautiful, but draped across the sand in an expensive flowered one piece, fingers twinkling with diamonds.

I looked. She smiled. I winked.

‘Do you accept champagne from strangers?’

‘Only the best.’

She patted. I sat. We sipped Bollinger and chatted.

By sunset we were friends; by midnight lovers.

In her luxury villa we slept on silken sheets; dined cordon bleu and talked and talked and talked for a week.

She told me of her late husband’s great wealth.

I told her of my many big deals round the world.

Eyes sparkling, she showed great interest. I’ll soon tighten the line, reel her in and cash will come to Daddy.

One idyllic evening – a fragrant cliff top restaurant; dinner and champagne under the stars – I twitched the line.

‘One of my big projects is giving trouble, darling. I’m piled up at the banks and need short term finance. Can you help?’

‘How much?’

‘Quarter of a million.’

‘A lot of money.’

‘Yes, but your husband left you a fortune.’

‘No. Neither my husband nor his money exist.’

A shocked pause.

‘Don’t exist? What do you mean?

What about the diamonds, the villa?’

In a close and loving partnership we spent four years conning cash from elderly businessmen before retiring from crime and opening an honest business.

Oh my God. What can I do? I’ve fallen in love with the damned woman. She’s hooked me.

I won’t tell you what business but promise it is honest. Well, almost honest.

She brushed my cheek with a kiss and murmured, ‘Trouble is, I fallen in love with you. Please don’t leave.’

portable devices, commercial and hospital radio stations are forever competing for an audience’s attention. Some may question if radio still has any relevance when it comes to keeping us entertained. Well, I say it does, especially Hospital Radio.

89% of the UK population tunes into the radio each week*.

Whether that’s on your commute to work; dancing along to the music in your kitchen or whilst sat in your hospital bed listening for a little bit of light relief, nothing beats listening to live radio.

In fact, the average listener tunes into over 20 hours of live radio each week*!

So, it’s not our radio listening habits that are changing, only the ways we choose to listen, whether it’s FM, digital or online.

Not only do all the Milton Keynes Hospital Radio volunteers and DJ’s love music and radio, but we’re also here because we know we can make a positive difference to your stay in hospital. All our programming is geared around YOU and what YOU want to hear. In some senses we’re lucky, we’ve got a captive audience and we know exactly where they are – in bed, right outside our studio door.

ROCKING OUT TO RAISE MONEY...

n 9th November 2017 hundreds of people O filled the halls of All Saints Church in Bletchley.

For the next two hours, they were entertained by the MK Rock Choir singing some of the most requested songs within the hospital.

Living on a prayer, Don’t stop believing, California Dreamin’ and Hallelujah were huge hits. The audience may not have been singing along (we told them not to so listeners at the hospital got the clearest output) but we know you all were in your beds. In addition to the 100 listeners on the night, we had even more tune in to our repeat the following day, eager to relive the excitement.

We are hoping to host further Rock Choir concerts in the future.

It was such a huge success that, on 27th March 2018, we hosted another concert with the help of the Dunstable Rock Choir - Thursday night host Jeff Drake even sung a song himself.

Although patient entertainment is paramount to us, we are conscious that we need to raise money to keep the studio on the air. We asked our volunteers, and members of the Rock Choir, to bring a prize to raffle off.

We ended up with four full tables of prizes and a separate table for alcoholic prizes.

Everyone won something, including the choir, volunteers and even visitors. Every visitor bought at least one ticket and we raised an outstanding £800, money that is vital for helping us stay on the air.

MK Care and Response Telecare Service is an emergency response unit available to anyone living within the Milton Keynes boundary, operating 24 hours a day and 365 days of the year.

The service incorporates an alarm and enhanced sensors if required – all you have got to do is press your alarm and help will be on its way. Alarm calls are answered by specially trained operators at the Care and Response centre in MK. The operator will take the most appropriate action – perhaps a call to the emergency services, dispatching a mobile warden or calling a family member.

WHAT DO YOU WANT TO HEAR? Our listeners are the most important part! hile our volunteers are important to W MKHR, and their hard work invaluable to keeping the radio on air,YOU (the listener) are our top priority.

It doesn’t matter why you chose it, although we always love to hear the story behind it, only that it makes you happy when you hear it.

Our main goal with each show is to put a smile on your face, whether for the whole hour or just one song.

Our dusty old archives are pretty extensive so don’t worry about if we have it or not – if you request it, we will find it for you.

We create shows with you in mind. We know being a patient in the hospital can be a lonely and scary experience so we aim to make it a little better by playing you your favourite songs.

After visiting the wards, it’s time to get back to the studio and build the show before going on air at 8 pm.

Every weekday evening a group of volunteers, known as the request team, visit the wards to speak to you.

We ask for your favourite song and the reason behind it. This could be the song you danced to at your wedding? Or a song that reminds you of a great night out!

Melanie’s Story “I was fast approaching 50 and my daughter was going to be heading off to university with my son following a year later.

Having been virtually a stay at home mum, ‘chief cook & bottle washer’, I recognised life was about to change. I didn’t want a job that meant a 9-5 Monday to Friday commitment with little flexibility and that is when I read about ‘Home Instead’.

Many prospective employees have a misconstrued idea of what we actually do and wrongly assume that it is a case of clearing up wee, poo etc. In reality, it’s a far cry from that and I believe there are many women in the 50+ group that have the natural skills and time on their hands to help make a difference.

And making a difference is what it is all about.

For an older person, accepting help can be so difficult. But they soon realise that we are not there to take over but simply to help become an extension of them, doing the things they find difficult. My clients and I work together and grow together, I might not always get things right but as we get to know each other I discover their likes and dislikes.

The reassuring thing about working for Home Instead is having the backing of the office staff and the access to training.

I think it would be advantageous for any elderly person to consider help for just an hour a week initially. They can make a list of all the things they struggled with throughout the week and then as their Carer we work together to resolve the problem. That’s what we do to ensure clients stay in their own HOME INSTEAD of having to give up their independence.

As I say to them “Look at all the things you’ve done for others in your life. Isn’t it about time you spoilt yourself”.

SWINGING BACK TO THE 1940’s!

MK Hospital Radio at Bletchley Park... t’s not often that we have to present our Iwhen National Identity Cards to Army Marshalls fundraising but security is tight entering Bletchley Park in 1945.

The war is over and the party is in full swing as we help welcome our troop’s home.

Visitors loved our show so much that many of them actually started dancing – or jiving – in front of our gazebo which gathered quite a crowd. Our volunteers shook their big yellow buckets in a bid to tempt passersby to throw in their change.

In reality, it was a sweltering day in May. The summer heatwave had been going on for so long that it was no longer fun and patients in the hospital were, understandably, hot and fed up at the prospect of another day indoors.

While we are not allowed to take you out of the hospital (nurses frown on us kidnapping patients), we did the next best thing. We brought the party to you via your Hospicom units, mobile phones or tablets.

Over three hours, presenters Tina and SarahJayne took you away from your wards and transported you back in time. Not content with just playing the hits of the 1940s, we found re-enactors and enthusiasts to interview so you wouldn’t miss out on a thing.

A memorable interview was with an RAF pilot in authentic uniform whose wife, a nurse, was putting on a display just up the path.

He was a volunteer, passionate about keeping history alive for children and had spent thousands on authentic war costumes of which he had quite a few. He spoke so animatedly about his cause that, by the end of AJ’s interview, Sarah-Jayne started asking how to join his cause! Luckily our volunteers managed to keep her with the radio station … for now!

How about a day out at the Ridgmont Station Heritage Centre? by the Marston Vale Community Rail Partnership

he Grade II Listed Station House at T Ridgmont is one of the oldest railway buildings in Bedfordshire dating back to 1846

The building has been given a new lease of life

by Bedfordshire Rural Communities Charity & Marston Vale Community Rail Partnership, reopening as a Heritage Centre in 2013 after an extensive 5-year renovation.

The Heritage Centre is staffed by volunteers, who have been instrumental in the success of the building since it opened, and are frequently commented on by our visitors!

but became largely redundant in 1968 after the station became unstaffed. It is the last remaining station building on the Marston Vale Line (Bletchley - Bedford) available for community use.

The Heritage Centre achieved national recognition in 2014, being runner-up in the ‘Most Enhanced Station Buildings’ category in the National Community Rail Awards and the Network Rail Partnership category in the Railway Heritage Awards. It has also held a Trip Advisor Award of Excellence for 5 years.

NOT JUST FOR FUN, HOSPITAL RADIO IS GOOD FOR YOUR HEALTH!

Whether it’s a prolonged stay, or few days, being in hospital often means

calling us. By offering a personalised ‘service’, we are in the beneficial position that we can distract patients from the negative feelings or thoughts they associate with being in hospital.

Other than visiting hours, there is not a lot to do to pass the time. There is a TV available but, honestly, there is only so much daytime telly people can tolerate before becoming bored of that. This has a knock on effect, not only making the time pass slowly but patients also find it hard to sleep as their brains have not been engaged during the day.

Our friendly presenting style makes you feel as if you have a ‘virtual friend’ who empathises with your individual situation and are there to cheer you up 24/7.

Whether it is our volunteers coming around to collect requests and having a chat with you all, inviting you to call in and join the conversation or hosting trivia quizzes which you can answer via Twitter, Facebook or

According to an Impact Study conducted by the Hospital Broadcasting Association, the importance of hospital radio stretches beyond the volunteers and even the listeners.

By visiting wards and asking patients questions regarding their favourite music and memories, we get a conversation going between bays and beds. Patients will talk to each other about shared memories and music choices – whether they agree with their choice or not.
