Welcome from BHBN’s President and Chairman Dear Reader, We are the leading hospital radio broadcaster in the UK, providing music and entertainment around the wards and online for all the Queen Elizabeth, Heartlands, Good Hope, Women’s, Solihull And City hospitals; welcome to the Network’s magazine, which will give you a hint of some of the work that has made us the leading hospital radio broadcaster in the UK. The professional standards and dedication of our presenters and technicians ensure our listeners, in hospital and at home, an enjoyable, high quality and local alternative to the so-called mainstream radio stations. All this and much more was recognised when the Birmingham Society awarded BHBN the 14 th Patricia M. Purchase Certificate. Previous recipients include Birmingham Rep and Birmingham Children’s Hospital. The late and deeply missed Chas Allen plus the very much alive Bob Bartlett received Fellowships of the Birmingham Society largely in recognition of their many, many years’ service to BHBN. The best way to ensure the future success of the Network is to get involved and/or consider a bequest to BHBN in your will; please get in touch with any member of the Board of Directors and see page 29 for details of how to listen around the wards and online, too! Best wishes,

Adrian de Redman President

When I joined the Birmingham Hospital Broadcasting Network over 40 years ago, we had reelto-reel tape recorders – none of the hi-tech equipment like we have today! We’ve had studios in Dale End in Birmingham, Edgbaston cricket ground, City Hospital on Dudley Road and we are currently broadcasting from the Old Queen Elizabeth Hospital here in Edgbaston. In the early days we covered 25 hospitals in and around Birmingham, today the hospitals are fewer but much bigger: but one thing has not changed – the patients always come first. Live programming commences from 4-10pm daily, and on weekends from 7am-10pm. We have a mixture of programmes, including football commentaries from St Andrews and Villa Park during the football season. There’s also classical music, magazine programmes, daily request shows, big band specials – whatever music you like, BHBN can oblige! When you leave hospital, you can still listen to BHBN online, and your smart phone or tablet with the Tune In Radio App, wherever you are, home or away. Please keep listening to BHBN, and enjoy!

TRANSFORMING A RUN DOWN OPERATING THEATRE INTO A STATE OF THE ART RADIO STUDIO SUITE David Horton Technical Controller since 1999 Seven days before Christmas 2011 I received a telephone call from the Estates department of Birmingham’s City Hospital to say that they were to demolish the building where our studio suite had been established for 23 years and we needed to vacate by March. Just what I needed before Christmas!

frame work of the rooms and install ceilings and electrics. It was then ready for ourselves to install the layers of sound proofing decorate and install the studio equipment. Fortunately, City Hospital extended the vacate date to the end of July. On many a weekend between May and July convoys of member’s vehicles were making regular trips from the old studios across to the new premises carrying equipment, furniture, our massive vinyl and CD collection. One weekend we even had a Horse box in the convoy (without the horse of course!) The project was not without its hurdles pitfalls and difficult negotiations but at 9.55pm on Friday 20th July the final words were spoken from our home of 23 years and at 10pm the switch was seamlessly made and a new era had started for BHBN Hospital Radio.

A BHBN Board meeting was called and ideas were put forward. The suggestion that as the new Queen Elizabeth Hospital had been built there was a possibility of premises in the old building. City Hospital had offered alternative accommodation but it was too small for our requirements. Our former Chairman, the late Charles Allen approached the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Land & Property Department who soon contacted him with an offer of a possible suitable site. The site was an unused Operating Theatre on the Fifth floor of the old hospital building now known as the Heritage Building. When Charles and I visited the premises it was dark and dingy, littered with cabinets and unwanted furniture, it was a case of ‘seeing the potential’ of the area we had been offered. I was delegated as Project Manager with the remit to turn the Operating Theatre’s rooms into a state of the art radio studio suite. Once the legalities had been agreed, Risk Assessments and Method Statements had been passed, in May of 2012 contractors were brought in to clear the site and construct the wooden

The Long History Of BHBN Hospital Radio >> The Network was founded in 1952 by Hon. Alderman Mrs Freda Cocks OBE as the Birmingham Hospital Commentaries Association (BHCA). It became the BHBA in 1955 and BHBN in 1972. Its current broadcast name of BHBN HOSPITAL RADIO was adopted in 2006. Nationally, hospital radio first started life in York in 1926.

day, as it is now part of the Heart of England Foundation NHS Trust.

The Network was a pioneer in many aspects of its broadcasting: time spent in hospital back in the Network’s early days was very different to the present, where day case surgery is common. During the 50s & 60s, a two-week stay in hospital was more the average for even a routine procedure. This gave the then stations volunteers the opportunity to foster long-term relationships with patients.

The Network was first formally registered as a Charity in 1962, and was incorporated as a Limited Company in 1981.

The first studio was at the rear of the New Inns Public house on the Moseley Road, providing live football commentaries of local teams to patients in Yardley Green Sanatorium, and as the service successfully expanded, it moved home quite a few times before finally settling at Warwickshire County Cricket Club, in Edgbaston, from 1966. We still serve the Yardley Green Hospital to this

10

It was at Edgbaston that the Network really found its place within the Birmingham hospital community, and where it became a familiar sound around the wards – popular with patients, staff and relatives.

After a long and happy period at Edgbaston, in 1988 Warwickshire County Cricket Club decided to authorise redevelopment at the County Ground. So the Network relocated once more in 1989 to studios based at the City Hospital, on Dudley Road, with an impressive studio complex. This enabled us, in another historic first, to become the first UK hospital radio station to introduce continuous 24 hours a day broadcasting in September 1994. We remain at the forefront of UK and European hospital radio with a number of awards to our credit, including the inaugural Hospital Broadcasting Awards National Winner in 1990. These awards are

judged by a range of radio industry professionals and healthcare staff. A new chapter in the history of the Network got underway in July 2012, when the new BHBN studios opened for business. Bill Waldron became the first presenter to broadcast live from these studios on the site of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham: A state of the art, multimedia broadcasting centre at the site of Birmingham’s first new acute hospital for 70 years. After more than sixty years, the Network continues to broadcast a wide range of programmes that include interviews, local news items, sport, and – of course – the backbone to any hospital radio station’s output, patients’ musical requests. When asked to reflect on the history of the Network, Freda Cocks remarked that what pleased her most is that the enthusiasm with which the Network began has never faded.

acknowledged the quality of our work and presented us with a commemorative 60 year award in 2012 to mark this historic achievement. In September 2015 the Network was awarded The Fourteenth Patricia M. Purchase Award by the Birmingham Society, in recognition of its long standing work in the community, broadcasting to NHS hospitals across Birmingham. It was proudly presented to BHBN during the Society’s 21st Convocation at Birmingham Council House on 21st September 2015. The Network has undoubtedly gone from strength to strength and, although run entirely by volunteers, is still acknowledged as providing as professional service as any radio station in the West Midlands County. During its long history BHBN has developed numerous media and broadcast personalities, including “Voice of the Balls” Alan Dedicoat, local radio presenters Phil Upton, Jennie Wilkes, Tom Ross & Paul Franks, and many other broadcasting professionals!

Catch Shaz on-air on Sunday at 4pm

About Shaz, your BHBN Sunday Radio Presenter

Shaz Hill

How did you find out about BHBN? My friend was a presenter some 30 years ago and I used to help with visiting patients and gathering requests for her programme from the city’s Eye Hospital. At the time we were broadcasting from Edgbaston – I trained as a presenter but never actually got on-air due to my work commitments. Now, semi-retired from my disco days as a mobile DJ, I’m able to give 100% to BHBN.

Every Sunday as I finish my show on air at BHBN, I start thinking about the following week’s programme, its content and how to make it even more interesting and enjoyable than the one I’ve just aired. No two programmes are ever the same as I once again go through the entire collections to bring you, as I frequently say, the best from the rest as I search for new, diverse and even comedy tracks to make the programme a little extra special. Preparing the hour programme generally starts the week before with a few thoughts which are then added to a playlist. With so many songs buzzing around in my head, before I know it, I have penned several play lists which then have to be condensed! The duets are such an interesting genre to research and I’ve learned so much – that information is passed directly to you. Every week guarantees a fresh selection of duos and a first on-air on the Duets from the Decades programme. Every week there is music for everyone as the closely connected individuals harmonise on BHBN, and with a unique mix of nostalgia and surprises! Join in the fun every Sunday, from 5pm.

Best moment at BHBN Presenting my programme and getting the thumbs up from the Programme Controller, Colin, and being given an extra slot – Duets from the Decades. Worst moment at BHBN Crashing in to the news… Weekly BHBN highlights Talking to you when I visit the wards, preparing for your moment to get on-air, and discovering new duets for the programme. The loves in my life My best friend and son; my four-legged secondbest friend; and my music. Hobbies Playing my sax and spending time in my own studio working on compilations for friends. A perfect weekend? Fresh air and countryside with friends, pub lunch, good movie with a glass or two. Three Words summing up how I feel Happy, contented, and relaxed. Future aims To keep trying and doing my best.

Thursday evening show 8-10pm

BHBN Gold, Saturdays 9-11am

“It’s a show of two halves…”

Colin Monnaf

Chris Friday No, it’s not the sports show (covered more than ably by the dedicated BHBN Sport team every Saturday)! On Thursdays, the Evening Show takes on a decidedly two-sided approach – depending on which of the two hours you listen to – hopefully both! Hour 1 is the ‘business’ end – we look at Birthdays Well Known and Obscure, Today’s History File and the catchy-entitled, er, Film News – I look at news and views from the world of film and the box office, plus a heads-up, or more often, fair warning of films (sequels, sequels, and yet more sequels, it seems…) in production. Oh yes, you’ll also love the contributions sent by the enigmatic Listener in Coventry! Hour 2 takes on a different tone; we get deeper into the music. It begins with a Duo of Long Songs, followed by Bob’s Blues, O’Fee’s Opus and Dicker’s Disc – not forgetting Four to the Door. What’s all that about? Tune in on Thursday evenings to find out! But in either hour, the main thing I want to do is play your music. I keep the tunes nice and eclectic, but I love to take your requests and spin the hits you want to hear – after all, you are what we’re here for.

14

As Programme Controller I am responsible in ensuring that our live programming has the staff to present them, making certain there is cover for holidays and illness, sometimes I have to arrange this short notice. I also make sure the high quality of our programmes is maintained and the output is appropriate to our listener demographic. I can confirm that we disprove any adverse perceptions the public may have of Hospital Radio and endeavour to produce and present programmes to a high and professional standard. I present my own two hour programme currently broadcast on a Saturday morning at 9am, BHBN Gold. I have been presenting this programme for over 26 years now, originally broadcast on Sundays at Midday, but moved to the Saturday morning slot in 2010. On BHBN Gold I play the best music from the four decades through the 50s to the 80s – there’s also Hits and Headlines from a particular year, the week’s Top Five Songs from a bygone year and a Classic TV Theme. Even after all these years I still enjoy preparing the show which takes me around four days; it is incredibly rewarding! Now that we broadcast our programmes via the internet we get Social Media messages telling us that Patients returning home continue to listen to mine and others’ shows and become oldie lovers – and I’m sure you’ll be just like them! Programme Controller Colin Monnaf joined BHBN Hospital Radio in 1982, joining the Board of directors in 2003.

Good Vibrations, Monday 5-7pm Donna Joseph I think deep down for many years I always wanted to be a radio presenter but it was vast becoming one of those many things I dream but do nothing about! However I’ve always believed in fate and I think when my cousin Sarah started dating Brian Swann, the then Rock Presenter and new request presenter trainer at BHBN, I believe this was meant to be. I’ll never forget sitting next to Brian at my Uncle’s 70th Birthday and listening with passion about his hobby. Little did I know that this was the start of my journey with BHBN. Although it didn’t happen overnight, I registered my interest on the BHBN website and it was a few months before Colin Monnaf, our Programme Controller got in touch. I remember having to cancel my first interview and Colin made it very clear that they were all volunteers and if I wanted to do this I should remember they are not just hanging around the station and that they all have day jobs. This if I’m honest left me with even more appreciation for all the good work undertaken at BHBN.

Northern Soul lovers to tune in. I also have a feature called Mary’s favorites and this is where I call my dear friend and neighbour Mary Sandall who is 89 years old. Mary and I chat live on air every week before playing 3 of her favourite oldies for that week I absolutely love being on the radio at BHBN and would suggest anyone reading this magazine tunes in at some point during their stay; also why not think about taking us home and listening online – we really do have something special for everyone.

I remember being told the role of being a request presenter and knew in my gut that I’d love it! I started in August 2013 and absolutely relished going on the wards and talking to patients. I enjoyed my Wednesday night Request show for 15 months before being offered my own programme on Monday evenings called Good Vibrations. I play easy listening and feel good soul, mainly 60s 70s and 80s soul. I also play present day if it feels good for the soul, and in the last half hour I play Northern Soul; I didn’t know anything about this before Good Vibrations, but now I’ve been going for nearly two years and love the Northern Soul selection of the programme – I’d love more www.BHBN.net | Call the Studio on: 0121 471 4774 or send them a TEXT: 07519 694 698

Hospital Requests, Tuesdays 7-8pm Nick Whitehouse Age: 36 Occupation: Deputy Head Teacher Tell us about your show! I present the request show on Tuesday evenings. I gather requests from wards at the QE, but anyone can get in touch with a request. What would your 3 desert island discs be? Oh my this is a tough call!!! At the moment I would choose Live and Let Die from Paul McCartney and Wings, Jump by Van Halen and finally Mr Blue Sky from ELO.

Lie in or early morning hike? With a 7 year old, lie ins are the stuff of fantasy. Head says hike, heart says lie in. What’s your burning ambition? To present Top Gear! Which three words sum up how you’re feeling today? Back from holiday :( What’s the best thing about BHBN? Oh being able to speak to such a diverse range of people and hopefully being able to make their day. The first smile off a patient always put a spring in my step!

What’s your weakness? Biscuits and cars. I have owned way too many, cars that is. What’s your best culinary creation? From Jamie Oliver – sausages served on a bed of homemade salsa and lentils. What’s your daily routine? Ok so daily routine. Up about 6.10 and make breakfast in bed. After that get suited and booted and head for work. Once at work, every day is different, that is what I love about my job. When home, I try and get some homework done with my son, then bathing him ready for bed. After that, I may need to get some of my own homework done too. What book are you reading at the moment? With my son I am reading ‘Mr Stink’ by David Walliams. Personally I am dipping in and out of ‘The Naked Trader’, a book about stock market trading.

Hospital Requests, Wednesday 7-8pm James Chew Age: 24 Years Old Occupation: I’m currently living the retail dream as a Store Assistant at Aldi New Oscott! How did you find out about BHBN? After graduating university I began the task of trying to break into the industry by any means possible! After a year of having my own show on Coventry based station Hit1fm, I was again on the hunt for voice work! The search eventually led me to a little page about “Birmingham Hospital Radio” and ultimately BHBN… Tell us about your show! I’m responsible for the Wednesday Evening Request Show! I travel through the wards of Good Hope Hospital, speaking to the patients and the staff, hearing their stories and ultimately finding the perfect song and dedication that suits them! I aim to get as many shout outs as possible and even some enjoyable chit chat to broadcast to your earholes! The best part is giving people something to look forward too, especially when they’re in a position where it’s difficult. If you’d like to hear more, tune in from 7-8pm on Wednesday nights! What’s your weakness? I HAVE NO WEAKNESSES! Or more seriously, sometimes I’m too nice, it just doesn’t work at times, and people can take advantage of that. What’s your best culinary creation? A Slow cooked, red wine beef brisket, with goose fat potatoes and fried asparagus. Food of the gods.

What’s your daily routine? If I’m working, I’ll likely be up at 5:20am to be at work for 6am! I literally roll out of bed, brush my teeth, slide into my clothes and work till 2pm, and then spend the rest of the day attempting to be a human being. If I’m not working I’ll wake up at a fairly decent hour and then spend the day with my girlfriend, playing video games, watching movies or trying to find more voice work! Lie in or early morning hike? If I’m in a particularly magical environment, like Iceland or Scotland, a hike would be pretty nice….. BUUUUUUUUUT who can resist the cool, loving embrace of a duvet. Who are your inspirations? When I was younger I definitely gained an interest in acting and similar activities thanks to Jim Carrey. I spent my childhood watching a lot of his films and I’m still inspired by his career and his amazingly moldable face. More recently, my current inspirations are Nolan North, Troy Baker and Robin Atkin Downes. These guys are some of the most popular voice actors in the world of video gaming and I’m inspired more and more by the performances they give. Your best moment at BHBN? My best moment was more a series of moments, thanks to the fantastic Donna Joseph. She has taken on the great responsibility to train me into something of use at BHBN, and that began with her allowing me to have a small part on her show, Good Vibrations. It was there where I truly learned to use a studio and has led to some great moments on my own show, like being able to broadcast the humming chorus from Puccini’s Madame Butterfly. And finally, your most embarrassing moment at BHBN? The many times I’ve accidentally lowered my chair whilst talking on air. Thanks, dangly Legs.

Hospital Requests, Mondays 7-8pm Miranda Burns Age: (I don’t know about you, but I’m feeling) 22 Occupation: I work part time at the Electric Cinema. It’s the oldest in the country and I can definitely recommend a visit! Partner and children’s names and ages: I am definitely not mature enough to take responsibility for a child, but I have a dog called Pepper if that counts? Tell us about your show: I do a request show every Monday from 7-8pm. That means it’s a show that’s totally for the listeners. I’ll go around the QE for a couple of hours every Monday, collect songs from patients and have a chin-wag with anyone who’ll let me! I’m quite the talker so consequently have to give myself at least an extra hour to get the songs in due to a couple of distractions… Then on top of that, anyone who is listening can request too. Just give us a bell and leave a message and I’ll give it a play! What would your 3 desert island discs be? Proud Mary by Ike and Tina Turner. Defying Gravity - Wicked The Musical, purely for that belt. Something by Dolly Parton, I’m going to go with Here You Come Again.

What’s your best culinary creation? Fry some onion, a lot of garlic, leeks and maybe some bacon in a pan. Add some salt and pepper then whack it all into a bowel of pasta with some cream cheese and Parmesan. Trust me, I lived off it the whole of university – it’s glorious. What’s your daily routine? I don’t really have one. The only thing I can guarantee is that each day will involve the consumption of orange juice, and every Monday will end with BHBN! Lie in or early morning hike? Are you mad? Lie in! Which dream car would you like to hire? I can’t drive (sobs). And I am currently trying to learn with little success. Tune into my show to hear the tragic weekly chronicles of my failure! What’s the best thing about BHBN? Clichéd though it sounds, it’s the people. There are so many wonderful, welcoming, caring and dedicated souls at this station. I feel privileged to have met them. And finally, your best moment at BHBN? Doing the News Cue right by myself for the first time, and then continuing to do so afterwards. (There’s a lot of panic going on behind the microphone on that sound desk that you can’t see haha!).

Meet some of our Listeners >> Listener Phillip A former patient at the Birmingham Hospitals, he now listens regularly to BHBN Hospital Radio from his home My stay in hospital was very boring, until I found BHBN on the Hospital Radio next to my bed. I thought I would tune in and give it a try… I find it great as they play music I enjoy and made the time go that little bit faster! My favourite show is BHBN Gold with Colin Monnaf, and I also enjoy the Elevator Zone with Bubba the Loungehound. BHBN Sport is also handy on Saturday afternoons as it keeps you updated. I tune in around the early evening if I’m not too tired.

Listener Mary I was introduced to BHBN Hospital Radio quite some time ago by Donna Joseph, my neighbour and one of the station’s presenters. I am 89 years old and have not been able to get out of the house for several years. Hospital Radio is now my constant companion on the Internet – I listen every day to something often at 4-5 hours at a stretch. Everyone is a favourite. I would just like to say to all the presenters, and others involved, is thank you all’. They do a wonderful job. Mary, from Great Barr

All in all, I would advise anyone to try it and give them a call, as they are always willing to play your requests!

Listener Katie I listen to BHBN online after being introduced to the show by my Aunt, who contributes to Monday’s Good Vibrations programme. I really enjoy tuning in to the Light Lunch programme too. Well done guys! Katie, from Scotland

Let’s Get Quizzical, Fridays 4-6pm Emma Boydell

What’s your weakness? Being a know-it-all, when I (obviously) don’t know it all, or anywhere near it.

Age: 37 and counting.

What’s your best culinary creation? I can cook a pretty fabulous fish pie, with peas on the side.

Occupation: I work at a big auction house in Birmingham, I specialise in vintage jewelery. And, yes, it is as wonderful as it sounds. I’m very lucky!

What’s your daily routine? Get up, have some tea and muesli, walk to the station and get the train to work… work… go to the gym and flip some tyres… go home… cook dinner. Flop in front of the telly with other half and cat… Sleep… Repeat. (Friday; replace gym with radio)

How did you find out about BHBN? BHBN is something I have been aware of for years. I had some health issues and whilst I was recovering I had some free time in the week and thought I could do some volunteering. I was also keen to get back into radio, after several years of presenting on TV and dabbling in radio news and I dropped Programme Controller, Colin Monnaf an email to see if there was room for me. There wasn’t! However, about six months later I received an email from Colin asking if I was still interested. We met up and had a chat and after some intensive training with ‘Good Vibrations’ presenter Donna Joseph, I started on the Thursday Request Show a couple of months later. Tell us about your show… I’d only been on requests for a couple of months when Colin offered me a full two-hour slot to do my own thing. I gave it lots of thought and decided that any time I’ve been stuck in hospital, I’ve been very bored, so the idea of Let’s Get Quizzical was to get people’s minds working! It’s a simple concept, I play lots of great music and ask a question about every song. That way, if you’re stuck in hospital, you can just relax and enjoy the music, or play along if you’re feeling up to it. You can also challenge your ward mates!

Lie in or early morning hike? I like to mix it up, I do love sleep, but I try not to be a total sloth and I love a physical challenge! Which celebrity inspires you and why? Kim Kardashian – she inspires me to do something worthwhile, because she seems to have got where she is by doing absolutely nothing and I think people should aim to be the antithesis of that! Having said that, I’m sure she’s a nice lady… What’s the best thing about being part of BHBN? Knowing that I help to ease the time of patients stuck in hospital, be that for a day or several months. I’m also very proud to be part of a volunteer organisation that is so well respected and whose members care about it so passionately. Your best moment at BHBN? Being let loose on my first show. Very exciting! And finally, your most embarrassing moment at BHBN? Hmmm… so many… broadcasting for nearly an hour and realising that a technical issue had meant that I’d been talking to myself the whole time. Ooops.

Solihull Hospital Requests Thursdays 7-8pm Rhian Sprague What’s my favourite thing about BHBN? Knowing that I’ve bought a smile on patients faces for playing their favourite track. Before joining BHBN, I’d been a part of student radio which was great and taught me a lot of things but I didn’t really understand what radio meant to a person. I present the requests show on a Thursday evening and those few minutes that I spend with patients on a Wednesday evening make my whole week. I could go into Solihull hospital in a terrible mood and come out beaming, literally. Everything from those little laughs, a smile when you realise I’m coming to speak to you, those chats about your life, where for just one moment there are no worries and you just go back to that happy memory.

Hobbies: Up until this year I’ve never actually had one but I love going to the gym, swimming and being with friends. Of course BHBN is my favourite though! Lifelong ambition: Since I can remember, I always wanted to be a TV presenter – the only thing that has changed is the medium. I’d love to be a radio presenter or work behind the scenes as a producer. My goal for this time next year: That’s a toughie! I’m guessing it’s to be at my dream weight but be healthy with it and also to be looking into moving in to my own home.

Gower Gardens Kent Road, Halesowen Residential Care Home

If it wasn’t for the patients, I don’t think I’d enjoy it as much. I love my Wednesday evenings meeting patients and I only wish I had more time to chat to all of you. No matter where I am in the world or where my career takes me I hope I can always be a part of BHBN. A little bit about me: Nick name: Rhi – as no one can pronounce my name correctly! (It’s Ree-un) All time favourite song: I have to say it’s probably A World Of Our Own – Westlife, so many good memories! Favourite film: The Parent Trap (Lindsay Lohan version)

THE ASIAN MIX - UK HOSPITAL RADIO’S VERY FIRST BRITISH ASIAN SHOW The Asian Mix, Sundays 6-8pm Raveeta Banger When first asked by a colleague of mine to write ‘a bit about myself and my show’ for the magazine, I thought, ok, how do I do this? Talk about my show in an uplifting and exciting way, whilst trying not to sound narcissistic or self-indulged? Then I realised, it is easy; the show really does speak for itself! The Asian Mix is a brilliant blend of music and culture, discussing stories relevant to the British Asian Community from the Birmingham area. I cater to all communities from the South Asian diaspora on The Asian Mix, ensuring the show is providing a true reflection of everything ‘desi’ (meaning from the homeland – the desh), it’s why I called my show The Asian Mix because that’s exactly what it is, a mix of all things British Asian. How did I end up presenting and producing The Asian Mix? Having studied a degree in Film and Media at University and having completed a placement at the BBC, I found myself looking for my next conquest. For ten years, BHBN had been looking to set up an Asian Show – I leapt at the chance to present and produce it! Before I could say BHBN I found myself training up in preparation for The Asian Mix. I’ve never looked back since! What’s the best part about being with BHBN? The fact that I have the creative space to do whatever I want!

What have I learnt after joining BHBN Hospital Radio? The quick answer? So bloomin much! It’s almost coming up to my two-year anniversary with BHBN and the time really has just flown by. My knowledge, skills and experience in broadcast media have grown significantly. Anything can be yours, if you have the courage to try! What does the Asian Mix bring to Hospital Radio? The show brings diversity, a blend of our wonderful British Asian culture through our music and topics to Hospital Radio. The Asian Mix was also the first British Asian radio show in hospital radio in the UK! It has been brilliant putting the show together for my listeners for almost two years now but also something to be truly proud of! Why should you listen to the Asian Mix? Well, why wouldn’t you? I play the best of Bollywood, bhangra, sufi, fusion, old skool, the latest chart hits, qawwali, folk and much more. We really do have an excellent selection of music and topics of discussion on The Asian Mix. How to get in touch if you have dedications, requests or stories to share with us? You can find me on twitter @RadiosRav and on Instagram & Snapchat @RaveetaBanger, alongside the usual numbers. A message to my listeners No one show is the same; I deliver fun, happy and uplifting content to anyone and everyone listening in! As every radio listener knows; it’s amazing what you can see with your ears! So to hear what all the fuss is about, tune in on Sundays from 6pm and have a listen to The Asian Mix – live on BHBN Hospital Radio!

Patients Choice Purpose and Chart >> Philosophy >> The Patients’ Choice Chart is collated from the request received by our Request Presenter, and any that are telephoned into the studio. All the tracks are fed into a database and then sorted to reveal the most requested songs! The current database was started four years ago; previously it ran from the mid 1990’s and forms the basis of the chart we have today. Other than current songs of the time that peak every now and again, the perennial favourite songs or artists will always float to the top… Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, Dolly Parton, and Jim Reeves, to name but a few. We carried out a survey from the most requested songs between 1952 and 2002 for our 50th Anniversary special – the top three was as follows 01. Strangers in the Night - Frank Sinatra 02. It’s Now or Never - Elvis Presley 03. You’ll Never Walk Alone - Gerry and the Pacemakers And they’re still going strong – as they still appear somewhere in our chart today. Below is our current Patients’ Choice Chart at the time of going to print. 01. 02. 03. 04. 05. 06. 07. 08. 09.

Thursday Tea-Time Show,

Bensley Selvan Age: Hmmm, Let me think; I was born in the last millennium, however, to be very precise, I am as old as my tongue but slightly older than my teeth. ☺

What’s your daily routine? Wake Up, Shower, Food, Drive to Work, Food, some more food, Food at lunch time, Snack after lunch, work, More food, Drive back home, Tea and more food, cycling with wife and son and back for a refreshing round of food to replenish the lost calories, bed time snack…snooze ( dreaming about food). What book are you reading at the moment? The Checklist Manifesto.

Occupation: Consultant – Healthcare Technology. How did I hear about BHBN? I stumbled upon BHBN when I moved to Birmingham. Tell us about your show! My show is an eclectic mix of music from the 70s, 80s, 90s and the 00s with a lot of talk and some useless information. Of course my regular features include amazing facts and Top 10 in the Adult Contemporary Pop genre. I have a regular pocket of listeners in Aussie land, India & even the US of A! I also introduce one obscure artist/song in my show every week. That’s the part I love the most. And of course, I play a song every week to the tenacious PPI caller who calls in every week at the same time and then I get a call to change my boiler. Wow. What would your 3 desert island discs be? Sound track from - “O Brother Where Art Thou” Ricky Skaggs – “Love’s gonna get ya” Saigon Kick – “The Lizard” What’s your best culinary creation? Beans on toast!

32

Lie in or early morning hike? Lie In. Your perfect weekend? Siesta on a sandy beach after a fantastic BBQ. Which dream car would you like to hire? Does a Formula 1 car count? Which three words sum up how you’re feeling today? Life is Beautiful. What’s the best thing about BHBN? The ability to play music for people around the world… with a team that is so diverse as its music. Your best moment at BHBN? Every moment is a moment to cherish.

Hospital Requests, alternative Saturdays 1-2pm

ill that they will keep at the top of their mind long after you’ve left the ward. Being a request presenter is poignant and personal.

Anita Shah

That conversation with the patient might be a valuable interaction for them before their relatives visit later in the day. It might even be the only outside contact they have if they have no visitors; I see that all too often.

‘If music be the food of love, play on’. Or so that chap Shakespeare would have us believe. He was right of course. Music really is the food of love, particularly when you’re playing music on air at hospital radio. I’m a director and presenter at the station but my love for BHBN stems from years as a request presenter. I’m one of the folks who lurk on the wards, talking to nursing staff on their rounds and patients at their bedside, asking them which songs they’d like me to play to cheer them up. Love really does feature in those many and varied requests. I’m often asked for the songs that we were played as the first dance at a patient’s wedding. Or a song that just reminds them of their love for their other half. Sometimes I’m asked for a song that their much loved child absolutely adores. I’m even asked to sing the song before playing it. I decline for reasons of health and safety. I do love being a request presenter. A request presenter knows they’re having a direct impact on someone. They know that someone who feels ill is going to be listening at a time when they are at their lowest. It’s going to uplift them. They know that conversation that they had with the patient, took them back in their mind to a happy place. That was a happy place that existed before they were

36

Patients will often request songs for the staff on the ward. I am regularly asked to shout out thanks to the doctors and nursing staff for their unswerving devotion and care. Patients are regularly effusive about the care that they receive whilst in hospital and they like to show their gratitude by utilising hospital radio. I love being a voice for the patients at hospital radio. Our patients also happen to have phenomenal taste in music and their voice allows me to play some really brilliant tunes. I always walk out of the studio at the end of my show buzzing with a renewed energy. As Albert Ayler said ‘music is the healing force of the universe’. And I love playing my part in the healing impact of BHBN.

BHBN Sport, Saturdays 2-6pm >> From live commentary of Premier League games to the first quarter score of the Netball, every moment of passion, controversy and sporting drama is delivered straight to your bedside. Our hardened crew of commentators and pundits have seen it all, from the glory days of London 2012 to the wet and windy scenes at Villa Park; no sport is safe from our insightful analysis and informed opinions. Every Saturday we fit in four hours of sport, sandwiching the twists and turns of live football with everything you need to know about the sporting weeks just gone and coming up. If Birmingham City, Aston Villa or West Brom play at home, we are there, making sure you get the action as it happens, with Saturday afternoon commentaries available to every ward at every hospital; for all midweek games, we’ll make sure that, on BHBN Hospital Radio, you know all the goals.

Remember the dizzying heights of 2011 and 2012 when Birmingham City and Aston Villa made it to Wembley? Oh yes, we were there, and we’ll be there the next time. We are always there too, for action at Edgbaston, with reports and highlights from Birmingham Bears’ T20 campaigns. We pride ourselves on making a programme that’s accessible for all levels of sporting knowledge and relevant for everyone listening; if there’s a sport or team you want light shed upon, the latest transfer gossip or have something you’d like to say, the phone line on 0121 471 4774 and the blue button for Good Hope, Solihull and Heartlands hospitals goes straight to us in the studio, and we always love to know what’s on your mind. Be with us this Saturday for your fix of fixtures!
