Welcome and introduction...

Birmingham Hospital Broadcasting Network now broadcasts over the world on the internet, not like 40 years ago when I joined the network.

Dear Reader,

Thank you for taking the time to read through our NEW magazine, which will give you a little more insight into BHBN Hospital Radio and the work we do for the patients, staff and community in Birmingham and the West Midlands. The Network was founded in 1952 by Hon. Alderman Mrs Freda Cocks OBE as the Birmingham Hospital Commentaries Association (BHCA).

It became the BHBA in 1955 and BHBN in 1972.

It adopted the name of Birmingham’s BHBN in 1992, and adopted its current broadcast name of BHBN Hospital Radio in 2006. Nationally, hospital radio first started life in York in 1926.

The Network was a pioneer in many aspects of its broadcasting. Time spent in hospital back in the Network’s early days was very different to the present where day case surgery is common.

During the fifties and sixties, a two-week stay in hospital was more the average for even a routine procedure. This gave the then Station’s volunteers the opportunity to foster long-term relationships with patients. The first studio was at the rear of the Freda Cocks’ Public house, The New Inns on the Moseley Road, providing live cricket commentaries from Edgbaston to patients in Yardley Green Sanatorium where they were being treated for Tuberculosis which meant that their stay in Hospital for months and longer.

We now have state of the art radio studios broadcasting to Solihull, City, Women’s, Heartlands, Good Hope and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Edgbaston, where the studios are based.

We have a sustaining service 24/7 playing the best music from the last seven decades, and we go on air live daily from 4pm and weekends from 7am through until10pm.

Programmes include daily request shows, magazines, classical music, jazz and big band. We also broadcast live football commentaries from St. Andrews,Villa Park and The Hawthorns during the football season to the Hospitals.

All BHBN staff are volunteers and if you have the misfortune to have to stay in hospital for a short while, we always put you first.

When you go home, you can go online to hear BHBN via our website, www.bhbn.net, also on your smart phone or tablet with the TuneIn Radio App. You can even take us on your holidays or abroad.

Neither, don’t normally lie in unless I wake up to a bad health day. I can’t walk very far so hiking’s out!!

Occupation: Being unable to work due to a medical condition, my true occupation is being an unpaid volunteer for BHBN, its Vice Chairman, Technical Controller, Sports editor... and anything else that’s going.

Partner and children’s names and ages: Wife’s name Lorraine, daren’t give the age!

How did I hear about BHBN? From the now Programme Controller, Colin Monnaf, 36 years ago! We worked next door to each other.

What would your 3 desert island discs be?

Reach Out - Four Tops, Hello Again - Neil Diamond, although a Neil Diamond album could that be one disc??Always - Atlantic Star (Lorraine’s and my wedding song).

What’s your weakness? Chocolate.

What’s your best culinary creation?

There are a few but I guess Chicken Piperade with Pilau Rice.

What’s your daily routine?

Get up have breakfast, wash up, get washed and dressed then there is always something to do for BHBN, download tracks, plan shows, accounts, planning projects or meetings, and continue to improve the website, then maybe a visit to the studio, finally in the evening settling down in front of the TV... I guess in some way sometimes I’m living the dream, running a radio station.

What book are you reading at the moment?

The Broken Window by Jeffery Deaver, also a fan of Lee Childs, Jack Reacher series.

The best place you’ve visited and the place you’d most like to visit?

Best is not necessarily the favourite! Best is Mauritius and I would like to return, but I have to say I love Spain, Barcelona & Seville, and our favourite place at the moment is Santa Ponca in Mallorca.

What’s your burning ambition? Bit old for ambitions I guess, but to win just enough to buy a villa with a view of a cove, in Spain naturally, and to build a radio production studio overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Which celebrity inspires you and why?

I have to say Tony Blackburn, always has been my hero, as is someone who loves his radio and still doing numerous live radio shows a week still, at his age.

Which dream car would you like to hire?

Having once worked moving cars around the country I have driven a fair few but not the very top range, so I would like to try and Aston Martin, but I loved the Audi RS5 Coupe, and even if I won the lottery that would do me fine!

What’s the best thing about BHBN? The people the volunteers the team, and of course my passion, music and a chance to present it.

Your best moment at BHBN? There’s been a few but the two that truly stand out, firstly when I had only just started with BHBN had my first chance to present The Evening Show, then called Nightline, I had twenty-two calls from patients chatting and requesting songs.

The second was 10pm on the evening of the 19th July 2012 when I threw the switch from the broadcast at the City Hospital studios to our new home at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. For me, the culmination of two months of project managing and building a brand-new studio.

Hi. I’m Paul Millington.

I present the Tuesday Evening Show from 8-10pm.

My motto is “more music and less talk” and by the end of my show I hope that listeners have enjoyed the feel good music! I invite those who have listened to tell their friends about the show and the station and more importantly about BHBN. The music I choose is totally random, and so is my chat. The key thing about the songs I play is that you can hear the words and using suitable “apps” you can be in your own karaoke world just like me and my virtual drum kit.

I’ve been involved with local radio for about 30 years and it was by pure chance that I was given the opportunity to be part of BHBN in the year 2000 and I’ve been a presenter ever since in one guise or another.

My mentor, the late great Dave Tysoe – one of the legends of the station – trained me well and I like to believe he would have been proud of where I am now.

National Hospital Broadcasting Association Awards WIN for BHBN Hospital Radio Presenter.

“It was great to be part of the awards ceremony and to have a contingency representing BHBN at the gala event and when my name was announced, I couldn’t quite believe it.”

A volunteer radio presenter for BHBN Hospital Radio in Birmingham has won a prestigious national award after being shortlisted for Best Newcomer.

The Hospital Broadcast Awards are staged annually and rewards hospital radio presenters and stations for the work they do to entertain patients in hospitals across the country.

Emma Boydell, who presents a two-hour show, ‘Let’s Get Quizzical’ on the station took the Silver Award for Best Newcomer, missing out on the top prize to a presenter from Radio Tyneside in Newcastle.

BHBN broadcasts across Solihull, Queen Elizabeth, Good Hope, Women’s, Heartlands and the Birmingham Skin & Neurology Hospitals from studios in a transformed operating theatre in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital Heritage Building.

Emma, who lives in Solihull has been presenting for the station since the end of 2015 and was shortlisted on New Year’s Day this year.

Speaking about her win, Emma said...

Chris Millward aka Bubba the Lounge Hound

To sum up Chris Millward in a few words is almost impossible, but I’ll try!

Chris first joined BHBN in the early 1970s, and it was soon very clear to all those of us involved with the Network at that time, that here was a unique talent! Chris’ knowledge of music was encyclopaedic, as was his music collection, and when he and I did gigs together as DJs, we knew that whatever tunes we were asked to play, we would have them between us (you have to bear in mind that this was before the days of internet etc. where these days all music seems to be available online).

When I became Programme Controller of BHBN back in the ‘1970s’, Chris was my “deputy” and became responsible for training our new presenters. This was ideal for Chris, who was obsessed with radio, and he carried on doing this when he landed his dream job – helping to train new people at the BBC. Chris then left us when he got the job he would do for the rest of his life – he became a Producer at the BBC World Service at Bush House in London. There he could indulge his passions, but luckily for BHBN, his position meant that he was still able to provide us with programmes and content.

His sense of humour was unique. These days he would most certainly be defined as “non-PC”, but there was never any offence or malice; indeed, there were many occasions when, after finishing his shift as a Producer, we would ‘retire’ to the bowels of Bush House, where the BBC Staff bar was located, and there Chris would hold court, attracting people from all nations, who would make a beeline towards Chris to delight in his “words of wisdom”!

He specialised in what’s now known as “lounge” or “cocktail” music, and that’s reflected in the programme you can still hear on BHBN Hospital Radio “The Elevator Zone”, combining his love of “cheesy” music with his extraordinary knowledge, under his radio alias ‘Bubba, the Lounge Hound’.

But it was his love of radio that stood out. He had a vast knowledge of the history of radio (particularly the early Stateside scene), and of the origins of popular TV in both the States and the UK. His record and CD collection was vast and totally unique.

When Chris was diagnosed with the illness that would eventually take his life, he just treated it as an inconvenience, and carried on as normally as he could. Indeed, just a few months before he passed away, I remember being in a pub in Birmingham with him, and with his usual humour (with an added touch of morbidity) he just got on with things, saying he would continue his “farewell tour” (his words!!) for as long as he could.

I also spent many happy years with Chris, performing Shakespeare plays with a local drama group, and I can think of no more apt quote than that of William Shakespeare in his play ‘Hamlet’ – “He was a man, take him for all in all. I shall not look upon his like again” Thankfully for us, Chris managed to record a series of shows and announcements for BHBN which we still use today, courtesy of his wife Debra and his brother Tim. You can tune in to Bubba the Lounge Hound’s “The Elevator Zone” daily on BHBN, and you can also enjoy Chris every day as the voice of BHBN’s Music Selection throughout our daily programming.

It’s still a pleasure for me to hear him each week as I go into the Studios to present my own programmes.

Mary, from Great Barr, listens to BHBN Hospital Radio every day from her bedside at home using the TuneIn App on her tablet, after being introduced to it a few years ago by her neighbour and our Good Vibrations presenter, Donna Joseph.

Mary has been tuning in to BHBN for over 4 years and is well known by the volunteers at the station, she could possibly be the station’s biggest fan!”

Mary listens every day. When asked who her favourite presenter or show was, she said…

“I couldn’t choose, they are all so good” Every Monday on Good Vibrations, with Donna Joseph, hear three of what we like to call ‘Mary’s Favourites’.

Mary has a vast library, in excess of 400 songs, stored up on her own music streaming service on her tablet and each Monday she activates the shuffle option, the three that appear at the top are the songs Mary requests on Donna’s show.

“There’s a few memories you can print in the magazine”, she chuckled. “Being ninety I think I can have a lot of favourite songs.”

When asked how she chooses the songs for her Library she said “ If I hear a song on the radio that I like and not heard for years, I use Shazam to find out the title and artist if I am unsure, then I search for it in Spotify and add it to my Library”.

We suggested to Mary that the songs in her library must evoke many memories for her, “Oh yes” she said. “Memories of the war time days, being a teenager, going to dances in Birmingham and of course many boyfriends!”

Mary has become a valuable asset to us as a ‘behind the scenes’ helper, notifying BHBN if there are any issues in the broadcasts. When Mary first started listening she noticed that on some days, the songs in the Light Lunch programme would be a repeat of the previous days. This helped our technical team to make some changes so listeners are now getting the best possible experience.

Mary said listening to BHBN she feels she has “stacks of friends” that keep her going.

At 90 years of age, Mary is housebound and is the oldest contributor to BHBN Hospital Radio and yet not only uses Shazam and Spotify but finds BHBN on TuneIn Radio!

Auriga sponsors BHBN Hospital Radio For almost a year now, we at BHBN Hospital Radio have wanted to expand our station’s resources by adding an editing suite to our studios.

Priding ourselves in delivering professional broadcasting to our patients and online listeners, it was important for us to have a space where we could continue to create excellent content, radio packages and pre-record interviews when required to ensure the delivery of good quality radio content. It therefore became clear to us that an editing suite was required.

BHBN put a lot of features together for the radio station covering important subject matter relevant to our NHS listeners. BHBN members and Directors David Horton and Donna Joseph had a clear vision and even managed to seek help from a probationary member, Ria, who was also a Graphic Design Student, and kind enough to produce a 3D design for the station. Armed with visual designs, Donna and Technical Director David Horton had all they needed to pitch the idea to any potential sponsors. Being the vivacious lady that she is, Donna was set on securing a sponsorship of £3,000 to fund the construction of the suite and she was determined about making this happen. You see the thing about the ‘doers’ and ‘magic makers’ at BHBN is, when we set our mind to something we make it happen and happen it did!

Mark had a look around the studio and agreed to donate £1,500 to the station which was enough to get the editing suite built.

Whilst this wasn’t the full funding BHBN needed to help realise the vision, it was more than we could wish for and we were both delighted and grateful to Auriga for the contribution. It should come as no surprise to you then that we aptly decided on calling our brand-new editing suite the Auriga Suite. Every name given to anything or anyone carries a story behind it, and this is ours, however the story does not end quite there.

On a separate occasion during the summer, members from Auriga Services came into the studio for a radio interview and with them they brought a surprise. Auriga presented BHBN with a cheque for double the amount, increasing the sponsorship period to two years.

‘We first started speaking to the radio station in October of last year and were impressed with the dedication put in by the staff, all of whom work there on a voluntary basis.Whilst being given a tour of the radio’s studios, which are located at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, we found out that the team were looking to raise money to build a new production suite within the studio.

After a further visit, we explored ways of how we could work together. Auriga decided to sponsor the radio station for the next two years. Our donation will allow the station to go ahead with building the new production suite which they named the Auriga Suite.’

Miller and Carter in Sutton Coldfield, I love a good steak and you really can get the tastiest juiciest steak there. I particularly like the Sutton Coldfield restaurant as it can seem that you’re on a boat if you have a table looking over the boating lake.

So the steak and the lake make this my favourite restaurant.

Have you ever been star struck?

I’m always a bit star struck at the thought of meeting someone, so when I met Leee John from 80s band Imagination last November I was really nervous, however once we sat and got chatting it felt like I’d known him for years!

What’s your favourite 70s tune Tainted Love by Gloria Jones, my regular listeners will know I play this at every opportunity, it just makes me want to get up and dance, now if a song can make you feel that energetic and good it’s got to be good right?

What was the last thing you listened to on the radio and why do you listen?

It has to be our very own Shaz on Sunday, her Duets and the Decades show at 4pm is so easy listening. I’m always amazed at how she seems to find new material every week, she’s a great presenter and it ties in nicely to when I’m preparing my dinner on a Sunday evening.

When did you last laugh out loud?

I’m also a children’s entertainer and the last party had a beast mascot from the film, Beauty and the Beast.Well I have to say this beast was the funkiest mascot dancer I’ve ever seen, all the children and I thought he was hilarious and he had us all in stitches laughing.

If you could be any animal in the world, what would you be and why?

I would be a Cat, and I’d be a fluffy cat so I get lots of fuss. I just love how cats roam around doing whatever they want, sleeping, eating and stretching, and being fussed and tickled, this to me seems like a puuurfect life!

Behind the Mic Sam Johnston QE Hospital Requests I joined the BHBN family late last year, and what a fun time it’s been!

I was so excited to get out to the wards to meet all the lovely patients and get on the radio when I started, and after some invaluable training I was ready to be unleashed on air!

Every Monday I will go around the Queen Elizabeth and The Birmingham Women’s Hospital.

In my time, I have met some characters, at first it was really daunting but it’s always so rewarding to know you’ve brightened someone’s day and the patient’s always leave a smile on my face.

I have to allow myself a good few hours, I’ve been known to stay chatting at the same bed for quite some time!!!

Not only that but the patients have great music taste, so I’m always rediscovering music I love.

Another thing I’ve learnt is how amazing the QE nurses are, always enthusiastic and happy no matter how busy they are.

The thought of talking into a microphone in an empty room was pretty strange at first but I love it more and more, my hour on air on a Monday night goes by in a flash so I’m always covering other shifts when another presenter is away on holiday just to chat some more!

I’ve even attended some fundraisers including the Great Midlands Fun Run with the rest of the BHBN gang meeting a bunch of inspirational people… and some cute dogs.

My experience at BHBN so far has been an absolute dream, maybe excluding the time Dave Horton had to run into the studio to turn the microphone off when I messed up and burst into awkward laughter...

How did I hear about BHBN? My dad recommended getting in contact with BHBN after I graduated University and now, here I am!

Tell us about your show. Well I’ve been hosting the Wednesday evening Request Show for the past year and a bit.This has me visiting Good Hope Hospital and speaking to all the lovely patients and then playing their favourite songs, and dedications.

My other show is The Rock Years, which is a 2 hour slot of various genres of rock, from the early days of man, to the future. You may enjoy it, you may not, but either way you’ll likely hear something you have never heard before. It might get dangerous, but I will be your guide.

James ;) What book are you reading at the moment?

I’m currently reading Uzumaki by Junji Ito. It’s a terrifying cosmic horror story, about a town thatgets contaminated by spirals. It doesn’t sound that scary, but it contains some real “twisted” images. Enjoy!

In the previous magazine I said that I couldn’t escape the lure of the bedsheet, well guess what?

The best place you’ve visited and the place you’d most like to visit?

The best place I have visited (so far) is Reykjavik in Iceland. The whole country is otherworldly and fascinating, considering it’s only 2 hours away. I’ve always wanted to visit Japan and spend some time seeing the various sights, same goes for the USA. What’s your burning ambition?

My ultimate ambition is to become a successful Voice Actor. I’m working on getting myself more and more work in the field, and hope to one day do something that the masses can hear and enjoy..

What’s the best thing about BHBN? There constant efforts to provide more, and better content to reach out to patients with.

Your best moment at BHBN? As of recently it was the Great Midlands Fun Run 2017. I had the chance to briefly commentate on the Big City bus at town gate, and giving the exhausted runners one last boost was fantastic!

I was working at The Women’s as a nurse at the time, and have since retired.

My name is Kelly Howell. On my Easy Listening on a Tuesday Evening programme, I hope my choice of music can help brighten up patients around the wards.

I started at BHBN in 1997 after a BHBN presenter visited the wards at The Women’s Hospital to collect requests and suggested I apply to be a volunteer.

Once accepted at BHBN I presented a request show for the Women’s Hospital until 2012.

In addition to being a volunteer at the station I am a volunteer with Silver Line. My other activities are gardening, musical theatre and Zumba.

My worse moment at BHBN is when I called Jose Carreras, “Jose Carrackers” during a back credited request. Slip of the toungue!

There are plenty of surprises in store as I sift through six decades of sales data – which act has the best-selling album? It’s not the Beatles!

What book are you reading at the moment? Oscar Wilde – A Picture of Dorian Gray. I have, however, been reading this book for about a year now (it’s VERY short). It keeps putting me to sleep.

Lie in, PLEASE. The best place you’ve visited and the place you’d most like to visit? I love love love San Francisco, and I’d really like to see Japan or Macchu Picchu.

Radio is company – particularly on your first night in hospital, in unfamiliar surroundings on a ward with people you’ve only just met – or if you’re in a side room on your own.

Our Newest Member Catherine MacLennan

Catherine is one of our newest members, who came to BHBN with a poignant story about the loss of her own unborn babies, the journey she has been on and how she is raising awareness and helping other women and their partners who have had similar experiences. Catherine gave an incredibly open and insightful interview to Donna Joseph in April 2017 where she spoke about the events in her life and how they have made her who she is today. During October 2017 along with other Baby Loss Organisations, The pinksnblues supported the Baby Loss Awareness Month, anyone who had experienced Baby Loss and others were invited to join the International Wave of Light by lighting a candle for an hour in memory of all their forever babies. Having started in October 2015, its followers have grown on social media to more than 30,000, and this can be attributed to the success of the overall message of the online campaign.

In a conscious decision made at the branding stages of the campaign, activist Raj tells me how she opted for ‘pink ladoo’ for girls to deliberately oppose the traditional golden yellow ladoo for boys. The Asian Mix: The Pink Ladoo Project continued...

Some suggest an irrelevance of the Pink Ladoo campaign in a progressive 21st century Britain: that which is deemed progressive in a western culture is incomparable to that of eastern culture.

Raj responds to her critics by placing emphasis on the relevance her campaigns message has in a modern society.

‘My countenance to that is always, OK, are you stating that we are the beacon of equality and feminism for all other cultures across the globe?

And undoubtedly the answer is no, so therefore my campaign has a space to exist, whether that is within the majority of the community or whether that’s within one household, that’s enough for me.’

Behind the Mic Bill & Jo After a fun and rewarding eight years at the helm of the Friday Evening Show in March 2017 we decided that we had reached the point where we fancied a change and an early night!

The 5-7pm slot on Thursdays had recently been vacated and so, with the thumbs up from Programme Controller Colin Monnaf, we set about cooking up a new kind of show.

We realised we’d soon have to cater to the tastes of an audience looking forward to their evening meal rather than settling down for the night; so once we realised that there was plenty of creative scope around the subject of one’s supper that was the theme we followed with relish.

So, over two hours each week with some tasty features, seasoned with a sprinkling of Bloomin’ good music, we serve up three courses for your entertainment.

For starters, we’ll kick off with something upbeat and memorable, a hors d’oeuvre if you will, before we give you a grilling with our 6 of the best culinary quiz - just for fun - but highly addictive, certainly for request presenter Geoff, at least.

We’ll also bring to your table a song linked to starter foods. Moving on to the main course, there will be a song all about the savoury items along with a drink inspired number and as we’re sonorous we’ll then dole out the extra portion a track longer than five minutes – certainly not half-baked!

This enables us all to have a nice cup of tea (and if Producer Jo has been baking – a nice slice of cake).

Next feature up is ‘Debuts and Departures’ – we pick an artist from the last 60 years or so and you get to sample some of their work – their first and last UK top 20 hits – which often throws up some treats and, er, surprises!

Finally we’ll be helping your digestion along with music of a more mellow flavour. Indeed, as it’s the third course, there will be a sweet ditty, but we also provide the ‘Mood Music’, which could be a classical piece, TV theme or maybe an ambient instrumental track – anything that invokes a certain atmosphere.

Then we have the ‘After Dinner Speech’, a morsel written by someone with a story or message to give you food for thought.

By this point of the show we hope you will be feeling much better and ready to tuck into the Thursday Request Show.

Catch Pete Bayliss LIVE on air Tuesdays at 4pm and Saturdays at 8pm

Behind the Mic Pete Baylis I was asked if I would like to say a few words about myself as “one of the relatively new” members. I joined BHBN about 40 years ago, so why would I be a new member?

Well, after a few years as Programme Controller for the Network in the dim distant past, I left to pursue other interests. I spent many years as resident DJ/announcer at Villa Park; I had more than a dozen years as a freelance film reviewer on local radio, and I did disco work for more than 25 years, so I reckoned it was about time I put my feet up.

Then, a couple of years ago, I was at a few social functions and met up again with the current bosses (Colin and Dave) who all those years ago had been in my “intakes” of trainees! They found out I had just decided to retire, and asked if I was interested in returning to BHBN. I confess that at the time I wasn’t.

It had been a long time since I’d done any radio work, I am currently busily involved with several amateur dramatics societies, and I also wanted to have time to explore some of the places in the UK that I hadn’t been to, but I went along one Saturday morning just to look at the set-up in the current studios, and made the mistake of sitting behind a control desk and “having a play”.

I was hooked again. So, I re-joined BHBN and was then offered a regular programme, which now – more than a year later – I’m still enjoying.

I had forgotten the pleasure a local, individually tailored radio station can bring to people who are largely confined to a small area without the ability to get out and about, but the comments I get are always positive and have convinced me that I did the right thing coming back.

It’s also reignited my passion for music, and I’m glad to be able to share that with our listeners. I currently have two regular programmes: ‘Playing It Cool’ every Tuesday from 4-6pm, which covers eight decades of jazz, swing, blues and Latin Music; and ‘The Soul Train’ every Saturday from 8-9pm, bringing an hour of soul, Motown, funk and dance music from the 1960s, 70s, and 80s. As well as some classic tracks from each genre. I also try and play some lesserknown music, which I think brings a freshness to the proceedings. From what I hear from feeback, that seems to work!

The music for both programmes is culled from my own (rather extensive) CD collection, and it’s a great pleasure to share my favourites with our audience each week, even though most of my colleagues think I’m mad to bring a big bag full of CDs to the studio every week, when these days everything is readily available online!

I also “sit in” for some of the other presenters when they can’t be around, and that also gives me the chance to play all other kinds of music in a programme I call “The Music Box”. That covers just about every genre of music you can think of, and is also great fun to do!

So, there you have it. Just a few words about one of the “new boys” – 40 years after I first joined BHBN. Long may it continue!

Behind the Mic Graham Allen I first applied for BHBN in 1994 when I was on Coronary Care at City Hospital, the nursing staff very kindly got in contact with BHBN and I was visited by the then Recruitment Director, following which I was invited to attend an open evening.

I was with BHBN from 1994 until 1997, I was trained by David Elliott in a group of about eight other prospective members. My first show was a Request Show on a Saturday from 12-1pm, and assisted on Sport for a few weeks on Saturday Afternoons, and then took on The Network Choice (now The Evening Show) on Saturday evenings 9 -11pm while still doing The Requests Show, however I felt it was too much work and I should make room for others on the Network, so I stepped down from the requests during 1995, From time to time due to work commitments etc. Colin Monnaf, now Programme Controller and still presenting BHBN Gold, used to ask me to sit in for him on BHBN Gold then on Sundays 12-2pm, I loved the opportunity as it is my kind of music.

During 1995 I was given the opportunity by the, then Programme Controller to create a Brand New Show, and given complete creative control over the show as well, it was a Breakfast Show on Saturday Mornings 6-10am.

In early 2015 I was back in Radio in The Black Country, this time Community Radio, by May 2015 I was in discussion with Colin Monnaf (Programme Controller) about the possibility of returning to BHBN for the first time in in 18 years.

I was offered Sundays and we settled upon the name of ‘The Sunday Bash’ and also agreed that once again I could have complete creative control and so it was that on 14th June 2015 ‘The Sunday Bash’ began, with my wife Christina as CoProducer and Co-Presenter.

It has underone several changes (my choice) during the last year but now we have settled on something that works, and is gaining in popularity all the time judging by the feedback on social media.

‘The Sunday Bash’ is now sponsored by Psychotron Records.

Catch Roger Cunningham LIVE on air Sunday Evenings at 10pm The Birmingham Hospital Broadcasting Association (BHBA) was formed in 1952 in order to broadcast football and cricket matches to long stay hospital patients. The success of those broadcasts led to an expansion of the service and by 1959 an agreement was reached with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) to broadcast concerts from the Town Hall. Those broadcasts, now from Symphony Hall, continue to this day.

A large microphone was slung across the Town Hall auditorium clipped onto a safety rope and yes (!) one evening the clip failed and the mic swung giddily but safely above the audience.

Our presenter sat in a small box underneath the stage. There was a window but all you could see were the feet of the first violins – great training for timing the delivery of an introduction before the music started.

Eventually the commentary position was moved to the back of the circle where you could see everything. When Symphony Hall was opened in 1992 BHBN moved into one of the commentary boxes at the rear of the stalls. Audience members can get a good look at us as they enter or leave the Hall.

At first the network used to broadcast every concert which was not always appreciated by some of our pop music loving members.

A performance of Verdi's Requiem caused mutterings until a patient rang in to thank us. The renowned American violinist, Pinkas Zuckerman, once gave an encore which he dedicated to patients in Birmingham's hospitals.

Nowadays, we tend to broadcast the Orchestra's Friday night series and special concerts such as Christmas. It's more likely to be Star Wars than Shostakovich.

Over the years many world class soloists and conductors have given us interviews which we used in intervals and music magazine programmes.

We even published two books of 'Concert Conversations' to raise funds for BHBN. Since we first broadscast the CBSO it has grown from a good provincial band into one of the world's finest orchestras. We are proud our or association with them and with Symphony Hall that allows us to bring great music to patients in the city's hospitals.

Trust me, there is life after Brain Surgery

Even with the strongest & fittest and those that have led excitable & demanding careers, such episodes do leave a scar regardless. We eventually have to accept what we have been left with and live with the limitations imposed through no fault of our own.

In 2004, Anthony Fisher suffered a subarachnoid haemorrhage - an uncommon type of stroke caused by bleeding on the surface of the brain.

It is a very serious condition, which can be fatal.

Anthony was a serving police officer, on duty at the time when he blacked out at the wheel of a police van. The after-effects eventually forced his retirement from the police in 2010 after two major operations and, since then, Anthony has dedicated a lot of time to helping other people and their families come through similar circumstances.

The difference between the possible & impossible is merely a measure of one’s determination.

Anthony recently wrote to the Trust to express his gratitude to the team in the outpatient brain injury rehabilitation service – better known as Moor Green – at Moseley Hall Hospital and the QE Hospital Edgbaston to encourage them to use his testimony to give others inspiration. With his permission, here is an edited version of his account.

THERE IS LIFE AFTER A BRAIN INJURY There is many a moment when words cannot describe the pain, the sensations and emotional state that can often leave a mind & body weak and lacking in confidence & self-belief when now having to face the obstacles of normal day to day life. These are but a few things of the after affects which unfortunately in some cases does include epilepsy as a welcoming gift.

Paths from now on must be walked instead of ran when reaching goals we set out to achieve.

Great care should be taken when doing so. Rest and deep core relaxation are the key factors in listening to what your body is telling you.

“My mother use to tell me that I should take it slow. The pace is not what matters it’s the direction that you go. Keep your feet upon the path & eyes upon the goal. You will achieve all the joy a heart could ever hold.”

Believe me this can be frustrating & at times upsetting as it cannot always be understood not only by yourself, but by those around you or others that don’t realize that despite a perfect HD picture that presents itself in front of them, there is the one on the other channel that paints a difference scene.

Days are never the same. Don’t be afraid to say NO when thinking ahead but give consideration to what can’t be climbed may be walked around instead.

This has taught me that no two persons react alike and that nobody comes through the experience unchanged.

But thanks to some immediate wonderful medical care/supervision thereafter plus a strong family & friends I came through the golden hour.

Behind the Mic Phillip Stoneman BHBN Sport & Living Up the Weekend I’m usually around on Saturdays from 2pm– either looking after the BHBN Sport programme, or during summer and international breaks, dropping some dirty beats (read: light pop and the occasional bit of cheese for a few hours).

Whether it’s the plight of Aston Villa, the time I asked my dentist about the time it takes to floss and he said “how long is a piece of string?” or the latest follicular phenomenon, et capillus planae*, there’s always a story to share, and we’re so grateful that you’re there for the ride!

It’s always a privilege going to the grounds to commentate – even since relegation, I can confirm that the media catering budget remains intact at Villa Park (which makes up for the quality of football), whilst at The Hawthorns the pies are wonderous!

That said, you’re only given flimsy plastic forks to eat said pies, and on more than one occasion I’ve made a right mess of things!

When we get the chance to provide updates from our cricket commentary cupboard at Edgbaston, the view is incredible, and the complementary media crystal jar of biscuits is a joy.
