The fitness industry in the United States has experienced significant growth in recent years, with people becoming more aware of the importance of leading a healthy and active lifestyle. As a result, fitness franchises have become increasingly popular among entrepreneurs looking to enter the market. In this article, we will discuss the top fitness trends in franchising in the USA.

HIGH-INTENSITY INTERVAL TRAINING (HIIT) FRANCHISES

HIIT is a type of workout that involves short bursts of intense activity, followed by periods of rest or recovery. This type of training has become extremely popular in recent years, as it is known to burn calories and improve fitness levels quickly. HIIT franchises like Orangetheory Fitness, F45 Training, and 9Round have become increasingly popular in the USA, with their unique workouts and group classes.

BOUTIQUE FITNESS STUDIOS

Boutique fitness studios are small, specialized fitness centers that offer a variety of workouts, often with a specific focus. These studios have become popular among consumers who want to try new types of workouts, such as Pilates, yoga, and cycling. XPONENTIAL Fitness, a previous cover

WEARABLE FITNESS TECHNOLOGY

Wearable fitness technology, such as fitness trackers and smartwatches, has become increasingly popular in recent years. These devices can track activity levels, heart rate, and even sleep patterns, making it easier for people to monitor their fitness goals. Fitness franchises like Orangetheory Fitness have also incorporated wearable technology into their workouts, making it easier for members to track their progress.

PERSONAL TRAINING FRANCHISES

Personal training franchises have become popular among consumers who want a more personalized approach to fitness. These franchises offer one-on-one training sessions, customized workout plans, and nutritional guidance to help individuals reach their fitness goals. Popular personal training franchises include Anytime Fitness and Snap Fitness.

VIRTUAL FITNESS FRANCHISES

Virtual fitness franchises have become increasingly popular in the USA, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic. These franchises offer online workouts, live-streamed classes, and virtual coaching to help individuals stay active from the comfort of their own homes. Popular virtual fitness franchises include Peloton and Beachbody.

The franchise fitness industry in the USA is experiencing significant growth, with new and innovative fitness franchises emerging every year. Whether it's through high-intensity workouts, boutique fitness studios, wearable technology, personal training, or virtual fitness, there is no shortage of options for individuals looking to improve their fitness levels. If you are an entrepreneur looking to enter the fitness franchising market, it's important to keep up with the latest trends and offerings to ensure you are aligning the needs of your market with the offerings that the population craves.

Better Health Means Better Business

Physical Fitness Offers Entrepreneurs A Path To Success

Too few Americans are taking care of their health the way they should. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), less than 50% of Americans over 18 met the country’s Physical Activity Guidelines for aerobic physical activity, and less than 25% met the same guidelines for aerobic and musclestrengthening exercise.

Not only does lack of exercise contribute to the rising rates of obesity in the U.S., but it also impacts lifespan. The CDC found that between 1999 and 2020, the percentage of Americans who are obese increased from 30.5% to 41.9%. Meanwhile, another study conducted by the agency found that 10% of deaths for U.S. residents between 40 to 70 years old can be attributed to lack of exercise.

There’s no doubt that the nation needs to get in shape. Offering options to get people moving presents a great business opportunity for interested entrepreneurs. While the CDC recommends 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week and two days of muscle-strengthening

training, any amount of exercise can provide physical, mental and emotional benefits. Interested in helping Americans get fit and being your own boss? Then a fitness-based franchise might be for you.

BENEFITS OF REGULAR EXERCISE

When it comes to the good that comes from frequent daily physical activity, the benefits of regular workouts are many. Obviously, exercise can help a person manage

their weight, but it also provides many other benefits.

For instance, a workout routine can impact multiple areas of health, from lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke to reducing the chances someone will develop diabetes. Physical activity has also been linked to a decreased chance of getting certain cancers.

Movement, particularly muscle-strengthening exercises, has been linked to improved mobility and

healthier bones and muscles. Both stronger bones and better mobility or physical function play a role in preventing falls, which can have a life-changing effect on older adults especially.

Finally, exercise offers many benefits in terms of mental and emotional well-being. For instance, it helps promote sleep and reduces feelings of anxiety. Regular physical activity can improve a person’s cognitive ability and reduce their risk of dementia later in life.

WebMD suggests that improving cardiovascular endurance requires exercising aerobically 30 minutes per day, three to seven days per week.

THE RIGHT SEASON

Every time of year is good to start to focus on exercise, but the spring is particularly ideal as people begin to think ahead to summer vacations and time spent by the water. This is where the business opportunity comes into play.

Most exercise-based franchise systems don’t require franchisees to have previous experience in the fitness industry. Whether traditional gyms or fitness centers offering specialized classes like pilates or boot camps, exercisefocused franchises can be a great way to realize your dream of owning your own business. This type of franchise is excellent, too because it gives

you a feeling of meaningfully contributing to the betterment of your local community.

Statista reported that the total revenue from health and fitness businesses is expected to show an annual growth rate of more than 6.5% by 2027. While the pandemic did affect the fitness industry, it has proven resilient and people’s interest in maintaining or improving their health has grown. According to the International Franchise Association (IFA), flexibility is one of the keys to success for entrepreneurs interested in a fitness franchise. Offering adaptable workouts was one way that many gyms were able to weather the pandemic’s effects on their businesses.

WORKOUTS FROM ANYWHERE

Like everything else, the pandemic changed how we exercise. Some people exercised less during the early months of the pandemic, while other groups exercised more—typically those who regularly worked out before the lockdowns. COVID-19 also changed where we exercised, as more people looked for activities to do in their homes or on their own outdoors.

Franchise brands such as XPONENTIAL provide options to those individuals looking for a new way to get fit.

XPONENTIAL offers the power of choice to help people stay motivated to keep moving. People can explore new

workouts through the xpass, which includes access to nine very different workouts.

XPONENTIAL is known for bringing the best studio fitness brands to people’s living rooms via daily live classes. Thanks to their global community streaming alongside, no one ever has to train alone. Best of all, XPONENTIAL’s workouts are led by expert fitness instructors. People get to train with real experts, not influencers.

If you think a fitness franchise might be the right next step in your career, consider these questions:

• Is there a particular fitness franchise you are passionate about?

• How is this fitness opportunity different from others in your area?

• What do other franchisees say about the business? What do customers say?

• What training and support is offered to franchisees?

• What is your budget? Doing the proper due diligence before investing in any franchise is essential. If you think a franchise is the best way to meet your goals and dreams, why not take the next step? Xponential Fitness is the largest global franchisor of boutique fitness brands. The company operates a diversified platform of ten brands spanning across verticals including Pilates, barre, cycling, running, rowing, dancing, stretching, boxing, yoga, and functional training.

Anthony Geisler is the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Xponential Fitness.

He is a fitness franchising veteran with over 20 years buying and building household names. After successfully growing LA Boxing into the largest boxing, kickboxing and MMA fitness franchise in the U.S., he then sold it to UFC Gyms and saw there was more opportunity in specialized workouts in a boutique, premium setting. Geisler bought Club Pilates in early 2015, a small collection of boutique Reformer Pilates studios concentrated in California that is now the largest Pilates brand worldwide.

In 2017, Anthony recognized there was further opportunity with scheduled boutique fitness and ormed Xponential Fitness to acquire and build the best brands across every major modality in boutique fitness. He formed a founding Xponential team and recruited the industry’s experts for each brand’s growth.

Xponential’s leadership team has decades of experience in fitness and wellness franchising. We have the network, resources, platform, and playbook in place to ensure continued growth and expert support every step of the way.

The Future of Health and Wellness Franchising

The future of health and wellness franchising is looking bright, as people are becoming more health-conscious and interested in living a healthier lifestyle. With an increasing demand for health and wellness products and services, franchising in this industry is poised for growth and expansion.

Some of the trends that are shaping the future of health and wellness franchising include:

1. Personalization: Consumers are increasingly seeking personalized health and wellness solutions that are tailored to their individual needs. Franchises that offer personalized programs and services, such as nutrition and fitness plans, are likely to be more successful.

2. Technology: Advances in technology are enabling health and wellness franchises to offer more advanced and innovative products and services. For

example, wearable technology and mobile apps are being used to track fitness and nutrition data, and virtual reality is being used to enhance the exercise experience.

3. Sustainability: Environmental sustainability is becoming a key concern for consumers, and health and wellness franchises that incorporate sustainable practices into their operations are likely to be more successful. This includes sourcing environmentally-friendly products and reducing waste.

4. Mental health: Mental health is an increasingly important aspect of overall health and wellness, and franchises that offer mental health services such as therapy and mindfulness programs are likely to be in high demand. Finally, one of the key factors that will shape the future of health and wellness franchises is franchise support. Franchisees require support from their franchisors to be successful, and the quality of this support can make or break a franchise.

In the future, health and wellness franchises that provide comprehensive support to their franchisees are likely to be more

The Economy of a Fitness Franchise

Fitness franchises have become increasingly popular in recent years, and it's no surprise why. With a growing focus on health and wellness, more people are looking to get fit and improve their overall wellbeing. However, opening a fitness franchise can be a significant investment, and it's essential to consider the economic factors involved. At the core of any successful fitness franchise is a solid business model. The model should be based on sound

financial principles and be designed to generate revenue while maintaining profitability. This requires careful consideration of factors such as location, marketing, pricing, and staffing.

One of the most critical economic factors to consider when opening a fitness franchise is location. A franchise's success can often depend on its location, as it determines the pool of potential customers. A franchise in a high-traffic area with easy access and visibility

will likely perform better than one tucked away in a corner. It's essential to consider factors such as local demographics, competition, and market saturation when choosing a location.

Marketing is another crucial factor in the success of a fitness franchise. A robust marketing strategy can help drive traffic to the business and generate new leads. Digital marketing is particularly effective in today's increasingly online world, as it allows for targeted advertising and realtime analytics. An effective marketing campaign should include a mix of online and offline tactics, such as social media advertising, email marketing, and community outreach.

Pricing is another economic factor that can significantly impact a fitness franchise's success. Pricing models can vary significantly, from flat-rate memberships to pay-per-class or personal training sessions. The model chosen should be reflective of the target audience and the competition in the area. It's essential to strike a balance between affordability and profitability.

Staffing is another critical consideration when opening a fitness franchise. The

right staff can make all the difference in the customer experience and retention rates. Franchise owners should aim to hire qualified, enthusiastic professionals who are knowledgeable and passionate about fitness. Training and development programs can help staff grow their skills and build a stronger team.

In conclusion, the economy of a fitness franchise is a complex web of factors that requires careful consideration and planning. Location, marketing, pricing, and staffing are just a few of the critical factors that can impact a franchise's success. By building a solid business model that addresses these factors, franchise owners can position themselves for longterm success and profitability.

The Importance of Health & Fitness for Kids

As a parent, ensuring your child’s health and well-being is essential. One crucial aspect of a child’s overall health is their fitness. Children's fitness is more than just exercising. It involves a combination of activities that improve their physical, mental, and emotional well-being.

Physical activity is critical for children's development as it improves their strength, balance, and coordination.

Moreover, it helps to reduce the risk of obesity and other chronic diseases, such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Encouraging children to participate in physical activities from an early age sets them up for a healthier lifestyle as they grow up. Here are some tips on how to promote children's fitness:

MAKE IT FUN

Children are naturally active and love to play. You can use

this to your advantage by incorporating physical activities into their playtime. For example, instead of playing video games, encourage them to play outside with their friends, go on nature walks, or ride bikes. By making fitness fun, children are more likely to participate willingly.

SET A GOOD EXAMPLE

Children tend to mimic what their parents do. Therefore, if you want your child to be active, you must set a good example by being active yourself. You can involve your child in your fitness routines such as jogging or taking walks together.

ENCOURAGE A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES

Variety is crucial when it comes to fitness. Encourage your child to try different activities such as swimming, dancing, or martial arts. This not only keeps them interested but also ensures that they work different muscle groups.

LIMIT SCREEN TIME

Excessive screen time is one of the leading causes of childhood obesity. It is essential to limit the amount of time

your child spends in front of a screen and encourage them to participate in physical activities instead. My parents are always nagging me and my brother to get off our phones and if our family is anything like yours that’s probably happening at your house as well! Here’s a secret - all the kids know that we shouldn’t be on the phone as much as we are…

MAKE IT A ROUTINE

Routine is critical when it comes to children's fitness. Set aside time each day for physical activity, whether it's a family walk after dinner or playing at the park. Consistency is key to making physical activity a habit.

In conclusion, children's fitness is crucial for their overall health and well-being. By incorporating physical activities into their daily routine and making it fun, you can set your child on a path towards a healthier lifestyle. Remember to set a good example, encourage a variety of activities, limit screen time, and make physical activity a routine. With these tips, you can help your child stay healthy and active for years to come.

Franchising has embraced children’s fitness in a meaningful way with many excellent options for entrepreneurs.

Here are some examples of popular children's fitness franchises that cater to kids of all ages. Our family has used many of these over the years and I have fond memories of some of these (like The Little Gym!)

THE LITTLE GYM

The Little Gym is a children's fitness franchise that offers classes for children aged 4 months to 12 years old. The classes are designed to help children develop their physical, social, and cognitive skills through gymnastics, dance, and sports.

KIDOKINETICS

Kidokinetics has engaged children with our fun, highenergy sports and fitness classes since 1996, introducing physical education to boys and girls of all ages. We are a premier sports, fitness, health, and recreation program provider that comes to your preschool, elementary school, local park, or community center.

SOCCER SHOTS

Soccer Shots is a children's fitness franchise that offers soccer programs for children aged 2 to 8 years old. The programs are designed to introduce children to the sport of soccer and help them develop their motor skills, coordination, and confidence.

Fitness Franchises Aimed at Gen X and Boomers = WIN

As people age, their healthcare needs change. Along with this change, the desire for fitness and healthy living becomes more critical than ever. Fitness franchises geared towards people over 50 years old provide an ideal opportunity for investors to tap into a growing market that promises significant returns. In this article, we will explore why investing in fitness franchises for people over 50 is a great investment.

1. GROWING MARKET

The population of people over 50 is growing at an unprecedented rate. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 2030, people over 50 will make up over 30% of the U.S. population. This demographic has a higher disposable income, and they are more likely to invest in their health and well-being. They have more time and energy to focus on their fitness goals and are willing to spend money to achieve them. This presents

36 MAY 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
HEALTH & FITNESS EDITION

an ideal opportunity for fitness franchises that target this demographic.

2. HIGH RETENTION RATES

The over 50 demographic is highly committed to fitness and healthy living, and as such, they are more likely to stick with their fitness goals and routines. Unlike younger generations who may be more inclined to try new things and quickly move on to the next trend, the over 50 demographic tends to be loyal and dedicated to their fitness routines. This high retention rate provides a stable customer base for fitness franchises and promises a steady flow of revenue.

3. LESS COMPETITION

While there are many fitness franchises available, few specifically cater to the needs of people over 50. This means that there is less competition in this niche market, providing an opportunity for investors to fill the gap and offer specialized services to this demographic. This approach not only differentiates the franchise from its competitors, but it also helps to build customer loyalty.

4. EXPERIENCED AND QUALIFIED TRAINERS

To cater to the needs of people over 50, fitness franchises require experienced and qualified trainers who understand the specific needs and limitations of this demographic. This expertise is not easily found, and it takes time to build a team of qualified trainers. Therefore, investing in fitness franchises geared towards people over 50 means

investing with a company that will provide proven systems to recruit the right team of experienced trainers who understand the specific needs of this demographic.

5. TECHNOLOGY

Technology has revolutionized the fitness industry, and this trend is expected to continue. Fitness franchises that cater to people over 50 can leverage technology to provide personalized training programs, monitor progress, and offer nutritional advice. This not only provides a more personalized experience for customers but also helps to build customer loyalty while allowing the customer to track their progress 24/7.

In conclusion, investing in

fitness franchises geared towards people over 50 is a great investment for several reasons. The growing market, high retention rates, less competition, experienced and qualified trainers, and technology all provide a solid foundation for a successful franchise. As people continue to live longer, healthier lives, the demand for fitness services will only increase, making this niche market an ideal investment opportunity.

If You Are Looking To Invest In A Business That Promotes Health And Wellness Consider A Fitness Franchise!

Fitness franchises are gaining popularity worldwide as people are becoming more health-conscious and seeking ways to stay fit and active. From gym chains to specialized fitness studios, investing in a fitness franchise can offer a range of benefits, both financially and personally. Let's explore some of the top benefits of investing in a fitness franchise.

ESTABLISHED BRAND AND PROVEN BUSINESS MODEL

One of the significant advantages of investing in a fitness franchise is that you are leveraging an established brand with a proven business model. Established fitness franchises have already built a reputation, created marketing strategies, and fine-tuned their operations, saving you time and effort in starting a business from scratch. They often have a loyal customer base, which can help you generate revenue faster compared to starting a new fitness business independently. A well-known brand also brings credibility and trust, which can be crucial in attracting and retaining customers.

ONGOING SUPPORT AND TRAINING

Investing in a fitness franchise typically comes with comprehensive training and ongoing support. Franchise companies often provide initial training to help you

get started, including guidance on operations, marketing, and staff management. They also provide ongoing support, including regular updates on

industry trends, marketing strategies, and operational best practices. This support can be invaluable, especially if you are new to the fitness industry or running a business, as it gives you access to a wealth of knowledge and expertise that can help you navigate challenges and maximize your chances of success.

ACCESS TO SPECIALIZED RESOURCES AND EQUIPMENT

Another benefit of investing in a fitness franchise is access to specialized resources and equipment. Fitness franchises often have exclusive partnerships with equipment manufacturers, which can

provide you with discounted prices or access to the latest fitness equipment. This can save you significant costs compared to purchasing equipment independently. Moreover, fitness franchises may also have specialized resources, such as proprietary software for managing operations or unique workout programs, that can give you a competitive edge in the market.

STRONG MARKET DEMAND

The fitness industry is experiencing tremendous growth, with an increasing number of people prioritizing their health and wellness. According to the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association (IHRSA), the global health club industry generated $96.7 billion in revenue in 2019, and the market is projected to continue growing in the coming years. By investing in a fitness franchise, you are tapping into this growing market demand for fitness services. As people become more health-conscious and seek ways to maintain an active lifestyle, a fitness franchise can provide you with a stable and growing customer base.

DIVERSE REVENUE STREAMS

Many fitness franchises offer diverse revenue streams, which can contribute to your overall profitability. For example, in addition to regular gym memberships, fitness franchises may offer personal training, group classes, nutritional supplements, and

retail sales. This diversification of revenue streams can help you generate income from multiple sources and reduce your reliance on a single revenue stream. It can also help you attract a wider range of customers with different needs and preferences, thereby increasing your potential customer base and overall revenue.

FLEXIBILITY IN OWNERSHIP

Investing in a fitness franchise offers flexibility in ownership options. You can choose to be a hands-on owner, actively involved in the day-to-day operations, or a more passive investor, where you hire a team to run the business. This flexibility allows you to tailor your level of involvement based on your preferences, expertise, and availability. It can be particularly appealing if you are looking for a business that offers a good return on investment without requiring your full-time attention.

POTENTIAL FOR GROWTH AND EXPANSION

Fitness franchises often offer opportunities for growth and expansion. Once you establish a successful fitness franchise location, you can consider opening additional locations in different areas.

Myths About Fitness Franchises AND THE TRUTH

Fitness Franchises have always been attractive investments, but they have become increasingly popular in the past few years, as more people are looking to lead healthier and more active lifestyles. However, as with any business venture, there are a number of myths surrounding the purchase of a Fitness Franchise that can be misleading or inaccurate. In this article, we will explore seven of these myths and provide some clarity around them.

MYTH #1: YOU NEED TO BE AN EXPERT IN FITNESS TO OWN A FITNESS FRANCHISE

Many people believe that owning a fitness franchise requires extensive knowledge

of fitness and health. While it certainly helps to have a background in these areas, it is not necessarily a requirement. As the owner of a fitness franchise, your primary focus will be on managing the business itself, rather than on designing workouts or providing training advice. The franchisor will typically provide training and support to help you learn the ins and outs of the business, and you can always hire trainers or other staff members who have more expertise in fitness to help you run the business.

MYTH #2: YOU NEED A LOT OF MONEY TO BUY A FITNESS FRANCHISE

Another common misconception is that you need to have a lot of money to buy a fitness franchise. While some franchises do require a significant investment, there are also many affordable options available. Additionally, many franchisors offer financing options or other forms of assistance to help you get started. It is important to do your research and find a franchise that fits your budget and financial goals.

MYTH #3: ALL FITNESS FRANCHISES ARE THE SAME

While there are certainly

some similarities between certain fitness franchises, each one is unique in terms of its business model, target audience, and offerings. Today, there are many new and innovative concepts and franchise offerings in the fitness space! It is an exciting time in the fitness industry. It is important to do your research and find a franchise that aligns with your interests and goals, and that has a proven track record of success in the market.

MYTH #4: YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SIT BACK AND LET THE BUSINESS RUN ITSELF

Owning a franchise is not a totally passive investment. While you will have the support of the franchisor and their systems and processes, you will still need to be involved in running the business. Some Franchisors allow for semiabsentee ownership, while others may require you to be an owner/operator. The management duties such as hiring and training staff, to marketing and promoting the business, to managing finances and operations, all have to be well covered by you or your designated manager. As the owner, you are ultimately responsible for the success or failure of the business.

44 MAY 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
7 HEALTH & FITNESS EDITION

MYTH #5: YOU WILL MAKE A LOT OF MONEY QUICKLY

While owning a successful fitness franchise can certainly be profitable, it is not a getrich-quick scheme. It takes time, effort, and dedication to build a successful business, and there are no guarantees of success. You will need to invest in marketing and advertising to attract customers, and you may need to work long hours to get the business off the ground. It is important to have realistic expectations and to be prepared for the challenges and uncertainties that come with owning a business. Franchises have a far higher success rate than non-franchise startups. However, no matter how good the franchise concept and system are, the success of the business will depend on you, and how well you follow the franchisor’s system.

MYTH #6: YOU WILL HAVE COMPLETE CONTROL OVER YOUR BUSINESS

While you will have a fair amount of autonomy as the owner of a franchise, you will still be required to follow the franchisor's guidelines and procedures. This includes everything from the design and layout of the gym or studio to the marketing and advertising strategies you use, to the products and services you offer. The franchisor will have a vested interest in ensuring that all of their franchisees are operating in a consistent and effective manner, and they will provide support and guidance to help you do so. Follow their proven system, and your chances of success are much higher.

MYTH #7: YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SELL YOUR FRANCHISE EASILY

While owning a successful franchise can be a valuable asset, the ease of selling one will depend on many things. The value of a franchise depends on a number of factors, including the location, the financial performance of the business, and the terms of the franchise agreement. Additionally, the franchisor may have certain restrictions or requirements regarding the transfer of ownership. If your exit plan includes eventually selling your business, you will need to carefully review all of the guidelines and requirements that the franchisor lists in the Franchise Disclosure Document (FDD), and the Franchise Agreement. Investing in a Fitness Franchise can be a great option. Once you eliminate the myths,

and get the real story, you will be much better equipped to find a franchise that fits you and your goals. Don’t let the myths scare you. Just do your homework and learn the truth. There are many qualified Franchise experts who are available to assist you in your search for the right franchise for you!

You might call it one-stop shopping, because Floor Coverings International checked a lot of boxes for Ken and Amy Kish. The Grosse Pointe Park, Mich. residents launched their own Floor Coverings International last September. FCI is the brand that’s consistently ranked No. 1 in the mobile flooring category, visiting customers’ homes in a Mobile Flooring Showroom stocked with thousands of flooring samples from top manufacturers. Having launched operations in September, the Kish family’s Floor Coverings International of East Metro Detroit serves customers in eastern Wayne and Macomb counties.

Ken, 57, spent 25 years in the automotive supply industry in the areas of program management and sales. He left that career in 2008 to open a franchise that specialized in helping business clients improve their cash flow and operational efficiencies. But after 10 years, he returned to the automotive industry. Amy, 56, was a CPA for 10 years before leaving to become a stay-at-home mother and later joining her husband in their franchised business. Both were contemplating retirement.

Then looking at where they were in their lives, they decided they were not ready for retirement. “We were too young and active,” said Ken, “and still liked the social and business aspects of working. Ken had always had an interest in home improvement, and CPA Amy had the business and numbers part of a new career down pat. They decided to look for a business they could call their own that would serve as their family legacy down the road and use their own interests and expertise to succeed. Enter Floor Coverings International and what it had to offer.

“We looked at eight different franchise opportunities, but we were drawn to Floor Coverings International because of its stellar training and support. We were looking at this for the long-term and wanted to own a business that offered more flexibility vs. working for a company, while also providing us with an exit strategy,” said Ken. The couple’s daughter –25-year-old Katie Hall – serves as office manager.

Floor Coverings International is a business built on

relationships to provide its customers with the very best in-home flooring experience in North America. Its proven business model has helped hundreds of entrepreneurs thrive in a business that is simple-to-run and easy to scale. While Ken oversees sales and installations, Amy oversees the financial side of the business, and she said it is important for a couple to play to each other’s strengths. “Deciding what each does best is the simplest way to divide responsibilities,” Amy said.

In Floor Coverings International, the couple found a company that has tripled in size since 2005 by putting a laser focus on consumer buying habits and expressed desires, its impressive operating model, growth ability, marketing, advertising, and merchandising.

Floor Coverings International further separates itself from the competition through its customer experience, made up of several simple and integrated steps that exceed customers’ expectations. With the home improvement industry booming, the flooring market is also keeping pace. The global flooring market is expected to grow at an annual rate of more than six percent through 2028, reaching overall sales of $621 billion according to Grand View Research.

“We’ve been so impressed with the technology and durability that we have seen in today’s flooring products,” Ken said. “It’s great to see how far flooring has grown.” Ken’s hot tip in trends? “Everyone is over carpeting. In our first quarter which was better than we expected, most of our jobs are removing carpeting and replacing with one of our many fantastic hard wood or engineered wood options. Especially families with small kids and pets.”

ABOUT FLOOR COVERINGS INTERNATIONAL

Norcross, GA-based Floor Coverings International has ranked consistently as the No. 1 Mobile Flooring Franchise in North America by Entrepreneur Magazine. The 256 franchisees and their Design Associates offer a unique in-home experience with a mobile showroom that comes directly to the client’s door. More than 3,000 flooring choices are available to view in the home with and alongside the existing lighting, paint, and furniture. The company will open several more locations throughout the U.S. and Canada through franchise expansion. For franchise information, please visit www.flooring-franchise.com. My brother and I wanted to find a business that resonated with us and what our core beliefs were. Growing up surfing and being active everyday then progressing to professional rugby but now with families meant we naturally gravitated towards the gym environment and opening a BFT means we can create that fitness focused community we’ve always enjoyed, along with creating a legacy for our children. As soon as we came across the programming and training methodology backed up by head office and how they operate, it became a no-brainer for investing in BFT. As is the case with many other firefighters, Joe had side jobs that he did that

transformed him into an entrepreneur over the past 3 decades. As his experiences outside of fire fighting grew, his entrepreneurial endeavors started taking off and he joined The Franchise Consulting Company to help share his experiences with his fellow brother and sister first responders. That’s where he met Luke McCarthy of the Las Vegas Fire Department who had also joined The Franchise Consulting Company. “It was great to meet a fellow firefighter who had an interest in business and helping the community,” said McCarthy. “First Responder Fran was started in 2017 to support First Responders with knowledge and community where we can learn from each other’s successes and avoid some of the challenges that business owners face.”

“Both Luke and I want to use our experiences to give back to our brothers and sisters who put their lives on the line everyday. There are many options in the world

of business but there is a learning curve. Our goal is to make it a little easier to get the education people need to make informed decisions.” says Griffith.

Now as the Chairs of First Responder Fran, Joe & Luke now oversee the efforts to connect franchise brands and education in the First Responder Community. This is where the 100 Responder Challenge was born. Originally envisioned as a program for firefighters, Joe decided to expand it to all First Responders.

One of the main reasons why firefighters, and other First Responders, have side jobs is the relatively low pay that comes with the job depending on location and size of the department. While firefighting is a crucial public service that requires extensive training and education, the salaries of firefighters are often lower than other professions that require similar levels of training and education. This can make it difficult for firefighters to make ends meet, especially if they have families to support or other financial obligations, hence the reason so many have “Side Gigs” .

The challenge is when thinking about starting a business, the level of capital required may make it daunting for a First Responder to commit. The 100 Responder Challenge will give $10,000 to any First Responder who buys a franchise after working with Joe and First Responder Fran to get the education they need to understand what they

are about to do.

The $10,000 can be used for any purpose but Joe recommends it is used for initial marketing. “You have to get the word out immediately about what you are doing because once you get your core group of initial clients, they will tell their friends and that’s when the business takes off.” says Griffith.

First responders are a vital component of any community. They are the brave individuals who put their lives on the line every day to keep people safe and save lives. From firefighters to paramedics, police officers to emergency medical technicians, these heroes are always on call to respond to emergencies.

However, despite their critical role in society, first responders often face a difficult financial reality. Many of these professionals work long hours for low pay, and as a result, struggle to make ends meet. That's where the idea of

owning a franchise comes in.

Franchises offer an opportunity for first responders to own their own businesses and take control of their financial future.

Franchises come with many benefits, including a proven business model, established brand recognition, and ongoing support from the franchisor.

One of the biggest advantages of owning a franchise as a first responder is the flexibility it offers. Many first responders work long, unpredictable hours, which can make it challenging to maintain a traditional nine-tofive job. Owning a franchise allows these professionals to create their own schedule and work on their own terms.

Franchises also provide a sense of community and support. Franchisees have access to a network of other business owners, as well as ongoing training and support from the franchisor. For first

WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM | MAY 2023 57

responders who may feel isolated or disconnected from their communities, owning a franchise can be a way to feel more connected and engaged.

There are many different types of franchises available, and first responders may find that certain franchises are particularly well-suited to their skills and experience. For example, a first responder with a background in healthcare may be interested in owning a home healthcare franchise, while a firefighter may be drawn to a fire protection or restoration franchise.

Of course, owning a franchise is not without its challenges. Franchise owners must be prepared to invest time, money, and effort into building and growing their businesses. However, for first responders who are willing to put in the work, owning a franchise can provide a path to financial stability and independence.

In addition, owning a franchise can be a way for first responders to give back to their communities in a different way. By providing jobs and services to their local area, franchise owners can have a positive impact on the people and places they serve.

Balancing a side job with a demanding and unpredictable first responder job is challenging. Despite these challenges, many First Responders find that having a side job is a rewarding and fulfilling way to supplement their income and make a positive impact on their communities long after

they retire.

Joe and Luke’s hope is that through the 100 Responder Initiative, they will inspire other groups to support First Responders after “The Drop”to match their program. In addition, many franchisors offer a “First Responder Fran Discount” where they give a

discount off their franchise fees and royalties . If you would like to connect with Joe to learn about how to be a member of the 100 Responder Challenge and get $10,000 to start your franchise or if you have ideas about how to support the First Responder Community, please reach out.

Joe's entrepreneurial and public service career has spanned almost 4 decades. From his service to our country in the US Air Force, his service as a Fire Lieutenant for the past 20+ years and as a lifelong entrepreneur and franchisee, Joe uses a Servant leader mentality to assist his client’s needs through active listening, conceptualization, foresight, innovation, and stewardship. He actively works with transitioning military veterans and First Responders.

What happens when you mix a SEAL Team Squadron Commander/Stanford MBA turned fitness visionary with a team of industry innovators who have decades of experience and a common goal to revolutionize the landscape of fitness? andy Hetrick is the founder of OutFit and has a story that could only happen in the United States of America.

Navy SEAL, Stanford MBA, bootstrap entrepreneur who spent 15 years building TRX® —one of the best loved and most recognized global brands in fitness. For OutFit, Hetrick assembled a team of “true avengers,” as he affectionately refers to them. Chief Operating Officer, Darren Jacobson, was a senior executive at world famous Zumba Fitness. Prior to that, Darren oversaw Fitness and Product for Sir Richard Branson’s Virgin health club chain, Virgin Active. President of Franchise Operations, Jeff Rosga, spent the better part of two decades as an executive at Lifetime Fitness, building the Lifetime Academy and helping Lifetime grow to over 1.3 million members and almost $400 million in annual sales. Quincy Carroll, a classmate of Randy’s at Stanford Business School in 2003, joined OutFit as Chief

Technology Officer after a legendary career building cutting edge consumer technology platforms at Apple, Ebay, and CrunchyRoll. Apropos to OutFit’s business model, Carroll even did a stint in Europe building a ride share service that was acquired by BlaBla Car, the main European competitor to Uber. Anil Shetty, the Chief Financial Officer, and Fraser Quelch, the Head of Education & Training, each joined OutFit after spending more than a decade with Hetrick building the world-famous fitness brand, TRX, which Hetrick sold to private equity and exited in late 2020 on the heels of

the company’s best year ever —having delivered $87m in revenue and $21m in EBITDA —to found OutFit.

This high performing team has its sights set on dominating the outdoor fitness category, coalescing around Randy’s vision for OutFit. Hetrick’s early years were spent in the beach communities of Southern California. He attended the University of Southern California, where he rowed Crew and became inspired by the idea of serving the country. After graduating in 1987, he attended Officer Candidate School and was commissioned as a Naval

officer prior to attending BUD/S Class 157 and becoming a US Navy SEAL.

Hetrick served the country for more than 14 years— with multiple operational deployments at SEAL Team One and, later as both a Troop Commander and Squadron Commander at the SEAL’s famed counterterror unit. As a SEAL, Hetrick deployed on missions around the world, where access to physical training equipment was extremely limited. On a counter-piracy operation in SouthEast Asia, he cobbled together an ingenious harness made of nylon webbing and a jiujitsu belt which had accidentally made it into his kit bag. He secured the harness to a door, leaned back against it, and lifted his body against gravity. Viola! The ancestor to what would later become the TRX Suspension Trainer® was born. Upon returning to

base, Hetrick began making his harnesses for other members of his squadron, and the popularity of his “gizmo” began to spread across the members of his unit.

After retiring from military service in 2001, Hetrick earned an MBA from Stanford University. In 2003, he founded TRX, the company that would ultimately produce the TRX Suspension Trainer and transform it into one of the most famous and recognized exercise systems on the planet. Over the next 18 years, TRX expanded its equipment line and its black & yellow training products have become ubiquitous in gyms around the world. The company won multiple placements on the Inc 500 Fastest Growing Private Companies Roster, Outside Magazine’s Best Places To Work, and was selected as the 2017 IHRSA Company of the Year – in no small part due to Hetrick’s

ingenuity and unflagging perseverance.

Hetrick left TRX at the end of 2020 to bring to life a new concept that he had been planning for more than a decade. Way back in 20112012 he had conceived a unique brand activation called “TRX-on-Tour.” The company customized a “tricked out Sprinter Van” and spent two years driving it around the country supporting key account openings, attending outdoor festivals, and exhibiting at regional conferences and athletic events to show the world what TRX Group Fitness Classes looked like in the great outdoors. Although the technologies like geolocation and online registration and billing had not yet evolved to make such a business scalable, the experiences that the TRXon-Tour Team delivered were universally acclaimed as “the best and most fun workouts

67 WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM | MAY 2023

available anywhere.” Hetrick became convinced that the concept for a network of outdoor mobile fitness service providers was a winner. It was only a matter of time until the technology required to scale such a service would be developed. During the next ten years, companies like Uber (geolocation); Mindbody (online registration & billing); and Instagram (efficient social media channels for affinity group communication) all became realities. By 2020, Hetrick believed the time for his revolutionary business

concept had arrived. He wrote a business plan, formed a company, and registered the trademark for its new name: OutFit. The concept for a franchise that would change the landscape of fitness was born.

In early 2021, Hetrick raised some money and began assembling a team of industry rockstars, along with some eager newbies, to build all the assets they would need to test the concept. Jeff Rosga began developing the concept for OutFit’s innovative and ergonomic van designs.

Quincy Carroll assembled a crack team of developers to build OutFit’s cutting-edge technology platform, which includes all the geolocation features and registration/ billing functionalities of a company like Uber, plus a content delivery system and a state-of-the-art class management platform, along with business intelligence and management systems. And Fraser Quelch recruited a bevy of outstanding coaches and began developing the first two years’ worth of preprogrammed exercise

68 MAY 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

IN 2011-2012 HETRICK CONCEIVED A UNIQUE BRAND ACTIVATION CALLED “TRX-ON-TOUR.” THE COMPANY CUSTOMIZED A “TRICKED OUT SPRINTER VAN” AND SPENT TWO YEARS DRIVING IT AROUND THE COUNTRY, SUPPORTING KEY ACCOUNT OPENINGS, ATTENDING OUTDOOR FESTIVALS, AND EXHIBITING AT REGIONAL CONFERENCES AND ATHLETIC EVENTS—TO SHOW THE WORLD WHAT TRX GROUP FITNESS CLASSES LOOKED LIKE IN THE GREAT OUTDOORS.

content, along with the staff education systems to support an eventual franchise. By the end of the year, the company had developed and validated all its systems and had opened a pilot location in Fort Lauderdale, Florida to begin delivering its service to paying customers.

In January 2022, OutFit began the second phase of its development, launching and growing its own corporate market. Darren Jacobson joined the team, charged with building and growing the company’s corporate market. And grow it he did. During the next 12-months, OutFit launched four more corporate units and its member base more than tripled, growing net subscriptions by an average of 5% per month in every month since launch. Simultaneously, the OutFit team began working on the backend technology systems, operations and training manuals, digital education systems, and documentation that would be required to commence franchise sales. In March of 2023, OutFit officially launched franchise

sales, on schedule and as planned. To learn more about becoming an OutFit franchisee, visit OutFitFranchise.com.

SO WHAT IS OUTFIT?

OutFit is a technologyenabled, outdoor mobile fitness service. It is monetized with a subscription model and built to scale as a franchise network. The franchised fleet of world class gymson-wheels are owned and

operated by local TRX-certified coaches, called “OIC’s” (OutFitters-In-Charge), and are networked via a state-ofthe-art technology platform and member app. OutFit takes workouts outside, where everyone feels their best! Energized by sunshine, blue skies, fresh air and by an incredible community of likeminded friends from the neighborhood.

OutFit has a simple goal: To change the world of

69 WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM | MAY 2023

fitness forever. The company believes that EVERYONE should have access to affordable, convenient, expertly coached fitness experiences. OutFit thinks that fitness shouldn’t be confined to virtual reality or the closed walls of gyms that less than 20% of Americans will ever join. OutFit delivers actual reality with affordably priced, expertly led “boutique” fitness delivered directly into the inspiring public spaces that surround us in our neighborhoods every day. The service also delivers personal and small group private training directly to the cul-desacs and driveways of people who cannot or do not care to drive to a crowded, sweaty brick & mortar health club filled with fluorescent lighting and recycled air.

Outdoor exercise is not a new concept – you get outside, you run, you bike, you do yoga. What makes OutFit a “world changing idea” is its synchronized

network of owner-operators, each delivering their services under a single premiumbrand experience. Together, these providers service an interconnected community of members (a.k.a. Outfitters) who are all brought together by a high-tech platform & mobile app that combines

geolocation, registration, booking, payment and a host of nifty user features to keep members connected to each other and motivated to achieve their fitness goals.

Independent coffee shops have existed since the time of the Romans… then along came Starbucks and the coffee game changed forever. OutFit proposes to accomplish no less in the outdoor fitness landscape, except that their mobile gyms will be owned by the very small business entrepreneurs who operate them within the neighborhoods in which they live. OutFit aims to not only elevate heart rates but to elevate spirits. As its network grows, it will empower an army of individual small business owners to live rewarding professional lives while delivering the gift of health and fitness into neighborhoods all across the country.

OutFit has created a first-of-

its kind subscription service that is similar to a ride share or a meal delivery service, except that it delivers large group fitness experiences on permitted public spaces, undeveloped public lands, parking lots, schools, business parks, and to residential cul-de-sacs and driveways. Hence the metaphor members often use to describe OutFit’s service: the “Uber® of Fitness.”

The technology suite that powers OutFit and coordinates its network of members, vans, and coaches is perhaps the company’s most unique and defensible feature. Built by a longtime Silicon Valley tech wizard and his amazing team of developers, there is no technology in fitness like OutFit’s. It combines the capabilities of Uber®, Mindbody® and Classpass® into a single proprietary platform. Open the app on your phone, instantly find any of the upcoming outdoor workouts near you on the map, view

the schedule and book your spot for the class and coach you want, all in seconds! You aren’t limited to a particular type or number of classes each month because OutFit gives you unlimited monthly classes for under $100. You can also invite other app users, connect profiles with your friends, help track and motivate each other’s workouts, and create private exercise groups in the locations of your choosing with the coach you want.

Technology is the hub of OutFit, and the company’s slickly customized “gymson-wheels” are the spokes. OutFitters also enjoy access to any OutFit location, at home or when traveling to other OutFit service areas.

OutFit’s franchise model has the industry’s lowest cost of entry. For less than $95k you can have your own tricked out transit van packed full of TRX equipment, operating systems, and preprogrammed class content – and be operating your business

within 90 days! OutFit also offers extraordinary business ownership opportunities to female, veteran, and minority entrepreneurs who might otherwise avoid costly mainstream corporate franchises. OutFit’s low-cost/ low-overhead/high-revenue model also allows trainers across the country to fulfill their dreams of business ownership (rather than giving 50-70% of their training dollars to a brick & mortar gym) and to build profitable careers with a clear path to generating real net worth for their families.

OutFit’s philanthropic efforts are as important as the health and fitness it delivers to its members. To take care of those who serve the community, OutFit provides FREE Unlimited Open Family Memberships (a $129/mo. Value) to all active-duty municipal 1st Responders (Police, Fire and EMTs).

Vital Stretch franchises are built on improving well-being.

science-based approach to assisted stretching that is unique in the industry.

WHAT IS THE VITAL STRETCH®?

Dr. Rob Goldring and Melissa Goldring have a combined 50-plus years of experience treating people with musculoskeletal issues. Rob, a licensed Chiropractic Physician, and Missy, a licensed Physical Therapist, spent their careers helping patients overcome injuries and other health concerns.

“As treating clinicians, we understand movement and injury patterns as well as preventative strategies,” Rob explains. What sets the couple apart, however, is they took their decades of expertise and built something new — The Vital Stretch Method, a

“We’ve spent our careers dedicated to helping our patients move freely and live fully,” shares Missy. “But we realized that among our patients, not all their needs were being met by the wellness options out there.” Rob adds, “Stretching isn’t new. But the way we have put together our techniques is.” Once the Goldrings saw the need, they knew they had to combine their experience to address it.

The Vital Stretch technique

blends dynamic movement, static holds and press-andrelease (PNR) stretching to relieve tight muscles, taut fascia and stiff joints. In addition to their custom technique, Rob and Missy also designed customengineered tables, straps and tools to help provide better results and deeper relaxation. Additionally, the program is custom-tailored to each person’s needs and health and well-being goals.

BUILDING A FRANCHISE

The pandemic not only shifted people’s mindsets about how to care for their well-being, but it also changed the nature of how many Americans work.

74 MAY 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
HEALTH &
FITNESS EDITION

More and more people are focused on their personal wellness. That shift — working from home — has made more people interested in personal services like assisted stretching.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the personal care services industry is projected to grow by more than 8% by 2030. That is almost five times faster than the average 1.7% growth projected for total employment.

“Many people say, ‘I feel healthy — what do I do to stay that way?’” Rob says. “The pandemic wore on us, and now we have to go back to work and keep going. People have become much more aware of their wellness and how vital an aspect it is to our mental and physical wellbeing in general.”

Rob and Missy’s franchise system capitalizes on the growing interest in improved well-being. But it doesn’t require that franchisees have a background as a physical therapist or chiropractor like the Goldrings to be a certified Vital Stretch Practitioner (VSPc). Interested entrepreneurs receive a thorough certification training program for the owner, training and certification for the VSP before starting, assistance in launching their location and help marketing their services. Missy shares, “Rob and I do hands-on training.”

THE PATH AHEAD

Obviously, Rob and Missy are not your average entrepreneurs. Not only did

their franchise system develop out of their passion for better health, but it also reflects the need they saw among their patients. What has allowed them continued success is their extensive clinical and business development experience that they built The Vital Stretch on.

Their mission now is to bring the benefits of assisted stretching to communities across the country. Rob and Missy’s commitment to this carries over to their franchisees. They strive to work hand-in-hand with franchise owners to provide the training, support and guidance they need for all aspects of the business, from marketing and operations to client care and service.

“People go where they get the best experience,” Missy says. “What we do is offer that — whether they are seeking help to recover from an injury or to age more gracefully.” The

benefits of assisted stretching are numerous, from better circulation and posture to increased energy and better sleep. “The Vital Stretch offers full-body wellness,” Rob concludes. “It’s not a one size fits all approach, and it helps people of all ages — they not only feel better, but they see themselves moving better.”

The wellness industry has historically been recession resilient, making it an excellent opportunity for entrepreneurs. Interested in learning more about this exciting wellness and personal care service trend? Visit franchising@ thevitalstretch.com.

From Sore to Score: How Massage Enhances Fitness Performance

Massage has been practiced for thousands of years for its relaxation benefits, stress reduction, and promotion of overall wellbeing. However, its benefits extend beyond just relaxation. Massage therapy has become an essential tool for athletes of all levels and individuals who exercise regularly

to maximize their fitness performance. As a result, it is gaining popularity among entrepreneurs who recognize the growing demand for its benefits, making it a smart business investment.

According to a recent study by the American Massage Therapy Association, 63% of people who receive massage therapy do so for health and

wellness reasons, including improving their fitness performance.

“One of the main benefits of massage for fitness enthusiasts is its ability to enhance post-workout recovery,” says Terrie YardleyNohr, LMT, Director of Massage Therapy at MassageLuXe.

“After a strenuous workout, muscles can become sore

HEALTH & FITNESS EDITION

and fatigued, leading to decreased performance during subsequent workouts. Massage has been shown to improve circulation, reduce muscle tension, and increase range of motion, all of which can help to speed up the recovery process and allow for more frequent, intense workouts.”

With more than 30 years of experience in the industry, Yardley-Nohr is one of the best witnesses to the evolution of massage therapy from a luxury indulgence to a mainstream must –especially when it comes to sports and fitness.

“Massage can prevent injury by improving flexibility and reducing the risk of muscle strains and tears. By increasing range of motion, we can help athletes to perform movements with greater ease and efficiency, which can lead to better performance and reduced risk of injury,” adds YardleyNohr. “Regular visits to a massage therapist can also help to prevent the development of adhesions and scar tissue, which can cause pain and limit mobility.”

Another benefit of massage for fitness performance is its ability to enhance mental focus and concentration. Many athletes struggle with anxiety and stress, which

can negatively impact their performance. Massage has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety levels by lowering cortisol levels, which can help athletes to feel more relaxed and focused during competition and training.

Massage can also help to improve overall cardiovascular health, which is essential for athletes and fitness enthusiasts. By increasing circulation, massage can help to improve oxygen and nutrient delivery to muscles, which can enhance endurance and reduce fatigue. Additionally, massage has been shown to reduce blood pressure and improve heart rate variability, both of which are important indicators of cardiovascular health.

Finally, massage can be used to improve sleep quality, which is crucial for athletes and individuals who exercise regularly. During sleep, the body repairs and regenerates, which is essential for recovery and performance. Massage has been shown to improve sleep quality by reducing stress and promoting relaxation, which can help athletes to get a more restful night's sleep.

The wellness experts at MassageLuXe, the fastgrowing massage and spa franchise with more than 75

locations nationwide, report a marked increase in the number of clients of all fitness levels coming into their spas to help improve their workouts, prevent injuries, and speed up recovery.

“As a runner I find it very important to get a massage regularly to help stretch and work on my muscles I’m using. During my marathon training I was getting a massage at least every other week. This really helped me prevent from getting any injuries and keeping my muscles loose and ready for my next running adventure,” says Christine Kent, a MassageLuXe client in St. Louis, MO. “ I have trained for marathons without getting a massage regularly and found that my muscles would be tight and sore and I would have a lot of pain in my legs. I will never train for a marathon without getting regular massages during my training.”

Brandon Thomas, a MassageLuXe client in Grapevine, Texas adds, “MassageLuXe has been a game changer in my overall health. When I started coming a year ago, I was overweight and struggling to work out because of all the pain in my muscles and joints. The work I have had done has helped me to maintain my workout plan and helped me to lose 80lbs!”

Father-to-Son Success Story Creates a Superstar of Generational Businesses

There is a long-held statistic that says 70 percent of familyowned businesses don’t survive the second generation. If so, 46-yearold Darren Impson would be a strong candidate for valedictorian of the 30 percent that do.

Having worked as a securities lending trader in Manhattan, Impson and his wife, Kelly, made the decision in 2003 to leave the frenzy of New York City to join his father, Merle, who had purchased

a Paul Davis Restoration franchise in Tampa four years earlier after retiring as an executive in the paper industry.

Impson began working as an estimating associate for his father’s business, but only a year later he was named “Rookie of the Year” for the entire Paul Davis network after their franchise enjoyed record sales for the franchisor recognized as one of the most trusted brands in the insurance restoration industry. Impson also became a partner

in his father’s company and in 2010 he bought his father’s franchise outright before adding another neighboring franchise in 2012, allowing him to service all of Hillsborough County.

Fast-forward and it’s been almost 20 years since Impson became an owner of Paul Davis Restoration of Tampa and the growth of the company has been meteoric. Sadly, they lost Merle in July of 2022.The growth and tremendous success of his company is a tribute to him. It

92 MAY 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM

has become one of the largest in the Paul Davis network of more than 300 franchises, boasts $20 million in annual revenue, operates out of a 30,000 square-foot office/ warehouse space in Tampa, has 55 employees and a fleet of more than 25 branded vehicles to serve its customers and clients. Impson is looking to add 20,000 square feet of warehouse space and he also owns another Paul Davis franchise with a partner that serves Pasco and Hernando counties.

Impson is a bonafide second-generation success story as a disaster recovery contractor, restoring homes and buildings damaged by flood, fire, lightning and more. A full-service, residential, and commercial emergency cleanup and restoration company for disasters of all sizes, Impson and his team help put families and businesses back together when disaster strikes.

However, nothing could have prepared Impson and his team when they were at ground zero last Sept. 28 when Hurricane Ian made landfall in Florida as a Category 4 storm with 150 mph winds, making it one of the strongest storms to ever hit the U.S. mainland. For Impson, at least there was strength in numbers, as Paul Davis was thrust headfirst into

one of the largest disaster recovery operations the nation has ever seen.

“One of the benefits of being in a franchise network is the power of seeing all of the offices coming together in a hurricane of any large disaster that involves several counties or even states,” Impson said. “There were more than 39 offices that responded from all over the country to mobilize and manage the hurricane claims. We handled more than 3,000 individual claims, collectively.”

Impson’s teams oversaw everything beginning with the initial emergency work, such as the drying out, boarding up, cleaning up and remediation of structures. They also managed their customer’s contents and whether they needed to be moved to Paul Davis’s storage facility. “We can get their precious contents secured so that we can do the demolition, and of course, the reconstruction of their property,” said Impson, who added that his office assisted an entire neighborhood that was affected by storm-surge flooding. “That is the crux of what we do on a daily basis and especially during a hurricane.”

Impson has come a long way since coming to Florida after spending five years

working in the financial industry in New York City fresh out of college. He worked in Manhattan before, during and after the September 11 attacks, where he and Kelly lived in Greenwich Village, near the World Trade Center. After opening his Paul Davis franchise, Merle Impson had told his son that if he and Kelly ever wanted to leave NYC and start a family, the Tampa Bay area was a wonderful place to do so.

“My wife worked for IBM at the time, and they were at the forefront of working remotely, so once her boss gave her the OK to move to Tampa and keep her job, we decided to make the move,” Impson said. “After going into business with my dad in 2003, several hurricanes hit Florida the next year and I was hooked on the business because of the crucial role we played in being able to aid people in their time of greatest need.”

Impson said he used his background in finance as a stepping stone to first investing in and later purchasing the Paul Davis franchise from his father. “It helped me to understand the importance of financial acumen,” Impson said. “Our success over the last 20 years was because of finding “A” players who were attracted to our culture and values.”

Today, Impson is already looking ahead to the next generation to possibly

carry on the family’s legacy with Paul Davis. Impson’s daughter, Bella, assists the Paul Davis business development team during her summer breaks from high school.

And while Paul Davis is always giving help to the community in its times of greatest need, it also gives back. Kelly Impson makes sure that Paul Davis is closely aligned with the community and charitable partnerships such as The Children’s Dream Fund, where she is a board member. The St. Petersburg,

Fla.-based organization fulfills the dreams of children who live in West Central Florida who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.

“Paul Davis Restoration of Tampa has been supporting The Children’s Dream Fund by hosting events to raise money and we have made at least eight children’s dreams come true by raising more than $40,000 for this amazing cause,” Impson said.

Keller is currently completing the requirements of the PGA Master Professional Program. The PGA has over 30,000 PGA Members and less than 350 have earned Master Professional status. During the lesson process, we start with an interview and set goals. Students are assigned a CoachNow account so they can view notes and

videos of their progress and keep in touch with their coach. As teachers, we can only ask a student to move in a way they are physically capable of performing. We go through a detailed injury history of a student and determine if a student has any physical limitations or swing faults when diagnosing their swing. Swing faults are typically easier to change a specific movement pattern. Physical limitations are often uncovered in a functional movement screen or previous injury history.

Failing a particular functional movement screen predicts what swing faults we will see with each student. There is a fundamental reason why the ball reacts the way it does at impact and White Rose Golf utilizes video analysis, ball analysis and club analysis during every lesson. Additional technology includes Boditrak, which allows a player to track pressure shifts during the swing and K-Coach Golf which measures 3D body movement to the exact degree and biofeedback training programs that accelerate the learning process.

The Club Fitting process is another major component of the business. White Rose Golf is recognized as a leader in helping golfers find the equipment that best compliments their swing. We examine launch angles and spin rates while working with

all the major manufactures and determine the best performing club head that produces optimal ball flight. Parameters we fit include club head, lie angle, shaft, flex, length, stiffness, and grip.

Customers have the ability to play over 100,000 courses around the world, including many local courses and of course the famous courses seen on the PGA Tour and around the world. College teams and high school players often practice inside and play practice rounds in preparation of upcoming tournament courses they have never seen or played. In addition, one of the most popular features includes the leagues we offer, highlighted by the two-person Winter League where the winning team receives a Golf Trip to the Delaware beaches.

Since we are a leader in simulator technology, we are also dealers for several simulator companies and accessories. The facility also serves as a venue for meetings, team-building activities, and parties.

The typical customer experience starts with a lesson. They enjoy the interaction and often schedule a club fitting or sign up for leagues, practice times and other programs. They often refer their friends due to a great experience and the cycle continues with the new customer.

From a business opportunity, the golf simulator market was valued at 1485.23 million in 2022 and projected to reach 2998.04 million by 2030. Golf Professionals, Club Fitters, Golf Enthusiasts and Investors are all great candidates in obtaining a territory and opening a franchise location. The owner has survived the ups and downs of owning a business and streamlined the process through six years of experience and two locations. The business presents multiple revenue streams with a fun atmosphere of likeminded individuals who enjoy the game of golf. If you are interested in learning more about obtaining a territory please contact White Rose Golf & Training Center.

Reducing Digital Fatigue: 4 Ways to Reach Your Audience Without Straining Their Mental Health

Digital Fatigue, we’ve all experienced it. The definition is described as: the feeling of exhaustion or overwhelm that can result from excessive use of digital devices, such as smartphones, tablets, computers, and televisions. Each day, people are subconsciously ignoring digital content while doom scrolling. The constant overload of information has caused people to disassociate with what is being thrown at them. Keep reading to learn a few tips and tricks when it comes to reducing digital fatigue in your marketing mix…

QUALITY OVER QUANTITY

One approach is to prioritize quality over quantity when it comes to digital content. Rather than bombarding consumers with ads that

don’t resonate, businesses can focus on creating highquality, engaging content that is tailored to the needs and interests of their target audience. While the quantity may be lower, you are left with personalized, meaningful interactions with your audience leading to higher conversion rate.

DIVERSIFY YOUR MARKETING CHANNELS

Digital is definitely not the end all be all of marketing. There are other ways you can reach your ideal customers outside of a digital box. In urban areas, out of home marketing is a great way to get your brand and business in front of literally anyones eyes. Buses, billboards, local transit and bus stops are a great way for people to stop and read about what you have to offer. Direct mail, catalogs, newspapers and other targeted print publications can help you reach that ideal audience. Direct mail is known to have a higher response rate compared to other forms of

marketing. According to the Data & Marketing Association (DMA), direct mail has a response rate of 5.1%. Combined with different strategies and a more personalized approach, you can get more out of your marketing knowing you're standing out in different ways.

CREATE SHORT FORM CONTENT

The need for digital content in marketing is essential. But how can you cut through the digital noise and stand out amongst everyone else? The rise of information overload has created a decline in the overall attention span of the average user. Creating short form content that is easy to skim, understand and digest is the best way to capture an audience and get people interested in your business. Plus, shorter content means less time someone has to be looking at a screen while viewing your content.

approach to reduce digital fatigue in your audience is taking your business to local events or trade shows where your ideal clientele will be. It’s a softer, more effective approach to achieve brand awareness and get valuable face to face time with them. Trade shows can also provide you with an opportunity to differentiate yourself from competitors by showcasing unique products, services, or features that you have

to offer. This can help to establish a competitive advantage and stand out in a crowded marketplace.

It’s important to keep in mind that just like fitness, marketing and direct mail results can take time. Being consistent and patient with your strategy can be a sure way for you to reach your goals. With the right messaging, direct mail and out of home marketing can help reduce digital fatigue in your recipients and create a

more personalized experience. By leveraging the unique benefits of these marketing channels, you can build stronger relationships with customers and drive sales and revenue growth.

Experiencing Burnout?

Two-thirds of full-time workers experience burnout on the job. While our typical image of a worker suffering burnout might be a doctor, nurse, or therapist, this is a big problem in the corporate world as well. As it turns out, mismanaged corporations are a huge cause behind workplace burnout, and there is little the professional working for them can do if they choose to stay.

WHAT IS WORKPLACE BURNOUT?

According to the Mayo Clinic, “burnout is a special type

of work-related stress — a state of physical or emotional exhaustion that also involves a sense of reduced accomplishment and loss of personal identity.”

The World Health Organization calls it a “syndrome conceptualized as resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed. It is characterized by three dimensions:

• Feelings of energy depletion or exhaustion;

• Increased mental distance from one’s job, or feelings of negativism or cynicism related to one's job; and

• Reduced professional efficacy.”

Burnout is not considered a medical diagnosis, but an “occupational phenomenon.” Meaning, while certain people may be more likely to become burnt out, the fault does not lie inherently with the person, but is connected to their work.

THE OPPOSITE OF BURNOUT IS ENGAGEMENT.

UC Berkeley psychologist and the world’s foremost burnout expert, Dr. Christina Maslach, describes the antithesis of burnout as ‘work engagement’ or “a

HEALTH & FITNESS EDITION

persistent, positive affective‐motivational state of fulfillment…”

Think of a job you’ve loved in the past. It didn’t necessarily exclude stress or working long, tiring days – in fact, some of the best positions require all of that. However, the measures taken by your management or employer to keep you motivated and engaged in that work were likely much more successful than a job you’ve hated.

WHAT CAUSES BURNOUT?

We can understand burnout by thinking of everyone we work with, and ourselves, as having two sliding scales; one for satisfaction, and the other for dissatisfaction. Rather than satisfaction and dissatisfaction being opposites, they can work alongside each other, building up quite the reserve of frustration in an individual.

So, while a person’s passion and motivation to do their job well (satisfaction) might be high, the lack of their fundamental needs being met – lack of sufficient salary, personal time off, safe work environment,

etc. – (dissatisfaction), might eventually overwhelm their motivation, leading to burnout. With burnout, it’s often a case of being a frog in a slow-to-boil pot; the employee might not notice their dissatisfaction all at once, because it’s a gradual, building process.

This begs the question, what are the main irritants that lead to the pot boiling over? A Gallup study of nearly 7,500 full-time employees sought to answer this exact question. It found the following to be the five most common causes of workplace burnout:

1. Unfair treatment at work.

2. Unmanageable workload.

3. Lack of role clarity.

4. Lack of communication and support from manager.

5. Unreasonable time pressure.

The biggest takeaway from the Gallup study is that burnout is not inevitable. The findings emphasized that leaders “can prevent – and reverse – burnout by changing how [they] manage and lead [their] employees.” Meaning, if you’re suffering from burnout, and the onus is completely on

you to change and get better, without any consideration from your workplace as to its role in the matter, you likely won’t find the relief you need in your current position.

BURNOUT TREATMENT NEEDS A DIFFERENT APPROACH.

Unfortunately, most treatment for burnout is aimed, ultimately, at getting the individual to return to the workplace with successful performance. This is not always congruous with what is best for the individual or what will prevent burnout from recurring.

If you’re suffering from burnout, and you find that your organization is unwilling to change, the hard truth is that you may not find relief. Leaving may be the best option for your overall health and wellbeing. Until corporate culture can adjust to meet its employees’ needs, businesses will continue to see turnover and burnout impacting their bottom line.

The Ultimate Win-Win: Changing Lives While Living Your Dream

HEARING AND LOSS

Our hearing systems are miraculous and mystifying. Few consider the seamless physiologic orchestration they experience when they hear…. until it is interrupted by hearing loss. Hearing loss is essentially ubiquitous but complicated; it is rarely just perceived as a reduced volume of sound. The deficit impacts the ability to understand speech and detect important sounds. Most hearing losses occur as a result of our longevity combined with simply being present in the noisiness of life.

Unfortunately, the physical changes that appear with hearing loss can be problematic and cause alterations in brain function; studies show hearing loss can lead to brain atrophy, memory, and cognitive difficulties. Although these biological changes are significant and are associated with negative aftereffects, the psychosocial impacts cannot be minimized. The sense of hearing and act of listening are deeply

related; both are vital to our ability to perceive the world around us, develop and sustain relationships, facilitate introspection, and enjoy the beauty of music.

Hearing loss is often misinterpreted as lack of responsiveness which leads partners, friends, and colleagues to feel frustrated, or worse annoyed. This is why it is not unusual for a lovedone to be the first to raise concerns about hearing loss— even noticing the change prior to the individual with the deficit. In this situation, it is common for the person with hearing loss to then feel badgered and pickedon. Furthermore, when they acknowledge the inherent change, feelings of sadness with the perceived loss follow; some avoid communication and withdraw from social activities altogether. These problems can be exacerbated by the fact that hearing loss is prevalent among those with health ailments such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes. The addition of

hearing loss may feel like salt being poured in a wound.

RECONNECTING LIVES THROUGH BETTER HEARING

The Hear Again America journey guides those with hearing loss on a path back to connection, meaning and wellness. Former Security Expert Returns Home for a New Career With Pillar To Post Home Inspectors®

are failing. As such, I moved around a lot – Vancouver, Toronto, Montreal, Chicago, Minneapolis, Indianapolis, Phoenix, and Dallas.” So why home inspection as a new career?

You could say Steve Maher knows a bit about homes. And keeping them safe. After a 30-year career in security he ought to. “After a dozen years or so in the field, I worked my way into corporate as a start-up/turn-around leader for two different North American security integration and monitoring companies. Eventually, I became their ‘start-up/turn-around’ executive to either start new departments or fix ones that

“During my moves from city to city, we needed places to live,” said Steve. “I’ve been through the real estate purchase/sale process many times. I had respect for the inspection process as it was always an insightful experience for us. My wife Janet worked as a Realtor, so that helped us move around quickly, find a good and fair deal; and now she will help me in the home inspection business because she has tremendous knowledge and contacts in the real estate community. She also ‘gets it’ and knows how to make the real estate agents’ lives easier, and she knows what reliability and integrity looks like in this field. With every home we owned, improvements were made.

Everything from cosmetic all the way to taking rooms down to the studs and doing full renovations. This was a rewarding experience. We uncovered many problems, and became very good at spotting them, solving them, and improving our homes tremendously.”

Steve now runs his own Pillar To Post Home Inspectors® business and serves Kokomo, Lafayette, Frankfurt, Delphi, Logansport, Peru, Wabash, Marion, Tipton in Indiana. Among the many reasons he chose Pillar To Post were the innovative technologies the company introduced during the Covid “contactless home inspections.” These advanced technologies, along with the proven business model, provide an exceptional home inspection with unique and innovative features that are all delivered within a seamless brand experience. All developed pre-pandemic fasttracked when the pandemic struck, the new features

further highlight Pillar To Post Home Inspectors’ standing as a visionary in its industry. The package is now known as the Ultimate Home Inspection and it’s revolutionizing the home inspection industry. So much so that the company was just awarded the muchcoveted Best Innovators by Franchise Update Media in the category of “best customer service tools.”

Steve hopes to build a legacy for the future, “It will be a new and I think fantastic experience. My wife and I moved here to be closer to our son James, and we will work out a plan for him to hopefully join the business, then eventually take it over.”

Simple math quickly demonstrates that a home inspection is money wellspent when making what is typically the largest single investment most people will ever make. That’s one piece of advice that’s hard to argue,” said Steve. “No one needs surprises with what they are spending to buy a home in today’s market.”

In fact, during the housing market boom, many homebuyers were encouraged to forego home inspections to get the upper hand in an offer they were making. Such was the competition in most major markets for homes.

There were often more than five serious offers on one home and waiving some contingencies led to the winning bid. Now, one to two years later the horror stories are hitting the news.

“Many people who waived home inspections to get the deal done now have buyer’s remorse,” shared Steve.

“Skipping an inspection can cost you hundreds and worse, thousands of dollars of missed issues. With these technical differentiators we become less about ‘checking a box’ in the home ownership process, and more about bringing meaningful solutions to the table to drive confident home ownership for our customers. Moreover, I look forward to the day that long-time home-owners leverage home inspectors.”

Just like an annual checkup at the doctor, home

inspections every year or two can bring fresh solutions, often money-saving ones, to existing home-owners to help them understand how healthy their home is, and where attention may be required. Having that report handy will also put that home in a much better position to be sold.

About Pillar To Post Home Inspectors®

Founded in 1994, Pillar To Post Home Inspectors is the largest home inspection company in North America with home offices in Toronto and Tampa. There are over 500 franchises located in 49 states and nine Canadian provinces. Longterm plans include adding 500 to 600 new franchisees over the next five years. The Foundation For Success: How to Promote Your New Fitness Franchise

Just like getting in shape, building awareness for your new business requires you to go back to the basics. With good form, dedication and planning, you can create a healthy way to bring your fitness franchise to the next level. Here’s what that might look like.

First up, let's talk about your services. As a fitness franchise owner, your services are all about helping your customers reach their health and wellness goals. It's important to have a range of programs and classes that cater to different fitness levels and interests. Just like a well-rounded workout routine, your mix of services should include a variety of options

to keep your customers engaged and motivated. Next, we can't forget about pricing. Just like finding the right balance of cardio and strength training, it's important to find the right price point for your customers. Offering different membership options or packages can help you appeal to a wider range of customers and make sure that you're meeting their budgetary needs.

Let's talk about messaging and calls to action. You can have the best fitness programs in the world, but if nobody knows about them or how to get started, you won't see the results you want. Your messaging should encompass your brand and speak to your target market. CTA’s should be actionable, clear and consistent across all the channels you utilize.

Social media to direct mail to in-person events, it's important to use a mix of different channels to promote your franchise and connect with your target audience. Direct mail is an extremely effective way to build brand awareness and create a more personal connection. One way to utilize this channel is to create targeted mailings that offer special promotions or discounts to new customers. You can also use direct mail to promote upcoming events or classes, or to send out a newsletter that highlights the latest fitness trends and tips. Even messages from your personal trainers can motivate people to seek out their classes and expertise. Each piece of mail can be personalized to the recipient, from their name to the coupon code!

But like any marketing

118 MAY 2023 | WWW.FRANCHISEJOURNAL.COM
HEALTH & FITNESS EDITION

tactic, direct mail should be used strategically and in conjunction with other channels. By combining direct mail with digital marketing efforts like email and social media, you can create a cohesive and effective

marketing campaign that reaches your target audience on multiple fronts. Overall, these approaches are a great start to get you set up and in front of the right audience that will take action. With all of them working

together, you get one good recipe for success.

130 clients from a target market of 30,000. When looking at more densely populated cities, there is plenty of opportunity. This is also why multi-unit is such a popular move for Alloy’s semi-absentee developers.

individuals are investing in themselves and one another, it’s easy to see why customers tend to stick around.

For Alloy Personal Training, a fitness concept that offers full-body, non-modalitybased workouts to a “premium” age group, there are several key differentiators that set it apart from the rest. From their average customer age bracket having over 70% of the nation’s disposable income, to the over 96% retention rate for monthly memberships, Alloy’s stats are noteworthy; Their strength is truly shown in numbers. One of these numbers is the 130-member capacity. There are a number of reasons for this, but the biggest is keeping things personal. Bigger is not always better. Really getting to know the consumers, providing the highest quality of service, and pouring into the community that has been created is of the utmost importance. This allows Alloy to do so. This also results in scarcity. Alloy is looking to serve

Another noteworthy number for Alloy is their $308 average monthly membership fee. When diving deeper into the Alloy opportunity, most are pleasantly surprised to hear about the ability to tier the pricing by market. This allows franchisees to adjust accordingly to fit their market.

Alloy’s 96% retention rate is well above the industry standard and a key differentiator in their model. With Alloy creating an intimate, tight-knit community where

Alloy’s competitive advantage among other fitness concepts is that it is not modality based. Modalities (e.g. yoga, cycling, pilates, HIIT, etc.) can be hot until they are not. By not being modality-based, Alloy can adapt as training and the science behind it progresses. Clay Allen, the Director of Franchise Development, explains, “Alloy can easily adopt or drop training modalities as they come in and out of fashion. This allows us to be dynamic with not only our programming

but also our growth!” Alloy’s distinct application of personal training in a small group format allows them to meet the clientele where they are, based on their unique strength level, restrictions, and goals. As a result, clients receive programming tailored to them without having to pay a 1:1 premium.

“We often get this concern from candidates, ‘I don’t have a fitness background…’ This is not a prerequisite! We have franchisees ranging from former gym owners to IT professionals and lobbyists. Your ability to hire and lead great people is the key to success!” –

The Alloy Personal Training franchise was founded in 2019, however, the brand itself has over 30 years of experience

in the fitness industry. Alloy’s founder, Rick Mayo, launched the first personal training gym in 1992. By 2019, Mayo had licensed programs to 2,300 gyms globally and launched the Alloy Personal Training franchise shortly after.
