Explore what it means to be digital citizens and create a charter of digital rights and responsibilities.

LEARNING OUTCOME

1.6 Create a charter of online rights and responsibilities for the class. CHAPTER OVERVIEW Digital is defined as taking place online. Citizenship refers to a person who belongs to a community or county who are free to create their own rules. Every online community has a set of rights and responsibilities attached to them. A right is a legal entitlement to do something. Responsibility is a way that you should act in different situations. Digital citizenship includes having rights and responsibilities when using the internet and digital technologies. Digital rights are freedoms that we have when we access the internet and digital responsibilities are duties about the way we behave SAMPLE online. Everyone who uses the internet is part of a digital community and we should all look out for each other online. There are many types of responsibilities and rights when it comes to digital citizenship and sometimes these conflict with each other. In order to be active digital citizens, it is important for teenagers to understand why rules are made and how they are enforced online.

ACTIVITY 1: BRAINSTORM Students will think of three rights teachers have and three rights students have.

Students will Think of three responsibilities teachers have and three responsibilities students have.

ACTIVITY 2: TABLES In Microsoft Word, students will create a table with two columns and five rows. Title one column (Digital rights) and the other (Digital responsibilities). SAMPLE

ACTIVITY 3: THINK-PAIRSHARE Students will brainstorm alone, then in groups, any more digital rights and responsibilities that they can think of?

In pairs, students can create a list of rules that everyone should follow to make the internet safe. (They could use PowerPoint, Microsoft Word or Adobe Spark).

ACTIVITY 4: TERMS AND CONDITIONS CASE STUDY Reading and understanding terms of service that many social media platforms have may shock some teenagers. Applying these terms of service to a media form that includes teachers and parents might allow students to reflect on their use of social media platforms. SAMPLE

ACTIVITY 5: CHARTER Students will create a charter of online rights and responsibilities for the school website that we discussed in Activity 4. Make sure to include the school’s rights and responsibilities and the user’s rights and responsibilities. You can take examples from Instagram’s terms and agreements and from Activity 2. Complete the assignment using Adobe Spark.
