HELPING TO FIGHT HUNGER WORLD-WIDE

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR KIDS AGAINST HUNGER BAY AREA By Traci Wyss

It’s hard to imagine anything more excruciating than watching your own child die of malnutrition. Sadly, this is the reality for the parents of ten children every minute, every hour of the day across the globe. Additionally, 840 million people around the world are severely undernourished, 153 million of those are children under the age of 5. These heartbreaking statistics illustrate a truth we cannot ignore: the need for safe, accessible food is not seasonal. It is a year-round necessity for survival. The good news is that our ability to reduce this number and save lives is within reach. Kids Against Hunger Bay Area, a Pleasanton-based satellite of the national A Kids Against Hunger Bay Area event uses an assembly-line Kids Against Hunger style efficiency to swiftly package meal kits. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is working to eradicate hunger deaths worldwide while empowering kids, teens, and adults alike to make a difference in the world. As one of roughly four dozen satellite locations across the U.S. and Canada, the Pleasanton site alone packages an astounding 3.5 million meals each year thanks to volunteers from local schools, businesses, churches, and families. The group was started with the founder’s personal exposure to childhood hunger throughout his volunteering in Honduras after a hurricane, where he witnessed the suffering of starving children. The name “Kids Against Hunger” was adopted to emphasize the mission of feeding children, particularly in response to the need for child-focused hunger relief efforts. Unlike local food banks and kitchens, which collect food and redistribute or serve meals onsite, Kids Against Hunger’s model brings in volunteers to manufacture shelf-stable survival meal kits from bulk raw ingredients stored in their warehouse. Volunteers act as members of a manufacturing team, creating meals that are then shipped throughout the world to save lives. Each meal contains rice, soy, dehydrated vegetables, and a special vitamin and mineral flavoring mixture. The meals are gluten-free and vegetarian. On their own, the meals are a complete source of nutrition (they have as much
