Dear Readers and Supporters, Towards the end of the second quarter and things are hotting up! All over Spain!

It is not only the weather that is getting hotter, our visitors are increasing - in fact in Nerja for the Easter week the Municipal Tourism Bureau registered that hotel bookings made a total of 2,195, slightly higher than Easter last year.

The majority were Spanish tourists (908), and then British (390) followed

by Germans (211). Although the increase has given hope again that this year will be better for us all, we may still need to be cautious and look to change our business plans to make sure our business offerings can entice Spanish visitors We welcome yet more new advertisers and supporters, and recognise the loyal ones who are still with us from the first edition - that means we are nearly one whole year old!!

The Mediterranean climate that we all enjoy makes having a roof patio a desirable addition to your home, providing access to morning or afternoon sun and the surrounding views that are not obtainable at ground level.

Roof patios need to be constructed using a robust building approach similar to that of a flat roof. The extreme heat that is absorbed by the roof patio results in the surface expanding and contracting. Standard grouting will not bear up to such harsh conditions.

If prepared incorrectly, the grouting can have a tendancy to allow water to seep through which can result in the ceiling under the roof collapsing.

To guard against this, we apply a specialist sealant (as seen in the picture here) which allows the roof to expand and contract whilst retaining its waterproof state. We apply up to 4 layers in order to best protect the surface and ultimately your home beneath it.

With Absolut Vodka constantly developing new combinations of taste to tempt your palate.

One of the latest is the Orient Apple with apple and ginger overtones.

We thought you should be able to do more than a a bottle of tonic or lemonade to your vodka. So here is our variation on a true classic.

You will need per guest: A chilled Martini glass.

Cocktail shaker Ice cubes 60 ml Absolut Orient Apple Vodka.

20 ml Fresh Lime Juice 60 ml Cranberry Juice. Place every thing but the 20 ml Apple Liqueur fresh ginger into the shaker, Fresh Ginger. give it a good shake, until cold to the touch.

Strain into your pre-chilled glass, float some fine slivers of fresh ginger on the cocktail. Enjoy !

What’s the best way to handle this?

Start by blessing your current position with love and realize it’s only a stepping stone on life’s journey. Are people not treating you the way you would like to be treated… start by looking at a pattern in your consciousness that’s attracting that behaviour. Remember what we give out is what we get back! Look around and start blessing your workplace and colleagues with love instead of being stuck in negative thinking and criticizing everyone and everything.

Start to use the affirmations such as “I have a harmonious relationship with my boss and co-workers” or “Everyone appreciates what I do” If you like your job but don’t feel like you’re getting paid enough then bless your current salary with love. Expressing gratitude is important and enables us to grow and allow for changes to happen. It’s important to do your best on a job and use affirmations that you deserve a salary increase then the Universe will lift you out to the next and better place. If you hate your job and move jobs and stuck in this negative thinking then you will probably feel the same in the next job and so on…. change your thinking to attract a job you love working with great people.

Your thinking and consciousness puts you where you are so start thinking that you deserve a better job, work with great colleagues and have a salary increase and wait for the unfolding. The Universe will respond to thoughts you have so why not try some of these affirmations and don’t forget to be patient and keep doing them as changes don’t happen overnight!!

Yin and Yang Foods Let’s have a quick look at yin and yang foods.

The Chinese believe that to achieve bodily harmony, you must balance your intake of yin (cool, bland) foods with yang (the rich and hot). The Chinese classify ailments as yin (cold) or yang (hot) and believe that as the body ages, it becomes increasingly yin. Such yin diseases as anemia are treated with yang foods, and assorted yang infections (sore throats, measles, etc.) with yin foods.

They believe that failure to maintain energetic balance is the root to many illnesses: excessive yin leads to weakness and excessive yang to restlessness manifested in inflammation and ulcers. Yin food includes fruits and vegetables whilst yang food includes meat.

Apparently not all Chinese agree totally on which foods are yin or yang, but as a general rule, they break down as follows: Vegetable or Animal: With the exception of seaweed, all fruits and vegetables are yin foods. Fish, meat, eggs, and nearly all other animal foods are yang.

Sweet or Salty: The sweeter the food is, the more yin energy it holds. Sugars and tropical fruits like banana and mango are good examples of very yin foods. Saltiness is a yang characteristic. Any form of salt, caviar, and aged salty cheeses are very yang foods.

Cool or Hot: Fruits and vegetables are cooling to the body, and turn down the internal thermostat. Animal foods, with their concentrated protein, are heating to the body and are very yang.

In summer, the most yang time of year, we want to balance the hot energy with light, watery, lightly cooked and raw foods. We eat more salads, fruit, and cool foods, and select moderate foods like fish over the intensely yang foods which we eat more of in winter.

As the season changes to cooler and then cold weather, the ovens come on; we prepare soups (which can have both yin and yang energies), stews and roasts, these are from the yang end of the spectrum, thus ensuring that we’ll stay warm.

Quick or Long Cooking: Light sautéing, rapid stir-fry and steaming are all yin cooking methods. The end result is food that is still crisp and intact. Baking, stewing, roasting and braising are yang cooking methods. These foods are concentrated, and tend to have merging flavors and textures.

As I said at the beginning of this article this is only the tip of the iceberg on this fascinating subject, Chinese philosophy as well as yin and yang foods can be very beneficial to your health so it may be worth finding out more. HERB OF THE MONTH CHIA SEEDS (Salvia Hispanica) Chia played major roles of importance in the Aztec, Mayan, and Inca cultures; even traded as currency. Often warriors would carry chia seeds, and consume as little as a spoonful, and run all day.

Chia seeds typically contain approx. 20% protein, 34% beneficial oil, 25% dietary fibre, and significant levels of antioxidants and Omega 3 and 6. It is a complete protein source, with all the essential amino acids (19 amino acids total) in appropriate balance. Chia is also an excellent food source of high fibre, which helps lower cholesterol and manages diabetes.

They promote regeneration of muscles and tissues that have been damaged. Chia’s essential fatty acids boost metabolism and given its being an optimal source of protein and balanced amino acids, build and maintain lean muscle mass.

The taste of Chia is very mild. You can take chia seeds raw by themselves, or sprinkle them on salads, soups, cereal, yogurt, etc. When Chia seeds come in contact with liquid, they start to turn into gel. This gel is a great thickener for sauces; you can add it into juices, smoothies or shakes. Or you use a spoonful of this gel for satting, in the moments you fight against hunger feelings.

The seeds are packed with protein, complex carbohydrates (good carbs), essential fats, various vitamins like B vitamins and minerals like calcium, copper, zinc, etc. They are high in antioxidants which strengthen the immune system and keep you disease-free. Why Competa?

Another beautiful whitewashed Andalusian village featuring in our series of Why Spain? Cómpeta - known as the “Pearl” of Axarquía offers much to discover.

Reached to by the mountain roads starting from the autovia via Torrox, Algarrobo or Arenas. Just 18km from the beaches -it is surrounded by the stunning Tejeda and Almijara Mountains and views down to the sea. With many winding small uneven streets and a beautiful and unique golden domed 16th Century church at the Plaza Almijara - just for the architecture and position it is worth the trip.

Its population is nearly 4k and the occupants are made up of many different Nationalities.

Like many of the villages in this area, it has its own specific fiestas and cultures - the official fiesta is 3rd May, Day of the Cross (Dia de la Cruz). For many years on this day people take crosses covered with flowers from the Plaza del Carmen up to Cruz Del Monte, which is just above the village.

Throughout the year you can enjoy food and very special local wines made from the Muscatel grape (both sweet and dry). One of the more popular events is in the middle of August - the Noche Del Vino (Night of the Wine!).

There are many restaurants and bars offering both local and International food and tapas, shops selling local crafts such as ceramics, the Balcon de Cómpeta hotel, and the Wine Museum. recipe BY tINA Fish Pie Potatoes Butter Flour Salt and Pepper Onions Garlic

Fish Salt White Fish Crab Sticks Fish Stock 1/2pt Grated Cheese

Boil potatoes in salted water, mash with butter and set aside.

DIFFICULTY: HARD

Fry sliced onions, chopped garlic in butter, add fish salt and chopped fish and crab sticks.

Fold in 1 tblsp flour, add fish stock.

Put all in casserole and cover with mashed potato. Sprinkle with grated cheese. Cook in over at 180 degrees for 30 minutes.

Serve with green vegetables.

MUSIC SCENE After Dark, are a 4 piece rock, R´n´B and blues band based in Torrox.

They have been together for 4 years and have the experience to produce a professional, entertaining sound and performance.

The band is most fortunate to have 3 singers and an exceptional up and coming talented, young lead guitarist in Hector Trzebuchowski. The drummer; Rog Vonderschmidt is a former member of The Mama Paula Blues Band. Ray Palmer; lead vocalist and bass guitarist is a former member of Men In Black. Rose Palmer, vocalist, adds the extra dimension a female voice gives to the band.

Between the band’s members 5 languages are spoken fluently. Which helps to communicate with the audience. Although all songs played are sung in English.

They have some of their own original material and also cover favourite classic rock and blues from the 60’s to present making sure that they can provide a great night of entertainment for any event.

They play music from artists such as The Stones, Beatles, Kinks, Hendrix, Clapton, Free, ZZ Tops, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Rory Gallagher, Pearl Jam, Pink Floyd, Razerlight, Imelda May, Kings of Leon and many more. Their set list contains over a hundred songs, making them a versatile act for any occasion.

Hi there everyone and welcome to the first edition of an informative music page in The Directory. I will be trying to work my way through the live music scene currently in the area and trust that I will be able to recommend places for you to visit and enjoy. I must say that, any dates etc given are made available to us some 3 or 4 weeks before and it is always worth checking with the Venue for the latest info.

One aspect that has become exceedingly popular has been the JamSession/Open Mike events, which give musicians a chance to play together and also for new and aspiring players and singers to try out in front of a live audience. Of the ones worth visiting, Racing Club Axarquia near Torrox Costa is one of the best where on a Saturday afternoon between 3 and 6, firstly an actual named outfit plays for a while and then throws the rest of the time over to jammers and volunteers. With all venues, if you want to play, ensure you bring your own kit as Musicians are very protective of their instruments.

On the Paseo in Torrox Costa on Tuesday nights from 8.30 to 11.30, Carl G holds his Jam session at Jimmy´s Bar which is a very friendly session, which has attracted many people of several styles and types. Carl is not only a great singer, but also a superb Cajon player and this adds a great dimension to the evening and to the singers performances.

On a Sunday Night at Los Amigos in Torrox Park, various Bands host the weekly Jam etc from 9 oclock with a range of such distinguished musicians as Alf Bowman, Mario Reid, Denis Green and Peter the bass Player etc . This hardcore of musical talent provide a really great opportunity for guests to show off their talents. It is also a chance to hear the various bands as well.

WHAT´S ON Back in February Sharon Swaisland and Aylene Reynolds ran the Torremolinos Half Marathon in aid of Footsteps 4 Oliver, a charity to raise money for a 3 year old boy to pay for him to have surgery that will enable him to walk as he has Cerebral Palsy.

They completed the run and managed to raise 740 euros. This has been sent to England and Olivers fund.

The latest news, is that fund raising has been good and the target of £65000 has been reached for the operation and expenses to cover the operation. A new fund raising activity has begun to try and get Oliver the funds for the Physio post operation.

Which will be long, painful and of course costly.

Rosemary and John have collected here in Spain a total near to 2,000 euros, mainly through the brilliant sponsored run, the Friends auction and activities and a very kind donation from The fellowship of Christ the King both in Puente don Manuel. Many of the shops and bars in the area also helped.

The Directory sponsored the T-Shirts that the ladies wore, made by Buzzit T-Shirts.
