28th February is Día de Andalucía?

28th February is Día de Andalucía, which is a public holiday across the whole region. Most shops, banks and services are closed and people tend to spend the day with families or attending one of the organised public events.

On 28th February 1980, the people of Andalucía voted in a referendum on the Statute of Autonomy of Andalucía. The autonomy of regions formed part of the 1978 Spanish constitution, which was written when Spain became a democracy again, following the death of Franco. A regional parliament, the Junta de Andalucía, was established, with its parliament in Seville and the eight provinces of Huelva, Cádiz, Seville, Jaén, Córdoba, Málaga, Granada and Almeria, make up the region.

Andalusia’s flag, which is widely displayed on the Día de Andalucía, consists of three equal horizontal bars. The top and lower stripes are dark green and the middle stripe is white. Andalusia’s coat of arms is at the centre of the flag and bears an image of the mythical Greek hero Heracles between two columns; the Pillars of Heracles. The pillars are also said to represent the rocks on either side of the Straits of Gibraltar.

A number of public events take place in and around Vélez-Málaga, the flag is flown on the Andalucía roundabout and there is traditional music and dancing in the town centre.

Andalusia has traditionally had a predominantly left-leaning political landscape, from the Republicans during the Civil War to the first elections of the Junta de Andalucía on 23 May 1982, when the socialist PSOE party won and had done so ever since, until December 2018, when despite winning the biggest percentage of the vote, they failed, for the first time in almost 40 years, to gain an overall majority. A right wing coalition formed of the Partido Popular (PP) and Ciudadanos (C’s) was voted in on 16 January and Juanma Moreno (PP) was sworn in as president of the Junta de Andalucía the following Friday. Juan Marín of Ciudadanos became his Vice President.

TIPS AND TRICKS TO PAINTING YOUR HOME After the whites, creams and beiges of the 90s, we’ve been progressing to the bolder colours which are now must-haves in any contemporary styled room. If you’re looking to update the look of your home, choosing the “right” colour from a minefield of paint colour charts can be challenging to say the least! Here are a few ideas and tips to get your creative juices flowing.

Bold, bright colour can completely rejuvenate a tired-looking room, so it might be time to be brave and choose something you’ve not have tried or even thought of before. This room, if it was painted in the neutral shades of yesteryear, finished off with a brown or beige blind, could look so bland - dare I say boring - by today’s standards

You don’t have to cover an entire room in colour for a new look. Choosing one area to highlight for an accent only is a clever way to showcase an expensive paint colour or wallpaper without breaking the bank – painting or papering one wall or chimney breast in a bold colour creates a great focal point and transforms the look of a room.

Colour doesn’t have to be bright to be beautiful. Deep, dark and rich is also very inviting and a highly effective way to add interest and depth of character without shocking the senses.

Which paint? The type of paint you choose is just as important as the colour. It can have a major effect on the character of your room and the mood you want to achieve so be careful to choose the right type.

Water-based The majority of wall paint is water-based, primarily because it’s easy to use thanks to being quick drying, low in toxicity and easy to clean up. But if the surface you’re painting has previously been coated with an oil-based product, be careful when switching to water-based paint as it may have trouble adhering. If this is the case in your home, wash the wall, then roughen it with smooth grit sandpaper before you paint.

Matte paint (pintura mate in Spanish) offers the least reflective finish. It has a highly velvety texture, effectively hiding any imperfections on walls and ceilings, while providing excellent depth of colour.

It’s generally the standard choice for walls.

Gloss paint (pintura satinada in Spanish) reflects light to bring out the colour and offers a little more durability than matte paint, making it ideal for painting doors and window frames. It’s also used in frequently used environments like kitchens and bathrooms, where easy clean-up without a very glossy finish is what you want.

Oil based You can use oil-based paint on almost any surface for a smooth, glossy and durable finish. It is often less popular than its water-based contemporaries because it emits strong, sometimes overwhelming fumes, and can’t be washed off with water so you’ll need solvents like turpentine (aguarras in Spanish) for cleaning brushes and other materials.

Lost for colour inspiration? If the colour charts are leaving you dumbfounded and the magazines and online images still haven’t come up trumps, why not turn to an online colour scheme generator like www.coolors. co? It comes up with a multitude of inventive colour combinations that you might never have thought of, all at the simple click of a button.

One last tip Don’t forget that the paint you choose is only as good as the quality of the tools you paint with. Although you might think that rollers and brushes are a good way to cut costs, using high-quality tools will help you achieve that professionally smooth, bristle-free look.

De Cotta Law - Co-Habitants rights. Do they exist?

In English law there is no such thing as a “common law marriage”. In fact, the situation for co-habiting couples is causing increasing concern as more than 35% of couples who live together and share property believe they have legal rights which in fact do not exist. This was revealed in a survey carried out by an English law firm recently.

A potential problem on separation is that a number of couples live together for many years in a property where the legal title is solely in the name of one of the couple. To prove you have any legal rights, or any right to any of the sale proceeds, can be very difficult and expensive. In terms of proving property rights, these would be governed by the laws of the country where the property is situated, ie Spain. This can mean that a jointly-owned property in Spain is to be divided as to 50/50 regardless of the contributions of each of the parties.

If you live together in a property where only one of the parties has legal ownership in the UK, you would need to rely on proving that there was a “common intention” to own jointly or a trust relationship. However, trusts are not recognised in Spain so you have to prove your contribution with physical evidence of payments to make any claim on the property.

Co-habitation agreements can be drawn up dealing with these issues, but it would be necessary to get detailed advice on how this can affect property rights. The worst thing would be to arrive in this situation without being aware of your rights and obligations, so prevention is always better than cure.

Where there are rights of occupation for children, the position is more straightforward.

LA VIÑUELA

With the same name as the reservoir which provides water for the Axarquía area, the village of La Viñuela calls itself ‘The Oasis of the Axarquía.’

It is a relatively modern village and grew from La Viña inn, which provided respite for travellers on the old Camino Real (royal road) from Vélez-Málaga to Granada.

The inn, which still serves as a restaurant, La Antigua Venta de la Viña, on the corner of Calle Granada and Calle Nueva, dates from the 16th Century. However, it wasn’t until 1764 that La Viñuela was officially recognised as a village and gained its first mayor, Don Juan Lucas Garcia del Rey. La Viñuela also comprises the smaller hamlet of Los Romanes, on the other side of the reservoir as well as los Gómez. In total the population is around 2,000 (according to 2016 National Statistics Office data) and the town hall says that around half the current population is foreign, with many Brits, Scandinavians and Germans choosing to call it home.

La Viñuela village itself is long, with windy roads and attractive plant pots adorning many of the buildings on the main Calle Pizarras and Calle Granada.

There are two fountains that are worth looking for; the aptly named Oasis de la Axarquía on Calle Pizarras and La Cañada de los Deseos (fountain of desires), on 34

Calle Granada, where you can make a wish by throwing a coin into the water. A detailed map with places to see and bars and restaurants can be obtained from the Town Hall on Calle Granada or on the website (www.lavinuela.es ). Other points of interest include the old mill and forge, the San José church, Virgin de las Angustias chapel and the old labourer’s house (Antugua vivienda de jornalero) to see some traditional architecture.

While the reservoir itself doesn’t belong to La Viñuela village, the town hall is responsible for the recreational area by the football pitch, which has barbeque areas. Check with the town hall as to when the barbeques can be used. It is typically between October and April, but this can vary depending on how dry the year has been. For something more typically Spanish, forget the spare ribs and barbeque sauce and try cooking paella on one of the stone barbeques.

Use leña (firewood) and you will never taste paella quite like it!

There are all sorts of outdoor activities that can be enjoyed at the reservoir, including hiking, mountain biking, sailing, windsurfing and fishing. For further information on water sports, ask at the town hall or google water sports La Viñuela. It’s also a great place for dogs to cool off as the fresh water is better for them than sea water!

Los Romanes Standing tall above the reservoir at 465 metres above sea level is the small hamlet of Los Romanes, where approximately 400 people live. This tranquil setting provides some of the best views over the lake and surrounding area. It is also home to the Sociedad Santa Teresa de Jesús olive oil cooperative where oil can be bought as well as the museo de Verdiales, which pays tribute to the local dance and music tradition. There are also one or two hotels, restaurants and bars in and around Los Romanes.

and Los Romanes neighbours for the annual Romería (pilgrimage) which leads down to the reservoir. While the modern day event only goes back as far as 1991, it is said that in years of drought, locals would walk through the streets carrying an image of Saint Joseph (San José) to ask for rain.

In July los Gómez celebrates its annual feria to coincide with La Virgin del Carmen, while La Viñuela’s feria is held either over the last weekend of July or first weekend of August and Los Romanes celebrates to coincide with 15th August which is the day of La Virgin de la Asunción.

La Fiesta de la Pasa is a two-day event which takes place in midSeptember, to celebrate the annual grape harvest. Last year it took place on 21st and 22nd of September and involves music, dancing, gastronomy and an artisan market.

Services La Viñuela has a number of bars, restaurants and shops. There is also a health centre, post office, primary school, banks and small supermarkets. There are new play areas for children and exercise areas for adults. The adult education centre (Centro de educación de adultos) provides free Spanish classes three times a week as well as access to computers. There is also a helicopter pad just on the outskirts of the village, as you’re heading to the reservoir. Our guess is that it is used for tackling wild fires and also as an air ambulance service for people who get into difficulty in and around the reservoir. If anyone has a better suggestion, please let us know!

To get to La Viñuela take the A-7205 from the A-356 north from Vélez-Málaga.

Street parking is relatively easy and there is plenty of parking by the football pitch at the top pf the recreational area of La Viñuela reservoir. Los Romanes is on the other side of the reservoir and street parking is also relatively easy.

ONION BHAJIS Recipe from Richard Fox

RECIPE

I’m not sure I’ve ever met anyone who doesn’t love onion bhajis. Okay, granted, it doesn’t always come up in conversation - particularly on a first meeting. But somehow, you just know, and if William Hill were offering odds, you can bet they’d be so low it would hardly be worth the bother. It’s a shame then, especially when they’re absolutely bargain bucket cheap to make, not to have them in your culinary repertoire - ready to rustle up for top drawer, big match footie food for mates, or part of a fabulous Indian banquet for any big dining occasion.

In a restaurant situation they will almost always be deep fried. This is primarily for ease and speed. However it doesn’t mean to say that this method will yield the best result, especially if the oil has been used a few times. If you have a little deep fryer at home - with the safety element of a thermostat - then by all means go for it. But make sure you use new oil and fry at about 190 degrees centigrade. I now prefer a cross between shallow and deep frying, with the oil about a centimetre deep and turning half way through.

They’re an absolute winner, but be warned - onion bhajis in a restaurant may never seem quite as good again!

Makes 12-14 2 tsp cumin seeds 2 tsp coriander seeds 1 tsp mustard seeds, black or yellow 110g chickpea flour Juice of ½ lemon 1 birds eye green chilli, finely chopped ½ tsp turmeric 2 cloves garlic, crushed 1 large thumb of ginger, finely grated 2 onions, thinly sliced Heat a frying pan and add the cumin, coriander and 4-5 tbsp water mustard seeds. Dry fry for a minute or so or until the Small handful fresh coriander mustard seeds start to pop. Grind to a powder with a 1 tsp black pepper pestle and mortar, or in a spice grinder. Combine all the 1 tsp salt ingredients except the onions and oil to form a batter.

EVERYONE NEEDS A BIT OF POSITIVITY Bring Back That Loving Feeling It´s February, the month of love and Valentines Day so what better time to talk about relationships.

I meet with a lot of couples visiting me for Couples Reiki and what I mainly see is a lack of connection and communication. They may not of stopped loving each other but they have stopped really ‘seeing’ each other.

The excitement of any new relationship or love interest is just that, the ‘newness’, the discovery. As we spend years with our partner we often stop noticing them, we can stop seeing the beauty of the person we fell in love with.

The secret to regaining the magic is reconnection, seeing that person like you are seeing them for the first time. Remembering ‘why’ you fell in love with them in the first place, having compassion and empathy for your partner and remembering we are all different. We often get frustrated because people don’t do things our way, we get caught up in the daily grind and things annoy us, but does any of that really matter? Would our lives not be far more beautiful if we loved and cared for each other a bit more, if we were a bit more tolerant of the silly stuff. If we tried to see the person we fell in love with. Ask anyone who has lost someone they love, it’s the small stuff they miss the most. We need to notice what we have every day, right there in front of us.

This happens to so many of us in ‘happy’ relationships, we are there ticking along nicely but somewhere along the way we lose the connection without even realising it. I am lucky enough to of seen many couples reconnect and i know it’s possible to get the spark back.

These are a few obvious bits of advice (but they really do work) Make time for each other - go on a date night… on your own as a couple.

Turn off the telly and talk more talking to each other is so important.

Have at least one meal together every day at the table not in front of the telly.

Go to bed at the same time this isn’t about sex it’s about being with each other.

Make an effort to communicate better - tell your partner what is going on with you.

Hug each other and hold hands often physical contact is very important and often gets lost.

Listen, really listen to what your partner is saying give them your FULL attention Look each other in the eyes surprisingly a lot of couples don’t do this very often, if at all.

I’m not suggesting for a minute that you stay in a relationship that is not good for you, sometimes we simply can’t make things work and I’m a big believer that if you are unhappy then the kindest thing you can do for both of you is to leave and allow each other to find happiness. But if we do love the person we are with and want to stay with them, then anything we can do to make our partner feel heard and cared for will help more than you can imagine. Surely the aim of any relationship is to be there for each other, to help and guide each other, to help us become the best version of ourselves both individually and together.

Landscape photography is everywhere today and for good reason – the world is beautiful! However, because landscape photography is so popular, it can be difficult for your photographs to grab the eyes of your desired viewers. While there’s no way to predict exactly what image will stand out in the crowd, you can use these four techniques to give your photography the edge when it comes time to grab some eyes.

1. Define your vision As a photographer you are not only taking a photograph, you are sharing a vision – your vision. It’s important to remember this concept every time you’re capturing an image. This is important because if you are aware of why you’re attracted to a scene, and why you want to share it with others, the easier it will be for your viewers to connect with what you saw.

This does not mean that you must stick with the same definition of vision through every photograph you take. Instead, you should try to adapt and evolve your vision each time you go out to take photographs.

Letting your experiences influence the choices you make in your photography will allow your photography to express your individuality as a person.

2. Perspective It’s easy to see a beautiful landscape and take a photograph of what you see, but that is often not enough to grab the eye of your viewer. After you’ve defined your vision for a specific photograph it’s time to answer some questions about the

perspective you wish to convey.

Do you want to photograph from a low angle or from above the scene? Are you thinking of using a super wide-angle lens or would your scene be better suited for the compressed look of a telephoto?

3. Be purposeful in the choices you make If you’re going to overexpose a photograph, have a reason why. If you’re going to post-process an image using the HDR technique be sure do it because it makes sense, not because you want it to be HDR. Making purposeful decisions in your photography will make every photograph you take better.

In regard to post-production in general, be sure to use it as a tool to elevate your great photographs to the next level, and not to save your misfires from the trashcan.

Post-production is not what makes a photograph great, it can only enhance an already great photograph allowing it to stand out, above the crowd.

4. Subject matter, light, and the basics Finally, a boring landscape, shot in bad light, with the wrong techniques is not going to win any love from the peanut gallery so brush up on the basics first.

Learning how to photograph in the right lighting conditions, how to properly use a tripod, and how to achieve the perfect exposure of your scene will allow you to create more eye-catching photographs.

MOONSHINE Nerja was booming, full of holidaymakers from all over Europe. High summer: sun, sangria, sand, sea and sex. It was the height of the boom, fed by bankers, property agents and other respectable sober suited men and women, but mainly men. Just before the bust, when over-mortgaged American house owners brought about the collapse. Started the ball rolling downhill, allowing the same bankers to pay themselves high bonuses, to permit the taxpayers to save their institutions.

There were other less respectable con artists in town whose scam was simple, and often repeated in different locations with success. They were: Suzy Bright aka June Wilson and her partner Miranda. Suzy, mid fifties but still attractive, glamorous even, and Miranda, her plainer and efficient companion and secretary. Suzy was a born actor and Miranda the brains behind the swindle. The problem this time was that their resources were running low. Their capital was 150,000€, a good wardrobe and a necklace worth several thousand pounds inherited from Suzy’s mother. This, added to Miranda’s brains and Suzy’s talent, was the basis of their operations. Their money for working expenses however was running dangerously low, a quick kill was necessary.

They needed, and found, a good hotel in which to stay, that had a quiet bar with a barman whose English did not run beyond that needed to serve drinks. This Miranda found on her reconnaissance trip, the fact that they could not afford to stay there was irrelevant. They never paid hotel bills being experts in doing runners, the management unconcerned as they thought the pair had deposited a valuable necklace in the hotel safe, the jewellery box being found however to be empty after their departure.

Carlos was the ideal barman, quiet, efficient and competent at his job, but any request more than the ordering of a drink being met by “Qué?”

Their arrival was dramatic. “That’s Suzy Bright, you know, the ex-film star. What was she in now.... er was it Genevieve? Some British films then, Hollywood for a bit ... er Psycho? Some Hitchcock I think.”

The gossip was that she was looking to invest some capital into the flourishing local property boom. All rumours put about by Miranda.

The other pair on the lookout for gullible mugs was Adam Fairweather and his Spanish partner, Mario. Unlike the two women they ostensibly worked alone, supposedly with no connection between them. Suzy Bright’s arrival and investment plans became known to them within a day of her entering Nerja.

Two other facts need to be established. Miranda spoke Spanish and let it be known she did, whilst Adam also did but feigned not to. Adam and Mario knew the bar well, as they knew nearly every other likely bar in Nerja, which they had trawled during their two weeks in the town looking for a suitable mark.

The play went like this. Adam came into the bar where Suzy and Miranda were the only customers. He appeared to be in a foul temper that was obvious to see. He slapped a fist on the bar and rattled off a long sentence in English. “Qué?” from Carlos. More from Adam,

followed by more “Qué’s?” Miranda came over, “Can I help?” and then translated for him.

He joined them and they all chatted. It became apparent that Adam was a developer and that his client had pulled out, leaving a development hanging in mid air.

“I have 120,000€, in cash, in my flat. The developer Mario only deals in cash, typical Spaniard.

My client who was supplying the other 120,000 has just pulled out and Mario won’t wait. Ah well, I’ll just have to write it off to experience.”

Suzy quickly came to his rescue.

During the next two days it was arranged, over drinks in the bar. They both bought lockable briefcases from a shop nearby and each put 120,000€ in their own. Suzy, unbeknown to Adam, bought two more which she filled with newspaper. Adam in his turn bought two more which he also filled with paper. The shopkeeper had never sold so many bags before in so short a time. They deposited the two locked bags with Carlos, promising him a fine tip if he would hold them for a few hours.

Mario came, by arrangement, to agree to the deal. He, supposedly, didn’t speak English so Miranda translated. He produced plans, estimates and contracts. All were approved and signed. Carlos had put the bags in a cupboard behind the bar. He of course did not know what was in them or what the arrangements were, all that had been done in English before Mario arrived.

“Right,” announced Adam. “Now we’ll all go and see one of the sites, and then when we return, if we’re still agreed, Mario can take the cash and we’ll have dinner together when he’s gone.”

Mario then left to get his car for the journey to the site, and Adam said he would go outside with him, and ring his wife to tell her he’d be late home.

“We’ll go up and change,” said Suzy. “Ten minutes ok?”

The bar emptied.

Then things moved rapidly and to two different plans. When the women went upstairs, Adam and Mario retrieved the bags from Carlos and gave him the two filled with newspaper, then left in a hurry, drove out of the car park and didn’t stop until they reached Sevilla.

After a brief time, Suzy and Miranda returned and, seeing the two men still absent, also took two bags from Carlos and handed him theirs filled with paper. They also left quickly in a pre-ordered taxi with all their belongings and the briefcases, and were on the next flight to London.

That evening Carlos, who spoke English perfectly, sat in his room drinking brandy, counting the 240,000€. He had also bought two briefcases from the shop, more profit for the shopkeeper, and filled them with newspaper.

Those who sell moonshine sometimes get moonshine in return.
