TIME FOR PRIVACY FROM YOUR NEIGHBOURS THIS SUMMER Ready for some outdoor living now that the weather’s hotting up? Kicking back and entertaining on the patio is one the many great things we get to enjoy here in southern Spain. But if you’re not lucky enough to have a secluded villa, you might want to protect yourself from the gaze of everinquisitive neighbours; after all, even if you love your neighbours, privacy is important if you are to relax completely.

Have you considered any of these options to stave off peering eyes?

Fencing Possibly an obvious choice but bear in mind that if you are going to the expense of putting up a fence, it needs to do its job effectively. I say this because the more interesting and artistic looking your fence panel is, the more gaps it tends to have and the easier it is to see through even the tiniest of gaps.

Covering your fence with a creeper – ideally fast-growing – eventually helps the fence screen effectively. As it grows, you could hang plant pots from it to add privacy. Before you buy your fencing, you might want to check just how much you or your neighbours can see through it first. Simply hold up a panel 12

of the fence and try to look through it from different angles.

Plants and screening Adding privacy and/or beauty to your fence is easy if you opt for fastgrowing climbing plants. Relax to the wonderful aromas of jasmine or the even more fragrant dama de noche (lady of the night). Alternatively, passion flower, grape vines, bougainvillea (if you don’t mind sweeping leaves year round) or ivy are also firm favourites.

For an alternative to plants, you could add trellising to your existing fence or get some bamboo (bambú) or heather (brezo) screening, both of which are readily available in Spain. For the hardest wearing screening, heather tends to stand our scorching summer rays best.

Pots If you’ve been to Cordoba’s patio gardens or any other place in southern Spain, you will appreciate how gorgeous flower-festooned pots can be when hanging off patio walls. So why not add some to your patio at the same time as adding privacy?

If you’d like to hide a hole in the fence or attach your pots to the top of a low wall, you’ll be dazzled for choice at the local garden centres. From terracotta to man-made fibres or metal of all kinds, pots are a fun way to add privacy and doing so is within just about everyone’s capabilities. Make sure you choose plants that withstand the heat well – try succulents, cacti, lemon,

olive or fig trees, interspersed with colourful hibiscus, agapanthus and fragrant rosemary or lavender.

Awnings Stationary or retractable awnings are useful, especially if your privacy is compromised from above. They add character and intimacy to your living space and are available in a wide variety of styles, colours and materials.

For more traditional coverage, you might prefer a fixed, wooden pergola structure to which you can add your chosen awning or even a creeper for natural shade and privacy.

AXARQUIA SOLICITORS I WISH TO PURCHASE IN COSTA DEL SOL BEING A FOREIGNER. FREQUENT QUESTIONS AND DOUBTS II. In our first chapter we clarified the most common questions when a foreigner wishes to purchase a property in Spain. We know that purchasing a real estate property is not a difficult task, but it involves many other further legal and tax implications. We will try to clarify now the most common ones.

Is it recommendable to use a conveyance solicitor?

It is the buyer’s decision to use a solicitor or not, but there are many reasons to hire the professional services of a Spanish solicitor specialised in real estate law. The solicitor knows better than anybody the local laws and taxes so it is highly recommended to contact one because he will make the purchase process smooth, trouble free and 100 % secure.

What information do I have to get about the property before purchasing it?

Before buying a property in Spain, there are some basic checks and searches to be carried out: who is the legal owner; possible charges or mortgages on it; that there aren’t any debts regarding local taxes and utilities bills; etc.

The key point is to carry out searches in the local council and in the land registry to get updated information on the property and confirm that everything is correct and that it can be purchased without any problems. The solicitor is the right person to do these searches and confirm that the property is in good legal condition to be purchased.

In case the property belongs to an urbanization, it is essential that the community of owners confirms the property is up to date with the community rates. Otherwise, the buyer can be compelled to take over previous debts.

Which documents do I need to purchase a property in Spain?

Buying a property in Spain is simple. The only documents requested are an original and valid (that is, not expired) passport or identity card, to confirm the identity of the buyer; and a NIE number (Tax Identification number for Foreigner), which can be obtained in the police offices in Spain. It is a quite easy procedure.

Please, be also aware that in order to transfer the necessary funds to pay the purchase price, it is necessary to have a Spanish bank account. Most of Law offices have a “clients account” for this purpose, so the buyer who uses a solicitor will only need a personal bank account after completing the purchase.

Once the purchase is completed, do I have to do any further paperworks?

When the purchase has been completed in front of a Public Notary, it is necessary to pay the Transfer Taxes (8 % of the purchase price) within 30 days, and to take the title deeds to the land registry so the ownership is registered.

It is also necessary to change local taxes, water and electricity contracts, and community rates into the name of the buyer; as well as to order future payments by direct debit.

A solicitor will be able to arrange all these matters in a speedy way and without problems. Another good reason for hiring one when buying your property in Spain.

Mango growing is the in thing now round these parts – the river valley of Velez-Malaga, along with all the tributary rivers that crisscross through the countryside and join the main river valley, down to the sea, is perfect for tropical fruit growing. One thing I am increasingly being asked for is properties that can sustain an income other than letting out a casita or rooms in one’s house to tourism and mango production is a logical alternative opportunity.

Cortijo Jacaranda is the result of the hard work and sweat of the current owner, offering just that alternative. This lovely property is set in 12,000m2 of land, on a secluded, sunny hillside just a few minutes drive from the village of Triana. It is replete with beautiful young mango trees, swaying gently in the breeze, every dark, green leaf shining in the sunshine! And these lovely beauties (there are around 800 of them at the moment on this farm) are already producing around 6000 Kgs of ripe, juicy mangos each year, set to double as the trees grow and develop further.

Yes, mango production is hard, sometimes back-breaking work, but so is letting rooms in a house, but it is a wonderful alternative, a new skill to learn, and a great way of keeping fit, perfect for recently retired, but still fit ex-pats. It’s also the perfect way to get to know the locals and learn the language quickly, working with them and supplying the mangos to the local export depots.

CÚTAR The tiny village of Cútar really is right in the middle of the Axarquía. It’s around 330 metres above sea level and has approximately 600 inhabitants, many of whom live in the surrounding hamlets of Salto de Negro, La Zubia, Monte de los Frailes and El Molino. In the compact village itself, there are probably just about 300 and according to the people at the town hall, many of those are second home owners and foreigners who just come for winter.

There are two possible origins of the name Cútar: one is that it comes from the Arabic, Hisn Aqut, which means ‘strong castle’ and Cautzar, meaning ‘fountain of paradise. Whichever the true origin, Cútar has strong links with its Islamic past, not only with the discovery of the Koran but also through the Fiesta del Monfí, which take places over two days in October. The festival acts as a reminder of the village’s Moorish past and recreates the ‘Andalusi’ culture through a medieval market, selling traditional food and handicrafts.

Residents dress up in traditional costume and there is music, dancing and a tea ceremony.

One of the permanent residents is Cutareño (the name given to people from 34

Cútar), Miguel Lozano Ruíz, who along with his son, came across a 16 th Century Koran and Arabic manuscript hidden in straw and mud inside the wall of a house that the pair were reforming in 2003. We were joined by Miguel at the village’s one and only bar when we visited and he told us his story. While there are copies of the books in the village’s museum, Museo del Monfí (although this appears to be closed at the moment), the originals were sent to Malaga University to be analysed and translated.

which is a problem across much of Spain and has hit the news in recent weeks. He told us that the problem isn’t new and that during the last century, many of the men from the village went in search of work to Barcelona and would come back for the annual feria, in August.

As you enter the village on the road from Vélez-Málaga, you cannot miss the Fuente Arabe (Arabic fountain) on your left. There are steps leading up to a small tunnel and if you carry on you’ll get to the upper part of the road. It’s well worth the climb as the mirador at the top offers a stunning panorama, not only of the whole village but of the surrounding countryside and other nearby villages.

Other points of interest include the Virgen de la Encarnación church and the Algorfa Arabe, an old Arabic barn, which is just down the road from town hall and next to the bar. The views from the bar’s terrace and Algorfa Arabe of the hills surrounding Cútar are unmissable.

Cútar is highly dependent on agriculture and as well as Axarquía muscatel raisins, subtropical like avocados and mangoes have become a vital source of income for the village. Mayor, Francisco Javier Ruíz, also told us that rural tourism is something which is beginning to take off in the village and

that more and more visitors and second home owners are coming into the area.

There are plenty of hiking options around Cútar and thes include a 19 kilometre circuit starting and finishing in the village and taking in La Zubia and La Alqueria.

The Del Cerro trail is the easiest of the options and takes around 90 minutes, while the La Albaida trail is medium to difficult and takes around 2 hours 30 minutes to complete. Further information is available from the town hall near the entrance to Cútar.

Festivals Cútar celebrates its annual Romería de San Roque (pilgrimage) at the end of May, the Feria de Salto Negro takes place in early August and the Fiestas de San Roque, the village’s patron saint, take place over the weekend closest to 16 th August.

Then of course the aforementioned Fiesta del Monfí is in mid-October.

Services and getting there Despite its diminutive size, Cutar has a range of services including primary school, town hall, health centre, chemist’s and sports facilities. Market day is Thursday.

To get to Cútar from Vélez-Málaga, take the A-356 and then MA 3113 to Benamargosa and then the MA 3108 on which Cútar is signposted at the bridge over the river once in Benamargosa.

Water is a beautiful subject to photograph. It can be as dramatic as a waterfall, predictable as a fountain, vast like the ocean, or just a winding exciting river. Whatever the source, it can be a point of interest in your image or an element of your composition. Here are a few tips you can use to improve your images.

1. Capture Motion Firstly, think about what you want to convey and how to add that characteristic to the shot. This may be as simple as choosing the right shutter speed. A fast shutter speed freezes motion and works well for crashing waves to show the activity of an ocean. On the opposite side of fast shutter captures are long exposures. If you want to show greater motion or get that silken effect, slowing down your shutter speed gives you that cool effect. A few key things; aim for an exposure between 0.5 and 10 seconds which means that your camera needs to be still (a tripod is a definite, you can also use a shutter release cable/remote if possible).

2. Mirror Mirror Water is a natural mirror. Seek out reflections and classify them. Is the reflection enhancing your image or distracting from it? In the latter case, move around a bit to eliminate reflections where possible or return to your location when the sun is at a different angle.

A polarizing filter can help eliminate some of the reflections and give you nice contrast (rotate the filter and check out what’s possible). With reflections you can go for a symmetrical composition or not, depending on what you want to portray. You can even just shoot the water reflection and not the subject itself; the possibilities are endless. www.thedirectoryaxarquia.es

3. Filter it Using a polarizer was mentioned above, but it is worth a second thought as it is quite a useful tool to have in the field when photographing water. In addition to removing reflections (when they’re not wanted), a polarizer is very helpful in cutting out glare. By eliminating glare, it helps bring out any colour details of the water and what lies below the surface.

4. Underexpose when photographing water Perfect exposure in-camera is your ideal goal. When water is your subject though, too many highlights can make it look white and it is difficult to recover the details in large areas that are blown out or clipped. If water is the dominant subject in your frame, it will benefit you to underexpose by 1/3 to 1/2 a stop.

5. Get your feet wet If you can get into the water safely with your tripod, it’s a perspective worth trying. Use extra caution when setting up on slippery rocks and be aware of your surroundings.

Make sure your equipment is insured, and you’re all set to try something different.

If this is not an option for you, grab a zoom lens for some close-up details. It is worth the time to experiment with unusual angles.

Conclusion Water is indeed a fascinating subject and with so many ways to capture it, why not give it a try? Are you drawn to the dreamy motion of long exposures, or do you find yourself caught up in a reflection?

In Cordoba the competition began in 1953, but the tradition is said to date back to the 18th century. The preparations took place secretly, traditionally with all the women and children from each street or neighbourhood joining in. Legend that in the past it also served as an excuse for young single people to meet.

The tradition is also popular in Vélez-Málaga and this year the festival will take place from 27 April until 3 May. The event coincides with the anniversary of the Catholic Kings, Isabel and Ferdinand, capturing the town during the Spanish Reconquista, on 3 May 1487, during ‘La Toma de VélezMálaga’ (the siege of VélezMálaga).

Vélez also holds a competition for the best decorated cross and anyone can go to see them during the festival period. Every year, between the end of April and beginning of May, many towns and cities in Spain celebrate the May Crosses festival, or Las Cruces de Mayo. In Andalucía it’s particularly big in the city of Córdoba and precedes the Fiesta de los Patios, when residents decorate their patios with beautiful flowers and plants. The giant crosses are also similarly decorated and different Catholic brotherhoods and residents’ associations compete for the most elaborately decorated cross.

RECIPE

Okay folks, get ready to make cheese – in minutes. I know, it’s bonkers! This cheese is one hundred percent dairyfree. I suppose you may reasonably ask the question: what makes it cheese? Actually nothing – except; it looks like cheese, it has a texture of cheese and it flippin’ well tastes like cheese.

Given that the main ingredient – and the key to the texture, are cashew nuts, the outrageously straight forward preparation is nothing short of alchemy. Nutritional yeast (an absolute must-have in any vegan larder) adds the cheesy element; apple cider vinegar gives the piquancy while miso paste gives a depth and umami flavour to the whole thing. I also add some English mustard powder which provides a subtle Welsh rarebit vibe. It’s worth noting that homemade, plant-based cheese bears little or no resemblance to the RECIPE shop-bought versions. Put all the ingredients except the chives in a high-powered blender or food processor. Blend at full power for about thirty seconds. Scrape the contents from the side and blend for another thirty seconds. Repeat this process three or four times until you have a smooth consistency.

Line a food ring or small bowl (about 10 cm diameter x 3 cm deep) with a disc of grease-proof paper. Fill with the cheese pressing down to make sure it’s well compacted. Cover and leave in the fridge for at least four hours to firm up.

SPRING FORWARD INTO HEALTH When hungry, eat.

It’s an ancient Zen saying. I like Zen, everything is nice and simple and well, sort of Zen. And this is how our relationship with food should be – a quiet, straightforward, drama free link between hunger and food. Eat the right quantity of the best quality food we can to fuel our bodies and minds - and then stop. Easy right?

Well, perhaps not. For quite a large percentage of us the subjects of hunger, food and weight are about as far from Zen as they could be.

The last statistics from the World Health Organisation show that 67% of Spanish adults and 64% UK adults are overweight, with an obesity rate of over 30%. It seems that the intuitive connection we are born with, the inner voice that balances our physical and mental needs, has somehow become corrupted. My clients tell me that eating well and managing their weight has become one of the most complicated, frustrating and even scary issues in their lives.

So, where do we look to solve this dilemma? To our plates? To the next new diet or yet another slimming club? Well, we know that 97% of dieters regain the weight they have lost ( and more ) within 2

years, so maybe it’s about more than just the food. Maybe it’s about examining not just what you eat, but the reasons why you are eating it. Do you know that there are 9 types of hunger, and only one is satiated by actually eating?
