I hope you have enjoyed the Christmas and New Year celebrations. Hopefully heads are not too sore as the celebrations are not over yet ... the Three Kings are yet to arrive.

The night of the 5th is a big celebration here in Spain with parades in all the towns and villages. Whether a big or small parade it is great fun for children and all to see the floats and of course get their years supply of boiled sweets!

Mind your heads, eyes and anything else that might hurt when a handful of sweets are hurled at you. You will see children with carrier bags full of sweets and young and old scuffle on the ground to sweep up the sweets that have not been caught.

The appearance of walling is often the last thing to be considered when building a wall, with cost being the primary decision driver. I n purchasing an existing home, owners can sometimes inherit unsightly or rather plain looking walls. Dressing a wall can greatly improve its appearance at a reasonable cost. Walls can be dressed in a variety of different stone cladding or false brickwork.

Stone cladding is dressed to shape, with particular attention paid to the spacing between the stones (as too wide a gap will look unsightly). The stones are set in place using special adhesives, as cement alone with not be strong enough. The grouting can be coloured to add to the effect.

Too often walls here in Spain are simply rendered and painted white - whilst this is fine - why not consider giving your garden walls a unique look that will separate them from the rest?

THIS MONTHS COCKTAIL New York Sour Hope you all had a fantastic time over Christmas and the New Year celebrations.

This month we are kicking off the start of 2015 with the New York Sour. It’s a quick and easy cocktail and also helps you use up those left overs.

60ml Bourbon Whisky 25ml Simple syrup Lemon garnish.

30ml Lemon juice Red wine

Place the Bourbon, lemon juice and simple syrup in the cocktail shaker with some ice and shake until nice and cold.

Pour the ingredients into a Collins glass with some crushed ice.

Carefully pour the red wine over the back of a spoon as to float on top of the drink. Finish off with a lemon wedge or a twist. You can also place an egg white into the cocktail shaker to give the drink a bit more edge. (this is optional) Enjoy your cocktail and drink responsibly.

Detox Strategies for 2015 As we welcome 2015 start listening to what our bodies are really asking for: real rest, real fun, and real food. Welcome in true healing, real nourishment, and balanced energy for the New Year: Play more, work less: If working out at the gym stresses you you’ll get more benefit and enjoy your life a lot more if you move in ways that are fun for you. Stress puts you in the metabolic state to keep weight on, while playful fun energizes you while you sweat out toxins. Go play Frisbee, take your mates for a hike and picnic or dance. Movement that is fun and laugh-inducing is good for you and you’ll do it more often and get those endorphins going. Get out and have fun — you’ll find your body and hormones responding!

Sleep: Sleep is the foundation upon which your entire life is either built sturdily, or crumbles and falls apart. Logging 7-9 hours of quality sleep, every night, is necessary for your body to balance hormones, which affect your mood, metabolism and insulin sensitivity. Your brain also detoxes while you sleep.

Watch your thoughts: 40% of our thoughts are habit. We think the same things over and over again, and most of them, especially when it comes to our bodies, our abilities, and ourselves are not nice. It’s normal — humans have a “negativity bias” built into our brains. This means your brain, left to its own devices, will default to the negative, to try to protect you from mistakes. However, this constant focus on the negative can put us into a stress state, keeps you going back for comfort foods to relieve some of the stress, and don’t make you feel worthy of the amazing, energized, healthy life that’s waiting for you when you are kind to yourself.

Remove the “Toxic Six.” : It’s important to look at what you’re eating and remove foods to which you are intolerant of or sensitive to. There are six common foods that most people suffering from weight-loss resistance, hormonal imbalance, or mood imbalances are sensitive to: gluten, dairy, soy, corn or maize, sugar (including alcohol and artificial sweeteners), and caffeine. Removing these six foods for at least two weeks will allow your hormones to balance, leading to easy, natural weight loss and balanced moods and energy. Avoid these foods for two weeks, and then reintroduce them, one at a time for 4 days, to help you understand how each foods affects your energy, digestion, skin, and mood.

Quaintly Spanish RECIPE BY TINA Hi, I’m Liz, writer and microbrewer!

A friend of mine called the Spanish help-desk for her hoover and they hung up on her. She was so disappointed, as she’d practiced in advance, written down all the stuff she wanted to say, but she never got there. When she asked whether the lady on the phone spoke English (and my friend is a lovely, polite person) she got a gruff ‘we’re in Spain, learn Spanish’ reply. Though we both agreed the lady had a point, we ALL should work on our Spanish, it wasn’t very helpful. But my friend soldiered on and produced her much-practiced sentence, something like ‘could you please tell me about the warranty on my vacuum sucking machinery, kind madam?’. Whereupon the gruff lady just mumbled ‘no comprendo’ and hung up. I felt my friend’s pain. She’d tried so hard. Too hard perhaps. Speaking on the phone takes practice. My Spanish is okay, but speaking on the phone about something complex such as a three year warranty on the plastic pointy bit of your hoover, it’s always going to be tricky. I suppose I was “lucky”, as the first summer we came here our electricity often went out. For up to 12 hours a day. And I’d call.

And call. And call. Oh, and cry, occasionally.

Most of all, I learned to keep it simple. ‘No electricity. Again!’ is better than ‘dear sir, if you please, the machines in my house have all ceased activity.’ What really helps?

Smile. They can tell. And if all else fails get your neighbour to call and buy them a drink as a thank you. At least I got to know all my neighbours!

Oriental Chicken or Salmon Chicken breasts or thighs, skin removed or slices of smoked Salmon cut into strips.

150ml Apple wine (Chinese or similar) 3 floz Soy sauce Water approx. 3 floz 1 heaped tsp. grated ginger 4 garlic cloves crushed 5 whole star anise.

1 tsp. Sesame oil or roasted seeds and olive oil.

Chinese 5 spice mix Mix above together and cook in pan gently.

Add a few onions finely chopped for a denser sauce.

Garnish Red chili, carrots, green beans finely sliced.

Rice Cook chicken in the pan, brown on both sides, then put in over to finish off.

Salmon flash fry in knobs of butter just before serving.

Garnish part cook to al dente (crunchy) in butter - carrots and beans. Do the chili separately at the end and garnish the chicken or salmon when placed on a bed of rice. Pour over sauce.

Your 30-day Success Challenge Welcome to the final part of this series and it comes with a challenge for you. So far we have explored some powerful tools to start being more successful:

And if you have done the previous little exercises you will already be on your success journey which is probably not where you were when we started.

Another important aspect of what you want is to understand ‘Why do I want that?’ What is your compelling reason for wanting what you want?

If you don’t have a compelling reason for wanting your success, you will fail at the first tough challenge – or before even starting.

So, the first two practical steps towards starting to be more successful are: • Defining the right outcome using positive and specific language in the present

tense i.e. “I have…”, “I am…”, “I can (do something)…”

• Getting in touch with your ‘compelling reason’ for wanting this outcome.

This must come from within you and be something that creates a strong emotional sensation/reaction. Without these two steps, success may never arrive in your life.

To finish I want to issue a challenge to you.

Exercise – your 30 day success challenge 1.

Think of something you would like to achieve at the end of the next 30

days (in the next month). Think BIG! 2.

Write it down in positive and specific words beginning with “I have” or “I

am” or “I can”.

3.

Now write down exactly, specifically why you want that outcome. Make this

a compelling reason so you feel something when you think about it!

4.

Create your ‘VoS’. Live the success now!

5.

Now decide five small easy things you can do today that will start to take

you towards this outcome.

MUSIC SCENE Billy Preacher & Sons is a

Southern Spain based band of musicians centered around Willy Slagmolen a.k.a. Billy Preacher.

For some years now Billy has been writing songs and tunes and the aim is to record as many as possible of them, and also perform them for a live public.

There is a huge influence of roots music, especially early blues, early rock&roll, rockabilly, 60´s rock, 70´s funk as well as jazz and some latin.

The band´s current members are Willy Johnson, guitar, Pete Wallbridge, bass & vocals, Dani Cuenca, drums&vocals, for recordings also join in Dennis Gregor, piano & keyboard a, Javi Gonzalez, saxophone, Dani Calvo on harmonica.

Some of the other sons are Antonio Yuste, guitar, Alberto Soler, bass.

As all musicians have a long history in other bands the live act of Billy Preacher&Sons is a steady and sturdy machine of rock&roll and entertainment on stage.

In next few months there will be put in a lot of efford to record and distribute Billy Preacher & Sons first record, all songs will be previously released The DIRECTORY an easy to use, easy to find A-Z of businesses in your area and more!

THE AMERICAN INTERNATIONAL CLUB is a social club serving from Almunecar to Torrox with a philanthropic focus raising funds for spanish charties. Every year a significant donation is given to a local Spanish organization/s as a way of saying “thank you” to our host country.

FEBRUARY EXCURSION TO BARCELONA AND MONTSERRAT. Please come and join friends on a 4 day coach and train excursion in February starting on Monday 16th /17/18/and 19th. Staying at the 3* Hotel Gaudi, situated in the heart of the city, in front of which is the famous Antonio Gaudi masterpiece of the Güell Palace and only 100 meters from the Ramblas. The price is 395 Euros double room and 455 Euros single room. Non refundable deposit of 100 Euros and final payment by 15th January, tickets available at the Centre.
