Pound rockets on rumours Spain and the Netherlands want ‘soft Brexit’ Staying on top of the latest currency news can help you time your transfers more effectively, so find out what you should be looking out for over the next couple of weeks…

Latest currency news The pound started the New Year on rocky form, thanks to more unsettling political developments and mixed economic data. GBP/EUR slumped to lows of around €1.1210 on two occasions, but also managed to record highs of €1.1350.

Meanwhile, GBP/USD rose from a low of US$1.3461 to hit a post-referendum high of US$1.3809.

EUR/GBP trended between a low of £0.8810 and a high of £0.8920. EUR/USD, meanwhile, has recovered from a low of US$1.1918 to hit a more-than three-year-high of US$1.2288.

What’s been happening?

The pound started 2018 on solid form - even if UK data didn’t.

Markit’s UK manufacturing PMI, released on 2nd January, fell further-than-expected to 56.3, while the construction PMI published on the 3rd dropped to 52.2 instead of to the predicted 53.

Even the better-than-expected rise in the UK services PMI, released on 4th January, failed to particularly lift the pound, although by the first weekend of 2018 Sterling was closer to the week’s highs that its lows.

Last week saw UK politics firmly back in the spotlight. Theresa May reshuffled her Cabinet at the start of the week, but markets weren’t impressed by the lacklustre activity – with key people such as Boris Johnson somewhat controversially kept in place.

Overall, many commented that the lack of changes illustrated just how weak Theresa May’s position remains, raising questions over her ability to negotiate and implement a Brexit that favours the UK economy A slew of data on the 10th failed to overly strengthen the pound, although the figures were mostly positive; even the trade balance figures, which showed the deficit widened on the month, revealed a narrowing on the quarter and on the year.

GBP raced higher at the end of the week, however, thanks to suggestions Spain and the Netherlands were in favour of a ‘soft Brexit’ and were planning to lobby other EU nations to agree.

What do you need to look out for?

The most impactful data this week will be the December consumer price index figures released on Tuesday.

The data is expected to show that overall price growth slowed from 3.1% to 3%, while core price growth slowed from 2.7% to 2.6%.

Given that surging prices are hampering consumers’ ability to spend money, a slowdown in inflation may be welcomed by the markets.

Wednesday’s speech from Bank of England (BoE) official Michael Saunders could cause some turbulence, as he is one of most hawkish members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) and so may offer markets a reason to be upbeat about the interest rate outlook.

Returning to the importance of consumption for the UK economy, Friday’s December retail sales figures could weaken the pound, considering a large decline is predicted month-on-month.

Tuesday 23rd will bring the latest round of government borrowing figures and industry data from the Confederation of British Industry (CBI).

Wednesday’s average earnings figures could give the pound boost if they show an acceleration in pay growth, especially if tomorrow’s inflation data does slow as expected, as both these things combined will help improve the outlook for consumer spending.

Next week ends with the release of the UK’s fourthquarter GDP figures, giving markets a chance to reflect upon the impact of Brexit in the first full calendar year since the referendum.

“Make work your imagination”, says Brahim Elaabdouli to Lucas, 12, and Maj, 9, gathering around the worn wooden table for a cup of tea in our Nomad tent together with me during the first day in our desert camp in southern Morocco.

I record my childrens questions and curiosity about what is to come in the next two months. Brahim is our Berber history expert and desert guide. “How do the Nomad’s survive in the desert even in a sandstorm”, Lucas asks? “Will I see the camel babies”, Maj asks with a big smile.

Brahim and I make the promise to facilitate all this knowledge.

“Remember, that you are not in a school building now, but out here to be educated for life”, Brahim responds.

“Your school is here every day, each minute, it surrounds you and invites you to become a family member”, he continues.

In the next two months, the Tanmirt Expedition will “Ki Krak” (which from Berber translates to give and to receive), share knowledge and kickstart enterprises here together with the 16

Nomads. In return, we will be repaid with ancient wisdom of humanity and amazing stories from the desert region.

Our Friday fun, on this first week, we ate a traditional couscous meal with our friends in Tagounite, all eight of us around the table. Maj and me enjoyed the village hamam with our Moroccan sisters and the time to simply be together. Before bed, we sat around the fire in our desert camp and watched the stars light up in the sky one by one and my daughter said: “Please Brahim, tell us the story of the hedgehog and the fox”.

HOME RE-STYLING WITHOUT THE DESIGNER PRICE TAG With three more months of winter chill ahead of us, February is a great time to stay home and take a look at our home interiors. Getting to grips with a few simple makeover techniques can make cosy time indoors so satisfying.

The good news is you don’t really need to call in the interior designers. There are countless ingenious things you can do to improve your home, even on a budget.

Here are some of my favourites:

Chalk painting This is all the rage at the moment. I met one woman on a chalk painting course recently who was actually planning to paint the entire contents of her house white!

Although this might be a little extreme, there are endless possibilities for updating old, tired-looking furniture with a simple lick of paint. Indeed, once you start, you may not know when to stop!

Chalk paint (pintura a la tiza) is easy to find in Spanish hardware and paint stores.

If you can’t find the Annie Sloane brand – often considered to be the crème de la crème in the world of chalk paint – any other will do; like Xylazel for example.

The beauty of chalk paint is you can apply it straight onto any surface without the need for dreaded sanding. The finish is, as you might expect, lusciously chalky for the perfect vintage look. Choose from a range of colours, remembering to stick to light colours if your living space is rather dark. Finish off by gently rubbing in some wax (buy it with your chalk paint) or water-based transparent varnish for a more durable finish.

No job is too big. If you’ve had enough of a dated kitchen or wardrobes taking over the room, chalk-painting is a lovely, cost-effective way to update them.

Up-cycling upholstery Your old sofa, dining or armchairs might have had a lot of use lately, particularly over Christmas. If you’re dreaming of replacing them, you might want to consider getting them re-upholstered instead.

Seek out a local upholsterer (tapicero) and you could find that prices are very reasonable; definitely, compared with buying new. And the best thing is you’ll get 18

a bespoke, personalised result in exactly your choice of fabric.

You might want to use fabric you already own. Alternatively, choose from the huge variety of gorgeous, inexpensive options at your local weekly market (mercadillo).

You could even tie it all in with new curtains and cushions which, if you have an aversion to sewing machines, the upholsterer could also make for you.

Short of things to re-upholster or paint? In Spain it’s quite easy to find furniture, be it tables, chairs, sofas, headboards or shelves simply dumped by roadside bins ready for the council to collect. This could be a great opportunity to salvage something for your next upcycling project, ready to transform into a beautiful piece.

I once had a chance encounter with a top quality, feather-cushioned sofa while walking the dog by the river near my home. It now sits proudly in the living room covered in exquisite Andrew Martin fabric. Aside from the thrill of a free find, there’s something so satisfying about owning a piece of furniture with a story; one you’ve salvaged and personally had restored to its former glory.

De-cluttering Does the very idea fill you with dread? It should not. I guarantee that you will feel lighter and freer once you have finally boxed up your clutter or even…yes…thrown it away!

Visually, just a few well-chosen items on a shelf are far more attractive than a pile-up of unused belongings. The same goes for rooms crammed with too much furniture. Put things you still can’t bear to throw away neatly in a box and out of view, preferably inside a cupboard. You can then switch things over when you do your next makeover. A de-cluttered home is also easier to keep clean and injects a fresh, designer look which makes you feel calm.

De-cluttering can extend to your patio, terrace or balcony too. A collection of potted plants might have accumulated on the floor, gathering pockets of leaves and dirt which are difficult to sweep clean. Put up shelves – pallet shelves are very popular at the moment – or add a free standing unit and arrange your pot plants on it.

Not only does wall-mounted shelving help keep things clean, it frees up valuable floor space for your lovely piece of newly-painted, up-cycled furniture – don’t add too much though, or you’ll be soon be de-cluttering all over again!

Inheritance Tax Reductions - Andalucia This year 2018 brings good news for family members who inherit property and assets in Andalucía. The regional tax has been reduced, with spouses, children, parents and those registered as partners - parejas de hecho - receiving an increased tax allowance of 1,000,000€ per beneficiary.

Spanish inheritance tax is a donee tax falling on the person who receives. This means that if you and your spouse are joint owners of a property whose tax value is just under 2,000,000€ and you receive one half, you would not pay succession tax in Spain.

Unlike previous deductions, this new allowance applies even if the beneficiary receives more than the amount of the allowance. It acts therefore in the same way as the nil rate band in the UK. So if you inherit 1,100,000€, you deduct 1,000,000€ and only pay tax on the 100,000€.

At present this applies to all European Union residents which currently includes the UK. It is going to be important to know if these allowances will remain post Brexit. Many lawyers and accountants fear this will not be the case.

This is because the way in which this tax was payable before 2015 was challenged in the European court and a decision was made that by charging higher rates to non-residents in Spain it discriminated against EU nationals. Once Britain is outside the European Union it is possible British residents will be treated as citizens of countries outside the EU, with a return to the high pre-2015 inheritance tax.

There is a possibility that the principle of reciprocity might be applied to some taxes post Brexit. For example, the fact that spouses of Spanish residents would not be charged inheritance tax in the UK could allow for some negotiation on inheritance tax provisions post Brexit. The important thing is to obtain information now on what inheritance tax could become payable, and what measures might need to be taken post Brexit if you are a UK citizen.

From Snap Shot to Great Shot

7 Tips for Learning How to See What Your Camera Sees Part 1 Seeing the world through your camera’s lens has certain similarities and definite differences to looking at the world without your camera. Even with the most basic digital camera you can create photographs that you cannot naturally see with your eyes. Understanding how your camera sees differently than your eyes will help you become a more creative photographer.

1. Frame Every photograph is bound by a frame; four sides and four corners. You don’t see your daily life with such restrictions to your vision. Learning to create well composed photographs means you must work within the boundaries of that frame and make the most of it. Don’t see the frame as a restriction, rather an opportunity to enhance and share your vision. Carefully compose your chosen subject. Be selective of what to include and what to exclude so your frame only shows what you want to show.

2. Zoom If you cannot achieve a composition just how you want it to look, you might consider changing lenses or zooming closer or wider. This is something our eyes 32

cannot do. To see detail in something you are looking at you must move closer, and to see a wider angle of view you must step back. Changing lens focal length gives your camera the ability to remain in the same position and yet see either a wide angle of view or a very narrow one.

3. Focus One of the initial things I learned after buying my first camera was the importance of focus. Since I first learned to focus my camera I’ve had to start wearing reading glasses so I can see whatever is close to me clearly. If your eyes are good you never even think about their ability to focus, they just do, continuously and without delay. It’s important to learn how to focus your camera lens so the most important element(s) in your composition is sharp. Sometimes it’s a photographer’s choice to create soft focus photos, but generally a well focused photo will draw the viewer’s eye to the most significant part of the composition.

out and about in Moclinejo Determined to find the much-talked-about bodega in Moclinejo, I made Michelle stop at what turned out to be an enormous warehouse on the outskirts of the town.

Although it wasn’t quite the winery I was looking for, the visit turned out to be most fortuitous as we were met by José Luis Muñoz, great grandson of the founder of Bodega Antonio Muñoz Cabrera. José Luis spends his time between the company’s laboratory (we learned a lot about the science behind wine-making that morning!) and the museum actually in Moclinejo itself, which forms part of the original bodega and family home.

Bodega Antonio Muñoz Cabrera was founded in 1927

by Juan Muñoz Navarrete, but it wasn’t until 1963 that the company got its name when Juan handed over the reins to his son, Antonio. Since then the company has built up a huge range of wines, won a number of awards and is developing its first sparkling wine.

José Luis took us down to the bodega and museum, located in the town centre, where he gave us an unplanned and hugely insightful guided tour, explaining the history of this family-run company which is now in its fourth generation. He also gave 34

us a bottle of the multi-award winning Zumbral sweet wine, which I can say is extremely good!! Tours of the museum / bodega in English can be given by arrangement, by emailing Ignacio: ignacio@dimobe.es As you walk up the narrow street away from the museum and towards the main square, Plaza de España, you are hit by an explosion of colour; colourful mosaic patterns, using recycled tiles cover the walls leading up to the town’s contemporary art museum, Museo de Arte Contemporaneo Antonio Segovia Lobillo, which can be accessed via the town hall on the main square, or up the tiled steps (recycled of course!). Look out for the different colour ladybirds above brightly coloured exterior. Contact: 952 400 586 The recycled mosaics are the creation of culture councillor, Antonio Montañez, who also runs the Casa Museo Axarquía in El Valdéz, a village belonging to Moclinejo. The museum pays tribute to art and culture typical of the Axarquía and can be easily identified by its OUT AND ABOUT in MOCLINEJO

beautifully handcrafted items on display.

In her spare time Chari also runs the local branch of the Malaga astronomy society and holds events in the town.

Visitors to the town a greeted by an impressive arch at the entrance, with a small fortress to one side. The views from here through to the whitewashed town, as well as down to the sea really are breathtaking as the town is situated 432 metres above sea level.

Other things to look out for in and around Moclinejo include the Manchón de las Minas, which is just two kilometres from the town; according to legend the Manchón de la Minas form a series of entrances to silver mines. However, the story goes that the mines were closed as it was too difficult to drain the amount of water that entered the mines, making excavation difficult. Hard to imagine nowadays with the drought!

Moclinejo is the start of the Ruta de la Pasa (raisin route) and every year in September the town celebrates its most important product with the Fiesta de los Viñeros (wine festival). This year it

falls on 9 September and the festival is a tribute to the people who work in the industry, with demonstrations explaning the cultivation of grapes, the elaboration process and live grape treading…yes, with bare feet we are led to believe! The festival also includes traditional Verdiales music and paella for all as well as wine tastings.

Incidentally, José Luis explained to us that while he remembers treading the grapes with his feet, the family business has since let machines take over…perhaps that’s where the idea that cheese and wine go so well together comes from?

Other festivals celebrated in Moclinejo include Carnival in February, Easter Week and El Paso (live representation of the Passion Play) in March or April, culture weeks and a livestock fair. Finally El Valdés feria takes place in July, while Moclinejo’s happens in August.

There are bars and restaurants around Plaza de España that offer breakfast, tapas and main meals. There are also plenty of hiking and mountain biking routes around the town. For further information contact the town hall (www. moclinejo.es) To get to Moclinejo, either take the 256 exit from the A7 motorway and follow the MA 3200 to Benagalbón, which turns into the MA3119 after Benagalbón up to Moclinejo. There are buses from Malaga city (bus station at the port).

GUT ENEMY NO. 1

In recent years there has been a lot of discoveries regarding our intestinal flora, the microbiome, or as popularly called, the gut.

Although it sounds a bit disgusting we gradually or abruptly need to be aware of the importance of having a good balance in the gut. This comes from, that we actually carry at least 3 kilos of small organisms in the intestine. The most common ones are bacteria and fungus and mould but there may also be some parasites.

It is interesting to know that there are 10 times more of these organisms in our bodies than there are cells. Because of this, the daily life in the intestine is not only to excavate nutrition, proteins, vitamins and minerals from the food. Vital hormones are produced in the gut and can affect how our bodies function and our psychological wellbeing.

An example is the happiness hormone Dopamine without which it is difficult to be content with life. True that Dopamine also is produced in the brain so we can have a laugh or two even if our stomach is in bad shape but 60-80 % is manufactured in the gut.

One of the most important house guests in the intestine is the fungus Candida Albicans.

It is fungus related in its structure to yeast fungus and is of use primarily in the digestion of sugars with a process of fermentation.

The way this fungus works is that it produces toxins in order to break down the food. Up to 78 different toxins, Formaline and others.

In the medical world the importance of this fungus is getting more and more attention.

A fact is that there is almost nothing that can kill this fungus and that it is very important to keep it in check. The key to this is the PH value of the various parts of the body. If we feed upon processed carbohydrates, drink too much alcohol, coffee, or if we are dedicated smokers, we are clearly depriving the body of the oxygen it needs and it turns acidy.

If we avoid junk food and eat a lot of fresh vegetables we turn more alkaline.

We do need to be sufficiently alkaline in order for the immune system to work well. Sugar is one of the things that have the lowest PH value one can get apart from acids that will burn holes in our stomach. Water is pretty neutral with a PH value of around 5. Cola is about 2.5 which is 100 000 units lower than the body needs.

One would think that lemon is very acidic but curiously enough, if you take the juice from one lemon and mix it with a level teaspoon of bi-carbonate soda and water, before drinking it, you will likely not get either heart burn, reflux or gout. It has a PH value of 9, 100 times higher than the body needs and must be taken on an empty stomach.

Blueberry Cheesecake RECIPE

For the biscuit base 75g (3oz) digestive biscuits 25g (1oz) butter 2 teaspoons golden syrup

For the cheesecake 300g (11oz) full fat cream cheese 65g (21/2oz) caster sugar 1 lemon, grated rind and juice 200ml (7fl oz) double cream For the topping 1 teaspoon cornflour Juice of ½ lemon 2 tablespoons water 40g (11/2oz) caster sugar 200g (7oz) Chilean blueberries

METHOD

Add the biscuits to a small plastic bag, seal the top then crush the biscuits with a rolling pin. Heat the butter and golden syrup in a small saucepan until melted, stir in the biscuit crumbs and mix together. Divide between 8, 75ml (3fl oz) heart shaped sections in a flexible silicone cake mould. Press the biscuits into a thin layer with the back of a teaspoon. Chill while making the filling.

Add the cream cheese, caster sugar and lemon rind to a bowl and whisk together briefly until just mixed. Gradually whisk in the lemon juice and the cream until smooth and thick.

Spoon the cheesecake mixture into crumb lined moulds then spread into an even layer and swirl the tops with the back of a spoon.

Chill for 5 hours or overnight.

To make the blueberry topping, add the cornflour to a small saucepan, stir in the lemon juice and mix until smooth then add the water, sugar and blueberries. Cook over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes, stirring until the blueberries are just beginning to soften and has thickened to become a 54 the Thesauce DIRECTORY February 2018

That every February, Malaga province solemnly marks one of the bloodiest events of Spain’s Civil War; the Desbandá. As Franco’s troops moved into Malaga, thousands of civilians, among them women, elderly people and children, fled the city along the Malaga to Almeria road – now known as the A340. People took the belongings that they could carry and those who had donkeys loaded the animals with as much as possible and went. It is estimated that up to 150,000 people tried to flee Malaga in early February 1937.

There was little other means of escape, due to the difficulty of passing the mountains to the north of the city, both in terms of their sheer height and the fighting that took place in them. Also, Almeria was still considered safe from Franco’s Nationalists as it was still controlled by Republicans, to whom the majority of Malagueños (both from the city and province) were affiliated.

On 8th February 1937, Spanish, Italian and German warships and planes opened fire on those trying to escape along the coastal road and thousands were injured or killed in the massacre. It was described by the New York Times as the “most terrible evacuation of a city in modern times.”

Canadian doctor and prominent communist, Norman Bethune, along with a team of medical staff, came to the aid of the fleeing refugees. He would take those most in need to Almeria by ambulance and give them blood transfusions and other medical help. He later went on to write his account of the events in “The Crime on the Road Malaga-Almeria.”

In recent times more has been learned about the Desbandá, as there are still living survivors who would have been children at the time. Some have been prepared to talk about their experiences for books and documentaries that have been made about the tragic events of February 1937.

While for younger generations of Spaniards and other Europeans, the events of the early 20th Century in Europe are almost impossible to comprehend, I believe it is important to understand the history of a road so well-travelled by all of us.

WHAT´S ON Kim Wayenberg will be showing her beautiful Mandalas. She is a Dutch artist who lives in Frigiliana. Kim creates spiritual paintings. She developed her own style in Mandalas, mixing acrylics with mediums. By practising Mala-meditations she translates energies into her Mandalas. She also works on commission base, she ‘tunes in’ to the energy of the room or the person, inspired by this input she creates a very personal ‘Mandala painting’.

Dutch artist Linda Roffel has been fascinated by colour and shape as a means of expression for a long time. She uses that fascination to create sensual portraits of the backs of women. Using Acrylic paint and only a palette knife – she usually works with four pigments at a time: grey, white, brown, yellow and sometimes red. With these deceptively simple ingredients she creates structure, depth and transparency in her images. Three of her works will be shown in the gallery.

Italian artist Daniele Vignati was born in Milano in Italy. Daniele creates abstract, colourful and bright images. “The artist gives shape to images which come from a reality unknown. The artist has the ability to make the invisible, visible.” Daniele exhibits her art in Italy and various other European countries. It is the first time she is exhibiting her paintings in Galeria Luz de la Vida.

JOIN THE ROYAL BRITISH LEGION Since 1921, The Royal British Legion was established to support the UK Armed Forces community through the inevitable tough times faced throughout their career and long after they’ve discharged. The UK’s largest Armed Forces charity, the organisation is supported by a team of volunteers and boasts over 220,000 members. Through membership, volunteering and fundraising, the Legion has been proudly able to support and provide services to assist those who serve and protect their country.

We are lucky enough to have The Royal British Legion Southern Spain branches that provides support services to not only serving members and ex serving members but also their family members, dependents or carers.

Support varies according to which part of the community you are from and on offer is a wide range of assistance. Whether it be financially, socially or emotional support, the Legion is here for you.

They will be your voice by campaigning on key issues, they will be your guide during your rehabilitation and they will be your friend when you need one the most.

The Legion is here to strengthen resilience and support you in forming and developing meaningful connection with family and friends through their integrated support services. A motorcycle Riders Branch is another activity on offer which provides an outlet for young and old, male and female to share in the camaraderie of a shared interest and passion.

We have 6 branches here in the Axarquia and close by which are run by people with a firm commitment to providing support to their members. With organised regular activities, you are sure to find an opportunity to get involved and connect with
