A Message from the Commodore
The month of May officially marks the start of the 2023 boating and pool season. Colleen and I can’t wait to start spending time on the water and around the island enjoying all the wonderful activities our club has to offer. We have continued to be blessed by incredibly mild weather that enabled our yard crew to get all the docks installed ahead of schedule so we can start launching boats. It’s been great to see many of you sanding, painting and waxing in preparation for launching. This is always an exciting time of year.
the Board of Trustees, Management Committee, Fleet Engineer, Treasurer and General Manager have been doing throughout the winter, including the installation of new B and C docks in the North basin. There will be particular emphasis on the upcoming plans to replace the bridge. Please be sure to check out the article in the Islander detailing the latest on the new traffic patterns on the bridge and what to expect in the coming months.
The next day, the Power Fleet will host its annual kickoff party with USCG inspections followed by a cookout. This is a perfect opportunity to ensure your boat is safe and ready to go for the season.

The calendar is particularly full this month with of a variety of events that everyone can look forward to. We kick things off with two concerts on May 4 and 7 by our beloved CYC Chorus in the clubhouse where they will be entertaining us with Broadway tunes. On May 6, the club is hosting a Kentucky Derby Party followed closely by the annual Ladies Spring Social (with special celebrity bartenders!) on the 9th. Then, of course, we will all honor mom on the 14th with our always popular Mother’s Day Brunch. The Sail Fleet kicks off its season with the annual Shrimp Boil on Saturday the 20th, followed by the Porch Opening Party on the 26th. This signals our return to outdoor dining, with one of the best views anywhere.
There’s certainly something for everyone to look forward to and I encourage you to check out the calendar and the rest of the Islander for more details on these events and many others. Special thanks once again to all the volunteers and our staff who continue to do an outstanding job organizing these events. Our club would not be what it is without their hard work and dedication.
On May 12, we will have our Annual Spring Membership meeting where you can learn all about the improvements
We will wrap up the month with the Memorial Day Weekend, full of traditional activities including the opening of the pool, the Art Walk (chaired by Marcello Mellino), Car Show (chaired by Jim Winton), and the Boat Hop (cochaired once again by Andrew Kobak and Dana Textoris). We’ll wrap up the holiday weekend with our Memorial Day Commissioning Ceremony, one of our oldest and one of my favorite traditions at the club. I encourage everyone to take some time out of your day on Memorial Day to join us at the flagpole as we officially commission the fleet for the season and honor the service men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. It really is a very special event. Check out the article on page 8 from P/C Evans for more details on this wonderful tradition.
If you haven’t already done so, please remember to pick up your new membership cards and windshield stickers. This will enable our team to provide a pleasant and orderly experience as we enter the island while continuing to maintain a secure gate. As the island gears up for the season be especially careful and be sure to honor our 10-MPH speed limit.
Colleen and I wish each of you a very safe and secure season and look forward to seeing each of you on the island very soon.

Hitting the Lake after Spring Launch
The Power Fleet schedule is jam-packed with fun for all. Even if you don’t have a boat, you can still join us for many of our planned events! See below for full details.
If you’re a member of Power Fleet or have interest in joining, please RSVP on the club’s website.
June will get the boating season into full swing. Destinations and activities are listed on the calendar here and online.
The high interest in boating that occurred during Covid has continued through our upcoming season and still impacts the docks available at many of our ports. It’s important to sign up soon for secured dockage.

Launch Party sets the season on cruise control
Don’t miss out on all the fun this Power Fleet season! Come to the Launch Party on May 13 at Center Isle.
No boat? No problem. Center consoles and sailboats, we need you! Cabin cruiser, where have you been?
Bring the entire family and join us and learn all about Power Fleet while enjoying a complimentary cookout, USCG Vessel Inspections, a boating/water safety program for children, a chance to meet the skippers of this year’s cruises, along with games and prizes for the kids. We’ve revamped our cruising schedule this year to include more day boating excursions/family fun days where you don’t need a “Cruiser” to participate!
In fact, we’ll be leaning on our Center Console members to help with fishing and tubing/skiing family fun days! Of course, we have our destination cruises as well, but this year we made hotel reservations at a few of our ports of call. So, if you don’t have a cruising boat or no boat at all, one of our skippers will “cruise you” to the destination (and back) where you can stay at a local hotel and join in the fun!
See you at the Launch Party:
9 a.m.-noon: USCG Vessel Inspections for any interested boater
10 a.m.-noon: Kids boating Safety Program with the Metroparks Police Boat Noon: Free cookout and games/prizes for the kids

Bridge Replacement Update
New traffic signals manage one-lane access
We would like to provide an update regarding upcoming changes to the traffic patterns on our bridge. We recently restriped a portion of the bridge in anticipation of additional changes. We have made the following changes to reduce the flow of traffic to one lane of traffic:
(1) Two traffic signals have been installed to safely manage the one-lane traffic. There is one traffic signal located on the bridge facing westward to manage traffic coming onto the island and a second traffic signal is located on the island near the Guard House to manage traffic exiting the island. These traffic signals will work like any other traffic signal.
The two traffic signals have been professionally programmed to operate synchronously and use radar sensors to trigger operation in the presence of vehicles. We expect that the operation of the traffic signals may need to be altered as the overall volume of traffic begins to increase for the summer, and we ask for your patience as we work through this process.
(2) We have also installed traffic delimiters to physically direct all traffic to
Corn E r
one lane on the bridge. These de-limiters have built-in reflectors to ensure they are visible at night.
Many of our longtime members will recall that traffic across the previous bridge to the island was controlled by traffic lights. Like then, all of us are anxious to reach our beautiful island and enjoy all the wonderful activities our Club has to offer. We ask for your patience and for your consideration of other members— by respecting the traffic signals—even though you may be delayed a few moments.
Once again, it is our intention to maintain one-lane access to and from the island until the bridge is replaced, which is expected to take approximately 12-18 months. We will continue to provide you with additional updates in the Islander and by e-mail as more details become available. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work through this challenging project.

HOISTING THE FLAG
Sound the bugle! Memorial Day Commissioning Ceremony is nearly here
The month of May is full of the promise of warm weather, a new yachting season and the joy of a CYC summer. Reaching back into the rich history of our club, for over 140 years Memorial Day has marked the CYC Commissioning Ceremony. Please join us this year on May 29.
This event signifies the start of the boating season, and the joy of our return to CYC in anticipation of a summer of fun! The afternoon events are full of respect for our traditions and the excitement of gathering to celebrate our love of each other and our island home.
This day has always provided a time to honor our CYC families, including my own.
In 1962, at the invitation of that year’s Fleet Captain, Jay C. Ehle, my older brother Bill Evans (age 12), was selected to play the bugle for the Flag raising. It was a day of great pride for our family as my brother didn’t miss a note!
The day is always bright and sunny. Fleet Captain Slaght should be reminded, that it never rains on this event! The island flowers are in full bloom and all boats are cleaned, spit polished and ready for action. Our children are always glad to see the end of the school year and joyous to begin Sail Camp, Swim Team and other island activities.
The event begins with the festive sounds of Bagpipers on the Island. At precisely 1600 hour (4 p.m.), a cannon boom signifies the start of the event at the CYC flagpole. Under the direction of our Fleet Captain, colors are raised and the CYC Chorus delights us with inspiring patriotic music. A member of the local Clergy provides a message of faith and hope for the coming season. Of course, since it is Memorial Day, we pay homage to our fellow Americans who served in the military to preserve and protect our freedom.
This day is one of our most cherished and time-honored traditions at CYC!

Saturday, May 27
Celebrate Memorial Day Weekend with the annual Boat Hop, Car Show and Spring Art Show on Saturday. Musical entertainment by steel drummer Ken Greene. Plus, enjoy special fare.
The Boat Hop is from noon to 3 p.m. Cruise the clubhouse docks and check out boats, boats, boats! All members are invited to enjoy a tour of some of the most amazing boats at CYC! Spend the afternoon hopping and bopping from boat to boat to meet fellow members and enjoy refreshments around the island. Prior to hopping, stop by the front desk to pick up a map and program highlighting the boats that will be on display. Any questions? Want to serve as a boat host? Contact event chairs Andrew Kobak and Dana Textoris at Andrew@ClevelandPA.com.
The Car Show, AKA Old Beauty Auto Gathering will be 1-4 p.m. According to Jim Winton, “It is time to journey to CYC with your ‘Old Beauty.’ And please start paying homage to Mother Nature for a warm and sunny day for our gathering. Please let me know if you plan on joining us. This time the old beauty needs to be pre-1980. However, if you would like an exception, let me know. Parking is at a premium this weekend. Only member cars can park on the island. The CYC shuttle bus will be going up and down throughout the day, but most people just walk back down to save time, plus the exercise is good for you. If you need to trailer your beauty, you will then take the trailer back up to the parking area. I do need an old beauty count for the day, so please let me know.”
In addition to the Boat Hop and Car Show we will showcase our member-artists in the Art by the River Show, as their work will be displayed at Center Isle from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., featuring a great variety of artistic creations.
Commissioning Ceremonies
Monday, May 29
Join us on Memorial Day for the traditional flag raising signifying the start of our yachting season. Prior to the 4 p.m. start, The Lochabers Bagpipers will be roaming our island playing their beautiful sounds and our CYC Chorus will perform during the ceremony. Complimentary refreshments will be served on the Porch. These festivities are under the direction of Fleet Captain Philip Slaght. Pastor Keith Hileman from Bay Presbyterian is the 2023 Invocator. (See the history article on page 8.)
Due to the busy Memorial Day holiday weekend, all guests will be directed to off-island parking. CYC shuttles will be available all weekend long running back and forth between the parking lot and our island. Thank you for your understanding.
