A Message from the Commodore

Colleen and I enjoyed a fantastic 4th of July at the Club and a Regatta week we will never forget. We couldn’t be more grateful for the incredible job the entire team did to make it a truly memorable experience for us. A huge thank you to Sarah and Chris van Raalten and your army of volunteers. Without members like you, our Club would not be the special place it is.

Congratulations to the junior sailors representing CYC who earned the right to participate in US Sailing’s Triple Handed Championships. At the Area E qualifying regatta, held at CYC on July 10, the team of Buck Rathbun, Adam Starck and Reese Levinson took first place, followed in second place by the team of Willem Vanderhorst, Jane Rathbun and Katherine Starck.

CYC Islander deadline: We welcome members’ photos for the newsletter. Drop off copy and/or photos for the September issue to the CYC Islander mailbox in the Club office by August 10. You may also send copy to msmith@cycrr.org.

Last month’s CYC Regatta culminated with the traditional Squadron Sail, saluting our Commodore.

While the August calendar is a bit lighter, there remains a host of activities for everyone to enjoy. One of the longest standing sailing traditions is the annual Falcon Cup from CYC to MHYC. The 86th running will be held on August 12. Good luck to all the sailors. The Power Fleet continues to round out its annual schedule of cruises with trips to Cleveland, Cedar Point and Vermilion. Check out the calendar for more details on these events and many others.

August 7 marks our annual Employee Appreciation Day. Marc has planned an outing to a Cleveland Guardians game where the staff will have a chance to enjoy themselves “off island” for the day. Please take a moment to personally thank your favorite team member for the incredible job they do for all of us. We are very fortunate to have such a dedicated group of employees.

Our Fleet Engineer and the Management Committee continue to make progress on the plans to replace our bridge. Things are progressing well, and we will share additional details as soon as things are finalized. In the meantime, please continue to follow the modified traffic patterns. We really appreciate how well everyone has adapted to the change.

In the June Islander, we published a short article introducing a clubhouse renovation project. The Strategic Planning Committee and the Board of Trustees have continued to make progress on the details and are now ready to share them with the membership. Please join us for a Town Hall Meeting on Thursday, August 31, at 7:30 p.m. or on Saturday, September 2, at 11 a.m. where we will share additional details of the project. The meeting will include details of the renovation plan, timing and options to pay for the project. We’ll also provide an opportunity for Q&A. I look forward to seeing many of you at the Town Hall.

Colleen and I continue to enjoy a fantastic summer season at the Club and, as always, we hope to see you all on the island again very soon.

Members since 1952

Cheers to our longest-tenured members at the Membership Appreciation Dinner to kick off Regatta week: P/C John Salisbury and Rosemarie Slaght. They have been part of the club events for more than seven decades...and counting.

REGATTA, REGATTA, REGATTA

What a boatload of fun at CYC during the week-long regatta!

Dressing the fleet and cardboard boat races kicked off the week on Tuesday with plenty of family fun all week at the kids’ pool games, fishing derby, movie night, Flag Line breakfast and rib cook-off. The adults also had a great time at the inaugural CYC Island Race of the remote control fleet, ladies luncheon, and themed-evening bashes under the tent..

Fine Art Fleet

Summer has certainly arrived on the island, and once again boating is in full swing on our lake!

With the 2023 Regatta events still fresh on our minds, we continue to enjoy all that our Club is offering week after week, with an occasional visit to the Library where new artworks created by our members can be enjoyed throughout the year. This month we wish to welcome back Pamela Gilliland with one of her paintings titled “Water droplets.”

Pamela has been a member of the CYC for many years, where she has enjoyed boating and much more! She is a wellestablished artist in the Cleveland community, having participated in numerous group and solo exhibits throughout the area. Earlier in her career, Pamela had the opportunity to design for George Lucas productions and for Walt Disney World, subsequently relocating to the West Side of Cleveland. Several of her paintings are now part of numerous permanent local art collections, including the Nordson Company, University and Southwest Hospitals. Her work is deeply influenced by water and the surrounding nature, as seen in the painting being displayed in the Library; a clear attraction toward these subjects is evidenced in most of Pam’s outstanding artistic production, currently represented by Bonfoey Gallery, BayArts and other prominent venues.

We appreciate your interest and support of the Fine Art Fleet...stop by to see our works on the island.

A show of gratitude

SAIL FLEET

CYC to host prestigious championship

The Star Class traces its history back to 1910 when Francis Sweisguth penned the design for a group of yachtsmen from New York City who were sailing on Long Island Sound. Over 112 years later, The Cleveland Yachting Club is honored to be hosting the 2023 Star Class Western Hemisphere Championships, a Silver Star event for a class with some of the biggest names in yachting history, like Lowell North, Dennis Conner, Buddy Melges, Paul Cayard and Torben Grael.

A Silver Star Championship is one of the premier annual events for the Star Class, second only to the World Championship. The honor bestowed upon the Western Hemisphere Championship winning skipper and crew is represented by the silver star that they will now have the right to display on their mainsail. The other Silver Star events are the North American Championship, the South American Championship, the European Championship, the Eastern Hemisphere Championship and the Southern Hemisphere Championship. Although CYC has never hosted the Western Hemisphere Championship, the North American Championship has been held at our club on

five occasions, the earliest being in 1966 and the most recent in 2000.

CYC has hosted the Star World Championship once, in 1990.

With the 2023 World Championship being held in Italy and the 2023 North Americans being held in Vancouver, the Star Western Hemisphere Championship at CYC will be the highlight of the season for a large number of U.S. and Canadian Star sailors. Forty to fifty teams are expected to cross over the bridge at the end of Yacht Club Drive, looking to achieve what many would consider to be the accomplishment of a lifetime.

For more information, visit cycrr.org under “More” tab 2023 Star Western Hemisphere Championship.

September 9 - 14

CYC is hosting the Star Class Western Hemisphere Championship next month. We can use your support in the following ways.

1) Housing. Consider hosting racers or race committee members in your home during the regatta. Email P/C Brian Cruse at crusertoo@aol.com.

2) Volunteer. We need volunteers on and off the water.

3) Grab some gear: http:// starwesternhemisphere. shamrockstoreonline.com/

4) Consider sponsoring a beer keg. Contact Mike FitzGibbon at waterfrontdirector@cycrr.org.

I-LYA TRAVELERS SERIES CYC REGATTA

This summer CYC hosted an Inter-Lake Yachting Association (I-LYA) Traveler Series regatta, in which our sailors fared well. Pictured here are Connor Zupan and his dad Joseph working on their sail, and Bobby Starck on the water.

Doc-Side: Prevent tick bites

Protect yourself from ticks and tick-borne diseases.

As summer continues and you are all likely headed outside in the warm weather, please protect yourself from ticks.

Ticks are tiny insects that inhabit grassy, overgrown and wooded areas, not likely seen around the Island but perhaps in your backyard if you live near wooded areas. Ticks can carry diseases such as Lyme disease.

Symptoms of Lyme disease include a low-grade fever, achy joints, headache and a red, bull’s-eye rash. If you notice these symptoms, seek treatment immediately.

Please follow these tips to help prevent tick bites:

• Wear long pants, long sleeve shirts, and tuck your pant legs into your socks or shoes.

• Wear light colors since ticks are easier to see against brighter colors.

• Spray permethrin on your clothing.

• Apply a DEET-based or picaridinbased repellent to your skin.

Please note that ticks that are removed in less than 36 hours do not transmit Lyme disease or other tickborne illnesses.

Please stay safe!

—Dr. Rebecca Starck, CYC Fleet Surgeon

Boating with Green Tech: Sailing Toward a Sustainable Future

As the world increasingly turns to renewable energy sources, the boating industry is not being left behind. The trend of “green boating” is rapidly gaining momentum, promoting environmentally friendly practices that don’t compromise the joy and luxury of being out on the water. The key players in this sustainable revolution? Solar panels, wind generators and electric propulsion systems—technologies that are shifting the dynamics of boat power management, transforming vessels into eco-friendly havens that harness the power of nature.

Solar panels, which convert sunlight into electricity, are becoming increasingly efficient and cost-effective, making them an attractive addition to any boat. They are often used to power onboard amenities, reducing reliance on fossil fuels. Similarly, wind generators, capturing the abundant winds at sea, can provide a significant power source, especially for long journeys. But perhaps the most game-changing development is the emergence of electric propulsion systems. These engines are not only quieter and cleaner but, when combined with renewable energy sources, can offer a completely green boating experience. As more boat owners adopt these sustainable technologies, the future of boating looks not just enjoyable, but also environmentally conscious and sustainable.
