Commodore Daniel Clevenger Vice Commodore Michael Mansuetto Rear Commodore Andrew Drumm Fleet Captain Christian Tracey Management Committee Mike Harris Matt Dugan Tom McNeill III Mark Callahan General Manager Marc Dallas Editor Mary Ann Smith CYC Islander deadline: Drop off copy and/or photos for the May issue to the CYC Islander mailbox in the Club office by April 10. You may also send copy to msmith@cycrr.org.

It is crazy to me that it is already April. It felt like just a few days ago I was getting the boat ready for winter and now I need to get it prepped to splash in time for my launch date—with the Commodore Cruise trip happening in April I am sure I won’t have it ready in time, but please don’t let Brian O’Malley know! Speaking of the Commodore Cruise, we cannot wait to get to the BVI and board our catamarans for a week with family and friends. My daughters have had a countdown clock going for about two months, so I know they are excited. I am sure I will have some great stories to share. A huge thanks to P/C Lynn Lazzaro and Chip Schaffner for helping get the itinerary and details organized. So as spring is upon us, just a few weeks ago we had the annual CYC ski trip. This year we went to Peek ‘n’ Peak. Even though the weather during the week prior was warm, it cooled down and dropped some fresh snow and made for a great weekend. Lance Ambrose organized a wonderful luncheon in the main lodge allowing for the group to warm up and refuel for the afternoon skiing. On Sunday, March 6, P/C Mike FitzGibbon, Emad Estemalik, Laura Goldberg, along with coaches and counselors, held the Junior Activities SignUp Event. There were a number of parents and children in attendance learning more about this year’s Swim Team, Sail Camp and Junior Race Team plans. Some great new things are planned so make sure to check them out and sign up. Also for the adults looking for waterfront activities make sure to check out page 7! My countdown clock to St. Pat’s Day 2023 has started, but I sure did enjoy the festivities at the Club this year! Another fantastic Irish fare evening showcasing the talented Irish Dancers made for a festive St. Pat’s Day dinner and the Survivor Party the day after

with great music made for an awesome night. It’s always fun to be Irish for a few days! Big shout-out of thanks to Mark and Whitney Callahan and Fleet Captain Christian and Maureen Tracey for organizing both events. I noticed there is a new column from our technology committee chaired by Fleet Captain Christian Tracey. Tech Corner is a great way to keep up with what’s new and interesting in technology! Thanks to Justin Reed for making these happen. On a very proud note, I am excited to announce that The Cleveland Yachting Club was recently awarded the St. Petersburg Trophy. This prestigious national award is given annually by US Sailing to the yacht club which it deems has held the best regatta in the country over the past year. Technically the award is for best race management, but in reality, the best overall regatta is the winner. CYC won this award for hosting the 75th Thistle National Championships in 2021, which drew almost 100 boats and received rave reviews by all who participated. Led by Fred and Marilyn Hunger and John and Mary Lovett, the event is being honored for what it was—just amazing! The PRO from the event, Matt Bounds, also played a huge role in the event and for us to be presented with this award. I was honored to attend this event at the St. Francis Yacht Club and to accept this award on behalf of our club alongside P/C Kevin Carroll, P/C Greg Zenko and Matt Bounds (pictured here). Did you know that the last time CYC won the St. Petersburg Trophy was in 1995 when we hosted the 50th Thistle National Championship. The late P/C John Busch was the Race Committee Chairman for the event and he was most proud of this achievement. We are very fortunate to have the venue and volunteers to host these events and it makes it even sweeter being honored with this award once more! Enjoy the first month of spring, and I hope to see you around the club! — Commodore Daniel Clevenger

“Imagine yourself floating above the beach and looking down at the lapping waves on the shore,” says Sue. “Each color represents a gentle wave with a small bit of the previous wave left behind. Like life, when a loved one leaves this earth, they leave a small bit of themselves behind in the form of memories we cherish. I’ve been happily ‘pushing paint around’ for a few years now after being coaxed into trying my hand at watercolors by a dear friend. An unexpected joy! My mom is smiling from heaven.”

POWER FLEET

Fun on land before readying for launch Spring is upon us and our hulls will soon leave winter storage and be hitting the water. Last month, 60-plus attendees had a good time at Power Fleet’s Winter Get-Together at Main Event bowling, playing multiple games or just planning summer activities with good friends over a drink or two. In addition to all the food, fun and games, we celebrated Jamie Clevenger’s 13th birthday and Salem Stacey’s 20-something birthday.

U.S. Coast Guard Inspection, BBQ Luncheon, Raffle The Power Fleet’s next event is the annual USGC Inspection and BBQ Luncheon, on Saturday, May 14, skippered by P/C Jack Salisbury. USCG inspections will take place on the island, from 9 a.m. through noon. We encourage all members to take advantage of this opportunity—power and sail. The inspections are voluntary, free and there is no penalty if your boat does not pass the inspection. The inspection usually takes 10 to 20 minutes. If your boat passes the inspection, you will be awarded a decal, to be displayed on your boat, for the season. You can sign up on the CYC calendar website, or look for a Vessel Safety Examiner walking the island identifiable by their red shirt. From 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., we will have a complimentary BBQ luncheon, for all Power Fleet members. The menu includes hamburgers, hot dogs, chips, beer, soft drinks and all the fixings. The BBQ will be at Center Isle. This year we will also sponsor a 50/50 raffle for Power Fleet members, in which 50% of all receipts go to the winning ticket, and 50% to the Power Fleet activity fund. Limit of $1,000 of tickets will be sold at $10 per ticket, or three for $25—up to $500 cash prize. Tickets will be available from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m., on Saturday, May 14. P/C Jack Salisbury and others will have tickets to sell, as we walk the island, and at the luncheon. Drawing will be held after the luncheon at Center Isle at approximately 1:30 p.m.

Summer Cruises The CYC summer cruises are available for sign up on the CYC calendar website. Please sign up early, as this will assist the cruise skippers with obtaining sufficient dockage and planning activities. This is particularly important for the Traditional and Extended Long Cruises. It would be helpful to sign up by May 1, for these cruises, as we expect significant interest with Canadian ports opening up again to U.S. boaters.

Power Fleet Membership If you are not a Power Fleet member, but would like to join, please email us at rjadamsjr.saywhen@yahoo.com or call at 239-734-0944. Annual dues are $95.

FISHING FLEET:

Wet Hens ready for warm-weather pursuits

Clip-on or in-line weights?

March events kept us busy as winter waned:

The fishing tactics in every body of water change from time to time and the Lake Erie central basin is no different. The change in behavior of the target fish necessitates a change in tactics. You may remember the days of Reef Runners and Wiggle Warts being the go-to bait, but based on changes in fish preferences and behaviors, those days are somewhat over with the new go-to baits being Stinger spoons, Bandits, Flicker Minnows, Madeyes, etc. The Central Basin has seen more suspended fish over the past few seasons, which requires a change in tactics from going deep to a more midrange assault. We have used Dipsy divers at 25’ to 30’ back with spoons or shallow diving stick baits such as Perfect 10’s to achieve this midrange depth. However, another great tactic is the in-line or clip-on weight set up. The in-line weight is tied directly into the line, which is different from the clip-on weight. Achieving the right depth is a combination of size of the weight, pound test of the line, how much line is let out and speed of the troll. Adjusting each or all of the variables will allow you to reach the desired depth. Using a speed/weight matrix helps tremendously in this area. The clip-on weight is another option that offers the same opportunities as the in-line weight, with one exception, ease of changing your rigs. The clip-on weight is simply that, a weight that is clipped to the line after a desired length is let out. As an example, to reach a 25’- 30’ of depth with an in-line or clip-on weight at let’s say a 2.0 mph troll, 50’ of line needs to be let out, a 2 oz. clip weight added and then another 50’ of line let out. This set will achieve this depth within a few feet. It is our contention that clip-on weights are slightly more productive than inline weights, since the in-line weights may affect the action of the bait. We like to run a bit of everything, Dipsys, planners, in-line/clip-ons and naked in order to cover all possibilities at first, then hone in on what is working.

Nan Gregory presented an amusing look back at the fun-loving original Wet Hens. Ruth Pangrace performed as the infamous Cleveland con artist, Cassie Chadwick. Some of us skated around the Rocky River ice rink on St. Patrick’s Day and hikers and walkers got out on the trails and around the Island regularly. With the help of many Wet Hens, H2O was able to provide assistance and welcome to a recent immigrant and her newborn with whom we connected through The Hope Center. Our monthly dinner at CYC and happy hour at River Tap and Social began and ended the month with cheers! April has us thinking about kayaking, sailing and other warmer weather pursuits. Use the QR code to check the newsletter for updates from sailing, pathfinders and kayak chairs and to contact them about joining those groups. Jan Wade is offering to organize an Intro to Pickleball. If you are interested, email Jan with “Pickleball” in the subject line. On May 7, Wet Hens have the opportunity to take a boating safety course from Boat America. There is limited space and you must reserve your spot by calling CYC. Use the QR code to check the Wet Hens newsletter for details. Wet Hens is open to and welcomes all ladies of the Club.
