A Message from the Commodore
March ended up much differently than I had anticipated, as this was to be the month we ceased operations for four weeks while the bridge was being replaced. As such, we budgeted accordingly and rearranged our traditional events to accommodate this closure. We all know this did not happen, which left the club’s staff and our committee chairs little time to plan amazing events. Not surprisingly, they pulled it off flawlessly and March shaped up to be fantastic.
We started the month off at the tail end of the twoweek shutdown for much needed general maintenance and deep cleaning…some might have even have noticed the new automated clubhouse entry doors.
they tend to sell out fast. St. Patrick’s Day witnessed a great turnout at the O’Commodores Bar; well done Peggy for keeping the holiday themes going.
The Power Fleet kicked off its season at the Main Event on the 15th (pictured below). This year Ryan and Kristin Kovesdy are chairing the Power Fleet and are bringing much needed enthusiasm to the Fleet, including scheduling many new events. Keep in mind, you do not have to own a powerboat to join the Power Fleet. They host a series of on island events that are amazing.
One great annual event is the CYC ski trip to New York; special shout-out to Sarah van Raalten for spearheading this event. Regrettably the weather did not fully cooperate, but that did not prevent the adults from having fun, and the massive herd of kids enjoyed tubing versus skiing.
Back at the club, once again, Marc and his team hosted a wonderful Wine Dinner. These special events will continue throughout the year, so keep an eye on the calendar for more as
We rounded out the month with the Men’s Stag Night. Once again Rob Elwood and his team really know how to put together an unforgettable event. If we are lucky, Rob will continue running this event for as long as Jim Winton has run the Skeet Fleet!
As we move into April, I am excited for the Commodore’s Trip to St. Pete’s, Florida. We are also very excited for the Eclipse Party for the entire family. We are so blessed to have such a wonderful place to wait out this event together and watch our Guardians home opener. Plus let’s not forget about another favorite tradition, A Night of Fun with Mother and Son later this month.

Art Fleet beautifies our clubhouse with monthly exhibits in the Library
As this incredibly mild winter comes to an end, the annual “spring fever” is spreading quickly throughout the ranks of CYC boaters and their friends. Soon boats will be ready to get in the water, once all the dockage will be reassembled on the Island, and life as usual will resume on this remarkable place we all enjoy so much!
Your friends involved in the CYC Art Fleet have continued to share some of their works with the membership, and, as many of you might know, one of us has a sample of their creativity on view within the Library every month for all to enjoy.
Please welcome Ann Huffman and her beautiful photograph depicting a stormy Lake Erie shoreline, taken from Bradstreet Landing in Rocky River.
Ann is a very accomplished fellow photographer who has been involved for years in the local art scene with her splendid images of the lake and of our surroundings.
To all, a very happy spring!

Skeet Fleet
The Skeet Fleet enjoyed great weather and had fun at its annual CYC Skeet Fleet breakfast gathering at Hill ‘n Dale on March 16.. We had 26 of us: 4 squads of 4 shooters and 2 squads of 5 shooters. We were set up to shoot a 75 bird round of sporting clays and a single round (25 birds) of skeet, but not everyone shot the skeet.
And now the totals, by squads: (1) Dan O’Donnell = 255. (2) Chris DaJudge = 251. 3) Jim Winton = 234. (4) Mike Gaydos = 226. (5) John Wilson =210. (6) Mike O’Shea = 186. Mike asked me to burn his scores, but I happily enjoy sharing others pain (sorry Mike).
The individuals high scores for SPORTING CLAYS: (1) Matt Thompson with a 65. (2) Chris DaJudge with a 64. (3) Ben Thompson with a 60. SKEET: Jim Winton with a 21. Paul Beargie, John Anitas and Nolan Hellane all with 20.
Pictured here are P/C Chris Tjotjos, Andreas Tjotjos, Patrick Atchison and former member John Anitas.

Doc-Side: Cancer Prevention
I hope you are all enjoying the unseasonable warmth we’ve experienced this spring! I know many like to take advantage of the winter months and local skiing venues, but I believe we all prefer to spend time outdoors without heavy jackets and boots. During the spring season and change of seasons, I suspect many of you are doing spring cleaning! I would like to take this opportunity to advise you to consider your family checklist of recommended preventative health care. I discussed blood pressure screening, cholesterol and glucose testing in February. I cannot underestimate the importance of timely cancer screening this month. In the United States, close to 2 million people are diagnosed with cancer each year and approximately 600,000 people die annually from their cancer diagnosis, but prevention and early detection with screening can impact these outcomes.
March was colon cancer awareness month. It is the second highest cause of cancer deaths, however, early detection has cure rates close to 90%, whereas detection at late stage has a much lower survival rate. Current guidelines recommend colon cancer screening for men and women to begin at age 45. This is a newer recommendation and earlier than previous recommendations due to an increasing colon cancer incidence among younger individuals. Additionally, breast cancer screening (fourth cause of cancer deaths) should occur in all women of average risk at age 40. Cervical cancer screening should begin at age 21 and vaccination against HPV can significantly reduce cervical cancer rates. Lung cancer screening (#1 cause of cancer deaths by a significant number) is recommended for individuals with a significant smoking history. Unfortunately, approximately 130,000 people die each year from lung cancer, so please don’t smoke!
Please talk to your health care provider about what is recommended for you and add cancer screening to your spring cleaning checklist! Thank you and stay well!
—Fleet Surgeon Dr. Rebecca Starck
