A Message from the Commodore
As discussed in my prior Islander article, May is a great month at CYC, when all our friends resurface from hibernation and we start enjoying our happy place once again.
The month kicked off with a bang, at the annual FatherDaughter Dance hosted by P/C Charles Bredt, and after 25-plus years he is just getting this dialed in. Fathers, keep in mind for next year to make reservations early as this event always sells out.
Closely following, was the traditional (and yes, we love our traditions) Ladies Spring Social, hosted by the Wet Hens’ Ruth Pangrace, Deb Wadden, Pam Gilliland, Cindy Bacon and Nancy McMillan. With over 80-plus ladies attending, I was digging the ratio, and so was Rear Commodore Phil Slaght, as we assisted in bartending for the event.
There was plenty more to do in May, as the CYC Chorus performed a special two-night show at the direction of Legacy member Devon Gess; she is simply amazing and we are fortunate to have her leading the group. I must not forget about the glue that binds this group all together, P/C Chuck Inglefield…and that is all I have to say about that! (Forrest Gump)
The Annual Spring Membership Meeting is a tradition that dates back before internet, e-mails, cell phones, timely and reliable snail-mail, and most of us. This meeting was a must-attend event to learn about upcoming events, etc. Today’s modern communication has made this event a little less necessary, but we are happy to carry along the torch of tradition. Unlike the last several years, we did have a nice crowd, and we were able to answer a few questions upon finishing our committee reports. If you have not attended an Annual Meeting...you should.
As always, the Mother’s Day Brunch was a hit—a sold-out event for two seatings. Either the clubhouse is too small or the staffing is rocking the house with special events…either way with 300plus reservations, something magical is happening. Special thanks to Marc Dallas’s staff for making the event so great.
We ended the month with a jampacked Memorial Day Holiday, as we host more events than most other clubs do all year! We fired-off with a porch opening party on Friday evening, the Boat Hop Saturday (thank you, John & Gabby Salisbury), and Antique Car Show (thank you, Jim Winton), and the Art Walk (thank you, Marcello Mellino). These are amazing events and we should not take them lightly. The necessary planning to arrange all the boats, cars and artists is not easy and we should appreciate these members for their hard work and dedication to keep these events and traditions alive. On the heels of tradition, we must not miss the Commissioning Ceremony. Spearheaded by “CVR” Fleet Captain Chris van Raalten, this was one for the books. CVR did not take this task lightly and he did not disappoint. Of the 25-plus Commissioning Ceremonies I have attended at CYC, this was far and away the best. And as we say, “Sir, the Club is now in Commission”; that means open for business. Hmm... there I go again using the word tradition. I will be revisiting this later in the season once the activities slow down. I have a plan!
Moving into June, this is where all the hard work and planning comes to fruition. We start Sail Camp, Junior Race Team, Swim Team, and the Power Fleet finally leaves the Island. Whoa, I had better be careful or they will rescind my membership. I am already on probation after recently joining the Power Fleet after 30 years of sailing. Either way, we are happy all these activities are up and running.
If you have not done so already, consider attending the Commodores’ Ball, which is open to all members, but reservations are required. This is a special event and something you should consider attending, as you will not be disappointed. (See details on page 12.) Also look for details on Adult Learn To Programs and the fishing derby taking place in June.
In closing, get ready for Regatta! We will be going on a Great American Road Trip. Matt and Molly Davis (and team) have something special in store for us, so get ready! (See details on page 5.)

Stay safe this summer: What you should know about electric shock drowning
Unknowingly, many swimmers and boat operators place themselves in the face of danger by swimming near electricpowered boats and docks. This innocent act of fun can turn tragic as electric shock drowning occurs each year.
Our Yard Crew will be doing routine testing of every dock pedestal and performing in-water testing around every dock this season. However, an electrical malfunction can happen at any time from someone’s boat.
Help prevent electric shock drowning or other electrical injuries with these tips:
1.) Do not allow anyone to swim near docks or boats.
2.) If you feel a tingle while swimming, the water may be electrified. Get out of the water as soon as possible avoiding the use
of metal objects such as ladders.
3.) Never use electrical cords that are frayed or damaged or that have had the prongs removed or altered.
4.) Have Ground Fault Circuit Interrupters (GFCI) installed on your boat. Test them once a month.
5.) Consider having Equipment Leakage Circuit Interrupters (ELCI) installed on boats to protect nearby swimmers from potential electricity leakage into water surrounding your boat.
6.) Have your boat’s electrical system inspected and upgraded by a certified marine electrician regularly.
Flocktails with the First Lady
More than 80 ladies— along with a few gents— gathered at the Ladies Spring Social on May 7 for some springtime fun.
Commodore Andrew Drumm and Rear Commodore Phil Slaght served as bartenders.

Skeet Fleet Report
Your Skeet Fleet continues to shoot, but not nearly as often as we used to. The reasons are several. The two prime ones are its so called leader (the writer of this epistle) is no longer getting old. He is there. Additionally we now practice on Saturday mornings at the Beaver Creek Club in Amherst instead of Sundays, and there are other club activities we compete with for that time slot. But your Skeet Fleet will survive and practice when we can fit it in.
Every December we journey east and continue our longtime competition with the swamp frogs of Mentor Harbor. It is just a shame they are such good shooters.
Our other annual event is the breakfast gathering at the Hill-n-Dale Club in Medina. It always starts with a great breakfast, and then we break off into squads, with handicaps assigned if I get organized and compute them. Sometimes I do, other times, the match is all scratch. We shoot a 75-bird round of sporting clays, also known as “golf with a shotgun,” plus a round of skeet. If Mother Nature is in a good mood and blesses us with good weather, our turnout can be up to 30 shooters.
If you have interest in joining us, please let me know. Both Dave Freeman and I will be happy to help you get started with skeet shooting. If you do not have your own shotgun, do not go buy one until you shoot at least a couple of times. If you like it, then you can get one, but until then, you can use one of ours.

It’s finally summer and we’ll soon be able to enjoy all the beauty and fun that the CYC has to offer to all of us!
The Art Fleet wishes to thank many of our fellow members who came by our annual Memorial Day weekend Art Fair; everyone had a great time looking at the exciting variety of art creations exhibited by our member-artists and their guests, and we were certainly happy to see some of these works finding their new homes!
Sarah van Raalten has one of her wonderful summer theme paintings on view in the Library this month, and we wish to invite all of you to stop by, whenever at the Club, and allow yourself a few moments of visual pleasure, before your next dinner on the porch!
Wishing everyone a safe, happy and very enjoyable summer.

Doc-Side: Protect your skin using proper sunscreen
June is here and summer is in full swing, so please remember one basic layer of protection to prevent the most common type of cancer—skin cancer. If you’re out in the sun having a good time, it can be easy to think of sunscreen as an afterthought. But it’s important to be mindful about how you protect your skin, particularly if you love the outdoors. In fact, most people aren’t using sunscreen correctly or aren’t using enough sunscreen.
The importance of sunscreen can’t be overstated. The ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun are the leading cause of skin cancer. Regularly applying sunscreen can protect you and your skin from damage.
Here are some tips for sun protection:
Use the right amount of sunscreen. Chances are, you’re probably not using enough sunscreen. You want to use about a shot glass (I think everyone knows the size of a shot glass on the Island) full of sunscreen. That’s 1.5 ounces, or enough to cover your whole body. You need a pretty good coating. Also, don’t overlook the spots that are frequently missed, such as your ears, eyelids, lips, tops of your feet and scalp. Regardless of your skin type, make sure you apply sunscreen.
Facebook @Wet Hens CYC Instagram @cyc_wet_hens
Check out the Wet Hens Newsletter at cycwethens.blogspot. com. All committee chairs’ contact info are at the bottom of the newsletter, which can be accessed using the QR Code.
—Gail Cudak, Wet Hens Chair
Look for a sunscreen with a high sun protection factor (SPF) level. In general, SPF 30 or above is okay. But since most people don’t put it on frequently enough or use enough, you may need a higher SPF. Consider that if you use less than one-quarter of what you need—as many people do—and you use SPF 30 sunscreen, you’re only getting one-fourth the full amount, which is 7 or 8 SPF, or essentially nothing. You also want to look for a broad-spectrum sunscreen, which means it has UVA and UVB protection. And make sure you check the expiration date on your sunscreen. Most formulas are good for about three years.
Put on sunscreen anytime you go outside. If you’re only outside for 20 minutes, you still need sun protection. It’s easy to think that if you’re out for a short time, sunscreen isn’t necessary, but it’s still exposure, and depending on the time of day, you can get a sunburn in very little time. Also, 20 minutes can easily turn into 40—so get into the habit of applying sunscreen whenever you head outside.
Even a little bit of sun exposure can cause skin aging and worsen sunsensitive issues like melasma. A daily facial moisturizer with sunscreen is an essential component of your morning ritual.
Apply sunscreen 30 minutes before going out. You also want to make sure you’re applying your sunscreen before you head outside into the sun’s harmful rays. By doing so, you’re giving your sunscreen time to soak in. Otherwise, your first sweat washes it away.
Know when you need to reapply. If you’re out for more than an hour and a half or two hours, reapply. If you go swimming, you should reapply every time you get out of the water. Reapply more frequently if you’re sweating a lot as well. Even options that are labeled “all day” formulas should be reapplied throughout the day.
Consider alternatives to lotions, creams and sprays. Sun protective clothing is a great way to protect your skin. Most athletic brands have good options. These are listed as UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) as opposed to SPF factors, but the numbers are similar. For example, a regular white T-shirt gives about 8 UPF protection and most sun-protective clothing is around 50 UPF, so it’s a significant improvement. To obtain the Skin Cancer Foundation’s seal of recommendation, a piece of clothing needs to have 30 UPF or higher.
Protect your eyes. UV-protection sunglasses are an important way to protect against cataracts. You can get melanoma of the retina, though it’s not very common. Particularly when you’re on the water, the light is reflecting so you’re getting twice as much exposure. UV light exposure to the eye accelerates agerelated vision changes, too.
Overall, applying sunscreen before you head outdoors is key to preventing sunburn and skin cancer. You may wonder which sunscreen is the best? Ultimately it is the one you will actually use!
