A Message from the Commodore
Coming off the heels of a fantastic Commodore’s trip to St. Pete Beach, we made it home just a few short hours before the Great Eclipse Party at CYC. Kudos to Joe Calabrese and the CYC staff for having the incredible vision and execution required to pull off such an incredible event. Hours and hours of planning for an event that was weather-dependent, somewhat risky for Cleveland, Ohio in early April, but they nailed it! Along the lines of acknowledging great volunteerism, special thanks to Tana King and Liz Kasnekaw for spearheading the annual Mother-Son night of fun. The club also did a great job on the seafoodthemed night.
I must admit, May is one of my favorite months at the club, primarily because this is the month everything comes back to life and all the hard work and planning comes to fruition. For example, the tireless work of the Dock Committee juggling over 80 new slip assignments, truly a thankless task, but an essential job that takes months to achieve. Thank you P/C Allyn Adams and his team. This then leads into our brilliant Yard Crew that magically resets all the docks, launches the boats, and essentially transitions a boat storage facility back into a world-class yacht club. This all has to happen prior to us amassing at the Commissioning Ceremony at the end of the month. Please think about all the hard work it takes to put the island back into ship-shape, and be sure to thank our hard-working employees for making this happen.
Another reason I like May at the club, is it really is the start of the season and the event calendar reflects that. We fire off May with the annual Father-Daughter Dance led by P/C Charley Bredt, and after 25+ years, looks like he has this event
figured out! Close on the heels of that is the Ladies Spring Social (all ladies are able to join), and our beloved choir will host two wonderful concerts for all to enjoy. P/C Chuck Inglefield has asked me for a special favor…to plug the choir, as they are always welcoming new members.
May is also the month in which our major fleets start kicking off their events. The Power Fleet hosts its kickoff party and the Sail Fleet hosts its annual Shrimp Boil. Two wonderful events that are open to all CYC members. It is important to note, all members (regardless if you have a boat or not) are eligible to join either or both fleets.
Speaking of fleets, over the last several months, we have introduced nearly 30 new members, and we would like to encourage those new to the club to get involved.
We round out the month with a special Memorial Day weekend, with the Boat Hop, Antique Car Show and Art Show. Check the Islander story on page 4 for details on all Memorial Day events.
Lastly, I hope you attend the Porch Opening Party and Commissioning Ceremony. A lot of what we do at CYC is in keeping with tradition; something we should not take lightly. The Commissioning Ceremony is one of the oldest traditions we have, and if you have not attended this event, you are truly missing out.

News update from our “Front Door”
The CYC Gate/Security Committee is looking forward to a fun and safe 2024 summer season! The bridge traffic restriction remains in place, and based on everyone’s cooperation last year we anticipate “smooth sailing” this year. We are asking all members and guests for their patience as we work through this together, and abide by the traffic signals.
In concert with Management Committee, Waterfront Activities Director Nogay Dokmeci and General Manager Marc Dallas, our plan is to anticipate and communicate busy weekends and events to our membership. Running the shuttle for guests and employees will be utilized on an as-needed basis to control traffic flow and parking spaces.
We ask that all members review the House Rules regarding pets on the island. This policy will be uniformly enforced, and we appreciate in advance the cooperation of all pet owner members.
Also with the advent of Uber, Lyft, Door Dash and other vendors, our policy is to have delivery orders picked up at the Gate by those members ordering. These drivers will not be permitted access beyond the Gate.
This year’s stickers and membership cards are now available for pickup at the front desk. We thank our members for complying
eric long
with CYC House Rules to have current windshield stickers (remove old) and/or membership cards available as they enter the Gate as is our policy. Our guards require proof of current membership to grant access.
Lastly, in respect of and concern for our neighbors along Yacht Club Drive, we ask that you be aware of your speed due to increased pedestrian traffic and small children living in homes in the neighborhood. Please treat it as a “School Zone.”
We appreciate the opportunity to serve CYC through the Gate/ Security Committee, and always welcome input and suggestions on how we can enhance the member experience at our “Front Door.”

POWER FLEET
Ushering in the season with parties, inspections
It’s finally time to welcome the boating season with our annual kickoff party on Saturday, May 11. The United States Coast Guard will visit the island for boat safety inspections starting at 9 a.m. for any interested boat owner and will complete these until all interested boaters have received an inspection. Simply invite one of the certified inspectors onboard. They will be walking the island and easy to spot, wearing red polos and inflatable PFDs. The Spar Loft is also a good place to sync up with one. Inspections generally take 20 minutes to complete and make good sense at the beginning of the season.
Inspections are free and there is no penalty or reporting if your boat ends up needing something. Boats that pass will be awarded a decal for display.
During the inspections, the MetroParks boat will also be at CYC allowing kids to board the boat and ask questions. This is a fun and educational part of the day for the little ones!
Power Fleet members are then invited to the Spar Loft at noon to meet and greet and enjoy an All American Cook Out, featuring hamburgers, hot dogs, and simple sides washed down with a cold selection from the Power Fleet cooler. Though the Fleet is sponsoring this no cost event, reservations would be appreciated for planning purposes. Please RSVP on the club’s website.

Need help with the basics? Want to learn some specific techniques? Just want more confidence doing it through time on the water? Then these Adult Learn To programs for Sail, Powerboat, Kayak and Stand-Up Paddleboard are for you. Our instructors are experienced boaters who are or have been CYC Sail Camp instructors. They are not certified, nor do these programs lead to a certification. Instead, they are designed to introduce CYC members to the wonderful world of boating. They supplement your current knowledge and help you build confidence.
Come to one of the introductory working meetings scheduled below. The first meeting is complimentary. You can register for instructor-led sessions at the introductory meetings and will be billed to your account. Afterward, you will schedule individual sessions with instructors at a mutually agreeable time. Your cost for the program includes three 1.5-hour sessions with an instructor. Additional sessions can be added for $25 each. The program runs through mid-August. The program utilizes club boats or your own. Powerboat participants must have their Ohio Boaters License. Cost is $150 for Kayak and Paddleboard, $175 for Powerboating, and $225 for Sailing. Register for the introductory meetings online. The Pan Am Masters Games Sailing Competition will be held in the waters of Lake Erie on July 12-14, with practice days on July 10-11.
The Foundry Community Rowing and Sailing Center in Cleveland is the planning host for all sailing games. There will be Single-, Double- and Triple-Handed Divisions. The SingleHanded Division will be sailed in Full and Radial rigged International Laser Class sailboats. The Double-Handed Division will be sailed in PHRF-rated sailboats. The Triple-Handed Division will be sailed in International Lightning Class Boats. There will be two or three racing areas depending on the number of competing sailboats located off Edgewater Yacht Club, Wendy Park and the Gordon Park Marina areas. The headquarters and race offices will be at the Foundry at 1831 Columbus Road, Cleveland.
The Pan Am Master Games Sailing Committee is asking members of the local yacht clubs to assist in the running of the competition by volunteering use of power boats and/ or to skipper power boats for purposes of the Race Committee and safety vessels. Boats will be needed for all or any portion of the competition during the period July 10-14. Fuel, lunches, and event swag will be provided. Ideal safety boats would be center console models in the 20- to 30-foot range. Larger boats are needed for Race Committee locations on the race courses.
The Foundry and the Sailing Committee are also asking for volunteers to assist in all other areas of running the competition.
If you are interested in helping, please contact Dan Gourash at dfgourash@ sseg-law.com, (440) 570-1612. For more info see the sailing page on the official Pan Am Master games website, clevelandmasters2024.com/sports/ sailing/.
