A Message from the Commodore
I am writing this on the heels of the best Regatta ever, needless to say, I may still be a little dusty from six days of awesomeness! Our club is happy, healthy and vibrant...this was clear after witnessing record turnouts at every event and the hundreds of nonmembers enjoying our annual celebration. CYC is clearly the place to be and without question the greatest club on the Great Lakes!
Matt and Molly Davis and their team knocked it out of the park, and they did not just do this for the Drumms, they did this for the club. Their love for CYC is real and we all felt it. Their army of volunteers need to be identified and thanked. If you have an opportunity, please thank the following incredible members listed below. They are the hidden heroes who make these events happen.
REGATTA COMMITTEE
Harkening back, July was busy as anticipated. We kicked off July with the conclusion of the CYC swim team and the Flagline swim—another near Officer drowning, but the kids enjoyed every minute of it. Special thanks to Emad and Alejandra Estemalik for their continued leadership; we are lucky to have them as leaders and their exceptional volunteerism. This event was followed by a historical Roberts Race, the oldest race on Lake Erie and a tradition we cannot lose. We base our club on tradition and
July is also the month where we have six weeks of Sail Camp—a member tradition that leads to great leadership. These kids are the future of yachting and the future leaders of our great club. So please disregard the long lines over the bridge in the morning and the terrible speedbumps; these are small hiccups in time to future members, volunteers and leaders. Oh, and by the time you read this message, the speed bumps will have been removed. A special thanks to two Past Commodores who continue to help our club, Mike FitzGibbon and Dan Clevenger, both incredible volunteers leading our children in the yachting culture.
We also hosted our third annual Charity Cup Regatta, and this one does involve yacht racing. Hats off to the Rollinson Family for bringing awareness to the club and St Jude’s. If you missed any of the event due to vacation, there will be additional opportunities to give at an upcoming Charity Auction (August 9) and Powerboat Poker Run (August 10). All proceeds go straight to St Jude’s, so please get involved, as this event is open to all members.
We closed out July with the Power Fleet heading out on its annual Long Cruise. Ryan and Kristin Kovesdy have put together an incredible schedule, and, quite frankly, they have been doing an outstanding job all year as new chairs.
And just because most of the junior activities have ended and kids are approaching another school year, this does not mean the summer is over… far from it. August will be busy as well, just not crazy like the last few months! Please reference the CYC website calendar and watch for email blasts for upcoming activities.
In closing, we must all pay tribute to the recent passing of our favorite house mom, Kathy Wills. During our Regatta Member Appreciation Dinner, we were able to have an in-person appearance and one of the nicest send-offs anyone could have. This will be a moment we all remember, just like her. Eight Bells for Kathy, she will be missed.

GREAT AMERICAN ROADTRIP
Members did not have to leave the island to have a trip of a lifetime
General Manager
Message
As you can see in all of these fabulous photos in the August newsletter, the CYC Regatta was a great event. It was a week of nonstop action all around the Island, which provided hours of fun for the whole family.
Our club was transformed into the Great American Road Trip from July 9-14, with fun stops every day.
From the Meet our New Members in Key West, Florida party, to the Night at the Races in Louisville, Kentucky, to the Boot Scootin’ Party in Nashville, Tennessee, to Kids Games at the Santa Monica Pier in California, our Island replicated all the thrills of these other great cities.
A lot of creativity and hard work behind the scenes went into planning and executing this event. Many thanks to our hard-working staff and all of the member volunteers who pitched in, and a big shoutout to Matt and Molly Davis, who chaired the Regatta event, for their great vision and the hard work that went into planning an event of this scale.
Thanks to all the members who took and submitted photos so we could capture the fun in the Islander
—Marc Dallas, General Manager

Every time I cross the bridge onto the CYC island, I still wonder at its unique beauty and intriguing history, going back to centuries ago, before Cleveland was founded, when local indigenous tribes lived along the Rocky River and near the lake, building small encampments and burying their dead on the island during sacred rituals. The river we now enjoy for our boating pleasures was indeed a “working river” at the turn of the last century, with several boats and shipbuilding plants such as the Rocky River Dry Dock Co. operating here for decades.
This month’s painting by Marti Saltis, depicting the CYC Bridge with a spectacular Lake Erie sunset as its backdrop, should really bring into focus the beauty and the history of this small piece of Ohio land.
“This spectacular, yet well known sunset that CYC members are fortunate enough to regularly enjoy reminds us of just one of the many reasons that CYC is so cherished,” Marti says.
“Originally titled West Channel Sunset, for the time being, it is temporarily (with tongue in cheek) being called Rendering of the New CYC Bridge.”

The season had a beautiful start with a trip to Put-in-Bay and Kelleys Island. We beat the heat at The Crew’s Nest’s beautiful pool and in the water for a fun beach day at Kelleys. The following weekend the Fleet went north to Rondeau for fishing, dinghying and exploring the town.
Last month, the Power Fleet had an exciting meet-up at Sea Glass Beach for a flotilla, bringing together a variety of boats for a day of sun and fun on the water. Later in the month, we set off to the East Bank of the Flats for an adventurous bar crawl, enjoying the lively atmosphere and camaraderie.
Special thanks to the following for hosting fun cruises to start the season:
• Chris and Chari Zito - The Crew’s Nest
• P/C Scott and Mary Alyce DurhamKelleys Island
• P/C Jack and Kris SalisburyErieau in Rondeau
• Nick Allega and Michael Tomasone - Flats East Bank
As July comes to a close, we embark on our annual Long Cruise. This year’s journey starts at Rattlesnake Island and concludes at the beginning of August at Grosse Pointe Yacht Club. The cruise is sure to be filled with beautiful sights, great company and unforgettable memories.
August Adventures
August promises to be just as thrilling, starting with a trip to Nuevo on August 16 for a night of food and drinks at North Coast Harbor Marina in Cleveland. Make sure to register on the CYC website and book your dock directly with the harbor to secure your spot.
Later in the month, we will head to Vermilion for the weekend of August 23 & 24. This will be a fantastic opportunity to explore the area and enjoy some quality time on the water.
We will end August with another flotilla at Wagar Beach, weather permitting. It will be a wonderful way to wrap up the summer with friends and fellow boaters.
Looking Ahead
Stay tuned for more details about the Commodore’s Party happening in September. It promises to be a highlight of the season, and you won’t want to miss it.

Sail Campers learn while having fun on the lake
One of our Club’s most cherished programs, Sail Camp 2024 lived up to all of the great traditions. The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. Consistent with the vision of founder Danny Thomas, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay. In fact, through the generosity of donors, no families receive a bill for treatment, travel, housing or food. A secular institution, St. Jude treats 8,000 patients per year, 50 percent of whom are either underinsured or have no insurance.
