We are on the cutting edge of technology and innovative treatments, expanding El Paso’s forceful presence in our region. Not only is this important to El Paso, but also to our surrounding area – for our neighbors in New Mexico and Mexico. Instead of having to travel to other cities, people in our community can continue to receive excellent healthcare and watch as our healthcare services expand and gain international status. The world of health will always be a place of high employment and a way for our city to keep being recognized. Within the Nurse Practitioner field alone, 37,100 people will join the field by the year 2022. Our city is not only growing and allowing for some of these jobs to be filled, but we also have doctors that are being recognized for the great work they do.

That we are aware of, Jose Manuel de la Rosa, MD, MS received the Platinum Award, the top honor in the Texas Medical Association Award for Excellence in Academic Medicine. We also have Dr. Frank Agullo, MD, FACS and Dr. Humberto Palladino, MD, FACS that were named with the prestigious RealSelf award as a Top 500 Influencer in Cosmetic Surgery chosen from 13,000 members. We truly have some of the best doctors right here in our city.

We highlight Dr. Laiq M. Raja, who is doing extraordinary things in his field of interventional cardiology. Co-Owner, Verde Logistics You Have to Trust Yourself to Make It! Holly is truly a go-getter. No stranger to the business world, she comes from a successful family (her father is in a similar business). Yet her desires were not that of her father’s, she actually had aspirations of becoming a doctor, but life had a different course of action. After finding herself divorced and a single parent, she decided to join the family business.

The biggest risk I’ve taken: Is starting my own business. My father presented me with an opportunity, guidance and some start-up money, and therefore I decided to take a chance. It was never my goal to be a business owner. Six years into the business, six employees later, I am glad that I did.

Business lessons to remember: You have to trust that you can make it. During the first year it was extremely challenging. Even though I was the only employee, the business did not make any money … actually, it lost money. There were times I was unable to receive a paycheck, yet as a single parent I had to support myself and my son. I sought out additional ways to bring in income, which was extremely exhausting as I not only spent hours in the business, but on a second job as well. I quickly realized the business would have to make money in order to move forward. I advise, only keep going forward if you can see the light at the end of the tunnel, I was able to see that light. I trusted myself to make it. I’ve also learned that it is important not just to work in the business but on your business. When you are the only one, you’re really an employee and your own boss. You have to be willing to hold yourself accountable as you would any other employee.

You’ll never regret: Taking a leap of faith to start the business.

The moment I knew I made it: Hearing that I was Home Depot’s largest woman-owned transportation provider. My everyday mantra: Pre-plan your day. Time management is an absolute must. You have to set and be committed to your daily priorities.

I’m glad that I’ve never: Given up. There are times it can become quite over whelming and I’ve thought about quitting, but my pride won’t allow me to do so. I’ve never wanted to be seen as the one who couldn’t make it. I wanted to prove to myself, and others, that I can do it and I’m thankful that I am.

My greatest joy: Being able to build my dream home and provide a lifestyle for my family that I’ve always desired.

When asked about his specialty, he says “I studied with some of the best doctors in Louisiana who were experts in hand surgery.” The time he spent with those surgeons gave him valuable experience that would be instrumental in his later development of devices in hand surgery.

His specialty in hand surgery has made him a widely-known expert in this field because of the development of surgical devices that improve the recovery period for patients. He has designed three hand specific implants that are now being used.

Two of those devices are directly related to wrist fractures and one specifically for thumb instability and arthritis. He never stops working to improve the efficiency of orthopedic surgery and is currently working on a design for a device for the scaphoid, which is one of the carpal bones of the wrist. This device will greatly improve the healing process.

Pirela-Cruz is sought out by medical personnel worldwide because of his cutting edge hand and microvascular surgery, nerve transfers and replanting. “Dr. Cruz is a very good teacher and doctor,” says Fagan. “Because he is fluent in Spanish, he builds a rapport with his patients and that makes them feel good.” He is a dedicated physician who is also an accomplished musician. He plays the vibes (vibraphone) and particularly loves Latin jazz and often plays with local bands. He is also an excellent athlete and champion swimmer.

Pirela-Cruz is married to Janet Pirela, a registered nurse, who has returned to school and is studying accounting. They have two children, daughter, Leah, who is studying medicine in Rochester, New York, and their son, Juan Carlos, who is studying aviation.

“We focus on different specialties, including cancer and oncology in order to try to provide opportunities for patients to benefit from these trials,” said Dr. Jose D. Burgos, the center’s chief medical officer.

“Nobody else [in the area] is doing this. We work with the biggest pharmaceutical companies in the U.S. Not many people have access to this.”

Burgos is an internal medicine specialist and just one of several medical professionals involved with the research institute. He describes himself and his colleagues as intermediaries and data-collectors.

“When companies have medications that have proven to be safe for patients – and they’ve been targeted to treat very specific conditions – we begin to work with them. We have several ongoing studies.”

he positive energy that surrounds Dr. Marius Ruja is infective and is what he is all about. Because April is our doctor issue, I thought El Paso should get to know Ruja

On the surface, he is a Chiropractor, having graduated from Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa – where chiropractic got its start. He greets each coming patient with a familiarity, as if they’ve been long time friends, and even talked to me with an informal easiness. As we started our conversation – because it was more of an open conversation than an interview – Ruja spoke to me about his childhood, his home and his intent and purpose in life.

A theme and atmosphere of pure energy unfolded, as did his story.

The person that we become is often affected by our childhood and upbringing. Ruja was born in communist Romania, leaving with his parents at the young age of eight seeking political asylum. “I lived in a border town much like Juárez and [El Paso]. We escaped together and we spent two years in a political refugee camp in Austria. We were turned down in three countries because of quotas. We came out of a different issue, but I see the same kind of energy with [the Syrian refugees in the news].” His family decided to move to Brooklyn, New York. Jumping into ESL classes, he quickly had to learn English, mentioning that during the learning process a lot of energy was felt when he couldn’t verbally express himself. “You either smile or you don’t,” he said, discussing how energy can still be felt with people. They all lead a life full of positive energy and embody what they preach. “We walk the walk and talk the talk,” jokes Ruja when he tells me that his wife has had all five of their children with water birth. All five kids are incredibly talented, athletic and eager self-learners.

But his home and his family extend beyond being blood-related. “I hate saying foster. I remember our first one was a 12-year-old, so we went through foster parenting classes.

We opened our home and family to extended family. That word “fostering” is not the right word. It’s not the right energy.” His family and home has opened up to eight boys, all from different countries – seven of those eight have now graduated from universities.

“Our children grew up with them. It’s about all of us. It’s not about me. It’s about the environment and the community,” Ruja says.

And his words are sincere as he adds, “We have so much to share with our children, all

Is life really about stuff?” He then shares a story with me about growing up in Brooklyn, a story that says a lot about the kind of person he is, why he puts out into the world what he does. “I remember when I was younger – I was an only child – I hated eating alone. I would go to somebody else’s house or invite some one else to my house and just share that. Just that energy, I liked that.”

Dr. Manuel Aranda, Jr. A proud Sun City native with an uncommonly lengthy tenure in emergency medicine, Dr. Manuel Aranda, Jr. has worked in virtually every ER in town.

A Coronado High School graduate, he attended the California Institute of Technology for a B.S. in Molecular Biology, followed up by an M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco in 1994. Dr. Michael DeLuca Dr. Michael DeLuca, a cardiologist, has spent the last 13 years practicing medicine in El Paso. He grew up in Kingwood, Texas and went to college at North Texas State University. He spent his first two years of medical school in Budapest, Hungary and spent two years of medical school in London, England, followed by four years of internal medicine training in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. DeLuca also spent four years of interventional cardiology training at Scott and White hospital in Temple Texas.

He began his career in the 70s as an Air Force Medic, which at that time required a two-year certification program, and later went on to complete more schooling to be in the profession he is in now. His daily schedule involves lesser time in the clinic and more time assisting the physicians in surgery, whether it be harvesting veins for conduits, resolving perioperative issues, or performing care before and after surgery. “I love my job or I would not have done it for the last 20 years. We as PAs are involved in so many aspects of medicine. “I had no idea,” he said with a smile as he strapped on his helmet and choice of riding gear. “I have never been given a surprise like this.”

Viva Power Sports hosted the wish reveal party on February 11 where friends, family and employees gathered around as Lennie took his first ride in his new vehicle. Lennie also got to celebrate with pizza, cake and balloons.

“Looking at his face when he smashed on that gas pedal speaks volumes,” Viva Power Sports General Manager, Scott Turcotte, said.

“This is way bigger than Viva Power Sports, this is about giving a glimmer of happiness to somebody in need of that happiness.”

In today’s digitally driven culture there are countless websites, TV shows and apps, which are geared toward promoting an overall healthier mind and body. While many of these outlets can prove helpful, you must stop to realize that

There have been many studies and publications which show how meditation can help a variety of things such as reducing stress and anxiety, promoting a healthy lifestyle, and experiencing a better sense of well-being One of the best things about meditation is that it allows for flexibility. Meditating does not have to be a complicated or rigid process of committing yourself to one hour daily to benefit its rewards. Try taking a five-minute break regularly at your computer.

Simply close your eyes and take several deep breaths inward and outwardly counting slowly to five with each time. You can also say positive affirmations such as: “I am healthy, I am at peace, and I am centered.” As you breathe out, release negativity by saying: “I release my tension, I release the stress in my shoulders.” If a thought comes to mind about tasking or projects and deadlines, tell that thought to go away – only focus on your breathing and the calmness of where you are at that moment. You may even place your palms flat on your thighs or slip your shoes off and put your feet to the floor as a way to ground yourself.

TCM: Since you were supported by one of Mexico’s most famous artists, what do you do to support other up and coming artists?

S: I have my own foundation “Fundacion Sebastian” where I promote talent, up and coming and artists that are already established. I often buy work for the foundation and exhibit it on the premises; it’s almost like following a chain of support, and we are all here for the art.

S: No, every art piece is a story and takes a place in history. They all required love, passion,

BALANCING THE FOUR ELEMENTS FOR HEALTH AND WELLBEING M | By: MICHELLE CROMER |

My grandmother, like other American Indians not only honored the four elements every day, they prayed to the four directions every night. Kabalistic Jews spoke of the four worlds. The Hawaiian Hula culture immersed itself in the four elements. Buddhists wrote the Four Noble Truths. There are four ruling archangels, four cardinal directions, four earth seasons, four times of day, etc. Author Debra Silverman in her book, “The Missing Element” writes, “Egyptians passed onto us their version of the Four Elements, which is steeped in astrology – the oldest science on earth. These people honored the land they lived on – not because it was a good idea, but because they were dependent on it for their survival and they had to pay attention.

They operated with rocks in their pockets and wisdom in their hearts.”

In many ancient civilizations, these four elements are regarded as the foundation of the whole body, part of every basic principle about healing the body and the foundation of life.

The constant interaction of the four elements gives rise to the processes of the human body and is the impetus behind physical life, making the concept of keeping all of them balanced important. Of course during the normal course of one’s life, the elements go in and out of balance in a continuously changing state of health or disease.

EARTH ELEMENT

Substances that are solid can be said to have the qualities of the Earth element. Solid qualities of the body that are of the Earth element include skin, muscle, tendon, bone, viscera, fat, and other solid organs.

Imbalance of the Earth element would manifest as symptoms of the organs associated with the Earth element. Some examples would be: skin disease, bone disease, tumors, and other “solid” disorders.

WATER ELEMENT Substances that are liquid are of the Water element. Liquid qualities of the body that are of the Water element include blood, eyes, phlegm, saliva, lymph, urine, semen, other liquids of the body.

Imbalances of the Water element would manifest as symptoms of the organs associated with the Water element such as blood disease, eye disorders, renal disease, venereal disease, bladder or urinary tract infection or stones, and any diseases manifesting in abnormal urine or other liquid discharge.

AIR ELEMENT Substances that have movement are of the Air element. Moving qualities of the body include respiration, digestion, and excretion, motion of the limbs and joints, sexuality, aging.

Imbalance of the Air element would manifest as symptoms of the organs associated with the Air element such as pneumonia, cough, mucous congestion, tuberculosis, bronchitis, other respiratory infections, fainting, dizziness, and arthritis. The Air element is considered to be the most important element in promoting mobility, strength, longevity and vigor.

FIRE ELEMENT Substances that have heat are of the Fire element. Warm/hot qualities of the body include body temperature, circulatory system, and metabolism.

Imbalance of the Fire element primarily manifests as diseases of the Fire element organs: he heart and circulatory system.

The easiest way to balance these elements is to simply to expose yourself to the elements in their primitive forms. Put your hands into dirt, feeling the coolness, heaviness and solidity of the ancient earth element. Take a bath or visit a stream to feel the flowing wetness of water. Feel the breeze blowing on your skin and get in touch with the change and lightness of air. Turn on your stove or make a campfire and connect with the heat and power of fire. In the world of fashion, most trends begin in Europe and progress to the States over time. At Market, I noticed firsthand the absence of the stiletto heel, with 70s inspired styles like thick, chunky, low heels leading the shoe trends. Next, a personal favorite of mine, sneakers! The Dior spring show featured their gals in sneakers and dresses, ushering in a fun, relaxed, easy vibe. Whether they’re Vans, Converse or Supergas, sneakers and tennis shoes are the must-have accessory going forward. Don’t think they are only appropriate with gym clothes; girls in the know are sporting them with skirts, dresses and even cool leather pants.

Come fall, the cool weather will make way for flared, high-waisted jeans, fun furry pieces (including faux!), and glitzy metallic accents that pay homage to the days of disco. Denim for all: whether it’s a denim jumpsuit, a denim skirt (yes, a denim skirt), or anything in between, denim is going on strong. Lines like Frame and RTA are new and upcoming, but right on point with their fits and quality. With denim skirts and sneakers back en vogue, chic dressing is really becoming more easy and relaxed.

After all, who doesn’t want to be comfortable and cute?

Last but definitely not least, distressed clothing is back with a vengeance. What we once thought looked raggedy is actually more expensive to make and customize, and the art of distressing is strategic and difficult to hand stitch and cut. The more worn the look, the better – holes, tears, paint and frayed detailing all add to the casual chic vibe that we can look forward to in spring and fall.

1. RED LIPS RULE THE RUNWAYS What do Snow White, Gwen Stefani and Taylor Swift all have in common? They all are known for a classic signature beauty look that also happens to be one of the biggest makeup trends for Spring/ Summer 2016. That’s right ladies, the red lip was all over the Paris runways for this year’s spring collections. This year’s red is a true candy-apple, bright version of the hue. While matte-finish crimson pouts still dominated the runways, designers also featured satin and glossy versions of the red lip as well. However, the commonality seen in all of these red lip looks was a clean, precise, defined application.

Pro tip: For the perfect red lip, line lips and fill them in completely with a true red lip liner (try MAC Lip Pencil in Cherry $16.50). Next, take your red lipstick (try NYX Round Lipstick in Snow White) and apply it with a square or flat edged liner brush so that you can make precise, clean lines around the mouth. Then take a concealer pencil (Try NYX Wonder Pencil) in a shade close to your skin tone and clean up and remove any imperfections or unevenness with the pencil. Tracing all around the mouth with the concealer pencil will keep your lipstick in place and prevent it from bleeding and feathering. BRONZED BEAUTIES While red lips paired with pale complexions were seemingly everywhere, equally as prevalent were tan, sun-kissed models that appeared to have just stepped off a cruise ship or a California beach. The rest of the makeup with this look was generally muted or done with complementary bronze, metallic and earth tones. 3. MEGA LASHES Bold, wispy, spidery, and yes, even clumpy lashes emerged as a big beauty trend on the spring/summer 2016 runways. Heavily mascaraed models sported both upper and lower extra long false individual lashes, as well as strips and partial strips of wispy, flirty false mink and human hair lashes. These looks often included heavily lined eyes paired with light or flesh toned matte lip shades. A fun trend also emerging for spring/summer 2016 are graphic drawnon lashes such as the ones seen on Gigi Hadid at the Jeremy Scott show. Makeup artist, Kabuki, painted on doll-like lashes around the model’s eyes with black eyeliner creating a standout look that everyone was talking about.

Unlike children’s coloring books, these books have thinner and smaller lines, which help to relieve stress (at least, according to the books). They come in different themes (cities, fashion, pets, mandalas, etc.). Get some wine and color away your worries!

Pom-Poms Michael Kors started to incorporate them in his bags, but pompoms are not only meant to be on keychains. Nowadays we see a ton of garments that have incorporated pom-poms. You can find them in blouses (courtesy of Topshop and Comme des Garçons) and even on snapbacks, for a cooler, modern look.

Some people think pom-poms might be childish, but they’re just fun (and very “In” right now).

Big Bloom Before you go all Meryl Streep in The “Devil Wears Prada” and make a sarcastic comment on how florals for spring is a groundbreaking idea, hear me out. I’m all for florals in spring, that’s what spring is all about! But we have to stay away from grandma floral prints and go for big bold flowers. Big flowers on a printed skirt, or a modern take on a floral print in a button up shirt, there’s a lot of garments in which you can incorporate this trend without looking like wallpaper from an old house. Go big and don’t be scared of flowers. Jill Stuart and MILLY have wonderful examples of this type of print, or if you want something more abstract but with the same appeal go for a marble floral print, or something more psychedelic.

Floral Numbers We’ve all seen them, those “jersey” inspired t-shirts with a floral background and huge numbers in the center of it. There’s a variation of them; numbers and the name of a city, some flowers with a bandana design, flowers inside the numbers, or the whole t-shirt is floral. The important thing is: they’re not in style anymore. The Super Bowl already passed and so should this trend. They’ve been remade into a bunch of different styles, for both girls and guys, each as tired as the last one. Get rid of them, because if you’re still wearing them, you’re not the real MVP.

Keep the change Unless you’re still an avid shopper at Hot Topic (and if you’re over 18 years old, you really shouldn’t be) there’s no excuse for you to be the owner of a Velcro wallet. They’re as ugly as they are durable, and let’s be honest; Velcro wallets are for a person that tends to drop everything that’s inside a regular wallet. They are noisy when you open them and nobody wants to see a grown man paying on a date and taking his card out of a Velcro wallet. If you’re not a kid, get a decent looking wallet and stay away from that sticky mess.

f you watched the UTEP women’s basketball team this season, you witnessed one of its star players make national headlines and break new ground. But in the future, you may see Cameasha Turner sitting on the Supreme Court bench as one of its Justices. The senior guard and criminal justice major

has overcome many barriers, including discouragement and disbelief. Those feelings affected recruitment efforts.

“At first I thought I’m not good enough to go to college, I’m not good enough to go play [Division 1] basketball,” she said. “Look at me – poor community, nobody in my family went to college, nobody in my family played sports – football, baseball, nothing.”

Turner attributes her success on the UTEP women’s basketball team to focus and hard work over the years. She first realized in 7th grade that she was pretty good at basketball, but her collegiate journey required balance, dedication and desire.

complained, but I also knew that I had to do the extra steps and not make excuses,” she said. “A lot of people where I come from, they make excuses about why they didn’t make it. ‘Oh my parents didn’t have enough money and this and that,’ and I just knew once you got God on your side and once you got the effort you put in, just understand that it will happen for you. You just can’t give up, you just got to be pushing and pushing.”

Turner’s lessons learned and aspiration to excel have helped her welcome her role as a mentor to younger players on the team and have her determined to dedicate her career, after basketball, to the criminal justice system.

One way to think of zen is this: a total state of focus that incorporates a total togetherness of body and mind. Zen is a way of being. It also is a state of mind. Zen involves dropping illusions and seeing things without distortion created by your own thoughts.
