Influence
Nestled amongst the natural beauty of our majestic Franklin Mountains, stands a gorgeous home that was built almost a quarter of a century ago. However, nothing about it is reminiscent of the era during which it was built. In fact, the house would be completely unrecognizable to the original builders and homeowners. What existed for years as a single story, 1980s house, is now a two-story, seventy-five hundred square foot Santa Barbara Spanish style masterpiece, all thanks to the vision of the homeowners combined with the immeasurable talent of one local interior designer.

The Spanish Panache is Apparent Ever ywhere When the homeowners expressed their vision to Anne Steele of Anne Steele Custom Interiors, they knew that they were in love with the Santa Barbara style, which is a Spanish colonial inspired architecture. Together, the homeowners and Mrs. Steele took a trip to Santa Barbara for inspiration and to do some hands-on research. During the first phase of the remodel, the exterior of the house was completely changed to reflect the Spanish flair. It wasn’t long before the home began to take the look of a hacienda with its white stucco walls, traditional red tile roof, carved heavy wooden front doors and detailed iron work adorning the windows, doors and gates. The interior of the home was completely transformed as well with the addition of dark wooden beams on the ceiling. Every wine enthusiast knows the importance of wine cellars, and this home caters to the husband of the home with a hand crafted, functional 650 bottle wine cellar featuring custom dark wood and exposed brick. The interior of the home continued with the white wall theme, detailed by beautiful arched heavy carved wooden doors that instantly grab your attention,

while staying true to their traditional Spanish design style. All of the arches as well as the doors in this home were custom in design as well as stain, done specifically for the home owner by “Doors El Paso Wood Products.” Although the home was completely redone, there were some features from the original construction that were able to maintain their place. One such structure is the double fireplace warming both the formal dining room as well as the formal living room, one of five fireplaces in the home. The double fireplace was simply given a makeover to fit the updated style while maintaining one of the original structures of the home. The kitchen became a magnificent yet functional space with an enormous custom granite center island, double oven and breakfast bar. The wall situated behind the stove boasts a beautiful mosaic backsplash designed by artist Jose Blanco of Atalica Arts, depicting this very same home as it looked upon completion of the first remodel, along with the mountains and surrounding foliage.

The journey began again a few years after the initial remodel, when the homeowners once again sought out Mrs. Steele to take their vision even further. They decided to add a second story to their home—a decision that Mrs. Steele says completely took their home to the next level literally and figuratively, perfectly tying in and encapsulating the Santa Barbara look they were going for. With the addition of the second story came an exquisite staircase featuring true reproductions of original 1940s Santa Barbara tile, making it one of the main focal points of the home. The tiles are colorful

and display detailed patterns that are perfectly accentuated by the wooden trim. This winsome staircase has custom iron railings, a style that the home owner fell in love with when visiting a staircase railing in Santa Barbara. The spotlight of the second story falls on the gym. It is a personal fitness center with an impressive amount of square footage, with enough room for various exercise machines and free weights. In addition to the workout facility, the upstairs also added two large bedrooms and two bathrooms to the house.

This home is truly a work of art. Its beautiful and elegant style still exudes a welcoming comfort and coziness. The flow and layout of the rooms encourages community and togetherness. A
fter purchasing an investment property two years ago, artful-eyed power couple Steve Santamaria and Isha Rogers attended a party where they were met with the opportunity to work together on a project for the second time. None other than our prized U.S. Representative, Beto O’Rourke, approached them with an exciting offer.
I hear you’re buying apartment complexes,” he said. The rest is history, as Santamaria and Rogers purchased what used to be Imperial Arms from O’Rourke and his mother, without hesitation. They changed the name to the St. Roger’s Apartments and soon realized that their new building needed far less work than their previous property endeavors. Walk by the revamped St. Rogers Apartments on Stanton Street and you will see they look somewhat like the dormitories of an Ivy League school. It’s a brown brick, three-story building, with a lush courtyard in the center that Santamaria says will have a water feature. High gates guard the premises now, painted “St. Rogers green”—a signature color chosen by the two. A camera system with a total of nine cameras was also installed to guarantee a safe, secure quality of life for tenants. Walking inside, you will see the remodeled kitchen floors, countertops and new appliances added. It’s an exciting moment to catch a restored historic trolley pass right outside your window to make its daily nearby stop. “It’s in a great area. You have the hospital, the university, you have this new trolley line going downtown and coming from downtown, so if you want to go to Kern you get on right here. You have Kern, Tom Lea Park, the new bike lane, everything is happening right here.” Says Santamaria.

Another project in the lowest level of the building was to brighten up a boarded washroom. The couple removed all of the wood boards from the windows and re-designed the space to create their signature ambiance of open and light-filled rooms. They added frosted glass to the windows and a glass block sidewall. Exposed piping in the new laundry room was covered and cameras were installed so guests feel at ease when entering the lower level of the building. Santamaria and Rogers don’t believe in quarter machines either, they offer free use of washing machines to all renters. A St. Rogers staple when it comes to redesigning a space is “home shopping.” On the first floor, an apartment used as an Airbnb holds work from the couple’s very own art collection. The affordable AirBnb is decorated with contemporary furniture from West Elm, and has a pleasant view of the courtyard.

Steeped in art and history, it is no wonder why tenants are enchanted by the St. Rogers mystique. “According to Adair Margo, the foremost expert on Tom Lea, Tom Lea lived here.” Says Santamaria. Tom Lea— muralist, novelist, and WWII correspondent from El Paso—is believed to have lived at the apartments and is said to have painted a portrait of his wife Sarah out in the courtyard. Inspired by the history of their building and love of art, Santamaria and Rogers are currently searching for work from El Paso artists to fill the bare walls. The couple wishes to purchase nine pieces: three from each artist, and they plan on adding a plaque on each floor that reads the artist’s name and information, so tenants and visitors can enjoy and purchase the art.
This isn’t the only place you will find art in the building. Their very own PEN/Faulkner Award-winning author, Benjamin Alire Saenz, resides at the St. Rogers Apartments, and was given the first floor to use as an art gallery. On the second floor you’ll find work by photographer and City Representative, Peter Svarzbein.

ost of us get home every day and pull into the garage ready to step inside the house and relax after a long day. However, what almost nobody does is pull into the garage at the end of the day and think about how badly we need to organize it. The typical garage for nearly everyone is a free-for-all and catch-all space. Below are some suggestions to keep your garage clean and organized so it does not impact the energy of other spaces in your home.
Attached garages are considered a part of the home and depending on where the garage is located, this may affect the energy area of the octagon known as a “Bagua.” Here are the major examples of garage locations, please note this is looking at the residence from the street towards the home: Front right side of residence is related to travel and our interactions with others who are helpful. This section is of great significance both personally and professionally. If your garage is on the front right side of your home and is cluttered, it can create excuses for being unable to travel.
Front left side of the residence is related to the higher learning or knowledge sector of our lives. Disorganization located here makes it challenging to focus on studies or having time to obtain a higher degree of education. Back right side of the home is the relationship sector. This may create conflict and discord with a spouse or partner, making it difficult to have good friendships. Back left side of the home represents wealth and prosperity. Having an unorganized garage here can hinder our finances—think paying off debts or saving money. A garage door connected to the kitchen can negatively affect health, as the car can carry noxious fumes and pollution directly into your food and body. A remedy for this is to place plants in the kitchen to promote healthy Chi. Two-story homes that have a bedroom above the garage may find it difficult to sleep at night because of the energy of the vehicle inside the garage. If this is the case, try moving the bedroom and instead, make this room ideal for say a home office, a craft room or a gym as it will actually aid in productivity. If you are entering into your home from the garage, the condition of the garage strongly affects your personal energy. If it has a messy view, is disorganized and dirty, this can leave you and the residents feeling frustrated and cranky for no good reason. It is also considered to be negative entering into the residence from the garage because it is considered to be the “servant” entrance, which can hinder our job performance or promotions. It is always best to enter the home through the front door as this is considered the “mouth” of the residence. Entering from the front door feeds Chi energy into the home which is a vital force in our lives. Organizing and cleaning up the garage can have a positive influence on your life. Buy large storage bins to store specific items like sports equipment, holiday decorations and memorabilia. Throw away items that are not used or donate them. Sprucing up this area will have a positive impact on your life.

W
inter is undoubtedly one of the most exciting times of the year for interior design and decoration. The change of season fuels our desire to look at upcoming trends, and the onset of the winter markets has both designers and vendors vying for our attention with their products and ideas. We are seeing several trends from 2018 hanging on and carrying over into the new year, while there are some refreshing surprises pushing us out of our comfort zones. Here are six of my favorite trends to look for in the coming year.
Jewel Tones Synonymous with style and luxury, the use of gem inspired colors continues to mesmerize both designers and consumers. Emerald greens and ruby reds are still popular, while rich purples are finding their way into the mix. As this trend continues to gain popularity, people are becoming more comfortable with the variety of ways in which these bold hues are being used. If you are curious about using jewel tones, but are not ready to pull the trigger on an all out commitment, start with accessories and go from there. Throw pillows, rugs and decorative accents are a great way to discover which colors inspire you. Once your confidence is up, move into furniture, wall colors and window coverings. Don’t forget, as you introduce jewel tones, just like with jewelry, metallic elements are the perfect compliment. WABI-SABI Wabi-sabi is the Japanese art of finding beauty in imperfection. There are many discussions on whether Wabi-sabi is truly a design trend, or more of a guiding principle on how to live. Regardless of where your opinion falls, there are a few fundamental practices that characterize this style—the use of natural materials, simplicity of style and embracing imperfections. Consider taking a step outside the norm and shopping for your design elements away from big-box stores. Flea markets, craft shows, and independently-owned shops are all viable alternatives. Keep in mind, however, that there is a difference between embracing the essence of Wabi-sabi and losing your design to day-to-day clutter. Where that line falls will be personal for each of us, but you’ll want to be sure that aesthetic choices always remain purposeful.

BRONZE As we say goodbye to brass, the overused “go-to” metal of 2018, we welcome its refreshing replacement—bronze! With a much warmer finish, this metallic trend has a more natural feel. Bronze has a strong stand-alone quality, however also mixes well with other metals, which is always chic. Accent furniture, lighting and accessories are the areas we will see this metallic maverick have its strongest hold.

STATEMENT STORAGE Gone are the days of sacrificing style for function. Versatile pieces like buffets, credenzas and sideboards are expanding beyond media and dining rooms for creative placement throughout the home. Also, storage benches, once limited to the foot of a bed, are finding their way to surprising spots, like under windows or as accent pieces used almost anywhere. Amidst the growing desire for high-end organization in personal spaces, a desire for things (and life) to feel pulled together is also on the rise. Stylishly controlling clutter is a great step in that direction.
OVERSIZED FLORAL PRINTS Though some incarnation of the floral print always seems to be on trend, the forecast for 2019 is that we will see this tried and true design staple in largescale, bigger than life patterns. From wall coverings to upholstered furniture, draperies and textiles to bespoke painted furniture, eye popping floral designs will have their place in the coming year. Rather than the traditionally feminine look associated with florals, they will feel especially fresh and more interesting, styled in a casual bohemian way. Juxtaposing florals with organic textures and neutral palettes evokes a new kind of appealing elegance.
BLACK Classic, ageless, sophisticated and versatile, black is the color that will be having a Renaissance in the coming year. Though top designers caution when using black in design, its popularity will be prevalent at both market and marketplace. When used properly, designing with black has yielded visual masterpieces in the interior design world. Once reserved for primarily Asian, minimalist, contemporary and industrial design styles, it has now transcended into the palettes of almost all design themes. Wall color and coverings, window treatments, upholstered furniture, decorative accessories and appliances are just a few of the areas we can expect to see the impact of this bold hue. Look for mixes of sheens, including light absorbing matte black and dynamic, high-gloss shines, used separately and in concert with each other. 54

People find themselves traveling to far west Texas for any number of reasons. Maybe you are sent for work, or a particular convention. You and a close group of friends might venture out to take in the much talked about music scene and cuisine. You might find peace in chasing the past, so you plan a trip to learn all about the history of this beautiful city and its surrounding area. Whatever event that brings you our way, one thing is certain. If you’re not fortunate enough to have family with a guest room who call El Paso home, you are going to need a spot to shower, shave and get some shut eye. Across the street from Southwest University Park (home to the El Paso Chihuahuas), there’s a new kid in town. fresh brewed coffee and cinnamon seems to surround most things now—tired trees with changing leaves set the tone for comfort. I thrive in this setting. I want to be more active with the colder weather and welcoming auras of heated homes and shops, but to stay active we have to eat good. I want something that is light and will also fill me up, I want “fall notes” that don’t come with its weight. So, we’re diving into breakfast. It’s the most important meal of the day and we have to do it right. Chia seeds are new to me, but I researched, I “trial and error-ed” and ate stuff that wasn’t so awesome. I did it all so I could give you this recipe for an amazing chia pudding that’s made with whole coconut milk, giving you the healthy creamy fats that will fill your stomach and keep you going. Smashed blueberries with a hint of lemon to bring a sweet tartness will cut through any heaviness and brighten your palette, keeping you awake. I’ve come across Prickly Pear Jam from a dear friend’s garden, it was a breath of fresh air that I will be constantly bothering her for year-round. Top all this with a fall inspired granola, packed with your gold standard of fall flavors—cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, etc. The toppings/ fruits/jams are all so customizable that this can easily become your own creation you’ll have on hand for every season.
Combine all ingredients together in a medium mixing bowl. Let sit 5 minutes, stir again to redistribute any stuck chia seeds. Cover and refrigerate for 4 hours or overnight.

Break up fresh blackberries with a fork until chunky, add lemon juice, stir to incorporate, cover, and refrigerate.

Melt butter in medium pan on medium high heat, add sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, half of spice mixture, 3 tablespoons coconut flake and pistachio.

Stir and cook until seeds turn golden brown, about 5 minutes, add brown sugar and honey, cook for another 2-4 minutes until mixture begins to bubble. Remove from
