McLaughlin pleads not guilty A

58-year-old man has appeared at Derry Magistrate’s Court charged with the murder of 35-year-old Barry McCrory in the city.

Kieran Edward Joseph McLaughlin of 60, Elaghmore Park in Derry was charged with the murder of Barry McCrory on October 10.

When charged McLaughlin relied ‘not guilty this is a media smear campaign.

He was also charged with possessing a weapon namely a shotgun with intent to endanger life or property on October 16.

McLaughlin, dressed in T-shirt and jeans, appeared unshaven.

He was flanked by two police officers while in the dock and handcuffed.

McLaughlin spoke briefly when asked to confirm his identity stating ‘I can confirm yes’.

When the charges were put to him he replied that he understood.

A detective constable Derek McLaughlin said he could connect McLaughlin to the charges.

Defence solicitor Mr. Kevin Casey asked the detective could he confirm that there was no terrorist connection.

DC McLaughlin confirmed this was so.

There was no application for bail and District Judge Barney McElholm remanded McLaughlin in custody to appear by video link on November 14.

There was a heavy security presence around the court and when McLaughlin was driven in a small crowd of supporters cheered him.

As he was being brought from the court immediately after the hearing McLaughlin gave a thumbs up to them.

There were no incidents.

The Mayor of Derry Councillor Martin Reilly today offered his congratulations to all involved in achieving the Award at a prestigious event this weekend in Cleethorpes, Lincolnshire.

Derry were awarded a Gold Award in their category at the UK wide event hosted by BBC broadcaster Bob Flowerdew in Saturday’s ceremony, in which a number of Ulster town’s including Scarva, Ahoghill, Bangor and Hillsborough were also celebrating as the region picked up five awards in total.

Mayor Cllr Martin Reilly said he was delighted the city gained further recognition with this award.

“This award is acknowledgement of the hard work of Derry City Council’s Ground Maintenance and Street Cleansing Sections who work extremely hard year round to provide the eye catching, vibrant horticultural displays which have created a colourful, attractive and clean streetscape around the City, and is particularly significant this year as we celebrate our year as City of Culture.

“Formally recognising how fantastic our city looks, this Gold Award further signifies the wide-

spread consensus from both our citizens and visitors that the Pride in our City Initiative is clearly working.

“After many years of competing at a national level, it is momentous that 2013 is the year this is formally recognised and the Gold Award is well deserved.”

Picking up the award for the city was Derry City Council’s Ground Maintenance Manager, Danny McCartney and Sean Carr, Chair of Environmental Services.

“We are still overwhelmed with the news and delighted to receive this recognition that confirms the regeneration of the city has been acknowledged with this level of a national award” said Danny McCartney after the event.

“It was obvious in August when we hosted the visiting Britain in Bloom judges in the city that they were impressed with the placement and design of the displays.

“Commenting during the ceremony the judges made reference to the city as one of the Best Tourist Destinations in the world this year, and confirmed that we deserved this accolade.

“I want to thank my dedicated team at Derry City Council and all those who participated on the judging day whose help and support in the overall Pride in Our City campaign each year has led to this Gold Award.

Police Notes workshops ahead of Halloween Ball

or anyone planning to go to the Shapeshifters Ball at the Guildhall on Halloween night, there is one more chance to avail of the opportunity to design their own costume by attending the last one of the Shapeshifters workshops that are taking place in the run up to the event to assist in designing and creating your own couture.

The last workshop takes place

this Friday October 25 at the Cottage in the Craft Village.

olice in Foyle are appealing for information in relation to the following incidents.

Officers are asking for witnesses to a reported hit and run at the pedestrian crossing at Strand Road close to the Centra forecourt around 7am on October 15th. A woman reported that a black Audi A4 with a DL number plate ran the red lights and knocked her to the ground.

Detectives are investigating four burglaries in Edgewater, Knockdara Park and Rock Park between October 14th

and 17th.

Groarty Road Primary School

Parents and staff call for action over speed

taff at a Derry Primary School are concerned for the safety of pupils due to the fact there are no speed restrictions on the road outside.

Groarty Road Primary School is situated on the Coshquin Road which has a 60 mph speed limit.

Staff at the school said they are concerned that the children coming and leaving the school could be at risk from drivers speeding on the popular back road.

Dan Donnelly a parent with two children at the school said he had been in contact with all the main parties in the city to try and get something down about the situation before it was too late.

He said: “We have been in contact with Road Service to try and have the speed on the road reduced.

“The Road Service carried out a survey in January and found that some 1100 cars a day used the road and they said that the

average speed was over 29 mph.

“I cannot think of any other school in the city where there is not some form of speed restriction.

“Even Culmore Primary School which s on a main road has a speed restriction so why can’t we have one at our school.”

He added: “In some of the correspondence we have had we have been told that there is nothing that can be done as the road is classed as a country road but a short distance away

from the school is the Skeoge bypass and this is restricted to 50 mph.”

Mr. Donnelly said he had been in touch with the PSNI this week and they had advised that both parents and staff at the school should contact the Roads Service to ask for the survey to be carried out again.

He said: “This is exactly what we will be doing.

“We will be calling on the Road Service to look at the situation outside this school before there is a tragedy.”

A member of staff said: “We are very concerned at the speed at which some drivers come down this road.

“We are situated on a very narrow road but one that is used quite a lot by people as a shortcut.

“There is no parking facilities for parents leaving children off at the school and the road is

Hundreds sign up for biggest Carnival finale yet

T

he countdown to this year’s Banks of the Foyle Hallowe’en Carnival has begun with the official launch of the city’s biggest and most colourful celebration yet, the Carnival Parade.

Hundreds of local children are currently taking part in workshops across the city creating weird and wonderful costumes and props to light up the night for a fantastic feast of festival fun at the Curious Carnival of Lost Souls Parade on Hallowe’en night.

The Parade workshops are now in full swing, and according to Amanda-Jane Prow from the North West Carnival Initiative, even the parents are getting into the Halloween spirit.

“We are so excited about this year’s carnival parade,” she said. “With the support of the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, we have been able to engage artistic director Kevin O’Neil to support the delivery of a highly themed carnival pageant which will see a very curious circus rolling into town.

“We have been working with over 600 participants drawn from local arts, drama and community groups from right across the city as well as professional carnival artists and organisations.

“This renowned festival promises to be bigger than ever this year as the city continues its celebration as the City of Culture, a year which has propelled Derry~Londonderry onto an international stage.

“Audiences should expect to see all sorts of curious sights and sounds, acrobats and dancing troupes, strange creatures and mysterious contraptions, and music that send tingles up your spine. Listen if you dare to the clattering of bones as hundreds of soul’s dance their way into the darkness of all hallows night.”

“A visit to the city this Halloween guarantees an unforgettable experience with an extensive and varied week long programme of events and activity to suit the entire family.”

Over the next few weeks the workshops can anticipate a hive of activity across schools and community centres as children get creative making lanterns, costumes and props.

Free fun at St Columb’s Haunted Hall this Hallowe’en

I

t’s one of the city’s most iconic buildings but over Hallowe’en St Columb’s Hall will be overrun with mini-monsters and tiny terrors as the kids take over for two days of freaky fun.

It will be a magical mid-term for children in the city this year as the Haunted Hall hosts a series of spooky shows for even the littlest devils. These special performances will run throughout October 30 and 31, and with scary stories and eerie entertainment to suit all ages, there really will be fun for all the family. Parents will be even more delighted to find out that all the shows are totally free.

The events are being run by Derry City Council, and speaking on behalf of the council’s Economic Development Department, Linda Williams said it was a great way to get into the Hallowe’en spirit.

She said: “Hallowe’en is such a

magical time for children, and the St Columb’s haunted hall is a fantastic venue to host some special events for kids of all ages. With so much already being spent on costumes and trick or treating, this is a great way to treat them to an exciting afternoon without having to spend a fortune.

“And with shows for children as young as two, all the family can get involved - I would encourage everyone to come along and enjoy some spine-tingling tales, magic and mayhem.”

Start the afternoon with the Once Upon a Time Storytelling session, fairy tale fun and fantasy for kids aged between 2-6.

The show begins at 1pm and run until 1.40pm, with repeat performances at 2.45pm and 4.15pm.

At 1.30pm follow the charming story of the beautiful Butterfly and the creepy Caterpillar. They will bewitch their younger viewers with song and dance, as they tell the story of how this pair of opposites becomes friends after a birthday disaster. This is the perfect

omen across Derry are being invited to take part in an exciting three day celebratory festival titled Women of the World, taking place for the first time in the city this November as part of the City of Culture Programme for 2013.

The festival features a free jampacked programme of debates, workshops, music, comedy and performance celebrating the achievements of women, and exploring the issues and challenges that they face in everyday life.

The events take place from November 8-10 in the Playhouse and are delivered in partnership with the Southbank Centre, whose artistic director Jude Kelly first staged WOW in London in 2011 to coincide with the centenary of International Women’s day.

The dynamic programme addresses numerous themes and issues affecting women of all ages from teenagers to pensioners, and this year will have a distinctly Derry flavour, as programmer for the Culture Company Claire McDermott explained: “We are absolutely delighted to be hosting WOW this year, and opening it up as a free event to all local women, who play such a valuable role in our city.”

“I believe that the contribution made by women here is phenomenal and this is a unique chance to recognise and celebrate that. This event is about

opening up conversations about the issues that affect us most, building relationships, and sharing the stories and experiences that set us apart.

“While we aren’t afraid to explore some of the more challenging subjects, ultimately this event is about celebration, and it’s a great excuse for local women to get together to enjoy three days dedicated specially to them.”

The festival discusses everything from the heritage of the factory girls i n the city and the role women played in the keeping communities cohesive throughout the Troubles, to issues around ageing, breastfeeding, access to education and living in a society where we are judged by how we look. International issues are also tabled, with a keynote from Dr. Urvashi Sahni on how she is encouraging young women in India to carry the torch of empowerment into their communities using drama and film.

Friday November 9 is dedicated to younger audiences and open to local secondary schools. A special panel discussion chaired by Jude Kelly will run from 2.30pm – 3.30pm titled ‘Strong Female Role Models’ and will include panellists Shona McCarthy, CEO of Culture Company, and Aideen McGinley, BBC Trust.

The Festival opens to the general public on Saturday and Sunday for a series of debates, discussions and workshops.

Over 50 mentors will be on hand to share their insight and experience in a vast range of areas including science, enterprise, law, the arts, health, activ-

ism, education, politics, sport, fashion, finance and family life.

These speed mentoring sessions, based on speed dating, allow mentees to spend 15 minutes with each mentor, and mentors will be women and girls at all stages of their careers.

The shirt factory women are celebrated in a factory girl reunion on the afternoon of Saturday November 9th from 3pm – 4.30pm in the theatre space in the Playhouse. All factory girls are welcome to attend this event for a catch-up with each other and a chat about what life was like in the shirt factories.

One of the real highlights of the Festival this year is a visit by the Fabulous Fashionistas, Jean Woods and Sue Kreitzman, who will be sharing their inimitable passion for life, fun and fashion and helping redefine our perceptions of old age.

The festival is also delighted to welcome the award winning Malian singer and musician Rokia Traore, who will be bringing her unique and compelling brand of traditional music to the Nerve Centre, for a ticketed event on Friday November 9.

Tactical move by Derry boat in Clipper race

I

t has been a game of cat and mouse in the last 24 hours as the fleet shake up the leaderboard following tactics that have seen the twelve teams spread out on a wider course in the race to Cape Town.

Whilst the teams furthest to the north, Jamaica Get All Right and Qingdao remain at the bottom of the leaderboard and Team Garmin and PSP Logistics hold first and second place respectively. Those choosing to head further south in search for more favourable winds are hot on their heels and GREAT Britain and Invest Africa have stormed up the leaderboard into third and fourth place.

Tactics are being played out and the fleet is becoming more widely spread with GREAT Britain and Derry~Londonderry~Doire heading further south joiningInvest Africa in the hope of finding more favourable winds.

Switzerland skipper Vicky Ellis weighs up the tactics of the fleet: “It’s Saturday night, which party do we go to? Up in the north side of town is a party on offer, invites are out and all the cool people are going to be there, dress codes is smart (full mains and windseekers are in

order), big shades are on, the boats are kept flat so the cocktails don’t spill and the breeze is low so as not to blow the nice updos of the guests.

“The tempting invitation is on the pinboard but we could do the next option, the mainstream night out, Club Trades, it’s a big club and it’s just round the corner so close and easy. But the tunes are getting cheesy, the floor is a bit sticky and it’s slowing our moves. It’s all a bit too familiar and well, unexciting.

“Or we could go to the other side of town, the wrongside of town, there is a club called the Albatross club,the door is unmarked but every sailor

knows where to find it. The walls are dark, bar is high and the drinks are short. There is no dress code, just roll you sleeves up and put your reefs in. There is no guest list, you look the bouncer in the eye at 40 degrees south and he gives you a cold stare and says “enter if you dare”.

“As you step inside and start walking down the stairs away from the lights outside your heart pounds and you know it’s going to be a wild night!

Word on the street is that Invest Africa, GREAT Britain, Mission Performance and Derry~Londonderry~Doire are in there too so will look out for their glow-sticks on the dance floor.”

City gears up for Choral Festival

W

ith less than one week to go until the inaugural City of Derry International Choral Festival kicks off on October 24, festival organisers are finalising details of the four-day festival that will bring local, national and international choirs and artists to the city for a celebration of everything choral music has to offer.

While the festival offers opportunities for non-competitive participation in the Choral and Sacred Trails throughout the city and in workshops for young and adult singers, the competitive element of the festival will undoubtedly feature some of the stand-out choirs.

School and national competi-

tions will take place from Thursday through to Sunday (24th - 27th) and Saturday night, 26thOctober, will see seven choirs of international standing take to the stage of the newly refurbished St. Columb’s Hall to compete for the bespoke International Trophy, designed by local artist and sculptor Maurice Harron.

Maurice is an artist of international repute and has spent some time working on pieces that explore themes connected to social, historical and cultural identity.

He has specially designed the trophy for the inaugural festival using the symbol of the oak tree, synonymous with Derry, and the concept of multiple voices coming together to blend and intertwine. This stunning piece of artwork will return to the festival year after year as the bespoke and much sought-after perpetual International Trophy.

The International Competition will be adjudicated by a panel of choral directors from Norway and the UK. London chic comes to Shapeshifters Catwalk! in London has been confirmed as the guest judge.

Derry born designer Emma-Kate Cummings has been enjoying huge success in the fashion world since she graduated from the London College of Fashion.

She is continuing to grow her business as a Creative Tailor and is delighted to be returning to her home town to be part of this unique showcasing event.

t has been confirmed that a top London designer will be coming to Derry to act as guest judge for the Shapeshifters Catwalk Event which is due to be held on October 26.

A series of Shapeshifters Workshops under the creative directorship of local style guru Joe Carlin have been organised in the run up to the event in an effort to encourage people from the city and region to design their own costume and really get into the creative flair of creating an amazing outfit fit for the catwalk.

The event will be held in the Craft Village as part of the UK City of Culture and a top local designer who is currently making waves in the fashion world

The last workshop is scheduled to take place on Friday, October 25 between 4pm and 8pm at the Craft Cottage, Craft Village.

City hailed in US Press T

he prestigious Chicago Tribune newspaper in the United States has held Derry up as an example of what can be achieved contrasting the city to the scenes in Belfast.

In the paper’s Travel section the achievement’s of this year are hailed under the headline’ Northern Ireland’s second city tastes peace.’

The article notes: “-While cars burned on the streets of Belfast this summer in its worst year of rioting for a decade, Northern Ireland’s second city of Londonderry was filled with tourists as its once bitterly divided population celebrated a stunning rejuvenation.

“Some 40 years after Londonderry became the centre of the “Troubles” when British troops shot dead 13 people at a civil rights protest on what became known as Bloody Sunday, Catholics and Protestants

watched calmly as some of the city’s most entrenched taboos were broken.

“The transformation offers a striking example for the British province of how sectarian enmities can be overcome and holds lessons in particular for Belfast, a city where entrenched divisions have done much to undermine the progress made since a 1998 peace deal intended to end the long years of violence.

“It would be hard to destabilize this city at this point,” said Willie Temple, a pro-British Protestant in Londonderry who became an activist to defend his community at the height of the unrest in the 1970s. “People have seen the benefits of peace.”

There has been tension in the city since Protestant settlers arrived from England and Scotland in the 17th century, adding the London prefix to the Gaelic name Derry as they consolidated their hold on the north of the country.

Catholics have continued to use the name Derry to show their resistance to British rule, but even that dispute has faded in recent years and many Protestants now use Derry in casual conversation.”

The article continues: “This summer, the army barracks that once struck fear into nationalists became the headquarters of Londonderry’s year as UK City of Culture, hosting an Irish dancing marathon.

“The annual August parade to mark a Protestant victory in a 17th century battle once sparked riots, but passed without trouble for the first time as tourists took pictures. Its pipers later opened a traditional Irish music festival.

“I don’t think this could have happened even five years ago,” said John Lafferty, a retired supermarket worker walking past the scene of the Bloody Sunday shootings, now a tourist attraction. “There is a different mindset now.”

Although it is not without

some inaccuracies: “The city of 100,000 has received tens of millions of pounds of investment from the government and the European Union to redevelop the barracks, spruce up its squares and build a bridge across the river than separates the Catholic and Protestant communities.”

“The secret is direct dialogue, people talking rather than organizations talking,” said Temple, the Protestant community worker.

The writer then notes: “The scenes in Londonderry have contrasted with Belfast’s year of riots, sparked by a decision to restrict the flying of the British flag from City Hall, which enraged young pro-British Protestants.

“”Belfast could learn from this city,” said Michael Doherty, an important player in the intercommunity talks from the Catholic side in Londonderry.

“They haven’t given themselves the opportunity to build trust.”

“They rioted again at the time of traditional Protestant marches in the summer, some of which were blocked by authorities. Irish nationalists responded by staging their own pitched battles with police.

“But Londonderry has natural advantages over Belfast, whose much larger population of 280,000 is spread across a patchwork of Catholic and Protestant areas.

When a similar situation gripped Londonderry in the late 1990s, city businessmen stepped in to hold talks, building the foundations of a crosscommunity infrastructure.

“A census last year showed Belfast had a small Catholic majority for the first time, heightening fears among Protestants that their political power is waning.

“In Londonderry, by contrast,

the Protestants have long accepted their role as a minority of around 25 percent, which activists say has increased pressure on them to compromise.

“But as ever in Northern Ireland, there is a complication. As former leaders of the nationalist Irish Republican Army have increased their cooperation with pro-British politicians, a small minority of so called “dissident” militants has emerged, with the Londonderry region as a stronghold.

“There have been several bomb threats against the police and the organizers of the City of Culture, but the security forces have succeeded in preventing any attacks.

“There is a severe threat in Northern Ireland,” said regional police chief Stephen Martin. “(But) this has been a tremendous year for the city.”

Mayor welcomes Nigerian Visitors in Fight Against Malaria

ayor Martin Reilly has welcomed Bishop Ken Good and two visitors from Nigeria to The Guildhall in Derry . The visit took place on 17th October, on The International Day for the Eradication of Poverty.

Rev Canon John Okoli and Mrs Nanlop Ogbureke, both from Nigeria, are visiting the diocese of Derry and Raphoe to promote the Nets Work Project.

Nets Work is a year-long diocesan project to raise enough funds to save up to 40,000 lives. It has inspired everything from Fashion Shows, 5-Aside Football Tournaments to Pantomimes – all part of the effort to raise enough funds to buy 20,000 mosquito nets.

Mosquito nets are a surprisingly effective weapon in the fight against malaria.

The mosquito (the female – is the one that passes malaria and is silent, unlike the male) normally bites between 10pm

and 5am. When people sleep under mosquito nets it protects them during the most vulnerable time of the day.

In one area where a project to distribute mosquito nets took

place the death rate from malaria fell by 67%.

The World Health Organisation estimates that there were 216 million cases of malaria in 2010

resulting in 655,000 deaths.

This is equivalent to roughly 2000 deaths every day. A net costs around £5 / €6 but for a family who spend more than 90% of their income on food

Revamped green space at Lapwing Way £615,000 upgrade of infrastructure in city: McCausland

ocial Development Minister Nelson McCausland has visited the regenerated Lapwing Way Park in Clooney Estate, in the city.

The Northern Ireland Executive provided funding of £159,485 through the Department of Social Development’s Neighbourhood Renewal programme out of a total cost of £245,000 This project, a collaboration between the Department for Social Development, Clooney Estate Residents Association and Derry City Council in has now brought the park back into full usage for children and families within the Clooney Estate and surrounding areas of the Waterside.

City of Culture to host International Heritage Summit Reilly, welcoming news that the city is hosting the event, said it was a huge accolade for the city to host an event of such significance.

He said: “This is a very prestigious event with speakers and delegates travelling from all over Europe to participate.

Derry City Council is a member of the EWT, an international partnership organization that supports the strategic interests of walled towns and cities across Europe.

“The Holywell Trust has put together an exciting programme of national and international speakers and we are hugely excited that this event is taking place during our year as UK City of Culture.”

s Derry continues in its role as the UK City of Culture, it has been announced that the city is to host an international

heritage symposium later this month.

Over three days, delegates from across Europe will look at best practice in the heritage management when they visit

the city as part of European Walled Towns Symposium, which is to be held in the City from 23 – 26 October.

The event is being organized

by Holywell Trust with support

from Derry City Council and will focus on Walled Towns and Historic Towns and the contribution they can make to economic recovery in Europe.

The Director of Holywell Trust, Mr Eamonn Deane said: “we are delighted to be partnership with Derry City Council in bringing this important European Walled Towns event to the city.

“It is indicative of our shared ambition to have Derry known and promoted throughout Europe in Community and management of history and heritage.”

Living with Diabetes Thoughts ahead of World Diabetes Day Diabetes (diabetes mellitus) a condition in which the blood sugar is too high has become one of the most common illnesses in our society today. Approximately 2.9 million people in the UK suffer from diabetes, with a further 850,000 estimated as having diabetes but being unaware of their condition.

There are two main types of diabetes, Types 1 and 2.

Type 1 diabetes occurs in the younger age groups, often in the teens. In Type 1 diabetes the body’s immune system destroys the insulin –producing cells of the pancreas so to control blood sugar insulin has to be replaced by injections. Since these cells are out of action, insulin replacement is always going to be required in Type 1 diabetes.

Type 2 diabetes usually occurs in older patients. In this scenario the pancreas is either no longer producing enough insulin or the body cells do not react properly to it, which is called insulin resistance; 90% of diabetics in the UK suffer from Type 2 diabetes. Because insulin is still being produced by the body, there are more options for managing Type 2 diabetes starting with the adoption of a healthy diet and lifestyle and monitoring blood glucose, through to medication, often with tablets although insulin may become necessary over time.

Gestational diabetes is the name given

to diabetes occurring during pregnancy and blood sugar needs to be managed to minimize the impact on both mother and baby. Type 1 diabetes needs special attention during pregnancy to help minimize the impact of any changes in blood sugar and insulin requirements.

Many of the problems associated with diabetes result from its impact on the blood vessels and circulation such as stroke, heart disease, foot ulcers and vision, while others such as kidney disease can involve damage to the organ tissue itself. Complications can result from damage to the blood vessels serving the nervous system, affecting movement, sensation and the body’s internal processes.

Many people who have diabetes feel well and do not realise that staying on track with their blood sugar, medicines and lifestyle will pay dividends in the long term to avoid potential future problems.

How can you help yourself stay well with diabetes?

These days there are many people you can turn to for advice and support with diabetes, so if you are recently diagnosed, get to know your diabetes team, such as nurses, dieticians, podiatrists and of course medical specialists and ask for as much information as you feel you need to take control of your situation. Always attend your appointments and if you

have to miss one, make another for as soon as possible afterwards.

Make sure you are completely clear about how your health professionals want you to monitor your blood sugar, how often and why; change is always easier to cope with if we understand what we are actually doing and why it is important.

Comply with your drug regime and don’t forget to take your tablets even if you are feeling well, diabetes has a knack of creeping up behind you!

Here are some of the key steps which followed regularly can help prevent or delay developing complications: Healthy Weight Obesity is closely related to diabetes and starting with losing relatively small amounts of weight and hopefully progressing towards a normal weight for your height will help control blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol Healthy Diet It is said that there is no such thing as a “Diabetic Diet”, only a healthy one. Fresh fruit, reducing fat, salt and sugar are all key to a good diet but don’t forget advice is readily available so ask if you want to eat better but need a helping hand.

Stop smoking : easier said than done but one of the best things you can do as it has so many benefits, not least financial !

Get moving! 30 minutes a day 5 times a week is recommended but if that is not an option try and fit in exercise in ways that suit you and your schedule . A walk in the fresh air has even been shown to reduce depression, let alone get you fitter and help with blood sugar control - it doesn’t have to be 30 minutes each time.

Dental checkups: These need to be performed regularly to avoid dental decay, gum disease and infections.

Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster and Health Minister Edwin Poots have announced the opening of an £11.5million clinical research facility in Derry which will create 22 highquality researchposts.

The Northern Ireland Centre for Stratified Medicine is based at the University of Ulster and is a collaboration between the university’s Biomedical Sciences Research Institute, CTRIC (the Clinical Translational Research and Innovation Centre) and the Western Health and Social Care Trust (Western Trust).

It will primarily focus on personalised medicine approaches to managing chronic diseases, in essence, tailoring healthcare to individual patients.

It has been offered £5.6 million of support from Invest Northern Ireland, part funded by the European Regional Development Fund. The Department of Health has offered £1.5 million towards the project with the balance of £4.4 million provided by the University of Ulster.

Speaking at the opening of the centre, Arlene Foster said: “This project will help to establish Northern Ireland as a leader in

The rapid growth in lifestyle-related chronic disease, particularly in our elderly, has seen a large increase in research into interventions to change behaviours, risk factors and environments – but we need to make sure that what we are doing actually works.

This centre will allow to us do just that.”

The Mayor of Derry Cllr Martin Reilly also welcomed the multimillion pound investment in the new University of Ulster research centre at Altnagelvin hospital.

He said: “I am delighted to see this investment come to fruition; a specifically designed research unit will allow CTRIC to push ahead as a leading innovator in Healthcare research.

“The work they are currently carrying out in improving clinical research trials has already proven significantly invaluable in today’s Healthcare industry.

“This project, realised from the combined efforts of a number organizations including Invest Northern Ireland, the Public Health Agency and European Regional Development Fund will allow for a host of addi-

tional resources to continue their groundbreaking work, developing new technologies and systems to better predict disease and reduce treatment side effects for patients.”

Continuing, Mayor Reilly stated that as well as supporting a commercially viable business beneficial to the health of people, the research unit will also create business opportunities, allowing the development of partnerships among academic researchers, clinical practitioners and businesses, all of which has a positive economic impact on the city.

“This unit secures the potential for future investment from healthcare specific companies to Derry who now recognise the positive benefit in a city with a specialized, skilled workforce, educational facilities and improving infrastructure. Plans for a NW Regional Science Park at the regenerated Fort George site, due for completion in July 2014, reinforces further links to both existing education and research facilities at University of Ulster, and as part of the city’s One Plan, strengthen the city as a high tech niche to potential investors.”

ith October upon us already it’s certainly been a busy month, with a number of unique and exciting business events already taking place in the run up to Hallowe’en.

At the start of the month we were delighted to welcome back one of our most inspirational mentors Wayne Hemingway - Digital Entrepreneur, Event Co-ordinator, Designer, Motivational Speaker - there are few areas in which Wayne hasn’t made his mark. We’ve

been lucky enough to draw on Wayne Hemingway’s creativity and entrepreneurial experience on a number of occasions throughout the Business Opportunities Programme, and he never fails to impress with his unique perspectives, especially in the creative industries.

On October 1 he addressed audiences at two local events touching both the design and textiles industry and the retail industry. As co-creator of the fashion label Red or Dead, Wayne firstly gave a fascinating insight into his experience in the design world after launching the Fashion & Textile Design Matters document commissioned by the Inner City Trust. The research highlights a number of key issues currently facing the Fashion & Textile design sector, which collectively inhibit the success of fashion/ textile designers in the NW region.

At the event Wayne talked about the importance of the fashion industry which contributed £20.9 billion to the UK

economy in 2009 alone, and the creative and cultural sector which employs 1.5million people. Given the city’s long history in the textile trade he stressed that a return to traditional crafts and the production of high quality textiles products should be built into future strategies for boosting the local economy.

In his second address to businesses Wayne honed in on the art of positively influencing customers and how to indentify opportunities rising from local big events such as Hallowe’en, the Turner Exhibition, the Lumiere Festival and the Christmas programme.

His key messages were that local businesses must be clued into the impact of effective brand development and the tools of social media. With iPhone apps such as Pinterest being downloaded 200,000 times per day and Facebook amassing over a billion users, these tools have a reach far beyond any other media or marketing resources.

As 2013 rushes rapidly to a close, it’s fascinating to see this increasing shift towards the traditional skills and quality products of a bygone era coupled with the newest digital technologies being used to market them. As a city that bridges both through our vibrant creative industry and our advanced digital capabilities and technology development, we are definitely uniquely placed to harness the potential of both industries as we move forward into 2014.

Derry~Londonderry~Doire is the third Clipper 70 to pass into the Southern Ocean. It certainly wasn’t in our original plan but with the South Atlantic High being so far south and the fact that we sailed into unfavourable and decreasing wind last night, our hand was called.

We gybed south at about 0430 UTC and spent about eight hours heading at 90 degrees to Cape Town.

Although the obvious and expected results of this were a pummelling on the leaderboard, we are happy with our southerly position and hope to see some gains over the next few days or so.

Morale is high again without the need for floggings, this time it was the halfway party that had us rolling around the deck laughing.

It was fancy dress and it didn’t disappoint! In the cockpit we had the lonely

goat- herder from The Sound of Music, a glass of Guinness, Crocodile Dundee (not sure if it was one or two..?) together with baby croc, a Rastafarian, several cross-dressers, the best of which was our Russian banker complete in skin tight white leggings with pink tank-top and two perky apples as props...!

We wrapped the party up after a quick toast in order toprepare for a kite peel. We managed this in text book fashion with 21 knots of true wind and have since been surfing through the Southern Ocean at speeds of up to 20 knots. We may be going the long way but we’re definitely going the fun way!

Psycho Live! With the Ulster Orchestra T

he renowned film director Alfred Hitchcock once said ‘33% of the effect of Psycho was due to the music’, with the piercing shriek of violins in the infamous shower scene at the Bates Motel possibly the most famous piece of film music ever written.

Now cinema fans can see and hear Psycho live in The Venue on Friday, November 22, with the original score played by the Ulster Orchestra.

Pearse Moore, Chief Executive of the Nerve Centre which is presenting the movie as part of this year’s Foyle Film Festival, said: “This is another once-in-alifetime experience during the UK City of Culture year.

“Experience a powerhouse of driving rhythms and eerie menace as the Ulster Orchestra performs Bernard Herrmann’s chilling score, while Hitchcock’s cinematic classic is shown above on the big screen. Why not bring Mother?”

Hitchcock’s 1960 film Psycho, starring Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh, was made on a low budget in black and white, but quickly became one of the most successful films of all time.

Much of its tremendous impact is due to the music. Oscarwinning composer Bernard Herrmann worked closely with Hitchcock on several of his films, in this case using only strings to create the hair-raising atmosphere, including the famous shower scene.

Rosa Solinas, Chief Executive of the Ulster Orchestra, said: “The power of music and image combined captures the imagination like nothing else.

“The Ulster Orchestra has a strong track record of performing film music, and indeed of providing these exciting live-soundtrack experiences— everything from The Snowman to this, Hitchcock’s most shocking masterpiece! Sure to be a real thriller for those who dare to attend!”

The event is part of Cinema City, a month-long programme of film screenings and special

I want to say a little bit about my first visit, as i’m sure you can imagine, this is always the most apprehensive part of any new treatment and you just do not know what to expect at all!

I visited the derry/londonderry clinic for a consultation before commencing the treatments and was advised on the preparations for beginning the treatment i.e avoid alcohol 24 hours prior and then advised on the aftercare period in which case the 72 hour after the treatment is the most vital time in which the fat will drain from the body therefore it is important to drink plenty of water and include some exercise in order to maximise results! So I began the first treatment and really did not know what to expect. It is my experience that the term

I had said to my therapist on the second visit on how impressed I was with the treatment. Not only, the treatment itself, but Also in the fact that

The firebox grill, railway tavern nestled in the shores of lough swilly a mere ten minute drive from the city boasts a beautifully relaxed and rustic interior with a warm and inviting atmosphere throughout!

On our arrival we were greeted by the friendly staff and seated straight away right within view of the open firebox grill where you can see your food prepared and cooked!

The service from the get go could not be faulted. The staff here are very friendly and accommodating all adding to the dining experience.

I decided to order the Pan Seared Scallops, wrapped in Parma Ham, sundried Tomato pesto, mixed leaf salad and my guest, the; Asian Style Beef with stir-fry vegetables, coconut & chilli dip. The presenta-

tion of both dishes were superb. A real treat for the eyes as well as the palette! The flavours complimented my dish really well and I thoroughly enjoyed the scallops wrapped in the parma ham, the smoked flavour contrasted with the great texture of the scallops was delicious. I had a sneaky nibble of the asian beef salad which was remarkable, there was a great presence from the coconut and chilli dip which really enhanced the dish! The starter portions were plentiful for the beginning of a meal therefore we were given a little breather in between courses which I quite prefer.

I had been hearing plenty of raving reviews about the steaks at the firebox grill for quite some time now and my goodness, they did not fail to surpass expectation. The fillet steak I ordered was cooked exactly to my requirements and the taste was unbelievably good. I would go as far as saying this was the nicest steak I have had!

The smoking hot firebox grill is most definitely this restaurants’ “secret weapon”. The taste is superb and the tenderness of the meat was a true delight. This accompanied by a delicious melange of vegetables and

varied potatoes was an exquisite dining experience in itself.

Our waitress had checked in on us during the meal which I always think is really important and we couldn’t fault this meal and her attentive nature.

When she offered us a glance at the sweet menu it was just too tempting to resist. The menu provides for a fairly wide range in deserts for the sweetest tooth around. I opted for the creme caramel accompanied with ice cream and cookie and my guest choose the signature fudge brownie, and having tasted both I was definitely in love with the taste.... The mixed texture of warm fudge brownie and cold ice cream was lovely and it doesn’t do any harm to have a little try of everything.

The restaurant is definitely on my list of “must returns”. I loved the comfortable and inviting interior, and on a cold night the open fire and the aromas from the open firebox grill fill the restaurant as well as the friendly and enjoyable atmosphere.

Good food is a must but to me good customer service goes a long way als, and neither could be faulted here....

Cowley launches programme with jazz jam session Music Promise programme, which is a year-long programme of inspirational learning and performance based experiences for young people across Derry-Londonderry through the culture year.

“As part of this we asked schools and colleges across the city to identify exceptionally talented young people who can be the ambassadors for their schools and city this culture year.

T

he Playhouse was echoing to the sound of music on Monday as some of the city’s brightest young talents joined in an energetic music jamming session with none other than acclaimed jazz artist Neil Cowley, for the launch of the City of Culture’s Exceptionally Talented Programme.

Cowley, who has recorded with internationally acclaimed artists such as Adele and Emili Sande to name but a few, led a group of young local musicians selected from schools across the city for a special improvisation workshop allowing them to experiment with different sounds and experience new music techniques.

The Exceptionally Talented programme is geared towards mentoring and nurturing 50 of the most talented 11-18 year olds in the city across a range of musical genres.

Each of these young musicians will be supported by an individual learning plan (ILP) which will help them to develop their talents and showcase them to the city, supported through the City of Culture programme.

Newly Appointed Co-ordinator of the programme, award winning local composer Sean Doherty, said he was astounded by the level of talent among the participants.

He said: “The Exceptionally Talented scheme is a strand of the

“Delivering an essay for BBC Radio 3’s If Walls Could Talk series, he paid tribute to Derry which he calls ‘Music City’.

He said: “There is the most naturally gifted culture of improvisation here that I have ever seen.

“It amazes me the level of musicality in the city. I have said before that there is more music per square mile than in any place I have ever visited.”

Cowley has been working tirelessly with children throughout the year as mentor for the BBC’s Music Promise TV series being produced by Alleycats, and in December will deliver his own Music Promise to the city - a specially commissioned piece of music which will be performed alongside some of the children he has been working with.

Back To Basics Baking With

Roisin’s Bakes

As the evenings grow short and darkness looms it’s definitely time to dream of comforting foods we associate with autumn. Apple pies, fruit cakes, spiced buns and shortbread all come to my mind. Pumpkin pie is one idea with its origins in America. With the increase in sales of pumpkins for carving spooky faces and patterns what could we make from the pumpkin flesh? Pumpkin pie is a sweet dessert often eaten during the fall or autumn as we know it here! The pumpkin is a symbol of harvest time and is traditionally enjoyed for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Try these recipes and decide if Pumpkin should be imported to this country or left far away on the other side of the ocean.

Perfect Pumpkin Pie Ingredients (For a 20cm tart tin) For the pastry: 170g plain flour Pinch of salt 100g cold butter 2tbsp caster sugar 1 egg yolk

For the pie filling:

1 small culinary pumpkin or medium butternut squash 145g maple syrup 1 tsp cinnamon ½ tsp ground ginger ½ tsp ground cloves 3 tbsp golden rum (optional) 2 large eggs, beaten 150ml evaporated milk

Method: 1. Pre-heat the oven to 200C. Cut pumpkin or squash in

with baking beans. Put in the oven for 15 minutes, then remove the paper and beans, and bake for another 5-10 minutes until the base is pale golden. Remove from the oven. Turn the oven down to 180C.

3. Meanwhile, make your pastry. Sift the flour into a mixing bowl, stir in the salt, then grate in the butter. Rub in using your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs, then stir through the sugar. Mix the egg yolk with 2 tbsp iced water, and sprinkle half over the mixture, then stir together with a knife until it comes together in a paste – add a

Pumpkin Bread/muffins I n g r e d i e n t s Method (Makes approximately 12 muffins) 3 small loaves, or 1 large loaf 1 3/4 cup pureed pumpkin 1 1/2 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup butter, softened 3 eggs 3-4 cups all-purpose unbleached flour 2 tablespoons baking powder 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg 2 cups chopped walnuts or chocolate chips

Preheat the oven to 180.

Combine the pumpkin, brown sugar, butter, and eggs and mix until creamy. In a separate bowl, combine all of the dry ingredients except the nuts or chocolate chips.

Mix 3 cups of the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients, then add as much of the 4th cup as necessary to achieve the proper consistency (moist, but thick enough to stand a spoon in).

Add the nuts or chocolate chips and stir in.

Pour or spoon the batter into greased muffin tins or bread pans. Bake on the center rack until a toothpick poked into the center comes out dry.

Muffins should take between 20 and 25 minutes to bake, small loaves between 25 and 30 minutes, and full sized loaves between 50 minutes and 1 hour.

7. Bake for about 40 minutes, checking from half an hour onwards, until the filling is set, but still slightly wobbly in the centre. Allow to cool on a wire rack for at least an hour before serving.

The 2,000 plus arena, will see 4 Professional ISKA World titles, 3 ISKA European titles and 2 Irish amateur titles up for grabs. Fighting on the highly anticipated show will be all local talent such as current ISKA Professional Super Heavy-

Winners – Born? Made? Or just Lucky?

his question has been asked numerous times and explored in many ways since the advent of talent spotting in professional sport.

So what is it that goes into the making of a champion?

Is it genetics which decide how gifted a sportsperson is (or will become)? Extensive training and experience? Or simply the luck of being in the right place at the right time?

Many early theorists believed individuals were either born with talent or not.

However, modern research shows regular practice, mentality and the correct conditions (such as coaching and diet) are required for one to achieve their peak performance.

Getting spotted and the ‘breaks’ (luck factors) can also be considered pieces of the jigsaw.

In a speech made at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, former British PM Tony Blair asked: “What

makes a champion?” His answer was that ‘natural talent’ gave elite athletes a distinct advantage over others.

Having come off the back of such a great 2012 season, McIlroy admitted he always felt it was going to be difficult to emulate those feats in 2013.

Despite managing just one round under 70 - a closing 69 in the US Masters – in the majors this year at the time of writing, McIIroy insists he is not far off his best.

There have also been issues off the course for Rory.

Rumours of a split with his tennis star girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki and court case dispute to be settled with his former management company have not helped.

he phrase ‘the difference a year makes’ is usually said of those who have achieved a meteoric rise to stardom. That was said of golfer Rory McIIroy in 2012.

Twelve months on, however, the reverse has happened and even at 24 years of age he is already in danger of becoming

fallen star.

Last year, the Ulsterman won five times - including his second major by eight shots at Kiawah Island - to finish top of the money list on both sides of the Atlantic.

This year though he has yet to register a single victory in what has been a turbulent season

for the former world number one.

“This is the first year that I’ve struggled as a pro and it’s the first time I didn’t live up to my expectations,” said McIIroy in an interview with RTE Sport.

Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley, when asked about McIIroy’s recent form, says he expects his Irish compatriot to bounce back.

“He knows I’m supportive of him and I’m there if he wants to call,” said McGinley.

“We are all in the game of professional golf, we all know there’s ups and downs. We’ve all experienced them.

“As things move on and time goes on, he will find his form and he’ll have success again.”

Ballykelly are the reigning North West Junior Cup winners and play a wonderful brand of football under manager Ryan Magee. This will be a tough ask, but the men from Ballykelly should come home on the bus with the win and plenty of celebratory drink.

It’s hard to believe that both these sides sit in the Premier relegation zone. But it’s early days and that should change soon. Dungiven took vital points off Newbuildings last week, but Ardmore may have too much quality with them this Saturday.

Boom! What a game in prospect. Probably the oldest rivalry in the NWJL, this game will attract a great crowd. Lincoln are rebuilding this season under manager Patterson while BB have become the Man City of the league.

Game of the week in the First Division. Both sides have strengthened considerably and should go toe to toe all season for the title. Referee Collie McDaid will have his hands full too. This could be a clinker!

This won’t be a fixture for the faint-hearted. Both sides sit mid-table and will refuse to be beaten by their near rivals. Caw enjoyed a fantastic away win in the IJC last week. Their pitch is just about the best in the league and this will suit both sides who like to play a passing game.

Claudy have surprised a few people this year and are playing a decent brand of football under Nigel Eakin. Churchill enjoy playing at Wilton Park, but the away side should have enough to shade this one.

Foyle Wanderers v Glendermott (V South) Both sides sit mid-table in the First Division, and the league table rarely lies. Glendermott were magnificent last week in the IJC defeating Iveagh Utd. Wanderers bring back Michael Allen and Steven White and should be good enough for at least a point at home.

Bridge (M McGarrigle) Ardmore Reserves enjoyed a much-needed win away to Roe Rovers Reserves last week, and if Jimmy McAllister takes his new boots out of the box they should earn another 3 points.

Prediction: home win Roe Rovers Reserves v Burnfoot Utd (E Sherry) The Limavady Borough ‘El Classico’, should be a game of blood and thunder. Referee Eugene Sherry is just the man to keep this game from boiling over. Wilson Tosh’s side should have a little too much fire power for the home side.

Prediction: Greysteel Artigarvan v Dromore (C Hargan) Another mid-table clash. Both sides are fairly new to the NWJL and are still trying to finf their feet.

Prediction: score draw BBOB Res v Dungiven 3rds Both sides sit near the foot of the 2nd Division and will do well to move up the table. BB reserves, with home advantage, might have just enough to tip the balance. That said, Dungiven men never know when they’re beaten.
