Politicians divided over incineration plan

Local politicians seemed to be divided this week over plans for a gasification plant to be located on the outskirts of Derry. The huge plant will cost approximately £220m to construct. It will cover 150,000sq ft with the recycling contracts valued at £500m over 25 years. The funding for the project has been sourced over threeand-a-half years and includes a £35m contribution from the Executive. Following a meeting last week by those opposed to the plant the Minister for the Environment Mark H Durkan said he wanted to hear more views on

the matter. He said: “This ultimately falls on me. “There has been quite a bit of public debate and talk and I want to learn more about what people from both sides want. “The plant has planning permission and will ultimately require permitting permission and that means it will come to my desk. “I came to the meeting to listen and to take away people’s views.” However Mr. Durkan’s party colleague Colr. Shaun Gallagher said that fears about the proposed plant were ‘misplaced’

and added that the turnout for last week’s meeting was ‘disappointing.’ He added: “This is a massive good news story for the whole of the north west, not least because of the job creation aspect. “But also it will mean that Derry City Council, instead of putting 120,000 tonnes of waste into landfill, will be able to reduce that figure to 3,000 tonnes. “It is critical that we reach our waste management target because failing to do so will result in severe penalties. But this also means that we are dealing with our waste and not dumping it into landfill and leaving it

for future generations to deal with.” Shaun Gallagher added: “I have heard suggestions that some people think this is just an incinerator but it absolutely is not. I was at the forefront of the campaign that opposed the incinerator that was proposed for Derry years ago and I would not allow my name to be associated with this project if it wasn’t environmentally sound.” If the the site becomes operational, it will recycle waste from seven council areas — Derry City, Strabane, Limavady, Coleraine, Ballymoney, Magherafelt and Moyle.

Valuable points for Derry clipper in round the world race At the Clipper Round World Yatch Race, the Northern Irish entry Derry~londonderry~doire stormed to victory yesterday after cross the scoring gate in first place further extending the lead in race two to Rio de janeiro.

out and on the edge for 48 hours. This is mentally draining as well as physically. I am extremely proud of Derry~Londonderry~Doire, they have sailed flawlessly in trying conditions and their will to keep on pushing is phenomenal. ‘ As the fleet approach the Doldrums, Invest Africa is getting into the spirit of the sea and celebrating International Talk like a Pirate Day, on board PSP Logistics, poetry is in motion, and for the entire fleet dodging flying fish on deck is becoming a daily occurance!

Derr y~Londonderr y~Doire crossed the line at 11.17 UTC winning a valuable three points as the entry continues to extend its lead in the race. Henri Lloyd crossed the line in second place at 1203 UTC with Mission performance chasing their tail in third place at 1445UTC winning three, two, one points retrospectively.

During the last 24 hours Henri Lloyd, Qingdao and Invest Africa have all activated Stealth Mode hiding their position from the rest of the fleet for the next 24 hours.

Sean McCarter, skipper of Derry~Londonderry~Doire shared his elation after securing a valuable three points yesterday. ‘We wanted the points badly to make up for an unlucky finish in Race one when the course was shortened. We had

no idea Mission Performance and Henri Lloyd would push so hard, I guess they were in

the exact same position as ourselves after Race one. We were pretty much flat

Positions will be broadcast at 0000UTC on 19 September and then will be hidden from the fleet (and on the Race Viewer) through the 0600, 1200 and 1800UTC schedules, before being broadcast again at 0000UTC on 20 September.

The view from the boat Straight from the horses's mouth here is the skipper of the londonderry~doire Sean McCarter's most recent diary. "Good morning Sports fans! And what a morning it is. Grey, rainy but actually quite nice in the 28 degree heat! Maybe that's all the Irish winters are missing! "We are just passing the latitude of the most northerly Cape Verde Island at a distance of about 80 miles to the west. "We were conscious not to go too close as although a shorter distance to the finish, the chance of getting stuck in its wind shadow was too risky.

"This has resulted in us dropping miles, and possibly the lead position to Henri Lloyd.

"The wind has been light and changeable since dusk so we're getting a good taste of what's to come in the Doldrums. We have just peeled from Yankee 1 to wind seeker which has improved speed dramatically. "Pending ratification from the race committee, we were unofficially awarded the three points as the first entry through the Scoring Gate yesterday. It was a huge effort by the team to fend off the relentless challenges fromHenri Lloyd and Mission Performance for several days. "Congratulations to skippers Eric Holden and Matt Mitchell and

their crew for their points and also the race within the race! I wish both teams a quick passage through the Doldrums and look forward to the next sprint on the other side.

Calls for dig site to be preserved “That’s why this is so significant, it’s allowing us to excavate below plantation levels of the city and hopefully find some of that earlier history.” One of the possibilities being explored is that the project could go some way towards resolving the long running dispute as to where the city’s founder St. Colmcille built his first monastery over 1500 years ago. It is also believed that there may be more skeletons uncovered during the dig.

There have been calls for the site of an archaeological dig which has uncovered human remains that are at least several hundred years old to be preserved. The excavations which are currently been carried out at the Bishop Street car park beside St/ Augustine’s Church have unearthed what is believed to be three skeletons dating back at least to the 17th century. The dig has been organised by the Northern Ireland Environment Agency (NIEA), Derry City Council; Museum and Heritage Service and the Centre for Archaeological Fieldwork (CAF),

Queen’s University Belfast. It is thought that it is uncovering evidence of Derry’s development from the postmedieval period and possibly earlier. Last week the team of volunteers found articulated skeletons of two adults and a child as well as part of clay pipe stem which the CAF said in-

dicated the finds were from a post-medieval era. Nails surrounding the child’s remains also indicate a coffin which would have decayed over more than 300 years since the burial. The archaeological experts explained the remains were orientated east-west mirroring the orientation of St Augustine’s church as in tradition with Christian burials.

Environment Minister and Derry man Mark H Durkan said: “The finds will hopefully shed a light on what existed at this important site many centuries ago”. Archaeologist Emily Murray said: “We know that this was a very important medieval site but we haven’t found anything from it as yet.

“Archaeological excavations are an important way of shaping our understanding of the past and give a valuable insight into our

fascinating history for locals and tourists alike. “I look forward to hearing of the history of this find in addition to other hidden gems which will be uncovered in the remaining weeks of the dig.” Mark Lusby, City Walls Herigate Coordinator is one of a number of campaigners who wants to see the site preserved when the dig is over. “Is it appropriate that the foundation point for the plantation centre of the city and the monastic settlement of Derry is sealed under tarmac for car parking? “Surely this should be a place for reflection or a garden.” As the dig continues until September 27 team members haven’t dismissed the possibility of finding an important figure in history, like the one of King Richard III found in a car park in Leicester.

Fleadh success for young US girl Widespread A visually impaired young American girl has said her legs were shaking like jelly when she won a trophy named after the famous blind harpist Turlough O’Carolan at the Fleadh Cheoil na h-Eireann in Derry last month.

Emily Safko plays the harp and last month she took first place in her age group at Fleadh in Derry. “I was so happy,” Emily Safko, 11, said, “My legs felt like jelly, like I was going to collapse.” Instead, she brought home the cup named for Turlough O’Carolan, the harpist and esteemed 17th- and 18th-century composer of traditional Irish music. The trophy gleams in the front hallway of the home the winner shares with her parents, teacher Greg and social worker Amy, and siblings Livia, 9, and Evan, 5. “I am very proud of Emily, and

how hard she has worked to earn this title,” Greg, 52, says, adding that he loves “to hear her fill our house with the sounds of Irish dance tunes and airs.”

“Playing the harp has made learning braille easier for her,” Amy, 43, says. Earlier, mother asked daughter if she wanted to disclose her visual impairment. “I want people to know,” Emily said. In 2011, both of Emily’s retinas detached due to a genetic condition called Stickler syndrome, which affects connective tissue. Despite three surgeries, most of her peripheral vision is gone. In low light and without a contrasting visual backdrop, she sometimes can’t see the strings of her magnificent instrument. But the student doesn’t linger over what she has lost. “I want to be an artist and a harpist, and possibly an actress, but not in movies,” Emily declares. “I might want to go on Broadway.”

The youthful bravado is matched by her work ethic. Emily practices daily and takes weekly lessons, some via Skype and others in person, with harp teacher Alex Boatright of Washington, D.C.

“Winning at All-Ireland is a really, really big deal,” Boatright adds. “It’s a lot more than just playing the harp well.” Emily adores competition one of the things she loved about soccer, a game she can no longer play. “But she can play the harp no matter what,” Amy says. As could the man for whom Emily’s trophy is named. Nearly three centuries after his death, O’Carolan is still regarded by some as Ireland’s national composer. He was a poet, too. And he couldn’t see.

Expansion of Neighbourhood Watch in Rural areas Thieves beware Neighbourhood Watch is about One of the biggest and most successful partnerships between the community, the police and statutory agencies has recently undergone an expansion in the Derry area which ios bad news for thieves and burglars. The number of Neighbourhood Watch schemes operational in the Derry City Council area has recently increased with the accreditation of three new schemes in the Strathfoyle area. The schemes in Claragh Crescent, Deramore Drive and Clonmeen Drive have recently been approved by the Department of Justice and PSNI. Neighbourhood Watch is one of the biggest and most successful crime prevention initiatives ever and is grounded in a partnership between the community, the police and other statutory agencies.

Neighbourhood Watch is not solely about reducing burglary or

break-ins it is also about fostering and growing communities who care. This point is emphasised by Alex Duffy, Neighbourhood Watch Co-ordinator for Deramore Drive who said: “This rural estate has a well established community spirit with many residents in the area having lived there all their lives. However, a number of break-ins and thefts in recent years have prompted the residents to establish Neighbourhood Watch Schemes primarily to ‘keep an eye out for each other’. “Apart from the obvious home security aspects of the scheme I feel that this initiative will also bring us closer together and make a real contribution to the safety and well-being of the area.” Councillor Paul Fleming, Chairperson of the Derry Policing and Community Safety Partnership and elected repre-

sentative for the area added: “From a community safety perspective I am delighted to see an increase in the number of Neighbourhood Watch Schemes especially in the rural area which I represent. “The PCSP has been instrumental in promoting these schemes and we now have over 20 accreditated schemes in the Council area covering over 700 homes. “Also, with the increase in burglaries and house break-ins in the Council area last year it is even more important that people take extra home safety precautions and look out for their neighbours.

“I would encourage anyone considering setting up a scheme in their area to contact the Derry PCSP on 7137 6565.”

Bloody Sunday film at New York festival Paul Greengrass’ film ‘Bloody Sunday’ will feature at this year’s New York Film Festival.

The film which was partly made in Derry in 2002 covers the events around the shooting dead of 14 civil rights demonstrators in Derry on January 30 1972. The film, which stars James Nesbitt as civil rights leader Ivan Cooper, was well received by critics when it was first released and features in this year’s New York Film Festival as part of a show case of films from various directors in what have been described as some of ‘the finest previous work

from these filmmakers.’

‘Bloody Sunday’ has a special showing at the Walter Reade cinema on Thursday September 26. In the programme for the event Bloody Sunday is described as follows. “This critical breakthrough showcases Paul Greengrass’s signature ability to make the recent past seem viscerally present. “The titular Sunday was January 30 1972, when a group of British troops massacred 14 unarmed civil rights marchers in the Northern Irish city of Derry. Greengrass limits

Course to assist groups to look Beyond Funding With the cut backs in public funding continuing across the board Derry City Council are organising a half day conference to help community groups and organisations to look at alternatives to grant aid and funding.

The conference will take place in the Tower Hotel on Tuesday October 1 and will run from 9.15 a.m. to 12.45 a.m. Entitled Beyond Funding the conference is an opportunity for attendees to learn about approaches other than grants which may help their group. Sue Divin, Community Relations Officer with the Council explained: “Most of us are all too aware of the complexity in sustaining and juggling grants to keep our Community and Voluntary Sector groups going. “Many community organisations are at the end of some funding streams, or facing funding gaps before ‘Peace IV’, or simply finding pots of funding shrinking and becoming more competitive at a time of

austerity, so this event will be of great assistance to them. “Beyond Funding aims to help organizations move from dependency and grants to developing other income streams and working towards a different approach to sustainability and ‘mainstreaming’ of initiatives. “It will aim to present practical strategies, income generation ideas, case studies and examples to helping make groups a more ‘multi-income’ organizations. “It is relevant to community and voluntary groups and statutory staff working with communities or similar. The conference facilitator, Diversiton, is a leading provider of mainstreaming and sustainability capacity building work.” The Community Relations Officer said that Derry City Council is delighted to host the conference under its Good Relations Strategy. She said: “Whilst the issue of funding and sustainability is not usually directly associated with Community Relations it is definitely an issue which pro-

vokes interest from across the entire community and voluntary Sector locally. “So whether you are a community development group, a women’s group, a local band, a faith based organisation, a youth group or an ethnic minority group – in fact any kind of community organisation – this event should be of interest to you.” The event is expected to be popular, so there is a maximum of 3 places per organization and booking is by advance registration only. Name, full contact details and any special requirements must be given at the time of booking. The booking deadline is Friday 27th September 2013. Applications are open to all but in the event of oversubscription, priority will be given to those who live, work or volunteer within the Derry City Council area.

Derry City Council encourages gas safety message

Check gas appliances regularly ing this issue, Just like you get your car MOT every year, you should have your home gas safety checked every year by a Gas Safe registered engineer. “During Gas Safety Week we were actively encouraging householders and businesses to be gas aware and to take the necessary precautions to make sure their homes and businesses are safe from gas leaks or faulty appliances.

‘Get your gas appliances checked for your own good and that of everyone around you.’ This is the stark message being endorsed by Derry City Council following Gas Safety Week.

City Council said that Council was endorsing the NI wide campaign by the HSE in an effort to make people aware of the dangers of badly fitted and poorly serviced gas cookers, fires and boilers and how they can put the public at risk from carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions.

With gas safety week just finished Derry City Council is encouraging the public to be aware of the dangers associated with gas and to have their homes regularly checked. Barry Doherty, Senior Environmental Health Officer with Derry

He said: “Derry City Council is happy to endorse Gas Safety Week and to help the HSE get the message out in relation to gas safety. “It’s vitally important that the public be proactive in address-

“The HSE have put together a list of useful tips for people to ensure they are gas aware and take the necessary precautions to keep safe.

Stay Gas Safe with these top tips: 1. Always use a Gas Safe registered engineer to fit, fix and service gas appliances– it’s the law and will help keep you safe. 2. Always ask to see an engineer’s Gas Safe Register ID card and check the back of the card to ensure they are qualified to carry out the specific type of gas work you need. 3. Have all your gas appliances, including boilers, gas cookers and gas fires, safety checked every year. 4.

Find a Gas Safe

“I would encourage everyone to take heed of the advice and follow the guidelines provided. Derry City Council’s Environmental Health officers are more than happy to provide any additional advice and support they can,“ he added.

guidance. Carbon monoxide can leak from appliances and kill.

5. Unsafe gas appliances can put you at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions. Recognise the symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, nausea, breathlessness, collapse and loss of consciousness.

8. Only use gas appliances for their intended purpose e.g. don’t use a gas oven to heat a room or use a gas barbeque inside.

6. Check gas appliances for warning signs that they are not working properly e.g. lazy yellow flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks or stains on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room. 7. Buy an audible carbon monoxide alarm for your home and make sure it is located near to your gas appliances in accordance with the manufacturer’s

9. Always ensure there is enough ventilation for your gas appliances to allow them to burn correctly and make sure you are not blocking any air vents that provide an air supply to the gas appliance. 10. Anybody working with gas has to be Gas Safe registered by law. Report someone working without registration or call Gas Safe Register on the free phone number 0800 408 5500.

Further advice can be sought by contacting the HSE NI’s Gas Safe Register on 0800 408 5500 or Derry City Council’s Environmental Health Department on 71 36 51 51 directly.

Imogen Heap, the multi-award winning multi-instrumentalist, will perform at a special concert in St Columb’s Hall on Friday 25 October with a host of acts including the Roundhouse Choir, Encore, Colmcille Ladies and Holst Singers. Festival activities will also include school competitions and Big Sing Workshops, national competitions, and performances and workshops in the equal voice, mixed voice, youth, sacred and gospel categories.

“I have always been a beauty fanatic. My love for beauty and skin care started at a very young age, stealing my mothers makeup to leave myself looking like a clown. At the age 11I had my own skin care regimen , and through the years i have gathered myself a beauty cupboard that looked like something from ‘Hoarders’. I adore makeup. I started my career in NYC as a plus size model , watching how the makeup artist worked I learned so much . Moving on in my career I just knew makeup was my next big thing so I went to the chic studios makeup school in manhattan , I've done NYC fashion week TV movies pop videos and so much more , now I have returned to my beautiful home town of Derry to spread my beauty knowledge . I love experimenting with new products, colour techniques and styles. I am always learning and updating my craft. What inspires me about makeup is the change it can make to

Tacks – The Loss of a Legend No one ever imagined that we would be talking about Tackler (Darren Crawford) in past tense, but as fate would have it, here we are. It’s difficult to sum up exactly who Tacks (as he was more commonly known as by his many friends and family) was. He had a certain something, often described by those closest to him as “the beauty of Tacks!” Never shy of a hard day’s graft, Tacks left school at 16 for a plumber’s apprenticeship and worked for Omega until a recent illness. His skills with a spanner were second to none - and Derry will be lost without his big heart, big smile and helpful attitude. Generosity would probably be his strongest characteristic, especially with his time, as he always went out of his way to help those around him. However, that generous spirit came with a rare modesty - as Tacks was humble to the last, even insisting on doing odd jobs for the price of a cup of tea! A real family man, Tacks was a big believer in traditional family values and he doted on his

mammy, Bernie. He was always so thoughtful and protective, and even at the height of his illness, he went to great lengths to hide how ill he was to protect his family. A man of simple pleasures, Tacks’ sanctuary was spending hours with his daddy, Tony, and uncle Gerard out fishing at the Faughan. As a brother to Diarmuid, John and Melanie, he was very caring and supportive but his deepest affections were for his only sister, Melanie – and the two were like best friends. He was also a proud uncle to Melanie’s children, his only nephew Eoin and Goddaughter, Anna. When Tacks made an entrance, his personality and huge character filled the room and brought it to life. He was the life and soul of the party, especially with his roguish humour and that loud, infectious laugh of his. He was always a pleasure to be around and, determined to make others feel better, he often saw humour in the bleakest of situations. Few could doubt his reliability and work ethic and Tacks worked hard up until his illness. Everyone remembers that Tacks had a heart of gold.

He was such a loyal friend who loved those fortunate enough to be a part of his social circle. He always saw the good in people and the world in general, and to sum him up, it would be fair to say that anyone who knew him loved him... He was a beautiful person with a beautiful soul and he is missed by so many. Those who knew him realise now that it was a privilege to know such an absolute gentleman. Though he would probably disagree and laugh at us all now, Tacks is a legend because of the great way in which he saw the world and the impression he left upon it. He really was one in a million and there will never be another like him. A night dedicated to the memory of Tacks, and to celebrate his life, will take place this Saturday, September 28 at the Delacroix Bar on Buncrana Road. With an army of musician friends eager to help, the entertainment will be provided by the likes of Thumping Jellyfish, Bulrush, Denis & Caolan, Rory Morrin and many others. Tickets are available now from Link Music on Castle Street, priced £5, or pay on the door. All are welcome to come and remember the gentleman that Tacks was.

No, it’s not your liver, although the liver performs the most diverse variety of functions, it is actually So how is this achieved? The answer to the skin which is the largest in terms of this question lies in the very nature of the skin itself. Skin is composed of two physical mass. primary layers, the epidermis, which And it does more than making sure contains no blood vessels but provides that everything else is tucked away and waterproofing and serves as a barrier to keeping the rain out; maintaining body infection, (the “cling film”) and the dermis temperature, expressing emotion, form- which contains the blood vessels and ing a barrier to the elements, our skin provides the cushioning we need from is perfectly adapted to help our bodies the outside world as well as containing stay in equilibrium with our surround- the blood vessels and glands. ings and because it has to also be able to cope with every movement we make Treat your skin like qualand sudden changes in our environment it is stressed in the most direct way, every ity leather? minute of every day. If you are lucky enough to have a pair of Manolos or Louboutins, I bet you don’t just wear them out in the wet to go shopping for your groceries! Your skin is the same; it needs that care and maintenance that you would not hesitate to give an expensive pair of shoes, whether by protecting them from damaging conditions or maintaining their flexibility and appearance with a specialist shoe cream. So you should use a specialist natural moisturising cream to give your skin the treatment it deserves.

Get some ‘lip service’ over winter As winter approaches we need to change our approach to skincare, cold temperatures and drying winds can be very wearing and particular attention needs to be

paid to the delicate areas. Many people find that their lips can become badly chapped and sore, for a very good reason. The skin of the lips is much thinner than that on the rest of the face and of course it is under tremendous strain accommodating the sudden stretches and puckering from speaking, smiling and eating. Regular application of moisturisers and barrier creams are very helpful and men need to realize that they are not immune and a little pot or tube of lip balm can make the difference between comfort and misery. It doesn’t have to come in grapefruit or cherry flavour, there are many neutral options and there is definitely something out there to suit everyone. Anyone of Marble Hill’s moisturising creams also act as great natural non fragranced lip balms.

Moisturise, Moisturise

Moisturise,

A good moisturiser is vital for exposed faces and hands to help maintain skin at its best and minimize the likelihood of eczema and hacks. If your skin is prone to eczema try to avoid extremes of temperature- too hot and dry indoors or intense cold while you are out and about.. Remember to wear well-insulating gloves, avoiding wool as it can cause irritation. Fingers are very vulnerable to becoming cold quicker than other parts of the body and as anyone who has eczema knows it only takes moments to trigger a flare –up but it can take months to get back to normal. Sore, cracked hands are a real source of misery so do take care.

Manual records

So what is an accounting system? An accounting system has procedures and controls sufficient to collect, record and classify financial information. This data should be accurate, relevant and timely to enable you to fulfil all your filing and reporting obligations. More importantly

Manual systems can be tedious and time consuming; however some owners are very comfortable with this method of data entry. They understand the single entry recording system and this is sufficient to produce year-end information. A major drawback, however, is the time and effort required to extract detailed management

information. A manual system is rarely used in driving the business.

Electronic workbooks A step up is the use of electronic records such as Excel workbooks. These systems have the efficiencies of built-in formulae to take the tedium out of adding monthly columns of figures. This again is a single entry system and whilst good for collating and analysing data it takes time to produce and keep updated monthly management information.

Computerised accounting packages Computerised packages come in various levels, from the basic to the sophisticated systems that can cater for such areas as stock and multi currencies. They have the advantage of integration and the ability to produce real time information about the operation of the business. You know your numbers: sales activity, overheads, and profitability. Reporting enables you to track Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) and drive your business month on month. When choosing a computerised system, you will need to make a solid commit-

We are now seeing the emergence of online systems and with the ease of access and cloud storage these are starting to attract serious attention. My philosophy has always been to keep it as simple as possible. You need to understand your finance function before investing in expensive systems. Carry out sufficient research to ensure you implement the most appropriate system for your particular business needs. Consider not only the hardware and software but also the installation of the system and staff training. Invest in a system that will grow with your business.

Often an individual’s choice to become a Reiki Master will coincide with big shifts in the way he/she chooses to live their life. The choice to become a Reiki Master is a choice to assist others in re-

a warm, glowing radiance flowing through and surrounding the body. Intense heat can sometimes be felt coming from the Reiki Practioner’s hands on different areas of the body. Energy centres that are out of balance or blocked will require more Reiki energy so the Practioner’s hands will heat up as the Reiki energy channelled intensifies. Reiki treats the whole person, including the body, emotions, mind and soul. The treatment process is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement. “I have felt the benefits of Reiki after one visit to Sinead @ The Chrysalis Cove. “I had a Reiki session with Sinead @ The Chrysalis Cove and I found it very beneficial. I had a problem with vertigo and the healing was very good for me both physically and spiritually” (Paul Kee, Head of Football Development). “Having suffered with skin problems all my life I really had tried everything from acupuncture to very restrictive diets. Nothing seemed to work. At my wits end I contacted my local Reiki Practioner to give it a go. I didn’t know much about it and I was sceptical. After only one session I felt a major ‘shift’ in my body and my skin started to heal and wasn’t so itchy. I stopped scratching in my sleep for the first time in years. I am convinced Reiki helped with this, it really can produce amazing results” (Richard). For anyone interested in Learning Reiki at first level (Reiki 1) I am delivering a Reiki 1 workshop in An Creagan, Omagh on 14th September. Back To Basics Baking With

Roisin’s Bakes

Royal Chocolate Biscuit Cake This week I stumbled across a picture of a chocolate biscuit cake and my mind boggled as to what this actually is! It sounds delicious and my initial thought was that it was a chocolate sponge cake with biscuit incorporated somewhere. Upon further investigation I found that it is

Ingredients 275g / 10oz Butter 150ml / 1/4 pt Golden Syrup 225g / 8oz Good Quality Chocolate 1/2 x 400g Packet of Digestive Biscuits (roughly crushed) 1/2 x 400g Packet of Rich Tea Biscuits (roughly crushed) 125g/4oz Shamrock Nuts (walnuts, brazils, almonds) optional 125g / 4oz Shamrock Fruit (sultanas, apricots, cherries) optional 1 Packet of

Fondant or melted chocolate (4oz) to decorate

ingredients you prefer, if used. Stir well.

Method:

4. Transfer to prepared tin. Level it on top and press down well to avoid “air gaps”. Refrigerate for 3 hours or place in the freezer for around an hour. Wrap completely in greaseproof paper and store in a fridge.

1. Line a 15cms/6″ round cake tin or a 2lb loaf tin with a double layer of greaseproof paper. 2. Melt the butter, syrup and chocolate in a pan over a low heat. Stir to make sure all the ingredients are well mixed together. 3. Add the biscuits, maltesers and fruit and nuts or any other

BANANA BREAD

like a giant tray bake formed into the shape of a cake or loaf. A Royal favourite and if its good enough for a Royal wedding reception I thought it was worth a try. Beware that it is extremely dense and heavy therefore a cake will go a long way but it’s delicious and certainly recommended.

Much to my surprise it’s very popular particularly here in Ireland and has a huge range of variations as you can just about anything from raisins to pecans to grated orange or lemon. Alcohol could also be added for an extra luxurious treat.

5. Cover with fondant or melted chocolate and decorate as desired.

Another firm favourite seller of mine is Banana Loaf. A deliciously moist loaf with no need for butter and is an ideal food if your on the move. Banana bread is utterly delicious, the natural sweetness of the fruit lending itself perfectly to baking. A great way to use up those left over bananas and the riper the bananas the better. If you have any bananas which are past eating but you don’t want to toss out mash them and freeze them in a plastic container. If you need to hurry the ripening process wrap in damp kitchen towel and place in a paper bag. This recipe is one of the all time classic home bakers, Mary Berry.

Ingredients 100g(4oz) softened butter 175g(6oz) soft light brown sugar 2 large eggs 2 ripe bananas, mashed 225g(8oz) self raising flour 1level tsp baking powder 2 tbsp milk.

2oz chopped walnuts or chocolate chips (optional)

Method 1. Preheat oven to 180C/Fan 160C/ Gas4. Grease and line a 900g/2lb loaf tin. 2. Measure all ingredients into a mixing bowl and beat for 2mins, until well blended. Spoon into the prepared tin and level the surface. 3. Bake for 1hour until well risen and golden. A fine skewer inserted in the centre should come out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for a few minutes and the turn out on a wire rack. Slice thickly to serve.

ALTERNATIVES TO BANKRUPTCY BUSINESS

Last month we considered the process of Bankruptcy and the consequences of it. Now let’s consider some alternatives to Bankruptcy.

At the outset I would emphasis that if you are considering taking steps to resolve any financial difficulties that you take proper advice from a financial advisor. This article provides only an outline of possible ways forward and is not written by a financial advisor. A Debt Management Plan is an informal way of regularising your finances should you find yourself in difficulties. An approach is made to your creditors either by yourself or a representative with a proposal to repay your debt but not at the rate at which you had been repaying it. (Lisa) Hi there, omg I really like this page guys! Just a quick concern I have. I have been dating two different fellas both are local and I really like them both. It’s at the point now where I think I need to make a decision one or the other. One fella is really nice and smart and treats me really well but we just don’t have as great a time as when I’m with the other fella. He on the other hand is a pure hottie and we have a great connection and a laugh. But I’m worried he might be a player…. He

asks me to send him racey pictures and I do it but I’m a little concerned he might be doing this with other girls? (T) Well Lisa…. playing the field go you! No harm in keeping your options open! This is a bit of a tough one alright. You seem to want to have your cake and eat it too and that’s pretty normal. For me, chemistry is really important but so is being treated well and with respect. If you’re concerned boyo number 2 is a player then he probably is. Asking for racey

pics lmao!! It’s a bit of craic and it’s good you’re comfortable and confident with him. If the other guy is good to you and treats you well that is well and good but if you’re picking up that you’re not having as good a time with him he may not be for you. I just think you kind of know when you’ve found an all-rounder. My advice…. Keep er lit lol. There’s no rush to make decisions yet. Enjoy being single. I think you’ll know when you know xx

My boyfriend of four and a half years is starting to get on my nerves. It’s at the point where I’d seriously rather go out with the girls and I enjoy a flirt with other men. Going home to him is nearly depressing the life out of me when I’m out. Do you think this could just be a phase? Kate

home to him. It’s not really fair to be out flirting and putting yourself out there either if you have him at home more than likely none the wiser. Maybe suggest some time apart and figure out how you feel. Better that than you wasting his time if you’re not into it anymore!

(T) Aww, poor fella!! It could be a phase, but on the other hand…. Even though you’ve been with him for quite a while I don’t think you should be depressed at the thought of going

(Paul) There’s a girl I like working in the same building as me she’s really gorgeous and always smiling. Thing is I always say hello but I don’t know her

name and I’d love to ask her out but don’t know if she has a boyfriend or not?? (T) Just pull her into an office Paul and get it over with lol. Only joking…. I’d say bite the bullet and start a proper conversation with the girl, ask her name, about what she does in work etc. Women like a confident man. Flirt with her, even a wee compliment might do the trick. And if she has a boyfriend sure there’s plenty more out there. Good Luck let us know how you get on….

Willie Doherty exhibition highlight of cultural year The City Factory Gallery in Derry is set to host a major exhibition of photographic and video works by local artist Willie Doherty.UNSEEN will present approximately 20 photographic and four video works spanning the career of the twotime Turner prize nominee. The exhibition is being presented Matt’s Gallery, London and The Nerve Centre, running from Friday September 27, 2013 until Saturday January 4, 2014 at the City Factory gallery on Patrick Street. The exhibition will provide a critical overview of Doherty’s photographs and videos made on the streets of his native city and its hinterland, presenting new insight into the artist’s working methods and rationale. Since 1985 Doherty, a native of Chamberlain Street, has recorded the way in which the city has been shaped and altered in response to unfolding political events as he explored its streets through the simple acts of walking and looking. The title of the exhibition, UNSEEN, refers to the artist’s selfconscious method of using the camera in a context where it was imperative for him to avoid undue attention and to minimize the risk of being mistaken for a photojournalist or a tourist. The exhibition will reveal how Doherty has used the techniques of photojournalism, documentary landscape photography and the appropriation of images and texts to create a body of photographic work that explores the fine line between fiction and nonfiction.

Derry. UNSEEN will form a core element of the city’s 2013 Derry City of Culture celebrations. Shona McCarthy, Chief Executive of Culture Company 2013 said: “For nearly three decades Willie has been a beacon for the visual arts in Derry and his impact on the international stage has been an inspiration.

UNSEEN will examine how the artist evolved the use of image and text in his early black and white works (1985–92) to engage with the complexities of representing a contested landscape. A number of works from Lapse, a series of black and white photographs made in the 1980s and early 1990s will be shown for the first time; Doherty here investigating how these neglected or ‘lost’ images shift between the present (and our knowledge and understanding of ) the past. D o h e r t y ’s large colour c i b a c h ro m e s (1993–99), exploit the heightened colour of this particular photographic process to create a body of work that plays with the promise of narrative potential, as the images oscillate unsteadily between the staged and the found, the before and after. As part of this unique exhibition, Doherty will present a new group of photographs made this year in Derry, providing an opportunity for the artist to reflect on how the city has evolved and how his own working methods and processes continue to address the problem of photographing the contemporary city. UNSEEN will showcase a number of Doherty’s most important video installations that place some of Derry’s bestknown and more hidden sites as locations for his narratives. At The End Of The Day (1994) is the earliest video work to be included and highlights Doherty’s interest in the bor-

der roads that surround Derry’s west bank and reveals his early use of circular repetition as a formal and metaphorical device within the video works. The exhibition will include ReRun (2002) a double screen video projection for which Doherty was shortlisted for the Turner Prize in 2003. Ghost Story (2007), which was produced as part of Doherty’s

representation of Northern Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 2007 will be shown for the first time in Derry. Remains (2013), a new video work that Doherty has produced in Derry in 2013 will be included in the exhibition, having debuted at Art Unlimited at Basel 2013. Remains was made in a number of locations in Derry that have been used since the early 1970’s to carry out kneecappings, a form of punishment shooting used to control drug use and other forms of so called ‘anti-social behaviour’. Robin Klassnik, Director of Matt’s Gallery, London, who has worked with the artist since 1990, curates the exhibition with Pearse Moore, Chief Executive of the Nerve Centre,

“At a time when the eyes of the contemporary arts world will be focused on the city as it hosts the Turner Prize, it is fitting that Willie Doherty is having a major exhibition in his home town.” Dr Suzanne Lyle, Head of Visual Arts, at the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, said:

“The Willie Doherty UNSEEN exhibition is an ex-

ceptional opportunity for local audiences to see a really significant body of works by one of Northern Ireland’s most respected contemporary artists. “The themes of the work, which range from 1985 to the present day, will resonate with the people of Derry in particular and this is a rare and wonderful opportunity to see both his photographic work and video pieces together in Northern Ireland. It is an opportunity not to be missed. ” David Alderdice, Director of

British Council Northern Ireland, said: “Willie Doherty’s

UNSEEN is one of the highlights of the year for me! We are so proud to be involved in making this world-class exhibition possible. UNSEEN is a must see.” Pearse Moore, chief executive of the Nerve Centre, which has co-curated the exhibition with

Matts Gallery in London, said:

“The Nerve Centre has a long association with Willie Doherty as a producer of his video work. “For this major retrospective, the City Factory Gallery space has been transformed to house 20 photographic and four video works. The result is spectacular.”

About the Artist Willie Doherty was born in 1959 in Derry, Northern Ireland and was educated at St. Columb’s College. His solo exhibitions include the Dallas Museum of Art (2009), Lenbachhaus, Munich (2007), the Renaissance Society, Chicago (1999), and Tate Liverpool (1998). He has participated in the Biennale di Venezia (2007, 2005, 1993) and the Bienal de São Paulo (2002). In 1994 and 2003, Doherty was shortlisted for the Turner Prize. In 2012 he participated in dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel, Germany. The exhibition will be accompanied by a 250 pp publication, UNSEEN. Colour and duotone photographs will illustrate all of the works Doherty has made in Derry between 1985 and 2013 The publication will re-publish Jean Fisher’s seminal text from 1990 on Doherty’s early photographic works, Seeing Beyond The Pale. Fisher has also written a new text Reflections that provides an overview of how Doherty’s work has evolved and responded to the changing socio-political context in Derry. UNSEEN will include a new text by the internationally renowned Irish author, Colm Tóibín, that reflects on the now invisible border between the North and South

of Ireland. Colm Toibin’s novels include ‘The Master’ and ‘Brooklyn’ and his non-fiction work includes ‘Homage to Barcelona’ and ‘Bad Blood: A Walk Along the Irish Border’. A text by Susan McKay, the award winning Irish journalist and author of the critically acclaimed ‘Bear In Mind These Dead’ will explore the current situation in Derry in the difficult aftermath of the conflict. UNSEEN is a Matt’s Gallery, London and The Nerve Centre, Derry publication, designed by Tony Waddingham. Established in east London in 1979 by Director Robin Klassnik, Matt’s Gallery exists to support artists with the space and time to take risks, test their limits and surprise even their own intentions. By placing equal emphasis on the gestation of the work and the final exhibition, Matt’s Gallery provides the best conditions for experiencing art and challenging audiences Klassnik has worked with Doherty since 1990, when the gallery first commissioned Same Difference, following the British Government’s broadcast media ban on Sinn Fein and seven other proscribed Republican and Loyalist organisations. Matt’s Gallery was the first gallery to commission the artist to make lens based work. Over the past 34 years the gallery has commissioned ambitious work by artists at all stages of their careers including Mike Nelson, Susan Hiller, Willie Doherty, Richard Wilson, Nathaniel Mellors, Lindsay Seers and Jimmie Durham.

Trap’s Ireland record • Matches: 64 • Wins: 26 • Draws: 22 • Defeats 16

Giovanni falls down the Trap door by Aron Hegarty

Giovanni Trapattoni was hailed as ‘best manager in Europe’ by the Football Association of Ireland on his appointment in 2008.

Few could argue with that considering the Italian had won league titles in four different countries and previously managed Bayern Munich, Juventus, Inter Milan, Benfica and Italy. It was a major coup. Ireland had got their man and, with the financial help of businessman Denis O’Brien, the FAI had delivered the ‘world class manager’ they promised. Trapattoni, 74, who last month stood down as Irish boss says he left the team in a better place than he found it.

“Over five years, I think we (he and assistant Marco Tardelli) have achieved a good result,” he said. “We have changed the team, we have improved the ranking, we have moved on players and discovered many others.” Most would agree, factually, he was successful. But how will the Trapattoni era be remembered? In his maiden qualifying campaign for the 2010 World Cup,

he guided Ireland through a group containing Italy, Bulgaria, Montenegro, Cyprus and Georgia to set up a play-off with France.

Only a blatant, but unseen handball from Thierry Henry denied Trapattoni’s brave Irish team a summer in South Africa. The injustice from that playoff had a unifying effect on the players and fans as they rallied behind Trapattoni for Euro 2012 qualification alongside Russia, Slovakia, Macedonia, Armenia and Andorra. However, it was during this campaign that cracks in the Italian’s armour began to show. Frustration among fans grew over his stubborn approach to change, deployment of cautious tactics and questionable team selections. He would, for instance, constantly overlook Premiership stars like Seamus Coleman,

Wes Hoolahan, James McCarthy and James McClean. Off the pitch, he was criticised for falling out with several players such as Andy Reid, Anthony Stokes, Stephen Kelly, Kevin Foley and Darron Gibson. While on the pitch, Ireland’s resistance under Trapattoni looked to be breaking. Russia threatened to cut loose in Dublin before a late fightback made the scoreline look respectable. Then in Moscow, only a Herculean effort (branded the ‘Miracle in Moscow’) from Richard Dunne and Shay Given saved Ireland from pure annihilation. Despite winning the Nations’ Cup, Ireland’s inability to win the ‘big’ matches – evident in the two drawn games against Slovakia – also concerned supporters. Yet through good fortune and luck, which included Armenia’s surprise double over Slovakia, they managed to seal second spot and a favourable play-off with Estonia. As expected, Ireland won over the two legs to qualify for their

first European Championships in 24 years. The ‘cat in the sack’ was as good as it got for Trapattoni. At the Euros, Ireland looked devoid of ideas and out of their depth in a group featuring World and European champions Spain, Italy and Croatia. They exited with no points. Many felt the Irish team was in need of a revamp; an injection of new blood due to an ageing squad and the international retirements of Damien Duff and Given. There were calls for Trapattoni to step down. He stayed after the FAI renewed his contract. Ireland faced a tough 2014 World Cup qualifying group with Germany, Sweden, Austria, Kazakhstan and Faroe Islands. A flattering win in Kazakhstan was followed by a demoralising 1-6 drubbing by Germany in Dublin. The pressure on his position increased. Trapattoni though remained defiant and the FAI stuck by their man. Things looked to have im-

proved when Ireland got a point in Sweden and were unlucky to concede late to Austria. The race for second place was still on. But Ireland bowed out of that race after Sweden’s win at the Aviva Stadium last month all but ended their hopes of making Brazil next summer. Even before the Austria match, the Italian confessed his time was drawing to a close. “I don’t expect after this campaign, to go again with Ireland,” he said. A 1-0 defeat in Vienna left Ireland with only a mathematical possibility of second place. Immediately after the game, Trapattoni said he would wait for the FAI to decide his future. The next morning, they released a statement announcing his departure by mutual consent. His luck had finally run out. On paper, Trapattoni will go down as a managerial success. But in the hearts and minds of the Irish fans, his feats will be remembered for statisitics and box-ticking.

Schmidt set to lead Irish rugby by Aron Hegarty

While the search for the next Irish football manager goes on, a new era under Irish rugby coach Joe Schmidt is about to begin.

“We lost five of our first six games” recalled Schmidt on his poor start as Leinster coach in an interview on RTE’s ‘Today with Sean O’Rouke’. “But what gave me confidence was the players came to me and expressed their faith in what we were doing. They grasped it and took it forward.”

Schmidt, who became head coach in April, will officially take charge of Ireland for their three-match Guinness Series internationals next month. Ireland play Samoa on November 9th, Australia on the 16th and the New Zealand ‘All Blacks’ on the 24th. And all eyes will be focused on how the Irish team fares under the man who masterminded Leinster’s 2011 and 2012 Heineken Cup triumphs.

“I’m really motivated by the challenge,” said 48-year-old Schmidt following his appointment until 2016. “If you’re going to find out what you can bring to a group, what better way then to take on one of the biggest jobs in world rugby? “I’ve had a good look at a lot of Ireland’s players and

we’ll try to improve the performance and make us as competitive as possible.”

He added: “I will be working hard and so will the players to deliver something that will be entertaining and hopefully successful.”

Indeed work hard they will need to. Samoa, who turned over Wales at the Millennium Stadium last

autumn, are currently ranked above Ireland in the latest IRB World Rankings and will provide a stern test for Schmidt’s first game. Australia, despite a series loss to the British & Irish Lions and a disappointing Rugby Championship, will be looking to avenge Ireland’s World Cup win last time the sides met. Then there is the All Blacks... who Ireland have never beat-

en. Last time out, Ireland suffered a record 60-0 humiliation at the hands of the World Champions. This time around, with it being Brian O’Driscoll’s last crack at beating the Kiwis, there will be a lot riding on this eagerly-anticipated fixture. For Schmidt though, the focus is not all on the winning or losing of these tests.

The game which turned the tide was against arch rivals Munster in the Aviva Stadium. Leinster grafted out a tight 13-9 win for the first victory of the Schmidt reign that would later yield two Heineken Cups, an Amlin Challenge Cup and a league title. Three years on from that match, the Kiwi is now Ireland coach and has been tasked with reviving the national team’s fortunes following a poor Six Nations campaign this year. Schmidt says he will use the up-coming internationals to assess the squad ahead of next year’s Six Nations. “It (autumn series) is an opportunity to get to know the players,” he said.

“A number of selections were very tight – which is positive. The group is tried and proven, but with some newer faces as well.” Leicester Tigers’ Niall Morris plus Leinster duo Dave Kearney and Jack McGrath are among the new faces in the extended 42-man training panel. But Schmidt opted to leave Ulster prop Tom Court, centre Darren Cave and scrum-half Paul Marshall out of his first Ireland squad. While notable names such as Andrew Trimble, Craig Gilroy and Felix Jones were not considered due to injury. However, the New Zealander hinted they might have a part to play in the autumn test series as they return to full fitness and resume playing. “There are a number of players who have not yet had many opportunities to make an impression,” he said. “There are also youngsters who have been impressive in the early rounds of the Pro 12 that we’ve left to keep working with their provinces.”

Heading : The big top 2 clash Prediction : collon to nick the win

Art deco v newton heath (vale centre ) Having moved up a division through the back door art deco are finding things a little bit tougher than last year . Having won just one in 3 games they sit mid table . Newton heath having played a game less are sitting with equal points and they will look to capitalise on the game in hand . This could be another tricky tie .

Prediction draw

:

score

Tamnaherin celtic v bentley fc (lettershandoney)

Premier division : MATCH OF THE DAY Westbank united v clifton villa (prehen no 6 ) This encounter has all the makings of a cracking game . Clifton villa and westbank sit at the top of the premier league table . Both teams like to get the ball down and play . With westbank having played a game less than villa its a good opportunity to get they're noses in front . Tight game expected but I'm giving the nod to westbank .

Prediction : westbank to edge it

Creggan swifts v du pont ( lisnagelvin 4 ) Both teams recorded good wins over the weekend . Creggan beating brandywell and du pont heavily defeating

clooney . Both these squads have added good players to their ranks this year so this could be an interesting tie . I think the experience of creggan may just be enough to see off du pont though .

Prediction : creggan swifts win

Rosemount v phoenix (st columbs 2 ) This game won't be as straight forward as most neutral spectators would think . Rosemount are a good footballing side this year and have also added a few men to thir squad . Having beat clifton villa at the weekend they will be full of confidence going into this game . Phoenix however have quality throughout the team and they're in my opinion the team to beat this year . Although its going to be a tough enough game I think phoenix will be too strong for rosemount .

Prediction : phoenix

to win

Strabane athletic v brandywell celtic (prehen no 1) Strabane are finding life extremely tough in the top flight this year . 3 games played with no points gained . They suffered a heavy defeat at the weekend to phoenix and could may face the same again this week against brandywell celtic . Brandywell have played two games . One win and one defeat and they will certainly be looking to move up the table with a win this weekend .

Prediction : easy win for brandywell celtic

Championship : Gransha institute v drumahoe ( lisnagelvin 2)

Gransha institute have hit the ground running this term round . Played two and won 2 . it seems that they are going to be one of the teams to be this year . Drumahoe on the other hand have played three with 0 points collected . This could be an easy victory for gransha institute .

Prediction : gransha institute pick up easy 3 points

Sion swifts v collon celtic (strabane) This looks to be the game of the day in the championship . You have a big physical side in sion and a good footballing side in collon . Sion have played 2 games picking up maximum points and collon having played only one has done the same . I'm thinking the passing game of the collon may just be a bit too much for sion on this occasion .

Tamnaherin will strongly fancy themselves here against a side who sit at the foot of the table . They are a good physical side who can play a bit of football to . Bentley will not be looking forward to travel out here for this one .

Hml having played 2 games are sitting with four points . They are an experienced team in this league having just missed out last year . They will be hoping to improve on last year and go all the way this time out . Phoenix are new to the league and not much is known about them . They sit at the foot of the table having played two games with just one point .

Prediction : hml win

Oxford v city colts ( thornhill ) City colts are a team that's played in the northwest afternoon league for the last 10 years . They are another team who like to pass the ball . The problem they seem to face at the minute is leaking goals . They have played 2 games and conceded 7 goals . If they want to stand any chance of dominating this league they need to strengthen up in defense . They face a young oxford team who will want to take advantage of this . On there day they can be a match for any team .

Prediction : city colts Prediction : easy win to scrape the win for the tams

First division : Oakleaf celtic v metro fc ( leafair) Having just entered the league this year , metro are finding their feet gradually over the last few games . They can play some nice football at times and will fancy to take maximum points here . Oakleaf however are a very experienced side and can cause a few problems here .

Prediction : draw

Culmore v foyle athletic (culmore ) Gerry doherty must be feeling very hard done by at the minute . His young culmore team has been playing great football but have only managed 2 points from 4 games . They played an experienced city colts last week and held there own up until they went down to ten men . Foyle athletic are a side that's been playing in the sat morning league for years . although they are a shadow of the team they used to be they can at times play some attractive football at times . This should be a pretty even match but the youth of culmore might just come out on top .

hml v phoenix colts (templemore cenPrediction : culmore tral ) to win .

Saturday Morning League First Division

City Colts 6-3 Culmore Watching City Colts this season should come with some sort of government warning – not for the faint hearted. The 2 games they have played so far have yielded an amazing 17 goals. And the former North West Premier league side maintained their unbeaten start to the Saturday Morning League. However, despite the score line this was a very competitive game with the Culmore youngsters more than holding their own up until they were reduced to 10 men. The Colts started the game very brightly despite missing a number of key players and indeed having no subs. But it was Culmore who took the lead when the classy Matthew Merrigan netted the open-

ing goal in the 10th minute. Five minutes later Gary Curran equalised for the Colts with an excellent solo effort. The home side doubled their lead when the dangerous Eoghan ‘Moo’ Moore scored another wonderful trade mark goal. The ever industrious Micky McDaid made it 3-1 to City Colts at halftime. Culmore manager Gerry Doherty must have instilled some confidence in his side with his half-time team talk as Culmore came out fired up after the break. Danger man Merrigan pulled one back for Culmore in the 55th minute, then completed his hat-trick 10 minutes later to level the score at 3-3. Colt’s veteran Eoin Kearney put his side back in the lead with a rare headed goal in the 78th minute. The Colts’ management team decided to move pacey wingman Conan McGowan up front and he rewarded them with 2 late goals to leave the final score 6-3.

Derry Back To Winning Ways. Derry City recorded their first home league win since June with a 2-0 win against struggling Bray Wanderers on Friday night. And although Bray probably had more goal scoring chances than City, Declan Devine’s men will be relieved to secure a very valuable 3 points in the quest for European football next season.

Despite a run of recent bad results, Derry looked to have a spring in their step throughout the opening exchanges with young Ryan Curran making his first competitive start for the club looking particularly lively. And it was the home side who opened the scoring when the ever impressive Simon Madden made one of his trade mark forages down the right wing before his cross was rifled into the back of the Bray net by David McDaid in the 6th minute. The sparcely populated Brandywell may have anticipated that this would open the floodgates, but unfortunately Bray had other ideas. The away side would go on to have 7 attempts at goal compared to Derry’s 4 in the first period. Ismahil Akinade was to prove a particular thorn in Derry’s side throughout the remainder of the first half, and he saw a wonderful 20 yard volley superbly saved by Gerard Doherty in the 14th minute. Ten minutes later the same player forced Doherty into another good save after a well struck shot following a scintillating run down the right flank. McDaid livened up what was turning into quite a scrappy affair when he ran all over 60 yards with the ball before a Bray full back cover tackle brought the run to a halt. Bray responded with a classic counter attack. The impressive Dempsey in midfield found Waters who blasted high and wide.

Derry spurned a number of decent chances midway through the first half when Patterson fired a volley wide from 10 yards. Straight after that McDaid was also thwarted after a jinxy run from Molloy into the Bray box. And minutes later Bray keeper Quigley saved again as Simon Madden volleyed with the outside of his right boot. In the 39th minute Bray striker Waters had a fairly easy chance to level the scores, but again he failed to hit the target with a poorly struck volley as he bore down on Doherty in goal. As the half-time whistle approached Shane McEleney turned defence into attack as he carried the ball a good 40 yards to set up another Derry half chance, which was again thwarted by the Bray rear

guard. Despite that, the home side will have gone in happy enough to be 1-0 up at halftime. Derry came out the brighter side after the break and danger man Rory Patterson scuffed a shot just wide in the 49th minute. Minutes later Barry Molloy inch-perfect through ball saw Patterson through one on one with the keeper, but the Strabane man’s powerfully hit shot cannoned off the crossbar. Patrick McEleney was introduced in 57th minute, replacing Eoghan Osborne who was having a particularly torrid time at left back by Bray’s Ismahil Akinade. The home side looked much more threatening with McEleney operating in midfield. Patterson, too, was growing in confidence and

made a couple of dangerous runs into the heart of the Bray defence. That man Akinade then had a couple of decent chances to level the scores, but he headed straight at Doherty in the 59th minute then drilled another shot wide in the 64th minute. In the 75th minute Quigley made a fantastic double save as first Patterson then McDaid, with the rebound, fired shots goal bound. Seconds later Patrick McEleney saw a 25 yard effort fly just wide of the Bray right post. By this stage Derry had their tales up. McEleney slotted a defence splitting ball through to Michael Rafter who buried it into the bottom left hand corner to double Derry’s lead. In that moment the boy became

a man. This was to prove decisive and the home side saw out the remainder of the game winning 2-0. Referee: Paul McLaughlin was mostly anonymous throughout the game, as a good referee should be Entertainment: 6/10 An often scrappy affair with poor finishing from both sides. Bray were the better side in the first half, but Derry deserved the points with their second half superiority Man of the match: Gerard Doherty – made a couple of first class saves to keep Bray scoreless

Player ratings: Gerard Doherty : 8/10 Clean sheet from Derry’s number one and his team’s best player on the night Eoghan Osborne: 5/10 Had the misfortune of trying to mark Bray’s Akinade, and his misery was brought to an end when he was substituted in the 58th minute Dean Jarvis: 7/10 A solid game, first at centre-back then at left back for the unfortunate Osborne Shane McEleney: 8/10 Coolness personified at the back and one decent forage forward Simon Madden: 7/10 Not a vintage game for the classy right back, but still very good.

Crossed for McDaid’s goal and forced Quigley into one good save Michael Duffy: 7/10 a decent night’s work from the youngster, capped by scoring the winning goal Barry Molloy: 8/10 a great game from Derry’s captain first in midfield then unflappable at centre-half for most of the second half Ruaidhri Higgins: 6/10 a quiet game for the Limavady man. Attempted a couple of wayward Hollywood passes when the simple ball might have been more effective David McDaid: 8/10 scored the opening goal and was always looking for work throughout the 90 mins. Made a couple of great runs at the Bray defence with the ball too Ryan Curran: 7/10 the youngster didn’t look out of place in his first competitive start. A kid with a bright future Rory Patterson: 7/10 A quiet first half. Much more dangerous in the second and should have scored Subs – Patrick McEleney 8/10 Derry were a much more effective unit when McEleney came on Michael Rafter: not on long enough to be rated Raymond Foy: not on long enough to be rated
