board chair’s letter

Celebrating Collective Success Dear members, Helen Keller said, “Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” This philosophy of collective and coordinated action proved true for Omicron Delta Kappa this past year. In FY 2019, our Society saw the single best fundraising year in its history, securing more than $1.5 million in outright contributions and documented planned gifts. In addition, the organization welcomed more than 800 new supporters to our Honor Roll of Donors. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for investing in leadership and sharing in the vision of our organization. Gratitude is the word that comes to mind when reflecting on the accomplishments of this past year, which are evidenced in this issue of The Circle. Our success comes from the support of many. With your partnership, our Society has been able to do the following during the 2018-19 year: • Recognize more than 7,300 new students with membership in our Society; • Provide resources to the 317 circles across the country and establish five new circles; • Award scholarships to 35 student leaders; • Develop an ethical leadership challenge program; • Host a governance conclave for our collegiate delegates;

• Enter into new partnerships with organizations such as City Year and Outward Bound to provide post-baccalaureate leadership opportunities for our student members; and • Secure ongoing funding for scholarships, extension to new circles, and the national leadership conference. Transformation is the word that fills my mind as I look ahead. In the upcoming year, we look forward to hosting our now annual National Leadership Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, from June 4-7, 2020. We will continue to support our circles and our members by offering innovative marketing materials, leadership resources, scholarships, and awards to support continued education and development. As we embark on the 106th year in our history and collective leadership journey, I invite you to join me in supporting the vision of Omicron Delta Kappa: excellence in leadership and character development. Yours in O∆K,

• Produce three issues of The Circle; • Offer the gift-of-membership to students with financial need; • Support National Day of Service projects in the communities of host institutions; • Provide leadership development grants to 12 circles;

Throughout my years of soccer, I have been faced with multiple injuries, causing me to create deep relationships with my doctors. One of the main reasons I am pursuing a career in medicine is because of the positive influence these doctors have played in my athletic and personal life. I want to be able to have that same positive impact on my patients when I am a doctor, specializing in sports medicine. —Andres Maeso

celebrating philanthropy

April 9, 2020

Thank you

O∆K's annual National Day of Giving will be held on Thursday, April 9, 2020. The National Day of Giving is an opportunity to share your leadership journey, reflect on your experience with O∆K, or promote programs that are particularly meaningful to you. Held in conjunction with our National Day of Service, we encourage members around the country to celebrate leadership and give back.

Kaye LaFollette and J. David Gibbs Kaye LaFollette (Belmont University, 2018) and J. David Gibbs (University of Richmond, 1974) recently made a gift of $125,000 to support the programs of Omicron Delta Kappa. Their gift will help fund the annual national leadership conference. In addition to establishing this new fund, Kaye and David have been long-time philanthropic partners with O∆K by supporting the Annual Fund as well as technology upgrades for the National Headquarters. David served previously as a member and officer of O∆K’s Board of Trustees. When asked why O∆K is important to them, Kaye and David shared, “Since the founding of our nation as a free people, leadership has been a critical ingredient to our shared success. The need for the development and recognition of servant leadership has never diminished, and today, as always, the need is great. O∆K is the premier leadership education and development organization for colleges and universities. Having had the privilege of becoming O∆K members ourselves and the blessing of learning from and working with some truly great leaders, we know well how important it is to create, develop, and nurture opportunities for student leaders to emerge and grow. This requires the commitment of time, talents, and gifts.

The need for the development and recognition of servant leadership has never diminished, and today, as always, the need is great.

This form of stewardship is especially important to ensure that our nation can continue to pursue our common goal of becoming a better society and be a beacon of hope to our own citizens and the rest of the world. That is why we consider it a solemn duty, and an honor, to invest in O∆K’s future. Please join us.” The Circle • Annual Report 2019 | 29

Planning for Our Future A message from the President and CEO Dear Member, Lately, I’ve been thinking about my estate plans and those that I love. My first grandchild is on her way, and there is a lot to consider. I can certainly leave money for her in my will, identify her as a beneficiary for one of my life insurance policies, or I can set up a family trust to provide funds to her and my children at an appropriate time. I want to be able to leave a legacy and provide for generations of my family long after I’m gone. I’ve also been thinking about the future of another one of my great loves: Omicron Delta Kappa. Our future is bright, but we have some work to do to ensure that O∆K will continue to thrive. As of June 30, 2019, our Society’s endowment was valued at $1.72 million. That may not seem like a large amount given the history of our organization. However, with investment earnings and the generosity of many individuals, our endowment has grown by $340,882 in the last year. In addition, another $867,000 of planned gifts were pledged in FY 2019. The majority of these planned gifts have been designated for endowment funds benefitting scholarships, preservation and maintenance of our historic train station, and the existing programs of O∆K including the National Leadership Conference. These gifts reflect the faith of our donors in the future and promise of our Society’s mission to identify, honor, and develop the campus leaders of today into the community leaders of tomorrow.

I invite members to consider making a provision for O∆K in your estate plans by making a philanthropic statement of faith in the founding and continuing principles of O∆K: • leadership at the collegiate level should be recognized; • members should be selected based on exemplary conduct, unselfish service, and success achieved in worthy undertakings; and • leaders from all parts of the campus community should collaborate together on matters of shared interest and concern. Our staff can assist members by crafting philanthropic plans to establish scholarships, creating leadership development program funds, and preserving the historic National Headquarters building. Please consider joining me and other members of our Society in planning for Omicron Delta Kappa’s future. Yours in Leadership,

Tara S. Singer, Ed.D. President and Chief Executive Officer

Stephen Dominy, a 2007 initiate of the Mercer University Circle, is the 2020 National Leadership Conference Chair and a member of the Omicron Delta Kappa Board of Trustees. As an undergraduate, Stephen served as the MU Circle’s vice president of membership where he focused on recruitment, engagement, and development of members. He reconnected with O∆K in 2014 when he became an advisor for the Austin Peay State University Circle. Stephen also coordinated the “Circles for Soldiers” service project during the 2018 Biennial National Convention and Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tenn. Currently, Stephen is the associate director of fraternity and sorority life at Texas Christian University.

Omicron Delta Kappa allowed me the opportunity to turn my knowledge into practical experience through the collegiate journey and my alumni experience. I also give my time, talents, and resources to give back to the organization that invested in me. To me, it is important to give back because the future of our organization depends on
