Paving the Way

Ushering In A New Era Of Leadership

On behalf of the O∆K Board of Trustees, I wish each of you a healthy and happy start to 2024.

As I reflect on the activities from the prior year, I am continually reminded of the importance of our Society’s mission, vision, and values. O∆K is unique in its mandate to recognize and develop leaders across multiple generations, while emphasizing the importance of service, collaboration, scholarship, integrity, and inclusivity. The importance of these tenets cannot be understated in this day and age. These sentiments were echoed recently by former US Secretary of Transportation, Anthony Foxx, upon his receipt of the Laurel Crowned Circle Award, O∆K’s highest honor, when he said that “the world seems upside down; … the call for leadership is very much alive.”

This prior year was a year of transition for O∆K. Jennifer L. Waller, Ph.D. took over the reins as the new President and CEO of the Society on July 1st, and we are excited to have her on board. In that vein, I want to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to Tara S. Singer, Ed.D. for her 10 years of dedicated service and outstanding leadership to O∆K. Under her guidance, OΔK directed many significant initiatives, including the combining of the Society and educational foundation and overseeing the capital campaign. Singer leaves behind a legacy of excellence that will continue to inspire each of us for years to come.

I want to also thank Sandy Thurmond, who concluded her term as Board Chair in June of 2023. I am grateful for Sandy’s steadfast leadership, dedication, and guidance.

And finally, I would like to recognize Willie L. Banks, O∆K’s Board Chair in 2021-2022, whose leadership as the co-chair of the CEO Search Committee was invaluable.

As we look ahead to 2024, I am energized by the opportunities that lie before us. Our Board continues to work on key strategic topic areas that include member engagement, our O∆K business model, fundraising, and our national operations. These discussions and strategic steps will continue to require our collective expertise, passion, and dedication. As we look ahead to the challenges and opportunities that lie on the horizon, let us remain

committed to the principles that unite us. Together, we will continue to chart a course to define a society of inclusivity and belonging.

O∆K has more than 380,000 living leaders that have been initiated across more than 300 Circles. This size of the O∆K network is unprecedented and can serve as an extraordinary resource for you, along with the many benefits that O∆K offers. At the same time, membership also carries a responsibility for each one of us. It is my call to action for you to help our Society across three key areas:

First of all, I encourage each of you to continue to help recognize others who reflect O∆K’s leadership values, especially if those individuals may come from nontraditional areas of campus or community life. This lens of inclusion will help to strengthen our membership.

Second, and especially for our lifetime members, please get re-engaged with the Society and encourage at least one of your O∆K friends or classmates to do so as well. This engagement can take many forms, including support of your local or college circle as an Alumni Advisor, or at the National level as a volunteer.

Third, and to the extent that you can, please make an effort to support O∆K with a donation. These monies contribute to the financial well-being and long-term viability of the Society, not to mention our ability to continue to provide benefits.

In closing, I extend my deepest appreciation to each of you for your invaluable contributions to our organization. Your leadership, wisdom, and commitment to our cause are the driving forces behind our success. As we move forward, let us carry the momentum of 2023 into the new year, with the shared vision of achieving even greater heights.

Thank you for your continued support and dedication

Warm regards,

2023 MEET THE

Leaders OF THE YEAR

Each year, Omicron Delta Kappa recognizes its most outstanding student leaders with the Gen. Russell E. Dougherty National Leader of the Year honors. This program is named in memory of Gen. Russell E. Dougherty (University of Louisville, 1947). Gen. Dougherty, a one-time staff member with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, served as commander in chief of the Strategic Air Command and director of strategic target planning for the U.S. Air Force.

Individual circles nominate a student to be their Circle Leader of the Year. These students receive a certificate and are invited to apply for National Leader of the Year honors. The Society recognizes a student in each of the five pillars of campus life celebrated by O∆K: academics and research, athletics, service to campus and community, communications, and creative and performing arts. Each of these individuals receives a $1,000 award. The committee also selects one student to receive the Gen. Russell E. Dougherty National Leader of the Year Award, which comes with a $4,000 prize.

2023 CLAY AND CIRCLE GRANTS

Empowering Collegiate Leaders

Omicron Delta Kappa established the Clay Leadership Development Initiative Grants to honor long-time executive director Maurice A. Clay (University of Kentucky, 1954) upon his retirement in 1988. Since the creation of the fund, the endowment for the Clay Grants program has grown to more than $200,000. This endowment supports a range of grants for circles (from $300 – $700) to offer a new or expanded leadership development program on campus. Two of the Clay Grants have been specifically designated to finance activities related to embracing diversity, equity, and inclusivity in leadership. In addition, endowed program funds have been established for other circles to help underwrite their work.

Grant recipients are selected in the fall of each academic year, and the circle has the following calendar year to utilize the award. All programs or projects, including service activities, are required to have leadership development components. Circles are expected to use the grant dollars to engage other individuals on campus, beyond the circle’s membership, to raise the awareness of the Society. Circles are encouraged to collaborate with other groups on campus or in the community to complete their grant-funded activity.

2022 Laurel Crowned Circle Award

S ecretary r obert M. G ate S

Former U.S. Secretary of Defense Robert M. Gates (William & Mary, 2015) was honored as the 2022 Omicron Delta Kappa Laurel Crowned Circle recipient at a ceremony hold on December 2, 2022 on the campus of William & Mary.

Secretary Gates earned his bachelors degree in history from William & Mary. He also earned his master’s degree in history from Indiana University, and his doctorate in Russian and Soviet history from Georgetown University. In addition, Gates was awarded an honorary Doctorate of Humane Letters from the College of William & Mary in 1998.

A Life of Public Service

Secretary Gates served 27 years as an intelligence professional with the Central Intelligence Agency, moving from an entry-level employee to serving as the Director from 1991-1993. In 2006, he was confirmed as the 22nd U.S. Secretary of Defense, under President George W. Bush, and was asked to continue under President Barak Obama. He is the only Secretary of Defense in U.S. history to be asked to remain in office by a new president. In addition, he is the only individual to hold both positions of the Secretary of Defense and Director of Central Intelligence.

Gates has also served in a variety of academic roles, including President of Texas A&M University from 2002-2006 and as the current Chancellor of the College of William & Mary. He has also served as the President of National Eagle Scout Association and the Boy Scouts of America.

A Lasting Legacy

Secretary Gates continues to serve as the Founder & Chairman of the Gates Global Policy Center, focused on solving national security issues, convening leaders to tackle difficult problems, as well as providing proposals to update policies, organizational structures, and legislation. Gates has written four books, including “Duty: Memoirs of a Secretary at War” and “A Passion for Leadership: Lessons on Change and Reform from Fifty Years of Public Service.”

Secretary Gates’ life and career are a testament to his dedication, integrity, and deep commitment to public service and leadership. It is a fitting reminder that one individual can have a tremendous impact when guided by a sense of purpose and a commitment to making the world a better place. He is an exceptional recipient of the Omicron Delta Kappa Laurel Crowned Circle Award. ●

Leaving a Lasting Legacy

Former University of Tennessee President

Joseph E. “Joe” Johnson (University of Tennessee Knoxville, 1968) passed away September 29, 2023, at the age of 90.

Johnson leaves a lasting legacy as a longtime supporter of O∆K. He was UT system president from 1990 to 1999. He returned to serve as interim president from 2003 to 2004. After retiring as president in 1999, he has served as president emeritus and remained active in building and maintaining relationships with alumni and donors, serving on community boards and consulting with University leaders.

Johnson was known for his popularity with the UT Alumni Association and his acumen as a fundraiser and advocate for the University. He is considered the architect of the UT System structure, created in 1968. In 2014, the UT Board of Trustees presented him with its Lifetime Achievement Award. O∆K honors his legacy and is grateful for his generous support.

O∆K FACES THE FUTURE BY RECOUNTING ITS PAST

“The lamps are going out all over Europe, we shall not see them lit again in our life-time.”

This statement, made by British Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey to a friend on August 3, 1914, was uttered on the eve of Great Britain entering World War One. I continually marvel that a group of 15 students, faculty, and staff at Washington and Lee University had the temerity and vision to found a society on December 3, 1914, “to weld campus leaders into a constructive force for service on the campus,” according to one of O∆K’s founders, Rupert Nelson Latture.

Lessons from World War One are top of mind for me this month as I just concluded teaching an Honors Course on the subject last semester at Coastal Carolina University. The United States would keep itself from engaging in WWI for nearly 3 years from the time of Sir Edward Grey’s dire prediction, but the specter of an international conflict—with casualties and destruction on a scale never before seen—cast a pall across the entire globe. This historical context and its significance to today’s challenges should not be lost on any of us committed to the future of Omicron Delta Kappa.

Our world at present continues to see conflict, but nothing on the scale of what began the same year as our organization. While the challenges of today might seem even more daunting, they should never be considered insurmountable. I hope you’ll join me in considering what can be done.

First, we need more initiates, to be sure, not only for the financial stability of O∆K now and in the future—but more importantly—to provide more students and alumni with all the collateral benefits which accrue with membership in this unique organization. In this age and with a generation not nearly as inclined to be “joiners,” we must improve our financial standing and shore up our fiscal future. Each one of you can help in recruiting new members to our ranks. You can also help by encouraging those institutions whose circles may have lapsed into inactivity to recognize the incredible asset that is a vibrant, growing

O∆K circle on campus. Perhaps your home institution is one of those inactive circles. Please do what you can to encourage them to re-engage.

Second, I call on all members to not only personally support O∆K and its mission but also to spread the news of its reach and impact with others. Recently, I had the opportunity of presiding over the installation of our newest circle at the University of North Carolina-Pembroke, a vibrant and mission-focused campus in rural North Carolina. UNC-Pembroke was founded in 1887 to preserve the Lumbee nation, its culture, traditions, and practices, all while affording the local population access to post-secondary opportunities. Last November, 52 initiates pledged to uphold the ideals of O∆K in a beautiful and well-executed ceremony in Pembroke, North Carolina. It was incredibly moving to see these new members—along with their colleagues, families, and friends—celebrate this signal accomplishment. The entire experience reinforced for me, once again, that what O∆K stands for and what it means to its members and host institutions really does matter in the lives of our members.

And finally, the challenges we face as a membership organization are not exclusive to O∆K. Entities like ours are all facing dwindling numbers and reduced revenue. But we’re not like other organizations either. Our mission is unique, our vision clear, and our impact undeniable.

Just as the founders did in 1914 when lamps went out and things appeared especially dim, they leapt into the breach and provided a glimmer of hope based on lessons of leadership grounded in collaboration and inclusivity. We have much to live up to when one considers the courage and foresight of these original founders. As we look toward the future, help us keep O∆K as viable, vibrant, and impactful for the century ahead as it has been for the past 110 years. ●

Michael Benson, president and professor of history at Coastal Carolina University, is chair-elect of the O∆K Board of Trustees

In 2023, we announced with immense gratitude the successful conclusion of our capital campaign. On July 1, 2016, Omicron Delta Kappa launched “The Campaign for Our Second Century” with a goal to raise $5.1 million. As a result of early success with securing planning gifts, the goal was increased to $5.6 million. Together, we not only reached our fundraising goal, but we have exceeded it, raising more than $5.7 million. When we embarked on this journey, we set ambitious goals, believing in the fundamental mission of ΟΔΚ. Throughout this capital campaign, we have witnessed incredible dedication and generosity and cannot express enough how deeply moved we are by everyone’s support. While the campaign may have reached its conclusion, the spirit of giving and collaboration that it embodies remain an integral part of ΟΔΚ’s DNA.

Shaping the Future of O∆K

I am thrilled to step into the President and Chief Executive Officer role at Omicron Delta Kappa. This illustrious organization has a long history of celebrating leadership, and I am excited to build on its solid foundation as we navigate a complex world.

For the past 109 years, ΟΔΚ has sought to recognize exceptional leaders, focusing on the collegiate environment. This is core to our mission; however, we have an opportunity to redefine what it means to be a lifetime member. For the past several months, I have been contemplating how ΟΔΚ can provide the network, connections, and development members need after they leave the collegiate community.

I envision an ΟΔΚ that embraces learning and belonging. As leaders, we must embrace curiosity and exploration and have the courage to evolve into better humans. Let us commit to building a society that encourages lifelong learning, where we support each other and engage in dialogue that challenges us to think beyond ourselves.

As members of ΟΔΚ, you belong to a community committed to leadership excellence. This society

should be a place and space where your contributions matter, where you are celebrated for your uniqueness, and where you find the support to thrive. Let’s cultivate a sense of belonging that transcends boundaries and fosters an environment where every member feels valued and empowered. Together, we have an opportunity to shape the future of ΟΔΚ. It is both exciting and challenging. I hope you will join me as we continue to build our society where leadership is not just a title but a force for positive change.

I am immensely honored to lead this extraordinary society and look forward to working with each of you to shape Omicron Delta Kappa’s future.

Yours in O∆K,

From the President and Chief Executive Officer 66 | odk.org
