SARAH BENSON, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF HAILEY ICE, INC.
All of us who live in and visit the Wood RIver Valley are an integral part of the fabric of our community no matter where you come from or how long you have lived here.
The Wood River Valley is an incredibly special place, and as a community member I am pleased to be able to be a part of The Chamber that encompasses all things that make this place home. I am privileged to work alongside a dedicated board of directors who all share a common goal of serving our community and visitors. Our Executive Director, Mike McKenna, is second to none and truly leads the vision of The Chamber of the Wood River Valley.
I first came to Sun Valley in 1972 at the age of three from Kentucky. My grandfather worked for the railroad and had enjoyed vacations out here with his family in the 1950s. He knew that my sister Amanda and I would love it, too. Fishing, hiking, exploring, ice skating. We did it all and I knew from a very early age that I wanted to call this place home. I have been fortunate to live here for the past thirty-three years with my husband Chris and our children, Morgan and Zachary.
All of us who live in and visit the Wood River Valley are an integral part of the fabric of our community no matter where you come from or how long you have lived here. The Chamber is committed to supporting the community and its growth in Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum and Sun Valley, while ensuring that small-town life never leaves us.We are committed to helping our community to grow and expand and to support events which make us who we are. The Chamber sponsors such events as our hometown Fourth of July parade and fireworks display, the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot and the Chili Cook-off. We are very excited to also support the Hailey Rocks Summer Music Series at Hop Porter Park this year, so please make sure to put that on your bucket list! Of course, The Chamber will continue to manage the Welcome Center in Hailey, celebrate new businesses with ribbon cuttings, and host Business After Hours events for our members throughout the Valley. We will continue to publish our award-winning Discover the Wood River Valley Guide. The Guide is distributed throughout Idaho as well as nationally and advocates for Wood River Valley businesses with local county and government officials.
We are a small but mighty team and we welcome all of you to be part of our Chamber community and to let us show you all that we have to offer. Please stop by the Welcome Center in Hailey as you embark on this great adventure into this place that we call home.
Sincerely,
Sarah Benson Board President

Numbers can help tell the story of a place. Here’s the nittygritty about Blaine County, Idaho, and the communities of the Wood River Valley, in particular.
Located about 65 miles north of Twin Falls, Blaine County covers 2,661 square miles and stretches from the Salmon River drainage in the north to the Snake River in the south. The 137-mile-long Big Wood River drains the central portion of the county. Approximately 80% of the county’s land area is protected federal and state land. There are 82 peaks above 10,000 feet, the tallest of which is Hyndman Peak (elev. 12,008’). Mountain ranges include the Pioneer, Boulder, White Cloud, Smoky, and Sawtooth Mountains. There are 62 lakes in the county, including two-mile-long Alturas Lake south of Stanley and numerous small alpine lakes.
Blaine County’s total population was 24,872 in 2021, an increase of nearly 20% over 2010. The population is 94.9% white and 21.7% Hispanic. Blaine County’s people are highly educated relative to the rest of the state and the nation, with more than 40% of residents having earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. 2021 per capita income in Blaine County ($40,739) was the highest of Idaho’s 44 counties, and the county’s median household income ($70,021) exceeded that of the state by 11% and the nation as a whole by 3%.
Blaine County: (2021 pop.: 24,872) is in south-central Idaho. The central and populous part of the county, the Wood River Valley, is part of the Big Wood River drainage. Idaho State Highway 75 runs north-south through the county, which includes the cities of Bellevue, Carey, Hailey, Ketchum, and Sun Valley. Many of those visiting the county stay in one of 6,426 seasonal housing units, which represent 30% of the total housing stock. Ketchum and Sun Valley lead the county in seasonal housing, with 38% and 68% seasonal housing, respectively. co.blaine.id.us • 206 1st Ave. S., Hailey, ID 83333
Bellevue: (2021 pop.: 2,568) is one of Blaine County’s smaller cities, located approximately 2 miles south of Hailey. Founded in 1882, Bellevue is the agricultural center of the county. bellevueidaho.us • 115 E. Pine St., • Bellevue, ID 83313 • (208) 7882128
Carey: (2021 pop.: 691) is the smallest city in Blaine County. Founded in 1883, Carey has a strong ranching heritage and is the home of the Blaine County Fairgrounds. The city sits in the agricultural eastern portion of the county at the intersection of U.S. Routes 20 and 26. cityofcarey.org 20482 N. Main St., • Carey, ID 83320 • (208) 823-4045
Hailey: (2021 pop.: 9,463) is the county seat of Blaine County and its largest city. Founded in 1882, it was one of three cities in the running for state capital when Idaho gained statehood in 1890 (Boise ultimately received the honor). Hailey is home to Friedman Memorial Airport, Wood River High School and Middle School, and the Blaine County campus of the College of Southern Idaho. haileycityhall.org 115 S. Main St., Ste. Ketchum: (2021 pop.: 3,588) is a major tourist destination and commercial center adjacent to Sun Valley. Situated 12 miles north of Hailey, Ketchum is home to Sun Valley Resort’s Warm Springs and River Run lodges as well as the private Sun Valley Community School, The Community Library, and the Wood River YMCA. In a nod to Ketchum’s mining history, the city was originally named “Leadville” when founded in 1888. ketchumidaho.org • 480 East Ave. N. • Ketchum, ID 83340 • (208) 726-3841
Sun Valley: (2021 pop.: 1,814) is the city made famous by Sun Valley Resort—the nation’s first destination ski resort. The resort’s primary ski areas are Bald Mountain (elev. 9,150’) and Dollar Mountain (elev. 6,638’). The city was incorporated in 1947, 11 years after the resort opened in 1936. sunvalleyidaho.gov • 81 Elkhorn Rd. • Sun Valley, ID 83353 • (208) 622-4438

We’re proud of the people and businesses that make up The Chamber of Hailey and the Wood River Valley and we love to share their news and events.
We market through our new website, our weekly e-Newsletters, popular Facebook page and our growing Instagram account. We celebrate our members through our nationally distributed Guide and our Chamber Corner columns in the Wood River Weekly. We help create and pay for print, radio, television and online advertisements. And we do lots of old-school, person-to-person marketing, too.
Each year we publish our award-winning Discover the Wood River Valley Guide. Designed to look and read like a lifestyle magazine, our annual Guide is produced locally and helps visitors and folks interested in moving here learn about all our area has to offer. The Guide stars our Chamber members and gets sent all over the country as well as read thousands of times online.
Joining The Chamber is a tax-deductible business expense. That’s why being part of The Chamber of Hailey and the Wood River Valley and taking advantage of all we have to offer is one of the best marketing deals your business or nonprofit will ever find.
One of the most rewarding things The Chamber does is to connect people. We help create relationships amongst fellow business and community members, especially at our two monthly events, Wake Up with The Chamber (on the second Tuesday morning) and our “BAHs” or Business After Hours (on the third Thursday evening). They are always free, open to the public and a fun way to make new connections, hear local news and catch up with familiar faces.
Every time you support The Chamber or our members you are making a direct and positive impact on our community. You help thousands of local employees—your family, friends and neighbors—who work at Chamber businesses and nonprofits. You support lots of Chamberbacked events that make life here better, from the 5B Father’s Day Bash to bringing back the Hailey Days of the Old West Rodeo, from the Fourth of July fireworks to Trailing of the Sheep. We also help thousands of visitors at the Welcome Center in Hailey and answer phone calls about everything from snow and flooding issues to the best places to camp, ski, hike, shop, eat, drink and be merry.
Most people don’t realize that The Chamber is a nonprofit with the simple goal of helping our businesses and community. We appreciate your support and having you be part of the solution.

CRATERS OF THE MOON CELEBRATES 100 YEARS!
BY MIKE MCKENNA P HOTOS COURTESY OF CRATERS OF THE MOON NATIONAL MONUMENT & PRESERVE
Craters of the Moon has a big birthday to celebrate. The National Monument & Preserve turns 100 on May 2, 2024, and the Centennial will be honored with special events from May through September.
“There’s a bit of awe and a bit of wonder in a landscape that’s pretty much unlike any other place on earth,” Wade Vagias said.
Wade is the Superintendent for Craters of the Moon as well as the Hagerman Fossil Beds National Monument and Minidoka National Historic Site. Wade’s career in the National Park Service includes time working in Washington, D.C., Yellowstone and Bryce Canyon before landing in Idaho’s Snake River Plain. But since taking over “Craters” (as locals call it) in 2015 it’s clear that southern Idaho’s beloved—and often overlooked—National Monument & Preserve has become a magical place for him.
“It’s quite unlike any other place in the lower 48 states”
The Monument & Preserve now covers over 750,000 acres, having been expanded by four different Presidents over the last century. The core features of the park were created by eight major lava eruptions over the last 15,000 years. Crater’s central feature is the “Great Rift,” a 52-milelong crack in the earth’s crust. Although the terrain looks barren and brutal to navigate, it’s actually teeming with life.
Wade Vagias, Park Service Superintendent
“It looks like a barren wasteland at first glance,” Wade said. “But it’s really a vibrant landscape that’s in perpetual change.”
More than 750 types of plants can be found at Craters as well as a wide variety of wildlife: from bats to bobcats, coyotes to cottontail rabbits, to all kinds of birds. There are even a couple species that can only be found at Craters of the Moon. A subspecies of the Great Basin pocket mouse and yellow pine chipmunk are found nowhere else on the planet.
With a landscape that literally looks out of this world, NASA has used Craters to help prepare for space exploration for over 50 years. This includes training for the Apollo 14 crew whose successful mission to the Moon involved the first golf balls ever hit in space.
Photo descriptions: Far left, Spatter Cones Trail. Left top, Apollo 14 astronauts at Craters of the Moon. Signatures: Alan Shepard, Joe Engle, Gene Cernan, and Ed Mitchell. Left middle, skylight in Indian Tunnel. Left bottom, ranger station built in 1925. Above, parallel the chasm. Below left, red fox. Below right, star party and celebration.
No matter the season, there’s always something cool to see at Craters of the Moon.
“It’s quite unlike any other place in the lower 48 states,” Wade said. “One of the park’s values is that natural sounds prevail there. It’s not a landscape dominated by anthropogenic (human-caused) noise.”
In addition to offering a soundtrack that consists mostly of wind and wildlife, the night sky is another major value of spending time at Craters of the Moon. It was designated an International Dark Sky Park in 2017 and is one of the largest pools of natural nighttime darkness left in the country as well as one of the best places in the lower 48 states to see the Milky Way.
The Centennial celebration schedule includes monthly themes: May is Rich Cultural History, June is Tranquil Wilderness, July is Robust Research, August is Explosive Geology and September is Expansive Night Sky.
If you’ve never been or you haven’t been to Craters in a while, it’s the perfect time to “Take a trip to the Moon!”
Craters of the Moon National Monument & Preserve is open every day, weather permitting. For more information, go to NPS.gov/crmo.

WITH A BACKYARD LIKE OURS, IT’S EASY TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE
BY MIKE MCKENNA P HOTOS COURTESY OF TROUT UNLIMITED HEMINGWAY CHAPTER
Nestled in the heart of the Northern Rockies and surrounded by spectacular fisheries of all kinds, the Wood River Valley is a fly fisher’s dream come true.
Within a short ride (or even walk) from any of the four main towns in “the Valley,” you can reach parts of the “Rocky Mountain Fly Fishing Highway,” which runs right past some of our famous local fisheries.
The most well-known local fishery is the blue ribbon, spring-fed Silver Creek. Breathtaking branches of the Big Lost River and Salmon River aren’t too far away either.
And then, of course, there’s the freestone Big Wood River. Named for the m ighty cottonwood trees that shade its banks, the Big Wood begins beneath Galena Summit and then winds its way south past the Boulder and Smoky Mountains and the slopes of Sun Valley, Amer-
ica’s original ski resort. The river rests in Magic Reservoir, a renowned ice fishing spot in the winter, before carving its way through the potato farms and barley fields of central Idaho and finally completing its journey to the Snake River. The first 20 miles are the best for angling.
"The Big Wood is special. You can still find access and find places where you feel like you’re fishing all alone on a wild river."
–Sam Ernst
“The Big Wood is special,” Sam Ernst of Silver Creek Outfitters in Ketchum said. “You can still find access and find places where you feel like you’re fishing all alone on a wild river.”
Like much of the rest of Idaho, development has had a major impact over the
years. “The Wood,” as local anglers often call it, has lost some its historical floodplains to neighborhoods and lawns.
“The Big Wood is always in flux and changing,” Amanda Bauman said. “And it’s at a turning point.”
Amanda is a fishing guide with Silver Creek Outfitters and is also the Executive Director for Project Big Wood, a local nonprofit spearheading efforts to keep the river healthy. Both Amanda and Sam are active members of the Hemingway Chapter of Trout Unlimited (TU).
Hemingway TU focuses on education and volunteerism to make an impact. It offers great ways for local anglers to get involved as well as to learn about the conditions of local fisheries. TU publishes a regular e-newsletter, offers free annual Speakers Series, and organizes volunteer and group outings that are often combined with other nonprofits. It teams up with local nonprofits like the Wood River Land
Trust and Project Big Wood to try to keep our river as healthy as possible.
“TU is a great gateway to find out and get involved in what’s happening locally,” said Dick Linville, a Hemingway TU member who moved to Idaho from Texas.
“If you care about freshwater conservation, if you care about fishing and you care about the future of the river, you ought to be a member,” Hemingway TU’s President, Nick Miller, said.
The Big Wood is a truly special river and fishery. One of the big reasons it is so special is because of the people who care for it and call it their home water. That’s why most locals welcome others to come fish or even just stroll or sit along its banks. All we ask is that you treat it with the appreciation and respect our backyard deserves.
For more information or to be part of this great effort please visit hemingwaytu.org
Fishing is a big part of the appeal of our little neck of the Northern Rockies. Part of the “Fly Fishing Highway,” as they call Highway 20, even rolls right through the southern section of Blaine County. The two-lane highway is a short drive from Hailey or Ketchum and passes the legendary waters of Silver Creek.
When The Nature Conservancy first preserved Silver Creek back in 1976, it became a watershed moment in spring creek and fisheries conservation. It was really the first conservation project of its kind anywhere, and its success has inspired numerous such projects around the world. That’s one of the reasons why fishing the gin-clear waters of Silver Creek is such a special event in any angler’s life—even when you’re as lucky as we locals are to fish it all the time. There’s never a bad day on Silver Creek, because even though the fishing isn’t easy, it’s always a rewarding experience.
It’s tough not to like a place called Magic Reservoir. The largest manmade lake in the area has several access points and is popular for bait, lure and fly fishing during the warmer months and ice fishing in the winter. Fed by the Big Wood River, when Magic Reservoir is full it covers nearly 4,000 acres and five miles of high-desert terrain. Besides fishing, Magic is a popular spot for waterskiers and stand-up paddleboarding.
While trout—and big ones at that—are caught with regularity at both Silver Creek and Magic Reservoir, Magic is also one of the best places around to catch bass.
Silver Creek Hotel in Bellevue is the closest lodging. Other quality nearby options include the Fairfield Inn, AmericInn, Airport Inn. The Limelight Hotel in Ketchum is pet friendly and there is a variety of options at the Sun Valley Resort. Every hotel mentioned offers pools and/or hot tubs. There is also a variety of camping options by Silver Creek, including in Picabo and at the Hayspur Fish Hatchery and Point of Rocks recreation area.
The Big Wood River carves its way through the Valley it’s named for. That’s why no matter where you are in the Wood River Valley, you’re never far from the river.
The Big Wood offers ample access throughout most of its 60-mile run to Magic Reservoir. Early spring is the only time the river is completely closed to fishing. Meanwhile, the other three seasons on the Big Wood make for some pretty idyllic alpine fishing. The freestone river is full of trout and gorgeous views that make you feel a lot farther away from civilization than you are.
Making its way from the snowy mountains above Sun Valley, Trail Creek offers some pretty sweet small-stream fishing. The chilly waters of the creek get stocked often during the height of the fishing season. Trail Creek also passes by the Hemingway Memorial, adding another attraction to spending some time exploring the small mountain stream.
GEAR
Two of the three best in the fishing business, Silver Creek Outfitters and Lost River Outfitters, can be found on Main Street in Ketchum. Our third is located right in the town of Picabo on the edge of Silver Creek. They all offer full-service tackle shops and knowledgeable staffs. They also offer a variety of guided fishing experiences, from full to half days, for one person or for the whole family. One trip on the water and you’ll see why Sun Valley has long been known for offering some of the best fishing guides in the country.

If you love to hike, there are endless hiking options leading from every community in the Wood River Valley—from short, dogand family-friendly strolls like the Howard Preserve in Bellevue or the Sellgren Trail in Ketchum, to long jaunts into the mountains like Quigley Canyon in Hailey or Trail Creek just beyond Sun Valley.
Easy: Hailey Greenway runs along the Big Wood River and is a perfect place for youngsters to take a hike. One of the most popular places to walk dogs or hit the river for some fishing, the Greenway runs from the Wood River Land Trust’s Draper Wood River Preserve just off Bullion Street in Hailey, down through the Colorado Gulch Preserve off Broadford Road.
Variable: Adams Gulch may be the most popular hiking (and dog walking) spot in the Wood River Valley. Nestled in the tree-covered hills just north of Ketchum, Adams Gulch offers a variety of hiking options, with all kinds of loops for any energy level. If you don’t mind crossing paths with people and pets, this is the perfect hiking spot for you.
Variable: Carbonate is a locals' favorite. Hikers can opt for either the
butt-kicking steep ascent that climbs 1,300 feet in 0.9 miles or the casual meandering switchback trail that reaches the top in 2.4 miles. Either way, this local staple provides sweeping vistas from Hailey and views all the way to Bald Mountain in the north.
Harder: Bald Mountain Trail covers what is best known during the winter as the Sun Valley Ski Area. With stunning views of the surrounding mountains and access options that include a gondola ride, the Bald Mountain Trail is a must for any hiking fan. It isn’t an easy hike, however, as the trail covers 3,200 vertical feet in five miles. That’s why some folks ride the gondola up and then hike back down.
Smiley Creek Lodge welcomes you with a variety of cozy accommodations from brand new luxury tiny homes, to cabins, yurts, tent sites, and full-hookup RV sites.

Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve offers up some of the most unique terrain in the country, making it a popular spot for day hikes.
Located just over an hour’s drive southeast of the Wood River Valley, Craters of the Moon is an island of lava flows and cinder cones sprawled out in the midst of the “Sagebrush Sea,” as they call the high desert of southern Idaho. Formed during volcanic eruptions over 15,000 years ago, the monument was signed into order by President Calvin Coolidge in 1923. In 1969, Apollo 14 astronauts came to train for their moonwalk by hiking around Craters.
Craters of the Moon offers eight hikes from short strolls to an 8-mile trek. It also offers a unique snowshoeing option in the winter. The Monument is open year-round and its Visitor Center is open daily.
For more information about Craters of the Moon, go to the National Parks Service page at www.nps.gov/crmo or call (208) 527-1300.
The Sawtooth Valley is considered one of the most beautiful mountain valleys on the planet. “Just over the hill,” as most locals say, from the Wood River Valley, the Sawtooth Valley is another short drive that is full of hiking, fishing, mountain biking and water-related fun.
After crossing Galena Summit—and
stopping to take a photo at the Scenic Overlook—the Sawtooth Valley is sprinkled with a series of high mountain lakes. Redfish Lake is the most famous of the drive-to lakes and is named after the once prolific salmon that return some 900 miles from the sea to spawn each year.
The Sawtooth Fish Hatchery, located right along Scenic Highway 75, is a great place to see salmon and steelhead. Endless hiking options can be found along both sides of the highway, especially if you head into the Sawtooth Mountains.
The quaint and rustic town of Stanley is busiest in the summer, when it becomes a hub for bikers, hikers and rafters. The greater Stanley area is home to more than a dozen hotels, lodges and rental options as well as countless camping choices. Stanley is also home to more than a dozen restaurants and bars, although most of them are only open during the warm-weather months.
For more information about dining or lodging in Stanley, contact the Stanley Chamber of Commerce at StanleyCC.org or call (208) 774-3411.

Wered friend. The thrill of seeing a bird for the first time is akin to summiting a mountain. Initially, new discoveries come easily, but as you ascend, it requires more effort. Fear not, Idaho's high altitudes can aid you in achieving your birding goals.
Idaho's elevated terrain offers birders a paradise with vast open spaces, forests, wetlands, and preserves attracting diverse avian species. Many of these unique birds aren't featured in standard Idaho bird guides due to their preference for higher altitudes. Thankfully, local expert Poo Wright-Pulliam, an artist, volunteer guide, and avid bird enthusiast, shares her years of experience about this special area.
Silver Creek Preserve never disappoints. With over 150 identified species, it’s just a matter of looking up, over, or anywhere! Within the preserve, you’ll see Idaho’s beauties flying, perching, wading, and nesting.
Throughout the preserve, among the songbirds and raptors can be found Bald and Golden Eagles, “gray ghost” Northern Harriers, and Western Meadowlarks If you pay keen attention to the reeds, you may be rewarded with hearing, and possibly seeing, Sora , Virginia Rails, and American Bitterns. And in the twilight of dawn or dusk, a crepuscular Short-eared or Long-eared Owl may just be waiting to greet you on an obliging fence post. While glassing through the sagebrush, look for the Loggerhead Shrike in the summer, and the Northern Shrike in the winter. Also abundant in the winter months are Trumpeter Swans. During the warmer months, there are three varieties of hummingbirds that flit throughout the preserve. Yes, you read that correctly, THREE: Calliope, Black-chinned , and Rufous.
Croy Creek Wetlands/Draper
Wood River Preserve is an ideal home for an array of ducks, rails, and five different species of swallows: The Barn, Cliff, Northern Rough-winged, and Violet-green. The Draper Preserve Bow Bridge is a triumph of architecture and should not be missed. It leads directly onto a short boardwalk overseeing fresh wetlands sprinkled with waterfowl and soundtracked by music from Red-winged Blackbirds. During the winter, the Bohemian Waxwing flutters about, and during the summer,
the Cedar Waxwing arrives in its place. Take Poo’s word for it, searching through the willows for Gray Catbirds, Bullock’s Orioles, Black-headed Grosbeaks, and Yellow and Wilson Warblers is an afternoon well spent.
Centennial Marsh is perfect for those feeling a little more adventurous. Poo recommends the one-hour drive for a chance to spot a myriad of waterbirds. The Sandhill Crane, Black-necked Stilt , White-Faced Ibis, Wilson’s Phalarope, and Black Tern can all be found throughout the area. And, as a bonus, if you visit in late May to early June, you’ll be rewarded with the spectacular view of the widely anticipated camas lily bloom.
Throughout the Valley During the winter months, as you travel throughout the Valley, keep an eye out for Black and Grey-crowned Rosy-Finch (there’s a large flock near Triumph), Clark’s Nutcracker, Red and White-winged Crossbill, and Steller’s Jay. At Howard Preserve, the dense tree trails along the Big Wood River lend themselves to listening for songbirds and watching for river ducks. Keep a lookout for Great Blue Herons, Eagles, and Red-tailed Hawks. Heading up Trail Creek Road to the wetlands, there’s a good chance you will see ducks and possibly moose. Poo remembers with amazement when she once had a Green-winged Teal, Cinnamon Teal, and Blue-winged Teal all in the view of her binoculars. At the base of River Run, along the bike path, numerous songbirds can be heard. And don’t forget to look for Pileated Woodpeckers and waxwings in the cottonwoods, and American Dippers in the rapids! Two other great spots for birding just outside the Wood River Valley are Carey Lake Wildlife Management Area and Magic Reservoir.
Formerly part of the Red Crossbill family, the Cassia Crossbill is now recognized as Idaho's first endemic bird. Named after Cassia County, it has a specialized beak for feeding on Rocky Mountain lodgepole pine seeds.
Sun Valley may have been founded on skiing, but it’s becoming known as a mountain biking mecca. The entire area is full of good dirt, a great variety of terrain and over 400 miles of single track to explore. There are also plenty of fun and unique rides just a short drive away at places like Fisher Creek, but if you love to ride, there’s really no reason to leave the backyard.
Once the snow melts, Bald Mountain opens for the mountain biking business— and business couldn’t be better. Lift-access riding on Baldy is about as much fun as you can have on two wheels. From the new flow trails to miles of downhill track, riding Sun Valley is tough to top.
Adams Gulch
Adams Gulch just north of Ketchum and Carbonate Mountain just across the river from Hailey are two of the most popular places to ride, but there are great trails and plenty of old dirt roads into the mountains to explore throughout the Valley.
Fatbike Phenomenon
There used to come a time each fall when we’d all put our bikes away for the season and grab our skis. But now we just swap out our road or mountain bike for a fatbike. With tires twice as big as a normal mountain bike, fatbikes are good in snowy and slushy conditions. Fatbikes have actually been around for well over a decade, but they’ve really begun to take off in popularity over the last few years. With the Wood River Trail offering 20 miles of groomed paths perfect for fatbiking, going for a bike ride during the winter no longer sounds like a nutty idea.
Ketchum Bike Park (700 2nd Ave.): A great pump park, grassy rest areas, shade tree and shrub plantings, and bench and bleacher seating.
Trail Park & Track (Quigley Canyon): Made of dirt, clay rollers and berms, a pump track offers a great way for kids of all ages to get active, get a core workout and develop great off-road biking skills.
Forbidden Fruit is a one-way, mountain-bike-only flow trail. It is located in the lower end of Eve's Gulch, and accessed off the Eve Gulch Trail portion of the 146 Trail. The trail starts with 300 feet of climbing that puts you at the top of the 'flow' portion of the trail.
Forbidden Fruit features big berm-turns and large jumps with multiple roller sections that allow you to test your appetite for air. Areas of the trail may contain loose gravel or downed trees that have come onto the trail since its last round of maintenance. It is always a good idea to start with a slow lap; rolling down the trail to inspect its condition and to know what to expect on your next lap.

More off-road adventure than a pavement ride, gravel-grind riding is a unique mix of on and off-road riding, sometimes with some single track that allows you to cover miles and see incredible off-road Idaho areas. Underground races and organized events, such as Rebecca’s Private Idaho, have cemented the concept of gravel-grind riding to all who love bike adventures. Today, purpose-built gravel bikes are sturdy, but designed for off-pavement use, with good tires, a slightly more upright position, longer wheel base and disc brakes. Gravelgrinder bikes bring the best of both worlds – from smooth single track to epic road rides – into the same outing.
Pick up the full Travels on Gravel map with all 12 rides in Hailey & South Idaho at the Hailey Welcome Center or download at haileyidaho.com/gravel
Our Favorite Travels on Gravel 10 - Easy - Quigley Loop Trail/Rd. 4.2 miles. 642’ elevation gain. About 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
A perfect beginner or quick gravel ride, especially good for young children. Start at the trailhead on Quigley Road, just past the end of the pavement. Ride out on the single-track trail to the pond and loop back on the other side of Quigley Canyon until the trail crosses the field and returns to the trailhead on Quigley Road. Or ride the road out to the pond and return on the trail; it’s easier descending on the trail.
1B - Moderate - Classic Rock Creek to Poverty Flats Loop
35 miles. 1,500’ elevation gain. Expect 2-1/2 to 3/1/2 hours.
This ride is a classic tour of the west Hailey gravel. It is best ridden counter-clockwise and rides in reverse of some of the same roads in the Travels on Gravel map. Start in Hailey and head west on Croy Creek Road. At about 5 miles, turn left on View Road/ Rock Creek Road (at Rock Creek Ranch sign). At approximately 10 miles, there will
be a left turn onto Poverty Flats Road. This turn is easy to miss, but marked by a couple of galvanized storage tanks. Continue on Poverty Flats Road on rolling terrain followed by a 2.3-mile climb and fast descent to Glendale Road. Continue on Glendale Road, crossing Highway 75. Take a right turn just before Bellevue Farms subdivision and follow around to the south and then connect with Gannett Road. Head back to Hailey via the bike path starting in Bellevue or alternately on Broadford Road.
A “big” ride with lots of vertical. 16 miles. 1,500’ elevation gain. About 2-3 hours.
This out-and-back ride on a gravel road is only lightly traveled but rough in places. It follows Seamans Gulch in a narrow shady canyon until it starts the climb to Muldoon Summit. Start from Bellevue on Muldoon Road and pass turnoffs to Martin Canyon on the left, and to Sharps Canyon on the right (see separate rides for those) until you start climbing in an open basin. At the summit you can stop and enjoy views of the Pioneer mountains before descending.
Sun Valley is not only home to America’s first destination ski resort, we’re also home to the first ski lift. You can even see its remnants at Proctor Mountain, just east of the resort.
We’re awfully proud of our skiing history around here, and for good reason. From Sun Valley’s celebrity-filled start in 1936 to officially being named “Nordic Town USA” a few years ago, skiing is part of the foundation of our community.
One of the biggest reasons skiing is so big around here is that we offer something for everyone. Maybe you like Black Diamond bump runs or carving endless slalom turns on Baldy. Perhaps playing in the terrain parks or learning to ski or board on Dollar is more you’re style. Maybe you like to Nordic or cross-country ski on our more than 100 miles of regular groomed trails. Or maybe you love to earn your turns and hit the backcountry and carve tracks along Galena Summit. Even if a simple snowshoe followed by a cup of hot
cocoa is you’re style, we’ve got you covered there, too.
Baldy, also referred to as the Sun Valley Ski Resort, offers 100 runs and 3,400 vertical feet of alpine skiing. Baldy is well known for its consistent snow (averaging nearly 20 feet each ski season) and groomed runs, which are some of the best in the world thanks to the nation’s finest snowmaking system.
Dollar Mountain is located on the other side of Ketchum from Baldy. Offering 22 runs and nearly 1,000 feet of vertical, Dollar is home to a variety of terrain parks that get changed throughout the season. It also offers a Magic Carpet and plenty of runs for those new to skiing.
Rotarun is the “little mountain with the big heart” in Hailey. Skiing and riding is
available on weekends at the 475-foot-high ski hill. The ticket price to ride the J-bar is a simple donation to the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, which runs Rotarun and offers learn-to-ski programs there for elementary school kids.
Most people don’t realize that Sun Valley Heli-Ski was issued the first U.S. Forest Service heli-ski permit in 1966 and is still lucky enough to lay claim to the largest permit in the lower 48 states. Their skiable terrain includes three ranges (Smoky, Boulder and Pioneer mountains) and covers more than 750,000 acres.
Soldier Mountain is located in the Sawtooth National Forest just north of Fairfield. The mountain is great for families, offers 36 runs and cat skiing that gives adventurers access to Smoky Dome, the highest peak in the Soldier Mountains.
Sun Valley is a gateway to endless, powderfilled backcountry terrain with awe-inspiring views. Accessible by helicopters, hut systems, snowmobiles, and by human powered means, enthusiasts will revel in the area’s expansive mountain ranges. BY MIKE MCKENNA P HOTOS COURTESY OF SYRINGA MOUNTAIN SCHOOL
Shawn Myers wasn’t exactly sure what to expect when she started teaching at Syringa Mountain School in Hailey. She had never taught at a Waldorf-inspired school during her decade-long teaching career.
Shawn’s two sons had gone through the traditional Blaine County school system, just like she had. So stepping into the exceptionally large classroom at the south valley charter school was a new experience. But it didn’t take long for Shawn to realize she’d made a good decision.
“It’s definitely not a traditional school, but once you get into it, it all makes sense,” Shawn said. “I can’t imagine not teaching this way now.”
Syringa Mountain School opened in 2014 as a local public school choice. Offering classes in kindergarten through 8th grade, the school is free for Blaine County residents. Most Syringa students will actually complete their education by graduating from Blaine County School District’s Wood River High.
What separates Syringa Mountain School’s program from a more traditional model is that it focuses on a liberal arts and artsintegrated, experiential-learning style that is guided by the core principles of the Waldorf educational philosophy. The goal is to create a supportive community of peers, parents and teachers so that each child is a confident, self-directed and engaged learner who is invested in his/her own education.
Based on the theories of Austrian scientist Rudolph Steiner, there are more than 160 Waldorf-inspired schools scattered throughout the country and no two are exactly alike. One of the things that makes Syringa unique is its access to the natural splendors of the Wood River Valley. The rivers, mountains and trails that abound here are ideal platforms for movement-based, outdoor-focused education.
“In every lesson we are inclusive of the head, the heart and the hands,” Shawn said. “The more they care about something, the more they’ll care for it.”
The motto for Syringa is “Cultivating curious and passionate learners prepared to build a life with purpose.”
They accomplish this goal by accepting that every student is unique and has different skills, needs and challenges. The strength of the school is that it can adapt to fit each student.
“We meet the kids where they’re at and support students in the ways they need. Each kid is different and they’re not just a number in our classrooms,” said Christi Thompson, Syringa’s Charter Administrator and Special Education Director.
Michelle Harris is the President of the Parent Council. When she first visited the school as an option for her young son she was “floored by the kindergarten room. It didn’t look anything like a typical classroom.” The large, spacious classroom allows plenty of room to move and is the typical setup for each grade. It’s one of the reasons why Michelle highly recommends Syringa.
“More than anything, as a parent, I’m most pleased with how much my child is learning and that he is learning to love to learn,”
Michelle said, adding, “He’s positively supported in areas where he struggles and challenged in areas where he thrives. He loves coming to school every day.”

Community means something around here and our education system is committed to building foundations that create exceptional humans. When the world seems to be moving away from unique forms of education, our school district is embracing all the different ways students learn. Our teachers, in both public and private schools, are combining real-world experiences with academics to build confident and passionate humans who will have a lifelong passion for learning.

If you know anyone who has danced in the Wood River Valley over the last four decades—from ballet to hip hop, modern to jazz or tap—he or she likely has Footlight Dance Centre to thank.
Hilarie Neely is the heroine behind Footlight Dance. Ever since fate first brought her to Sun Valley in 1980, Hilarie has been a tireless and impassioned force for the dance community in the Wood River Valley.
“We provide the spark and help people pursue their passions,” Hilarie said. “We also help provide educational enrichment through dance and support opportunities for everyone to see and enjoy dance as an artistic expression.”
Hilarie first came to Sun Valley as a member of the Portland Dance Theater. She had recently graduated from Southern Methodist University with a degree in dance and had no idea that a tour stop in Idaho would change her life.
rie said. “I try to run our program like what you’d find in a big city. We work with everyone from four-year-olds to aspiring professionals. So kids can move on from here if they want and have a solid foundation to do anything.”
Hilarie has taught thousands of local kids over the decades, but one of her favorite things to do is to share her art with local schools each year.
For 35 years, Hilarie has led School Enrichment Dance Performances, free for all Blaine County students. Last year, the touring troupe from Footlight performed “Water Is Life,” using different styles of dance to express the lifecycle of water.
“We provide the spark and help people pursue their passions."
–Hilarie Neely
After spending a week participating in a residency program at the Sun Valley Center for the Arts, Hilarie was asked to accompany a fellow dancer on a blind double date. She met a local guy, Steve Job. “We fell in love and the rest,” as she says, “is history.”
Hilarie moved to the Gem State shortly thereafter and immediately immersed herself in the region’s dance community. She helped found an ensemble that toured Idaho and Wyoming, became involved with the Idaho Commission on the Arts, and in 1984 she founded Footlight Dance Centre.
“I am extremely passionate about dance and I work 24-7,” Hila-
“We show how the arts can bring new ways to think about and see things,” Hilarie explained. “It’s a great way for us to give back to the community and make sure local kids can experience dance at least once a year.”
Boys actually tend to have the strongest reactions to these annual performances and impressive dancers. “They will come up to me afterwards or see me around town,” Hilarie said. “And they’ll say, ‘You’re the dance lady. That was awesome!’”
The dance scene has been pretty awesome locally ever since Hillarie landed here. But as much as she has done for our community, she feels like the lucky one.
“I feel really blessed that I could pursue my passion in such a beautiful place and be able to positively impact so many people over the years,” she said.

Each year, the Sun Valley Gallery Association (SVGA) hosts a series of gallery walks where SVGA member galleries open their doors to the public and share the works in their latest exhibitions. These events, which take place on seven Friday evenings throughout the year, are eagerly anticipated by the community and are free to the public. Locals and visitors alike can take in thought-provoking exhibitions of newly installed art, enjoy a glass of wine, mingle with friends, and often meet the artists. 2024 gallery walks will take place 5–7:30 p.m. on July 5, August 2, August 31, and December 27.

THERE'S NO BETTER PLACE TO CELEBRATE LOVE THAN IDAHO AND WE ARE LUCKY TO OFFER A FEW TIPS FOR THE WEDDING OR ELOPEMENT OF YOUR DREAMS
BY BRENNA ELLIS PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE MARIE PHOTO
In the heart of Idaho’s Smokey Mountains, Catlyn and Devon celebrated their love for one another and a place deeply special to them. They chose Stanley for their wedding because of the love they had both fostered for the area over their many years together. With a friend's house as the setting, their wedding oozed of their adventurous and eccentric spirits and the wild, untamed setting that served as the backdrop.
The couple harnessed the magic of the Idaho mountains in every aspect, giving the local vendors freedom to make it as representative of the area as possible. Their caterer, a knowledgeable Idaho chef, harvested every aspect of their meal from the lands of central Idaho. They created their own floral arrangements with flowers from a local farmer, showing the true colors and native plants of the area. For Catlyn and Devon, their wedding was not just an event but a sensory journey, designed to immerse their guests in the magic of Idaho and create lasting memories of a truly unforgettable celebration of love and location.
If you are thinking of planning a wedding as unique and special as Catlyn and Devon's, we’ve put together a list of details that will take your wedding from standard to a full Idaho experience. From venues to vendors and unique local touches, here are our tips on making your special day an unforgettable, authentic Idaho wedding.
Bask in Warm Hospitality: One of the things that sets Sun Valley and the surrounding area apart is its warm and welcoming community. You'll be greeted with genuine hospitality and friendly smiles from the moment you arrive. Whether you're looking for recommendations on local vendors or seeking advice on the best hiking trails, you'll find that the people of Sun Valley are always eager to help make your wedding day truly special.
Embrace the Outdoors: From rustic mountain lodges to elegant ranches and intimate bed and breakfasts, there are a large variety of venues to suit every couple's taste and style. Be sure to take advantage of the stunning natural scenery by incorporating outdoor elements into your wedding day. Consider exchanging vows in a scenic mountain meadow, hosting a reception under the stars.
Incorporate Local Flavors: Highlight Idaho's culinary delights by incorporating locally sourced ingredients into your wedding menu. Work with your caterer to embrace the local cuisine to give your guests a truly authentic Idaho experience. Regional specialties like Idaho potatoes, huckleberries, trout, and elk all make for unique dining experiences.
Support Local Vendors: When planning your wedding, consider working with local vendors whenever possible. From florists and photographers to musicians and rental companies, choosing
local businesses not only supports the local economy but also ensures that you'll receive personalized service and expert knowledge of the area. There is a lot of creative talent in this area and the locals will be able to give your wedding that extra Idaho touch that makes it so great. You might be surprised by what recommendations local vendors have that can make your day extra special.
Add Rustic Touches: Enhance the natural beauty of your Idaho wedding with rustic decor inspired by the local wilderness and history. Incorporate elements like wooden signage, antler accents, and wildflower centerpieces to create a warm and inviting atmosphere that reflects the region's rugged charm and personality.
Include Outdoor Adventures: There are endless opportunities for adventure and exploration at every turn. Whether you and your guests are avid skiers, hikers, mountain bikers, or fly fishermen, you'll find plenty of ways to enjoy the great outdoors before and after your big day. Setting up optional group adventures will allow your guests to experience this endless playground.
Embrace the Season: No matter the season, central Idaho is stunning. Embracing the mood of the season, like cozy blankets and hot cocoa for winter weddings or fresh flowers and outdoor games for summer ceremonies, will create a wedding day that truly captures the spirit of Idaho and the beauty of the season.
There is no better place to get married than the breathtaking area surrounding the Wood River Valley. From small towns to epic landscapes, this area provides a dreamy backdrop for any size wedding. By truly embracing the local flavor, your wedding will delight guests and make for a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

They don’t call this place Sun Valley for nothing. Our little slice of “IdaHome” averages over 300 days of sunshine a year.
We do our best to make the most out of all this sunshine by playing and partying hard, which is why we have many sweet patios and decks to enjoy our après adventures. Here’s a rundown of some of our favorites.
The terrace at The Grill at Knob Hill Inn is a gardener’s delight, ideal for some higher-level dining. Meanwhile, the patio at Grumpy’s offers views of Baldy, delightfully greasy burgers and their legendary schooners of beer.
Sawtooth Brewery and Lefty’s both offer small decks and big beers. Bigwood Bread's patio is the perfect place for lunch and some of their hand-made artisan breads and treats.
The rooftop decks at the Sawtooth Club and Sun Valley Wine Company offer elevated and exceptionally tasty experiences. Despo's serves outstanding Mexican food at their newly remodeled deck in the heart of town, while the spacious back patio of the Limelight Hotel is tough to top for views, tasty treats and live music during the high seasons.
The most famous deck in Ketchum can be found atop the Warfield Distillery & Brewery. The tasty beers and spirits made on the lower level match the views from the rooftop deck.
Outdoor dining and world-class fare can be found everywhere you go around Sun Valley. The Lodge offers patios at both Gretchen’s and the Duchin Lounge. The Inn has patio seating at the Ram. The Sun Valley Club’s multi-tiered deck offers impressive views of the Trail Creek Golf Course with Baldy and Dollar mountains in the backdrop.
Hailey is a very bike-friendly community and Main Street is lined with places to park your bike and enjoy some outdoor dining. Look no further than the popular patio at the Power House Pub & Bike Shop. The bicycle bar has an impressive Europeanheavy beer selection and a small but tasty menu.
If you want action right in the heart of town, the La Cabañita at the Mint has a great outdoor seating where you'll feel like you're in the center of of Hailey's local life.
The patio at Wiseguy Pizza Pie is the perfect place to grab a cold one and a slice. Sun Valley Brewery serves up handcrafted ales, big meals and a nice view of Della Mountain as well as regular live music.
Sawtooth Brewery has a small deck, but often opens up the brewhouse doors so live bands have a place to play, leaving plenty of room for dancing. The Wicked Spud is the place to be most
Wednesdays when they host live music in support of local nonprofit organizations.
DaVinci’s on Bullion Street and Dang’s Thai Cuisine & Sushi Bar on Main each have a small deck, but serve up big flavors, perfect for fans of authentic Italian or Asian meals, respectively.
CK’s Real Food has long served not only some of the best food in Idaho, but its patio is one of the prettiest.
The back deck at Mahoney’s is the place to be in Bellevue for burgers, brews and views of the river. They also have live music on Thursday nights during the summer. The small decks at Mama Inéz and The Cutthroat Club are also great locations to soak up some rays on sunny days.

WHETHER YOU LIKE FIVE-STARS OR SIMPLE AND RUSTIC, THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY HAS SOME IDEAL LODGING OPTIONS.
BY BRENNA ELLIS PHOTOS COURTESY OF BEST WESTERN TYROLEAN
When it comes to family-friendly accommodations in Ketchum, look no further than the Best Western Tyrolean Lodge. Since its construction in 1953, this Austrian-styled hotel has been a cornerstone of the Ketchum community. The Tyrolean's distinctive architecture, breathtaking views of Baldy, and serene surroundings have charmed visitors for decades.
Tucked away in the aspen trees on the south side of Ketchum, the lodge offers a sense of seclusion while still within walking distance of the town's amenities. Not only are guests just a five-minute stroll from Ketchum's restaurants and shops, but they can also easily access the Gondola at Sun Valley’s River Run Lodge, located just a short distance from the lodge's front door. While not a true ski-in-ski-out, it’s not far off! If you aren’t up for the short walk in your ski boots with all your gear, the city bus stop is just out past the parking lot and you can hitch a free, easy ride to the mountain. After a long day on the slopes, the bus ride back up the short hill is hard to pass up.
Having been built in 1953, the Tyrolean has gone through many renovations and expansions over the years while still maintaining its traditional and rustic charm. Throughout the decades, the lodge has remained steadfast in its commitment to providing guests of all ages with a comfortable and relaxing environment. The dedicated staff and amazing amenities underscore the lodge's commitment to hospitality. Glowing reviews consistently talk about the exceptional service and inviting ambiance the Tyrolean offers.
In an era where many hotels prioritize adult clientele, the Tyrolean Lodge stands out for its dedication to families. “We want families to feel comfortable and focus on kids having fun. We have a game room as well as board games in the lobby for families to
play together” says Mary Pullin, General Manager of the Tyrolean Lodge. In addition to these amenities, the lodge has an outdoor pool and hot tub, a very generous continental breakfast, as well as complimentary coffee and hot cocoa machines in the lobby, and freshly baked cookies.
Now General Manager, Mary Pullin arrived in Ketchum in 2007 and shortly after began working at the Tyrolean Lodge. Starting as a front desk agent, it didn’t take long for her to fall in love with the lodge and make this her career, first as assistant GM and now GM. “I love the little lodge. It just became part of my life. I’ve loved getting to know all of the wonderful people.” If you are looking for your next accommodation in Ketchum, come stay at the Tyrolean Lodge, you just might fall in love with it as well!

AN OVERVIEW OF OUR RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE MARKET
BY MATT GELSO
The City of Hailey continued to experience a dynamic and robust commercial real estate market through 2023. While sales and dollar volumes were not as high as previous years, quality properties, priced appropriately, traded ownership with relative ease. Continued interest rate volatility with sustained ‘high’ rates have been a weight on commercial real estate nationwide, but our local market has not been significantly impacted, nor have we experienced the refinance issues and default rates on commercial debt that has been seen in major markets. Whether it be The Mint reopening its doors for business as ‘La Caba ñ ita @ The Mint’, large new multifamily development to put a dent in our valley’s housing issue, or a semi-local investor buying a large commercial property filled with leases to local businesses, Hailey continues to see new real estate investment and growth.
Light Industrial: There have not been any major light industrial development projects undertaken within the past year in Hailey. Supply is limited ‘for lease’ and ‘for sale’, with vacancy rates near zero percent, but building expenses have kept speculative builders on the sidelines for now. When there are smaller, user-friendly light industrial units available for sale, they trade quickly. There is hope that this will change in the next couple of years however, with renewed interest from local industrial developers. Of course, with limited supply, prices have only been increasing further in both for-sale and for-lease product. There have been a couple large investment-grade industrial sales, but this has not impacted the supply of light industrial space for local use.
Multifamily Housing: Hailey has been on a tear with new multifamily development. Since spring of 2022, there have been a total of 285 units approved within city limits. Of those, 103 are planned to be deed restricted. There are a total of 323 parking spaces included with the developments – the Downtown Residential Overlay (DRO) in Hailey requires one parking space per unit. The projects approved are located throughout Hailey, but generally focused on River Street and northern Woodside, and are a mix of ‘for sale’ and ‘for lease’ product. While not all of the projects have begun construction, many are well on their way to completion with some breaking ground this spring. The above numbers do NOT include the 32 rooms within the Silvercreek Living facility that was
“Not all real estate agents are created equal! If you are selling or buying a home there are two outstanding, efficient, organized, and supportive agents I highly recommend: Anna Mathieu and Michelle Sabina. They offer amazing service and line up great professional stagers, inspectors and contractors. They provide a personalized buyer and seller guide with all the reference information you could want. And they are expert negotiators. From your initial visit with Anna and Michelle, you won’t be disappointed!” –

"Susan Radford is stars in every category. Her dedication, knowledge and commitment in helping us find a home in the Wood River Valley was unstoppable. We would recommend her to anyone because she is committed, motivated, understanding, and fair in every aspect of the home journey.”
purchased by investors in late 2023 and leased to Blaine County Housing Authority (BCHA).
Eccles Flying Hat Ranch East: After a somewhat contentious process, the Area of City Impact (ACI) line dividing the ranch was agreed to by Hailey, Bellevue, and Blaine County. The final apportionment gives Hailey approximately 40% of the total land and Bellevue the remaining 60%. When the development comes together, we can expect a well-thoughtout community with the full range of property types – multi- and single-family housing, workforce housing, light industrial/shop/warehouse, and a limited number of neighborhood office/retail properties. A recent proposition is the potential use of a new Urban Renewal Area (URA) within Hailey’s portion of the development, which will provide for a more rapid process of constructing infrastructure, thereby raising new tax revenue more quickly.
Hailey Comprehensive Plan Update: Estimated to be completed within one year and at a cost of $180,000 to the city, the Hailey Community Development Department staff, in conjunction with consulting firm Jacob Civil, has undertaken a rewrite of the city’s comprehensive plan. Last completed in 2010, with an estimated 10-year lifespan, the rewrite intends to create a “consensus around an overarching vision for Hailey’s diverse community.” The document is aspirational in nature and acts as a guide for land use and development planning for the next decade.
2023 LOT Collections & .5% For Housing: Indicative of the continued economic activity in Hailey, the City of Hailey LOT (Local Option Tax) collections for 2023 added up to a new record of $976,554. This is the third year in a row that Hailey has set a new LOT collections record. Also new in 2023, Hailey voters elected to reapportion half of the funds raised by the city's separate ‘1% for Air’ LOT, to develop community housing for families living and working in Hailey. The now ‘1% For Air & Housing’ LOT is levied on rental cars and hotel/short term rentals to support reliable and continued air service, AND to support the development of sustainable and accessible community housing.
While there is a presidential election, and many known and unknown changes yet to come, we are looking forward to Hailey continuing its winning streak in 2024. As a great place to live with access to a wonderful community, we are cautiously optimistic that Hailey can weather whatever is thrown at it.
Thanks to Matt Gelso, CCIM of Paul Kenny & Matt Bogue Real Estate for this piece. Paul Kenny, Matt Bogue, and Matt Gelso make up the Kenny-Bogue Team and possess a combined 51 years of experience with commercial real estate sales, leasing, and investments in the Wood River Valley.
What's your Sun Valley story?
My college roommate grew up in Sun Valley and brought me here to ski back in…well, a long time ago. The epic long runs, sunshine, and incredible views from Baldy, along with the après-ski at Grumpy’s, and après-Grumpy’s parties, have been cherished memories ever since. Many years later, my brother moved to Hailey and bought a river rafting business. My husband and I were living in Paris, France, and came to visit. When we decided to move to the U.S. for a year, we thought we’d go to the big city and get jobs in our professions. But, we decided we had to stop in Sun Valley for the summer. That summer started in 2002...it’s been a long and wonderful summer!
What are your favorite things about living here?
I love the hiking and camping, the long summer days, the mountains, and the nearby rivers and lakes. I love all the fun and unique events throughout the year; from free jazz and rock concerts, enjoying the Summer Symphony on the lawn, to the great fund-raising events that bring the community together.
How did you get into real estate?
After our wonderful summer here, we decided we couldn’t leave right away, and so we had to reinvent ourselves professionally. I have a business background with an MBA from Thunderbird School of Global Management. I knew I loved working with people and working in real estate was a wonderful way to help people. I love educating people on the options, investigating nuances, finding creative solutions, and working to make people’s dreams of home ownership come true.
How does the next year or so look for our local markets?
The holidays were a bit slow but this year things are picking up; sold volume the first quarter of this year was up 33% over first quarter of 2023 – there have been fewer sales but median sales price has increased, and time on market is decreasing a bit. There is pent-up demand as buyers have started assimilating the higher interest rate reality and due to a shortage of choices. That said, I am anticipating that spring will bring more inventory, and that we’ll continue to see an increase in activity.
Is the Wood River Valley still a good real estate investment?
Always! Despite the rise in prices, we are still very reasonable compared to many resort areas. We have such natural beauty, so many recreational opportunities, a diversity of educational options, and an awesome community. Over time, real estate will appreciate and is an excellent hedge against inflation. Owning your own piece of the Valley continues to be an outstanding investment.
Any tips or advice on buying a home locally?
Each person’s objectives are unique. Consulting with a professional Realtor to explore the best way to achieve them is paramount! From networking with an office of active full-time agents with lots of connections, to knowing the community housing programs, I love finding properties and solutions that work best for each client. There are a variety of approaches I can guide people through and a network of exemplary finance, title, and inspection professionals that I can bring in to support the process.
