WELCOME TO THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY L ETTER FRO M O U R BO A R D P R E S IDE N T
I love this community and it’s why I’m proud to be a part of The Chamber. I am truly a local. I was born in Hailey and raised in Blaine County. My father was born in the J.C. Fox Building in downtown Hailey, where the City now has its offices, and he and my mom raised our family in Carey. I’m now raising a family of my own in Hailey and I couldn’t think of a better place to grow up, play sports, and enjoy all the great outdoors has to offer. The last two years were a challenge, to say the least. It finally feels like we are getting back to some sense of normalcy. Masks are coming off, activities and events are becoming abundant, and travel to our area is up considerably over last year. We have seen a lot of change over the last couple of years. The number of new permanent residents making the Wood River Valley home has had a huge impact on housing affordability and availability. This has made it very hard for local workers to stay in the Valley. We have all felt the impact. Businesses are all understaffed or closed more often. Hopefully everyone, local or visitor, will be patient and understanding of the situation and appreciate those who are working and providing the services we have all come to depend on. We have seen a lot of new businesses pop up and some of our favorites go. Some due to the hardships of COVID and others because of retirement.
PECK FAMILY
Others are for sale and who knows what will become of them. We appreciate all of the fun and memories and wish all of them the best of luck in their future endeavors. Our lives were definitely disrupted because of COVID, but we’re still lucky to live in a place where we can continue to enjoy recreational activities like hiking, hunting, fishing, mountain biking, skiing, snowmobiling—it’s endless. These same activities are what drive so many people to visit this beautiful place every year. Change is inevitable, especially when you have a place as great as our Valley that so many want to be a part of. As much as we want to keep it all to ourselves, it is just too great not to share. We can’t stop the change; however, our mission at The Chamber is to help direct it to keep this place what it is and even improve on it, if that's possible. We love to help the locals and the visitors alike. Whether they’re coming from Boise, Chicago or abroad, we want them to want to come back and to tell their friends and family what a great time they had here. The great outdoors, art, culture, shopping, world-class restaurants, spas and theatre, and lots of great libations, we’re living the good life here. Thanks for helping us keep it that way.

4 IT GETS YOU & YOUR STAFF NETWORKING One of the most rewarding things The Chamber does is to connect people. We help create relationships amongst fellow business and community members, especially at our two monthly events, Wake Up with The Chamber (on the second Tuesday morning) and our “BAHs” or Business After Hours (on the third Thursday evening). They are always free, open to the public and a fun way to make new connections, hear local news and catch up with familiar faces.

You support lots of Chamberbacked events that make life here better, from the 5B Father’s Day Bash to bringing back the Hailey Days of the Old West Rodeo, from the Fourth of July fireworks to Trailing of the Sheep. We also help thousands of visitors at the Welcome Center in Hailey and answer phone calls about everything from snow and flooding issues to the best places to camp, ski, hike, shop, eat, drink and be merry. Most people don’t realize that The Chamber is a nonprofit with the simple goal of helping our businesses and community. We appreciate your support and having you be part of the solution.
Happy Anniversary! The Wood River Valley is rich with history and each year we are reminded of some of the greatest contributions to our Valley.
The world—and the Wood River Valley—is a different place than it was 50 years ago. While disco and bellbottoms may be long gone, many things that began in the early 1970s still play big roles in what makes our community so special. From people like Juli Webb to nonprofits like Mountain Humane and the Sun Valley Museum of Art to the Sawtooth National Recreation Area, we offer a toast to locals celebrating their Golden Anniversary.

Juli Webb Carving Out a New Ski World for Women Local Juli Webb celebrates over 50 years on the slopes. BY MIKE MCKENNA
When Juli Webb began teaching folks to ski in Sun Valley in 1965 she was one of only five female instructors. Juli has gone on to be a ski instructor for 57 years and she’s loved every minute. “It was the perfect fit for me,” Juli said. “There just weren’t many outdoor jobs for girls back then. I was very fortunate, very lucky." Juli has been a trailblazer in the ski industry, carving out new tracks for female ski instructors. She was the youngest woman working for famed Austrian Sigi Engl’s ski school. At the time, only men were allowed to teach on Baldy or ski in the annual Torchlight Parade down Dollar Mountain on Christmas Eve. Juli didn’t care for that part of the holiday tradition, so she tucked her pigtails into a hat, then snuck onto the lift and became the first woman to light up the winter night as part of the parade. As she said, “That was the beginning of a whole new woman’s ski world.” Within a couple seasons, Juli made her ski film debut in the SCOTT USA movie, “A Turn is Born.” She was still skiing in promotional videos in 2018. Juli also became one of the first official “Ambassadors” for Sun Valley during the 1969-70 season. The program, now called Guest Services, has been going ever since. And in 2010, Juli was asked to lead the same Torchlight Parade she once had to sneak on to.
16
DISCOVER HAILEY & THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2022
During her career, Juli has helped thousands of folks of all ages learn to ski. She has carved turns with some of the best to ever hit the snow, like Jean Claude Killy, and is even credited with inventing the “Green Carpet” in 1972. Nearly 20 years before companies started manufacturing “Magic Carpets” to assist people beginning the sport, Juli came up with the idea and her design is still in use at Dollar Mountain today. She has literally helped countless people of all ages fall in love with skiing. “It’s great to see people do something they didn’t think they could and overcome their fear,” said Juli, who has taught four generations of at least three families how to ski. Juli was born in British Columbia and grew up in Seattle, but Sun Valley is her home. It’s always been “heaven” to her. Juli and her husband, Doug, raised two daughters here and founded one of the area’s most successful businesses, Webb Landscaping. Naturally, Juli’s children and grandchildren are avid skiers. “This place is magic,” Juli said, citing a common refrain she hears from guests on the slopes. “Everywhere you look there’s a view. It’s just the perfect scenario. There’s so much to offer here. Life is simple and convenient. It’s easy to see why everyone is so happy and why they say you never come to Sun Valley just once.” JULI HAS BEEN INSPIRING SUN VALLEY SKIERS FOR DECADES.

LANDING IN A NATURAL PLAYGROUND
Finding Home after 150,000 miles, 76 countries & 4 continents PHOTOS AND WORDS BY TIM BURKE
Every day, this state finds a way of reminding us that the land that we live on – the place we call home – is still wild. Go for a drive in any direction and you can see it, smell it, and feel it: It’s still untamed and the people that live here make no effort in hiding the fact that they are trying to keep it that way. It’s also no surprise that the largest roadless landmass in the lower 48 is centered smack-dab in the middle of Idaho. It symbolizes the quintessence of everything Idahoans love about the outdoors. This wilderness is the ultimate pinnacle and representation of Idaho’s preservation efforts and spans almost 2.5 million acres. Not yet ruined by man, the Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness is the largest federally-protected wilderness area in the lower 48. When combined with its next-door neighbor, the Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness, the two form an area larger than
the state of Connecticut. It defines rugged. What makes this preserved land so special is that, per the law, all means of “mechanized travel” on and within any dedicatedWilderness is prohibited. Only horseback, unpowered boats, and your own two feet are allowed here. For those of us who don’t always travel on horseback, own a raft, or have the stamina to hike through this unforgiving terrain, don’t worry. There are still hidden gems that allow you to get out and appreciate the raw natural beauty from your vehicle or motorcycle. For me – a motorcycle is, without a sliver of doubt, my favorite way to explore our planet. Allow me to rewind a bit: In April of 2017, not wanting to die with a lame and empty passport, I decide to quit my job, sell my THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2022
25
things, pack my motorcycle, and spent 3.5 years traveling the globe on two wheels. It goes without saying that it was life-changing: The travels took me 150,000 miles through 76 countries spanning four continents. I’ve had my motorcycle from the southernmost city in the world, Ushuaia, Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, to the shores of the Arctic Ocean in Prudhoe Bay, Alaska; and from Cape Town, South Africa to the top of Europe on the Arctic Ocean in Nordkapp, Norway. My motorcycle has rumbled across ancient cobblestone roads built by Julius Caesar's Roman Empire and has blasted through 130 degree Saharan heat in Africa. I’ve almost been trampled in an elephant stampede in Zambia and run off the road on a 15,000-foot mountain pass in Peru. Now, thanks in part to a global pandemic and a job offer in the aviation career-field that I left behind in 2017, I somehow find myself living in and calling the Wood River Valley home!
What makes this place so special is the ease for us to “disappear” into the backcountry.
…And even after all that, I still remind myself every day just how lucky I am to have landed here. What makes this location, and so many places just like it in Idaho, so special is the ease for us to “disappear” into the backcountry. Every resident in our Valley can be in National Forest or BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land within minutes. Just look 26
around: From wherever you’re reading this, if you’re here in Blaine County, I’ll bet something on the horizon is federal land; a natural playground for us to enjoy.
DISCOVER HAILEY & THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2022
For me, a good day is one spent on my motorcycle with a fine combination of scenic, twisty, and windy asphalt combined with dirt, gravel, mud, and rocks. Exploring far beyond where the pavement ends is what I live for and it’s what makes living in this Valley so good for the adventuringsoul. It’s incredible how fast civilization seems to fall behind when heading east or west off of Highway 75.
One of my favorite summertime loops starts right in downtown Hailey at the Sawtooth Brewery tap room. Depending on your speed, it may take 4 or 5 hours to complete. It has a way to make you feel like you’re getting a taste of Idaho’s rugged backcountry while staying in relative proximity to home. The route will weave through the rolling high-desert hills north of the Camas Prairie, open-range cattle grazing grounds, through chiseled slot canyons, along cold twisty creek beds, and past steaming hot springs. You’ll pass historic remnants of Idaho’s gold mining past before climbing high into the Smoky Mountains range and over Dollarhide Summit. And, what’s better? Assuming dry summer conditions, it can be done in any SUV or a pickup truck!
The journey starts when you head west, out Croy Creek Canyon, towards Fairfield. After about 4.5 miles, the asphalt gives way to hardpacked dirt and the terrain opens up from a steep mountain valley floor to open grassy hills. It’s not uncommon to see deer, elk, coyote, or fox; or if you’re really lucky, perhaps a cougar or bobcat. As you follow the winding Camp Creek Road route, right before popping out onto the Camas Prairie, you’ll weave through a tight, ragged rock canyon. Be sure to keep your eye out for buffalo at Wind River Outfitters! Once on the Camas Prairie, you’ll want to roll the windows down and crank the tunes as you fly down the wide-open County Road 200 N. toward the unincorporated community of Solider. From here, follow the signs north to Soldier Mountain ski area before turning onto National Forest Road 94. Now is the time to kiss cell phone reception goodbye, for the next few hours, because this is where the backcountry really begins. You’ll crest Couch Summit before descending into the pristine Big Smoky Creek basin. If you were really motivated, and planned appropriately, you could just about spend the next week and a half on dirt roads all the way to the Canadian border. Trust me – it can be done! For those needing to get back to civilization within a reasonable amount of time, you’ll want to turn east onto Forest Road 227
toward Ketchum. Keep this a secret, but two miles past that turn, on your left, you’ll find the steaming-hot Warswick Hot Springs. (Visit valleychamber.org/hot-springs for the ultimate guide to hot springs in the WRV) Take a dunk before continuing your climb towards Dollarhide Summit. At 9,301 feet above sea level, Dollarhide is one of Idaho’s highest and most stunningly beautiful backcountry passes. No matter which direction you travel over this pass, plan on taking a hundred or so photos in every direction! It’s all downhill from here! The next 25 miles weave through breathtaking scenery and past the (too) popular Frenchman Hot Springs before finally dumping you right into downtown Ketchum. At this point, most people would agree that a cold beer and a burger is unnegotiable and obligatory! Welcome to the Wood River Valley – This is just a tiny fraction of what this special place has to offer. Get out and enjoy it! HOW TO RECREATE RESPONSIBLY IN THE BACKCOUNTRY BY ANN HARRISON
More people than ever are getting out to spend time outdoors. While it’s wonderful to see so many people discovering the joys of nature, this influx inevitably leads to a few growing pains. Here are a few tips on how to recreate like a pro. KNOW BEFORE YOU GO
Check the status of where you are headed for weather and permitting restrictions. For the Wood River Valley that means checking the Sawtooth National Recreation Area website. A quick Google search will get you right to their website or visit fs.usda.gov. The mountains may be calling but they can be a beast. Make sure you have a backup plan and know your limits.
PLAN AND PREPARE
Playing in the mountains requires a little extra planning. Tell someone (other than your hiking buddy) where you're headed. Pack plenty of food and water, a first-aid kit, extra gear for weather changes (they happen on a dime up here) and supplies for a responsible potty break—keep reading for more on that.
HOW TO POO IN THE WILDERNESS
Ew! Gross. Whatever, we all do it. BUT, if you leave toilet paper behind—or worse, a pile of poo on the trail—you're doing it wrong. Be prepared to pack it out (the t.p., not the poo; dig a cat hole and bury that sh*t). Hike about 70 paces offtrail, away from water or camp, and dig a little hole, cover it up and you are good to go.
RESPECT WILDLIFE
This one seems obvious but is worth repeating: you should never, under any circumstances, feed the wildlife. Even if an animal appears to be begging, or looks underweight, feeding is still off 28
DISCOVER HAILEY & THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2022
limits (although underweight animals can and should be reported to a park ranger). This includes “accidentally” feeding the wildlife by having a messy campsite, not using wildlife-proof containers while backpacking, and littering.
PACK IT IN, PACK IT OUT This one is pretty easy to grasp. If it's not a natural part of the environment (food, trash, dog poop, etc.), then take it out. Yes, it's okay to fill your backpack with stuff you "find" on the trail from other adventurers who don't know any better. In fact, tuck an extra bag for trash into your pack and become a steward of the environment.
RESPECT OTHER RECREATORS Wilderness areas are meant to be places where visitors can "get away from it all" and can enjoy quiet time in nature. Being respectful can be as simple as yielding to uphill hikers and knowing and respecting the rules for motorized recreation.
TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR SAFETY Practice these tips and you'll never find yourself out without a headlamp after dark or a map to get you home safely. Leave your ego at the trailhead and be prepared to abort if you get beyond your ability or run into inclement weather. Nothing is worth risking your own or your group's safety or wasting local search and rescue resources if it could have been easily avoided. We get it, accidents happen, but take responsibility to reduce your risk.

ne of the biggest reasons why so many of us choose to live in or visit the Wood River Valley is because of our backyard. While we certainly love the culture and sense of community the four small towns of our Valley offer, it’s what’s just beyond town that really connects us all. The beauty of our part of the Northern Rockies and the playground it is home to are tough to top. Whether you like hiking, skiing or mountain biking, fishing, photography, plein air painting or simply witnessing the wonders of nature with your kids or grandkids, the Wood River Valley is a magical place. That’s because it’s easy to enjoy all these things and much more simply by heading out into our backyard. To help you make the most out of all the Wood River Valley has to offer, here’s a rundown of some of our favorite backyard adventures.

HIKING Short Drives
Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve offers up some of the most unique terrain in the country, making it a popular spot for day hikes. Located just over an hour’s drive southeast of the Wood River Valley, Craters of the Moon is an island of lava flows and cinder cones sprawled out in the midst of the “Sagebrush Sea,” as they call the high desert of southern Idaho. Formed during volcanic eruptions over 15,000 years ago, the monument was signed into order by President Calvin Coolidge in 1923. In 1969, Apollo 14 astronauts came to train for their moonwalk by hiking around Craters. Craters of the Moon offers eight hikes from short strolls to an 8-mile trek. It also offers a unique snowshoeing option in the winter. The Monument is open year-round and its Visitor Center is open daily.
Short Drives
Sawtooth Valley The Sawtooth Valley is considered to be one of the most beautiful mountain valleys on the planet. “Just over the hill,” as most locals say, from the Wood River Valley, the Sawtooth Valley is another short drive that is full of hiking, fishing, mountain biking and water-related fun. After crossing Galena Summit—and stopping to take a photo at the Scenic Overlook—the Sawtooth Valley is sprinkled with a series of high mountain lakes. Redfish Lake is the most famous of the drive-to lakes and is named after the once prolific salmon that return some 900 miles from the sea to spawn each year. The Sawtooth Fish Hatchery, located right along Scenic Highway 75, is a great place to see salmon and steelhead. Endless hiking options can be found along both sides of the highway, especially if you head into the Sawtooth Mountains.

Mountain Humane Finding Safe Homes for Stray Animals Celebrating 50 years of saving animals and changing lives BY ANNIE MCCAULEY
In February of 1972 a group of concerned community members, that included Dr. Beebe of the Sun Valley Animal Clinic, formed a nonprofit organization and started The Animal Hospice. The goal was to provide a home for stray animals in the Wood River Valley. Five years later, Bill and Jean Burt donated land along Croy Creek Road and a 3,000-square-foot hospice with 20 kennels was built to care for unwanted animals and to be the home of an adoption program. Today, the full-service animal shelter is located across the street from its first home and, true to its rich history, Mountain Humane, as it’s now known, is still saving animals and changing lives! Each day Mountain Humane opens its doors to reunite lost pets with their owners, offer a safe haven for homeless animals, and offer consultation and assistance to keep families and their pets together whenever possible. As a community service center, the shelter provides: a veterinary clinic offering affordable routine veterinary services; certified trainers and behavior experts; temporary boarding and pet food support available for families going through a rough economic time.

Enrichment and safety are the cornerstones of the daily work done at Mountain Humane for every dog and cat. Dogs are walked at least three times a day to minimize stress. Playgroups for socialization and “nose work” help pups use their best “sense” to search and exercise their problem-solving skills. If you’re a kitty, your space might include a maze, climbing structures, and an outside “catio” to breathe in the Wood River Valley’s fresh air. Volunteers continue to be the backbone of Mountain Humane’s work. Volunteer-run summer programs like Hikin` Buddies take place at Adams Gulch every week, where people can hike with a shelter dog and perhaps “walk away” with a new family member. Keep your eye out for pups wearing green “Adopt Me” vests when “Paws Around the Town” volunteers and their adoptable buddies are out and about. And if kitties are your thing, join the year-round “Cat Cozy Club,” which meets the second Wednesday of every month to knit its way into the hearts of our feline friends in one of Mountain Humane’s cat condos. Visitors to the shelter are welcome Tuesday through Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adoptions are done by appointment and involve a consultation with an experienced adoption counselor to match your family with just the right dog or cat.
Hooray for SNRA! Sawtooth National Recreation Area Turns 50 Truly one of the greatest gems in our state. PHOTO VISIT IDAHO
On a warm summer day in 1972, the Sawtooth National Recreation Area was created to "assure the preservation and protection of the natural, scenic, historic, pastoral, and fish and wildlife values and to provide for the enhancement of the recreational values associated therewith.” The SNRA covers over 765,000 acres in the middle of the Gem State and includes three mountain ranges: the Boulders, the Sawtooths and White Clouds. There are over 700 miles of trails, 32

40 peaks rising over 10,000 feet and 300-plus high-elevation alpine lakes in the recreation area. The SNRA is beloved for its endless options to backpack, bike and boat, camp, hike and fish, and to simply enjoy time with nature. The SNRA Headquarters north of Ketchum and the Ktechum Ranger Station on Sun Valley Road are open weekdays.

HIKING Places to Stay
Stanley The quaint and rustic town of Stanley is busiest in the summer, when it becomes a hub for bikers, hikers and rafters. The greater Stanley area is home to more than a dozen hotels, lodges and rental options as well as countless camping choices. Stanley is also home to more than a dozen restaurants and bars, although most of them are only open during the warm-weather months. For more information about dining or lodging, please contact the Stanley Chamber of Commerce at www.StanleyCC.org or call 208.774.3411
Out the Backdoor
If you love to hike, there are endless hiking options leading from every community in the Wood River Valley—from short, dogand family-friendly strolls like the Howard Preserve in Bellevue or the Sellgren Trail in Ketchum, to long jaunts into the mountains like Quigley Canyon in Hailey or Trail Creek just beyond Sun Valley. Easy: Hailey Greenway runs along the Big Wood River and is a perfect place for youngsters to take a hike. One of the most popular places to walk dogs or hit the river for some fishing, the Greenway runs from the Wood River Land Trust’s Draper Wood River Preserve just off Bullion Street in Hailey, down through the Colorado Gulch Preserve off Broadford Road. Variable: Adams Gulch may be the most popular hiking (and dog walking) spot in the Wood River Valley. Nestled in the tree-covered hills just north of Ketchum, Adams Gulch offers a variety of hiking options, with all kinds of loops for any energy level. If you don’t mind crossing paths with people and pets, this is the perfect hiking spot for you.

Challenging: Bald Mountain Trail covers what is best known during the winter as the Sun Valley Ski Area. With stunning views of the surrounding mountains and access options that include a gondola ride, the Bald Mountain Trail is a must for any hiking fan. It isn’t an easy hike, however, as the trail covers 3,200 vertical feet in five miles. That’s why some folks ride the gondola up and then hike back down. THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2021

MTN. BIKING Out the Backdoor
Bald Mountain Once the snow melts, Bald Mountain opens for the mountain biking business— and business couldn’t be better. Lift access riding on Baldy is about as much fun as you can have on two wheels. From the new flow trails to miles of downhill track, riding Sun Valley is tough to top. Adams Gulch Adams Gulch just north of Ketchum and Carbonate Mountain just across the river from Hailey are two of the most popular places to ride, but there are great trails and plenty of old dirt roads into the mountains to explore throughout the Valley. Fatbike Phenomenon There used to come a time each fall when we’d all put our bikes away for the season and grab our skis. But now we just swap out our road or mountain bike for a fatbike. With tires twice as big as a normal mountain bike, fatbikes are good in snowy and slushy conditions. Fatbikes have actually been around for well over a decade, but they’ve really begun to take off in popularity over the last few years. With the Wood River Trail offering 20 miles of groomed paths perfect for fatbiking, going for a bike ride during the winter no longer sounds like a nutty idea. Pump Tracks Ketchum Bike Park (700 2nd Ave.): A great pump park, grassy rest areas, shade tree and shrub plantings, and bench and bleacher seating. Trail Park & Track (Quigley Canyon): Made of dirt, clay rollers and berms, a pump track offers a great way for kids of all ages to get active, get a core workout and develop great off-road biking skills. 34
PHOTO JENNI FRANKLIN
Sun Valley may have been founded on skiing, but it’s becoming known as a mountain biking mecca. The entire area is full of good dirt, a great variety of terrain and over 400 miles of single track to explore. There are also plenty of fun and unique rides just a short drive away at places like Fisher Creek, but if you love to ride, there’s really no reason to leave the backyard.
HIKING & BIKING GEAR You can get everything you need to go hiking and biking at a variety of convenient locations. Everything from boots to water bottles, hats to weather-proof hoodies can be found in our local shops. Not only are there several awesome places to buy or rent bikes, or any gear you need for some two-wheeling adventure around here, the staffs are top notch, too. It is pretty easy to spend the day talking about the things you love, after all, and the Wood River Valley is full of mountain biking fans. Sturtevants has full-service bike shops on Main Street in Hailey and at the Cycle Haus in Ketchum. Pete Lane’s Mountain Sports is the biking headquarters in Sun Valley and the one-of-a-kind Power House Pub and Bike Fit Studio in Hailey prides itself on offering great burgers, beer and bikes. GRINDING What is Gravel Grinding?
Just Right Off-Road Adventure More off-road adventure than a pavement ride, gravel grind riding is a unique mix of on and off-road riding, sometimes with some single track that allows you to cover miles and see incredible off-road Idaho areas. Underground races and organized events, such as Rebecca’s Private Idaho, have cemented the concept of gravel-grind riding to all who love bike adventures. Today, purpose-built gravel bikes are sturdy, but designed for off-pavement use, with good tires, a slightly more upright position, longer wheel base and disk brakes. Gravel grinder bikes bring the best of both worlds – from smooth single track to epic road rides – into the same outing Pick up the full Travels on Gravel map with all 12 rides in Hailey & South Idaho at the Hailey Welcome Center or download at haileyidaho.com/gravel
Our Favorite Travels on Gravel be a left turn onto Poverty Flats Road. This 10 - Easy - Quigley Loop Trail/Rd. 4.2 miles. 642’ elevation gain. About 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
A perfect beginner or quick gravel ride, especially good for young children. Start at the trailhead on Quigley Road, just past the end of the pavement. Ride out on the single-track trail to the pond and loop back on the other side of Quigley Canyon until the trail crosses the field and returns to the trailhead on Quigley Road. Or ride the road out to the pond and return on the trail; it’s easier descending on the trail. 1B - Moderate - Classic Rock Creek to Poverty Flats Loop 35 miles. 1,500’ elevation gain. Expect 2-1/2 to 3/1/2 hours.
turn is easy to miss, but marked by a couple of galvanized storage tanks. Continue on Poverty Flats Road on rolling terrain followed by a 2.3-mile climb and fast descent to Glendale Road. Continue on Glendale Road, crossing Highway 75. Take a right turn just before Bellevue Farms subdivision and follow around to the south and then connect with Gannett Road. Head back to Hailey via the bike path starting in Bellevue or alternately on Broadford Road. 7 - Difficult - Muldoon Canyon A “big” ride with lots of vertical. 16 miles. 1,500’ elevation gain. About 2-3 hours.
This out-and-back ride on a gravel road is only lightly traveled but rough in places. It follows Seamans Gulch in a narrow shady This ride is a classic tour of the west Hailey canyon until it starts the climb to Muldoon gravel. It is best ridden counter-clockwise Summit. Start from Bellevue on Muldoon and rides in reverse of some of the same Road and pass turnoffs to Martin Canyon roads in the Travels on Gravel map. Start in on the left, and to Sharps Canyon on the Hailey and head west on Croy Creek Road. right (see separate rides for those) until you At about 5 miles, turn left on View Road/ start climbing in an open basin. At the Rock Creek Road (at Rock Creek Ranch summit you can stop and enjoy views of the sign). At approximately 10 miles, there will Pioneer mountains before descending.

FISHING Out the Backdoor
BIG WOOD RIVER The Big Wood River carves its way through the Valley it’s named for. That’s why no matter where you are in the Wood River Valley, you’re never far from the river. The Big Wood offers ample access throughout most of its 60-mile run to Magic Reservoir. Early spring is the only time the river is completely closed to fishing. Meanwhile, the other three seasons on the Big Wood make for some pretty idyllic alpine fishing. The freestone river is full of trout and gorgeous views that make you feel a lot farther away from civilization than you are. PHOTO COURTESY SILVER CREEK OUTFITTERS, PHOTO BY DAVID REILLY
FISHING Short Drives
Fly Fishing Highway Fishing is a big part of the appeal of our little neck of the Northern Rockies. Part of the “Fly Fishing Highway,” as they call Highway 20, even rolls right through the southern section of Blaine County. The two-lane highway is a short drive from Hailey or Ketchum and passes the legendary waters of Silver Creek. Silver Creek Preserve When The Nature Conservancy first preserved Silver Creek back in 1976, it became a watershed moment in spring creek and fisheries conservation. It was really the first conservation project of its kind anywhere, and its success has inspired numerous such projects around the world. That’s one of the reasons why fishing the gin-clear waters of Silver Creek is such a special event in any angler’s life—even when you’re as lucky as we locals are to fish it all the time. There’s never a bad day on Silver Creek, because even though the fishing isn’t easy, it’s always a rewarding experience.
38
Magic Reservoir It’s tough not to like a place called Magic Reservoir. The largest manmade lake in the area has several access points and is popular for bait, lure and fly fishing during the warmer months and ice fishing in the winter. Fed by the Big Wood River, when Magic Reservoir is full it covers nearly 4,000 acres and five miles of high-desert terrain. Besides fishing, Magic is a popular spot for waterskiers and stand-up paddleboarding. While trout—and big ones at that—are caught with regularity at both Silver Creek and Magic Reservoir, Magic is also one of the best places around to catch bass.
Places to Stay
SILVER CREEK HOTEL Silver Creek Hotel in Bellevue is the closest lodging. Other quality nearby options include the Fairfield Inn, AmericInn, Airport Inn or The Inn at Ellsworth Estate bed and breakfast in Hailey. The Limelight Hotel in Ketchum is pet friendly and there is a variety of options at the Sun Valley Resort. Every hotel mentioned offers pools and/or hot tubs. There is also a variety of camping options by Silver Creek, including in Picabo and at the Hayspur Fish Hatchery and Point of Rocks recreation area.
DISCOVER HAILEY & THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2022
Making its way from the snowy mountains above Sun Valley, Trail Creek offers some pretty sweet small-stream fishing. The chilly waters of the creek get stocked often during the height of the fishing season. Trail Creek also passes by the Hemingway Memorial, adding another attraction to spending some time exploring the small mountain stream.
FISHING GEAR Two of the best in the fishing business, Silver Creek Outfitters and Lost River Outfitters, can be found on Main Street in Ketchum. They both offer full-service tackle shops and knowledgeable staffs. They also offer a variety of guided fishing experiences, from full to half days, for one person or for the whole family. One trip on the water and you’ll see why Sun Valley has long been known for offering some of the best fishing guides in the country. Lost River Outfitters 371 N. SKIING Sun Valley is not only home to America’s first destination ski resort, we’re also home to the first ski lift. You can even see its remnants at Proctor Mountain, just east of the resort. We’re awfully proud of our skiing history around here, and for good reason. From Sun Valley’s celebrity-filled start in 1936 to officially being named “Nordic Town USA” a few years ago, skiing is part of the foundation of our community. One of the biggest reasons skiing is so big around here is that we offer something for everyone. Maybe you like Black Diamond bump runs or carving endless slalom turns on Baldy. Perhaps playing in the terrain parks or learning to ski or board on Dollar is more you’re style. Maybe you like to Nordic or crosscountry ski on our more than 100 miles of regular groomed trails. Or maybe you love to earn your turns and hit the backcountry and carve tracks along Galena Summit. Even if a simple snowshoe followed by a cup of hot cocoa is you’re style, we’ve got you covered there, too. Baldy Baldy, also referred to as the Sun Valley Ski Resort, offers 100 runs and 3,400 vertical feet of alpine skiing. Baldy is well known for its consistent snow (averaging nearly 20 feet each ski season) and groomed runs, which are some of the best in the world thanks to the nation’s finest snowmaking system. Dollar Mountain Dollar Mountain is located on the other side of Ketchum from Baldy. Offering 22 runs and nearly 1,000 feet of vertical, Dollar is home to a variety of terrain parks that get changed through-
Sturtevants Warm Springs 215 Picabo St., Ketchum (Right at the base of Warm Springs)
(208) 726-SKIS (7547) out the season. It also offers a Magic Carpet and plenty of runs for those new to skiing. Rotarun Rotarun is the “little mountain with the big heart” in Hailey. Skiing and riding is available on weekends at the 475-foot-high ski hill. The ticket price to ride the J-bar is a simple donation to the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, which runs Rotarun and offers learn-to-ski programs there for elementary school kids. Sun Valley Heli-Ski Most people don’t realize that Sun Valley Heli-Ski was issued the first U.S. Forest Service heli-ski permit in 1966 and is still lucky enough to lay claim to the largest permit in the lower 48 states. Their skiable terrain includes three ranges (Smoky, Boulder and Pioneer mountains) and covers more than 750,000 acres. Nordic Trails Nordic skiing in the Wood River Valley is as good as it gets. From Quigley Canyon in Hailey, following the groomed Wood River Trail (which also serves as the bike path) over to Sun Valley Resort’s Nordic Center and then up through the Sawtooth National Recreational Area to Galena Lodge, you can find some of the best crosscountry and skate skiing in America. Soldier Mountain Soldier Mountain is located in the Sawtooth National Forest just north of Fairfield. The mountain is great for families, offers 36 runs and cat skiing that gives adventurers access to Smoky Dome, the highest peak in the Soldier Mountains.

For more than a decade, Hailey Ice was just a dream. But thanks to the tireless work of an impassioned group of locals and our community’s generosity, what was once only a dream has become a reality. Hailey has been home to a world-class ice rink for four years now and things have turned out even better than expected. “It has been amazing, “said Sarah Benson, executive director for Hailey Ice. “On one hand, it has met our expectations. On the other, it has exceeded them.” Hailey Ice is located on Main Street in Hailey and is open from late September through mid-March. It offers public skating, stick-andpuck, open hockey and youth tournaments throughout the season and is the home of the Sun Valley Suns of the Black Diamond Hockey League. PROUD TO BE A DREAMER Actress Stephanie Andujar shares her story BY MIKE MCKENNA
PHOTOS COURTESY OF I HAVE A DREAM FOUNDATION
“Stephanie Andujar is a shining example of what it means when we give kids an opportunity to find their path to success.” That’s what Laura Rose-Lewis, the Executive Director of I Have A Dream (IHDF) Idaho, said as she introduced Stephanie to a crowd at The Community Library in Ketchum. Stephanie first got involved with IHDF when she was a young girl growing up on the tough streets of New York City. Now 35, she is a successful actress, including playing big roles in the Academy-Award winning film Precious, and popular TV shows like Blue Bloods, Law & Order and Orange is the New Black. Stephanie attributes her success to the two pillars of support she’s had in her life: her mom, Carmen, and the I Have A Dream Foundation. “I’m standing here today thanks to I Have A Dream,” Stephanie said, as she fought back tears. “If it wasn’t for them this little Puerto Rican girl wouldn’t be here.”
IHDF was officially founded in 1986, but was actually born several years earlier. When successful businessman Eugene Lang was asked to speak to sixth graders at his old East Harlem elementary school, he planned on telling them that hard work was the key to success. But when he found out that only about 25% of them were likely to graduate from high school, he changed his speech. Instead he promised to help pay the college tuition of any kids who would go on to graduate. Eugene made 61 new friends that day, and nearly all of them went on to graduate from high school. There are now over 200 IHDF programs across the world. The nonprofit foundation helps assure that all children, especially those from under-resourced backgrounds, have the opportunity to pursue higher education, fulfill their potential, and achieve their dreams. IHDF provides academic, social and emotional support from elementary school through college, along with post-secondary tuition assistance. THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2022

BLAINE COUNTY SCHOOLS EMBRACE & EDUCATE
Community means something around here and our education system is committed to building foundations that create exceptional humans. When the world seems to be moving away from unique forms of education, our school district is embracing all the different ways students learn. Our teachers, in both public and private schools, are combining real-world experiences with academics to build confident and passionate humans who will have a lifelong passion for learning.
BLAINE COUNTY SCHOOL RESOURCES SENIOR DREAM SCHOLARS AND PROGRAM DIRECTOR, PAMELA DONOSO, (SECOND FROM RIGHT) WORKING TOGETHER ON VISION BOARDS.
Stephanie started with IHDF in third grade and stayed with the foundation all the way through Talent Unlimited High School and then Pace University, even when she had to take a break from her studies for acting roles. “They didn’t say, 'No,' to my dreams. They were always there for me,” Stephanie said. “What makes Dreamers so strong is the foundation they grow up in. It’s more like a family; there’s sense of community. I feel so proud to be a Dreamer.” Stephanie still stays in touch with other Dreamers. “We’re everywhere,” she said. “Some folks think that minorities aren’t capable of learning. But we’re all human beings. We’re just all different,” she said. “I Have a Dream doesn’t make you feel like have to prove anything. It reminds you that you are enough.” When asked about the keys to overcoming challenges in life, Stephanie leaned back on her IHDF background. “There’s no excuse for not doing what you want to in life. You’ve just got to do it, that’s how you get ahead in life,” she said. “We have it in us to not give up.” To find out more, go to IHDFIdaho.org.

Keep people healthy. That’s one of the big reasons it was so important for FHS It’s why they are extremely thankful that the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation helped them to open a location in Bellevue. It not only relieves expand their services to the Wood River Valley and pressure on their entire system, it makes it easier and open a new location in Bellevue. cost effective for local people to make visits. “If it weren’t for more“We “We want to provide affordable medical, mental are putting our services where the people the St. Luke’s health and dental visits as well as pharmacy costs are, “Houston said. “We are making things so afso that we can help people maintain health,” said fordable that everyone can have more preventative Wood River Aaron Houston, the CEO for FHS. “We want to health care. stepped in to save the day. They generously paid for a remodel of the building on Main Street as well as for new equipment and five years of rent. “If it weren’t for the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation, there’s no way this would have happened,” Houston said. FHS is considered a community health center and accepts patients of any age or income status. Their Bellevue location offers everything from helping with coughs and colds, to dental and mental health issues, to offering affordable pharmaceuticals. These services combine to improve the overall health of the community they serve. One of the keys to success for FHS is that they pride themselves on having great provider retention. The doctors, nurses and staff at FHS stay the same, which helps patients feel more connected and comfortable. “People want to see their doctor. Not just because they have to, but because they want to see a familiar face, someone they know and trust,” Houston said. Having more folks get regular checkups and tests helps assure that many minor issues don’t become major problems. The more preventative we can be with health care, the less likely we are to tax our health care system, or increase the taxes or insurance monies needed to subsidize it. “We are at the grassroots,” Houston said, “helping the community be healthier.”
St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center is the only hospital within a 75-mile radius of Ketchum, Sun Valley, Hailey and Bellevue. SLWRMC maintains 25 inpatient beds with approximately 440 employees and 45 physicians on active staff. Services range from OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Neurology, Orthopedics, and more as well as ENT, Gastroenterology, Urology, Cardiology, Oncology and more through visiting specialists. SLWRMC has a full range of diagnostic laboratory testing, X-ray, CT, EEG, MRI as well as state-of-the-art 3D mammography at the Women’s Imaging Center. SLWRMC is part of St. Luke’s Health System which has multiple hospital campuses and a broad mix of diagnostic and clinical sites that together serve southern Idaho and eastern Oregon. Air St. Luke’s transports patients in critical situations via helicopter, fixed wing or ground transport
Air St. Luke’s is used in case someone needs to be transported via ground, rotor or fixed wing to a larger or specialized health care system outside of our rural community. It is the region’s most comprehensive medical transport program, operating as mobile critical care units with advanced lifesaving equipment and technology. As a Critical Access Hospital with a level IV trauma designation, St. Luke's Wood River Medical Center can stabilize and transport those needing complex or specialized care. Starting at just $60/year (or $1000 for a lifetime membership) any family can sign up for the service and have peace of mind. For more information on membership, please go to stlukesonline.org.

COMMUNITY ENRICHMENT
Celebrating 50 Years of Creativity, Community & Connection BY KRISTA DETWILER, ON BEHALF OF SUN VALLEY MUSEUM OF ART SINCE 1971, SUN VALLEY MUSEUM OF ART (SVMOA) HAS SERVED THIS COMMUNITY—A COMMUNITY THAT IS CURIOUS ABOUT THE WORLD AND EAGER FOR ARTS AND CULTURAL EXPERIENCES. THEY’VE WELCOMED AMAZING ARTISTS AND THINKERS, PROVIDED GENERATIONS OF LOCAL STUDENTS WITH A STRONG FOUNDATION IN THE ARTS, AND CONNECTED OUR COMMUNITY THROUGH CREATIVITY, CONVERSATION AND BIG IDEAS.
Over the last 50 years, Sun Valley Museum of Art has grown from a handful of people presenting classes and events to a professional arts organization that serves more than 40,000 patrons every year. The original campus of the Sun Valley Center for the Arts and Humanities was established on land deeded by Bill Janss, owner of Sun Valley Company (1964-1977). Back in the early days when the Union Pacific Railroad owned Sun Valley Resort, the six-acre property along Trail Creek was the site of kennels where the resort’s sled dogs were kept. For several years, SVMoA flourished at this location as a facility for high-level fine arts residencies and workshops. Many of the artists and faculty that worked at SVMoA in its first two decades have gone on to achieve celebrated careers. Today, Sun Valley Museum of Art is located in Ketchum and has become a cornerstone of the Wood River Valley’s rich and 50

diverse arts scene. The Museum's commitment to education and this community has never wavered and is reflected in programmatic choices that cultivate dialogue around relevant regional and national issues. Recognized as a thought leader in our state and region, SVMoA's exhibition program is nimble and responsive, considering subjects that enhance our community’s understanding of place or current moment. As a non-collecting institution, SVMoA is uniquely suited to invite the most appropriate artists to explore the specifics of a topic or an issue and regularly offers opportunities to artists and musicians to develop new work. The Sun Valley Center for the Arts and Humanities, now called the Sun Valley Museum of Art, was founded in 1971 on the belief that a community cannot be built solely from the presence of a beautiful mountain but needs arts and culture to be both vital and sustainable. Since its founding SVMoA has aspired to enrich our community through transformative arts and educational experiences. As the oldest arts organization in the Wood River Valley and one of only five institutions in Idaho accredited by the American Alliance of Museums, SVMoA serves as the Wood River Valley’s cultural anchor, bringing families, friends, visitors and residents together for shared arts experiences. SVMoA offers exceptional year-round programming in visual arts, music, film, and the humanities.

TIPS FOR PLANNING MORE THAN JUST A WEDDING BY CLOUDS MCCLOUD

PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE MARIE PHOTOGRAPHY
manda Seaward of Absolute Weddings has been a wedding planner in the Wood River Valley for nearly 20 years. While she’s seen a bit of change in the industry over the years, one thing has stayed the same: The Wood River Valley is still an exceptional place to get married. “Weddings here are so special and unique compared to most,” Amanda said. “That’s why people love to come to weddings here." For most brides and grooms it’s important that their guests have a good time. Guests don’t just come to a Sun
Valley wedding for a weekend, they come for a whole vacation and everything the Valley has to offer. They come to escape and to relax. And that’s pretty easy to accomplish in our nook of the Northern Rockies. “There’s so much to do here, everything from heading up to Redfish Lake for the day or having lunch at Galena Lodge, to doing something special at the Sun Valley Resort. You can even pair it up with local events like the Summer Symphony (now the Sun Valley Music Festival) or Trailing of the Sheep,” Amanda said. “There’s also endless hiking and mountain biking and fishing." USE A LOCAL “My philosophy is that you don’t know what you don’t know, and having a local on your side is key,” Amanda said, advising that couples, especially those new to or from outside the area, to hire a local wedding planner. “It’s nice to have someone to help put all the pieces together, especially the schedule,” she said. “It’s also nice to have someone who can answer guest questions and deal with the stress, so the bride and groom can enjoy the day.” Getting in front of things and planning ahead are what Amanda suggests. She helps make sure wedding parties are prepared for everything from transportation, to scheduling multiple events for different interests within the group, to lining up vendors for the kind of food and music desired, to tapping into local resources to “keep things Idaho.”
HAVE A BACKUP PLAN Amanda helps come up with contingency plans in case the weather decides not to cooperate. “Knowing the area and the unique challenges of having a wedding here really helps,” said Amanda. She also helps prepare guests to deal with the altitude of our mile-high location as well as some of the challenges of visiting our small mountain community where some resources can be harder to get.
CONSIDER "OFF SEASON" With weddings in the Wood River Valley growing in popularity, Amanda also said couples should consider thinking beyond the typical July and August wedding dates. Late spring, early fall and even mid-winter can be great times to tie the knot in the heart of the Gem State. Not only can you often get better choices, it can also be a little more friendly on the budget. “Getting married should be one of the best days of your life,” Amanda said. “That’s why it’s a good idea to plan ahead and to get married in a beautiful place like this.”
INVEST IN PHOTOGRAPHY "Photos are the single most important purchase you'll make and you can never redo them," Amanda said. "You'll send them to your mom and dad, your grandma and grandpa, your best friend and everyone else." Your wedding photos will last a lifetime so be sure to carve out a decent budget and hire the very best you can.
PLANNING DOWN TO THE VERY LAST DANCE According to Amanda, planning ahead is the key to a stress-free wedding. And, working with a wedding planner makes it possible for the couple to spend more time cherishing the journey. "Remember," said Amanda, "it should be fun planning all the wedding details, from the reception dress to the appetizers to the first (and last) dance!" THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2022

hey don’t call this place Sun Valley for nothing. Our little slice of “IdaHome” averages over 300 days of sunshine a year. We do our best to make the most out of all this sunshine by playing and partying hard, which is why we have many sweet patios and decks to enjoy our après adventures. Here’s a rundown of some of our favorites. KETCHUM The terrace at The Grill at Knob Hill Inn is a gardener’s delight, ideal for some higher-level dining. Meanwhile, the patio at Grumpy’s offers views of Baldy, delightfully greasy burgers and their legendary schooners of beer. Sawtooth Brewery and Lefty’s both offer small decks and big beers. Bigwood Bread's patio is the perfect place for lunch and some of their hand-made artisan breads and treats. The rooftop decks at the Sawtooth Club and Sun Valley Wine Company offer elevated and exceptionally tasty experiences. Despo's serves outstanding Mexican food at their newly remodeled deck in the heart of town, while the spacious back patio of the Limelight Hotel is tough to top for views, tasty treats and live music during the high seasons. The most famous deck in Ketchum can be found atop the Warfield Distillery & Brewery. The tasty beers and spirits made

on the lower level match the views from the rooftop deck. SUN VALLEY Outdoor dining and world-class fare can be found everywhere you go around Sun Valley. The Lodge offers patios at both Gretchen’s and the Duchin Lounge. The Inn has patio seating at the Ram. The Sun Valley Club’s multi-tiered deck offers impressive views of the Trail Creek Golf Course with Baldy and Dollar mountains in the backdrop. HAILEY Hailey is a very bike-friendly community and Main Street is lined with places to park your bike and enjoy some outdoor dining. Look no further than the popular patio at the Power House Pub & Bike Shop. The bicycle bar has an impressive Europeanheavy beer selection and a small but tasty menu. The patio at Wiseguy Pizza Pie is the perfect place to grab a cold one and a slice. Sun Valley Brewery serves up handcrafted ales, big meals and a nice view of Della Mountain as well as regular live music. Sawtooth Brewery has a small deck, but often opens up the brewhouse doors so live bands have a place to play, leaving plenty of room for dancing. The Wicked Spud is the place to be most
Wednesdays when they host live music in support of local nonprofits. DaVinci’s on Bullion Street and Dang’s Thai Cuisine & Sushi Bar on Main each have a small deck, but serve up big flavors, perfect for fans of authentic Italian or Asian meals, respectively. CK’s Real Food has long served not only some of the best food in Idaho, but its patio is one of the prettiest. BELLEVUE The back deck at Mahoney’s is the place to be in Bellevue for burgers, brews and views of the river. They also have live music on Thursday nights during the summer. The small decks at both Mama Inéz and Silver Dollar Saloon also rock and "the Dollar" has live music on many nights.
COFFEE SPOTS There are also lots of nice places to start your day with some outdoor breakfast refreshments. The large patio at Black Owl Coffee in Hailey is a locals’ favorite and The Coffee House also has a small deck. Hailey Coffee Company and Java both offer outdoor seating at their locations in Hailey and Ketchum and the summer flowerbeds besides the Konditorei’s patio in the Sun Valley Village are some of the nicest around. Maude's in west Ketchum has nice outdoor seating to enjoy the rays. Ashley's Coffee Corner on main street in Bellevue has a nice little patio out front where you can enjoy a great cup of coffee and watch the world hustle by, Idaho style.

HELPING FOLKS FALL IN LOVE WITH SUN VALLEY BY MIKE MCKENNA

There was a bit of trepidation in town when the Limelight Hotel first opened. Smack dab in the middle of Main Street in Ketchum, locals were worried that the Aspen-based hotel brand wouldn’t fit in Idaho’s most beloved ski town. But those fears were short lived and, five years later, the Limelight Hotel is a hit with both visitors and locals alike. “It’s really important that we’re involved and active in the community. We’re not just here to make money, we’re here to be a good member of the community,” Tim Johnson said. Tim is the Director of Sales for the Limelight Hotel and came to Ketchum bringing 35 years of experience in the hospitality industry, including time in other off-the-beaten-path ski towns like Crested Butte, Steamboat and Aspen, Colorado. “I really love this place and the people here. It’s great place to live, work and visit,” he said. “It might be a little harder to get to, but it’s worth it once you arrive. There’s so much to do and enjoy here.” The Limelight is considered “mountain modern” and is both family and dog friendly—just like the Wood River Valley itself. It offers 99 guest rooms as well as 14 residential units on the top two floors. The hotel’s amenities include an outdoor pool and hot tub, conference facilities, a full service restaurant and bar. The Lounge, or “Ketchum’s living room” as it's affectionately called, is a popular spot for live music almost every night of the week during the high seasons. 80

The Limelight also offers a Guest Adventure Program that gives guests the opportunity to do everything from ski Baldy before the lifts open to snowshoeing the backcountry to cruising around the stunning mountain roads of central Idaho in an Audi Q7 or e-tron with their “It’s really Audi Experience program.
important that we’re involved and active in the community." - Tim Johnson
But the real key to success for the Limelight is their top-notch staff and the company’s mission to be a positive part of the community. The Limelight Hotel’s Ketchum Community Fund has donated $163,000 to local nonprofits since they opened and all employees also get two paid days a year to volunteer for their favorite local charity.
“That’s part of the mission here, to be involved and find ways to give back,” Tim said. “One of the most fun parts for me is our staff. They really enjoy being good hosts and we get so many great comments from guests about them,” he said. “We all want people to experience everything the Valley has to offer, to give them a true feel for why locals love it here so much.”

REAL ESTATE WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN LOOKING FOR YOUR DREAM HOME P.S. WE LOVE OUR PETS AROUND HERE PHOTO BY ANN HARRISON
PAUL KENNY MATT BOGUE
COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE
COMMERCIAL OVERVIEW BY MATT GELSO
T
he name of the game in the South Valley the past year has been “Get it while you can!” Fueled by low interest rates and national migration patterns, there has been an exponential change in commercial (and residential) real estate pricing, and in the demographic structure of the Wood River Valley’s southern communities. Indicative of the economic activity in Hailey, the City of Hailey Local Option Tax (LOT) collections for 2021 came in at a record $812,000. This eclipses the pre-pandemic LOT collection record set in 2019 by almost 18%. Multifamily Housing Activity: From 2016 to 2019 the City of Hailey approved an average of 38 multifamily units each year. 2020 and 2021 saw an average of almost 131 units approved each year – that’s a 237% increase. This still has not met the Valley's voracious appetite for workforce housing, but there are projects on the horizon in Hailey and Bellevue. ARCH, North Blaine County Fire District, and Blaine County are all making material investments to ‘move the needle’ on housing solutions. Commercial Office & Retail Activity: If you have tried to find office or retail space in the South Valley, you know the inventory is almost zero. Rents are increasing, but still have not reached a level at which investors are incentivized to build new inventory. However, this has not discouraged investors from buying existing product. Our office, Kenny-Bogue Commercial Real Estate, listed the Marketron Building on River Street (now re-named the Sawtooth Business Center) for sale. We represented the buyers of the property, and were under contract within 10 days. The 17,000 sf building will now have office suites available for lease. The historic Mint restaurant/bar/nightclub on Main Street is for sale again, and is turn-key ready for the perfect operator. Eccles Flying Hat Ranch Update: It sounds like the east side of the ranch will be annexed by both Hailey AND Bellevue, split by the two cities, with the BCRD controlling a buffer in-between for open space and/or sports fields. When the development comes together, we can expect the full range of property types – multiand single-family housing, workforce housing, light industrial/ shop/warehouse, and office/retail properties. The positive local economic trends of the past 18 months are likely to continue through 2022 and into 2023. The Wood River Valley ‘bubble’ does not always follow the national average. And, there is not much that is average about our communities.

ALWAYS A GOOD INVESTMENT Q & A WITH JANE DYNDIUK OF HALLMARK PROPERTIES In the fall of 2000, my husband and I desperately needed a vacation. We headed to Sun Valley from Minnesota. I had read about Ketchum at one point in my life and knew I would visit it someday. We arrived during slack and stayed at the Knob Hill Inn. My husband wined and dined me. We brought our telescope and enjoyed seeing a dark sky full of stars. We ate at wonderful restaurants. We fly fished. We hiked and walked through town and absorbed the Western vibe. One morning, he arranged for us to meet a realtor. I asked why. He said we were moving. And just like that, we did and never looked back. What do you enjoy about selling real estate? One of the joys of being a realtor here is that you know your inventory. As an experienced realtor and past school district employee, I know each neighborhood and each school and what a good fit might be for you and your family. What makes the Wood River Valley such a great place to live? One of my favorite things here is that children still ride their bikes to school and after a few years, you know many people in town.
What advice do you have for people who want to purchase a home here? Patience is required in our real estate market. At this moment, our inventory is low. This could change in an instant. Keep yourself in the position to be able to move quickly when a property hits the market and I give you a call. Be open to look at properties that you may not have considered before. Our square footage may seem small, but our great outdoors is where you will spend your time. THE NUMBERS
