WELCOME TO THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY L ETTER FRO M O U R BO A R D

W

ow, what a ride! No one could have predicted what was coming in 2020, and as you know, our valley was struck hard in the early stages of the caronavirus pandemic. Because of our dedication to work together, we have come forward stronger than ever. The definition of resilience "is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties," and the Wood River Valley is more resilient than ever. We have seen community partners come together to provide community resources with the Blaine County Recovery group, www.blainerecovery.org, which was the first in the state. We have seen our community and nonprofits working together to keep our citizens and businesses safe and healthy.

LEFT: CHRISTINA CERNANSKY, RIGHT: JENNI RILEY

A large number of nonprofits in the Wood River Valley are among the many things that set us apart. We have dozens of nonprofits, 80 will be included in the upcoming edition of the Giving Guide of the Wood River Valley, www.givinguidewrv.org. According to the Idaho Nonprofit Center, these organizations statewide generate $3 billion a year in revenue and represent the sixth largest employment-segment in Idaho. Our community and businesses not only support these nonprofits by donating, but they also provide valuable volunteer hours. Idaho ranks fifth in the nation for volunteer contributions per capita, which means that 34% of Idaho residents volunteer their time for a cause. Nonprofits provide many services here in our valley but also lead the charge for many activities that draw visitors from around the world. Trail maintenance, theater, arts, ballet, symphony, recreational activities, and basic human needs are just a few of the services that are due in part to our nonprofits. We are all in this together, now more than ever. You know nonprofits are essential to our community, both socially and economically, when our Chamber president is the executive director of National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), and the VP is the founding director of the Giving Guide. A majority of our board members serve various nonprofits throughout the valley. We recognize that mental health and wellbeing is vital to ensuring the resiliency in the Wood River Valley and that mental health conversations are critical to have in the workplace. How can you, as an employer, support your employees; how can you, as an employee, support your customers? Reach out, connect; you are not alone. So join us and enjoy the recreation, shopping, restaurants, and the beautiful scenery our valley has to offer. We hope you get to meet the people of our valley while you're here also. We are all in this together! Welcome to our slice of heaven. #WeAre1WoodRiver Christina Cernansky President, Chamber of the Wood River Valley Executive Director, NAMI Wood River Valley Jenni Riley Vice President, Chamber of the Wood River Valley Hazlett Wealth Management, LLC Giving Guide of the Wood River Valley

5 REASONS TO JOIN THE CHAMBER 1 IT'S GOOD MARKETING We’re proud of the people and businesses that make up The Chamber of Hailey and the Wood River Valley and we love to share their news and events. We market through our new website, our weekly e-Newsletters, popular Facebook page and our growing Instagram account. We celebrate our members through our nationally distributed Guide and our Chamber Corner columns in The Wood River Weekly. We help create and pay for print, radio, television and online advertisements. And we do lots of old school, person-to-person marketing, too.

2 YOU GET IN THE GUIDE Each year we publish our award-winning Discover Hailey & the Wood River Valley Guide. Designed to look and read like a lifestyle magazine, our annual Guide is produced locally and helps visitors and folks interested in moving here learn about all our area has to offer. The Guide stars our Chamber members and gets sent all over the country as well as read thousands of times online.

3 IT'S A GOOD BUSINESS INVESTMENT Joining The Chamber is a tax-deducible business expense. That’s why being part of The Chamber of Hailey and Wood River Valley and taking advantage of all we have to offer is one of the best marketing deals your business or nonprofit will ever find. 10

4 IT GETS YOU & YOUR STAFF NETWORKING One of the most rewarding things The Chamber does is to connect people. We help create relationships amongst fellow business and community members, especially at our two monthly events, Wake Up with The Chamber (on the second Tuesday morning) and our “BAHs” or Business After Hours (on the third Thursday evening). They are always free, open to the public and a fun way to make new connections, hear local news and catch up with familiar faces.

5 IT‘S AN IMPACTFUL WAY TO SUPPORT Every time you support The Chamber or our members you are making a direct and positive impact on our community. You help thousands of local employees—your family, friends and neighbors—who work at Chamber businesses and nonprofits. You support lots of Chamberbacked events that make life here better, from the 5B Father’s Day Bash to bringing back the SheepTown Drag Races, from the Fourth of July fireworks to Trailing of the Sheep. We also help thousands of visitors at the Welcome Center in Hailey and answer phone calls about everything from snow and flooding issues to the best places to camp, ski, hike, shop, eat, drink and be merry. Most people don’t realize that The Chamber is a nonprofit with the simple goal of helping our businesses and community. We appreciate your support and having you be part of the solution.

JUMPING INTO A MOUNTAIN LIFESTYLE If you moved here for the winter and stayed for the summer, you wouldn’t be the first. BY CHRIS MILLSPAUGH

he saying goes, “I came to visit for a weekend and ended up The Muleshoe in Hailey and the old Sam’s Club in Bellevue. Soon, staying all of my life.” That’s what happened to a lot of people we had rented a house and acquired quite a number of friends who who’ve ended up in the Wood River Valley over the years— guided us through the first three years until we officially attained the including me. status of “locals.” (That was the generally accepted I arrived here in the spring of 1974 with my wife rule of thumb for becoming accepted in the Wood and two sons in a 1961 Ford Econoline van with carRiver Valley). Yes, you’ll love this place and you’ll love the people, as well. You’ll find that we’re all in this together one harsh winter day when you’ve driven into a ditch and someone you hardly know stops and pulls you out, asking for nothing in return. Or, when you have to run to a meeting but you have a bunch of kids you cannot leave and your neighbor says, “Bring them over here. I’ll watch them like my own.” Or, when a forest fire crests Mount Baldy and you fear losing all of your possessions, kind folks come by and load your valuables in their trucks and store them in their garages in the next town out of danger. Or, if you come upon hard times, are ill or injured and can’t work, these same locals will throw a benefit

Yes, you’ll love this place and you’ll love the people, as well. You’ll find that we’re all in this together... for you to help you pay the rent. They’ll celebrate your birthday, your kids’ birthdays, your successes, your milestones and will be genuinely happy for you. Soon, you’ll be doing for others as they have done for you. Friends and families are the great assets up here and strong bonds between people are quickly formed. I have never had so much fun in my life as just being a part of this great community. You can try your hand at anything you ever dreamed of doing, even things you didn’t know existed. At various times I’ve been a humor columnist, a radio disc jockey with my own soap opera five days a week, a producer of a live weekly comedy show, an announcer at the Wagon Days Big Hitch Parade (the largest non-motorized parade in the country) and the Trailing of the Sheep parade, wrote three books, became an historian at The Community Library and a maven on Ernest Hemingway’s life, played music in almost every bar in three towns, sold firewood and Christmas tree permits and mapped out wilderness trips for tourists at the Sawtooth National Recreational Area Headquarters visitor center. I found ways to make a living up here so that I could stay. You, too, can enjoy this wonderful mountain life whether you’re a novice carpenter or a full-fledged movie star. What does the future hold for the Wood River Valley? A bustling economy, a thriving airport dedicated to serving our community, visitors and business in the area, a shopping mall in the south county and perhaps even passenger walkways built over the streets (probably not those last two). Businesses, bars and restaurants come and go, but there’s always opportunity for those with new ideas and a new plan. Maybe you’ll have the answer. We’re not alone anymore. First-rate entertainers perform here and elite athletes compete at world-class sporting events. Visitors are welcome—most of us were one at one time. Should you decide to stay, I’ll be here to welcome you (and pull you out of the ditch if you need it.) THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2020

umbers can help tell the story of a place. Here’s the nittygritty about Blaine County, Idaho, and the communities of the Wood River Valley, in particular.

OUR COMMUNITIES

1 BLAINE COUNTY

OUR ENVIRONMENT Located about 65 miles north of Twin Falls, Blaine County covers 2,661 square miles and stretches from the Salmon River drainage in the north to the Snake River in the south. The 137-mile-long Big Wood River drains the central portion of the county. Approximately 80% of the county’s land area is protected federal and state land. There are 82 peaks above 10,000 feet, the tallest of which is Hyndman Peak (elev. 12,008’). Mountain ranges include the Pioneer, Boulder, White Cloud, Smoky, and Sawtooth Mountains. There are 62 lakes in the county, including two-mile-long Alturas Lake south of Stanley and numerous small alpine lakes.

OUR PEOPLE Blaine County’s total population was 22,024 in 2017, an increase of 16% over 2010. The population is 94.9% white and 21.7% Hispanic. Blaine County’s people are highly educated relative to the rest of the state and the nation, with more than 40% of residents having earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. 2017 per capita income in Blaine County ($32,736) was the highest of Idaho’s 44 counties, and the county’s median household income ($58,835) exceeded that of the state ($50,985) and the nation as a whole ($57,652). 20

HEALTH CARE Here for you and your family! BY MIKE MCKENNA

PHOTOS COURTESY SLWR

T

he coronavirus crisis hit the Wood River Valley hard. At one point, we were home to the highest per-capita rate in the country. But the pandemic didn’t destroy our community. In fact, it showed our strength, led by the frontline workers at St. Luke’s Wood River Medical Center (SLWR). St. Luke’s—as locals call it—put together a task force to begin preparing for COVID-19 in January. Resources were allocated such as physicians, staff and supplies to assist us. CDC guidelines and best-practice recommendations were followed. Policies and practices were updated to align with our needs to battle the pandemic as Sun Valley became ground zero in Idaho. But what appeared for a while to be a catastrophe was kept under control. Hundreds of locals came down with the virus, including the physicians and staff at SLWR. Our medical system, our political leaders and our community all worked together for the health of everyone. Since St. Luke’s Health System has facilities around Southern Idaho, patients were transferred to St. Luke’s in nearby Twin Falls, and resources were deployed to keep critical care open for the community. Transfer-

24

DISCOVER HAILEY & THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2020

ring inpatients allowed SLWR to recover quickly, adding back services and avoid being completely overwhelmed. After weathering the storm of COVID-19, our health care system is better prepared for another round of the virus or any other crisis that may come our way. “Our model incorporates a number of variables to predict COVID cases on a short and long-term basis in order to prepare and plan for a potential increase in cases and possible hospitalizations,” said Carmen Jacobsen, the chief operating Officer/Chief Nursing Officer for St. Luke’s Wood River. Best practices were adopted and will continue to evolve to keep our local health care providers and patients safe, such as universal masking, thermal scanners and e-check-in for appointments. St. Luke’s Health System was also able to accelerate the rollout of virtual visits, via telehealth, for many service lines in order to provide care outside of the walls of the hospital and clinic setting. Virtual care is integrated into St. Luke’s in many ways, with a variety of service lines, including wellness checks and behavioral health.

“A virtual visit is a real-time, audio-visual interaction between patients/families and providers using telehealth technology. It occurs via myChart and can take place on a tablet or smartphone. Some e-visits can also occur over the telephone without video,” explained Dr. Frank Batcha, a physician with SLWR Family Medicine and Chief of Staff for SLWR. At St. Luke’s, virtual care is an efficient and relatively easy way to deliver clinical care. Patients can contact their primary care provider or specialist to inquire about utilizing myChart and telehealth. Patients can also message their provider, request prescription refills, view test results, schedule appointments and e-check-in for an upcoming visit via myChart. One of the big reasons why SLWR is such a strong health care facility is because of the generosity of the community. The hospital was built on and continues to constantly improve because of the ongoing investments from donors. State-of-theart technology, like Abbott testing technology, ultrasound, CT, MRI (including for breast issues), 3D mammography and other services for infusion or pediatric needs is all made possible because of local people who care and want to help. The generosity and support continued throughout the COVID-19 crisis. Our community reached out to feed the frontline workers, and to donate in-kind gifts like clothing, tickets to future shows, PPE, hand sanitizer as well as offering monetary support. One of the most inspiring moments happened each night at 8 p.m. during Blaine County’s nearly two-month quarantine. Locals throughout the Wood River Valley would go outside and “Howl for Health Care Workers.” This idea and moment of gratitude eventually spread to other communities throughout the country. Just as our community always does, we came together to take care of one another in our time of need, even if it meant staying at home or staying 6 feet apart. That’s why the new saying about St. Luke’s and the Wood River Valley itself is: Heroes work and live here.

Just as our community always does, we came together to take care of one another in our time of need, even if it meant staying at home or staying 6 feet apart.

Air St. Luke’s is used in case someone needs to be transported via ground, rotor or fixed wing to a larger or specialized health care system outside of our rural community. It is the region’s most comprehensive medical transport program, operating as mobile critical care units with advanced lifesaving equipment and technology. As a Critical Access Hospital with a level IV trauma designation, St. Luke Wood River Medical Center can stabilize and transport those needing complex or specialized care. Starting at just $60/year (or $1000 for a lifetime membership) any family can sign up for the service and have peace of mind. For more information on membership, please go to stlukesonline.org.

O

ne of the biggest reasons why so many of us choose to live in or love to visit the Wood River Valley is because of our backyard. While we certainly love the culture and sense of community the four small towns of our valley offer, it’s what’s just beyond town that really connects us all. The beauty of our part of the Northern Rockies and the playground it is home to are tough to top. Whether you like hiking, skiing or mountain biking, fishing, photography, plein air painting or simply witnessing the wonders of nature with your kids or grandkids, the Wood River Valley is a magical place. That’s because it’s easy to enjoy all these things and much more simply by heading out into our backyard. To help you make the most out of all the Wood River Valley has to offer, here’s a rundown of some of our favorite backyard adventures.

PHOTO COURTESY OF VISIT IDAHO: HIKING, CRATERS OF THE MOON

HIKING Short Drives

Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve offers up some of the most unique terrain in the country, making it a popular spot for day hikes. Located just over an hour’s drive southeast of the Wood River Valley, Craters of the Moon is an island of lava flows and cinder cones sprawled out in the midst of the “Sagebrush Sea,” as they call the high desert of southern Idaho. Formed during volcanic eruptions over 15,000 years ago, the monument was signed into order by President Calvin Coolidge in 1923. In 1969, Apollo 14 astronauts came to train for their moonwalk by hiking around Craters. Craters of the Moon offers eight hikes from short strolls to an 8-mile trek. It also offers a unique snowshoeing option in the winter. The Monument is open all year and its Visitors Center is open daily.

Short Drives

Sawtooth Valley The Sawtooth Valley is considered to be one of the most beautiful mountain valleys on the planet. “Just over the hill,” as most locals say, from the Wood River Valley, the Sawtooth Valley is another short drive that is full of hiking, fishing, mountain biking and water-related fun. After crossing Galena Summit—and stopping to take a photo at the Scenic Overlook—the Sawtooth Valley is sprinkled with a series of high mountain lakes. Redfish Lake is the most famous of the drive-to lakes and is named after the once prolific salmon that return some 900 miles from the sea to spawn each year. The Sawtooth Fish Hatchery, located right along Scenic Highway 75, is a great place to see salmon and steelhead. Endless hiking options can be found along both sides of the highway, especially if you head into the Sawtooth Mountains.

For more information about Craters of the Moon, go to the National Parks Service page at www.nps.gov/crmo or call (208) 527-1300.

HIKING Places to Stay

Stanley The quaint and rustic town of Stanley is busiest in the summer, when it becomes the hub for bikers, hikers and rafters. The greater Stanley area is home to more than a dozen hotels, lodges and rental options as well as countless camping choices. Stanley is also home to more than a dozen restaurants and bars, although most of them are only open during the warm-weather months. For more information about dining or lodging, please contact the Stanley Chamber of Commerce at www.StanleyCC.org or call 208.774.3411

Out the Backdoor If you love to hike, well then here are endless hiking options leading from every community in the Wood River Valley. From short, dog and family-friendly strolls like the Howard Preserve in Bellevue or the Sellgren Trail in Ketchum to long jaunts into the mountains like Quigley Canyon in Hailey or Trail Creek just beyond Sun Valley. Easy: The Hailey Greenway runs along the Big Wood River and is a perfect place for youngsters to take a hike. One of the most popular places to walk dogs or hit the river for some fishing, the Greenway runs from the Wood River Land Trust’s Draper Wood River Preserve just off Bullion Street in Hailey, down through the Colorado Gulch Preserve off Broadford Road. Variable: Adams Gulch may be the most popular hiking (and dog walking) spot in the Wood River Valley. Nestled in the tree-covered hills just north of town, Adams Gulch offers a variety of hiking options, with all kinds of loops for any energy level. If you don’t mind crossing paths with people and pets, this is the perfect hiking spot for you.

Challenging: Bald Mountain Trail covers what is best known during the winter as the Sun Valley Ski Area. With stunning views of the surrounding mountains and access options that include a gondola ride, the Bald Mountain Trail is a must for any hiking fan. It isn’t an easy hike, however, as the trail covers 3,200 vertical feet in five miles. That’s why some folks ride the gondola up and then hike back down. THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2019

MTN. BIKING Sun Valley may have been founded on skiing, but it’s becoming known as a mountain biking mecca. The entire area is full of good dirt, a great variety of terrain and over 400 miles of single track to explore. There are also plenty of fun and unique rides just a short drive away at places like Fisher Creek, but if you love to ride there’s really no reason to leave the backyard. Bald Mountain Once the snow melts, Bald Mountain opens for the mountain biking business— and business couldn’t be better. Lift access riding on Baldy is about as much fun as you can have on two wheels. From the new flow trails to miles of downhill track, riding Sun Valley is tough to top. Adams Gulch Adams Gulch just outside Ketchum and Carbonate Mountain just across the river from Hailey are two of the most popular places to ride, but there are great trails and plenty of old dirt roads into the mountains to explore throughout the Valley. Fatbike Phenomenon There used to come a time each fall when we’d all put our bikes away for the season and grab our skis. But now we just swap out our road or mountain bikes for a fatbike. With tires twice as big as a normal mountain bikes, fatbikes are good on snowy and slushy conditions. Fatbikes have actually been around for well over a decade, but they’ve really begun to take off in popularity over the last few years. With the Wood River Trail offering 20 miles of groomed paths perfect for fatbiking, going for bike ride during the winter no longer sounds like a nutty idea. Pump Tracks Ketchum Bike Park (700 2nd Ave.): A great pump park, grassy rest areas, shade tree and shrub plantings, and bench and bleacher seating. Hailey Pump Track (Quigley Canyon): Made of dirt, clay rollers and berms, a pump track offers a great way for kids of all ages to get active, get a core workout and develop great off-road biking skills. 32

GRINDING What is Gravel Grinding?

Just Right Off-Road Adventure More off-road adventure than a pavement ride, gravel grind riding is a unique mix of on and off-road riding, sometimes with some single track that allows you to cover miles and see incredible off-road Idaho areas. Underground races and organized events, such as Rebecca’s Private Idaho, have cemented the concept of gravel-grind riding to all who love bike adventures. Today, purpose-built gravel bikes are sturdy, but designed for off-pavement use, with good tires, a slightly more upright position, longer wheel base and disk brakes. Gravel grinder bikes bring the best of both worlds – from smooth single track to epic road rides – into the same outing Pick up the full Travels on Gravel map with all 12 rides in Hailey & South Idahoat the Hailey Welcome Center or download at haileyidaho.com/gravel

Our Favorite Travels on Gravel

10 - Easy - Quigley Loop Trail/Rd. 4.2 miles. 642’ elevation gain. About 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. A perfect beginner or quick gravel ride, especially good for young children. Start at the trailhead on Quigley Road, just past the end of the pavement. Ride out on the single-track trail to the pond and loop back on the other side of Quigley Canyon until the trail crosses the field and returns to the trailhead on Quigley Road. Or ride the road out to the pond and return on the trail; it’s easier descending on the trail. 1B - Med - Classic Rock Creek to Poverty Flats Loop 35 miles. 1,500’ elevation gain. Expect 2-1/2 to 3/1/2 hours. This ride is a classic tour of the west Hailey gravel. It is best ridden counter-clockwise and ride in reverse of some of the same roads in the TGR described above. Start in Hailey and head west on Croy Creek Road. At about 5 miles, turn left on View Road/ Rock Creek Road (at Rock Creek Ranch sign). At approximately 10 miles, there will

be a left turn on to Poverty Flats Road. This turn is easy to miss, but marked by a couple of galvanized storage tanks. Continue on Poverty Flat Road on rolling terrain followed by a 2.3-mile climb and fast descent to Glendale Road. Continue on Glendale Road, crossing Highway 75. Take a right turn just before Bellevue Farms Subdivision and follow around to the south and then connect with Gannett Road. Head back to Hailey via the bike path starting in Bellevue or alternately on Broadford Road. 7 - Difficult - Muldoon Canyon A “big” ride with lots of vertical. 16 miles. 1,500’ elevation gain. About 2-3 hours. This out-and-back ride on a gravel road is only lightly traveled but rough in places. It follows Seamans Gulch in a narrow shady canyon until it starts the climb to Muldoon Summit. Start from Bellevue on Muldoon Road and pass turnoffs to Martin Canyon on the left, and to Sharps Canyon on the right (see separate rides for those) until you start climbing in an open basin. At the summit you can stop and enjoy views of the Pioneer mountains before descending.

The Big Wood offers ample access throughout most of its 60-mile run to Magic Reservoir. Early spring is the only time the river is completely closed to fishing. Meanwhile, the other three seasons on the Big Wood make for some pretty idyllic alpine fishing. The freestone river is full of trout and gorgeous views that make you feel a lot farther away from civilization than you are.

FISHING Short Drives

Fly Fishing Highway Fishing is a big part of the appeal of our little neck of the Northern Rockies. Part of the “Fly Fishing Highway,” as they call Highway 20, even rolls right through the southern section of Blaine County. The two-lane highway is a short drive from Hailey or Ketchum and passes the legendary waters of Silver Creek. Silver Creek Preserve When The Nature Conservancy first preserved Silver Creek back in 1976, it became a watershed moment in spring creek and fisheries conservation. It was really the first conservation project of its kind anywhere, and its success has inspired numerous such projects around the world. That’s one of the reasons why fishing the gin-clear waters of Silver Creek is such a special event in any angler’s life—even when you’re as lucky as us locals are to fish it all the time. There’s never a bad day on Silver Creek, because even though the fishing isn’t easy, it’s always a rewarding experience.

36

Magic Reservoir It’s tough not to like a place called Magic Reservoir. The largest manmade lake in the area has several access points and is popular for bait, lure and fly fishing during the warmer months and ice fishing in the winter. Fed by the Big Wood River, when Magic Reservoir is full it covers nearly 4,000 acres and five miles of high-desert terrain. Besides fishing, Magic is a popular spot for waterskiers and stand-up paddleboarding. While trout—and big ones at that—are caught with regularity at both Silver Creek and Magic Reservoir, Magic is also one of the best places around to catch bass.

Places to Stay

SILVER CREEK HOTEL The Silver Creek Hotel in Bellevue is the closest lodging. Other quality nearby options include the AmericInn, Airport Inn or The Inn at Ellsworth Estate bed and breakfast in Hailey. The Limelight Hotel in Ketchum is pet friendly and there is a variety of options at the Sun Valley Resort. Every hotel mentioned offers pools and/or hot tubs. There is also a variety of camping options by Silver Creek, including in Picabo and at the Hayspur Fish Hatchery and Point of Rocks recreation area.

Making its way from the snowy mountains above Sun Valley, Trail Creek offers some pretty sweet small-stream fishing. The chilly waters of the creek get stocked often during the height of the fishing season. Trail Creek also passes by the Hemingway Memorial, adding another attraction to spending some time exploring the small mountain stream.

FISHING GEAR Two of the best in the fishing business, Silver Creek Outfitters and Lost River Outfitters, can be found on Main Street in Ketchum. They both offer full-service tackle shops and knowledgeable staffs. They also offer a variety of guided fishing experiences, from full to half days, for one person or for the whole family. SKIING

SV NORDIC FESTIVAL, COURTESY OF VISIT SUN VALLEY

Sun Valley is not only home to America’s first destination ski resort, we’re also home to the first ski lift. You can even see its remnants at Proctor Mountain, just east of the resort. We’re awfully proud of our skiing history around here, and for good reason. From Sun Valley’s celebrity-filled start in 1936 to officially being named “Nordic Town USA” a few years ago, skiing is part of the foundation of our community. One of the biggest reasons skiing is so big around here is that we offer something for everyone. Maybe you like Black Diamond bump runs or carving endless slalom turns on Baldy. Perhaps playing in the terrain parks or learning to ski or board on Dollar is more you’re style. Maybe you like to Nordic or crosscountry ski on our more than 100 miles of regular groomed trails. Or maybe you love to earn your turns and hit the backcountry and make laps along Galena Summit. Even if a simple snowshoe followed by a cup of hot cocoa is you’re style, we’ve got you covered there, too. Baldy Baldy, also referred to as the Sun Valley Ski Resort, offers 100 runs and 3,400 vertical feet of alpine skiing. Baldy is well known for its consistent snow (averaging nearly 20 feet each season) and groomed runs, which are some of the best in the world thanks to the nation’s finest snowmaking system. Dollar Mountain Dollar Mountain is located on the other side of Ketchum from Baldy. Offering 22 runs and nearly 1,000 feet of vertical, Dollar is home to a variety of terrain parks that get changed

(208) 726-SKIS (7547) throughout the season. It also offers a Magic Carpet and plenty of runs for those new to skiing. Rotarun Rotarun is the “little mountain with the big heart” in Hailey. Skiing and riding is available on weekends at the 475-foot-high ski hill. The ticket price to ride the J-bar is a simple donation to the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, which runs Rotarun and offers learn-to-ski programs there for elementary school kids. Sun Valley Heli-Ski Most people don’t realize that Sun Valley Heli-Ski was issued the first U.S. Forest Service heli-ski permit in 1966 and is still lucky enough to lay claim to the largest permit in the lower 48 states. Their skiable terrain includes three ranges (Smoky, Boulder and Pioneer mountains) and covers more than 750,000 acres. Nordic Trails Nordic skiing in the Wood River Valley is as good as it gets. From Quigley Canyon in Hailey, following the groomed Wood River Trail (which also serves as the bike path) over to Sun Valley Resort’s Nordic Center and then up through the Sawtooth National Recreational Area to Galena Lodge, you can find some of the best cross-country and skate skiing in America. Epic Pass Sun Valley Resort has partnered up with the Epic Pass for the 2020/21 season. Epic Pass holders choose from a variety options that include unlimited skiing and reduced lift ticket options at over 65 resorts worldwide.

BLAINE COUNTY SCHOOLS GO BEYOND EXPECTATIONS BY HEATHER CROCKER PHOTOS COURTESY BLAINE COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT BCSD Communications Director

magine a class for kindergartners that begins with harmony time and ends with songs in Spanish. Imagine a day spent ice fishing, skiing, and learning avalanche awareness, or an overnight camping trip where students learn rafting or rock climbing. Imagine receiving instruction from a group of worldclass musicians and then performing onstage with those musicians later that night. This is what public education looks like in Blaine County. Our local public schools go beyond expectations to provide unparalleled opportunities for every student. If school is a place where dreams are made into reality, then Blaine County delivers. Take students like Enrique Dolores, a 2018 Wood River High School graduate who started kindergarten with Spanish as his first language and now attends Bates College in Maine. Or students like Luke Dean, currently a senior at Wood River High School, who was involved in a two-year-long project creating a remotecontrol van that would crash into a telephone pole to gauge the impact in the ultimate “Myth-Busters” learning scenario. Dean then went on to compete against other students from around the globe in the 2018 VEX Robotics World Championship. Families who are new to the area take notice. Monica Miller lives in Hailey with her husband and three elementary- and

middle-school-age children. “When my husband and I moved our family here three years ago, I was impressed with the schools, the education level of the teachers, and the opportunities available to students—even in elementary,” said Miller. “Not only is there a strong focus on academics, art, technology and engineering, but experiences like Ski Week, Swim Week, field trips, and more.” Blaine County School District (BCSD) serves approximately 3,400 students at its eight schools, which include a STEAM school serving grades K–8, a dual-immersion magnet school serving grades K–5, a comprehensive middle school and high school, two neighborhood elementary schools, an alternative high school, and a rural K–12 school. With its mission of inspiring, engaging, educating and empowering every student, BCSD is known for its award-winning arts programs, preschool and all-day kindergarten classes, advanced opportunities, diverse student body, dual-immersion language program and low student/teacher ratios. The district’s salary scale, professional development, and vast opportunities attract some of the best teachers in the country. “I am very grateful to the teachers who helped my children transition successfully and personally invest time, attention and talent to see them thrive academically,” continued Miller.

Our local public schools go beyond expectations to provide unparalleled opportunities for every student. If school is a place where dreams are made into reality, then Blaine County delivers. Class sizes in BCSD schools also go beyond expectations. “The Hailey community is passionate about education, and there is nothing small about it except maybe the classroom sizes," Miller said. A class size of 18 is the goal for grades K–2, and a class size of 23 for grades 3–5. Middle and high school class sizes are usually under 25. Students will experience both larger and smaller classes depending on the demand but, overall, the small class sizes are something that parents and community members value the most about Blaine County schools. BCSD encourages innovation and a whole-child approach to education. Five years ago, parents in Ketchum began talking about the possibility of a new learning approach for Hemingway Elementary School. After conducting research and focus groups involving parents, staff and community members, the school received board approval to launch the area’s first STEAM school, where science, technology, engineering, art and math are intentionally integrated into all lessons across the curriculum. “We have a school where learning is guided by real-world problemsolving,” said Hemingway STEAM School Principal Tish Short. Hemingway students often work collaboratively across grade levels to explore concepts in math, science, language arts, and social studies that connect across subjects. For instance, a fall hike to Baker Lake gives students a chance to become scientists by making weather observations, measuring and examining trees, and then writing about their experience afterward. Recently, BCSD adopted a Social-Emotional Learning curriculum that promotes student health and well-being. “We recognize that a physically and emotionally healthy, nutritionally astute, and physically active child is more likely to be academically successful,” said Director of Teaching and Learning, Angie Martinez. Teachers across the district integrate social-emotional skills throughout the school day. This might look like a structured lesson where students learn to recognize emotions in early 42

elementary grades, or a stream-of-consciousness writing project followed by a small group discussion in high school. From beginning to end, the goal is to equip all students with the skills they need to flourish—both in school and outside of school. What’s the end result? Public education in Blaine County goes beyond expectations. All students are given opportunities to be inspired, engaged, educated, and empowered in Blaine County Schools. Tours of the schools are available anytime by calling the school secretary, and more information about each school can be found at www.blaineschools.org.

INSPIRING STUDENTS BY DANNI DEAN

W

hen moving to a new community, many people place a high value on quality educational opportunities and school choice. Beyond the Wood River Valley’s strong public schools, there are a variety of other educational environments from which families can choose. Since its inception in 1973, Sun Valley Community School has inspired students to think critically, embrace challenges, and lead impactful, purposeful lives. The school serves more than 400 students in grades PreK–12. Close student-faculty relationships, a renowned outdoor program, and project-centered learning define the school's distinctive educational experience. The school’s thriving residential program, founded in 2011, attracts students from across the country and around the world. Sun Valley Community School’s founder, Sam Hazard, and all of the school’s stewards since have believed that school should be a place where you get to pursue your passions. It should also be a place where you learn to meet challenges and push beyond your comfort zones. Most of all, school should open your eyes to new worlds and new possibilities. One of the tenets of a Sun Valley Community School education is that “not all classrooms have walls,” and the Community School experience is one that stretches far beyond the walls of the classroom. As one of the leading PreK–12 grade schools in the West, Sun Valley Community School has long encouraged students to find their balance. The Sage School in Hailey is an independent day school for grades 6–12 that honors adolescence and strives to create a dynamic learning environment through a curriculum centered on human ecology and engaging experiences that promote selfawareness, community responsibility and a sense of place. Honoring the more than 110-year tradition of Montessori education, Pioneer Montessori School serves children 18 months to 12 years old in multi-age classrooms that reflect the emotional, academic, and social needs of children throughout their devel-

opment. Pioneer’s small, urban campus in Ketchum provides a unique school experience. Hailey’s Syringa Mountain School is Idaho’s first public elementary school guided by the core principles of Waldorf ™ education. The K–6 charter school offers a full music program, Spanish instruction, and garden education. At Bellevue’s Waldorf-inspired Trinity School, students in grades 4–7 receive an independent education that incorporates music, handwork, and nature-based learning in a mixed-age classroom. For the youngest students of all, the Wood River Valley offers an abundance of high-quality private preschool programs, each with its own strengths and areas of focus. he SUN Airport Art Committee (SAAC) took flight in 2015 when the passenger terminal was remodeled. The exhibits quickly became a community highlight in support of local talent. Every six months (spring and fall) the committee extends a call to artists that are influenced by the Wood River Valley and our expansive playground. Since inception the walls of Friedman Memorial Airport (FMA) have shown the work of hundreds of talented artists ranging from small local artists to wildly celebrated gallery works. Designed to celebrate the region’s visual arts community, the exhibits welcome travelers to our area with a peek into the window of our culture. “The exhibits are a true community effort and a wonderful model of support and collaboration,” says Anne Jeffery of the Bellevue Artist Alliance. "For artists just getting into exhibiting, they gain the experience of going through an online juried process, which the first time you do it can be quite a challenge. Hopefully this gives them the know-how and confidence to go after other opportunities.” The exhibits are juried by members of the Bellevue Artists Alliance, the Hailey and Ketchum Arts Committees and FMA board and staff.

“I am deeply impressed by the abundance of talented artists in our valley,” said Airport Manager Chris Pomeroy. “The Airport Board and staff are extremely proud to feature such wonderful and diverse works of art in the airport, allowing locals and our visitors a chance to reflect on the Wood River Valley in a different way.” LEARN MORE ABOUT SUN AIRPORT ART COMMITTEE iflysun.com/saac

When visitors arrive, they are warmly welcomed by depictions of our area and what we value as a community. For travelers, airports can be stressful places and strolling through world-class art can have a calming effect and is a great way to learn more about the culture of our community. The Native American piece (shown on page 47) inspired artist Kimberly McBride while living out at the end of Indian Creek Road. Kimberly, known for using only her fingers to paint instantly recognizable depictions of famous figures, was captivated by the history of the area. “I was obsessed while living out there. There was an energy that had ahold of me,” she says. For her, having art at the airport offers a whole new audience. Kimberly notes that it’s two-fold—not only are you presenting your work to folks that probably wouldn’t see your art any other way, but you also introduce the arts to a group of people that may be too intimidated to walk into a gallery or studio. For many artists, new doors can open and sales are made. Many of the artists that exhibit are not necessarily affiliated with galleries, and this opportunity enables them to show work in a beautiful public setting where people from every walk of life pass by. “It’s a little airport but it’s unique because there are a lot of people coming and going from all over the world. It’s really exciting to be a part of it,” says Kimberly. Each rotation is followed by an artists' reception, hosted by FMA, where the community is welcome and has an opportunity to meet each artist.

Our outdoor spaces provide us with opportunities to roam, adventure, learn, and rejuvenate. But the infrastructure that provides access to many of these places may be tested. Be cognizant of the high usage areas, stay patient, and remember to share. If you’re in the know, go to the less frequented spots. Knowledge is power and being informed will help us all navigate these uncharted waters as best we can. Know how to keep yourself safe, accept what best practices businesses might ask from you, and remember that we are all here because we love this place and we want to share it. Rise to the occasion and commit to patience, kindness, understanding, and knowledge as we venture out to write a new normal way of living in the mountains.

Michael Sinnott and Killarney Loufek had been to a lot of weddings by the time they got engaged. A rather unique couple themselves, it seemed only fitting that they wanted to do something different. They didn't want to do a wedding that they had been to before. That’s why they decided to tie the knot in the middle of the winter at a little mom-and-pop ski hill just west of Hailey.

"I always thought it would be fun to get married in the snow," said Killarney. "That's when we realized we had been doing our wedding venue search all wrong. We switched to a winter wedding right then, and the ideas started rolling about how to have a fun, unique winter wedding." “I always dreamed of getting married in the snow,” Killarney said. “But our wedding at Rotarun was even more amazing than I thought it could be. It was super fun.” THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2020

Killarney grew up on the beaches of Southern California, while Mikey grew up here on the ski trails of Sun Valley. They are both accomplished athletes, earning national championships and All-American honors in their individual sports; Killarney in sailing and Mikey in Nordic skiing. They met through athletic social circles while attending Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. But they didn’t really strike up an amorous connection until after graduation, when they met for lunch one day in San Francisco. Unlike their great timing as athletes, their timing as a couple wasn’t so smooth. Killarney was about to move to Mexico, while Mikey was headed for China. They didn’t let the distance stop them. Their first date was on the Mayan Riviera, followed by dates in Costa Rica and China. They also didn’t did let the challenges of throwing a winter wedding in the Northern Rockies hold them back from having the perfect day. Festivities began with a welcome dinner at Warfield Distillery & Brewery in Ketchum. They put together an incredible three-cheese fondue, a Sun Valley staple. Mikey said, “They crushed it.” The wedding began shortly after at Rotarun—the only free ski area in the country. The transformation from ski resort to wedding site in the middle of February was nothing shy of

remarkable. Tara Bella Flowers came in to beautify the surroundings and “did an amazing job. I had no idea Rotarun could be that beauriful,” Killarney said. A La Parilla's taco cart, mulled wine and ski rentals from PK’s Sports set the scene, and the dress code of retro ski wear set the mood. The family-friendly, single-poma-lift ski area was perfect for skiers of all abilities. Even Killarney’s friends from Mexico who had never skied before enjoyed it. As Adelaide Mason’s terrific photos show, a great time was had by all. After carving turns for hours, the celebration moved over to The Mint on Main Street in Hailey. Dinner, including The Pioneer Saloon’s famous Mud Pie, and dancing took over. “The Mint did a fantastic job. It was the perfect blend of amazing food and great acoustics," the couple said. Soon after their wedding, the coronavirus pandemic took over and they spent their first few months as a married couple in quarantine in Ketchum, where they happily now call home. While that’s not the ideal way to start a marriage, their wedding was certainly a magical day. "We feel fortunate to have had a chance to celebrate with our family and friends, given the coronavirus timing," Mikey said. “I think we may have been the last wedding in Idaho for a while.” THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2020

FINDING STRENGTH WITH SWIFTSURE BY ANN HARRISON PHOTOS COURTESY OF SWIFTSURE RANCH

W

ood River Valley is home to a large number of nonprofit organizations but few reach as far as the Swiftsure Ranch Therapeutic Equestrian Center. Since the early 90s Swiftsure has been showing off one of the best traits of our valley—connection. Located just south of Bellevue, their mission is to empower individuals of all abilities to gain strength and freedom through therapeutic equine connections. Over 300 participants of all ages and abilities pass through the gates each year, welcomed every day by the herd of 20 horses that call Swiftsure Ranch home. In 30 years of operation, their programming has expanded to service diagnoses that didn’t even exist when they began. Through collaborations with entities like Higher Ground, The Senior Connection, Idaho School for the Deaf and Blind and Camp Rainbow Gold, Swiftsure’s activities and therapies reach far beyond the 191acre ranch. The day-to-day life of families with members of different abilities is challenging physically, emotionally and financially. Swiftsure’s annual budget of approximately $700,000, funded through the generosity of our small community, allows the programs to be free to all participants whether it’s through a direct referral or part of its many collaborations. This is pretty unique—there are few programs anywhere in the country that can offer such profound transformations at no cost. Experiences at Swiftsure are genuinely magical and range from making social connections for the first time with a horse, building core strength and feeling the freedom of movement, to completely transforming an entire family. THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2020

67

For participants and volunteers, Swiftsure is a social, positive and vibrant place they may never have known they needed, but can’t wait to return. It’s a place where they can be released from the constraints of their diagnosis.

“A freak skiing accident and spinal cord injury took me from an active, able-bodied life to one bound to a wheelchair with almost no functional mobility. It felt as if my identity and all the things that brought me joy in life were gone. Swiftsure was the first place that began to change how I felt about that. To participate in something so fulfilling to so many people is extraordinary. It feeds your soul.” -Teresa Hakuri The physical benefits are easy to measure: participants that have never walked are able to feel the freedom of movement astride a horse, build strength and enjoy a stroll along the 5 miles of trails. The social connections are also apparent as friendships are built between the horses and participants. And while the cognitive elements show as students are learning, the emotional piece is harder to define. Yet, as many participants have expressed, it has a profound impact. Participants find strength, freedom and connection each time a lesson or camp takes place, thanks to the dedication of the staff, volunteers and thousand-pound therapists—the herd of specially trained therapy horses.

Unlike most organizations, when the sun goes down and the lights are turned off, the ranch is still breathing. Each element of the facility feeds the work they do and without proper care, they cannot provide their services. Just like any ranch, whether they are in full operation or not, fences need mending and horses need tending. To take a virtual ride with Henry, a lovable member of the Swiftsure herd, and see what's involved in caring for the 190 acre ranch, read the 2019 Annual Report. 68

HAPPY & AFTER HOURS MICHAEL FRANTI AT RIVER RUN LODGE

PLAY HARD PARTY EVEN HARDER There’s a lot to do once the sun goes down in Sun Valley! BY MIKE MCKENNA PHOTO CAROL WALLER

Y

ou might think that since our days in the Wood River Valley are so full of fun and adventure that we wouldn’t have any energy left over once the sun goes down. But that’s far from the truth. Heck, ever since opening night of the Sun Valley Resort back in 1936, our area has been known for partying just about as hard as we play. To help you celebrate another epic day in the Wood River Valley, here are some of our nightlife highlights. The Duchin Lounge in the Sun Valley Lodge was remodeled in 2015 and is a classic and classy place to have a cocktail and listen to live jazz music throughout the year. You can even whet your appetite with a few games at the 1950s-style Sun Valley Bowling Alley in the basement of the Lodge. In the 1880s, Ketchum had a population of only 2,000, but boasted over a dozen bars. That percentage has changed much since. Besides a wide variety of places to grab a drink, Whiskey Jacques' is the spot to see live music, with national headlining bands playing the small stage throughout the year. The Limelight Hotel also offers more mellow music in a relaxed and family-

72

DISCOVER HAILEY & THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2020

friendly scene. In the summer, Ketch'em Alive (shown below) at Forest Service Park is the place to be on Tuesday nights. Hailey was once thought of as Ketchum and Sun Valley’s sleepy little bedroom community, but those days are long past. The Mint brings great live music to town throughout the year, while The Red Shoe just across Main Street offers music and DJs in a more rustic setting. The Sun Valley Brewery also offers a terrific lineup of live music all year-long, while the Sawtooth Brewery opens up its bay door for bands to play during the warmer months. The free weekly concerts at Wicked Wednesdays make The Wicked Spud the hot spot during the summer. Bellevue may be the second smallest city in Blaine County, but certainly isn’t the quietest. Live music can be found at the Silver Dollar Saloon during most weekend nights throughout the year. Meanwhile, Mahoney’s Bar & Grill across the street is not only a favorite spot for locals to grab a bite or a drink, it’s also the place to be on Thursday nights during the summer for their free Summer Music Concert Series on their back patio.

The Sun Valley Inn was remodeled in 2019, while the Sun Valley Lodge also underwent a major remodel in 2015. The two hotels now bookend the Austrian-inspired Sun Valley Village. Thanks to these efforts, Sun Valley now offers all the modern luxuries you might want, while still maintaining its historic charm as the first mountain destination resort in America. The Limelight Hotel has brought modern vibes and lots of great energy to downtown Ketchum. It even stays true to our petloving mountain town roots and is dog friendly. and comfy traditional hotel rooms in the heart of Ketchum. The European chalet-style Knob Hill Inn is the most romantic place to stay. If you’re looking for a different type of vacation rental, like a house or condo, Alpine Lodging Sun Valley, Mountain Lifestyles Property Services, Inc. and Sun Valley Resort have some great options. The AmercInn by Wyndham in Hailey was named the “Best AmercInn” in the country this year, thanks in large part to its friendly staff. The Wood River Inn & Suites on Main Street offers comfortable rooms within short walking distance to downtown Hailey. The Airport Inn on the south side of town has recently remodeled and expanded, while The Inn at Ellsworth Estate is home to our valley’s best bed and breakfast. The new Silver Creek Hotel in Bellevue has helped add vibrancy to the small town, while the Champagne Creek Yurts near Craters of the Moon National Monument is ideal for folks looking for some off-the-beaten-path lodging.

REAL ESTATE YOUR DREAM HOME IS EASY TO FIND IN THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY.

Local real estate

Overall, given the circumstances, it looks like real estate in the area is rebounding, and while we know there may be continuing effects of COVID-19 in the Wood River Valley over the next year, we are hopeful that the real estate market will continue to do fairly well due to the desire of folks to live and enjoy all that the Wood River Valley has to offer.

STILL A GOOD INVESTMENT

What does the immediate and long-term future for our local markets look like?

Q & A WITH SV BOARD OF REALTORS PRESIDENT REID SANBORN

How has Sun Valley and the Wood River Valley weathered the storm of the coronavirus pandemic? While we cannot speak for every individual and every business in the Sun Valley and Wood River Valley area, we, as the rest of the nation, were obviously hit hard at the beginning of the pandemic. We are confident in our community. Many local industries are working together to help elevate the message that the Wood River Valley has taken the necessary precautions to make the area safe and enjoyable, and it is great to see all the businesses in the area come together to help. What is the current state of real estate locally?

Why is Sun Valley and the entire Wood River Valley a great place to invest in real estate as a first or second home?

BY THE NUMBERS

Certainly real estate, both locally and nationally, took a hit this spring in reaction to the COVID-19 pandemic. While we saw a slowdown in the real estate sector, things seem to be bouncing back relatively quickly, and we are optimistic that things will be closer to normal than we originally guessed. If we look just at May, while closings were down considerably, as closings are generally reflective of the homes that went under contract the few months prior, our inventory of listings is only down 14% year over year and we are only down 12% year over year for homes being put under contract in May.

COURTESY OF THE SUN VALLEY BOARD OF REALTORS® MLS

We do not to expect to see a drastic decrease year over year. May’s uptick in homes under contract seem to point towards a healthy recovery after the first few months of the pandemic and shutdown. Long-term, I believe we will continue to see a healthy market, with sales in Q2 below original expectations for 2020, but quickly climbing to match expectations for Q3, Q4, and on into 2021. Even before COVID-19, the valley was experiencing similar inventory shortages that the real estate market was seeing nationwide, but we’ve actually seen quite a few new listings come on the market and go under contract in the past month, so we are optimistic that people are feeling confident in the marketplace. Additionally, it will be interesting to see how the shift to a greater work-from-home workforce will affect the valley. We would not be surprised if we get an increase in homebuyers looking to relocate out of major cities in order to enjoy the many perks of living in the Wood River Valley while working remotely.

Sun Valley and the wider Wood River Valley, as so many of us know, is a great place to live! Now, more than ever, access to outdoor activities and recreation is so incredibly valuable, and we believe that interest in living in this area will only continue to grow. As more and more people are looking to escape the crowded city life, either on weekends or even full-time, I think the area will continue to attract those looking for a certain way of life that is hard to find outside of the Wood River Valley. 250

COMMERCIAL VIEW BY PAUL KENNY

The real estate market has been on an interesting ride in Blaine County since mid-March. In addition to our usual Spring slack season, the COVID invasion has had an additional impact. Thankfully, as of this writing, infection rates have virtually ceased in the valley, isolation orders have loosened, and businesses and activities are opening again. During this period, we have been diligently servicing our listings and clients, keeping on top of developments in the local and national economies, and preparing for a new normal. The Wood River Valley (WRV) market is different than the national economy, and even different than other resort markets. Here are some unique market factors worth considering.

The Great Pause. Large amounts of uncertainty percolating through the nation have caused some to hit pause on new home purchases, development projects, and commercial acquisitions. We have not seen price disruptions in the WRV. "Normal" deals are still happening, albeit at a patient rate. Some property owners and investors are cautiously standing by to see what happens as conditions improve.

2

Sun Valley has yet to be 'discovered'. Pricing, compared to other top-tier resort markets, is much lower in commercial and residential sales and leasing. The Valley has some of the best resort facilities, resort terrain, and backcountry access, and our "more-difficult-to-access" location makes us an attractive market to families/people fleeing crowded and expensive cities. We expect those who have the desire, means, and ability to work remotely in a real mountain town to continue migrating to the area—this is not a new trend (it's already been happening), and we expect it to accelerate.

3

Inflation-adjusted values have not surpassed pre-recession highs. Historical commercial and residential real estate sold data has yet to return to pre-recession (2007) highs—we view this as a very positive place from which to start, as demand continues to grow. The fundamentals of the local commercial and residential markets are solid; for example, other than new construction, many real estate sales are still below replacement value.

4

This is NOT 2008. The last recession was caused by loose lender underwriting, which ultimately resulted in a liquidity crisis. Additionally, the Fed and Congress were slow to act in 2008 to address the situation. This time the government has provided massive stimulus in a short period of time to stabilize markets and calm investors. This is more of a bottom-up stimulus than in 2008. The short term is uncertain. But the future holds opportunity. The long-term trends for the Wood River Valley are positive. Please give us a call if you have questions about the local market or would like additional information.
