SARAH BENSON, EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF HAILEY ICE, INC.
Community: In good times and in bad, community is the constant. Whether we lift each other up in times of need or rally around each other to celebrate our success, we always have each other’s back. Those of us who live in and visit the Wood River Valley are an integral part of the fabric of our community no matter where you come from or how long you have lived here.
The Wood River Valley is an incredibly special place, and as a community member, I am pleased to be part of The Chamber, which encompasses all things that make this place home. I feel privileged to work alongside a dedicated Board of Directors who all share a common goal of serving our community and visitors. Our Executive Director, Mike McKenna, is second to none and his vision for The Chamber has taken us to new heights. Mike continues to find new ways to connect and support our Wood River Valley communities, while also recognizing the importance of tourism to our region. Kelsey Watson, our Office Manager and Membership Director, has made an immediate impact after joining us last year, with her ability to connect and assist our members, while also assuming a very hands-on role with all our Chamber events. Kim Bryson, our Grant Manager and bookkeeper, works to assure that we are in good financial health, and takes on additional tasks whenever they come her way. We are so grateful for all our staff and volunteers that help us keep The Chamber running and ensure our events are a success!
The Chamber will continue to host a number of signature events such as our hometown Fourth of July parade and fireworks, the Thanksgiving Turkey Trot and the Chili Cook-off. We are also very excited to bring back our Hailey Chamber Awards this year, honoring some of our members who work tirelessly to support so many in our community. The Hailey Rocks Summer Music Series will be at Hop Porter Park this summer, so make sure to come to any one or all of the concerts. Of course, we will continue to manage the Welcome Center in Hailey, celebrate new businesses with ribbon cuttings, host Business After Hours events and Ketchum Coffee Talks. We will once again publish our award-winning Discover the Wood River Valley Guide. The Guide is distributed throughout Idaho as well as nationally and took top honors at the 2024 Eddie/Ozzie National Publishing Awards winning the category of Full Issue – City & Regional, Northwest.
We are a small, but mighty, enthusiastic team and welcome all of you to be part of our Chamber community and to let us show you all we have to offer. Please stop by the Welcome Center in Hailey as you embark on this great adventure into this place, we call home.
Sincerely,
Sarah Benson Board President

Numbers can help tell the story of a place. Here’s the nittygritty about Blaine County, Idaho, and the communities of the Wood River Valley, in particular.
L ocated about 65 miles north of Twin Falls, Blaine County covers 2,661 square miles and stretches from the Salmon River drainage in the north to the Snake River in the south. The 137-mile-long Big Wood River drains the central portion of the county. Approximately 80% of the county’s land area is protected federal and state land. There are 82 peaks above 10,000 feet, the tallest of which is Hyndman Peak (elev. 12,008’). Mountain ranges include the Pioneer, Boulder, White Cloud, Smoky, and Sawtooth Mountains. There are 62 lakes in the county, including two-mile-long Alturas Lake south of Stanley and numerous small alpine lakes.
Blaine County’s total population was 24,872 in 2021, an increase of nearly 20% over 2010. The population is 94.9% white and 21.7% Hispanic. Blaine County’s people are highly educated relative to the rest of the state and the nation, with more than 40% of residents having earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. 2021 per capita income in Blaine County ($40,739) was the highest of Idaho’s 44 counties, and the county’s median household income ($70,021) exceeded that of the state by 11% and the nation as a whole by 3%.
Blaine County: (2021 pop.: 24,872) is in south-central Idaho. The central and populous part of the county, the Wood River Valley, is part of the Big Wood River drainage. Idaho State Highway 75 runs north-south through the county, which includes the cities of Bellevue, Carey, Hailey, Ketchum, and Sun Valley. Many of those visiting the county stay in one of 6,426 seasonal housing units, which represent 30% of the total housing stock. Ketchum and Sun Valley lead the county in seasonal housing, with 38% and 68% seasonal housing, respectively. co.blaine.id.us • 206 1st Ave. S., Hailey, ID 83333
Bellevue: (2021 pop.: 2,568) is one of Blaine County’s smaller cities, located approximately 2 miles south of Hailey. Founded in 1882, Bellevue is the agricultural center of the county. bellevueidaho.us • 115 E. Pine St., • Bellevue, ID 83313 • (208) 7882128
Carey: (2021 pop.: 691) is the smallest city in Blaine County. Founded in 1883, Carey has a strong ranching heritage and is the home of the Blaine County Fairgrounds. The city sits in the agricultural eastern portion of the county at the intersection of U.S. Routes 20 and 26. cityofcarey.org 20482 N. Main St., • Carey, ID 83320 • (208) 823-4045
Hailey: (2021 pop.: 9,463) is the county seat of Blaine County and its largest city. Founded in 1882, it was one of three cities in the running for state capital when Idaho gained statehood in 1890 (Boise ultimately received the honor). Hailey is home to Friedman Memorial Airport, Wood River High School and Middle School, and the Blaine County campus of the College of Southern Idaho. haileycityhall.org 115 S. Main St., Ste. Ketchum: (2021 pop.: 3,588) is a major tourist destination and commercial center adjacent to Sun Valley. Situated 12 miles north of Hailey, Ketchum is home to Sun Valley Resort’s Warm Springs and River Run lodges as well as the private Sun Valley Community School, The Community Library, and the Wood River YMCA. In a nod to Ketchum’s mining history, the city was originally named “Leadville” when founded in 1888. ketchumidaho.org • 480 East Ave. N. • Ketchum, ID 83340 • (208) 726-3841
Sun Valley: (2021 pop.: 1,814) is the city made famous by Sun Valley Resort—the nation’s first destination ski resort. The resort’s primary ski areas are Bald Mountain (elev. 9,150’) and Dollar Mountain (elev. 6,638’). The city was incorporated in 1947, 11 years after the resort opened in 1936. sunvalleyidaho.gov • 81 Elkhorn Rd. • Sun Valley, ID 83353 • (208) 622-4438

We’re proud of the people and businesses that make up The Chamber of Hailey and the Wood River Valley and we love to share their news and events.
We market through our new website, our weekly e-Newsletters, popular Facebook page and our growing Instagram account. We celebrate our members through our nationally distributed Guide and our Chamber Corner columns in the Wood River Weekly. We help create and pay for print, radio, television and online advertisements. And we do lots of old-school, person-to-person marketing, too.
Each year we publish our award-winning Discover the Wood River Valley Guide. Designed to look and read like a lifestyle magazine, our annual Guide is produced locally and helps visitors and folks interested in moving here learn about all our area has to offer. The Guide stars our Chamber members and gets sent all over the country as well as read thousands of times online.
Joining The Chamber is a tax-deductible business expense. That’s why being part of The Chamber of Hailey and the Wood River Valley and taking advantage of all we have to offer is one of the best marketing deals your business or nonprofit will ever find.
One of the most rewarding things The Chamber does is to connect people. We help create relationships amongst fellow business and community members, especially at our two monthly events, Wake Up with The Chamber (on the second Tuesday morning) and our “BAHs” or Business After Hours (on the third Thursday evening). They are always free, open to the public and a fun way to make new connections, hear local news and catch up with familiar faces.
Every time you support The Chamber or our members you are making a direct and positive impact on our community. You help thousands of local employees—your family, friends and neighbors—who work at Chamber businesses and nonprofits. You support lots of Chamberbacked events that make life here better, from the 5B Father’s Day Bash to bringing back the Hailey Days of the Old West Rodeo, from the Fourth of July fireworks to Trailing of the Sheep. We also help thousands of visitors at the Welcome Center in Hailey and answer phone calls about everything from snow and flooding issues to the best places to camp, ski, hike, shop, eat, drink and be merry.
Most people don’t realize that The Chamber is a nonprofit with the simple goal of helping our businesses and community. We appreciate your support and having you be part of the solution.

WITH A BACKYARD LIKE OURS, IT’S EASY TO FALL IN LOVE WITH THIS PLACE
BY MIKE MCKENNA PHOTOS COURTESY OF IDAHO RIVER JOURNEYS
"L eave No Trace.” Those are the words we live by here in Idaho.
It’s a mantra born out of our love for rivers and our understanding that we need to take care of the things we care about. It means that we should “leave no trace” that we were ever there. Leave no trash or waste. Leave nothing but footprints that can be washed clean by the wind.
Idaho is home to over 3,100 miles of navigable river, the most in the country, earning it the official nickname of “The Whitewater State.” Many of these rivers are still as wild and free as they were when Lewis and Clark first explored the Northern Rockies a couple centuries ago.
These countless ripples, rapids and pools have stayed healthy and haven’t been hammered by the hands of time because true Idahoans have a deep passion for our rivers. The Gem State is also blessed to have many impassioned stewards of our waters and their banks.
The Middle Fork of the Salmon River is one of Idaho’s most legendary waters. Skip Volpert and the crew at Idaho River Journeys (IRJ) have been stewards of the world-famous waters of the Middle Fork since they first started guiding people down it in 1978.
Like many Idaho outfitters, IRJ is a family-owned, multi generational operation. Skip and his partner, Julia Hatch, are the hands-
on owners of IRJ. Skip was raised on rivers with his father, Bob, a legend in the rafting industry.
“I won the lottery being born into this industry,” Skip said. “The river has always been a part of my life.”
“It’s rare to have an experience where everyone in the family can have a good time, but that’s what makes rafting and the Salmon River so special.”
– Doug Fenn
While Skip has spent plenty of time on some famous rivers in California and Oregon, for him and countless others, nothing tops the Middle Fork. Skip explained why the weeklong rafting trip through the middle of the Frank Church - River of No Return Wilderness is so special.
“The Middle Fork offers so many different experiences and ways to enjoy the wilderness. It has everything you could ask for on a river trip,” he said. “The scenery is incredible. The fishing is phenomenal. The hiking trails, the waterfalls, the hot springs and the continuous whitewater, the ability to disconnect from regular life and connect to the river, it’s just an amazing experience. And sharing such cool experiences really creates bonds between families and friends, and as guides we really enjoy being part of and sharing in that.”
But it’s not just what happens on the water that makes a Middle Fork trip so special.
“The bar is high on the Middle Fork and I often joke that we’re a ‘floating wilderness restaurant,’” Skip said, alluding to the exceptional culinary scene the Middle Fork is famous for. IRJ’s menu includes lots of fresh, locally-sourced items. They even end their trips with fresh pies from another family-owned outfitter at the Sunbeam Café.
The Main Salmon River starts at the base of the Sawtooth
Mountains and has two popular rafting options. The Upper Main “Day Stretch” near Stanley is an ideal choice for those new to rafting or who don’t want to spend a week on the water. The Main’s multi-day stretch starts shortly after the Middle Fork joins in and ends near Riggins.
White Otter Outdoor Adventures offers popular guided trips on both stretches. Both options can be great for anyone interested in rafting. Doug Fenn and his family have owned and operated White Otter for nearly 20 years now as well as offering up tasty meals at their Sunbeam Café headquarters, not too far from Stanley.
“We can accommodate a wide variety of interests,” Doug said. “It’s rare to have an experience where everyone in the family can have a good time, but that’s what makes rafting and the Salmon River so special.”
White Otter specializes in customizing whitewater trips to their clients’ wishes. As Doug explained, “If you can come with a group of people that want to connect to the planet and enjoy the river we’ll help figure out how to make it happen.”
Whether you go for a few hours or for a week, spending time on Idaho rivers helps everyone understand why we care so much about them and why we believe it’s important to “Leave No Trace.”
“Being on a raft really connects you to the place, to nature and to the river,” Doug said, “and reminds you why it’s so important.”
Be sure to plan ahead. Most commercial trips on the Middle Fork must be booked at least a year in advance. To book a trip with Idaho River Journeys visit www.idahoriverjourneys.com or to book with White Otter Outdoor Adventures visit www.whiteotter.com

Fishing is a big part of the appeal of our little neck of the Northern Rockies. Part of the “Fly Fishing Highway,” as they call Highway 20, even rolls right through the southern section of Blaine County. The two-lane highway is a short drive from Hailey or Ketchum and passes the legendary waters of Silver Creek.
When The Nature Conservancy first preserved Silver Creek back in 1976, it became a watershed moment in spring creek and fisheries conservation. It was really the first conservation project of its kind anywhere, and its success has inspired numerous such projects around the world. That’s one of the reasons why fishing the gin-clear waters of Silver Creek is such a special event in any angler’s life—even when you’re as lucky as we locals are to fish it all the time. There’s never a bad day on Silver Creek, because even though the fishing isn’t easy, it’s always a rewarding experience.
It’s tough not to like a place called Magic Reservoir. The largest manmade lake in the area has several access points and is popular for bait, lure and fly fishing during the warmer months and ice fishing in the winter. Fed by the Big Wood River, when Magic Reservoir is full it covers nearly 4,000 acres and five miles of high-desert terrain. Besides fishing, Magic is a popular spot for waterskiers and stand-up paddleboarding.
While trout—and big ones at that—are caught with regularity at both Silver Creek and Magic Reservoir, Magic is also one of the best places around to catch bass.
Silver Creek Hotel in Bellevue is the closest lodging. Other quality nearby options include the Fairfield Inn, AmericInn, and Airport Inn. The Limelight Hotel in Ketchum is pet friendly and there is a variety of options at the Sun Valley Resort. Every hotel mentioned offers pools and/or hot tubs. There is also a variety of camping options by Silver Creek, including in Picabo and at the Hayspur Fish Hatchery and Point of Rocks recreation area.
The Big Wood River carves its way through the Valley it’s named for. That’s why no matter where you are in the Wood River Valley, you’re never far from the river.
The Big Wood offers ample access throughout most of its 60-mile run to Magic Reservoir. Early spring is the only time the river is completely closed to fishing. Meanwhile, the other three seasons on the Big Wood make for some pretty idyllic alpine fishing. The freestone river is full of trout and gorgeous views that make you feel a lot farther away from civilization than you are.
Making its way from the snowy mountains above Sun Valley, Trail Creek offers some pretty sweet small-stream fishing. The chilly waters of the creek get stocked often during the height of the fishing season. Trail Creek also passes by the Hemingway Memorial, adding another attraction to spending some time exploring the small mountain stream.
Two of the three best in the fishing business, Silver Creek Outfitters and Lost River Outfitters, can be found on Main Street in Ketchum. Our third is located right in the town of Picabo on the edge of Silver Creek. They all offer full-service tackle shops and knowledgeable staffs. They also offer a variety of guided fishing experiences, from full to half days, for one person or for the whole family. One trip on the water and you’ll see why Sun Valley has long been known for offering some of the best fishing guides in the country.

Out the Backdoor
If you love to hike, there are endless hiking options leading from every community in the Wood River Valley—from short, dogand family-friendly strolls like the Howard Preserve in Bellevue or the Sellgren Trail in Ketchum, to long jaunts into the mountains like Quigley Canyon in Hailey or Trail Creek just beyond Sun Valley.
Easy: Hailey Greenway runs along the Big Wood River and is a perfect place for youngsters to take a hike. One of the most popular places to walk dogs or hit the river for some fishing, the Greenway runs from the Wood River Land Trust’s Draper Wood River Preserve just off Bullion Street in Hailey, down through the Colorado Gulch Preserve off Broadford Road.
Variable: Adams Gulch may be the most popular hiking (and dog walking) spot in the Wood River Valley. Nestled in the tree-covered hills just north of Ketchum, Adams Gulch offers a variety of hiking options, with all kinds of loops for any energy level. If you don’t mind crossing paths with people and pets, this is the perfect hiking spot for you.
Variable: Carbonate is a locals' favorite. Hikers can opt for either the
butt-kicking steep ascent that climbs 1,300 feet in 0.9 miles or the casual meandering switchback trail that reaches the top in 2.4 miles. Either way, this local staple provides sweeping vistas from Hailey and views all the way to Bald Mountain in the north.

covers what is best known during the winter as the Sun Valley Ski Area. With stunning views of the surrounding mountains and access options that include a gondola ride, the Bald Mountain Trail is a must for any hiking fan. It isn’t an easy hike, however, as the trail covers 3,200 vertical feet in five miles. That’s why some folks ride the gondola up and then hike back down.
Smiley Creek Lodge welcomes you with a variety of cozy accommodations from brand new luxury tiny homes, to cabins, yurts, tent sites, and full-hookup RV sites.

Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve offers up some of the most unique terrain in the country, making it a popular spot for day hikes.
Located just over an hour’s drive southeast of the Wood River Valley, Craters of the Moon is an island of lava flows and cinder cones sprawled out in the midst of the “Sagebrush Sea,” as they call the high desert of southern Idaho. Formed during volcanic eruptions over 15,000 years ago, the monument was signed into order by President Calvin Coolidge in 1923. In 1969, Apollo 14 astronauts came to train for their moonwalk by hiking around Craters.
Craters of the Moon offers eight hikes from short strolls to an 8-mile trek. It also offers a unique snowshoeing option in the winter. The Monument is open year-round and its Visitor Center is open daily.
For more information about Craters of the Moon, go to the National Parks Service page at www.nps.gov/crmo or call (208) 527-1300.
The Sawtooth Valley is considered one of the most beautiful mountain valleys on the planet. “Just over the hill,” as most locals say, from the Wood River Valley, the Sawtooth Valley is another short drive that is full of hiking, fishing, mountain biking and water-related fun.
After crossing Galena Summit—and
stopping to take a photo at the Scenic Overlook—the Sawtooth Valley is sprinkled with a series of high mountain lakes. Redfish Lake is the most famous of the drive-to lakes and is named after the once prolific salmon that return some 900 miles from the sea to spawn each year.
The Sawtooth Fish Hatchery, located right along Scenic Highway 75, is a great place to see salmon and steelhead. Endless hiking options can be found along both sides of the highway, especially if you head into the Sawtooth Mountains.
The quaint and rustic town of Stanley is busiest in the summer, when it becomes a hub for bikers, hikers and rafters. The greater Stanley area is home to more than a dozen hotels, lodges and rental options as well as countless camping choices. Stanley is also home to more than a dozen restaurants and bars, although most of them are only open during the warm-weather months.
For more information about dining or lodging in Stanley, contact the Stanley Chamber of Commerce at StanleyCC.org or call (208) 774-3411.

Whether you're new to birding or a seasoned lister, there's nothing quite like spotting a new feathered friend. The thrill of seeing a bird for the first time is akin to summiting a mountain. Initially, new discoveries come easily, but as you ascend, it requires more effort. Fear not, Idaho's high altitudes can aid you in achieving your birding goals.
Idaho's elevated terrain offers birders a paradise with vast open spaces, forests, wetlands, and preserves attracting diverse avian species. Many of these unique birds aren't featured in standard Idaho bird guides due to their preference for higher altitudes. Thankfully, local expert Poo Wright-Pulliam, an artist, volunteer guide, and avid bird enthusiast, shares her years of experience about this special area.
Silver Creek Preserve never disappoints. With over 150 identified species, it’s just a matter of looking up, over, or anywhere! Within the preserve, you’ll see Idaho’s beauties flying, perching, wading, and nesting.
Throughout the preserve, among the songbirds and raptors can be found Bald and Golden Eagles, “gray ghost” Northern Harriers, and Western Meadowlarks If you pay keen attention to the reeds, you may be rewarded with hearing, and possibly seeing, Sora , Virginia Rails, and American Bitterns. And in the twilight of dawn or dusk, a crepuscular Short-eared or Long-eared Owl may just be waiting to greet you on an obliging fence post. While glassing through the sagebrush, look for the Loggerhead Shrike in the summer, and the Northern Shrike in the winter. Also abundant in the winter months are Trumpeter Swans. During the warmer months, there are three varieties of Hummingbirds that flit throughout the preserve. Yes, you read that correctly, THREE: Calliope, Black-chinned , and Rufous.
Wood River Preserve is an ideal home for an array of ducks, rails, and five different species of swallows: The Barn, Cliff, Northern Rough-winged, and Violet-green. The Draper Preserve Bow Bridge is a triumph of architecture and should not be missed. It leads directly onto a short boardwalk overseeing fresh wetlands sprinkled with waterfowl and soundtracked by music from Red-winged Blackbirds. During the winter, the Bohemian Waxwing flutters about, and during the summer,
the Cedar Waxwing arrives in its place. Take Poo’s word for it, searching through the willows for Gray Catbirds, Bullock’s Orioles, Black-headed Grosbeaks, and Yellow and Wilson Warblers is an afternoon well spent.
Centennial Marsh is perfect for those feeling a little more adventurous. Poo recommends the one-hour drive for a chance to spot a myriad of waterbirds. The Sandhill Crane, Black-necked Stilt , White-Faced Ibis, Wilson’s Phalarope, and Black Tern can all be found throughout the area. And, as a bonus, if you visit in late May to early June, you’ll be rewarded with the spectacular view of the widely anticipated camas lily bloom.
Throughout the Valley During the winter months, as you travel throughout the Valley, keep an eye out for Black and Grey-crowned Rosy-Finch (there’s a large flock near Triumph), Clark’s Nutcracker, Red and White-winged Crossbill, and Steller’s Jay. At Howard Preserve, the dense tree trails along the Big Wood River lend themselves to listening for songbirds and watching for river ducks. Keep a lookout for Great Blue Herons, Eagles, and Red-tailed Hawks. Heading up Trail Creek Road to the wetlands, there’s a good chance you will see ducks and possibly moose. Poo remembers with amazement when she once had a Green-winged Teal, Cinnamon Teal, and Blue-winged Teal all in the view of her binoculars. At the base of River Run, along the bike path, numerous songbirds can be heard. And don’t forget to look for Pileated Woodpeckers and Waxwings in the cottonwoods, and American Dippers in the rapids! Two other great spots for birding just outside the Wood River Valley are Carey Lake Wildlife Management Area and Magic Reservoir.
Formerly part of the Red Crossbill family, the Cassia Crossbill is now recognized as Idaho's first endemic bird. Named after Cassia County, it has a specialized beak for feeding on Rocky Mountain lodgepole pine seeds.
Sun Valley may have been founded on skiing, but it’s becoming known as a mountain biking mecca. The entire area is full of good dirt, a great variety of terrain and over 400 miles of single track to explore. There are also plenty of fun and unique rides just a short drive away at places like Fisher Creek, but if you love to ride, there’s really no reason to leave the backyard.
Once the snow melts, Bald Mountain opens for the mountain biking business— and business couldn’t be better. Lift-access riding on Baldy is about as much fun as you can have on two wheels. From the new flow trails to miles of downhill track, riding Sun Valley is tough to top.
Adams Gulch
Adams Gulch just north of Ketchum and Carbonate Mountain just across the river from Hailey are two of the most popular places to ride, but there are great trails and plenty of old dirt roads into the mountains to explore throughout the Valley.
There used to come a time each fall when we’d all put our bikes away for the season and grab our skis. But now we just swap out our road or mountain bike for a fatbike. With tires twice as big as a normal mountain bike, fatbikes are good in snowy and slushy conditions. Fatbikes have actually been around for well over a decade, but they’ve really begun to take off in popularity over the last few years. With the Wood River Trail offering 20 miles of groomed paths perfect for fatbiking, going for a bike ride during the winter no longer sounds like a nutty idea.
Ketchum Bike Park (700 2nd Ave.): A great pump park, grassy rest areas, shade trees and shrub plantings, and bench and bleacher seating.
Trail Park & Track (Quigley Canyon): Made of dirt, clay rollers and berms, a pump track offers a great way for kids of all ages to get active, get a core workout and develop great off-road biking skills.
Forbidden Fruit is a one-way, mountain-bike-only flow trail. It is located in the lower end of Eve's Gulch, and accessed off the Eve's Gulch Trail portion of the 146 Trail. The trail starts with 300 feet of climbing that puts you at the top of the 'flow' portion of the trail.
Forbidden Fruit features big berm-turns and large jumps with multiple roller sections that allow you to test your appetite for air. Areas of the trail may contain loose gravel or downed trees that have come onto the trail since its last round of maintenance. It is always a good idea to start with a slow lap; rolling down the trail to inspect its condition and to know what to expect on your next lap.

More off-road adventure than a pavement ride, gravel-grind riding is a unique mix of on and off-road riding, sometimes with some single track that allows you to cover miles and see incredible off-road Idaho areas. Underground races and organized events, such as Rebecca’s Private Idaho, have cemented the concept of gravel-grind riding to all who love bike adventures. Today, purpose-built gravel bikes are sturdy, but designed for off-pavement use, with good tires, a slightly more upright position, longer wheel base and disc brakes. Gravelgrinder bikes bring the best of both worlds – from smooth single track to epic road rides – into the same outing.

Our Favorite Travels on Gravel
10 - Easy - Quigley Loop Trail/Rd. 4.2 miles. 642’ elevation gain. About 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
A perfect beginner or quick gravel ride, especially good for young children. Start at the trailhead on Quigley Road, just past the end of the pavement. Ride out on the single-track trail to the pond and loop back on the other side of Quigley Canyon until the trail crosses the field and returns to the trailhead on Quigley Road. Or ride the road out to the pond and return on the trail; it’s easier descending on the trail.
- Moderate - Classic Rock Creek to Poverty Flats Loop
35 miles. 1,500’ elevation gain. Expect 2-1/2 to 3/1/2 hours.
This ride is a classic tour of the west Hailey gravel. It is best ridden counter-clockwise and rides in reverse of some of the same roads in the Travels on Gravel map. Start in Hailey and head west on Croy Creek Road. At about 5 miles, turn left on View Road/ Rock Creek Road (at Rock Creek Ranch sign). At approximately 10 miles, there will
be a left turn onto Poverty Flats Road. This turn is easy to miss, but marked by a couple of galvanized storage tanks. Continue on Poverty Flats Road on rolling terrain followed by a 2.3-mile climb and fast descent to Glendale Road. Continue on Glendale Road, crossing Highway 75. Take a right turn just before Bellevue Farms subdivision and follow around to the south and then connect with Gannett Road. Head back to Hailey via the bike path starting in Bellevue or alternately on Broadford Road.
7 - Difficult - Muldoon Canyon
A “big” ride with lots of vertical. 16 miles. 1,500’ elevation gain. About 2-3 hours.
This out-and-back ride on a gravel road is only lightly traveled but rough in places. It follows Seamans Gulch in a narrow shady canyon until it starts the climb to Muldoon Summit. Start from Bellevue on Muldoon Road and pass turnoffs to Martin Canyon on the left, and to Sharps Canyon on the right (see separate rides for those) until you start climbing in an open basin. At the summit you can stop and enjoy views of the Pioneer Mountains before descending.
Sun Valley is not only home to America’s first destination ski resort, we’re also home to the first ski lift. You can even see its remnants at Proctor Mountain, just east of the resort.
We’re awfully proud of our skiing history around here, and for good reason. From Sun Valley’s celebrity-filled start in 1936 to officially being named “Nordic Town USA” a few years ago, skiing is part of the foundation of our community.
One of the biggest reasons skiing is so big around here is that we offer something for everyone. Maybe you like Black Diamond bump runs or carving endless slalom turns on Baldy. Perhaps playing in the terrain parks or learning to ski or board on Dollar is more you’re style. Maybe you like to Nordic or cross-country ski on our more than 100 miles of regular groomed trails. Or maybe you love to earn your turns and hit the backcountry and carve tracks along Galena Summit. Even if a simple snowshoe followed by a cup of hot
cocoa is you’re style, we’ve got you covered there, too.
Baldy, also referred to as the Sun Valley Ski Resort, offers 100 runs and 3,400 vertical feet of alpine skiing. Baldy is well known for its consistent snow (averaging nearly 20 feet each ski season) and groomed runs, which are some of the best in the world thanks to the nation’s finest snowmaking system.
Dollar Mountain is located on the other side of Ketchum from Baldy. Offering 22 runs and nearly 1,000 feet of vertical, Dollar is home to a variety of terrain parks that get changed throughout the season. It also offers a Magic Carpet and plenty of runs for those new to skiing.
Rotarun is the “little mountain with the big heart” in Hailey. Skiing and riding is
available on weekends at the 475-foot-high ski hill. The ticket price to ride the J-bar is a simple donation to the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, which runs Rotarun and offers learn-to-ski programs there for elementary school kids.
Most people don’t realize that Sun Valley Heli-Ski was issued the first U.S. Forest Service heli-ski permit in 1966 and is still lucky enough to lay claim to the largest permit in the lower 48 states. Their skiable terrain includes three ranges (Smoky, Boulder and Pioneer mountains) and covers more than 750,000 acres.
Soldier Mountain is located in the Sawtooth National Forest just north of Fairfield. The mountain is great for families, offers 36 runs and cat skiing that gives adventurers access to Smoky Dome, the highest peak in the Soldier Mountains.
Sun Valley is a gateway to endless, powderfilled backcountry terrain with awe-inspiring views. Accessible by helicopters, hut systems, snowmobiles, and by human powered means, enthusiasts will revel in the area’s expansive mountain ranges. BY CLOUDS MCCLOUD PHOTOS COURTESY OF WOOD RIVER PICKLEBALL
Pickleball was invented in the Northwest, so it was only a matter of time before it caught on in Idaho.
First created back in 1965 by some bored families on Bainbridge Island in Washington, the sport has really caught on recently. Pickleball has been the fastest growing sport in the country for several years and the Wood Rive Valley is proof.
“Pickleball has definitely arrived in the Valley,” Lee Sponaugle said. “We have a really great pickleball community here.”
“Pickleball is the every-person’s sport.” – Adam Taylor
Lee is a nationally-ranked player and the President of the Wood River Pickleball Alliance (WRPA). The former tennis player used to think pickleball was “just a fad.” Then he played and like so many others, Lee quickly got hooked on the sport.
It’s estimated that nearly 20 million Americans played pickleball last year alone. The local WRPA league itself has nearly 200 members. And it doesn’t take a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist to figure out why pickleball is so popular.
“Pickleball is the every-person’s sport,” Adam Taylor, WRPA’s Vice President, explained.
Featuring small courts, short games, light paddles and soft, forgiving pickleballs, it’s the rare sport where people of all ages and just about any physical ability can learn to play and have fun rather quickly. Pickleball is also a very social sport, which is a big part of its appeal.
“Most pickleballers are just out to have fun, to get some exercise and be social,” Lee said. “They’re very welcoming and you just have to play once to feel like you’re a pickleball player and part of the sport.”
The Wood River Valley now offers pickleball options yearround. Blaine County Recreation District, or “BCRD,” has indoor
courts in Hailey offering leagues and clinics. The WRPA has an outdoor summer league at Atkinson Park in Ketchum and indoors during the winters at Gravity Fitness in Hailey. Adam and others also lead free clinics for players of all abilities most Friday mornings.
There’s no doubt about it, people have gone crazy for pickleball and the Wood River Valley is no different.
“The pop-pop-pop sound is a beacon,” Adam said. “It’s the sound of something fun happening.”
In addition to the local pickleball leagues, the WRV now hosts three annual events that draw players from far and wide.
WRPA hosts their Summer Kick-off Tournament.
The MSCL Pickleball Bash is held at The Valley Club. The star-studded fundraiser includes legends in racket sports like Mats Wilander and John McEnroe.
The Sun Valley Pickleball Classic attracts some of the best players from across the country to the cozy confines of the historic resort.
BY MIKE MCKENNA PHOTOS COURTESY OF WOOD RIVER WOMEN'S FOUNDATION
One of the great things about being a girl growing up in the Wood River Valley is that you don’t have to look very far for some great role models.
A stroll down Sun Valley Road leads past statues of some famous local female athletes like skier Gretchen Fraser, Paralympian and politician Muffy Davis or snowboarder Kaitlyn Farrington. Olympic skier Picabo Street even has streets named after her in both Hailey and Ketchum.
But the Wood River Valley is also blessed with lots of female role models off the slopes as well. Women who are making positive impacts in the lives of just about everyone lucky enough to call our slice of Idaho home.
The Wood River Women’s Foundation (WRWF) is celebrating 20 years of making big, and small but important, impacts throughout the Valley. Fittingly, the idea for the nonprofit first took place on a chairlift.
One day back in 2005, Barbara Thrasher found herself on a chairlift with a member of the Seattle Women’s Foundation. After hearing about what they do, Barbara was inspired to start a similar group in Sun Valley.
With the help of other local women like Jo Murray, a group was invited to tea to discuss the idea. Almost all the women agreed to join with the now late Camille McCray handing over the first donation stating, “You must start. You must do this.”
An astounding 52 Letters of Interest for support came in the first year the WRWF started giving out grants. It was instantly obvious that our community needed a lot of help and needed some heroes like the WRWF.
“What’s amazing about this organization is when we ask for help, the hands that go up,” Barbara said. “We have people who are so talented here. I’m constantly amazed at who steps up to help when we need it.”
The WRWF has given out nearly $5 million to 294 different grants over the last two decades. Membership has also grown tenfold, with around 300 members, making it one of the largest women’s foundations in the country.
“One of the things that’s makes us different is that you can do something small or do something huge and still make a difference. Time, treasure or talent, any or all, there’s a lot of ways to help,” Barbara said. “In small community like ours you can see the difference you’re making.”
In 2025, WRWF awarded $375,000 to 25 different local organizations. This philanthropy touches every corner of our community, supporting organizations Like Girls On The Run, The Hunger Coalition, Bellevue Library, Wood River Early Learning Collaborative and even helping projects like building a permanent stage at Hailey’s Hop Porter Park.
“One of the things that’s makes us different is that you can do something small or do something huge and still make a difference.”
– Barbara Thrasher
“We give people a chance to share why they make a difference? Why they matter?” Barbara said about the grant process, which includes voting by the entire membership.
The other benefit of the WRWF is the connections the members make with one another and our community.
“I have made so many friends there,” longtime member Marcia Liebich said. “And it’s nice to know that I’ve helped make an impact up and down the Valley.”
“The foundation is really about helping people flourish and live
their best lives. It really makes you feel like a true member of the community,” WRWF President Jeannie Shroads said.
“It’s about more than money. It’s about education and community. It’s about moving the needle,” Barbara said.
“The real power of our organization is the women we draw from. It’s outstanding, and both humbling and inspiring,” Jeannie said.
From food security to self-confidence, from the arts to the slopes to just simply having fun and making new friends, life is better for girls growing up—and all us living—in the Wood River Valley because of the efforts and support of the WRWF.

The Wood River Valley, though small, offers a diverse range of educational opportunities, including eight public schools and five notable alternative education institutions. These alternative schools—Sun Valley Community School, The Sage School, Syringa Mountain School, Pioneer Montessori School, and Trinity School—each provide unique approaches to learning, catering to different student needs and philosophies.
Founded in 1973, Sun Valley Community School is the valley’s only independent pre-K through 12th-grade institution, serving about 435 students. The school is recognized for its small class sizes, strong academics, and distinctive programs. Its Outdoor Program, integral since the school’s inception, offers students hands-on experiences such as river rafting, snow shelter building, rock climbing, and solo wilderness trips in their junior and senior years. The school also features specialized Academies—Ski, Outdoor Leadership, and Creative Arts—allowing students to pursue their passions alongside academic studies. The Ski Academy includes a boarding program, enabling student-athletes to live near both the school and worldclass ski facilities.
Established in 2009 in Hailey, The Sage School was created by educators seeking to reconnect students with nature and foster curiosity. Serving around 100 students in grades 6–12, the school
organizes students into “bands” rather than traditional grades, each focusing on different developmental themes. The curriculum emphasizes academic, cognitive, social-emotional skills, human ecology, self-awareness, and community responsibility. Students participate in daily Spanish, annual field studies, weekly community action, and daily wellness practices, blending academic rigor with personal growth and community engagement.
Syringa Mountain School, a tuition-free public charter school founded in 2013, serves K–8 students and is inspired by the Waldorf education model. The school emphasizes real-world, hands-on learning and strong connections to nature, supported by programs in farming, gardening, and sustainable living. The curriculum is delivered in six-week thematic blocks and includes standard subjects as well as storytelling, arts, physical activity, world languages, seasonal studies, and practical arts like fiber crafts and animal husbandry. The school’s approach aims to foster healthy relationships with the world and preserve the essence of childhood.
Founded in 1980 in Ketchum, Pioneer Montessori School began with just 18 students and now serves children from 18 months to 12 years old. The school follows the Montessori model, which encourages independence and problem-solving in a carefully prepared environment. Students learn in multi-age classrooms over three-
year cycles, allowing them to progress from newcomers to mentors. The Montessori “guide” supports each child’s individual learning journey, fostering ownership and passion for learning.
The newest of the group, Trinity School in Bellevue, was founded in 2015 and serves 20–24 students in grades 1–8. The school operates in a unique setting—a large yurt on three acres by the Big Wood River, shared with animals and abundant wildlife. Inspired by Waldorf principles and led by founder Travis Scott, Trinity School’s curriculum covers traditional academics, practical skills (such as gardening and woodworking), arts, theater, and festivals. The school’s philosophy centers on developing the thinking, feeling, and willing aspects of each child, and emphasizes collaboration among students, teachers, and parents.
Together, these five schools illustrate the Wood River Valley’s commitment to educational diversity, offering families a range of philosophies and environments to best support their children’s growth and learning.

Community means something around here and our education system is committed to building foundations that create exceptional humans. When the world seems to be moving away from unique forms of education, our school district is embracing all the different ways students learn. Our teachers, in both public and private schools, are combining real-world experiences with academics to build confident and passionate humans who will have a lifelong passion for learning.

St. Luke’s Wood River and the St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation are excited to bring cutting-edge surgical technology closer to home via a robotic-assisted surgery system, transforming healthcare access and outcomes for patients in the Wood River Valley.
Robotic-assisted surgery is rapidly advancing healthcare by enabling surgeons to operate with unmatched precision and control through small incisions. For patients, this means less pain, reduced blood loss, fewer complications, lower infection risk, minimal scarring, shorter hospital stays, and faster recovery times.
Acquiring this technology marks a significant step forward for St. Luke’s Wood River, expanding surgical capabilities and providing advanced procedures locally. Surgeries in areas such as urology, women’s health, and general surgery can be performed right here in the valley, eliminating the need for travel. This ensures patients can recover near family, friends, and support networks while avoiding travel-related expenses. This investment underscores St. Luke’s and the Foundation’s commitment to delivering world-class care in a rural setting.
St. Luke’s Wood River (SLWR) Medical Center is the only hospital within a 75-mile radius of Ketchum, Sun Valley, Hailey, and Bellevue. With 25 inpatient beds, about 440 employees, and 45 physicians on active staff, SLWR offers a wide range of services, including OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Family and Internal Medicine, General Surgery, Cardiology, Orthopedics, Dermatology, Gastroenterology, and Urology, with additional specialties provided by visiting physicians. The hospital features comprehensive diagnostic
services such as laboratory testing, X-ray, CT, EEG, MRI, and 3D mammography at the Women’s Imaging Center.
SLWR’s Oncology Infusion Services Department is staffed by registered nurses trained in chemotherapy and infusion therapies, working closely with visiting oncologists from St. Luke’s Cancer Institute. Unique among Idaho hospitals of its size, SLWR provides 24/7 care from board-certified emergency physicians.
The hospital also operates a clinic in Hailey, offering Family Medicine, Neurology, Mental Health Services, Rehabilitation, and the Center for Community Health. Walk-in care is available Monday through Friday, 8:30–11:30 a.m., with same-day appointments by calling 208-788-3434. The Center for Community Health provides bilingual, coordinated health and wellness services, including health promotion, screenings, referrals, insurance access, emergency financial assistance, support groups, and family education.
For information or to find a doctor, contact the Center for Community Health at 208-727-8733 or visit www.stlukesonline.org.
SLWR is part of St. Luke’s Health System, which includes multiple hospital campuses and a broad mix of diagnostic and clinical sites serving southern Idaho and eastern Oregon. Walk-in care is also available Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Suite 109 of the Physician Office Annex next to the hospital, with lab, X-ray, and language services available.
For life-threatening emergencies, call 911. For after-hours support, clinics offer telephone services to help determine if you need an appointment, urgent care, or emergency services. MyChart allows patients to view test results, contact providers, request refills, schedule appointments (including telehealth), and access medical
records. St. Luke’s also offers on-demand virtual care daily from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. through MyChart, providing convenient access to primary care providers for many health concerns.
Sign up at www.stlukesonline.org/mychart for easy access to tools and information to manage your health.
The St. Luke’s Wood River Foundation has a singular commitment to achieving excellence in health care for the community of the greater Wood River region. St. Luke’s Wood River opened in 2000, thanks to the overwhelming support of the community, which raised more than $20 million to help fund the cost of constructing and equipping the new hospital.
Since the hospital’s opening, the Foundation has greatly expanded its efforts to develop community investment in the hospital and the services it provides. SLWRF’s focus continues to be on enhancing patient care, whether through advancing technological capabilities, developing innovative health and wellness programs, or enabling a greater scope of medical services to our community members. For more information, visit www.slwrf.org
Air St. Luke’s transports patients in critical situations via helicopter, fixed wing or ground transport. With a dedicated team of professionals highly trained to the specific needs of newborns, pregnant women, children, and adult patients with cardiac or other critical needs, Air St. Luke’s is the region’s most comprehensive medical transport program, operating as mobile critical care units with advanced lifesaving equipment and technology.
From bases in Boise and Twin Falls, ASL serves southern Idaho, eastern Oregon, and northern Nevada. And through our partners in the Association of Air Medical Memberships Programs (AAMMP), coverage for Air St. Luke’s members extends to northern and eastern Idaho, Oregon, Washington, western Montana, and northern California south to the Santa Barbara area. The rumors were swirling around the Wood River Valley like fallen leaves during gusty autumn winds.
The historic Liberty Theater in Hailey was said to be in a state of ill repair. Word on the street was that it wasn’t safe, that it was about to crumble over.
For years, the theater sat quietly on Main Street, in the same place it's been since 1938, hoping for a hero to save it from the demolition dumpster.
That’s when a team of locals stepped up.
was in solid shape, they hit the ground running.
They gave the building some love by upgrading its sound, lighting and projection systems and got a beer and wine license. Pete Vallimarescu was enticed to leave San Francisco to come manage the Liberty. As soon as Pete toured Hailey’s historic theater he knew he would take the job.
"Every town deserves a local theater to support the arts and hold community events."
“It would have been a shame, it would have really hurt our community’s collective soul to lose that historic building,” said Logan Fredrickson, who has family roots in the Wood River Valley that run three generations deep.
– Pete Vallimarescu
Logan, who owns Windermere Sun Valley and is a former ski instructor, led a group of local investors who purchased the Liberty. Their first move was to have it inspected by a structural engineer. Once the delightfully surprising news came back that the theater
“I was blown away by how beautiful it is and what great potential it has,” Pete said.
Originally built by local contractor Jack Rutter as a “modern building to hold community events,” the Art Deco building was purchased and remodeled by actors Bruce Willis and Demi Moore in 1994. For the next couple of decades, the Liberty Theater hosted everything from major Hollywood movie premiers to the annual Warren Miller Ski Tour, from plays by The Liberty Theatre Company (TLTC) to performances from Footlight Dance Centre and talks with celebrities like Jodi Foster.
That’s why so many folks are thrilled that thanks to some impassioned locals, the Liberty Theater will once again fulfill its mission
to be a place that brings our community together.
“Every town deserves a local theater to support the arts and hold community events,” Pete said.
Pete has been bringing lots of local and touring bands. Besides offering regular servings of musical talent, the Liberty also shows films, hosts talks and is home to the TLTC for 22 weeks annually. Attendance for the theatre company’s plays last season was up a whopping 225%.
“It’s really wonderful Logan, Pete and their team stepped up and how it’s all, ultimately, worked out for the best,” said Naomi MacDougall Jones, TLTC’s Executive Director. “Our company has a home. The community has access to the arts in a beautiful theater that has its charms, too.”
Pete, Logan and most of the ownership team can be found working most events and they want everyone to feel welcome.
“Our goal is to get as many people through the doors to experience the arts in this magical place as possible,” Logan said. “There’s such a great vibe as soon as you step inside.”

The Liberty Theatre Company (TLTC) was founded in 2021. The mission of the company of storytellers is to harness the art of live performances for the community through established plays, new works and dynamic educational programming for all. Featuring a mix of both local and national talent, TLTC offers variety performances throughout the year.

While it may be the close proximity to nature and the worldclass skiing, biking, and general recreating that brings people to the Wood River Valley, it’s the sense of community and the support of that community that truly makes it a one-of-a-kind place to live. One can truly get a feel for that sense of community when attending one of the area’s local events, whether it’s a block party for a local business, a free musical performance, an intimate dinner party, or a fundraising gala for one of the many local nonprofits.
Spend any amount of time in the Wood River Valley, and you're bound to stumble upon an event. Beloved annual traditions like the Trailing of the Sheep, the Sun Valley Film Festival, Wagon Days, the Sun Valley Writers' Conference, and the Sun Valley Wine Auction draw crowds back year after year, showcasing the area's unique character. Beyond these signature events, the community's generosity shines through in the numerous fundraisers supporting vital local organizations. The Advocates' Color Our World, Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation's (SVSEF) Wild Game Dinner,
Higher Ground's Hero's Journey, and the YMCA's Classic are just a few examples of how residents rally together to support causes they believe in.
But it's not just the large-scale events that define the Wood River Valley's event-centric culture. The smaller, more intimate gatherings—5k runs, block parties, birthday dinners, corporate retreats, and musical performances—contribute to the area's daily vibrancy. These "mini celebrations" demonstrate how deeply ingrained the spirit of community is, with residents finding any excuse to come together and share in the joy of life.
Given the powerful benefits of these events—boosting tourism, strengthening community bonds, and raising crucial funds for local organizations—it's no wonder that hiring an event planner is considered a must. That's where dedicated professionals come in. We sat down with local planners Amanda Porino of Organic Events and Hanna Thompson of Crush + Bow. Amanda has been planning events in the Wood River Valley for six years, says, "Whenever I recognized a need for a certain event or community experience, I
felt compelled to make it happen." Her passion for creating meaningful experiences is evident in her work with nonprofit organizations, private parties, and intimate weddings.
Hanna Thompson, with 25 years of event-planning experience, echoes this sentiment. After moving to the area in 2019, she saw an opportunity to focus on life's celebrations beyond weddings, launching Crush + Bow to fill that niche. "Anyone can have a party," she says, "but I like when I can do it for a specific person, for a specific reason, with a specific theme or direction." Her dedication to crafting personalized events speaks to the Wood River Valley's appreciation for the unique and meaningful.
Planning any event, regardless of size, is no small feat. From securing the perfect location to managing budgets, catering, décor, and countless other details, it takes expertise and careful attention to detail to create a truly memorable experience. The planning process involves close collaboration with clients, from initial meetings to brainstorming sessions and vendor coordination. As Amanda puts it, "It's about identifying who and what will best serve both the client and the unique nature of the event." In the Wood River Valley, where events are more than just gatherings, these planners are essential in bringing the community's vibrant spirit to life.
"Despite the Wood River Valley’s growing diversity, our community remains uniquely close-knit and generous."
– Penny Weiss, The Event
"Despite the Wood River Valley’s growing diversity, our community remains uniquely close-knit and generous. There’s a real sense that we love to come together—not just to celebrate, but to give back while we’re having fun," states, longtime local event planner Penny Weiss. Whether it’s a festival, a fundraiser, or a neighborhood gathering, the spirit of generosity is visible in every event in our community, making each celebration meaningful for everyone involved.

A little bit of everything—Ketchum Style
BY KELSEY WATSON PHOTOS COURTESY
If you're looking for a place to stay in Ketchum that is familyfriendly, in a prime location and isn't too tough on your wallet, look no further than the Best Westerns of Ketchum—The Kentwood and The Tyrolean.
Located right in the heart of our picturesque ski town, the Best Western Tyrolean puts you steps away from boutique shopping, toprated restaurants and easy access to the mountain—making it the perfect base for both adventure and après-ski relaxation.
"When you stay here, you get a little bit of everything," said Mary Pullin, the general manager of the Tyrolean Lodge.
In addition to the shopping, good eats and outdoor activities, the Tyrolean is right next to a Mountain Rides bus stop, offering free transportation to easily explore the rest of the Wood River Valley!
Although the Tyrolean Lodge was originally built in 1953, it was renovated in 2016. “We've tried to keep the authentic Austrian aesthetic but with modern amenities," Mary stated.
The layout of the hotel also makes it unique, built in sections with the middle piece last—fitting in like the last piece of a puzzle. You're guaranteed to love your stay here with 52 rooms to choose from and amenities like a pool, fitness center and complimentary breakfast.
If you love the sound of cozy alpine charm and convenience, you'll feel right at home at The Kentwood, where rustic elegance meets unbeatable town and mountain access. The Kentwood, built in 1994 and renovated in 2020, is located on South Main Street in Ketchum and shares the Tyrolean's same outstanding access to the mountain, good food and shopping. The Kentwood has 57 rooms, some with balconies, and amenities like a pool, fitness center, and
onsite dining. Although The Kentwood attracts visitors of all interests and hobbies, being so close to some of our favorite retail shops and outfitters is a huge advantage.
"The area seems to attract many people who love the outdoors, from kayaking to rafting and mountain biking," Mary explained. You truly cannot go wrong with either Best Western locations.
No matter the reason for your stay, The Best Westerns in Ketchum offer a little bit of everything to match your needs.

BY CLOUDS MCCLOUD PHOTOS BY RAY GADD, COURTESY OF WARFIELD DISTILLERY & BREWERY
They don’t call this place Sun Valley for nothing. Our little slice of “IdaHome” averages over 300 days of sunshine a year.
We do our best to make the most out of all this sunshine by playing and partying hard, which is why we have many sweet patios and decks to enjoy our après adventures. Here’s a rundown of some of our favorites.
The terrace at The Grill at Knob Hill Inn is a gardener’s delight, ideal for some higher-level dining. Meanwhile, the patio at Grumpy’s offers views of Baldy, delightfully greasy burgers and their legendary schooners of beer.
Sawtooth Brewery and Lefty’s both offer small decks and big beers. Bigwood Bread's patio is the perfect place for lunch and some of their hand-made artisan breads and treats.
The rooftop decks at the Sawtooth Club and Sun Valley Wine Company offer elevated and exceptionally tasty experiences. Despo's serves outstanding Mexican food at their newly remodeled deck in the heart of town, while the spacious back patio of the Limelight Hotel is tough to top for views, tasty treats and live music during the high seasons.
The most famous deck in Ketchum can be found atop the Warfield Distillery & Brewery. The tasty beers and spirits made on the lower level match the views from the rooftop deck.
Outdoor dining and world-class fare can be found everywhere you go around Sun Valley. The Lodge offers patios at both Gretchen’s and the Duchin Lounge. The Inn has patio seating at the Ram. The Sun Valley Club’s multi-tiered deck offers impressive views of the Trail Creek Golf Course with Baldy and Dollar mountains in the backdrop.
Hailey is a very bike-friendly community and Main Street is lined with places to park your bike and enjoy some outdoor dining. Look no further than the popular patio at the Power House Pub & Bike Shop. The bicycle bar has an impressive Europeanheavy beer selection and a small but tasty menu.
If you want action right in the heart of town, La Cabañita at the Mint has great outdoor seating where you'll feel like you're in the center of of Hailey's local life.
The patio at Wiseguy Pizza Pie is the perfect place to grab a cold one and a slice. Sun Valley Brewery serves up handcrafted ales, big meals and a nice view of Della Mountain as well as regular live music.
Sawtooth Brewery has a small deck, but often opens up the brewhouse doors so live bands have a place to play, leaving plenty of room for dancing. The Wicked Spud is the place to be most
Wednesdays when they host live music in support of local nonprofit organizations.
DaVinci’s on Bullion Street and Dang’s Thai Cuisine & Sushi Bar on Main each have a small deck, but serve up big flavors, perfect for fans of authentic Italian or Asian meals, respectively.
CK’s Real Food has long served not only some of the best food in Idaho, but its patio is one of the prettiest.
The back deck at Mahoney’s is the place to be in Bellevue for burgers, brews. They also have live music on Thursday nights during the summer. The new La Cabañita has a large pattio. The small decks at Mama Inéz and The Cutthroat Club are also great locations to soak up some rays on sunny days.

There are also lots of nice places to start your day with some outdoor breakfast refreshments. Hailey Coffee Company and Java both offer outdoor seating at their locations in Hailey and Ketchum and the summer flowerbeds beside the Konditorei’s patio in the Sun Valley Village are some of the nicest around. Maude's in west Ketchum has nice outdoor seating to enjoy the rays. Ashley's Coffee Corner on Main Street in Bellevue has a nice little patio out front where you can enjoy a great cup of coffee and watch the world hustle by, Idaho style.

AN OVERVIEW OF OUR RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL REAL ESTATE MARKET
BY MATT GELSO
The market through 2024 and into 2025. While sales and dollar volumes do not indicate explosive growth, quality properties, priced appropriately, have traded ownership with relative ease. Hailey and the Wood River Valley continue to see new real estate investment and reasonable growth driven by a strong demand for the quality of life and community that the area provides.
Market Dynamics: The supply of commercial property for sale in Hailey, especially light industrial property, has continued to fall short of the market demand. With no major commercial development on the horizon, this situation does not appear to be changing. This dynamic will continue to increase value for current owners, but it does create a challenge for expanding the local business base. On the lease front, retail space is tough to find and office space has mostly been filled. While there remains some office availability, we continue to search for the right spaces for a number of local users. Interest rates remain stubbornly higher than the historical lows seen in 2020/21, but the market appears to have normalized this rate environment and is moving forward with adjusted expectations.
Multifamily Housing: The City of Hailey continues to prioritize the development of housing attainable for critical workers. There are a number of active projects within Hailey, including the major redevelopment of the historic Ellsworth Inn property and additional development projects by ARCH, the Wood River Community Housing Trust, and the Blaine County School District.
Envision Hailey: “Planning Today For A Resilient Tomorrow." After more than a year of community and business input, diligent work by city staff, and analysis from consultants, the Updated Hailey Comprehensive Plan will be adopted in 2025. Last completed in 2010, with an estimated 10-year lifespan, the updated plan creates a “consensus around an overarching vision for Hailey’s diverse community." The document is aspirational in nature and acts as a guide for land use and development planning for the next decade. Visit haileycityhall.org to explore the full plan.
While the greater world continues its tumultuous progression, Hailey and the Wood River Valley remain great places to live, with access to excellent services and a wonderful community. We are cautiously optimistic that the Hailey and Wood River Valley commercial real estate markets will weather whatever is thrown at them.
Thanks to Matt Gelso, CCIM of Paul Kenny & Matt Bogue Real Estate for this piece. Paul Kenny, Matt Bogue, and Matt Gelso make up the Kenny-Bogue Team and possess a combined 51 years of experience with commercial real estate sales, leasing, and investments in the Wood River Valley.
What's your Sun Valley story?
Lisa and her husband, Michael, moved to the Wood River Valley (WRV), making a dream come true. They began their adventure after Michael proposed during a college trip; and, later in life, they became permanent residents. Jill enticed Jason with childhood ski photos of Baldy’s majestic views. Once he had arrived in Sun Valley, it was without reservation that Sun Valley would become their new home. Both couples like hiking and snowshoeing, skiing, golfing and playing racket sports. With a wide variety of restaurants, musical venues and the summer symphony, in addition to evening activities, “difficult” choices must be made.
What are your favorite things about living here?
Many of our friends and neighbors have been called here over the years to experience an outdoor lifestyle. The mountains, rivers and fresh air provide the backdrop for healthy life choices and abun dant recreation. These shared interests bring together people from all walks of life.
Lisa, how did you and Jill get into real estate?
We both share a passion for architecture and design. While look ing for a new home after college, and enthusiastically enjoying the process, Jill realized she wanted to assist others to find their dream home. And, as I have a deep knowledge of the WRV, it was a natural step for me to become a real estate agent. Together we love to help our clients with buying and selling needs.
How does the next year or so look for our local markets?
We believe the real estate market is stabilizing after the rush to buy during 2020, but it is still higher than pre-COVID. With world events and shifting economies, most markets will respond to their local economic demands. As ever, though, the WRV will remain a desired location.
Is the Wood River Valley still a good real estate investment?
Yes! We both believe that this community is a great value rela tive to other mountain resorts. Not only is the pricing competitive, but the climate and elevation are conducive to comfortable full-time living. The WRV offers finite land, mountain overlays, and natu ral landscapes. These factors are a large draw for people wanting to escape city life, regardless of whether it’s a primary or vacation home. Even more than being a sound real estate investment, we believe that living in the WRV is a wonderful lifestyle investment.
Any tips or advice on buying a home locally?
During the home buying process we strive to refine our clients' priorities and expectations. Buying a home can be an emotional expe rience as well as an educated guess relative to future markets. We believe that what is important for either is knowing how a property fits into your personal lifestyle. Does the location, square footage, floorplan, or land meet your needs? We encourage clients to trust their instincts. How many people walk into a house and just say “this is the one!!” We help our clients through the entire process and for as long as it takes to find the perfect property!
