THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2023 5
WELCOME TO THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY L E T T E R F R O M O U R B OA R D P R E S I D E N T
Each of our members plays an essential role in the fabric of our community. It is a great honor to serve as your Chamber President for 2023 alongside a team of dedicated Board of Directors, and our tireless Executive Director, Mike McKenna. Like many who now reside in the Wood River Valley, our family was a frequent visitor to the valley for over 40 years. Four years ago we moved to Hailey to make it our home base, and very soon after I jumped in to serve on the Chamber Board to serve my new community in a meaningful way. The Chamber team is committed to supporting the health and vitality of every Chamber member in the Wood River Valley from Bellevue, Hailey, Ketchum, and Sun Valley. We know each member plays an essential role in the fabric of our community. Their pride and passion inspires us to provide programs and services to foster the success and sparkle of the valley’s business community while preserving all the special qualities of our small-town America feel.
ANNIE MCCAULEY WITH HER HUSBAND, BRIAN, AND THEIR DOG, EDDIE
In the year ahead, you’ll find your favorite Chamber-sponsored community events, like the popular 4th of July parade down Hailey’s Main Street, the Turkey Trot family fun run on Thanksgiving morning, and the Chili Cook-Off, to name a few. Alongside these popular events we’ll celebrate new business openings with ribbon cuttings, offer Business After Hours networking opportunities, and continue to manage the Welcome Center in Hailey, publishing our award-winning Discover the Wood River Valley Guide, which is distributed locally and around the state of Idaho, and advocating for Wood River Valley businesses with local, county and state government officials. We have a full plate and a small staff, but it is all well worth the effort for a community as special as ours. Whether you are a Chamber member or not, you are invited to visit the Chamber website (valleychamber.org) to learn about all the goings on in our special part of the world! Sincerely,
Annie McCauley Board President

OUR COMMUNITIES
1 BLAINE COUNTY
OUR ENVIRONMENT Located about 65 miles north of Twin Falls, Blaine County covers 2,661 square miles and stretches from the Salmon River drainage in the north to the Snake River in the south. The 137-mile-long Big Wood River drains the central portion of the county. Approximately 80% of the county’s land area is protected federal and state land. There are 82 peaks above 10,000 feet, the tallest of which is Hyndman Peak (elev. 12,008’). Mountain ranges include the Pioneer, Boulder, White Cloud, Smoky, and Sawtooth Mountains. There are 62 lakes in the county, including two-mile-long Alturas Lake south of Stanley and numerous small alpine lakes.
OUR PEOPLE Blaine County’s total population was 24,872 in 2021, an increase of nearly 20% over 2010. The population is 94.9% white and 21.7% Hispanic. Blaine County’s people are highly educated relative to the rest of the state and the nation, with more than 40% of residents having earned a bachelor’s degree or higher. 2021 per capita income in Blaine County ($40,739) was the highest of Idaho’s 44 counties, and the county’s median household income ($70,021) exceeded that of the state by 11 percent and the nation as a whole by 3 percent. 12 DISCOVER HAILEY & THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2023

Idaho State Highway 75 runs north-south through the county, which includes the cities of Bellevue, Carey, Hailey, Ketchum, and Sun Valley. Many of those visiting the county stay in one of 6,426 seasonal housing units, which represent 30% of the total housing stock. Ketchum and Sun Valley lead the county in seasonal housing, with 38% and 68% seasonal housing, respectively. co.blaine.id.us • 206 1st Ave. S., Hailey, ID 83333

5 REASONS TO JOIN THE CHAMBER 1 IT'S GOOD MARKETING We’re proud of the people and businesses that make up The Chamber of Hailey and the Wood River Valley and we love to share their news and events. We market through our new website, our weekly e-Newsletters, popular Facebook page and our growing Instagram account. We celebrate our members through our nationally distributed Guide and our Chamber Corner columns in the Wood River Weekly. We help create and pay for print, radio, television and online advertisements. And we do lots of old-school, person-to-person marketing, too.
2 YOU GET IN THE GUIDE Each year we publish our award-winning Discover the Wood River Valley Guide. Designed to look and read like a lifestyle magazine, our annual Guide is produced locally and helps visitors and folks interested in moving here learn about all our area has to offer. The Guide stars our Chamber members and gets sent all over the country as well as read thousands of times online.
3 IT'S A GOOD BUSINESS INVESTMENT Joining The Chamber is a tax-deductible business expense. That’s why being part of The Chamber of Hailey and the Wood River Valley and taking advantage of all we have to offer is one of the best marketing deals your business or nonprofit will ever find. 14 DISCOVER HAILEY & THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2023
4 IT GETS YOU & YOUR STAFF NETWORKING One of the most rewarding things The Chamber does is to connect people. We help create relationships amongst fellow business and community members, especially at our two monthly events, Wake Up with The Chamber (on the second Tuesday morning) and our “BAHs” or Business After Hours (on the third Thursday evening). They are always free, open to the public and a fun way to make new connections, hear local news and catch up with familiar faces.
5 IT‘S AN IMPACTFUL WAY TO SUPPORT OUR COMMUNITY Every time you support The Chamber or our members you are making a direct and positive impact on our community. You help thousands of local employees—your family, friends and neighbors—who work at Chamber businesses and nonprofits. You support lots of Chamberbacked events that make life here better, from the 5B Father’s Day Bash to bringing back the Hailey Days of the Old West Rodeo, from the Fourth of July fireworks to Trailing of the Sheep. We also help thousands of visitors at the Welcome Center in Hailey and answer phone calls about everything from snow and flooding issues to the best places to camp, ski, hike, shop, eat, drink and be merry. Most people don’t realize that The Chamber is a nonprofit with the simple goal of helping our businesses and community. We appreciate your support and having you be part of the solution.

TAKE A STAYCATION BY MIKE MCKENNA

he best advice I ever got about living in a ski town came from my boss at the time, a short and fiery legendary local named Mark Fisher. “The only way you’re ever going to be happy living in a ski town is if you occasionally take a vacation and don’t go anywhere,” Fisher said, from across the pick-up window at the Sun Valley Brewing Company and Café in Hailey. When I was first lucky enough to call the Wood River Valley home in the 1990s, I spent a few years bartending at Idaho’s oldest microbrewery—Sun Valley Brewery was founded in 1986 and the café opened in 1992. “Sometimes you’ve got to play tourist, too, and remember why you live here,” explained Fisher, who had a head and face full of dusty blond hair and who tragically passed away while driving down one of the old, dusty Idaho mountain roads he loved so much. As he handed over a homemade Wurst plate for a patron he sternly stated, “Otherwise you’re gonna be miserable and nobody wants to be around somebody who’s miserable. Got it?!”
And since the Wood River Valley is home to the country’s first destination ski resort, it naturally offers all kinds of magical places to go outside to play no matter what season it is. While I’ll always love some of the other tourist-based communities I’ve had the blessing of calling home, like Taos, New Mexico, Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Bend, Oregon, and California’s Eastern Sierra, Sun Valley will always be my favorite.
"Sometimes you’ve got to play tourist, too, and remember why you live here.”
Fisher then told me to take the next week off, paid, of course, because that’s the kind of generous guy he was. He basically ordered me to take what we now call a “staycation”— although he’d probably never use that term, at least not without putting the word “damn” in front of it. Mark told me to pretend that I, much like many of the people I regularly served, was a “touron,” too. And that’s exactly what I did, specifically because Fisher (who had forearms like Popeye and was an acclaimed big game bow hunter) wasn't the type of guy who took “No” for an answer. 24 DISCOVER HAILEY & THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2023
For the next seven days I was lucky enough to enjoy the playground that we call home.
As I often hear whenever I’m shooting the breeze with locals, second homeowners, or folks making a sojourn to Sun Valley, there’s something magical about this place. Actually, there are numerous magical things: world-class skiing, hiking, mountain biking, fly fishing, food, art galleries, culture, mountain views, plus it’s a great place to raise kids.
But it’s easy to forget all this when you’re just another overworked ski-town local trying to survive. For all the beauty and glory, it can be tough to make it in most ski towns—living in paradise requires some sacrifices. It also requires some responsibility to treat it all with appreciation and help keep it special, healthy and pristine. That’s why Fisher’s order/advice to stop and literally smell the roses—or the fresh snow or the squirmy fish or the blooming sagebrush or my own sweat while hiking or biking in this breathtaking place—is the best I’ve ever been given. And one any ski-town local could make good use of: “Take a staycation!”

WOOD RIVER TRAILS COALITION Founded in 2011, the Wood River Trails Coalition (WRTC) has a pretty simple goal: To create, maintain and sustain the local network of trails for all users. On a typical year, the nonprofit WRTC will team up with hundreds of volunteers to maintain over 40 miles of trails and clear over 700 fallen logs and numerous miles of brush. They also raise funds to financially support the work of the Sawtooth National Forest, helping them maintain the 400+ miles of trails that surround the Wood River Valley.
“People, purpose, place. We want to give back to the community and to those organizations that are making positive impacts,” Rebecca said about supporting causes that advocate for things like providing access to bikes, protecting land for bikers and promoting all the positive impacts riding offers. A National Mountain Bike Hall-of-Famer and 7-Time World Champion in several different fields, including XC and Gravel Bike Racing, Master Class Nordic Skiing and Adventure Races, Rebecca’s also been a National Champ in Whitewater Rafting. She was even the star of the Emmy Award-winning documentary “Blood Road,” about her bike ride along the Ho Chi Minh Trail to visit her late father’s crash site during the Vietnam War. Despite all her accomplishments, there’s still no place she’d rather be than riding in the Wood River Valley. “There’s so much choice here. We really have great variety and access and an amazing riding community,” she said. “The experience here is really special.”
While the nonprofit is often associated with the biking community, the WRTC has supporting members of all kinds, from bikers to hikers to anglers. WRTC also partners with a large variety of nonprofits and governmental organizations to fulfill their mission. Thanks to the WRTC, popular local trails like Adams Gulch, Greenhorn, Prairie Creek and Toe of the Hill are kept in great shape. They also monitor bike user-days at over a dozen of the most popular trails in the area, like Chocolate Gulch, Forbidden Fruit and Pioneer Cabin. From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the WRTC tracks well over 10,000 rides annually. These stats can be used to help control crowding and parking concerns as well as help understand which trails will need support and maintenance. There’s no wonder why over 500 folks are members of the WRTC. Their work really helps connect our community to—and through—the world-class trail system we get to call our own.
One thing about Rebecca is obvious—whatever she puts her mind to she can accomplish. And that’s great news for gravel bike riders and people who call the Wood River Valley home. “You’re riding in my backyard and you are welcome here,” Rebecca said. “You just always want to remember to treat it and the people here with the respect and appreciation they deserve.”
WRTC is a trail stewardship organization working to create, maintain and sustain our trail network for all users.

hether you are new to birding or are a lister, there is no feeling like spotting a never-before-seen feathered friend. The experience of seeing a bird for the very first time is like hiking a mountain. When you start birding, you see new ones every day and things roll along quickly, but as you reach the pinnacle, it takes more and more effort. But not to fret, the high altitudes of Idaho can lend you a hand in reaching your birding goals, whatever they may be. In many ways, the high altitudes of Idaho are a birder’s paradise. Miles of wide-open space, forests, refreshing wetlands and marshes, and its pristine preserves attract a variety of birds. Often these unique birds are not included in the standard Idaho bird brochures since these species are not found at lower altitudes. But fortunately for us, we have a local expert to give us the inside scoop. Poo Wright-Pulliam, artist, local volunteer nature guide, bird-fanatic, and treasure, shares her years of experience about this special area.
FIND POO Learn more about Poo and her bird passion at poowright-pulliam.com or call (208)720-3903.
BIRDING Silver Creek Preserve, Poo’s personal favorite, never disappoints. With over 150 identified species, it’s really just a matter of looking up, over, or anywhere! Within the preserve, you’ll see Idaho’s beauties flying, perching, wading, and nesting. Throughout the preserve, among the songbirds and raptors can be found Bald and Golden Eagles, “gray ghost” Northern Harriers, and Western Meadowlarks. If you pay keen attention to the reeds, you may be rewarded with hearing, and possibly seeing, Sora, Virginia Rails, and American Bitterns. And in the twilight of dawn or dusk, a crepuscular Short-eared or Long-eared Owl may just be waiting to greet you on an obliging fence post. While glassing through the sagebrush, look for the Loggerhead Shrike in the summer, and the Northern Shrike in the winter. Also abundant in the winter months are Trumpeter Swans. During the warmer months, there are three varieties of hummingbirds that flit throughout the preserve. Yes, you read that correctly, THREE: The Calliope, Black-chinned, and Rufous. (There are actually four total in the area—when hiking in the mountains up north, you might just hear a Broad-tailed zing by!)
30 DISCOVER HAILEY & THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2023
Croy Creek Wetlands/Draper Preserve is an ideal home for an array of ducks, rails, and five different species of swallows: The Barn, Cliff, Northern Rough-winged, and Violet-green. The Draper Preserve Bow Bridge is a triumph of architecture and should not be missed. It leads directly onto a short boardwalk overseeing fresh wetlands sprinkled with waterfowl and soundtracked by music from Red-winged Blackbirds. During the winter, the Bohemian Waxwing flutters about, and during the summer, the Cedar Waxwing arrives in their place. Take Poo’s word for it, searching through the willows for Gray Catbirds, Bullock’s Orioles, Black-headed Grosbeaks, and Yellow and Wilson Warblers is an afternoon well spent. Centennial Marsh is perfect for those feeling a little more adventurous. Poo recommends the one-hour drive for a chance to spot a myriad of waterbirds. The Sandhill Crane, Black-necked Stilt, WhiteFaced Ibis, Wilson’s Phalarope, and Black Tern can all be found throughout the area. And, as a bonus, if you visit in late May to early June, you’ll be rewarded with the spectacular view of the widely anticipated camas lily bloom.
IDAHO’S
CASSIA CROSSBILL Formerly identified as a member of the Red Crossbill family, this stocky, large-headed finch was recently recognized as its own species. It’s Idaho’s first endemic bird, and it is named after the county it is found in— Cassia. The Cassia Crossbill is sedentary with a beak perfect for feeding on the seeds of Rocky Mountain lodgepole pine cones. The bird's scientific name, Loxia sinesciurus (meaning "without squirrels"), pinpoints a key reason for this bird's existence: The red squirrel, a primary crossbill competitor, is absent from the forests of the South Hills and Albion Mountains allowing the Cassia to continue subsisting on its sole food source. While that makes this crossbill very special, it also makes its survival uncertain. If the Cassia County lodgepole pine were ever to burn, which some of it already has, the Cassia Crossbill would cease to exist.
Throughout the Valley
During the winter months, as you travel throughout the Valley, keep an eye out for Black and Grey-crowned Rosy-Finch (there’s a large flock near Triumph), Clark’s Nutcracker, Red and White-winged Crossbill, and Steller’s Jay. At Howard Preserve, the dense tree trails along the Bigwood River lend themselves to listening for songbirds and watching for river ducks. Keep a lookout for Great Blue Herons, Eagles, and Redtailed Hawks. Heading up Trail Creek Road to the wetlands, there’s a good chance you will see ducks and possibly moose. Poo remembers with amazement when she once had a Greenwinged Teal, Cinnamon Teal, and Blue-winged Teal all in the view of her binoculars. At the base of River Run, along the bike path, numerous songbirds can be heard. And don’t forget to look for Pileated Woodpeckers and waxwings in the cottonwoods, and American Dippers in the rapids! Two other great spots for birding just outside the Wood River Valley are Carey Lake Wildlife Management Area and Magic Reservoir.
These are just a few places to get you going. They provide an excellent opportunity to start your birding experience or continue adding to your list. Either way, it’s a guarantee that you’ll enjoy the beautiful and unique experience of being in the high altitudes of Idaho.

ne of the biggest reasons why so many of us choose to live in or visit the Wood River Valley is because of our backyard. While we certainly love the culture and sense of community the four small towns of our Valley offer, it’s what’s just beyond town that really connects us all. The beauty of our part of the Northern Rockies and the playground it is home to are tough to top. Whether you like hiking, skiing or mountain biking, fishing, photography, plein air painting or simply witnessing the wonders of nature with your kids or grandkids, the Wood River Valley is a magical place. That’s because it’s easy to enjoy all these things and much more simply by heading out into our backyard. To help you make the most out of all the Wood River Valley has to offer, here’s a rundown of some of our favorite backyard adventures.
PHOTO CAROL WALLER
HIKING Out the Backdoor
If you love to hike, there are endless hiking options leading from every community in the Wood River Valley—from short, dogand family-friendly strolls like the Howard Preserve in Bellevue or the Sellgren Trail in Ketchum, to long jaunts into the mountains like Quigley Canyon in Hailey or Trail Creek just beyond Sun Valley. Easy: Hailey Greenway runs along the Big Wood River and is a perfect place for youngsters to take a hike. One of the most popular places to walk dogs or hit the river for some fishing, the Greenway runs from the Wood River Land Trust’s Draper Wood River Preserve just off Bullion Street in Hailey, down through the Colorado Gulch Preserve off Broadford Road. Variable: Adams Gulch may be the most popular hiking (and dog walking) spot in the Wood River Valley. Nestled in the tree-covered hills just north of Ketchum, Adams Gulch offers a variety of hiking options, with all kinds of loops for any energy level. If you don’t mind crossing paths with people and pets, this is the perfect hiking spot for you.
Challenging: Bald Mountain Trail covers what is best known during the winter as the Sun Valley Ski Area. With stunning views of the surrounding mountains and access options that include a gondola ride, the Bald Mountain Trail is a must for any hiking fan. It isn’t an easy hike, however, as the trail covers 3,200 vertical feet in five miles. That’s why some folks ride the gondola up and then hike back down. Variable: Carbonate is a locals' favorite. Hikers can opt for either the butt-kicking steep ascent that climbs 1,300 feet in 0.9 miles or the casual meandering switchback trail that reaches the top in 2.4 miles. Either way, this local staple provides sweeping vistas from Hailey and views all the way to Bald Mountain in the north.

HIKING Places to Stay
Stanley The quaint and rustic town of Stanley is busiest in the summer, when it becomes a hub for bikers, hikers and rafters. The greater Stanley area is home to more than a dozen hotels, lodges and rental options as well as countless camping choices. Stanley is also home to more than a dozen restaurants and bars, although most of them are only open during the warmweather months.
Short Drives
Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve offers up some of the most unique terrain in the country, making it a popular spot for day hikes.
For more information about dining or lodging in Stanley, contact the Stanley Chamber of Commerce at StanleyCC.org or call (208) 774-3411
Located just over an hour’s drive southeast of the Wood River Valley, Craters of the Moon is an island of lava flows and cinder cones sprawled out in the midst of the “Sagebrush Sea,” as they call the high desert of southern Idaho. Formed during volcanic eruptions over 15,000 years ago, the monument was signed into order by President Calvin Coolidge in 1923. In 1969, Apollo 14 astronauts came to train for their moonwalk by hiking around Craters.
Smiley Creek Smiley Creek Lodge welcomes you with a variety of cozy accommodations from brand new luxury tiny homes, to cabins, yurts, tent sites, and full-hookup RV sites.
Craters of the Moon offers eight hikes from short strolls to an 8-mile trek. It also offers a unique snowshoeing option in the winter. The Monument is open year-round and its Visitor Center is open daily.
For more information visit smileycreeklodge.com or call (208) 774-3547
For more information about Craters of the Moon, go to the National Parks Service page at www.nps.gov/crmo or call (208) 527-1300.
Short Drives
Sawtooth Valley The Sawtooth Valley is considered one of the most beautiful mountain valleys on the planet. “Just over the hill,” as most locals say, from the Wood River Valley, the Sawtooth Valley is another short drive that is full of hiking, fishing, mountain biking and water-related fun. After crossing Galena Summit—and stopping to take a photo at the Scenic Overlook—the Sawtooth Valley is sprinkled with a series of high mountain lakes. Redfish Lake is the most famous of the drive-to lakes and is named after the once prolific salmon that return some 900 miles from the sea to spawn each year. The Sawtooth Fish Hatchery, located right along Scenic Highway 75, is a great place to see salmon and steelhead. Endless hiking options can be found along both sides of the highway, especially if you head into the Sawtooth Mountains.

MTN. BIKING Out the Backdoor
Sun Valley may have been founded on skiing, but it’s becoming known as a mountain biking mecca. The entire area is full of good dirt, a great variety of terrain and over 400 miles of single track to explore. There are also plenty of fun and unique rides just a short drive away at places like Fisher Creek, but if you love to ride, there’s really no reason to leave the backyard. Bald Mountain Once the snow melts, Bald Mountain opens for the mountain biking business— and business couldn’t be better. Lift access riding on Baldy is about as much fun as you can have on two wheels. From the new flow trails to miles of downhill track, riding Sun Valley is tough to top. Adams Gulch Adams Gulch just north of Ketchum and Carbonate Mountain just across the river from Hailey are two of the most popular places to ride, but there are great trails and plenty of old dirt roads into the mountains to explore throughout the Valley. Fatbike Phenomenon There used to come a time each fall when we’d all put our bikes away for the season and grab our skis. But now we just swap out our road or mountain bike for a fatbike. With tires twice as big as a normal mountain bike, fatbikes are good in snowy and slushy conditions. Fatbikes have actually been around for well over a decade, but they’ve really begun to take off in popularity over the last few years. With the Wood River Trail offering 20 miles of groomed paths perfect for fatbiking, going for a bike ride during the winter no longer sounds like a nutty idea. Pump Tracks Ketchum Bike Park (700 2nd Ave.): A great pump park, grassy rest areas, shade tree and shrub plantings, and bench and bleacher seating. Trail Park & Track (Quigley Canyon): Made of dirt, clay rollers and berms, a pump track offers a great way for kids of all ages to get active, get a core workout and develop great off-road biking skills.
Adaptive Mountain Biking Trail – Adams Gulch Forbidden Fruit is a one-way, mountain-bike-only flow trail. It is located in the lower end of Eve's Gulch, and accessed off the Eve Gulch Trail portion of the 146 Trail. The trail starts with 300 ft. of climbing that puts you at the top of the 'flow' portion of the trail. Fruit features big berm-turns and large jumps with multiple roller sections that allow you to test your appetite for air. Areas of the trail may contain loose gravel or downed trees that have come onto the trail since its last round of maintenance. It is always a good idea to start with a slow lap; rolling down the trail to inspect its condition and to know what to expect on your next lap.

GRINDING What is Gravel Grinding?
Just Right Off-Road Adventure More off-road adventure than a pavement ride, gravel-grind riding is a unique mix of on and off-road riding, sometimes with some single track that allows you to cover miles and see incredible off-road Idaho areas. Underground races and organized events, such as Rebecca’s Private Idaho, have cemented the concept of gravel-grind riding to all who love bike adventures. Today, purpose-built gravel bikes are sturdy, but designed for off-pavement use, with good tires, a slightly more upright position, longer wheel base and disk brakes. Gravelgrinder bikes bring the best of both worlds – from smooth single track to epic road rides – into the same outing. Pick up the full Travels on Gravel map with all 12 rides in Hailey & South Idaho at the Hailey Welcome Center or download at haileyidaho.com/gravel
Our Favorite Travels on Gravel be a left turn onto Poverty Flats Road. This 10 - Easy - Quigley Loop Trail/Rd. 4.2 miles. 642’ elevation gain. About 45 minutes to 1.5 hours.
A perfect beginner or quick gravel ride, especially good for young children. Start at the trailhead on Quigley Road, just past the end of the pavement. Ride out on the single-track trail to the pond and loop back on the other side of Quigley Canyon until the trail crosses the field and returns to the trailhead on Quigley Road. Or ride the road out to the pond and return on the trail; it’s easier descending on the trail. 1B - Moderate - Classic Rock Creek to Poverty Flats Loop 35 miles. 1,500’ elevation gain. Expect 2-1/2 to 3/1/2 hours.
turn is easy to miss, but marked by a couple of galvanized storage tanks. Continue on Poverty Flats Road on rolling terrain followed by a 2.3-mile climb and fast descent to Glendale Road. Continue on Glendale Road, crossing Highway 75. Take a right turn just before Bellevue Farms subdivision and follow around to the south and then connect with Gannett Road. Head back to Hailey via the bike path starting in Bellevue or alternately on Broadford Road. 7 - Difficult - Muldoon Canyon A “big” ride with lots of vertical. 16 miles. 1,500’ elevation gain. About 2-3 hours.
This out-and-back ride on a gravel road is only lightly traveled but rough in places. It follows Seamans Gulch in a narrow shady This ride is a classic tour of the west Hailey canyon until it starts the climb to Muldoon gravel. It is best ridden counter-clockwise Summit. Start from Bellevue on Muldoon and rides in reverse of some of the same Road and pass turnoffs to Martin Canyon roads in the Travels on Gravel map. Start in on the left, and to Sharps Canyon on the Hailey and head west on Croy Creek Road. right (see separate rides for those) until you At about 5 miles, turn left on View Road/ start climbing in an open basin. At the Rock Creek Road (at Rock Creek Ranch summit you can stop and enjoy views of the sign). At approximately 10 miles, there will Pioneer mountains before descending.

FISHING Out the Backdoor
BIG WOOD RIVER The Big Wood River carves its way through the Valley it’s named for. That’s why no matter where you are in the Wood River Valley, you’re never far from the river. The Big Wood offers ample access throughout most of its 60-mile run to Magic Reservoir. Early spring is the only time the river is completely closed to fishing. Meanwhile, the other three seasons on the Big Wood make for some pretty idyllic alpine fishing. The freestone river is full of trout and gorgeous views that make you feel a lot farther away from civilization than you are.

FISHING Short Drives
Fly Fishing Highway Fishing is a big part of the appeal of our little neck of the Northern Rockies. Part of the “Fly Fishing Highway,” as they call Highway 20, even rolls right through the southern section of Blaine County. The two-lane highway is a short drive from Hailey or Ketchum and passes the legendary waters of Silver Creek. Silver Creek Preserve When The Nature Conservancy first preserved Silver Creek back in 1976, it became a watershed moment in spring creek and fisheries conservation. It was really the first conservation project of its kind anywhere, and its success has inspired numerous such projects around the world. That’s one of the reasons why fishing the gin-clear waters of Silver Creek is such a special event in any angler’s life—even when you’re as lucky as we locals are to fish it all the time. There’s never a bad day on Silver Creek, because even though the fishing isn’t easy, it’s always a rewarding experience.
Magic Reservoir It’s tough not to like a place called Magic Reservoir. The largest manmade lake in the area has several access points and is popular for bait, lure and fly fishing during the warmer months and ice fishing in the winter. Fed by the Big Wood River, when Magic Reservoir is full it covers nearly 4,000 acres and five miles of highdesert terrain. Besides fishing, Magic is a popular spot for waterskiers and stand-up paddleboarding. While trout—and big ones at that—are caught with regularity at both Silver Creek and Magic Reservoir, Magic is also one of the best places around to catch bass.
Places to Stay
SILVER CREEK HOTEL Silver Creek Hotel in Bellevue is the closest lodging. Other quality nearby options include the Fairfield Inn, AmericInn, Airport Inn. The Limelight Hotel in Ketchum is pet friendly and there is a variety of options at the Sun Valley Resort. Every hotel mentioned offers pools and/or hot tubs. There is also a variety of camping options by Silver Creek, including in Picabo and at the Hayspur Fish Hatchery and Point of Rocks recreation area.
40 DISCOVER HAILEY & THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2023
Making its way from the snowy mountains above Sun Valley, Trail Creek offers some pretty sweet small-stream fishing. The chilly waters of the creek get stocked often during the height of the fishing season. Trail Creek also passes by the Hemingway Memorial, adding another attraction to spending some time exploring the small mountain stream.
FISHING GEAR Two of the best in the fishing business, Silver Creek Outfitters and Lost River Outfitters, can be found on Main Street in Ketchum. They both offer full-service tackle shops and knowledgeable staffs. They also offer a variety of guided fishing experiences, from full to half days, for one person or for the whole family. One trip on the water and you’ll see why Sun Valley has long been known for offering some of the best fishing guides in the country. Lost River Outfitters 371 N. SKIING Sun Valley is not only home to America’s first destination ski resort, we’re also home to the first ski lift. You can even see its remnants at Proctor Mountain, just east of the resort. We’re awfully proud of our skiing history around here, and for good reason. From Sun Valley’s celebrityfilled start in 1936 to officially being named “Nordic Town USA” a few years ago, skiing is part of the foundation of our community. One of the biggest reasons skiing is so big around here is that we offer something for everyone. Maybe you like Black Diamond bump runs or carving endless slalom turns on Baldy. Perhaps playing in the terrain parks or learning to ski or board on Dollar is more you’re style. Maybe you like to Nordic or cross-country ski on our more than 100 miles of regular groomed trails. Or maybe you love to earn your turns and hit the backcountry and carve tracks along Galena Summit. Even if a simple snowshoe followed by a cup of hot cocoa is you’re style, we’ve got you covered there, too. Baldy Baldy, also referred to as the Sun Valley Ski Resort, offers 100 runs and 3,400 vertical feet of alpine skiing. Baldy is well known for its consistent snow (averaging nearly 20 feet each ski season) and groomed runs, which are some of the best in the world thanks to the nation’s finest snowmaking system. Dollar Mountain Dollar Mountain is located on the other side of Ketchum from Baldy. Offering 22 runs and nearly 1,000 feet of vertical, Dollar is home to a variety
Sturtevants Warm Springs 215 Picabo St., Ketchum (Right at the base of Warm Springs)
(208) 726-SKIS (7547) of terrain parks that get changed throughout the season. It also offers a Magic Carpet and plenty of runs for those new to skiing. Rotarun Rotarun is the “little mountain with the big heart” in Hailey. Skiing and riding is available on weekends at the 475-foot-high ski hill. The ticket price to ride the J-bar is a simple donation to the Sun Valley Ski Education Foundation, which runs Rotarun and offers learn-to-ski programs there for elementary school kids. Sun Valley Heli-Ski Most people don’t realize that Sun Valley Heli-Ski was issued the first U.S. Forest Service heli-ski permit in 1966 and is still lucky enough to lay claim to the largest permit in the lower 48 states. Their skiable terrain includes three ranges (Smoky, Boulder and Pioneer mountains) and covers more than 750,000 acres. Nordic Trails Nordic skiing in the Wood River Valley is as good as it gets. From Quigley Canyon in Hailey, following the groomed Wood River Trail (which also serves as the bike path) over to Sun Valley Resort’s Nordic Center and then up through the Sawtooth National Recreational Area to Galena Lodge, you can find some of the best crosscountry and skate skiing in America. Soldier Mountain Soldier Mountain is located in the Sawtooth National Forest just north of Fairfield. The mountain is great for families, offers 36 runs and cat skiing that gives adventurers access to Smoky Dome, the highest peak in the Soldier Mountains.

Hailey Ice
For more than a decade, Hailey Ice was just a dream. But thanks to the tireless work of an impassioned group of locals and our community’s generosity, what was once only a dream has become a reality. Hailey has been home to a world-class ice rink for six years now and things have turned out even better than expected. “It has been amazing," said Sarah Benson, executive director for Hailey Ice. “On one hand, it has met our expectations. On the other, it has exceeded them.” Hailey Ice is located on Main Street in Hailey and is open from late September through mid-March. It offers public skating, stick-andpuck, open hockey and youth tournaments throughout the season and is the home of the Sun Valley Suns of the Black Diamond Hockey League. For more information, go to www.haileyice.org or call (208) 928-4905.

EXCITING CHANGES FOR THE SAGE SCHOOL
A new location for students to break free from the traditional path. BY BRENNA ELLIS

he goal of The Sage School is clear: provide intentional, experiential education that connects students to themselves, the community, and nature. Since 2009 The Sage School has provided a unique alternative for Wood River Valley students in grades 6-12. This year, with the move to a new learning environment, they are excited to provide students with an unforgettable and enriching experience. After years of dreaming about what the new home would mean to their community, The Sage School has officially settled into its new location in Quigley Canyon. It’s incredible that a school that started with a dozen kids in what is now The Advocates Thrift Store would grow to over 90 students and have Quigley to call home. “To say that we are humbled by moving from that space to the former Hailey Nursery space to this space is profound," says Chris McAvoy, co-founder and assistant head of the School. "We are grateful to the community, the families and this school that have made it all possible.”
As of mid-December, students and faculty have embraced this new location and all of the amazing things it has to offer as they grow. In its new home, The Sage Schools' mission of Self-PlaceCommunity feels even stronger. The location exemplifies everything that founders Harry Weekes and Chris McAvoy strive to impart on their students. Located on the east side of Hailey, the new Sage School is close to town, yet tucked into the foothills. From this new vantage, students and faculty are much more immersed in the natural environment. From watching coyotes lope across the hillsides above the school, to observing the larks emerge in the spring, it’s all happening in and around campus. In this new, beautiful location, Sage School students' lived realities reflect what is taught in their classrooms. It’s easy for students to understand the connection between humans and the natural environment when they experience it firsthand every day. THE CHAMBER GUIDE 2023 45
Staying true to The Sage School’s commitment to the community, the new barn on campus provides a variety of ways to give back. The barn space is large enough to comfortably hold over 100 people, and serve as a gathering space for community nonprofits, book clubs, summer programs, and more. Through offering the space to the Wood River community, school founder Harry Weekes says, “We are a school. Our primary goal is educating. This facility allows us to involve our students in the community." On many levels, this new space actively shows the students how they are members of the greater community. Equipped with a commercial kitchen, the barn also allows students to learn and apply a variety of culinary skills. They can host cooking classes or donate cooked goods to local nonprofits. The kitchen affords new opportunities for hosting events and offers members of the community an amazing venue should they need it for their own businesses. The Sage School’s new home is not only an exciting development for its students and faculty, but also for our community at large. The kitchen, barn, and all the state-of-the-art facilities constructed on the new campus are an asset for all of us, and can help us build connections with each other as well as the environment in which it is built.

eople often wonder what distinguishes the Wood River Valley from all the other great mountain resort communities in the country. The answer is pretty simple: It’s our world-class arts and cultural scene.
Yes, we have some of the best hiking, mountain biking and skiing trails on the planet and lots of mouth-watering places to eat, drink and be merry. But what really makes us special is our passion and support for the arts. And Ballet Sun Valley is the perfect example. Bob Smelick was the founder of Ballet Sun Valley. The Bay Area native had a second home in Ketchum for 30 years. In an interview in 2019, Bob explained that he’d always felt very connected to the community and that it was a special place for him.

Thanks to support from local groups like Sun Valley Resort, Footlight Dance Centre, the Limelight Hotel, and others, the nonprofit has been fulfilling its mission ever since. Since its inception, Ballet Sun Valley performances have featured works from some of ballet’s best and most accomplished choreographers, as well as featuring world-class dancers from the American Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, San Francisco Ballet, and The Paris Opera Ballet, among others. “These are more like the types of performances you’d see at places like The Kennedy Center or Sadler’s Wells in London,” Bob said, sharing his infamous passion for life and the arts. “It’s pretty spectacular and a real gift to the community.”

Nearly 600 folks are expected to enjoy trotting on Thanksgiving Day in downtown Hailey, along the Big Wood River and through the Wood River Land Trust’s beautiful Draper Wood River Preserve. The Turkey Trot starts at 10:00 a.m. at Sturtevants in Hailey, located at 1 West Carbonate Street.

ELOPEMENTS AN INTIMATE ADVENTURE BY BRENNA ELLIS
PHOTOS BY AMANDA RENÉ
The Wood River Valley and Sun Valley have long been traditional wedding destinations. The beautiful peaks, sprawling meadows, and mountain lakes all create a memorable and romantic backdrop. But, if tradition and planning a 150-person wedding makes you shudder, we have the perfect option for you. Elope! In the past, we’d only hear about elopement as some kind of run-away, forbidden love story. You can leave that storyline in the past. These days, elopements are for everyone. If you live in, or visit the Wood River Valley, chances are you feel most at home in nature. An elopement is a perfect opportunity to embrace your love for the outdoors, save some serious cash, and get to create the experience that YOU dream of. Planning an elopement doesn’t differ greatly from that of a traditional wedding, but it does simplify things. You’ll likely still
need the basics: a location, food, clothing, and flowers…but in the end, it’s really up to you! That’s the key to all things elopement; you get to plan entirely for your personal desires and vision. If you’d rather get married in hiking shorts and trail shoes, more power to you, this is your day! There are no rules for elopements, but there are a few details that may be helpful to consider. We sat down with one couple who chose to elope and the photographer that was there to capture it all. Local adventure elopement expert Amanda René Photography, and bride Carrie gave us amazing recommendations, tips, and details to think about for an elopement of your own. Picking your location is one of the most important steps. You’ll want to consider how many people will be in the group, whether you are fit enough to reach the location, and will you need permits. hey don’t call this place Sun Valley for nothing. Our little slice of “IdaHome” averages over 300 days of sunshine a year. We do our best to make the most out of all this sunshine by playing and partying hard, which is why we have many sweet patios and decks to enjoy our après adventures. Here’s a rundown of some of our favorites. KETCHUM The terrace at The Grill at Knob Hill Inn is a gardener’s delight, ideal for some higher-level dining. Meanwhile, the patio at Grumpy’s offers views of Baldy, delightfully greasy burgers and their legendary schooners of beer. Sawtooth Brewery and Lefty’s both offer small decks and big beers. Bigwood Bread's patio is the perfect place for lunch and some of their hand-made artisan breads and treats. The rooftop decks at the Sawtooth Club and Sun Valley Wine Company offer elevated and exceptionally tasty experiences. Despo's serves outstanding Mexican food at their newly remodeled deck in the heart of town, while the spacious back patio of the Limelight Hotel is tough to top for views, tasty treats and live music during the high seasons. The most famous deck in Ketchum can be found atop the Warfield Distillery & Brewery. The tasty beers and spirits made on the lower level match the views from the rooftop deck.

SUN VALLEY Outdoor dining and world-class fare can be found everywhere you go around Sun Valley. The Lodge offers patios at both Gretchen’s and the Duchin Lounge. The Inn has patio seating at the Ram. The Sun Valley Club’s multi-tiered deck offers impressive views of the Trail Creek Golf Course with Baldy and Dollar mountains in the backdrop. HAILEY Hailey is a very bike-friendly community and Main Street is lined with places to park your bike and enjoy some outdoor dining. Look no further than the popular patio at the Power House Pub & Bike Shop. The bicycle bar has an impressive Europeanheavy beer selection and a small but tasty menu. If you want action right in the heart of town, the Mint has a great outdoor seating where you'll feel like you're in the center of of Hailey's local life. The patio at Wiseguy Pizza Pie is the perfect place to grab a cold one and a slice. Sun Valley Brewery serves up handcrafted ales, big meals and a nice view of Della Mountain as well as regular live music. Sawtooth Brewery has a small deck, but often opens up the brewhouse doors so live bands have a place to play, leaving plenty of room for dancing. The Wicked Spud is the place to be most
Wednesdays when they host live music in support of local nonprofit organizations. DaVinci’s on Bullion Street and Dang’s Thai Cuisine & Sushi Bar on Main each have a small deck, but serve up big flavors, perfect for fans of authentic Italian or Asian meals, respectively. CK’s Real Food has long served not only some of the best food in Idaho, but its patio is one of the prettiest. BELLEVUE The back deck at Mahoney’s is the place to be in Bellevue for burgers, brews and views of the river. They also have live music on Thursday nights during the summer. The small decks at Mama Inéz and The Cutthroat Club are also great locations to soak up some rays on sunny days.
COFFEE SPOTS There are also lots of nice places to start your day with some outdoor breakfast refreshments. The large patio at Black Owl Coffee in Hailey is a locals’ favorite and The Coffee House also has a small deck. Hailey Coffee Company and Java both offer outdoor seating at their locations in Hailey and Ketchum and the summer flowerbeds besides the Konditorei’s patio in the Sun Valley Village are some of the nicest around. Maude's in west Ketchum has nice outdoor seating to enjoy the rays. Ashley's Coffee Corner on main street in Bellevue has a nice little patio out front where you can enjoy a great cup of coffee and watch the world hustle by, Idaho style.

THE PERFECT LOCATION FOR FUN BY MIKE MCKENNA

There’s an old saying that three of the most important things in real estate are “location, location, location.” This is especially true when it comes to selecting a place to stay while on vacation. Having an idyllic location is just one of the reasons why Hotel Ketchum gets great reviews on all the major travel websites. Located smack dab in the heart of downtown Ketchum makes them the perfect home base for inspired experiences throughout the Wood River Valley. Hotel Ketchum opened in 2017 and was “built for people who want to get as much out of their days as they do their nights.” The boutique hotel and its modern, yet relaxed style, makes it a great place to stay and play. There are literally dozens of terrific places to dine and shop just outside their front door. An impressive variety of galleries and museums are also just short strolls from the hotel. The world-famous slopes of Sun Valley and world-class fly fishing on the Big Wood River are also close by, while there’s also easy access to the endless hiking and mountain biking options the Wood River Valley has to offer. “The location is awesome,” said Carla Rey, the Hotel Manager for Hotel Ketchum. “You can walk to everything in Ketchum and the hotel is easy to find, right in the middle of town. The views of Baldy and the surrounding mountains are pretty nice, too.” Besides their sweet spot in Idaho’s most famous resort community, Carla explained that there are lots of reasons people love staying at Hotel Ketchum. They have a variety of clean, modern and comfortable rooms. Hotel Ketchum offers everything from traditional hotel rooms to suites to fireplace and balcony rooms with kings or double queen 78 DISCOVER HAILEY & THE WOOD RIVER VALLEY 2023
beds. They offer ADA-accessible rooms and they’re pet friendly. Hotel Ketchum stays also include their popular complimentary breakfast. They have something to offer every guest, from individual business trips to family getaways. As for recreation, something the Woo River Valley is famous for, Hotel Ketchum has an outdoor pool and hot tub as well as a fitness room. Black Tie Skis is located on the property and rents both skis in the winter and bikes during the warmer months. Guests can even enjoy the use of the hotel’s complimentary e-bikes. The Pasture is the name of Hotel Ketchum’s outdoor patio, which offers a fire pit, comfy furniture and great views of the mountains. The popular Barrio 75 restaurant is located on the north side of the hotel, while the gorgeous Memory Park and its fun splash pad adorn the south side of the hotel. If you’re looking for a great location to stay in the Wood River Valley, Hotel Ketchum is tough to top. But its sweet location is just one of the reasons that makes a stay there so special.

he South Valley has continued its astounding run of success through 2022 and into 2023. Though the rapid rise in interest rates and corresponding inflation have led to some uncertainty in markets outside of our valley, Hailey has continued to see an active commercial real estate market. The start of 2023 has seen solid sale and leasing activity, with underlying demand for residential and commercial properties holding strong. The problem has been feeding this demand with an adequate supply, especially in residential! Indicative of the economic activity in Hailey, the City of Hailey LOT (Local Option Tax) collections for 2022 came in at a record $937,423. This eclipses the all-time LOT collection record set just last year by almost 15%. In spite of some national level economic uncertainty, Hailey continues to see record tourism and visitation demand. Multifamily Housing Activity:

2020 and 2021 saw an average of almost 131 units approved each year – that’s a 237% increase over the 2016-2019 average. Though a high level of additional approvals were granted through 2022, this still has not met the valley’s voracious appetite for workforce housing, although many of the units approved in the past three years are now beginning to hit the market. There are more projects on the horizon in Hailey and Bellevue with ARCH, the Wood River Valley Community Housing Trust, Blaine County School District, North Blaine County Fire District, and a number of communityminded local investors making material investments to ‘move the needle’ on housing solutions. Just take a drive down Hailey’s River Street and see for yourself. continued on page 86

If you have tried to find office or retail space in the South Valley, you know the inventory is still close to zero. Rents have increased, in some cases dramatically, but still have not reached a level at which developers are incentivized to build new product. However, this has not discouraged investors from buying existing properties, with Main Street in Hailey seeing strong activity. The Liberty Theater was listed for sale, received three offers the first day, and was under contract for purchase within four days. In an endearing show of town pride, all the offers received for The Liberty envisioned preserving some similar use, or at least the front facade of the building as a Hailey Landmark for future generations. Our office sold the Marketron building on River Street (re-named the Sawtooth Business Center). The property was under contract within 10 days of listing. It didn’t take long to lease most of the office space in the 17,000-squrefoot building. The historic Mint restaurant/bar/nightclub on Main Street is also listed for sale and is under contract for purchase. Some of the South Valley’s other bedrock businesses are under contract for purchase as well, including South Valley Pizzeria and the Silver Dollar Saloon. After five very successful years, the owners of Tundra restaurant, also on Main Street in Hailey, are ready to start a new venture and sell the operation as a turn-key restaurant! All this activity is a real indicator of the substantial commercial interest in Hailey. Eccles “Flying Hat” Ranch Update: Located just south of the airport, the east side of the ranch will be annexed by both Hailey AND Bellevue, split essentially down the middle by the two cities, with the Blaine County Recreation District receiving land for a recreation facility and sporting fields straddling the border between the two towns. When the development comes together, we can expect a well-thought-out community with the full range of property types – multi & single-family housing, workforce housing, light industrial/shop/warehouse, and a limited number of neighborhood office/retail properties. The cautiously positive local economic trends of the past year are likely to continue through 2023, even as the Federal Reserve works to keep inflation at bay without disrupting the broader economy. Fortunately, our ‘bubble’ here does not always follow the national average—there is not much average about our communities. Thanks to Matt Gelso, an integral part of the Kenny-Bogue Team, for helping put together this piece. Paul Kenny, Matt Bogue, and Matt Gelso have a combined 48 years of experience with commercial real estate sales, leasing, investments, and development in the Wood River Valley.

What's your Sun Valley story? I am a fifth-generation local. My family were original Ketchum homesteaders. I admire their resilience and creativity as mountain life was tough in the 1800s. They did a little of everything from mining to agriculture. Much like today in our valley, community was central to their life.

How did you get into real estate? My mother is a life-long Wood River Valley real estate broker and continues to serve as my inspiration. Over the past 20+ years in the business, I have had the good fortune to be mentored by several of the area's top real estate brokers. They taught me to build a strong network of local experts to ensure a smooth transaction to closing and beyond.

How does next year look for our local markets? Looking forward for the next year in real estate, our fundamentals are sound. I believe demand will remain strong and low inventory will persist, resulting in price increases. Buyers will adjust to higher interest rates and may have to reset expectations based on affordability.

Is the WRV still a good real estate investment? New residents have just begun to share the area with family and friends. I feel it is only a matter of time until we see a second wave of buyers from our recent boom. The bottom line is the Wood River Valley is a great place to own a home and buyers will continue to seek us out. Tips? Be prepared to act quickly when you find a property you like. We are still in a competitive market with many properties attracting more than one buyer. Have an open mind about the different areas and neighborhoods as they are all compelling and present unique benefits.

Where do I begin? The natural beauty, world-class skiing, cultural offerings, amazing schools, low-crime rate, numerous nonprofits, unlimited recreation … it’s all so amazing. I think our most valuable attribute is having an authentic community. My clients often reflect, “Everyone is so friendly here,” and it’s true. The people are what make the Wood River Valley a treasured place to live and visit.
