SUMMER 2013 THE CABBAGE PATCH SETTLEMENT HOUSE

It was an honest question from a 12-year-old boy who didn’t think he was ever going to amount to much. For a year, he had struggled to get along with other children his age at school and at The Cabbage Patch. Sometimes he would act out to get attention. Other days, he walked in the door with a bad attitude. But staff members and volunteers knew that life at home was not always easy for him. Every day, the boy was greeted by volunteers and staff who took an honest interest in him: they worked to help him adjust his behavior, they helped him play well with other children as part of a team during group games in the gym, and they helped him with his homework when he was struggling with an assignment. One day, astounded, he asked Mr. Raz: “Why do you care about me so much?” Mr. Raz responded with a big smile: “Because I just do.” Over the last year, the boy changed his behavior drastically, adopted a good attitude and decided to set goals for himself. He is on the honor roll at school, active on the track team, and looking forward to starting his first year of high school this fall.

RECREATION/YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

This summer, parents and friends were amazed when tiny little Anna* walked to the middle of the stage and clearly and confidently said her lines in front of a packed audience of parents, siblings, and friends from The Cabbage Patch. “She is usually so shy!” her mother said.

Thanks to partnerships with local organizations like ArtsReach & The Fund

Now, Anna is 10 years old and blossoming into a good little actress in the Performing Arts Program at The Cabbage Patch. This summer, she’s played a lead role in several performances made possible through the summer camp program. The audience loves her, and when she is standing on stage, she is truly radiant.

for The Arts in addition to support from donors like you, The Cabbage Patch is able to provide performing arts programs and camps to at-risk children throughout the year.

“I like that plays at The Cabbage Patch allow you to act in front of people you know,” she said. “I’ve learned that if you stay confident and focused, you can get a lot accomplished.” *Names have been changed to protect the privacy of those we serve.

Children and youth in the Perfoming Arts Day Camp perfomed five fairytales and nursery rhymes, including The Three Little Pigs and The Little Mermaid, for family, friends and staff.

RECREATION/YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

“It was March 1st, and it was COLD! Snow was falling from the sky all morning. But that didn’t stop me and six of my friends from meeting at The Cabbage Patch to head down to the river and practice canoeing! We were all preparing for the High Adventure trip we were going to take during spring break, and a day of practice couldn’t be missed! Sure, it was cold. But the folks at The Cabbage Patch have taught all of us a lot about sticking with things and giving it your best. We all encouraged each other to keep going, and we had a great time! All our hard work paid off this spring when we canoed 60 miles on the Current River and biked more than 75 miles near the trail. I’ll never forget that day in the snow, or the memories I made on that trip!”

The summer recreation program at The Cabbage Patch provides children and youth with nine weeks of activitypacked opportunities. These camps are made possible through the generous donations from supporters like you.

EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

“When I walked into Holladay Hall that night — I couldn’t believe my eyes! There were almost 300 books spread out over the tables — and Ms. Mayghin told me that I could take as many as I wanted! So — I grabbed as many books as I could! My mom asked if I was sure I needed all of them. ‘Well yeah!’ I told her. ‘Miss Kanisha told me books are food for your brain — and mine is starving!’ Everyone laughed a little, but I was serious! I’ve been reading those books every night. My mom says I’m a bookworm — but I don’t mind. I just love to read!”

On this same evening, several parents commented that books were a luxury their families could not otherwise afford. Some of them were able to take books to friends and family. One mother picked up a Bible and smiled, explaining she had lost hers during a recent move and hadn’t been able to purchase another one.

COUNSELING & FAMILY SERVICES

In June, volunteers from Yum! Brands transformed the courtyard at The Cabbage Patch Settlement House into a “kitchen” fully equipped for a truly unique cooking challenge. The evening provided a memorable, educational, and enriching experience for families enrolled in The Patch Parents program. During the months leading up to the event, the Yum! volunteers worked closely with staff at The Cabbage Patch to plan, design, and execute this evening for twelve families as part of Yum!’s Hunger to Hope Challenge. Because many families who come to The Cabbage Patch face financial restrictions and often rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to provide food for their families, the volunteers used SNAP guidelines and the Women, Infants, & Children (WIC) food list to compile baskets of staple foods that most parents would have at home or be able to easily access. Using these ingredients—which included proteins, veggies, fruits, and dry goods — volunteers helped families prepare a healthy meal in just 45 minutes. Overall, the exercise allowed the families to bond with each other while better understanding how to create nutritious, sustaining meals at home.

“Our kitchen at home is very small and my five children can’t often help out very much when I’m cooking,” said one single mother of five children. “At the meeting, all of the kids could participate because we were outside and had so much space. The kids had fun getting all of the ingredients, and the YUM! volunteers really helped me by looking after the children while I cooked. The kids talked about the meeting for days after it took place. Every time I see a parent who was there we still talk about it.”

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT Volunteer opportunities at The Cabbage Patch take many forms: but at the core of our Volunteer Program is the understanding that Ally Schamaun, a University of Louisville graduate with a degree in studio art, has used her passion to teach kids at The Cabbage Patch through art and volunteering. Ally first began volunteering in Educational Opportunities and later moved to the Art Program, because it was a natural fit for her talents and interests. “I like working with the kids and seeing their reaction when they catch on,” she said. “I have a lot of favorite things about The Cabbage Patch. There is so much culture and history. The kids start so young and grow up here.” Ally also spent her summer helping with camps at The Cabbage Patch, including Secret Garden Day Camp, Young Chef Day Camp, Horse Day Camp, Wilderness Women Day Camp, Sugar and Spice Day Camp, Art Day Camp, Expressions of Me, and Around the World Day Camp. From the art room to summer camps to helping with the Seed To Table, Ally has been a great asset to The Cabbage Patch. “Ally is willing to go the extra mile to help out when she is needed,” Pam Satterly, The Patch’s Volunteer Coordinator said. “She jumped right in and filled in gaps where extra help was necessary. She stayed way past closing time to help set up the spring Art Show. And children really like her! “

ANNUAL CELEBRATION LUNCHEON

The Annual Celebration Luncheon brought friends of The Cabbage Patch together on June 12th to celebrate the profound difference that is being made in the lives of the children and families we serve. This year’s theme was “Everyday miracles through everyday faith.” Through a commitment to serving our members in a spirit of Christian love, The Cabbage Patch provides programs in Recreation/Youth Development, Educational Opportunities, and Counseling & Family Services to 1,000-1,200 children, youth, and adults annually. Through faith, we see the potential each member has. It is through faith that “Everyday Miracles” come to fruition in the lives of our members. These “everyday miracles” have a larger impact: they help shape and reshape individuals and families. They give children new confidence and help families build a stronger foundation of support for one another. Ultimately, they give many of our members the encouragement they need to step out into the world and accomplish things much greater than they ever dreamed possible.

Before she became a Recreation/Youth Development Specialist at The Cabbage Patch, Frances Lewis was a Cabbage Patch member herself. Frances told guests about the important role the faith and the love she received at The Cabbage Patch played in encouraging her to attend college, gain a degree, and pursue her dreams.

Dr. Michael Jinkins, president of Louisville Theological Presbyterian Seminary, spoke to guests at the Annual Celebration Luncheon about being “credible witnesses” to the work of The Cabbage Patch. This included sharing our work with others and providing annual support.

For the 11 year old boy who was failing math, pulling his grade up, receiving a “C” in the class, and being told he can move on to the next grade – is an everyday miracle. For the 8 year old girl who has never met her father and is bullied at school, walking into an environment where she is told she is loved and valued – is an everyday miracle. For the 22 year old college student, walking across a stage and receiving a diploma – becoming the first person in her family to receive a college degree – is an everyday miracle. For the single mother of 3, receiving one-on-one guidance on how to develop a resume, seek employment, and find a job with a future that allows her to feed her family – is an everyday miracle.
