2012 ANNUAL REPORT

The Dreamer

By Hollie Huston, Cabbage Patch Alumnae

There are some dreams we dare to dream. To some those seem like silly things. But to the dreamer dreams are nice. And can’t be sold at any price. I am one who dares to dream Of many, many splendid things. But for some I sadly say, Those dreams, quite simply, fade away. Some poor souls have lost their dreams. Those very, very, splendid things. Will they dream another dream? Yes, they will without a doubt. But this time will it be carried out? Only those who lost a dream That very, very splendid thing, can say. But dreams will come, And dreams will go, Like the soft white winter snow. And to those who dream of splendid, splendid, splendid things. Keep them coming, make them stay, never let them fade away. “The Dreamer” was written by Cabbage Patcher Holly Huston when she was 13 years old. Hollie went on to volunteer in canoe and High Adventure Trips with The Cabbage Patch as an adult.

OUR “GARDEN OF DREAMS”

Dear Friend, For 103 years, this community has supported our mission to profoundly change the lives of at-risk children and families. Through the continued support of individuals, businesses, foundations, churches and service organizations, The Cabbage Patch has developed into a “Garden of Dreams” where seeds of hope and promise for the future are planted in the lives of those we serve and nourish every day. This “garden” is filled with stories of triumph over adversity. We rejoice with the mother of five who recently achieved her dream to be a homeowner. We celebrate when a Cabbage Patch youth learns she has been accepted into college. We cheer when a child succeeds at a project he never believed he could complete. But our garden is not immune to stories of hardships and struggles: of families who fight to put food on the table for their children; of children who have low-self esteem because of bullying at school; of young adults who have lost confidence in their ability to ever attain a college degree. It is for all these and many others that the doors of The Cabbage Patch are open: offering help, love and hope. Through your generosity and support, vital programs and services will grow—allowing The Cabbage Patch to remain a garden where hopes and dreams become a harvest of changed lives.

ALUMNI SHARON DAVIS PURSUES HER DREAMS to help s e i ivit h good e Patch provides g a t b b c a a C leaders and oug r h “The t “The Cabbage Patch defined the highlights of my youth. It was the best time, and I learned from all the leaders how to take responsibility and work with others well,” says Sharon Davis, a hard-working young lady who first came to The Cabbage Patch when she was five years old with her three sisters. In the years to come, her whole family stayed involved in The Patch, and Sharon participated in many camps and programs like Seed to Table and Homework Helper. “I loved all the camps and activities provided, and it was a wonderful opportunity,” she says. After graduation from the J. Graham Brown School, Sharon enrolled in Bellarmine University with support from The Patch as a College Scholar. Her involvement with Bellarmine’s EMS Team sparked her desire to pursue a medical degree. Today, she is enrolled in the pre-med program at Bellarmine and pursuing her dream of becoming an Emergency Room physician. A new position with a local hospital allows Sharon to work and still continue taking classes. “The Cabbage Patch helps me now by providing a supportive community that I can always look to if I need help. I love visiting and seeing how much The Cabbage Patch has grown.” Sharon wants others in the community to know about the opportunities available through The Cabbage Patch. “The Cabbage Patch is the most supportive and wonderful source for children to grow and learn about responsibility and life. It provides leaders and activities to help individuals through good and bad times.”

PROGRAMS: EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES

In 2012, The Cabbage Patch continued to engage new and existing families, children, and youth through fun and innovative programming. In Educational Opportunities, children and youth are reminded daily of the importance of an education at all levels, from grade school through college. Programs such as Homework Helper, the Summer Reading Challenge, and Friday Night Movie Nights are just a few of the ways The Cabbage Patch works diligently to create life-long learners.

Programs in Recreation/Youth Development remain focused on the importance of teamwork, developing fundamental skills, and teaching good sportsmanship while recognizing each participant for his and her unique talents. The new Volleyball program continued to grow and team members showed improvement in skills and understanding. Other programs in Art, Drama Club, and even Photography remained popular ways of involving children and youth in the Creative and Performing Arts.

PROGRAMS: COUSELING & FAMILY SERVICES Counseling & Family Services continues intensive work with families of the

children and youth who attend The Cabbage Patch, helping each family develop goals for their future and set about achieving them. “I moved in across the street from The Cabbage Patch almost 17 years ago,” says Tasha* a single mother of five. “The Cabbage Patch helped me raise my children by providing a safe environment and place for them to go. Because of The Patch my kids were able to go places I would not have been able to send them on my own as a single mother with limited funds.” One of Tasha’s goals was to become a homeowner. Through hard work and perseverance, as well as assistance from Habitat for Humanity and many volunteers and sponsors, her dream was realized in early 2013 when a groundbreaking was held for her new home. “The Cabbage Patch helped me so much and is a great place for the whole family,” she says. “It is a safe and Christian environment. I would encourage [others in the community] to sign their children up at The Patch, get involved, and become members.” *Names have been changed out of respect for the privacy of those we serve.

VOLUNTEER LESLIE ELLIS PLANTS SEEDS OF HOPE IN SEED TO TABLE rd seed . . .… a t s u m as a n “I tell you the truth; if you ha l l a ou.” othing w y ve faith as sm r ill be im fo possible Few places hold more wonder for a child than a garden, and few may understand this better than Leslie Ellis, a long-time Cabbage Patch volunteer. Since 1995, Leslie has diligently run The Patch’s Seed to Table program.

Warmer months find children and youth planting, tending, and harvesting their own crops—corn, green beans, peppers, jalapenos, cucumbers, baby watermelon, tomatoes, and herbs—from the garden. When cold weather sends the program indoors, lessons in cooking and preparing food take precedence. Leslie watches with pride as her Seed to Table participants take pride in their work. She enjoys watching their excitement and wonder at the process of how a small seed grows into a full-sized plant, and she is very aware of the parallels between the garden and the lives of the children she works with. “I often send the crops we grow home with the children,” Leslie says. “I wonder what happens to them after that. I sometimes feel the same way about the children. What are they learning? What are they gaining from this? Are they even listening to me? Then a child will tell me about a goal she has made for her life, and I am amazed.” Leslie observes The Cabbage Patch as a place that gives kids a safe place to be, where caring adults offer structure and work hard to help each child or youth become the best person they can be. But the individual stories of each child are why she returns. One year, The Cabbage Patch entered vegetables from Seed to Table in the State Fair and won many awards. “We were on our way home, and there was one little girl sitting so quietly at the back of the bus. I asked her why she was being so quiet and she said, ‘I’m thinking about all those ribbons.’ I told her how proud I was of her—of how hard she worked to earn those ribbons.” Leslie pauses and her eyes fill up with tears: “That little girl looked up at me and said, ‘It’s just that I’ve never won anything before.’ That is the kind of impact The Cabbage Patch can have on a child.”

A SNAPSHOT OF OUR GARDEN OF DREAMS The Cabbage Patch serves children, youth and adults through core programs in the areas of Recreation/Youth Development, Educational Opportunities, and Counseling & Family Services.

In our service area:

• 60% of the children live in poverty. • 30% of households are headed by single mothers. • 37% of those 25 years of age or older are not high school graduates. • 59% of the househouseholds make less than $25,000 a year.

“Working at The Patch, you encounter children from all different walks of life. There is one child who is more difficult to work with than others. But every day I make a point to give her a hug and tell her I love her. She pretends to fight me off, but I know she is smiling when I do this. This is a child who doesn’t hear ‘I love you’ very much—if at all. But she hears it here.” - Frances Lewis, Recreation/Youth Development Specialist

The Cabbage Patch Team

• 18 full-time staff • 10 part-time staff • 73% of current full-time program and senior management staff have advanced degrees. (excluding summer staff)

IN LOVING MEMORY: POLLY WILLIAMS The Cabbage Patch grieved as we said goodbye to a dear and long-time friend, Polly Williams in September 2012. Polly’s commitment to the children and families of The Cabbage Patch made a profound impact on countless lives. More than 200 memorial gifts were received as well as donations toward a special Commemorative in her memory. In January 2013, The Polly Williams Recreation/Youth Development Fund was established and later in 2013 the Polly Williams Art Center will be dedicated. It is our prayer that Polly’s spirit of love and creativity will continue for decades to come within this creative space where she taught art and gave unconditional love to many children.

The Cabbage Patch is a local charity meeting the needs of local at-risk children and families. Because The Cabbage Patch is not a Metro United Way agency and chooses not to participate in funding streams that can create dependency, such as government grants, we must rely on individual donors, like you, to finance our programs. Won’t you please help by giving generously?
