CHILDREN: AN EXCELLENT INVESTMENT OPPORTUNITY

A MESSAGE FROM TRACY

Over the past few years, many folks have nervously eyed the stock tickers, the Dow and other indexes. It goes without saying that it’s been a challenging economic time, for individuals, for companies, and for nonprofits organizations, The Cabbage Patch included. But our faithful supporters like you know, as the Irish proverb goes, “If God shuts one door, He opens another.” Every day is an opportunity to make a new happy ending. And that is what The Cabbage Patch does. We offer opportunities to at-risk children and families. Whether the returns on our financial assets are less than 1%, or in the double digits, I can think of no better “return on investment” than the profound changes that occur in the lives of children and youth served by The Cabbage Patch. You have the opportunity to change lives. An investment in a child’s life now will pay dividends for generations to come. --Tracy Holladay, Executive Director

“Life is a gift, and it offers us the privilege, opportunity, and responsibility to give something back by becoming more.”

- Anthony Robbins

ALUMNI SPOTLIGHT: LIFELONG DIVIDENDS

PHYLLIS SANTOS Director of Marketing & Development Cardinal Hill Rehabilitation Center/ Easter Seals of Louisville

WHEN DID YOU BEGIN ATTENDING THE PATCH AND HOW LONG DID YOU SPEND HERE? I attended in the 50’s for a couple years, then my family moved.

IN WHAT PROGRAMS DID YOU PARTICIPATE?

I participated in the sewing/art classes and took field trips

in the summer in the “Big Red Truck.” WHAT VALUES OR LIFE-LESSONS DO YOU THINK THE PATCH

FOSTERED IN YOU? I learned cooperation and how to have fun. My family’s church was next door to The Patch – Stuart Robinson Memorial Presbyterian Church. Between my church, my family and The Patch, I also learned the importance of giving back and getting involved. WHAT MAKES THE PATCH SO SPECIAL AND UNIQUE? My family was very poor and we could not afford to go on vacations so being able to take field trips to various places around Kentucky and swimming trips holds great memories for me. I especially remember singing and meeting new friends on these trips. I always felt safe and loved at The Patch. AT THE PATCH, WE TALK ABOUT WINNING FOR LIFE. WHAT DOES THAT MEAN TO YOU? Winning for Life to me means living a winning life of good values, work ethics and using my blessings and gifts to do what I can to make a difference in whatever direction I am led. This also means having a team spirit of inclusion and respect for all people.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT: LEVERAGING PARTNERSHIPS The Cabbage Patch is able to offer children and youth a diverse array of programs and experiences because of collaborations, partnerships, and generous investments of supplies, equipment, time, and funding from sponsors and donors. A few highlights from the past year:

Here's to the wind in your face! On many temperate weekends, you can find a dozen or more Patch members at a local park taking cues from Mr. Raz (aka William Rasinen, Recreation/Youth Development Programs Manager), learning proper signaling and other rules of the road, and practicing basic bicycle maintenance. THE SAFE URBAN BIKING program begun two years ago continues to grow in popularity and accommodate an increasing number of participants. Participation in and encouragement from the Louisville Metro Bike Louisville task force and local cycling enthusiasts helped Mr. Raz earn his League of American Cyclists certified instructor status. Volunteers have helped lead some bike camps and seminars. Monetary support from groups such as the Kentucky Colonels has allowed the purchase of a set of new (and uniform) bicycles, making maintenance much less costly and more streamlined.

PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT: LEVERAGING PARTNERSHIPS

Jasmine’s heart thumped as she prepared to go on the Brown Theatre stage and perform with fellow Patch members. The10-year-old had been practicing her harmony for weeks in The Cabbage Patch’s performing arts space, but she still felt nervous in front of the crowd of hundreds. At the end of the song, applause rang in her ears and she saw her parents beaming with pride. The visual and performing arts provide a positive emotional outlet for at-risk children and youth who face various financial and social hardships. Thanks to support from the Norton Foundation and The Cabbage Patch’s membership in the KENTUCKY CENTER’S ARTSREACH program, they have opportunities to visit with touring artists and perform in local showcases. And talented Patch staff and loving volunteers, such as a group of St. Francis in the Fields members who faithfully led weekly art classes and assisted with our visual arts gallery, encourage and nurture kids’ creative side.

Beyond the Piggy Bank The LEADERSHIP DEVELOPMENT program identifies Cabbage Patch youth who display a positive behavior and attendance record and who maintain a positive or improved academic record to participate in two 14-week programs emphasizing leadership techniques, work ethics, social skills, life skills, educational choices & value, time management and financial responsibility. Thanks to financial and educational support from partners such as PNC Bank, teens in the Leadership Development program receive formal training in budgeting and money management. Select participants receive cash incentive stipends, open savings accounts, and are encouraged to save half or more of their stipends. The Cabbage Patch will hire 5-10 of our teen leadership graduates, selected because of their demonstrated maturity and program skills, to help with Cabbage Patch summer camps. Parent Kathleen commented, “This was the first real job my children had. Combined with those bank runs for deposits, it really taught them a lot about money management, saving for the future, and the value of work.”

INVESTORS Because The Cabbage Patch is not a Metro United Way member agency and does not accept government grants, we must raise up to $1 million each year—which takes many, many donors as indicated by the over 1,285 names listed on the following pages. The Board and staff honor and thank these donors for their steadfast support and investment in profoundly changing the lives of at-risk children and their families. BUSINESSES

All gifts are deeply appreciated. If through an error any names were omitted, please accept our apology. Please contact The Cabbage Patch so that the appropriate corrections can be made.

The Cabbage Patch is a local charity meeting the needs of local at-risk children and families. Because The Cabbage Patch is not a Metro United Way agency and chooses not to participate in funding streams that can create dependency, such as government grants, we must rely on individual donors, like you, to finance our programs. Won’t you please help by giving generously? 1413 SOUTH SIXTH STREET LOUISVILLE, KENTUCKY 40208 CABBAGEPATCH.ORG 502.634.0811
