International Women’s Day

Laura Wales (JCR President)

To mark International Women’s Day on the 8th March, we ran our ‘Women of John Snow’ campaign. A Google Form was created and circulated via social media in the morning, encouraging students to nominate their friends and tell us why they are brilliant and deserved nominating. By the evening, we had received nearly 50 nominations of wonderful women, all of which were posted to our @johnsnowjcr Instagram page.

The reasons behind the nominations were incredibly heart-warming to read. Many had been nominated for their kindness, strength, dedication, resilience, being a good friend, or simply for being themselves. I was even more delighted to see that the nominations came in for an array of students spanning all years: from first years to postgraduates, featuring individuals who are very involved in the JCR, its sports and societies, as well as those who support from the side lines or aren’t as involved but still deserve to be shouted about.

To supplement the campaign, our FemSoc ran a Cake and Chat event in the Igloo to provide a safe space for conversation, encouraging the celebration of women along with discussions about intersectionality and the societal issues women still face.
